A NE W URBAN OASIS Vida Dubai Mall is a fresh new city escape in the heart of the UAE’s buzziest metropolis
There is a certain magic to the view from an airplane window at night. e hint of a colourful sunrise making its way past a blanket of velvety darkness, or the twinkling lights of a city below, beckoning with a call to adventure as the captain announces that you’re beginning your descent. You fold away your tray table, adjust your seat back to its upright position, and put away your things, before peering eagerly out the window to watch as the runway illuminates, as though your destination is saying: “Welcome.” ere is something about being under the cover of darkness that changes the way we think and feel. is isn’t just me trying to be poetic – studies have found that certain parts of the brain, particularly those a liated with creativity and introspection, can actually become more active in darkness. It may even a ect our neuroplasticity. e dark is said to a ect everything from our melatonin and serotonin production (increasing the former, and decreasing the latter) to inciting more activity in the amygdala – the part of the brain that processes emotions. Is it any wonder, then, that we tend to change a little a er dark? For some, it means becoming more pensive, leaning into our most authentic selves. For others, it could mean feeling more impulsive and uninhibited. Whatever the case, exploring a new destination by night – or even a familiar one, that you’ll see with di erent eyes – can be a pretty transformative experience. With astrotourism and escapist travel becoming huge trends in recent years, the number of people travelling for celestial phenomena has been growing at an insistent pace, and now, a new realm of noctourism is taking hold. From nature-led experiences like night safaris, aurora-chasing, and bodies of water lit by bioluminescence, to man-made wonders – like glowing pools where you can swim during a star-lit evening, buildings brightened by sparkling lights, or culture-rich entertainment in luminous settings – if you’ve not yet been seduced by the growing appeal of a er-dark tourism, it’s time to get on board (p.36).

One of the most iconic night-time experiences in the UAE – or the world, really – is the sight of the Burj Khalifa’s laser and light show, not just enjoyed every 31 December to ring in a new year, but throughout the year. It’s a view perfectly seen from the brand-new Vida Dubai Mall, Emaar Hospitality Group’s exceptionally-located new property right next to the world-within-a-world that is the city’s largest shopping mall. Here, you can hop over to Souk Al Bahar to see the world’s largest choreographed fountain system with its epic light show, and marvel at the skyline of this glittering metropolis. (p.14)
As spring blooms and a restorative post-Q1 break becomes more tempting, we highlight destinations where you can wind down and switch o (p.35, 40, 51, 54, and 64) before returning for a buzzy new season of getting down to business (p.44). Enjoy the issue!

Emirates to roll out ‘telemedicine stations’ to 300 aircraft
EMIRATES HAS LAUNCHED new ‘telemedicine stations’ which will enable crew to gather information and vital signs, which can then be transmitted to the carrier’s Ground Medical Support. The portable kits have been designed in partnership with Parsys Telemedicine, and will be rolled out to 300 aircraft over the next few years. They offer HD video conferencing, remote passenger assessment, secure data transmission and 12-Leads Telecardia ECG, as well as medical devices including a pulse oximeter, thermometer, blood pressure monitor and glucometer. Gathered information is transmitted to a Medcapture tablet via Bluetooth, eliminating the need for crew to relay information manually, and allowing them to have realtime communication with the Ground Medical Support team. New cabin crew undergo eight weeks of ab-initio training including the use of the new telemedicine stations.

For foodies, Vida Dubai Mall is a prime place for easy access to some of the best dining options in the city
Dubai Mall first opened back in November 2008, with around 1,000 retailers, it was instantly the talk of the town. The highly-anticipated complex was to be the largest shopping mall in Dubai, adjacent to the Burj Khalifa – a new symbol for the glittering desert metropolis. Within its first five days alone, the mall had sold 61,000 tickets for its Dubai Aquarium and Discovery Centre. By the end of 2009 – just over a year after its opening – it had welcomed more than 37 million visitors. Since then, it has earned the title of the world’s most-visited shopping and leisure destination, with
visitor numbers rising so high that by 2011, the mall had even attracted more people than New York City and Los Angeles. In June 2013, its developer, Emaar Properties, announced that it would be expanding the total retail floor area by 1 million square feet. And that still wasn’t all: by June 2024, Emaar announced an AED1.5 billion (US$408 million) expansion. As of today, the attraction has achieved an extraordinary number of world records and achivements, including the title of the largest mall in the world by total land area, containing the world’s largest acrylic panel (for its aquarium) as well as the world’s largest OLED screen. Last year, it broke yet another visitor record with 111 million people having walked through its doors. With Vida Dubai Mall offering prime access to this world-class attraction, and all that comes with it, its location can’t be beat. Whether you’re a resident or a tourist, or a first-timer or a longtime fan of the city, a visit to Vida Dubai Mall can be a gateway to a whole new world that can be found within the surrounding radius. With its strategic location, signature service, and array of world-class amenities, Vida Dubai Mall is more than just a place to stay – it’s a gateway to experiencing Dubai like never before.

Bali, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok have firmly established themselves as nomadic nerve centres – but where else should be added to the itinerant soul’s itinerary?
WORDS JOSEPH PHELAN
THE
REVOLUTION
The digital nomad lifestyle has reshaped how millions of intrepid individuals approach employment. This burgeoning contingent of roaming workers is defying the established, often resented model of commuting to an office, sitting at a desk, and then trudging home, only for the cycle to repeat the following day.
Conscious that their time is as limited as it is valuable – a mindset that was, in part, catalysed by the Covid-19 lockdowns – they are choosing to blend professional responsibilities with personal fulfilment. Individuals are leveraging the freedom offered by remote working to travel, explore diverse cultures, and craft a work-life balance that prioritises experiences over conference rooms, and adventure over a rushed lunchtime meal deal.
Armed with little more than a laptop and a stable internet connection, these roving breadwinners are building their careers without being stymied by geographical constraints. Nomad.com, a platform designed to help remote workers discover the best destinations for living, working and travelling, suggests as many as 80 million people consider themselves a digital nomad. Other sources suggest that, at the very least, around 40 million are currently taking advantage of the opportunity to mix travel with work.
The nomad population seems likely to soar over the coming decade. Indeed, a recent FlexJobs study found that half of employees would take a pay cut if it meant they could work remotely, while one in five would happily work more hours if they could do so in a location of their choosing. A growing number of countries are also determined to lure workers to their shores with digital nomad visas, which allow them to work legally without possessing a local employment contract. With locations ranging from Mauritius to Georgia, Panama to Cyprus, and Latvia to Costa Rica, it’s unsurprising that enterprising go-getters are being seduced by the promise of a peripatetic lifestyle.
According to Pieter Levels, the animated founder of Nomad.com, there could be as many as 1 billion digital nomads by 2035 – a boom driven by a cocktail of better internet connectivity, the increased normalisation of outsideof-office work, and people’s deep-rooted desire to explore.
The 1 billion figure might be a highly speculative punt – Levels himself has said it’s “impossible to predict the future, but fun to imagine” – but it goes some way to indicating that combining work with wanderlust is not only becoming more attractive, but more viable. Advances in video conferencing and cloud technologies, coupled with employers recognising remote work as a desirable perk, have enabled individuals to participate in a more captivating, contemporary vision of the 9 to 5.
BEYOND THE BUZZ
For digital nomads, factors like high-speed broadband, reasonable living costs, cashless payment systems, access to co-working spaces, and the inherent charm of the location itself, are all considerations when deciding where to (temporarily) settle. As these factors become more commonplace the world over, options for digital nomads are on the rise. Here are seven of the best digital nomad-friendly places that are slightly off the beaten path – for now, at least.

LAUNCHED IN OCTOBER 2020, the Bahamas BEATS visa lets digital nomads live and work in the Bahamas for up to a year, and Nassau is a fantastic destination for anyone seeking a blend of work and adventure. With easy access to countless pristine beaches, and about 300 sunny days a year, it’s ideal for ocean lovers.
The Bahamian capital has a growing co-working scene for remote workers looking for productive environments, but the city’s true appeal lies in its plethora of post-work opportunities. Once the laptop is closed, visitors are free to enjoy the island’s coastal beauty, whether snorkelling through coral reefs or catching the surf. The local food scene is diverse and delightful, offering everything from fresh seafood to Bahamian souse, a light dish of pickled meat in a clear broth. Rent is one of the higher expenses: a comfortable one-bedroom apartment costs around US$920 per month, but, for many, it’s a price worth paying.

