EDITOR’S LETTER

DEAR READER,

EDITOR’S PICKS

I never imagined I’d get used to this level of heat, and yet, somehow, here we are. The days are long, the mercury is high, and Dubai has officially entered its most extreme season. But if there’s one thing this city knows how to do, it’s adapt. And more impressively? It turns challenges into charm.

This month, we’re flipping the script on summer. Our cover feature celebrates the coolest escapes, quite literally. From the frosted slopes of Ski Dubai to new ice-themed dining experiences, and wellness treatments that use cryotherapy and cold immersion to recharge the body, our August issue proves that summer doesn’t have to mean sweltering.

We’ve also rounded up Dubai’s best garden cafés. Yes, lush, leafy spots do still exist in this heat, along with playful bars that offer more than just drinks: think quiz nights, retro games, and everything in between. And for those seeking a slower pace, we’ve mapped out the city’s best Pilates studios to help you stretch, strengthen and reset in air-conditioned bliss.

Of course, sometimes escaping the city is the best way to reconnect with it. We’ve included a dreamy story on stargazing in the UAE which is your reminder that even in summer, nature puts on its best show after dark.

I’m still relatively new to life in the UAE, and as I settle into my first full Dubai summer (send duas), I’m struck by how this city has mastered the art of contrast – fast and slow, fiery and frozen, always buzzing but somehow serene.

I hope this issue keeps you feeling inspired, informed and (most importantly) cool.

Until next time,

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Karim Nassar

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions, to favourite staycations and hidden gems. This month, we chat to eventsman, creator and skateboarder extraordinaire

Karim Nassar (@nawstique), who has been in Dubai for more than 30 years. Here he shares some of his top spots that you need on your radar.

Recently I stayed at Al Wathba resort in Abu Dhabi and it was a 10/10 experience. They have a restaurant where two beautiful horses free-roam, and you can interact/ feed them too. The spa was awesome, and you get direct access to the desert.

@alwathbahotel

There are loads of hidden gems around the UAE, but in Dubai specifically, the area around the Union Memorial Fountain Plaza in Deira has some super cool, super iconic shawarma spots like Halla Shawarma, Furat and Shawarma Alsag Cafeteria, to name a few. They have the best shawarmas you will ever have.

Dubai’s culinary offerings are some of the best, but one I’ve really enjoyed food and vibe-wise was Duomo in Downtown Dubai. It’s an Italian restaurant with this really cool projection on the ceiling of different interiors in Italy and some other abstract-esque designs. Also, Jun’s on the Downtown Boulevard. If you haven’t been, I’d highly recommend checking it out.

@duomodubai, @junsdubai

Personally, I go skating to switch off. Dubai’s home to so many skateparks now, like XPark on Kite Beach and the D3 Skate Park, and some are empty. I take my music and camera with me and just do my thing. Another spot is the new dog beach in Deira. It is one of the cleanest public beaches around, and the dogs make it so much better.

I recently discovered the beauty of camping in the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah. You’ll need a capable 4x4 to get up to Jabal Jais, and it’s about one hours’ drive to RAK from Dubai, then another hour’s hike up the mountain. But it’s super peaceful, so beautiful and the kind of place you could take a special someone to, or a group of friends. But maybe hold off until its cooler.

Lazy Saturday Brunch

The promise of a food hall should be a wildly intriguing offer for anyone who loves good food and general convenience. Basically: a tonne of great stuff to eat, all in one place. Here are the best in town…

The buzz of hungry crowds, the hiss of grills, and the scent of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods, Dubai’s food halls are a full-on sensory experience. These dynamic spaces bring a global spread of cuisines together under one roof, offering something for every palate. In recent years, the city’s food hall scene has exploded, with many venues opening in the last five years, and even as recently as 2024. These halls have also become key platforms for both up-andcoming chefs looking to break through, and established restaurateurs testing out fast-casual concepts in a flexible setting. The venues also successfully double as community hubs, often hosting everything from trivia nights and comedy shows to cooking classes and weekend markets. Behold, your ultimate guide to the city’s most exciting food halls.

CULINARA SOCIAL DINING

Perched high in the sky at The Link, One Za’abeel, Culinara Social Dining is Dubai’s latest culinary destination, and also its highest. The Link initially launched as a strip of high-end restaurants, but the concept didn’t quite stick. Now, they’ve flipped the script and gone all in on a bold new direction: a curated food hall packed with serious culinary talent. Officially launched in May, Culinara brings together a careful selection of original, homegrown dining concepts under one sleek, sky-high roof. And they’ve brought in the big guns. Chef Sperxos reimagines Greek-Mediterranean at The Dish, while Reif Othman brings the heat (and the noodles) at SIO Ramen House and KONA Pizza House. You’ll also find Crudo Raw Tapas Bar by Roberto Segura. The line-up continues with soulful Lebanese plates at Joumana’s Table, FrenchJapanese wellness dishes at NETTE, and speciality coffee at The Coffee Lab. At the centre of it all is HighBall, a sleek cocktail bar anchoring the space, flanked by gourmet retail spots ITALTOUCH and African + Eastern.

Culinara Social Dining, The Link, One Za’abeel, Trade Centre, daily noon to midnight. culinaradubai

DEPACHIKA

THE MARKET ISLAND

In a town flush with foodie-pleasing superlatives, The Market Island boldly claims the title of the largest food hall in the Middle East, which, in practice, makes it less food court, more culinary city. Located inside Dubai Festival City Mall, The Market Island spans 70,000 square feet with seating for over 3,500 guests. With over 40 kitchens under one roof, it’s a full-scale dining destination built around variety. From casual bites to chef-driven counters, the lineup spans continents and cuisines, with 16 Dubai debuts packed into the mix. Highlights include John Dory Seafood Market, the region’s first sustainable head-totail seafood concept, managing everything inhouse, from import and processing to open-fire cooking and retail. Tacos Camino by Shaw Lash (of Lila Taqueria) brings bold Mexican street food, Kooya delivers modern Filipino street vibes, and Homer Lobster stuffs its famous crustaceans into juicy, buttery rolls.

