WHAT IS AN ASBK-SPEC SUPERBIKE?

The Australian Superbike Championship Alpinestars Superbike class features bikes that are not only fast, spectacular and sound amazing but are also easily accessible to the general public as they are very similar to those available for purchase off the showroom floor.

Engine capacities and minimum weights for ASBK machines are capped at 1000cc and 168kg for four-cylinder machines, and 1300cc and 172kg for two- and three-cylinder configurations. That said, it’s worth noting that Matt Walters’ 1100cc Aprilia RSV4 has also been homologated for the Alpinestars Superbike class in 2023.

While engine modifications for race versions are limited, Yamaha Racing Team manager, John Redding, says the engine is not a primary focus for performance gains in the Superbike class.

“To get a performance improvement of 10 per cent over the standard output is about as much as you can expect,” Redding said. “You can increase the compression ratio, fine-tune the degrees on the valve seats and adjust the cam timing for different tracks, but that’s about it.

“One of the advantages of keeping the engines relatively standard is they are cheap to maintain and last a while between rebuilds.”

With the engine and gearbox both being close to standard, teams have turned to other aspects of Superbikes to improve their performance.

“Suspension has been a major area of development on the race-spec bikes,” Redding said. “The suspension on a street bike is compromised for ride comfort, but on a racetrack comfort isn’t a factor – it’s all about optimising the handling and the corner speeds that can be achieved.

“Compared to the street version of the bike, the race bike will have different shock absorbers and fork internals, providing a much more adjustable setup.”

In recent years, significant innovation has taken place in the electronic systems of race bikes. These systems have been adapted to provide

functions such as fuelling, traction control, engine braking and antiwheelie control.

There’s little doubt that the electronics sphere has provided both the biggest challenge – and opportunity – to teams and riders.

“Electronics are one of the most important areas of development and something that has become a critical factor in determining the speed that can be achieved by different bikes,” Redding said. “There are significant advantages to be gained in having the best electronic set-up.”

The brakes on racing bikes are also upgraded, with items such as the master cylinder, brake lines, pads and discs all being replaced with race-specific items.

“In a race situation, maximum stopping power is a priority, but brake wear is much less of a consideration than it would be on a road bike, because components can be changed after every session,” Redding said.

According to Redding, the bikes competing in the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, are more similar to road bikes than those in other Superbike championships globally.

“The permitted modifications are much more limited here in Australia, which has the advantage of containing costs,” Redding said.

At Phillip Island’s round one this year, the 2024 ASBK-spec bikes demonstrated their impressive speed when compared to the international classes. For instance, Harrison Voight’s new Phillip Island lap record is 1:30.790, which isn’t far behind the WorldSBK benchmark of 1:28.564.

Not bad for a lightly modified road bike!

SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK REVIEW/ QUEENSLAND RACEWAY PREVIEW

ALPINESTARS SUPERBIKE

The 2024 mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul (ASBK) reaches the halfway mark at Queensland Raceway from April 26-28.

Last year, it proved to be a turning point in the Alpinestars Superbike class. After five wins on the trot Josh Waters’ winning streak ended as Troy Herfoss took a clean sweep with pole and two race wins compared to Waters’ pair of fourth places. A 35-point lead shrunk by almost half to 18pts.

It’s a completely different story this year. Herfoss (DesmoSport

Ducati) is 62.5 points behind Wasters after a disastrous nonscoring second round at the Sydney Motorsport Park Night Race, while Waters (McMartin Racing Ducati) comes into the weekend with four wins from five and has a 25.5-point lead over Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team).

Halliday won another thoroughly exciting opening leg in Sydney after a monumental battle with Waters and young gun Harrison Voight (McMartin Racing Ducati), with the trio separated by just 0.797sec at the chequered flag – Voight unlucky not to break through for his first win in the premier ASBK category after messing up the last corner and unable to take advantage of the drag to the line.

Unfortunately, Voight won’t be here this weekend as he has returned overseas to compete in the European Moto2 Championship, where he finished 10th in round one at Misano on April 21.

Meanwhile, Herfoss was a non-starter in Sydney’s race one with an electrical issue that went undiscovered after a crash in qualifying. If that wasn’t bad enough, in the second leg he crashed out of the lead on the west track.

Herfoss has been back in MotoAmerica mode the last two weekends competing in the King of the Baggers class, which he now leads by 9pts after a slew of victories.

But it’s just not Waters, Herfoss and Halliday: the Superbike class has depth galore, and one rider who has won plenty of times at Queensland Raceway is Mike Jones (Yamaha Racing Team). It’s been quite some time since the three-time Superbike champion graced the top step of the podium, and there’s no place he’d rather do it than on one of his home tracks.

Broc Pearson claimed his first podium finish for DesmoSport Ducati in the last outing, and is fourth in the title chase. He’s another who will give it is best at his home track.

Only 27.5pts separates Pearson in fourth spot and Herfoss in 10th, with Jones, Cam Dunker (Penrite Racing Yamaha), Max Stauffer (Penrite Racing Yamaha), Anthony West (Addicted to Track Yamaha), and Bryan Staring (MotoGo Yamaha). Talk about a stack of talent stacked against each other!

Staring is the current lap record holder and, with the level of competition, expect another record to be set this weekend.

As for longevity don’t go past West! The mercurial Queenslander is getting faster with age. He went close to a podium at the opening round so there’s another one to keep an eye on.

Also demonstrating the longevity of our Aussie riders there are four in the field with three championships each: Waters,

20

Allerton, Jones and Herfoss. Will one of them manage to make history and bag a fourth this year?

Maybe, but there are two lads in the Penrite Racing Team eager to prevent that from happening.