BEYOND THE BUZZ
MALACCA, MALAYSIA
Average download speed: 252.04 Mb/s
Average upload speed: 41.96 Mb/s
MALACCA OFFERS an intriguing blend of rich history, cultural diversity and modern comforts, with charming, compact streets lined with Dutch, Portuguese, and British colonial architecture. Already a popular stop with backpackers, digital nomads are sure to fall in love with the city’s Jonker Street Night Market, where delicious street food and unique handicrafts are up for grabs.
Malaysia sometimes gets a bad rap for its internet quality, but from personal experience I can attest to Malacca having reliable, widely available wifi. I even had download speeds of more than 100 Mb/s from wifi on a bus – and that was while we were driving through a jungle.
Malacca is a cultural gem, and its low cost of living, authentic food scene and proximity to Kuala Lumpur make it perfect for digital nomads seeking something beyond the usual urban hustle and bustle.
The DE Rantau programme – colloquially known as the ‘nomad pass’ – allows remote workers to live and work in Malaysia for an initial period of 12 months. Then, if you fall in love with the place, there’s the option to renew for an additional 12 months.
ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT
Average download speed: 41.24 Mb/s
Average upload speed: 4.47 Mb/s
ALEXANDRIA OFFERS an unrivalled blend of history, culture and modernity. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, the city is a sanctuary for those who love to dive into ancient cultures. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a commemoration of the famed Library of Alexandria, stands as a symbol of learning, housing millions of books and cultural exhibitions, while the city’s vibrant markets, such as the Souk El Attarine, add an effervescent energy to its historical charm.
The city also unsurprisingly boasts an array of incredible museums, including the Alexandria National Museum and Montaza Palace, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in history, before heading off to one of the city’s many co-working spaces.
For nomads, Alexandria is both affordable and accessible, with a one-bedroom apartment near the city centre unlikely to cost much more than around EGP 30,000 (£466). With the Mediterranean Sea on the city’s doorstep, and warm sunshine for most of the year, it’s a dreamy destination all-year round.
While Egypt doesn’t (yet) have a dedicated digital nomad visa – though it appears likely one will be introduced soon – remote workers can explore several alternatives. A tourist visa is ideal for short-term stays (up to 30 days) with the possibility of extension, while a business visa is also available for budding entrepreneurs.
GQEBERHA, SOUTH AFRICA

GQEBERHA – also known as Port Elizabeth – is an underappreciated South African gem. Known for its friendly locals and laid-back coastal charm, it offers a perfect mix of natural beauty and modern convenience. Stunning beaches like Hobie and King’s Beach make it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, while nature lovers can explore nearby wildlife reserves such as Addo Elephant National Park, and Schotia Safaris Private Game Reserve.
But the city is blessed with more than safaris and sunshine. For digital nomads, Gqeberha provides an affordable lifestyle – a one-bedroom apartment costs around ZAR8,267 per month – and it has reliable, comfortable co-working spaces with fast internet. South Africa’s digital nomad visa enables people to live and work remotely in the country while being employed by a foreign company, or earning income abroad. To qualify, applicants must earn at least ZAR1 million (US$55,000) annually.

KNOWN FOR GIVING easy access to hundreds of stunning beaches along Brazil’s northeastern coast, Natal o ers a perfect blend of work and play. The city has a vibrant food scene, with numerous restaurants and stalls o ering a variation on the local speciality feijoada , a stew made with vegetables, meat, black beans and a host of flavours that vary by chef. First-time eaters be warned – this dish is traditionally served with a 40-degree caipirinha cocktail as an aperitif.
Natal’s reliable, modern infrastructure includes numerous co ee shops and co-working spaces that cater to remote workers, while its international airport provides convenient travel options with direct flights to Europe. Additionally, as with much of South America, the city is incredibly a ordable. Rent for a decent apartment will rarely cost more than around BRL2,249 per month.
LISBON, PORTUGAL
Average download speed: 114.33 Mb/s Average upload speed: 77.74 Mb/s
ALTHOUGH FAR from a hidden gem – an estimated 16,000 digital nomads currently reside in the city – Lisbon o ers everything a remote worker could ask for. It has fast internet, an array of modern co-working spaces, and an excellent quality of life, making it a top destination for both budding and experienced digital nomads.
The city is rich in history, from the cobbled streets of Alfama to the majestic Castelo de São Jorge, so there’s plenty to explore between Zoom meetings. The food scene is equally incredible, with local delights like pastéisdenata and fresh seafood available on almost every corner. Many alfacinhas – a term used to denote Lisbon natives – would also argue that its vibrant café culture is one of the best in the world.
Lisbon’s sunny climate, lovely coastline and revered beaches like Carcavelos make it a joy to visit. With living costs more a ordable than many other European capitals, you won’t need much more than €903 to secure a comfortable apartment. HANOI IS a vibrant, exciting city filled with charming, centuries-old temples, colonial architecture and eternally bustling streets. Hoàn Kiếm Lake is a picturesque focal point at the city’s centre, o ering a peaceful escape in the heart of the chaos, while the Old Quarter, a labyrinth of some 40 streets packed with eclectic shops, lively markets, cafés and street food stalls, provides the opposite.
For digital nomads, Hanoi o ers co-working spaces aplenty, strong, stable wifi connections and a ordable living options (you can get a decent onebedroom apartment for around £300 per month). What’s more, the food scene is, as one would expect in Vietnam, sumptuous. Visitors can enjoy endless bowls of pho, bánh mì and fresh spring rolls, while the city’s abundant co ee shops – traditional and Western – are nearly all suitable for working or relaxing.
Hanoi is also a fantastic base for further exploration, providing easy access to places like Halong Bay, Tam Coc and Sa Pa (though these destinations are not quite as suitable for those who need a dependable internet connection).
The most popular way for digital nomads to remain in Vietnam is via its three-month single-entry tourist visa. Alternatively a three-month multientry visa (US$50) allows foreign visitors to enter and exit Vietnam multiple times.