You’ll also find comforting Uzbek plates from Kelinka, and punchy Peruvian tapas from Chef Roberto Segura.

The Market Island, Dubai Festival City, Mon to Thur 10am to 11pm, Fri to Sun 10am to midnight. @market.island_uae

Inspired by Japan’s legendary department store basements, known as depachikas, this Dubai food destination brings a refined twist to the traditional food hall. Located in Nakheel Mall on the Palm, Depachika is a curated culinary space that blends gourmet groceries, artisanal finds, and specialty bites from some of the city’s best-loved names. Think immaculately packaged delicacies, regional treats, and high-end culinary craftsmanship. Depachika Dubai channels that spirit, offering everything from freshly made ramen at Daikan and sushi at Sals, to signature tiramisu from La Fabbrica and French treats by Odeon. Prime Gourmet’s ready-to-eat lasagne and Lime Tree’s café staples are just some of the other highlights on the lineup that we love. At the centre, you’ll find an array of boutique kiosks selling everything from mochi and handmade popcorn to artisanal salt and bean-to-bar chocolate. It’s part food hall, part luxury grocer, with a strong emphasis on quality and craftsmanship. Don’t miss the hidden gem: a gourmet cheese room tucked away at the back, perfect for the dairy devout. Depachika, Nakheel Mall, Palm Jumeirah, Sun to Thu 10am to 10pm, Fri and Sat 10am to midnight. @depachika.ae

NEIGHBOURHOOD FOOD HALL

TIME OUT MARKET

Time Out Market Dubai is where Dubai’s food scene comes to show off. Located in the heart of Downtown, inside the Souk Al Bahar dining and retail hub, this 43,000 sq ft space brings together 17 standout kitchens, three bars, a spacious outdoor terrace, and a curated mix of the city’s most exciting chefs, concepts, and dishes. The Dubai outpost offers a hand-picked lineup of what’s really worth eating right now. That means Pitfire’s cult-favourite pizza, Hattem Mattar’s smoked brisket, Three by Eva’s feta brûlée, and Lana Lusa’s rich, golden pastéis de nata. It serves a platform for celebrated, homegrown restaurants, those already earning serious recognition in the city. It offers these standout independents a bigger stage, placing them alongside other culinary heavyweights, each selected for being the best in their category, and it’s well worth a visit now and again, especially with out-of-towners.

Time Out Market Dubai, Downtown Dubai, Sun to Thur noon to midnight, Fri noon to 1am, Sat 10am to 1am. @timeoutmarketdubai

Tucked away in a stripped-back building in Motor City, Neighbourhood Food Hall has quietly become one of Dubai’s most compelling culinary destinations. It may not sit in a prime postcode, but what it lacks in location, it makes up for in soul. What started as a collection of unfamiliar names has grown into a magnet for the city’s most exciting chefs, thanks in no small part to founder Nicky Ramchandani, whose no-frills, full-of-heart approach has struck a chord with Dubai’s food community. Now, you’ll find heavy hitters alongside hidden gems. Chef Kelvin Cheung (of Jun’s fame) dishes out gloriously craveable American-style Chinese at Jooksing, while Chef Akmal Anuar (3Fils, Goldfish, Harumanis) slings creative, crispy pies at Pizzeria Funkcoolio, an offshoot of Osteria Funkcolio. But the beauty of NFH is in the line-up of independent brilliance: doughnuts by 11 Crumb & Co., juicy kebabs at Meating Room, Asian treats at Streetery, Malaysian and Singaporean flavours in Oriental Dining, killer Mexican at Tacos Los Hermanos, Maru Udon slurp specials, and more. If you’re quick, you might still catch a final bite of Al Naqa Lao Kebab House by AJ, his Grandma’s fried chicken is the stuff of legend. NFH is a love letter to Dubai’s local scene with genuinely good food made by people who care. Neighbourhood Food Hall, Green Community Retail, Motor City, Sun to Thur noon to 11pm, Fri and Sat noon to midnight. @neighbourhoodfoodhalls

STHE MILKY WAY AND I

In a galaxy actually not so far away…

WORDS: MANAAL FATIMAH

ummertime is for the stars. Especially in the UAE, when for about five months of the year, as the temperatures go up, our galaxy comes down to give us a glimpse of its infinite, incomprehensible beauty. The Milky Way, our galactic home, was named as such after how it is perceived Earthside - a hazy band of light seen in the night sky formed from stars in other arms of the galaxy, which are so far away that they cannot be individually distinguished by the naked eye. Quite literally, a milky way.

Milky Way sightings are a unique phenomenon of summers in the UAE. Also known as the Galactic River, the galaxy’s main arm and core are visible late at night, with the clearest and highest period for viewing being the months of July and August. As such, the galaxy is visible from May through October, and offers a stunning celestial sight which is as beautiful as it is rare.

Star chasers and gazers across the country look forward to this season with fervour, gearing up to spot some of the clearest sightings of the Milky Way in the entire year. Yousif Al Qasimi, night photographer and a member of the Dubai Astronomy Group, explains just how special this time is for enthusiasts of the cosmos in the country.

“The astrophotography community in the UAE is quite active. We share tips, organise group outings, and collaborate on workshops. There’s a real sense of excitement that builds up as the Milky Way season approaches,” explains Yousef. “For me, this season is a sacred time. I plan multiple expeditions across deserts and mountains to chase the galaxy under the darkest skies. It’s not just about

Yousif Al Qasimi
Mayed Al Qassimi’s photo collections

photography – it’s about reconnecting with the universe.”

Mayed Al Qassimi, fellow night photographer and budding atsronomer, paints a similar picture.

“Observing the Milky Way in the summer is just way better than in winter, we have long clear nights with the core of the Milky Way crystal clear. I go out about three to four times in the summer to the prime spots and I try to take as many images as I can. It’s a great way to run away from the heat as well.”

