Seniors Festival 2024

Page 1

Event guide 1-31 October

Mornington Peninsula Shire acknowledges the Bunurong people, who have been the custodians of this land for many thousands of years; and pays respect to their Elders past and present.

We acknowledge that the beautiful land on which we meet is the place of age-old ceremonies, celebrations, initiation, and renewal; and that the Bunurong people’s living culture continues to have a unique role in the life of this region.

The Victorian Seniors Festival is committed to celebrating the experience and knowledge that

all older people bring to the community.

This year, the Seniors Festival has a dedicated focus on supporting events that are inclusive and safe for everyone.

The Shire acknowledges that older people are not one homogeneous group. They represent identities that intersect i.e., cultural identity, age, sexuality, partnered or unpartnered, socio-economic status, gender, ability, etc.

Our Seniors Festival celebrates the multifaceted nature of older people who live, work and play in our region.

Welcome to a month of free and low cost activities across the Peninsula and Victoria.

Mornington Peninsula Shire, in collaboration with local community groups and organisations, offers newcomers, visitors, and longterm residents a range of events to choose from.

You are invited to join in the fun and explore new activities, friendships, and places.

This is all about celebrating ageing and helping to debunk the stereotypes and myths about growing older. It’s also a chance to say thank you for the major contribution older people make to our local communities.

We wish to thank all the individuals and organisations who have contributed to this year’s festival.

This booklet lists events and activities provided by community groups, organisations and the Shire. Bookings open on 17 September at 10am and are essential unless otherwise specified. For Victorian events: seniorsonline.vic.gov.au/festival

Post your festival photos with the hashtags: #MornPenSeniorsFestival and #VicSeniorsFestival

How to Thrive

(Short film and Q&A)

Film viewing, followed by a Q&A with Marie McLeod

Is there a secret formula to happiness? We all struggle sometimes, but what does it mean when we struggle?

We all experience strong emotions, but what should we do about them? We all want to be happy – but what is happiness and why is it so elusive?

Positive psychotherapist

Marie McLeod takes on a group of volunteers with mental health issues and offers them interventions grounded in positive psychology, neuroscience and wellbeing science.

The film’s premise is; if we offer the science of happiness to people experiencing struggle; what difference would it make?

Is happiness a learnable skill and can we teach people skills to live happier, healthier and more meaningful lives?

With unprecedented access; the result is an intimate, heartfelt and hopeful film that offers a rare glimpse into the lives of seven people who make incredible transforms as a result of learning ‘How to Thrive?’

Ageing well on the Mornington Peninsula

Together striving to age well and support community to be healthy and connected. In addition to Seniors Festival the Mornington Peninsula Shire provides a range of initiatives, including:

• Positive Ageing Newsletter

• Promoting senior rights and elder abuse awareness

• Peninsula Advisory Committee for Elders

• Supporting social participation including local senior clubs and groups

• Intergenerational opportunities in partnership with Youth Services and Libraries

For more information or to contact the Positive Ageing Team: 1300 850 600 positiveageing@mornpen.vic.gov.au

Access the Positive Ageing Newsletter online: mornpen.vic.gov.au/positiveageingnewsletter

The Shire recognises, values and celebrates diversity and inclusion. This means that we want everyone who lives here or visit to know that they are welcome, valued, supported and safe here. That all Shire services, facilities, open spaces and programs (including Positive Ageing activities) are accessible to and respectful of all.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and the Rainbow/Pride flag represent communities that experience inequality and oppression today.

The displaying of these flags on Shire publications and on the Shire flagpoles is a simple visual signifier that the Shire is an inclusive and safe space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the LGBTIQA+ communities.
