FROM THE EDITOR

“Art is everywhere, and everywhere is art.” B R A N D O N B OY D

W

hether it’s looking at a favorite painting at the St. Louis Art Museum or receiving a hand-painted card from a friend, we all have felt the emotional power of art. It affects our lives in

ways both subtle and obvious, expected, and unexpected. Drawn to the detail, texture, and ambiance of the 21c Museum Hotel, we were instantly inspired. The design elements created the perfect backdrop for this issue. Working with team of Rae Marcel, Lisa Molitor and Joyce Bogan, we built a bold and beautiful palette filled with bright and rich tones, art written all over it! Just like art, wedding inspiration can come from anywhere. When starting your planning journey, it’s important to let go of any preconceived notions about what a wedding “should be.” Forget what you’ve seen other weddings or what your friends say you MUST do. Your highest priority should be to create a day that makes you feel comfortable, present in the moment, and has thoughtful touches at every turn. It’s those little and meaningful details that make your wedding unique. Look for them in your everyday life and think about how to include them in your celebration. Honestly, it's the difference between A wedding and YOUR wedding, the seemingly little details that when quietly woven into your day, tie together to create a special feeling or ambience unique to only the two of you. It's always my hope to inspire you to create a perfectly unique wedding, After all, the music will fade, the guests will go home, and you’ll be left standing with your new spouse. Remember what makes that day the most special and start there.

Things We Love!

T H E S TAT E M E N T V E I L The soft, billowy beauty of a veil can completely transform your bridal look with its movement and drape. And while we love minimalist and traditional veils, an embellished wedding veil adorned with lace, crystals or pearls can feel fresh and infinitely romantic. Like the impact that statement jewelry makes, a statement veil does the same thing. The design possibilities are endless. From veils that are dripped in feathers, or soft organza blooms, to veils dotted with soft ivory pearls and dazzling crystals, embellishments add texture and detail to an otherwise blank canvas. With lengths and styles customizable, your veil can beautifully complement your body shape and dress and capture your personality. 36

FOR THE GROOM The bride isn’t the only one who gets to steal the show! It’s his special day, too, so add something sentimental that will make a huge impact. Whether it’s infusing your personality into an accessory, such as your cufflinks or socks, or going all out with a completely custom suit, the choice is yours. On page 68, we love how Melissa + Adam created a custom suit jacket that incorporated the incredible watercolor art of the Trevi Fountain done by Kate Rademeyer at Love Letter Paper Co.into the lining. 38

They can work in tandem with your photographer, snapping BTS candid’s you’ll have access to immediately, or they can manage your social profiles while you’re preoccupied with other things. (Like, you know, getting married.) “The photos and videos that I gather are the intimate, behind-the-scenes moments,” explains wedding content creator Leshay Mathis-Reed of HypeQueen Media. “Photographers and videographers are capturing all of the formal images, and you’re going to get a defined package of assets. But some of the best moments are the things that you can’t predict, which are going to be happening organically, that I’m focused on capturing.”

Melissa + Adam met through a game of golf. As soon as they took a tour of Old Warson Country Club and saw the golf course as the backdrop of what would be their ceremony location, they knew it was where they wanted to get married. Their place card display, based on The Masters Leaderboard was just one nod to their golfing history. See the rest of their wedding on page 68. From a first look with the sea lions on page 102 to a sweet favor for their guests, Chelsea + Justin fully embraced the “animals always” theme and incorporated many of the elements into their celebration at the St. Louis Zoo living world. 42

I remember sitting on the bus waiting for the ceremony to start and my heart was racing because I could see Cam, but he couldn't see me. It was so exciting; I just couldn't wait to marry him!” When Cam and I walked into the Grand Hall for the first time, I almost fell over, the space was so beautiful! Ashlee, Sam, Tina, and our entire team was flawless in their execution of the vision. It was just the best day ever and we wish we could do it over again.”