The place to be…

The best location to get a clear view of the Milky Way is Al Qua’a in Abu Dhabi, it is a sort of central point and the closest dark-sky site to most cities in the country. This remote location offers some of the most optimal conditions for stargazing, views of deep-sky objects, planetary details and the galactic spiral of the Milky Way, more spectacular than anything you can spot in the urban skies.

Besides this, there is also Al Qudra, the lowest light-pollution spot in Dubai, Fossil Rock in Sharjah and the Al Razeen Desert.

It all sounds great, but it’s not just rolling up to the desert, camera in hand. Real preparation goes into this process and not just on an individual level. Yousif explains how his preparation starts months in advance – scouting locations, monitoring weather forecasts, and aligning his schedule with the new moon phase for darker skies. Much of it also comes from just going at it. Mayed’s expeditions year on year have taught him how to plan his trips, the equipment he needs and dealing with unforeseen changes in plans.

When the stars align…

“Sometimes we find a nice spot, but our vehicles can’t reach it, so we have to take the trip on foot and start hiking in the heat. Staying light on the equipment is usually beneficial,” remarks Mayed, adding that the community also guides them. “The community prepares with astronomical events in spots like Sharjah, Al Qudra and Al Qua’a. They even give lessons on how to spot and capture the Milky Way for interested star chasers.”

Yousif explains that the best viewing conditions include a clear sky with no cloud cover, no moon, low wind or humidity, and minimal dust. Areas that are away from the light pollution of the cities are the most suitable spots, at least 35km away from city lights. The Dubai Astronomy Group advises drivers to follow a compact dirt path after leaving the paved road, which will lead to an open area suitable for observation. They are also advised to park a small distance away and walk the rest of it through the sand to prevent lights and dust from the car that could cloud the view

The galaxy will be visible to the naked eye after about 20 minutes in darkness, which is why eager observers are advised to reach the site with some time to spare to set-up and to allow their eyes to get used to the darkness.

“The most important thing is patience.”

Mayed suggests to download a sky map app to track the galaxy to know which time it will be peak and clear.

“Check the weather before heading out there. You really don’t want to go there when it’s all cloudy and waste your time and effort.”

FOR THE BEGINNERS…

Yousif suggests: A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a wide-angle lens (f/2.8 or faster) and a sturdy tripod

Mayed suggests: Taking long exposures then adjusting your exposure based on your first image taken

WHAT’S IN MY BAG?

Here’s what to pack for your star-chasing trips:

01 LED red lights to preserve night vision

02 Snacks for the road

03 Apps like PhotoPills or Stellarium to plan your shoot

04 Extra batteries

05 Cold drinks to stay hydrated

GATSBY DUBAI

Step into the roaring twenties Dubai style

Glamour, drama, and all that jazz. Gatsby Dubai is rewriting the rules of dinner and a show. Set high above Palm Jumeirah on the rooftop of Nakheel Mall, this electric supper club takes inspiration from the opulence of the 1920s and cranks it up to full-throttle. With dazzling performances, decadent dishes, and a party vibe that doesn’t quit, Gatsby is where the night begins…and never really ends.

The Spot

Perched atop Nakheel Mall on the Palm, Gatsby Dubai isn’t just a dinner spot, it’s a fullblown spectacle. Inspired by the wild spirit of the Roaring Twenties, it’s where velvet, drama, and deep house beats collide. Think dinner party meets fever dream with sequins, spotlights, and seriously good food in the mix.

The Vibe

nobody, and Gatsby Dubai delivers on that promise.

The Food and Drinks

From the moment you step in, Gatsby is a sensory experience, glamorous, highenergy, and completely unfiltered. As you dine, themed live shows light up the room, with dancers shifting from Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to Britney Spears Baby One More Time and Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees. No two performances are the same, and every one is electric. Like the anthem goes: a little party never killed

It’s not just a party, the kitchen takes itself seriously too. The menu walks the line between indulgent and elevated. Start with the beef carpaccio or the creamy burrata, both crowd-pleasers. The roasted baby chicken is tender and flavourful, while the Mediterranean-style seabass is light, fresh, and beautifully plated. Every guest enjoys a full dining experience: starter, main, dessert, and drinks. Cocktails are as dramatic as the venue, punchy, playful, and photogenic.

The Service

Sharp, seamless, and perfectly paced. Dishes and drinks are served in between performances so you’re never interrupted during a show, just relaxed, present, and ready for every act. It’s a well-choreographed experience, where service flows with the rhythm of the night.

What to Order

CHAR X AROUND THE BLOCK:

Dubai’s newest homegrown concept

The Spot

Located inside Nad Al Sheba Mall, CHAR is the latest flame-fired concept from the team behind Around The Block, a homegrown Emirati café brand known for switching things up with every new venture. It’s the laidback coffee haunt you know and love, the grill is lit, the lights are dimmed, and CHAR takes over. Expect bold, char-driven flavours, smokelicked meats, and cold plates that strike a balance between rich and refreshing.

The Vibe

This isn’t a high-speed, high-energy kind of place. Instead, CHAR leans into a more relaxed rhythm. It’s rather casual with open flames visible from your seat and a soundtrack that keeps things mellow. The setting evolves throughout the day from a morning coffee shop to low-lit grill bar and the transformation works.

The Food and Drinks

The food is where CHAR hits its stride. The chicken shawarma, assembled live in front of you, is a standout. Rich, juicy, and wrapped with house pickles for that ideal balance of punch and tang. The wagyu tenderloin comes bathed in a zaatar truffle butter that elevates it to indulgent perfection. And the Moroccan bread, pillowy and heavy on parmesan, makes for an excellent starter (if you’re into cheese). Don’t miss the street corn, which brings a good amount of kick and umami thanks to generous parmesan and spice. To drink?

The Coal Cola is CHAR’s take on a cleaner, fresher cola, and the Yuzu Kick feels like ginger ale’s sharper, cooler cousin. Both are nonalcoholic and exclusive to the venue. Refreshing, surprising, and worth ordering twice. The coffee is a must too.