Elder of the two, Stauffer, claimed his first podium of the year in Sydney and was the fastest at the recent test. Max has been suffering from a broken wrist, so hopefully he is near back to full fitness as well.

The current Australian Supersport champion, 16-year-old Dunker, in only his third ASBK meeting on the one-litre Superbike, and he’ll learn ever more – and undoubtedly be extremely fast in the process – at Queensland Raceway.

Glenn Allerton sits in 11th on the GT Racing BMW. Allerton has been competing under an injury cloud for the opening two rounds, but with a further month of recuperation and his hit rate in the past at Queensland Raceway, expect some fireworks.

Finally, there is the fastest starter in the west, east and all points between – Arthur Sissis. Arthur is now under the evergrowing quick shade of the Gold Cost-based Stop & Seal Racing, but still on a Yamaha. It will be interesting to see how he adapts from being a part of a family-managed team into such a high-profile team.

The depth of talent that could be fighting for a podium is extensive so there are plenty of subplots to keep everyone thoroughly entertained over the two races.

MICHELIN SUPERSPORT

Michelin Supersport has the largest depth of talent seen in some years, with the tempo ramping up at the last round in Sydney.

Multiple champion Tom Toparis (Stop & Seal Racing Yamaha) returned to the class and took pole position, two race wins in extremely dominant fashion and smashed the lap record which had stood for over 15 years.

Tom is back and means business. It all started at the Supersport World Championship round at Phillip Island where he was a wildcard and scored a 10th place finish. Now, his aim is to claim a third title in Michelin Supersport, but he will have to be on form at every round as there are a bevy of youngsters ready to claim the crown.

Leading the way is Jonathon “JJ” Nahlous (Yamaha) who completed a clean sweep of the Island with three wins a pole position as well as a new lap record.

In Sydney he claimed a brace of second positions, but the team found a problem with the bike that has since been rectified so there is no doubt.

Last year’s championship number two, Olly Simpson (Yamaha) hasn’t had the start to the year he had wished for. After finishing second overall in the opening round he hit a speed bump in Sydney, uncharacteristically crashing out of the first race before recovering to finish seventh in the second race to salvage some points. He’s in fourth place, 44pts adrift of series leader Nahlous.

Nahlous has a 29-point lead Jake Farnsworth (Wurth Developments Yamaha), who scored 4-3 results in Sydney to build a 9pt lead over third-placed Tom Bramich (Apex Yamaha).

While Yamaha dominates the grid, there are two Hondas in the mix with Marcus ‘The Hammer’ Hamod and Mark Chiodo (Honda Australia), who sit in fifth and sixth respectively. Chiodo should be back to near full fitness after he broke his wrist in an accident at Phillip Island.

There are also few Kawasakis in the mix with Brandon

LAST TIME OUTCONT.

Demmery and Jacob Hatch on the Race DNA machines as well as Hayden Nelson on the BC Performance entry.

Then there are Toparis’ teammates in the Stop & Seal squad with Jack Mahaffey in seventh spot, Archie McDonald in eighth, Corey Turner in ninth and Glenn Nelson in 14th. What a busy pit box that will be!

RACE AND ROAD SUPERSPORT 300

Internationals have stolen a fair chunk of the limelight in the opening two rounds. At Phillip Island, it was Czech rider Petr Svoboda who took two dominant wins before Harrison Watts won the finale ahead of Tara Morrison – all Kawasaki mounted.

Tara then missed the round in Sydney due to a broken collarbone, but will return this weekend.

Meanwhile, the surprise in Sydney was Kiwi Jesse Stroud (Kawasaki), the son of legend, Andrew. It was his first visit to the track and, on a borrowed a bike, won the first race.

Joshua Newman and Watts share the championship lead, with Valentino Knezovic 9pts adrift in third. Newman and Knezovic scored their maiden wins in Sydney – before Stroud and Newman had a coming together in race three. No doubt they will be wary of each other this weekend.

Ryan Larkin will also be in the mix, further emboldened after finishing equal second in round one of the 2024 Yamaha R3 Asia-Pacific Championship – which will be joining the ASBK Championship at The Bend (SA) from November 8-10.

BLU CRU OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP

There has only been one round of the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup in 2024, with a couple of Hunters leading the way after Sydney’s opener: Toowoomba’s Hunter Corney ahead of Hunter Charlett.

Like always, the safest ‘bet’ is that there will be any number of positional changes during each race and the winner will not be decided until the bunch of slipstreaming kids crosses the finish line.

Since its inception in 2019, the FIM Oceania and Dorna Sports-supported bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup (OJC) has provided a nurturing environment for young riders to experience road racing at a national level, learn, improve, and showcase their talents.

The OJC has become a firmly established stepping-stone to the international racing arena and is recognised as a Road to MotoGP category. The most outstanding OJC riders have a clear pathway to progress to other international categories such as the Asia Talent Cup and Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.

Even though it is only in its fifth season, OJC has already earned a formidable reputation as a breeding ground for future stars. And in 2024, history will be made when Jacob Roulstone, who was an OJC competitor in 2019, becomes a world championship grand prix rider in the Moto3 class. And in more exciting news, the OJC will be formally recognised in 2024 with Australian championship status, which is a nod to its powerful status as a major junior pathways program.

The 2023 OJC season has seen 11 riders debuting, joining the nine incumbents from 2022. Furthermore, OJC graduates and current riders have also competed internationally in 2023.

The OJC formula is simple but effective: competitors aged from 11 up to under 16 (as of January 1, 2023) compete against each other on identical Yamaha YZF-R15 raceprepped motorcycles, equipped with control Dunlop tyres, Öhlins suspension, Yamalube and DID chains.