Unlocking new benefits through airline and hotel loyalty programmes
From access to lounges and priority lanes to upgrades on flights, the standard perks of being part of an airline loyalty programme have long been enough to keep travellers loyal. But as competition gets stiffer and the needs of the modern consumer continue to evolve, a growing number of carriers are embracing new ways to keep customers on-board – from incorporating new technology, or getting creative about how they reward their clientele, or even teaming up with related businesses, including other carriers and hotel programmes. Hospitality businesses are following suit, with inventive new ways to keep customers engaged. Here are some quick and worthy considerations...
Discover your fave hospitality brands, and join their club
IT MAY SEEM OBVIOUS, but if you're not already a member of your most-visited hotel brand's loyalty programme, what are you waiting for? It can be tempting to simply join the biggest names, but you'll probably get the most use out of the companies with brands you identify with most. Consider your past travels, then familiarise yourself with different hospitality companies. Which ones have the most brands you like the vibe of? Which ones have the most properties in the types of destinations you like to go to most? Which ones partner with other programmes that you'd make use of? UAE-founded Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts also has properties in Italy, London, the Maldives, and now Africa too – and for its fans, Jumeirah One is worth joining. Marriott Bonvoy is one of the largest hotel loyalty programmes in the world and has more than 30 hotel brands at 10,000 global destinations under its umbrella. IHG Hotels & Resorts is in more than 6,000 destinations across the world, and IHG One Rewards covers more than 19 brands, while Accor's ALL covers 5,300 properties in 110 countries. Radisson Rewards is another top pick, with 10 brands inclusive of more than 1,460 hotels in 100+ countries, while Hilton Honors comprises 8,400+ properties in 140 destinations. Meanwhile, Ennismore's paid travel and food membership, Dis-loyalty, is a unique take on loyalty rewards across its 10 hotel brands.
Accor
Long-Stay Loyalty Partnerbased perks
A host of new partnerships have been signed in the past year, making it easier for frequent flyers to capitalise on loyalty rewards. Among these are Marriott Bonvoy's co-branded credit cards with Emirates NBD and Mastercard in the UAE; Riyadh Air and Turkish Airlines' shared loyalty benefits upon the former's launch in 2025; Etihad Airways' new Abu Dhabi Pass in partnership with The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi; Marriott's recent deal with Qatar Airways enabling members to convert Avios points into Bonvoy points (at a 2:1 ratio); Etihad's joint loyalty partnership with JetBlue; and Oman Air's loyalty programme expansion with Qantas. Emirates Skywards members of certain tiers are also granted access to flydubai's recentlyopened Business Class Lounge at Dubai International's T2.
recently expanded its partnership with Emirates, implementing a two-way points conversion system between Accor’s ALL and Emirates’ Skywards
DO YOU TEND TO book long stays rather than short ones, or prefer a more home-like accommodation option (that still provides all of the service benefits of a luxury property) rather than a pure hotel vibe? The Ascott Limited's Discover ASR programme may be a wise pick for you. It's free to sign up for a membership, and being a member will get you a wide range of perks from early check-ins and late check-outs to birthday e-vouchers, bonus rewards on a range of air tickets, tours, and activities, early access to private sales, and depending on your tier, exclusive access to experiential global events as well as local experiences, complimentary breakfasts and airport transfers, airport lounge access privileges, and more. They have 350 participating properties across 14 brands in 30 countries – and counting.
Reevaluate Your Credit Card Benefits
AT THE END OF 2024 Citibank UAE announced that it would be discontinuing its Emirates Citi World cards in partnership with Skywards, with these cards no longer available from 1 March 2025. While the replacement Citi Premier card does offer users the chance to convert its ThankYou Points into Skywards Miles (or into points for 11 other partner airlines, including Etihad, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airways, and Turkish Airlines), users will unfortunately lose tier benefits. In the aftermath, HSBC has launched a new Emirates Skywards Signature card, wherein users can earn Skywards Miles on every purchase, redeemable on Emirates and flydubai flights and more. Emirates NBD also offers a Sykwards Infinite Credit Card, with a welcome offer of up to 40,000 bonus Skywards Miles. If your card scheme isn’t delivering value, don’t hesitate to shop around for a better fit. The freedom to explore other options could lead to unexpected benefits –and maybe a more enjoyable travel experience.
The Corinthia Way
INTERVIEW YI-HWA HANNA
Corinthia Hotels has announced plans for high-end hotel projects in Dubai, Saudi, and Doha. We spoke to CEO Simon Casson to learn more
Atwo-tower structure exceeding 500m in height, Corinthia Hotels’ upcoming hotel and serviced apartments on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road will be connected by a cantilevered sky lobby more than 200m from the ground. Located close to the city’s Museum of the Future, it will also feature the world’s highest outdoor sky pool.
Tell us more about the new Dubai hotel. Our expansion into Dubai marks an exciting new chapter. is city is synonymous with innovation and excellence, making it the perfect destination to bring our signature blend of inventive hospitality and contemporary luxury. Our upcoming Dubai property, developed in partnership with Dubai General Properties, will be a true architectural landmark. is development is more than just a hotel; it’s a statement of our vision for the future. As we expand into new markets, we remain committed to staying true to what makes Corinthia unique: our Mediterranean soul, our attention to detail, and our unwavering focus on people.
What makes Corinthia Hotels stand out?
Corinthia started as a small family-run restaurant, Villa Refalo, which later grew into the Corinthia Palace Hotel. For the Pisani family, it was never just about business, it was about passion, warmth, and a deep love for hospitality. at same spirit still runs through everything we do today, shaping the way we welcome guests and build meaningful partnerships. As we continue to grow, we stay true to our roots, making sure the personal touch, traditions, and sense of family that de ned us from the start remain at the heart of Corinthia. More than just hotels, we create spaces where people come together, share incredible meals, and make lasting memories. With exciting new collaborations – Carlo Cracco at Corinthia Rome, Francesco Mazzei at Corinthia Palace, and David Martin and Christophe Hardiquest
Any plans to expand across the wider region?
Our three con rmed deals in the region are, I hope, a signal of our belief and con dence in the robust nature of the hotel market in the Middle East... stay tuned for more to come!
Please tell us a bit about your growth strategy. We are in a transformative era for Corinthia as a brand, building on the legacy and pipeline in place from our founder; and this is the point from which we build. is will be largely as an operator versus as owner/developer in most
cases. We have a strategic development plan which outlines our priority markets and this is led by Guido Fredrich, our Chief Development O cer and his team. Recent openings, both as owner and operator, show our ability to execute and bring world class hotels to the market.
In your opinion, what is the key to success in this crowded and growing market?
As a challenger brand in the luxury space, we bring unique exibility to the deal table as well as the reality that we are not restricted in most markets in the way the other larger players are. Given our history, we [also] bring an owner mentality in the way we think and operate that is somewhat unique in operators. What ultimately separates good from great though is service, our people, and the Spirit of Corinthia.
What’s exciting about this region for you? It’s certainly personal for me, having spent the last two decades living in the Middle East. I like the people, the culture, the sense of aspirational endeavour that is always present. e region has really emerged as a leader in global hospitality over the past decade, and that excites me and drives us to be a growing part of the scene.
What have been some recent highlights?
Our recent openings in New York, Brussels, and Bucharest. ey have established us in the all-important North American market and at the same time, all three hotels are of an extraordinary quality level, and so this burnishes our credentials as a real luxury player.
What can guests expect at a Corinthia hotel?
We believe true luxury is not just about beautiful surroundings, it’s about how we make people feel. Guests can always expect a warm, personal welcome, a sense of belonging, and an experience cra ed with care. From the thoughtful service of our teams to the attention to detail in every space, we create environments that feel both re ned and deeply personal. Each Corinthia property re ects the spirit of its destination, blending elegance with a vibrant energy that brings people together. Whether it’s an unforgettable meal, a moment of relaxation in our wellness spaces, or the anticipation of discovering something new, every stay with us is designed to be memorable. Above all, it’s the people – our teams, our guests, and the connections we create – that make Corinthia truly stand out. Our promise is simple: exceptional hospitality, delivered with heart.
at Corinthia Brussels – we’re bringing even more energy and vibrancy to our brand, while keeping the authentic Corinthia spirit alive.
Championing change: Fostering a work culture that puts people first
From workplace culture to benefits packages, employee well-being can be a key way to boost success by improving productivity and recruiting top talent
The topic of employee welfare is a popular one in the corporate world these days, but I believe that the services and benefits provided for the well-being of employees is still not being prioritised as much as it could or should be.
For me, as a CEO, it is about demonstrating empathy and understanding – not just talking about it. In 2025, all managers and CEOs should be championing change and looking for ways to enhance their workplace’s culture. The businesses that make this a priority will be the ones who stand the test of time and most importantly, retain the right people.
Employee welfare is about empowering people to feel a sense of belonging in the workplace, and to know that they are looked after far beyond when their shift ends. When you speak to employees, you will often find that family values are incredibly important. I believe everyone should have the right to be connected to their family
unit, especially in the UAE where many workers are living away from home.
Rethinking employee welfare
A personal wake-up call sparked my own decision to rethink employee well-being in 2022. It was a simple yet profound moment when a member of our warehouse team handed out chocolates to celebrate the birth of his child. While unwrapping the treat, it struck me that the employee would not be able to meet his newborn baby for months due to the constraints of annual leave.
As a father and husband, it would be unthinkable to be away from my family for such long periods of time, especially during these milestone moments – so why should
anyone working for me have a different experience? I was able to bring this particular family to Dubai and, seeing the profound impact this had on the employee’s quality of life, a family reunification programme was formalised and extended to all warehouse staff.
The businesses that make this a priority will be the ones who retain the right people
Creating a culture of inclusion and well-being
With workplace well-being, the goal is to create an environment where every team member, regardless of their role, experiences the same family-oriented values. Simple initiatives can transform workplace culture, fostering a sense of loyalty and dedication among employees. Beyond policies, integration into company culture is key. Whether it’s warehouse staff being given the chance to attend sporting or entertainment events with their families, or company-wide gatherings where they can bring their loved ones along, it’s so important to create an environment that enhances an employee’s quality of life.
A model for the industry
There’s a common misconception that employee-first policies are just about benefits. They represent a shift in corporate responsibility, proving that businesses can and should prioritise the well-being of their people. By championing change, companies can set new standards that not only enhance productivity but also build a workplace where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.