The Service

The team is friendly, but very laid back, so don’t expect fine-dining polish.

The staff move at a relaxed pace, and their casual approach sets the tone across the space and suits a mellow evening. Something to note: the kitchen closes for an hour around 5pm to prep for dinner service, so timing your visit matters.

What to Order

❑ Moroccan bread

❑ Street corn

❑ Chicken shawarma

❑ Wagyu tenderloin

❑ Yuzu Kick and homemade Coal Cola

What’s On the Bill

Expect to spend around Dhs350–450 for two, depending on how many plates and drinks you try. The value is in the flavour and originality.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Thoughtful, smoky and refreshingly different. CHAR has all the ingredients to become a cult favourite, but go with patience and a big appetite.

MR CHOW

This new spot brings a slice of London snobiety meets Dubai bling…

The Spot

One thing is for sure about Mr Chow - the legacy is inimitable. Born in 1968, the baby of artist, actor, and famed restaurateur Michael Chow, this famed Chinese spot opened doors on Valentine’s Day, of all days, in London, and the rest is history. Now sitting on a cool eight locations, including this brand new one in Dubai’s DIFC, Mr Chow is serving up status and exquisite Beijing cuisine to diners in a splashy corner of the city.

The Vibe

The formula to a space that feels lavish is quite simple: high ceilings, low lighting, and Mr Chow gets that just right. While the floor itself is not massive, occupying a small corner of DIFC with stunning skyline views out of floor-to-ceiling windows, the whole restaurant is decked out in tonal shades, with dark walls, dark furniture, feather white tablecloths and minimal white centrepieces. Everything is shiny and polished, from the reflective ceiling to the moonlit corners, and it all feels intentional – a perfectly moody reimagination of the essence of Dubai’s nightlife.

The Food and Drinks

On the menu, you’ll find Words: Manaal Fatimah

sharing-style dishes with a combination of old authentic Beijing recipes and Mr Chow’s signature creations such as the chicken satay, Mr Chow noodles, and ma mignon. For our meal, we started off with glazed prawn with walnuts (Dhs164), a sweet, nutty, earthy concoction of well cooked prawns with the perfect bite, and the Mr Chow noodles (Dhs154), an original straight from 1968, with fresh, handmade noodles and a slick, oily sauce of chicken mince flaunting fire and flavour. We also sample the chicken satay (Dhs92 each) and crispy beef (Dhs253) – both surprises. The satay comes with a sweet fried coating and a rich, creamy white sauce. The beef is also sweet, chewy and with a slight hint of citrus.

The Beijing duck (Dhs516 per person) is the star of the meal. Carved tableside with all the pomp and show one might expect from a Mr Chow, it comes with soft wraps, sweet, spicy and umami duck sauce and sliced cucumbers and greens for a bit of freshness and texture. Roll everything up into a wrap and enjoy. The duck is juicy and tender, thankfully not dry as is the perennial problem with roasted birds

and this is a classic you can’t miss. We end with a mango parfait and a delicious mix of berries served in a bowl made entirely of ice. Both are fruity, fresh, light and a fitting end to the luxuriant meal we’ve had so far.

The Service

Sharp, keen, like their severe, starched white tuxedos, flashing brilliant smiles and knowing exactly what to recommend. The staff at Mr Chow is here to offer that fine dining service for their fine dining prices.

What to Order

❑ Mr Chow noodles

❑ Glazed prawn with walnut

❑ Beijing duck

❑ Mango parfait to finish

What’s On the Bill

Expect to pay around Dhs2,000 for two, including drinks.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

If not for anything else, go for the legacy.

A NEW MOON FOR MOONRISE

Chef Solemann Haddad opens up about evolving his beloved culinary creation...

After another triumphant Michelin season, Chef Solemann Haddad is restless. When we connect over a video call, he’s dialling in from his car, experimenting with virtual backgrounds. Eventually, he settles on a pixelated beach, a tongue-in-cheek reminder that even one of Dubai’s most acclaimed chefs likes to keep things light. It sets the tone for our conversation: candid, unfiltered, and brimming with the same creative energy that’s made him a force in Dubai’s culinary scene.

The chef owner of Moonrise, a constant on every self-proclaimed, self-respecting Dubai foodie’s tongue like a chant, is looking to conquer a new challenge. It hasn’t been long since the restaurant retained it’s one Michelin star during this year’s awards season, but we already have a new era of Moonrise to look forward to, complete with a brand new look, feel and some new culinary creations to contend with.

“I had nothing more to give in that space as it was,” says Haddad. “ I’m not about staying in the past. Something that

also bothered me a lot was the space we inherited, so it never matched the cuisine, and now we finally have a chance to make an alignment, to keep it singular.”

For the unenlightened, Moonrise opened doors in a quiet corner of bustling Satwa four years ago. It was a concept to capture attention from the start, 12 seats on one side of the bar, a team of chefs working together on the other, united by the intimate, communal nature of it all.

Words: Manaal Fatimah

touched by Dubai, and that is exactly what he wanted this evolution to reflect.

“I didn’t want to be inspired by anything in the Middle East or in Middle Eastern culture,” explains Haddad. “I always think of myself as a palm tree. I’m not uniquely tied to any country in the region, but every country in the region has a palm tree. Following that logic, I thought if we need to have a space that’s grounded in our identity, we need to eliminate culture and we need to follow nature, because we cannot connect to only one culture; we’re a synergy of them all.”

The new space which is in Eden House, Satwa is inspired by the feeling of sitting around a campfire and the idea that it brings people together. It’s a juxtaposition of sorts; reflecting that essence of familiarity of a community and the discovery of something wholly unique from those differences within. Haddad’s one line summation of the inspiration involves aliens, a spaceship, Liwa and a campfire, but somehow, it makes sense.

“We are the fire, we are the source of the energy. If there are strangers sitting around the campfire, nothing brings them together except the fire. We’re that warmth.”