There were so many great moments! Seeing each other for the first time at the altar. Our wedding ceremony was perfect. Our engagement at the Trevi Fountain in Rome was such a special moment for us and we thought it would be amazing to bring little pieces of Italy to the wedding. It began with our invitation and the incredible watercolor art by Kate Rademeyer at Love Letter Paper Co. We carried the design through the wedding and reception, including the art on our ‘alfresco’ bar at cocktail hour that served Italian inspired cocktails. Our Trevi Fountain art was even included on the lining of Adam’s custom suit jacket.”

Right after the ceremony, we walked to the bridal suite and freshened up for more photos. While there, we took selfies on about a dozen phones we found haphazardly lying about, leaving a special photo for our loved ones and guests to find later from us! It was just a little thing we did together away from the bustle of the crowds, but it was something a bit unique that added to the fun of the whole day. It was one way that we tried to live in the moment and not get caught up in the busy nature of the wedding!”

I was able to surprise David during our vows with a letter I wrote myself on the trip we met on when we were 16. We met on a 4-week trip traveling through Israel. July 21st, 2010 (two weeks into our Israel trip) ‘I met a boy! David Tauber. I came here not expecting to meet anyone, and I could only dream of meeting this perfect guy that likes me for me. Everything is falling right into place. I am so extremely happy and lucky. This boy is seriously perfect and makes me feel so good about myself. It scares me how much I could possibly like him. So Israel + a boy = the time of my life and more. I couldn’t ask for anything better.’ I could have never imagined that a silly note I wrote myself when I was 16 could lead to us to today.”

A few memorable moments and one piece of advice; taking dance lessons to learn the ‘Time of My Life’ dance from Dirty Dancing was so fun, that we continued taking lessons after our wedding, and the dueling pianos as our music provided a high level of engagement and kept the dancing going all night. Booking full wedding planning vs. ‘day of’ was 100% worth it! Our planner was amazing, she had great vendor suggestions. Wendy’s website helped us stay on track, plus it took SO much of the stress out of it.”

We lost everything in a house fire two days before our wedding. We were lucky we all made it out alive and unharmed. All thanks to a stranger, driving through sleet, who saw the flames and banged on our door essentially saving our lives. There was a terrible sleet and snowstorm the day before our wedding which really affected travel for all our guests, many of whom were unable to make it. When I walked down the aisle of the Cathedral to my husband-to-be. He does not often show emotion outwardly, and to see the tears of joy and pure happiness on his face as I came towards him was such a beautiful display of emotion. My father and I danced to Butterfly Kisses, which has been our song since I was little. Growing from dancing to that song in our family room whilst standing on his feet to dancing to that song at my wedding was such a full-circle moment. Finally, getting to perform with my teammates! I was a part of the St. Louis Blues Blue Crew for 6 years. At the reception, we got all of the girls together to do a performance together. My mom is my rock; she means everything to me. I wanted to find a way to thank her. I had my own first look with her, she walked me down the aisle with my dad, and added a motherdaughter dance. One of my favorite moments was my first look with my mom. I will forever cherish seeing her face light up and tears form in her eyes.” One aspect we knew we wanted from the very start was to have a choreographed first dance. We wanted to make it special for us and exciting for the audience rather than watching two people swaying. We spent weeks choreographing and practicing our dance; enjoying many late evenings drinking wine and dancing in our living room. When it was showtime at the reception the nerves were high, but once we got started, everything else faded away. ZACH DALIN “With wedding photography, I think of creating artistic pieces that my clients want to use as art,” said photographer Zach Dalin. “These are not just digital photos on your iPhone, but something that can be displayed as art on the walls of your home.” Dalin has been photographing weddings and other special events for over a decade and brings a background in art and design to his images. He creates heirloom-quality pieces the wedding couple will have in their family for generations to come. In one photo on his website, Dalin captured a bride and groom in their wedding clothes standing in front of red clay rock outcroppings, backed by a brilliant blue sky fi lled with puffy clouds and a starry sun. In another shot, a barefoot bride is captured hopping a train, her long wedding train billowing behind her, bringing to mind the famous photo of Marilyn Monroe trying to contain her blowing dress over a street grate. Dalin describes his style as cinematic and dramatic. “I create a kind of movie poster for our clients - that final piece that grabs your attention.” Dalin offers fi nished products that can include a metal print or an acrylic block. He uses what he calls an “edge system” with premium materials that edge out the photos with wood or bamboo frames.