The Business of Fandom
Comic Con has seen its audience grow by 24 per cent per year since 2022, becoming more diverse and more dedicated. We found out how, and why
The region’s ultimate, agship pop culture convention, the Middle East Film and Comic Con – popularly known as the MEFCC – typically draws in more than 35,000 visitors every single year. When it rst launched back in 2012, not many would have anticipated that this annual geek go-to would someday become one of the biggest, most exciting events on the calendar for a surprisingly diverse audience – but it has. Since then, it has not only attracted fans from across the UAE and the wider region, but also become known as one of the top events for meet-and-greets with celebrities, voice actors, comic creators, and other exciting personalities in the world of pop culture. As its show director, Loy Pinheiro, says, it’s because it o ers something for everyone – “from limited-edition action gures to exclusive celebrity and comic creator encounters, over one epic weekend.” He adds: “ e event was created to cater to a growing community of pop culture enthusiasts, because the region lacked a large-scale convention to engage with international celebrities, comic book
artists, collectors, and brands.” e show has certainly accomplished its mission: it’s gained signi cant traction since then, and during its 2024 edition, it broke records with almost 40,000 visitors attending the threeday festival held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).
When the show rst launched, it was held in Dubai, and moved to Abu Dhabi in 2022. What prompted this decision?
e decision to move MEFCC to Abu Dhabi in 2022 was driven by several strategic factors. Abu Dhabi’s vision as a global hub for cultural and entertainment events aligned perfectly with our own long-term objectives. We saw an opportunity to contribute to the economic and cultural diversi cation of Abu Dhabi, whilst raising the bar as the region’s largest pop culture festival. e move to the capital and our ongoing partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi has been highly successful, allowing us to enhance our fan experiences, introduce new attractions, diversify our celebrity lineup, unlock new audiences, and increase the overall impact of the event.
e MICE industry tends to be rst and foremost associated with business or trade events. In reality, what role do consumerfocused events such as this play within it? At its core, the MICE industry is all about networking – which is equally key for MEFCC. We are a platform for families and friends, exhibitors and artists, talent, and cosplayers alike to come together,
INTERVIEW YI-HWA HANNA
share ideas, and celebrate their passions. Consumer-focused events like MEFCC play a significant and often underappreciated role within the MICE industry. While business and trade events are essential to the economy, conventions such as MEFCC contribute substantially to tourism, brand engagement, and cultural exchange, which also drive economic growth. Events like ours give brands in the region a platform to engage directly with their customers. We do this by creating unique opportunities for brands to engage with their target audiences on a deeper, more emotional level. Through strategic branding and immersive experiences, we offer brands a chance to build lasting connections with their fans, far beyond traditional advertising.
Why are events like this such an important part of the tourism landscape in this region?
[Events like this]not only boost tourism by driving international and regional visitors, but also [play a crucial role in highlighting] the UAE as a hub for entertainment, creativity, and innovation. With Abu Dhabi’s strong support for cultural and entertainment initiatives, MEFCC enhances the city’s global appeal while providing fans with a world-class experience that celebrates pop culture in all its forms.
What are some of the greatest lessons you’ ve learnt from running this pioneering event? What sets MEFCC apart is its diversity – reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of the Middle East, whilst celebrating artistic output in all its forms. The greatest lesson I’ve learned throughout my tenure is that there is no monopoly on pop culture. In fact, we should all reject monoculture. It’s only by celebrating MEFCC’s multiplicity, evolving year-on-year and creating new experiences, that we keep fans coming back for more.
The show has become famous for attracting exciting global celebrity names. How important is it to bring in world-class talent?
Comic Con is all about the fans. Of course, celebrity panels and meet-and-greets are a huge draw – but their importance, for me at least, lies in creating opportunities for guests to meet their biggest heroes face-to-face
In recent years, we’ve had the privilege of hosting top names including Stan Lee, Matt Smith, Barry Keoghan, and Jason Momoa. In
2025, visitors can look forward to meeting Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ian McDiarmid, and more.
What are the unique challenges and rewards of drawing in top-tier talent like this?
With each edition, we always want to bring new talent and fresh ideas. Finding the perfect profiles that we know our community will love is one of my favourite parts of the job. This starts months before the festival, as we carefully plan the programme around different genres – from manga to Marvel, and A-List stars to renowned voice actors – and ensure a rich and diverse Hall of Fame.
You place a spotlight on some local talent at the event each year. Why is this important? Comic Con is well-known for its role in helping many indie talents find their big break, building an inclusive community for creativity. Whilst our convention represents a thriving global community, it’s incredibly important to discover and uplift local artists, craftsmen, cosplayers, voice actors, and comic creators – all of whom bring fresh perspectives and renewed energy. Our mandate to provide local talent with exposure and growth opportunities is reflected in our Artist Alley; the cornerstone of MEFCC, bringing together established and emerging creatives across every medium. This represents the perfect place for visitors
to explore original works, whilst creating a safe space for artists to showcase, sell and commission new pieces.
There is a cliché of “Comic Con” fans being a very particular type of guests. What advice would you give to those in the hospitality industry hoping to better capitalise on the influx of MEFCC fans for the event?
It’s safe to say that geek culture has the most devoted fans of all, consuming the most content and openly sharing their passions with the world. If you look at the popularity of video games, the growing appreciation of comics as a true form of literature, and the highest-grossing movies in recent years, you can see a real shift of geek culture into the mainstream. Hospitality providers would be remiss to ignore this growing, diverse demographic – all of whom are looking for one-of-a-kind experiences. My one piece of advice would be this: personalisation, personalisation, personalisation.
How do you hope to see MEFCC evolve in the next five to ten years?
By adapting to local contexts and embracing global influences, [we] can unite fans and bridge cultures. Our fans are fiercely loyal and would travel the multiverse to reach us, which I hope continues for many years to come.
Amina Ghali
Jewellery
INTERVIEW YI-HWA HANNA
What does a typical day look like for you? It always starts with morning meditation and a workout. Each week involves working on new projects and overseeing different aspects of the design process. I spend time at the workshop once or twice a week, reviewing amendments and ensuring our designs transition smoothly from sketch to prototype. I wear different hats throughout the week, working with the marketing team on future campaigns, coordinating with PR on strategic placements, and overlooking various aspects of the business.
What made you want to become a jewellery designer? Growing up with a single mother, Fatma and I were like her little assistants, accompanying her everywhere. Summers spent working at the workshop gave me firsthand experience in the craft. Coming from an artistic family – my father an architect and my aunt a lighting designer –creativity was always around me. But my love for jewellery truly grew the closer I was to my mother as a child, watching her passion and dedication firsthand.
What recent trends are you noticiing in the luxury jewellery industry? There’s a growing appreciation for craftsmanship and storytelling. Clients are moving away from mass-produced pieces, seeking jewellery with meaning, cultural significance, and artistry. They want pieces that tell a story and resonate on a deeper level.
Where do you find inspiration for your designs? My inspiration comes from everywhere – history, poetry, architecture, and personal experiences. World culture is a constant influence, from Pharaonic symbolism to African body art. Music, literature, and traditional sayings also play a big role in shaping our collections, allowing each piece to carry a unique narrative beyond just aesthetics.
Your work is renowned for transforming the global reputation of Egyptian luxury jewellery. What do you wish everyone would know about jewellery from the Middle East in particular? I view jewellery as more than just adornment – it’s woven into heritage, storytelling, and identity. The craftsmanship in the region is extraordinary, rooted in centuries-old techniques that are still practiced today. Many people buy jewellery with a deep connection to family traditions, milestones, and celebrations. It’s a unique dialogue between history and modernity, where every piece holds emotional significance.
What do you think is the secret to standing out in a crowded market? It honestly comes down to having a distinct identity. At Azza Fahmy, our identity is deeply rooted in storytelling – every jewellery piece we create
is more than just an accessory; it carries a narrative linked to world culture, heritage, and craftsmanship. Take our Gibran Khalil Gibran-inspired love bands, for example, engraved with his poetic words: “Love has brought us together, who could part us?” in Arabic. These pieces transform profound literary heritage into wearable art, allowing sentiment and history to intertwine. By weaving meaning into every creation, we ensure that our jewellery isn’t just recognised for its aesthetic but for the rich stories it tells, making it timeless and deeply personal.
What does true luxury mean to you? For me, true luxury is the perfect balance of comfort, style, uniqueness, and impeccable attention to detail.
How do you like to spend your vacation time? I love going to mostly beach destinations. I try to prioritise a place where I can connect with myself and quiet my mind.
What are three things that you always pack in your suitcase? Only three?! I’m such an over-packer! But if I had to choose, I’d say my toiletry bag, a book, and my makeup bag, even though I hardly ever wear makeup.
What is your earliest memory of a holiday as a child? Two places immediately come to mind: Dahab in Sinai and London.
What is your go-to choice of in-flight entertainment? That’s a tough one, it really just depends on my mood. Sometimes a good book, other times a movie or just music.
How do you spend your air miles? Weirdly enough, I don’t!
What’s your ultimate bucket list destination and why? Japan! I find the culture absolutely fascinating and would love to immerse myself in it.

Known as a platform that revolutionises business travel – and the expenses that come with it – WegoPro is a business travel and expense management platform that, as its CEO and CoFounder Prashant Kirtane puts it, is “built for today’s dynamic workforce.”

Night Moves
WORDS YI-HWA HANNA
Nighttime experiences – also known as “noctourism” – are becoming an increasingly valuable part of the global travel industry. From full-moon festivals and stargazing to evenings filled with culture and tours past sundown, a new world of after-dark activities is opening up
In the 2011 film Midnight In Paris, a writer named Gil visits Paris with his fiancée. Moved by the atmosphere of the city, one night while walking in Montmartre, he hears a clock strike midnight, then finds himself magically transported back in time to the 1920s. While the film is a rom-com, the true love story here is the way Gil falls for the city after dark. He spends the rest of his trip in the 2010s by day and mysteriously travelling back to the Paris of his favourite era by night – mingling with Scott Fitzgerald, Salvador Dalí, Ernest Hemingway, Paul Gaugin, Luis Buñuel, Edgar Degas, and Pablo Picasso along the way. While a large part of the film’s message is how human it is to romanticise the past – and how we often use it to escape issues of the present – it is also a story about the magic of night-time. Across cultures, for centuries, the night has been known as the time we dream; the witching hour, so to speak. As darkness falls over a city or landscape, it tends to take on a uniquely enchanted quality that can inspire feelings of timelessness, freedom, existential depth, and an intimacy that we tend not to feel by day. And in 2025, for travellers across the world, after-dark experiences are having a moment.
Over the past couple of years, astrotourism has become one of the most exciting new ways to explore the world. As millions of people across the globe began travelling to visit observatories and see celestial phenomena such as full moons and solar eclipses, Dark Sky Tourism truly began to take off. A growing number of locations – from New Zealand to Guatemala, Denmark, Namibia, and Myanmar – have snagged official certification as Dark Sky Places, with the list of these conserved areas (protected from the spread of urban light pollution) now reaching at least 200, in 22 countries across six continents. In Saudi Arabia’s AlUla – named the GCC’s first-ever International Dark Sky Park in 2024 – there’s now even a LaserSETI station at AlUla Manara Observatory. While the average tourist might not be there to look for E.T., they can certainly visit to explore its state-of-the-art telescope, before taking advantage of the stargazing opportunities nearby.
Natural Attractions
Another thrilling nature-led night-time experience that’s gaining traction is the night safari. Singapore’s Mandai Wildlife Reserve – run by the Mandai Wildlife Group, which also manages the Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Wonders, Bird Paradise, and Rainforest Wild – is the world’s first nocturnal wildlife park. In April 2025, the Reserve will be welcoming an eco-friendly hotel: the Mandai Rainforest Resort. Spanning across 4.6 hectares, with direct access to the parks, it will be a Banyan Tree property, offering guests the chance to experience a stay in a jungle dwelling where wildlife roams by day and by night. If an African wildlife experience is more of your dream, a growing number of destinations across the continent are offering the chance to experience a night-time game drive, often in the middle of a protected, wildlife-rich
THE NIGHT SAFARI
During the winter 2024-2025 season, Dubai Safari Park gave guests the chance to get a close-up view of more than 90 species' night-time routines, alongside presentations by its resident zoologists. To prioritise animal welfare, the limitedtime offering only focused on species that are naturally active at night.
area. While night safaris are only permitted in certain approved locales with specific operators, they can be found in a growing number of places from South Africa and Kenya to Botswana. The Fairmont Mara Safari Club offers night game drives through the Maasai Mara after dark, with a guide and spotter. Siyabona Africa offers them too; in the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve in Mpumalanga Provice, near South Africa’s Kruger National Park, as well as in Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls. In Tanzania and Uganda, Asilia’s luxury camps and lodges are a great place to rest your head and experience nocturnal safari magic, while in the Republic of Congo, guests of Kamba African Rainforest Experiences can explore the UNESCO-listed Odzala-Kokoua National Park – one of Africa’s most untouched rainforest environments – after dark . In 2023, Marriott International opened the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge, which will soon be followed by The RitzCarlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp in August 2025, and the JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp in early 2026. In Zambia, the Lolebezi luxury safari lodge is a great access point (complete with private plunge pools) for night drives through the Lower Zambezi National Park, while not too far away, the ultra-luxury Chichele Presidential lodge is set to open this spring in South Luangwa National Park. During their night drives, filtered red spotlights are used to help guests spot the unique crepuscular and nocturnal creatures found there.