Moonrise quickly found a home in many hearts with a brand of Dubai-inspired food so unique, it can still lay that claim with confidence. Dubai-born, Haddad takes what it means to come of age in a cultural mish-mash like that of this city by extracting those very ‘Dubai’ experiences, and plating them up with flair and finesse. Moonrise stands for the people who are

As such, every element of the space, designed in collaboration with local, female-led firm H&H Interior Design, is inspired by Dubai, connected to the region in a “non-cultural way”. The custom-built palmwood table made from compressed date palm, the terrazzo inspired by the Dubai homes of the 90s, it all embodies this in the best way possible. As for the food, a new menu with some old favourites are on the way, and like this conversation, Haddad is gearing up for a season of spontaneous production.

“I want to work with a lot of Middle Eastern ingredients. I definitely want to continue not making Arabic food, but definitely use more Arabic ingredients,” says Haddad, adding that he doesn’t want to stray away into the high-nosed medium of fine dining.

He just wants to keep it real. Moonrise is set to open in mid August.

IS COMING TO DUBAI MACY GRAY

There are voices you hear once and never forget. Macy Gray’s is one of them. That raspy, soul-soaked sound, wrapped in raw emotion and playful rebellion, has defined her career for over two decades. And now, for the first time, the Grammy Award winning R&B icon is heading to Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena for a one-night-only concert on August 29, 2025 as part of the city’s buzzing Dubai Summer Surprises calendar.

It’s not just any performance. This concert marks the 25th anniversary of Gray’s seminal debut album, On How Life

Is, the record that introduced her to the world in 1999. If you were anywhere near a radio at the time, you couldn’t escape I Try, her signature hit that cemented her place in music history and picked up a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance. Even now, hearing it feels like a warm hug wrapped in melancholy, the sort of song that hits you right in the feelings, every time.

But Macy Gray is far from a one-hit wonder. On How Life Is went triple platinum, selling over 25 million albums worldwide, and tracks like Still,

Why Didn’t You Call Me, and Beauty in the World followed, showcasing her unique ability to straddle soul, funk, R&B, and pop with a touch of jazz whimsy. She’s not just a singer, she’s a storyteller, a mood, and a complete vibe.

As a long-time fan, what excites me most is the energy Gray brings to her live performances. Backed by her band, The California Jet Club, every show is a masterclass in stage presence and musical storytelling. She doesn’t just sing, she captivates, she jokes, she bares her soul. And in a venue like Coca-Cola Arena, known for its electric atmosphere and flawless sound, this promises to be an unforgettable night.

For Dubai, this is a big deal. The city has seen a growing lineup of major international acts recently, but hosting Macy Gray feels special. She’s an artist who speaks across generations, and the intimacy of her lyrics paired with her unorthodox voice is the kind of live experience that lingers long after the final note.

If you’ve never seen her live, this is your chance to catch an icon in action. And if, like me, you’ve had I Try on repeat since the late 90s, then you already know that you have to be there.

Macy Gray Live in Dubai

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

Akanksha Chowdhry

Manaal Fatimah

Most fashion lovers would agree that an outfit is only as good as the accessories you wear with it. As I look over Akanksha Chowdhry’s pieces, I think I’m starting to understand what that means. Chowdhry, a jewellery designer, wears many hats; she’s a creative, and a self-proclaimed womanpreneur and Chief Everything Officer. She’s in the business of beautification, and that, in itself, is an art.

Her brands create stunning, timeless Indian adornments, “evergreen heirlooms” that incorporate the oldest, most traditional styles and techniques of jewellery making from across the Indian subcontinent – polki, meenakari, kundan, jadau and beyond.

Her foray into the world of jewellery began quite by chance. Inspired by the burgeoning reach of Facebook shops, a new, fascinating mode of retail therapy, she took a modest loan of Dhs1,500 from her mother, grabbed some pieces from a wholesale supplier and opened her own Facebook page. This was 10 years ago, and the rest is history.

“As interest slowly grew, my fascination with this intricate craft deepened significantly. This growing passion led me to pursue formal studies as a jewellery designer and gemologist, allowing me to truly dive into the details and understand all its complexities,” explains Chowdhry.

Starting with costume jewellery and eventually expanding into silver, today her collection of labels includes Nayirah, the seed of the tree, Sanber, offering lab grown diamond jewellery, and Al Afiyah, dedicated to natural gems and high jewellery.

It all sounds quite rosy, but the journey that led to this moment was far from it. The high was incredible – exhibitions in over 30 cities worldwide, from the vibrant energies of Dubai and Abu Dhabi to the iconic streets of New York, Toronto, Singapore, Hong Kong, Washington DC and others; a clientele including top Bollywood celebrities and two beautiful boutiques in India.

And then came the low, the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I lost what words can never express. The boutiques, my business, the momentum. The most profound and excruciating pain arrived with the passing of my mother, the very founder of my life and the invaluable co-founder of my brand. Navigating that grief, while simultaneously rebuilding from the ashes, has been nothing short of crazy. That truly is the most fitting word,” recalls Chowdhry. “The crucible of these experiences has forged what I can only describe as the most insightful, real-life MBA.”

“THE BEST INSPIRATION OFTEN APPEARS WHEN YOU’RE NOT ACTIVELY CHASING IT”

The operational challenges are an unavoidable part of running a global business. The difficult customers, the stress of logistics across timezones and the race of staying relevant, but as a creative, the hurdles are unique. When asked how she navigates periods of creative burnout, Chowdhry says disconnecting from her craft reignites that spark for her.

“It’s during these periods that I delve into a personal interest or a cherished hobby. Inspiration is truly everywhere. It might be something as simple as visiting a new café, taking a trip, or even finding a connection with a character’s style in a book. And in my experience, the best inspiration often appears when you’re not actively chasing it,” she says.

