Early Chinese immigrants arrived on Maui aboard trading or whaling ships, destined to build tunnels and irrigation systems through the mountains. They formed the Wo Hing Society to nurture the ex-pat community, providing social contacts, support in times of crisis and housing for retired workers. It also supported the revolutionary activities of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, renowned as the Father of Modern China and first provisional president of the Republic of China. 858 Front St., Lahaina, www.lahainarestoration.org

The largest aquarium in Hawai‘i, this indoor/outdoor marine park at Mā‘alaea Harbor boasts more than 60 exhibits dedicated to the conservation of the Islands’ indigenous sea life. The Center’s new Humpbacks of Hawai‘i Exhibit & Sphere breaks the barrier to do what has never been done before: bring guests eye-to-eye with Maui’s humpback whales in their realm beneath the waves. As the first-of-its-kind in Hawai‘i, the Sphere marks a new era in the confluence of technology and marine observation. The new experience will allow guests to connect with humpbacks in their world through the integration of 4k imagery, 3D active glasses and a 7.1 surround sound system. Open daily between 10am and 4pm. Showings run every half hour. 192 Mā‘alaea Road, Wailuku, 808.270.7000, www.mauioceancenter.com 12