T H E A R T O F Wedding Photography V E RO N I CA YO U N G Veronica Young, a St. Louis photographer who works with her husband Alex on both photography and wedding fi lms, says modern weddings are all about the bride and groom and their personal style. “Our approach is timeless but modern,” Young said. “Most clients come to us because of our style. We approach our job by looking at how they designed their wedding. They put a lot of thought into the design, feel, and vibe, and we want to catch that authentically. If they have a dark room lit with candles, for example, we won’t use a lot of fl ashes.” In her work with couples, Young spends time with her clients, getting to know them well enough to personalize the photography for them. For one of her most memorable weddings, the bride was hearing impaired, and the groom learned sign language for the ceremony so he could sign his vows for her. Young captured the emotion and surprise of that moment in both photos and a video, which can be viewed on her Instagram profi le. In one example of her work, the bride and a bridesmaid are photographed jumping for joy on a bed. The photo is in black and white and depicts the playful glee on the women’s faces. In another photo, a groom in full military uniform is pictured fastening his cuffl inks. Young provides an online gallery and edits each image. She and her husband Alex also produce short fi lms for couples of special moments during the wedding. Her goal is to produce images that will look modern and fresh 100 years in the future.

T H E A R T O F Wedding Photography MICHELLE JAHNS “My fi rst wedding in St. Louis Bride featured dinosaurs,” said photographer Michelle Jahns. “Dinosaurs in bouquets, as a cake topper, in hair clips. It was done so elegantly that you wouldn’t know it was a dinosaur-themed event unless you looked for it. And for the engagement photos, I had them running through Kiener Plaza, like they were being chased, and I Photoshopped dinosaurs into it.” Jahns says her photography is modern with a classic look, but also fun, with a little bit of crazy rebel thrown into the mix. Her clients enjoy the outrageous and non-traditional “the crazier the better.” She still loves the traditional look but tends to produce images that are creative and pull at the heartstrings. She describes her style as real life, with true color. She doesn’t usually go dark or moody. Her images tend to be colorful and vibrant but not overly saturated. Jahns also offers to couples her extensive wedding and event experience with other vendors, which she calls her “Wedding Wing Woman” service. Creating a wedding from scratch can be overwhelming, so she coaches clients through planning and serves as a sounding board. Jains offers an online gallery that is shareable and downloadable. She produces heirloom, professional products and works with the couple to create an album that can be passed down to the next generations.

T H E A R T O F Wedding Photography A B B I E TA K E S P I C T U R E S Photographer Abbie Rudolph says the art of wedding photography is in the details. A lot of behind-the-scenes planning goes into a wedding, and they are always on a tight schedule. The photographer is the time keeper. “You can’t have relaxed beautiful imagery if the wedding couple is anxious because they are running the whole day,” Rudolph said. “I can’t get authentic photos of my couples if they are worried about logistics and timeline. That’s the art of it - having a solid structure and a hold on the day, and having the trust of the bridal couple. We are by their sides all day long.” Rudolph describes her style as colorful and creative. Her images attempt to tell the couple’s story. If they are quiet and reserved, she doesn’t put them in a loud or crazy setting. She tries to learn their chemistry. “I want their friends and family to see the photos of the wedding couple and say, yes, that’s them!” Rudolph said. “Capturing their uniqueness while keeping my signature style is key.” To do that, she uses the engagement photo session as an opportunity to get to know the wedding couple and to do a little coaching. She gets them comfortable by showing them how to pose, what to do with their hands, and helping them to be comfortable in front of the camera. She says that process sets them up to create “really amazing photos.” Rudolph travels coast to coast to shoot weddings and has photographed about 337 weddings so far. She provides full-day coverage, a full set of high resolution digital fi les, and a complimentary set of social media imagery.