And this is where the cycle of a piece of Nayirah jewellery begins. Find the inspiration, harvest the ideas, create a mood board, and then bring it to life with sketches and CAD models. A very important piece of the puzzle is of course, her team, the designers and the skilled craftsmen, who synergise the process of design and production.

“The artisans are a group of highly experienced and talented individuals. They’ve perfected their craft over decades, and I’m profoundly fortunate to be blessed with a phenomenally talented team. A beautiful fusion of Gen Z’s fresh perspectives and the seasoned insights of Millennials ensures a rich tapestry of opinions and ideas,” remarks Chowdhry, adding that this very mix of personalities allows the brand to incorporate trends into their timeless work.

So, what’s next for Nayirah? Chowdhry has a grand roadmap into the Middle East which is an ambitious plan, but fiery ambition is what brought her here.

“Our ambition is to become the definitive destination for every discerning jewellery connoisseur in the UAE and across the Middle East. Ultimately, my personal vision, is the legacy I endeavour to forge, deeply rooted in the cherished memory of my mother. Her profound values of honesty and sincerity are not merely principles, but the non-negotiable cornerstones that illuminate our path, day after day.” @nayirahofficial

DON’T LET THE HEAT DRAIN YOU

Feel your best all summer with Coach Nazia’s hacks

From hot temps and low energy to sugar cravings and sluggish mornings, summer can throw your routine off balance. Coach Nazia tackles all the burning questions we’re asking this season as your guide to staying healthy, energised, and feeling great starts here.

How does the intense summer heat in the UAE affect our body’s hydration and energy levels?

The UAE’s soaring summer temperatures can cause significant fluid loss through sweat, even without strenuous activity. This often leads to dehydration, fatigue, headaches, and reduced physical and mental performance. Even a 1 to 2 percent drop in hydration can leave you feeling sluggish and foggy. Staying hydrated is

non-negotiable – not just for comfort but for overall health and productivity. Personally, I increase my daily water intake from two to three litres.

What are some common mistakes people make with their diet and exercise routine during hotter months? Many either skip meals because the heat suppresses appetite, or overcompensate with sugary iced drinks which can actually dehydrate you further. Another mistake is pushing through outdoor workouts in peak heat, risking heat exhaustion, or abandoning movement altogether. I love early morning outdoor walks in the cooler months, but in summer I switch to indoor treadmill walks. Simple, safe, and still effective.

Are there specific foods or ingredients you recommend to help beat the heat and stay energised?

Absolutely! Hydrating, water rich foods are your best friend. Cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, and leafy greens are great. Coconut water is a fantastic natural electrolyte booster. I also turn to cooling herbs like mint, coriander, and fennel, especially in light meals seasoned with lemon, ginger, or yogurt to support digestion.

What are some smart ways to stay hydrated beyond just drinking water?

Hydration is foundational. You wouldn’t drive a car without fuel, so why run your body without water? It’s not optional. I always say, water is more important than food. Aim for two or three litres daily, and beyond plain water, try herbal teas, infused waters (with mint, citrus, or cucumber), and high water content fruits. I often add a pinch of himalayan salt or an electrolyte tablet to support better fluid absorption especially if you’re sweating more or fasting.

Does our metabolism or appetite change in summer? How do we adapt our eating habits?

In hotter weather, your appetite naturally drops as your body works to stay cool. Heavy meals become harder to digest, so opt for lighter, more frequent meals. Choose lean white proteins, fibre-rich veggies and salads, hydrating fruits like watermelon, and smart carbs like quinoa, buckwheat, wild rice, and sweet potato in portion-controlled servings. Always aim to eat until you’re about 80 percent full, and leave some room for digestion.

“ALWAYS AIM TO EAT UNTIL YOU’RE ABOUT 80 PERCENT FULL, AND LEAVE SOME ROOM FOR DIGESTION”

Can you recommend some healthy, cooling snacks or meals ideal for summer days in the UAE?

Some of my favourites:

• Chilled cucumber and mint yogurt bowls

• Fresh fruit platters with watermelon, berries, and kiwi

• Smoothies with coconut water, spinach, mango, and chia seeds

• Grilled veggie wraps with hummus

• Cold quinoa or lentil salads with lemon dressing

• Frozen banana “nice” cream

How can people maintain their fitness goals if outdoor workouts are off the table due to the heat?

Take your workouts indoors. There are so many options, from virtual programmes to gym classes or simple at-home circuits.

I include all of these in my app for the weight loss community I coach. Morning or post-sunset walks are also great alternatives. Focus on consistency, not intensity as just 20 minutes a day can make a difference. Walking is one of the most underrated tools for weight loss. It tones the legs and core beautifully. Many of my clients are losing a kilo a week through a combination of smart nutrition and daily walks.

Is it safe to fast during summer (e.g., intermittent fasting) in such a hot climate? Why or why not? It can be, but only if done with intention. Prioritise hydration during non-fasting hours, and avoid direct sun or intense workouts while fasting. Break your fast with water-rich, nutrient-dense foods like the ones above.

These foods help replenish energy stores and support sustained energy release.

Do you have any tips for staying consistent with a healthy routine during travel or staycations?

Consistency starts with planning. I always pack snacks, hydrate before flights, and choose hotels with gyms or access to walkable areas. Stick to a simple morning routine: movement, hydration, and a nourishing breakfast. I make sure any hotel I stay in has a well-equipped gym, and I love morning walks. When discipline becomes part of your identity, routine becomes portable, you carry your lifestyle with you, no matter where you go.

What’s one myth about summer nutrition or fitness you’d love to debunk?

That sweating more equals fat loss! Sweat is your body’s way of cooling down, not a sign of burning fat. Many confuse water loss with weight loss. Real fat loss comes from consistent habits, balanced nutrition, regular strength and cardio workouts, and proper recovery, not how soaked your clothes are after a session.