If you’re more keen on glamping than seeing wildlife, one option going strong is the UAE’s Sedr Trailers Resort in Hatta. Here, guests can enjoy a fire pit against the backdrop of the Hajar Mountains. In nearby Ras Al Khaimah, Longbeach Campground boasts plenty of ways to keep busy at night, with live BBQ stations and an open-air cinema, and an array of camping-inspired activities. Terra Solis is another unique destination, in the desert: by day, its outdoor pool is a fashionable way to soak in the sun, while at night, it transforms into a jaw-dropping events space, hosting music festivals with stunning luxury tents and lodges to rest in.
For those dreaming of seeing the Northern Lights in person, picking the right hotel to stay in can make or break your trip, since the right viewing conditions for the aurora borealis can be unpredictable, and it’s wise to ensure you can pop out to witness them at short notice if need be. In Alaska, The Lakefront Anchorage – part of Millennium Hotels & Resorts – offers a spectacular vantage point, while in Iceland, the Northern Light Inn reportedly offers an aurora wake-up service. In Finland, the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel gives you the chance to see it all from the windows of a high-end glasshouse cabin with its own private sauna.
Crepuscular Culture
For many young travellers – particularly those on a gap year, or in their post-university backpacking era – the full moon parties held on the beaches of Koh Phangan, Thailand, are a core memory. Globally-renowned festivals such as Burning Man, AfrikaBurn, Coachella, Nowhere, and Electric Forest hold appeal for fans of electronic music and other art-driven ways to let loose. However, if you’re looking for something a little more sophisticated, there are few better ways to enjoy evening entertainment than the opera. Unlike the eclectic gear of the aforementioned festivals, going to the opera is a perfect excuse to get your glad rags on, and take part in one of the most historicallyrecognised and emotional art forms to exist.
If you’d like to pair a visit to the legendary Vienna State Opera with an unforgettable experience at the Opera Ball, ensure your visit is complemented by an equally luxurious hotel. Each year, on the evening of the ball, the Hotel Sacher Vienna hosts an Opera Ball Gala Dîner. In past years, Marriott has offered an Opernball Package at the Hotel Imperial, a Luxury Collection Hotel. Over in Hungary, where Budapest’s musical heritage can be celebrated at the recently reopened and refreshed Hungarian State Opera, the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest offers guests a stay with a private tour of the theatre, and seats in a private box. Visitors to the Sydney Opera House will find historical charm at the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel Sydney just a five-minute drive
For gourmands, visiting a night market is a must-try travel experience
away. In Oman, the Mandarin Oriental Muscat has partnered with The Royal Opera House Muscat to offer guests "A Night At The Opera" (complete with a special meal, private box seats, guided tour, and meet-and-greet opportunities with the stars of the shows). In the UAE, the Armani Hotel Dubai describes itself as the perfect encore after taking in a show at the Dubai Opera just next door.
For gourmands that consider the sizzle, crackle, and pop of street food to be their favourite type of music, visiting a night market is a must-try travel experience. The Temple Street Night Market in Hong Kong, the Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok, and the Marrakech Night Market in Morocco are among the most beloved in the world – and no city worldwide is more famous for its abundance of night markets than Taipei, Taiwan. From the Shilin and Raohe Night Markets to the ones in Ningxia, Huaxi, and Wuzhou, there’s no shortage of "xiaochi" (small eats) to enjoy at these iconic evening haunts.
In the Middle East, the desert safari is just as ubiquitous, and the UAE’s night-time desert camps – usually enjoyed after a dune buggy experience and sunset camel ride –can be booked through tour companies such as Arabian Adventures. Another popular evening experience in Dubai is the boat excursion – setting off three or four hours at a time in Dubai Marina or Dubai Harbour, you can choose an experience on a sleek luxury yacht, or upon a traditional dhow. From visiting souks to art galleries, the UAE has no shortage of after-dark activities to enjoy that don’t have to
involve going to a bar or club: head to The Dubai Mall to watch the Dubai Fountain, explore Dubai Garden Glow, or discover a virtual reality escape at House of Hype. In Abu Dhabi, grab some friends to play the arcade games at Central Yas Bay, take a night dive into a dark marine wonderland with Al Mahara Diving Centre, or stay above water with a night-time kayak through Jubail Mangrove Park, in a vessel with special underwater LED lights.
If you’ve ever fancied a Night At The Museum, you can sleep in one at the part-museum part-hotel Benesse Art Site Naoshima in Japan, or Mexico’s Solaz – a Luxury Collection Resort in Los Cabos that’s connected to the El Gabinete Del Barco indigenous gallery and museum. For book-lovers, Tokyo has a number of book- and librarythemed hotels and hostels – from Book and Bed Tokyo and Book Tea Bed, Ginza to Tsutaya Book Apartment and the Manga Art Hotel – where you can kip in between the shelves, or stay up all night turning the pages. From comedy bars to jazz clubs, 24-hour ramen bars or karaoke, and night-time tea ceremonies at a traditional tea house, to a visit up the Skytree, Tokyo is a dream for night owls.
In another city that famously doesn’t sleep, New York City’s Broadway shows continue to hold major appeal. Both this famous US theatrical scene as well as London’s
West End have enjoyed an influx of new fans due to the immense popularity of the recent hit movie Wicked, with countless tourists choosing to make a night of it rather than simply catch a matinee showing. Among visitors to the Big Apple between 2023-2024, 83 per cent said they had attended a Broadway show while they were in town.
Checking In, and Staying In
Perhaps it’s due to the rise of technology that enables more people to explore further, and at later hours than ever before. Maybe it’s inspired by the increasing desire for adventure-fuelled, unique travel experiences. It could be influenced by the decline in the number of tourists that centre their night-time activities around drinking (aligned with studies that showcase Gen Z is drinking less alcohol, and encouraging 'sober curiosity' among other generations) – and, as such, are seeking more experiential ways to spend their leisure time, particularly at night. Whatever the cause, more people than ever are discovering new ways to explore how fun a destination can be after nightfall.
Plenty of hotels around the world have picked up on this trend, offering their guests interesting things to do during their evenings without ever having to leave the property. Dubai’s Paramount Hotel and Jumeirah Zabeel Saray both have a private theatre room, while Mama Shelter Dubai, 24hours Hotel One Central, and Rove Downtown all have an in-house cinema. Fairmont Dubai’s The Theater and the InterContinental Dubai Marina’s The Showhouse both promise guests dinner and a show right on their doorstep.

In the case of Dubai’s Bab Al Shams Resort, the hotel's exceptional location and nature’s eventide have become the ultimate backdrop at Al Hadheerah. At this open-air desert restaurant, guests can tuck into dinner while being entertained by tanoura folk dancers, horseback and camel riders, and more every evening (and only by night). In the Maldives, an ever-growing list of fine resorts – including those from the Four Seasons, Jumeirah, and Marriott to COMO, Soneva, Sun Siyam, Dusit, One&Only, and Nautilus, to name some – host outdoor cinema experiences under the stars, while many also offer tranquil twilight spa treatments for a spot of late-night pampering. Across the map, New York’s Inns of Aurora Resort & Spa offers a lantern-lit sunset hike, and North Carolina’s The Foundry Hotel can take you for a spot of firefly forest bathing.
In California, the Lakehouse Resort in San Marcos can arrange a fireside evening complete with free-to-use guitars brought to the fire pit for a sing-along, while the Alila Ventanana Big Sur hosts yoga sessions under the stars. In Sri Lanka, Cinnamon Tours can arrange a lunar ritual with a cacao ceremony along with an overnight stay at a nearby hotel, while in Greece, the Nobu Hotel offers a holistic Astrology Package complete with Astro Sundowners and personalised in-room massages tailored to your zodiac sign.
In 2025, there are a growing number of ways to enjoy the multisensory enchantment of the night – so on your next trip, why not spend your evening a little differently?