T H E A R T O F Wedding Photography K E L LY P A R K P H O T O G R A P H Y When you look at Kelly Park’s wedding photography, you’re at once struck by the sweet, loving tone she captures with her couples and their families. Her photos are generational when possible, with parents and grandparents included, which adds an emotional memory that couples will treasure for years. “My goal is to capture the love story of my bride and groom beautifully,” Park said. “I want them to look back at their photos with a smile, as they remember all the sweet moments and excitement of their day and why they are celebrating 50+ years later.” Park got her start in photography with children but moved to wedding photography because of the excitement and happiness of the day. Her style reflects this approach as well. She appreciates moody photography, but it’s not really her thing. Instead she captures the sweet moments that a couple and their family will treasure for years. “Grandparents are important,” she said. “I try to get the parents of the couple together. They are part of the milestone - grandparents too, if they can be there.” Park believes the art of wedding photography is about the story. Everybody has one. How did the couple meet? How did they know? How did the proposal go? She tries to get to know the couple before the wedding day so she can capture them and their story. For one bride who had recently lost her father, this included close-up photos of her bouquet of orchids because orchids were the flower her father had always given her. As a special nod to her couples, each year on their anniversary, she posts a tribute to them on her Facebook page.

here are so many ways to make a major statement on your wedding day, and one of our favorite details to go all out on is the wedding cake.

Think of your wedding cake as another key element to your decor; another chance to create a

Describe the meal you created. I requested simplicity and Chef Phil Stemmler created the dish. The meal is a bed of garlic mashed potatoes, lemon pepper asparagus, and a fi let with a demi-glace, basil oil drizzle and topped with microgreens. What was your inspiration for this meal? My inspiration was elevated comfort food. How did it evolve from an idea to reality? We focus on where the rubber hits the road. We want a meal that is well presented and delicious across a wide range of palates. What advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding dream meal? This party is for you so go with what you like. If you like steak, serve steak. If you want a taco bar, go for it. Celebrate your preferences. What are some factors couples should consider? Trust your heart. What pitfalls should couples avoid? I tell couples to avoid getting too complicated and avoid too many courses. Also, rely on an expert to guide you through the day. It’s already a whirlwind and you don’t need to add more to your day. Put yourself in the hands of the experts. Any tasting tips for couples? Venture outside of your comfort zone. For example, if you are tasting four appetizers pick three you know you want to serve and one that is something you haven’t tried before.

There were also custom hats for purchase from Hawthorn Hat Co., another local womanowned business. “Men and women alike wore glitter and had their hair braided,” Gold said. “Everyone looked fantastic. It was truly unlike anything we’ve ever seen.” Gold said Ashley Clay, owner of Bella Noir Event Design, was incredible to work with. Steph and Josh made clear there was to be no muted fall pallete for this October wedding-all bright colors, please! “Our vision was wild but she made it come to life in the most beautiful way,” said Gold. “Ashley went over and above to make sure everything surpassed how we had envisioned it and the decor was truly unbelievable. The couple’s nine-year-old nephew Ryland is very special to them and spends lots of time with them. Ryland told Steph and Josh that he wanted to be the one to marry them, and after arriving to the stage by bicycle, he performed the duties perfectly. (Steph’s newly-ordained godson Jason backed up Ryland with the rest of the official business of getting married). The couple also wrote personal notes to each guest, sharing how much they each mean to them and thanking them for being there to share their weekend. “Some people were pretty emotional after reading their notes. Talking with family and friends about their notes gave us a chance to really connect with people individually,” Gold said. The guests were given a somewhat vague 164