The

BROOKLYN’S COOLEST CORNER:

Williamsburg

A creative enclave where music pulses, the coffee’s punch, and the skyline views are unbeatable

Words: Laura Coughlin

In Williamsburg, Brooklyn, you get the best of New York minus the chaos. Think cobblestone streets, skyline views, leafy parks, and a food scene that’s equal parts cutting-edge and cosy. Indie bars, stylish hotels, and that effortless cool only Brooklyn pulls off, just one stop from Manhattan on the L Train.

Once an industrial hub of factories and dockyards, Williamsburg has reinvented itself as one of the city’s most magnetic enclaves – gritty past still visible beneath its polished surface. Artists moved into vacant warehouses in the ‘90s, transforming the landscape with murals, music, and makeshift galleries. That creative DNA still pulses through its streets, now flanked by sleek condos, coffee labs, and boutiques where vintage meets avant-garde. The neighbourhood is a collision of past and present, where old-school Italian delis rub shoulders with minimalist concept stores and rooftop cocktail bars.

Today, Williamsburg is where New Yorkers come to slow down, turn up, or disappear into a leafy courtyard with an oat milk cortado. It’s where creatives launch brands, chefs test boundaries, and community still matters, even as the skyline rises.

Here’s our carefully curated guide to the neighbourhood…

COFFEE + BAGELS

Leon’s is the place to be on a weekend morning in Williamsburg. Stroll past this Bedford Ave gem any time after 8am and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a scene where Gossip Girl collides with a ‘90s hipster Gap ad. But beyond the top-tier people-watching, Leon’s serves up some of the best bagels in the borough – thick, soft, and so fresh you’d swear they were baked seconds ago. The move? Their bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. It’s got that chewy, satisfying New York bagel bite, an epic cheese pull, and enough swagger to fuel your whole day. Big, bold, and soulful, just like the neighbourhood. @leonsbagelsnyc

PIZZA + WINGS

SHOP + SWEAT

Heatonist is Williamsburg’s fiery little temple to all things hot sauce, a tasting room and shop where spice lovers can sample their way through over 150 small-batch bottles from around the world. There’s no Sriracha here; the shelves are stacked with craft blends like blueberry ghost pepper, pineapple habanero, and jalapeño tequila lime, all free from extracts and preservatives. A gloved “hot sauce sommelier” is always on hand to guide you through the heat levels and flavour notes at the tasting bar. @heatonist

Ace’s Perfect Pizza in Williamsburg feels more like a pizza party than your average slice shop. With retro booths, a working N64, and kitsch memorabilia, the vibe is just as memorable as the food. The move here is Detroit-style: thick, airy slices with zesty tomato sauce and a golden halo of crispy cheese. Keep it classic with pepperoni, it’s simple, satisfying, and hard to beat. If you’re in the mood for something extra, the adobo wings are citrusy, spicy, and totally snackable.

SUNBATHE + SAUNA

Bathhouse with a capital B is Williamsburg’s sleek answer to the classic spa. Housed in a converted 1930s soda factory, it blends raw industrial textures, exposed brick, vaulted ceilings, and the original smokestack, with modern wellness upgrades like heated marble hammams, a starlit steam room, and a full menu of massages, scrubs, and stretch sessions. It’s a calm, stylish space that still feels rooted in the neighbourhood. Spend the afternoon cycling through thermal pools – hot, cold, and neutral – or hit the sauna and Russian-style banya between treatments. If you’re looking to elevate the experience, book a rooftop daybed. You’ll have full access to all the facilities inside, plus that outdoor pool, skyline views, and the luxury of lounging in your robe with a drink in hand.

@bathhouse

MICHELIN PLATES + NATURAL WINES

Reservations are essential, or be ready to queue at The Four Horsemen, Williamsburg’s eternally cool wine bar co-owned by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. Inside, it’s all warm wood, low light, and just enough scene. The natural wine list is sharp and ever-evolving, with a staff that’ll steer you toward something unexpected but spot-on. Chef Nick Curtola’s small plates are clean, seasonal, and quietly spectacular. Think veal sweetbread skewers with soy-cured egg yolk, golden-fried skate wing, or a crisp chickpea crepe laced with squash blossoms and glistening lardon. Even dessert has swagger: crème caramel with crispy soba bits. A decade in, it’s still a magnet for wine lovers and foodies.

@fourhorsemenbk

DANCE + DISCO

Slip through an unmarked door in a former Williamsburg warehouse and you’ll find yourself transported to late1970s Rome. Ciao Ciao Disco is part cocktail lounge, part retro fever dream. The vibe kicks off at 7pm Thursday to Sunday with an aperitivo hour of Negronis, spritzes, and salty snacks. But the real magic happens around 10pm, when the room opens into a mirrored discoteca and the neon dance floor lights up under a spinning disco ball. Expect a live DJ, mirrored walls, and a packed crowd moving to the beat of Diana Ross, Bee Gees, and a disco remix of Relight My Fire. @ciaociaodisco

SLEEP + STYLE

The Wythe Hotel nails the Williamsburg vibe, set in a 1901 factory between McCarren Park and the hip waterfront, it’s been revamped just enough to keep its cool. The rooms are roomy (for NYC), with concrete floors, big windows, subway-tiled bathrooms, and all the right gritty-chic touches. Downstairs, Le Crocodile serves unfussy French fare from the team behind Chez Ma Tante, and upstairs, Bar Blondeau offers cocktails with killer Manhattan views. It’s not a luxury hotel, but it doesn’t try to be. Every detail, from the bath products to the minibar, is thoughtfully picked and perfectly Brooklyn.

IN THE SHADOW OF MOUNT

With travel restrictions lifted for citizens of the UAE and Kuwait, Iain Akerman went in search of the Lebanon Mountain Trail and some of the country’s most spectacular landscapes

It’s been three years since I last visited Lebanon. For someone who has spent the best part of two decades exploring the country, such a hiatus feels like a lifetime. So, with the travel bans imposed by the UAE and Kuwait on their citizens travelling to Lebanon lifted, I decided to head back. Not because everything is fine – it isn’t – but because I missed Lebanon. My base for five days was to be Hamra, still arguably Beirut’s greatest intersection of culture, cuisine, and restless, round-the-clock energy. It’s where you’ll find Barzakh, a bookshop, library, café, and events space all rolled into one, and Mezyan, a culinary gem tucked away in the Rasamny Building on Hamra Street. Recent years may not have been kind to Hamra, but it still retains a gridlocked, shabby, car horn-honking kind of charm.