There are five meeting rooms and 764 sqm of event space, and the wide range of accommodation options –everything from one-bedroom suites to four-bedroom villas – caters to every type of traveller. For longer stays, we recommend one of the Gardenia Villas, which have private pools and kitchenettes. marriott.com
Best for luxury: Bulgari Resort Bali
This hotel is perched on a secluded plateau near Uluwatu (its position means guests can enjoy both sunrise and sunset views). It’s one of Bali’s most beautiful resorts and was designed by Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel of ACPV Architects, who took a local approach – materials such as bangkirai hardwood and handcut volcanic stone were used for the resort’s villas and mansions (and
yes, the latter really is one of the resort’s official room categories). Everything is a cut above here, whether it’s the décor (many of the villas have dozens of priceless Balinese antiques), the activities on offer (helicopter ride over Uluwatu, anyone?), or the restaurants, which include Il Ristorante – Luca Fantin with its 300-bottle wine list and huge range of Champagnes. bulgarihotels.com

For many guests, Revivo Wellness Nusa Dua’s highlight is the hi-tech spa, where treatments on offer range from hydro and chromo-based treatments to ultra-traditional Balinese therapies. There’s also a huge focus on healthy cuisine here – if you love anything cold-pressed, fermented, or sprouting, this is the place for you; restaurant menus are filled with dishes designed to nourish and heal the gut while also catering to keto, vegan, gluten, and dairy-free diets. The most popular activities include sound healing, water meditation, and vinyasa yoga,

Best for sustainability: Desa Potato Head
All too often, sustainability is seen as a mere box to tick – but at Potato Head it’s thankfully taken incredibly seriously, whether it’s the passion for turning trash into treasure at its hi-tech recycling centre, the strict bans on single-use plastic (food is delivered to the kitchens wrapped in banana leaves), or the way organic waste is used to power a local school bus. Don’t assume this means dialling down the luxury, though – there’s
its breathtakingly beautiful sunrises. The enormous spa is another reason why this beachfront resort is a hit with couples – numerous treatments have been created especially for partners, and its 28 villas are designed with privacy in mind. It’s a popular spot for weddings (ceremonies take place in the lush gardens) and the entire property feels wonderfully romantic – the most sought-after dining spots include Jahe restaurant, where lanterns dangle from the trees. For the ultimate romantic escape, book the Honeymoon Pool Villa, which has a two-person soaking tub. pavilionshotels.com

Lunch
For a business breakfast in London, The Wolseley is a classic choice for a reason. A cross between a Parisian brasserie and a grand-but-cosy Viennese cafe, breakfast here is an institution. (So much so, famed restaurant critic A.A. Gill dedicated a whole book to it.) The large dining room in the heart of Piccadilly is buzzing with early business groups from 7am-11.30am each weekday, with professional, discreet service that won’t interrupt the flow of conversation. Fuel discussions with the extensive breakfast menu: you’ll find everything from Viennoiserie (Viennese-style pastries) to kedgeree and haggis. Treat yourself to pancakes, have eggs any way you can imagine, or fresh fruits, muesli and yoghurts for a healthy boost. Coldpressed juices, teas and infusions, and a barista menu will quench all thirsts. Got a sensitive proposal to discuss?
Private dining rooms are available for groups up to 15.

Do Not Disturb
The new Talise Spa Madinat Jumeirah Sleep Programme is a luxurious and thoughtful new take on sleep tourism
Sleep tourism is on the rise. Last July, Business Traveller Middle East reported that in 2023, the global market for this niche was projected to grow by 8 per cent within the following four years.
Since then, it’s shown no signs of slowing down, and in 2025, it has become one of the biggest travel trends across the world. As more and more high-performance individuals struggle with poor sleep quality due to the ever-accelerating pace of modern life, an increasing number of hospitality brands across the world are embracing the potential of sleep tourism offerings, combinings traditional, time-tested methods with cutting-edge science and technology for a holistic approach.
One such brand is Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts. The UAE-founded luxury hotel chain was first established in 1997 with the launch of its iconic Jumeirah Beach Hotel, and within just under three decades, it has become a leading name across the world with 26 properties across the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. The brand isn’t just known for its worldclass amenities – it’s also well-reputed for its educated, considered approach: if Jumeirah Group is offering its guests something new, you can safely assume that it has been thoroughly researched, and implemented with care for the entire customer journey. So when Madinat Jumeirah launched a new sleep programme at its Talise Spa this year, I was intrigued.
ABOVE: The Talise Spa Madinat Jumeirah Sleep Programme can come with the use of a Hapbee Smart Sleep Pad device
The Talise Spa Madinat Jumeirah Sleep Programme is available to guests staying at one of four Jumeirah properties: Jumeirah Al Naseem, Jumeirah Mina Al Salam, Jumeirah Al Qasr, or Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf. It can be booked for one, three, five, or seven nights at a time. Guests are consulted upon what will serve their individual needs best, to curate a custom programme utilising a range of treatments that can calm the nervous system, reduce stress and anxiety, ease physical and mental tension, slow down brainwave activity, clear emotional blockages, restore inner harmony, and help build a healthier nighttime routine. Among the options are sleep and diet coaching, hypnotherapy, meditation, yoga, qi gong, breathwork,
reiki, massages, and more. A range of hand-picked supporting technology and lifestyle products are also available, to be used while there, then taken home.
As a high-achiever who has suffered from the side effects of modern-day “hustle culture” – who also values her health, and advocates for the power of meditation and mindfulness-based activities – I had been struggling from a period of prolonged burnout. With my body constantly tired, but my mind often racing too much to let me sleep, I booked into a room in one of Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf’s Arabian Houses villas for the sleep programme. Surrounded by greenery in a more secluded part of the complex, a dose of nature could already help calm my overstimulated brain and nervous system. The serene atmosphere there – with only a handful of rooms in each villa, all encircling a gorgeous courtyard with a water feature – encourages a slower pace of life.
First grabbing a bite at Jumeirah Al Qasr’s Al Fayrooz Lounge – popular for its afternoon tea – upon checking in, I was delighted to find that the menu had a wellness section, with a range of wholesome, detox-friendly, and nutrition-packed items for the healthconscious. Once I made my way to the spa, I was warmly welcomed with an adaptogenic tea, made in-house. Crafted with butterfly pea flower tea, hibiscus, mandarin, and lemongrass with a touch of mint, the deep blue, caffeine-free tisane is designed to help reduce anxiety and stress.
My programme began with a hypnotherapy session. An alternative therapy technique that induces deep relaxation and focused concentration,
I lost all sense of time and space as my mind drifted into a state of deep meditation
hypnotherapy is not hypnosis – it’s more of a state of modified, trance-like awareness, where you’re still in control and able to stop at any time. While it is said that a person cannot actually be hypnotised against their will, pure hypnosis is described as more suggestive and harder to “resist”, with less self-control. Hypnotherapy, however, is more about guiding you into a heightened state of consciousness that allows you to access more of your subconscious mind. My session began with a private discussion with my hypnotherapist, sharing a series of issues I suspected had been disrupting my ability to sleep well. Once I was comfortable, the hypnotherapy itself allowed me to explore these issues more deeply, while illuminating other factors I may not have previously considered.
If I could picture my mind as an office, and my thoughts as a cluttered stack of folders, it felt as though someone had gently reached out for the dusty, forgotten files in the back corners and shaken them loose. In doing so, I was able to better understand what might be affecting my ability to rest – so I could then do something about it in my waking life.
Next was a Mindful Dream Massage: a blissful 75-minute treatment with soothing oils that promote relaxation, applied with long and sweeping strokes that calmed my nervous system while removing the stress knots everywhere from my neck to my feet. My day ended with a Satori Wellness Lounger Experience. Available exclusively at Talise Spa, Jumeirah Al Qasr, this pioneering, innovative treatment combines natural vibrations and sound therapies to harmonise both body and mind – clinically found to help with sleeping disorders, symptoms

of stress, anxiety, and even addiction. The loungers can be accessed outside of the sleep programme too, available daily from 10am to 9pm. You can select one of four Vibrational Wellness programmes curated by Sonas, including Emotional Healing, Mind Body Detox, Mindful Relaxation, and Cellular Massage. Mine involved a guided meditation, which I enjoyed in a plush bathrobe with an eye mask on, the soothing voice and vibrational sound delivered through headphones. While it was only 20 minutes, I lost all sense of time and space as my mind drifted into a state of deep meditation. Upon returning to my room, I found a box of supporting products waiting for me. Inside it was a special tea blend for unwinding, a calming pillow mist, and a Sleep Ritual Box, custom-made by Talise Spa and awardwinning Irish holistic wellness brand GROUND Wellbeing. Inside that was a bottle of bath salts and night body balm, with magnesium and essential oils to soothe the body and mind. Last but certainly not least was a Smart Sleep Pad and Active Neckband by Hapbee – a cutting-edge wellness brand that proclaims technology developed by neuroscientists. The former is described as the world’s first digital smart pillow, to be placed under your regular pillow during sleep, and the latter is a device to be worn
like a necklace. Both utilise patented bio-streaming technology to deliver gentle magnetic waves – akin to those typically derived from natural elements like melatonin, CBD, and caffeine – to activate the body’s neuroreceptors in ways that promote sleepiness, calmness, focus, a more positive mood, or an energetic, creative, or productivity-related boost.
At night, I was tempted to just order room service, but instead, I ventured out to dine at one of the many restaurants in the interconnected resorts. I headed to Mina Al Salam (accessible by land on a buggy, or by waterway on a boat), and enjoyed an authentic Italian dinner at Cala Vista. There, the soothing ocean breeze and stellar view of the Burj Al Arab took me far away from the troubles of my daily life. Afterwards, I slid into the comfortable bed with a book in hand, noticing that my incredibly thoughtful butler had left a bookmark on the bedside table for me. With the Hapbee smart
sleep pad under my pillow and my body thoroughly tempered from the flurrying agitation of my day-to-day, I slept with such intensity it was as though a pair of invisible hands were pulling me into a somniatory parallel world.

