Appleton Wiske is one of the 41 ancient parishes of the Wapentake of Langbaurgh in the Cleveland division of the North Riding of Yorkshire. It was also a part of the sessional division of Yarm and is thought to date back to Saxon times, referred to in the Domesday Book as Apletona.

The path of a Roman road runs close to the village and Appleton marks an important crossing of the River Wiske, from which it takes its name.

There are plenty of walks nearby, including Wainwright's Coast to Coast, which runs close to the River Wiske.

Nearby Deighton is a pretty civil parish located close to the A167. The area has a village hall with badminton courts, seasonal events and a thriving history and archaeology group.