Although West Beirut is my base, the plan is to eventually head east into Mount Lebanon before continuing north in the direction of Tannourine, shadowing the Lebanon Mountain Trail as we go. The long-distance hiking route runs for 450 kilometres from Andqet in the north to Marjaayoun in the south, passing through more than 75 towns and villages along the way.

On my first morning, however, I head to Malak el Foul, one of the best foul and hummus joints in Beirut. Situated in lower Hamra, not far from the American University of Beirut, this hole-in-the-wall eatery has a handful of tables, two of which occupy a section of the street outside. The menu is small and consists only of foul, hummus, fatteh, and eggs. But it’s cheap, generous, and delicious. So good, in fact, that I return three mornings in a row, savouring the msabaha (whole chickpeas in a tahini-rich sauce) and large bowls of both fatteh and foul.

In the afternoon, I go in search of Hamra’s legendary bookstores, stopping only to spend time at Cafe Younes, a Hamra stalwart now located on the ground floor of a bright yellow 1950s villa on Baalbeck Street. Unfortunately, many of the bookstores have closed since my last visit, having been pushed to financial ruin by the country’s economic collapse, the port explosion of 2020, and escalating unrest in the region.

Mount Lebanon
Barzakh
Cafe Younes

It’s hard to write about a place with optimism when its realities are so violently at odds. Sheltered in the relative bubbles of West or East Beirut, there’s an unnerving dissonance between the daily life unfolding around you and the destruction and suffering just a few miles away. And yet, amidst the destruction, there is renewed hope that an influx of affluent visitors from the Gulf will help revitalise Lebanon’s ailing economy. Nevertheless, much of Lebanon remains off limits. Foreign governments advise against all travel to any town or village south of the Litani River. All but essential travel is also discouraged to large tracts of southern Mount Lebanon Governorate, pretty much all of the Beqaa Valley, and the country’s far north, meaning the trail’s northern and southern extremities are out of bounds. Even Jezzine, famed for its waterfall and cliff-edge restaurants, shouldn’t be visited if you follow travel advice to the letter.

That said, play it by ear. Most Lebanese will advise you not to travel south of the Litani River, but some areas in the Beqaa and northern Lebanon may be accessible depending on the latest developments and local advice.

ON THE ROAD

Our journey begins in Baskinta, home to Krikor Bakery, although we’re technically and unapologetically cheating by combining (mainly) driving with the occasional stroll. Set back from the main road, the bakery is run by Krikor and his wife Laure and serves a mouthwatering array of manakeesh from Friday to Sunday (7am to 3pm). When we arrive, Krikor’s hands are dusted with flour and have that weathered artisanal look that only craftsmen possess. Strong yet gentle, generous yet precise, they knead, grate, cut, and mix a selection of fresh ingredients. Be warned, don’t over-order – everything arrives with the fullness of Lebanese generosity.

On the eastern edge of Baskinta, we stop at a memorial garden for the poet and novelist Mikhail Naimy. It’s the first stop on the Baskinta Literary Trail, which, for 24 kilometres, shadows the Lebanon Mountain Trail. Depending on time and monetary constraints, you can either walk the latter in stages or in its entirety, stopping at guesthouses along the way. Even single stages, however, can be extremely challenging. Aside from the rugged terrain, the trail includes river and stream crossings, mountain ridges, and steep ascents and descents. In some areas, there are no visible paths – only trail signs to follow.

From Baskinta, we head north, past Faraya and on towards Aaqoura. Of all the places I’ve visited in Lebanon, Aaqoura is one

Krikor Bakery

Bekaa Valley

of the most memorable – not for any single landmark, but for the sheer sense of space. A series of small terraced reservoirs lie scattered across the mountain plateau, offering panoramic views of the peaks and valleys that surround us. In every direction, the highlands of Mount Lebanon stretch for as far as the eye can see.

At one point during our walk, I head towards what looks like a makeshift encampment, where goat herders tend to their livestock. Dozens of goats are dotted across the nearby slopes, slowly making their way home to the sounds of whistles and the rhythmic tap of a stick on stone. They are milked to the ringing of a distant church bell before being corralled into a wooden pen. Apart from the occasional bleating, there is little sound.

Up this high, the roads are winding and narrow, often with spectacular views to either side. As we slowly make our way northwards, past the villages of Aayoun El Aalaq Laqlouq and Baourta, we eventually reach a spot within walking distance of the Baatara Gorge waterfall. Once there, we are greeted by water falling approximately 255 metres into a deep limestone cave. In full flow, water cascades through the openings formed by three natural stone bridges, creating a breathtaking, multi-layered cascade that seems to disappear into the earth.

From the waterfall, you can make a choice.

Either continue along the mountain trail towards Tannourine ElFawqa, or take a side mission to Douma. We opted for the latter. Douma is one of those rare picture-postcard Lebanese villages – all red-tiled roofs, quarried sandstone, and triple-arch windows – and is something of a beaut. At its heart lies a well-preserved old souk, where you can pick up everything from local olive oil and zaatar to halewe and raha (a sweet pastry covered with a thin layer of icing sugar). The village is also home to Beit Douma, part of Kamal Mouzawak’s culinary and hospitality empire Souk El Tayeb.

If you have the time, head further north towards Ehden, a mountainous city nestled among cedar forests, and the breathtaking Qadisha Valley. For now, however, our journey is over. On the drive back to Beirut we stop for ice-cream at Bachir. The ice-cream is rolled in crushed pistachios and crowned with a rosette of whipped cream. Such is its size, it takes the remainder of our journey to finish it. As I do, I think how happy I am to have returned.