Each day of the sleep programme begins with a Morning Detox Wellbeing Drink to help stimulate the mind and cleanse the body. I woke drowsy, not yet ready to return to the land of the wakeful – but I slipped on my Hapbee neck band, setting it to a “Morning Coffee – Alert” vibration to “sharpen [my] senses, without another cup of coffee.” My scheduled morning yoga session on the beach was the perfect way to shake the cobwebs off my energy, restoring not only my vigour for the day ahead, but a long-forgotten sense of self. Over a spectacularly calm breakfast at French Riviera – the sea breeze and stunning view once again leaving me feeling wonderfully untroubled – I realised the true power of this sleep programme. It was never about making sure that I slept perfectly every night, nor instantly – rather, it was an opportunity for a reset. After far too many years of letting my well-being slide – repeatedly telling myself “I’ll just ignore it this one time, because I’m so busy right now” until the wellrested version of myself had morphed into a long-forgotten memory – this experience gave me the chance to remember how it felt to truly look after myself. To remember that sleep is a sort of housekeeper for the body that removes toxins and resets our systems from the mental to the physical – and that a lasting positive change requires not just one night of forty solid winks, but a lifestyle modification. With a little support, expert knowledge, and the chance to reexamine the patterns of my day-to-day in a beautiful, relaxing setting – all of which the Talise Spa Madinat Jumeirah Sleep Programme had given me – I might have finally found the push to rediscover what it feels like to not just sleep well, but live well.
TORONTO Time out in
Toronto might just be the perfect place to achieve the elusive work-life balance: cut deals in the financial district by day, cut loose in the beating heart of King Street West by night, and unwind in breathtaking natural beauty over the weekend.
The largest city in Canada, and the capital of Ontario, this multicultural hub is friendly, vibrant, industrious, and well-connected. Toronto Pearson International Airport, the
largest and busiest airport in Canada, handled 44.8 million passengers in 2023, with over 100 international routes. From 30 March, UK passengers have been able to enjoy the relaunch of Virgin Atlantic’s daily Toronto service – its first route to Canada in over a decade, which will complement existing UK services from Air Canada, Air Transat, and British Airways. Whether you can only escape meetings for an afternoon, or you’re planning an entire vacation, Toronto has plenty of sky-high thrills, cultural gems, and natural wonders to compete for a place on your itinerary.
TORONTO
Top attraction
Toronto’s skyscraper-studded skyline is dominated by one standout attraction: the CN Tower. At 553 metres tall, it held the record for the world’s tallest free-standing structure for 34 years, until Dubai’s Burj Khalifa surpassed it in 2009. While the tower serves as a working telecommunications hub for Canadian TV and radio, it’s also one of Toronto’s top tourist attractions, with observation decks and a revolving restaurant. If you enjoy the sensation of impending doom, then the

CN Tower EdgeWalk is for you. Suspended 356 metres above the ground, it remains the world’s highest external building walk – and is not for the faint of heart. After an ear-popping lift to the platform, the door opens to a 1.5-metre platform – with no barrier to steady yourself as the wind whistles past. You’re harnessed up to cables that could technically support the weight of an elephant or two – but try telling that to your nervous system. Thankfully you’re rewarded with an incredible vantage point of the city (provided you can open your eyes),

including the Toronto Islands in Lake Ontario – the location of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. As if standing on the edge of the sky wasn’t terrifying enough, guides have a series of “fun” challenges for you to complete. Cutesy names such as “toes over Toronto” belie how hard it is to inch over the platform, while you’re also dared to lean backwards into the abyss. If you manage it, you’ll be met with a surge of adrenaline and a sense of achievement, plus social media kudos thanks to the option to purchase photos and video of your experience (EdgeWalk costs $225 CAD including tax).
Touring Toronto’s neighbourhoods
Back on terra firma, and once legs have stopped wobbling, it’s time to explore Toronto’s vibrant neighbourhoods. Once home to the historic Gooderham & Worts Distillery, the Distillery District is now a charming cultural hub. Cobblestone streets and restored 19th-century buildings house independent boutiques, art galleries, dining spots, and eccentric shops, making it a haven for creatives and visitors alike.
Highlights include the Spirit of York distillery, where visitors can sample vodka, gin, rum, and whisky made on
site, and Soma for expertly crafted artisan chocolate. You could spend hours in Bergo Designs, a huge emporium of quirky homeware and gifts sourced from all over the world. Dining options range from French haute cuisine at Cluny to vibrant Mexican cuisine at El Catrin Destileria – complete with sides of fried crickets and an exhaustive tequila menu.
There’s also a rotating calendar of live events around the main square, and you can take a deep dive into the area’s heritage with a history walking tour. Plus, the area is a great setting for corporate gatherings – the Fermenting Cellar is popular for all sorts of exhibitions and events, most recently hosting a sensory experience by Illuminarium.
For a completely different vibe, Kensington Market is one of Toronto’s most eclectic neighbourhoods, known for its bohemian atmosphere. Tucked away near Chinatown, the area is a true melting pot of flavours and influences. It’s the kind of place where synagogues sit happily next to cannabis shops, and the famous “garden car” (an abandoned car that was filled with potted plants by residents) has been tended to for nearly 20 years. Wander down the colourful narrow streets filled with boutiques and famous vintage stores before diving into the multicultural eateries – fusion spots range from Rasta Pasta, where you’ll find a jerk chicken alfredo, to sushi pizza and Korean hotdogs. The neighbourhood is also home to colourful murals, street art and a thriving community of local artisans, making it a hub for creative expression. On weekends, the area is especially lively, with vendors selling fresh produce, flowers, and handmade goods.
Day trip beyond the city
Thundering Niagara Falls is a bucket list item for many and, being just an hour’s drive outside of Toronto, it’s an easy one to tick off with a spare morning or afternoon. The stunning Horseshoe Falls marks the border between Canada and the US, with the views from the Canadian side unparalleled. It’s quite something to witness the astounding spectacle, with 3,160 tons of water flowing

While the free roadside views are astonishing, you can ramp up the volume with the ‘Journey to the Falls’ experience, which takes you into the tunnels 38 metres below the waterfall. Alternatively, take a boat tour for a spray-soaked adventure that will give you an up-close and personal encounter.
If you have time for a full day trip, it would be remiss not to explore Niagara wine country. Immerse yourself in the art of wine production at the picturesque Peller Estates Winery. The one-hour winery tour dives into enormous oak barrel cellars and a freezing ice room for samples of the region’s unique ice wine. (Its secret? Frozen grapes are picked and pressed at night, so the sun doesn’t thaw them.) There’s a healthy amount of tasting to be done, meaning you emerge primed and ready to visit the gift shop. Tours can be followed by a wine-paired lunch in the formal dining room, with stunning views over the vineyards and manicured lawns.
You should also visit Niagara-on-the-Lake. With 19th-century architecture, a year-round Christmas store and an old-fashioned apothecary, it feels straight out of a
FEASTS AND BEATS
For the best dining and nightlife in Toronto, head to King Street West. This area, comparable to New York’s SoHo, offers a selection of upscale restaurants and bars.
Vaulted ceilings and Art Deco glitz create an impressive dining spot for authentic Italian eatery Oretta. Explore all the Italian classics, with most dishes available as gluten-free versions. Can’t choose? Try the chef’s seven-course tasting menu ($78 CAD).
Paris Paris, meanwhile, is a cool, modern bistro offering a relaxed yet refined setting with urban-chic decor and long sharing tables. The menu is based on seasonal, local ingredients, with everything from cheese and charcuterie to fresh seafood – the lobster spaghetti is a must. Come for light afternoon bites and stay to dance the night away.
Alternatively, Mexico meets the Mediterranean at 1 Hotel’s cool Casa Madera restaurant. Bold flavours and colourful sharing plates in a sultry setting draw in a sociable crowd, with an inventive cocktail list and live DJ sets to keep the party going. Mouthwatering menu items range from fresh ceviche to a seasonal rotating taco menu (keep your eye out for the jackfruit al pastor), plus truffle risotto and the house Tomahawk steak.

Escape for the weekend: Algonquin National Park
If anywhere offers the prime opportunity to abandon the city and get away from it all – Ontario does. The province is famed for its stunning natural beauty.
Algonquin National Park, in particular, is known for its brilliant display of fiery autumnal leaves, which have inspired countless artists. In fact, before you get lost in the wilderness, you should first make a pit stop at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg. This beautifully curated gallery is a true homage to nature, paying particular attention to indigenous art as well as some of Canada’s greatest artists – the Group of Seven. These seminal landscape painters rejected studios, preferring to camp and paint in the great outdoors – and no wonder, with such a muse on their doorstep. The stunning works showcase beauty, skill and insights as to how the landscape has shaped an artistic generation. Plus, a quiet moment of contemplation in the meticulous galleries is the perfect place to shake off city stress, before ditching it completely.
Arowhon Pines resort offers the perfect antidote to city life. With a serene lakeside setting deep in the forest (so deep you can say goodbye to your internet signal), the woodland retreat beckons those looking for rest and relaxation. Rustic cabins come in different shapes and sizes, with modern lakeside cabins offering private bathrooms and a wood-burning stove. As for what to do – it’s all
about freedom and nature. The area is teaming with hiking trails, flora , and fauna. Take an icy swim in the lake, explore the scenery in a kayak, or book the resort hot tub. Join fellow guests for movie nights and a game of chess in the common area, or cosy up in front of a fire pit and toast marshmallows. Meals are enjoyed in the main lodge around a crackling fire, with a hearty spread of salads and à la carte mains. The only thing missing is a bar – so stock up on your own relaxation potions. You’ll also want to brush up on your knowledge of what to do if you spot a bear –and what to be aware of during moose mating season!

BACKGROUND Opened in January 2024, this beautiful and unique restaurant located in Dubai’s Nad Al Sheba area is a homegrown brand created as a celebration of Emirati cuisine, culture, and hospitality. A sustainability-friendly farm-to-table e ort, it delivers a fine-dining take on Emirati cuisine, blending the best of its rich flavours, and historical cooking techniques with modern, elevated presentation. A project from Atelier House Hospitality and Tashkeel, its menu is led by chef Ionel Catau and chef Sahar Al Awadhi. The former hails from Romania and has had experience in Michelin-starred restaurants across the world, including in the UK, while the latter is an Emirati renowned for her award-winning work in pastry.
THE VENUE The restaurant’s name means “humble abode” in Arabic, and it’s a fitting title considering being here feels like you’re being welcomed to dine in someone’s extremely beautiful home. Tucked away in an incredibly peaceful part of Dubai (opposite the Nad Al Sheba Police Administration O ice, it’s situated in a restored 1987 building. The interiors were designed by Kristina Zanic Consultants, and its decor is truly impressive, with customcommissioned pieces that make it feel more like an ode to arts and culture than a mere restaurant. Inside, sumptuous interiors are complemented by nature-led elements, while on the outside, its tranquil back terrace is shaded by local Ghaf trees, woven awnings, and a gorgeous sunken area that is reminiscent of 70s conversation pits – except this one is outdoors, significantly more sophisticated than “groovy”, and comes complete with a fire pit in its centre.
It takes some of the best aspects of Emirati cuisine and presents them like never before
WHAT’S
IT LIKE? There is an extremely relaxing energy about this place that lulls you into a sense of serenity. The seating, the nature, and the quiet of the surrounding area all encourage you to slow down and take a breath as you enjoy the finer things in
life – except in this case, finer things is not defined by loud or extravagant opulence but rather, quiet luxury and genuine hospitality.
FOOD AND DRINKS Using as many locally-sourced, sustainable, farm-to-table ingredients as possible, this restaurant takes many of the best aspects of classic Emirati cuisine and presents them like you’ve never had them before. The menu is extensive and creative, with quirky choices like the Khali Wali Single Fried Cheese with Tru le Dip, or comforting classics like the warm and flu y Bun Maska. Its kebabs are juicy and impossibly flavourful, with the loomi kebab – Wagyu beef dressed with Arab cuisine’s iconic black lime – being a
standout choice. On the breakfast menu you’ll find everything from eggs and wa les to Chebab (Emirati pancakes) and Balaleet (a local dish with fragrant sweet vermicelli topped with an omelette), while for dinner, you’ll find luscious grilled meats, warm Khubz flatbreads straight from a brick oven, hearty Chicken Macarona, or spiced Salona stew, confit potatoes, and Machboos. Dessert is another adventure, with an array of unique gelato and sorbet flavours (including an egg-free option), Logaimat (a sweet Emirati dumpling akin to doughnut bites), and cakes. If you want to be wowed, order the “A Taste of Gerbou” cake – but it’s so pretty you may struggle to eat it. Like the savoury mezze platter (presented in an artful wooden tray), this dessert isn’t just a treat, it’s an edible sculpture.
SERVICE Service is sweet and sincere. Our waiter made us feel right at home instantly, and incredibly well taken care of.
VERDICT A must-try for longtime residents and tourists alike. Visit repeatedly to ensure you can try everything on the menu – and you’ll eat with your eyes, too! Yi-Hwa Hanna

Our
guide to… planning the ultimate Saudi Red Sea road trip
One of the most exciting up-and-coming tourism destinations in the world today, Saudi Arabia is a place with an enormous variety of things to do – from visiting historical sites rich with memories and mysticism from the past (like Diriyah), to thrilling events like The Dakar Rally: the world’s most prestigious endurance rally, which began in Bisha and concluded in Shubatayah this year. Inspired by this iconic marvel of navigation, endurance, and motorsport prowess, why not embark on your own more leisurely road trip along the Red Sea? From the cosmopolitan coastal hub of Jeddah – gateway to the Saudi Red Sea – to the three distinct regions spread across a 1,800km stretch of pristine coastline, this incredible destination is home to 1,000 islands, 500 dive sites and some of the world’s most fascinating cultural sites. This guide will take you through Jeddah – a city that bridges the past and the present with the UNESCO-listed Al-Balad, Historic Jeddah and sleek new developments including some entertainment and cultural gems – to the untouched coastal paradise of the Red Sea – with its crystal-clear waters and untouched natural wonders, in a five-day itinerary.
DAY 1 JEDDAH
Begin your journey in the beating heart of Jeddah. Historic Jeddah is the city’s UNESCOlisted district that hums with culture, from the coral-stone rawasheen houses with their intricate wooden latticework to the bustling souks overflowing with spices and textiles. Step into Nassif House Museum, a beautifully preserved merchant’s home that feels like stepping into another century of history. Let the scents of cardamom and oud guide you through the narrow lanes of Souq Al-Alawi, then as the sun sinks low, visit Historic Nights Rooftop Café, a local favourite, for golden views of this storied neighbourhood, with the call to prayer echoing across its timeworn walls. End
the day with a stay at Beit Jokhdar, a carefully restored family home turned guesthouse hidden in Al-Balad’s maze-like alleyways.
DAY 2 JEDDAH TO KING ABDULLAH ECONOMIC CITY (KAEC)
Distance: 120km
Drive time: 1.5 hours
Ease into the day with a breezy drive to KAEC, a sleek seaside escape, and head straight for Yam Beach, a sun-drenched stretch perfect for kayaking across turquoise waters, paddleboarding at your own pace or basking in the warm glow of the Saudi sunshine. When hunger calls, head to one of the area’s restaurants for a laid-back lunch, then afternoon adventures await at family-friendly Juman Park — hop on a bike and cruise its winding paths, or step up your game at the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, a world-class course framed by sea views and rolling greens. As the sun dips, check in to the stylish Bay La Sun Hotel and grab dinner on the waterfront terrace.
DAY 3 KAEC TO YANBU

Leave the polished streets of KAEC behind and head north to Yanbu, a coastal gem locals call the Pearl of the Red Sea. Here, time slows down, especially in the Old Town, where labyrinthine alleys hide artisan workshops, fragrant souks and crumbling coral stone homes that hark back to trading days gone by. Stroll along the Yanbu Corniche, a waterfront stretch where palm trees sway lazily in the sea breeze and cafés o er front-row seats to the turquoise horizon. But the real magic lies beneath the waves for keen snorkellers and
divers — Yanbu’s reefs are untouched masterpieces, brimming with fish, curious turtles and surreal coral formations.
DAY 4 YANBU TO UMLUJ

Drive time: 2 hours
Venture further up the coast to Umluj, a slice of paradise where the sea shimmers in impossible shades of turquoise, dotted with untouched islands that beg to be explored. End the day at with a barbeque on the beach, looking to the shimmering water and considering a day well spent. Or, if you’re feeling flush, head to Six Senses Southern Dunes, the newest resort along the Saudi Red Sea, just outside Umluj. A new jewel in the desert
Opened in February 2025, Desert Rock Resort is the third property owned and operated by Red Sea Global, and the fifth to open at the Saudi Red Sea. Its outstanding design by Oppenheim Architecture – complemented by interiors by Studio Paolo Ferrari – sees the resort cleverly integrated into the landscape. All of its 64 keys (encompassing 54 villas and 10 suites) come with a private pool and jaw-dropping views of the horizon. Within these are are Wadi Villas, Cliff Hanging Villas (built into the side of the mountain), Mountain Cave Suites (integrated into the massif itself, with cliffside plunge pools), and Mountain Crevice Villas (which appear to defy gravity, held aloft by rock pinnacles with oustanding views and swimming pools that seem to hang mid-air), and a fully-secluded Three-Bedroom Royal Villa.
