Moon Valley's Halloween Extravaganza: Building Community Spirit, One Spooky Display at a Time DREW HUTCHINSON, PRESIDENT, MOON VALLEY NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION

We, the residents of Moon Valley, are renowned for our annual Christmas lights competition. Now, it seems we may be on the brink of embracing a new tradition. In recent years, Moon Valley's enthusiasm for Halloween decorations has grown, and the community buzz suggests that Halloween awards might soon become a reality. Let's delve into how this grassroots movement is fostering community spirit and strengthening our neighborhood bonds, one spooky display at a time. As the warmth of summer yields to the chill of autumn, something enchanting occurs in Moon Valley. Our neighborhood, known for its charming homes and friendly residents, undergoes a remarkable transformation as October begins. The Halloween spirit descends upon Moon Valley, and residents begin to give their homes a spooky makeover. It appears that the entire community has been swept up in the magic of Halloween. What began as a few spirited displays has evolved into a neighborhood-wide phenomenon. In a place where residents are celebrated for their festive Christmas light displays, it was only natural for them to approach Halloween with equal enthusiasm. Once-tranquil Moon Valley now comes alive with the glow of jacko'-lanterns, eerie lighting, larger-than-life skeletons, and the anticipation that the holidays are just around the corner. The excitement and creativity have reached such heights that many residents have been inquiring with the Moon Valley Neighborhood Association about the possibility of Halloween awards. The association has taken note of this popular demand and is actively considering the introduction of Halloween awards to recognize the efforts and creativity of our residents. What makes this movement even more special is that it's entirely grassroots, driven by the passion of Moon Valley residents eager to showcase their creativity and share in the Halloween spirit with their neighbors. In a world that sometimes feels increasingly disconnected, this renewed enthusiasm for community bonding is a welcome change. The Moon Valley Neighborhood Association sees the potential for these Halloween awards to strengthen the bonds among neighbors and foster a greater

sense of togetherness. It's not just about competition; it's about coming together, sharing ideas, and celebrating the spirit of the season as a community. While the official announcement of Halloween awards has yet to be made, the excitement for the holidays in Moon Valley is well underway. Residents are already collaborating, exchanging ideas, and assisting one another in creating impressive and imaginative displays that will bring delight to all who visit our neighborhood in the coming months. As we eagerly await updates on the potential Halloween awards, one thing is certain: Moon Valley's Halloween enthusiasm is here to stay. Moon Valley is proving that, with the support and enthusiasm of its residents, it can embrace new traditions that bring neighbors closer together. Whether Halloween awards become a reality or not, the sense of community that has blossomed in Moon Valley is something we can all take pride in. As Halloween approaches, stay tuned for the latest news from the Moon Valley Neighborhood Association at www.moonvalley.org. If the demand and community support continue to grow, we might just find ourselves celebrating Halloween in a whole new way in the coming years. In Moon Valley, it's clear that when the community speaks, magical things can happen. Stay tuned for updates from the Moon Valley Neighborhood Association as we explore the possibility of introducing Halloween awards to celebrate our residents' creativity and the spirit of Halloween in our community. TRAPPED IN MOON VALLEY

LET TER FROM THE EDITOR

A nip in the air and the leaves are changing colors can only mean one thing, Fall is around the corner. It’s time to open the windows, pull out the sweaters and boots, dust off the patio furniture and get outdoors. For me I also think it’s time to start the many art projects that continue to pile up in the garage and closets. All of those sale items you purchased last year in hopes of creating a lovely fall wreath, a Christmas gift, or just create an artist’s masterpiece that you’ve pinned on Pinterest. (For those of you that have never ventured on Pinterest….. beware, it is very addicting, but such a wonderful way to learn, play and get lost in time!!) My mother taught me many things and crafting and creating is one that I only wish I had more time to do. There is just something inspiring about glue guns, duck tape, florist tape, and an electric stapler gun to set forth and conquer your decorator itch. I hope to get something completed by Christmas!!! Regardless, look around and notice the clever Halloween masterpieces that are showing up in the neighborhood, the beautiful mums setting on front patio’s , the smell of cinnamon and apples simmering, and the great new pumpkins brews available.

Fall is still the best time of year. awn Trapp D

Not all trusts are created equal BY LIBBY BANK S, PLLC, THE L AW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANK S A friend recently told me a story about a woman she knew who created a revocable living trust with a financial institution that offered steep discounts. She met with an attorney for less than 15 minutes and signed her trust documents with a high-pressure salesman who spent hours trying to get her to buy an annuity. This is just one of the problems that can arise with companies offering cut-rate deals on a trust plan. But what about the other problems? If your trust plan isn’t put together properly, it won’t provide the support for you and your family when the time comes to use it. Here are a few questions your trust should answer. Who should handle my affairs if I become incapacitated? How do I want that person to handle my affairs? Both a Will and a Trust contain instructions for distributing your assets after you die. However, a Trust also contains your instructions for managing your assets if you become incapacitated. The Trust allows a successor you have chosen to step into your shoes to pay your bills, manage your assets, sell property if needed, and generally handle your financial affairs. The Trust makes it easy for your selected individual to assist when you need help. Done properly, the Trust makes it clear when your appointed representative will be stepping in for you, and what they must show a financial institution or others to act on your behalf. However, the discount trusts and powers of attorney I often review are totally unclear. Recently, I assisted with a case in which the trust failed to appoint a trustee for incapacity. The original grantor could no longer handle their affairs and required someone to step in. Since no one was listed in the trust, we ended up with expensive court proceedings to get a trustee in place. In the meantime, the grantor’s bills went unpaid and their finances deteriorated while their family was unable to move forward. The trusts we prepare in our office avoid these issues. Instead of a generic, unclear “one size fits all” trust, we create custom documents tailored to each client’s specific situation. We are clear in what a successor trustee must do to step in for you. On top of that, if all your named trustees are unable to serve, we have a backup plan to get the right trustee in place without having to go to court. A well drafted and well thought out trust has these kinds of fail-safe provisions. Often, a trust created by the person trying to sell you an annuity simply won’t contain these crucial provisions. If I have a Trust, will my family avoid probate court after my passing? A properly formed and funded Trust can hold your assets and avoid the need for probate and the public disclosure of your assets on your death. With a Trust, the person you appoint to wrap up your estate can do so quickly and privately. They can gather, sell, and distribute your assets to beneficiaries with no court involvement. To accomplish this goal, the Trust first needs to put forward the proper plan for you. I once reviewed an annuity company trust that did not even contain beneficiaries. Not a single person was named to receive the person’s assets. A beneficiary was not even listed in an attachment to the Trust (and an attachment is also a bad idea). The Trust fails in this instance – it is not a valid Trust without beneficiaries. Thankfully, this person brought their trust to us to review, and we were able to help them set up a proper plan. A Trust that is tailored to you will not only name your beneficiaries but consider their individual situations. Is a beneficiary of yours someone who is receiving important government benefits? The Trust can hold their share in a special needs trust. Do you have a beneficiary with past drug or alcohol issues that still worry you? We can include substance abuse provisions that allow the trustee to monitor the beneficiary’s situation and withhold funds or use them to assist the beneficiary with getting help. Do you have a blended family where you want to include your spouse and still have your separate children inherit later? We can do that, but it takes discussion and planning, and an estate planning attorney is the most qualified option to ensure your wishes are fulfilled with your Trust. 6 OctobER 2023 | info@mvtattler.com

Prior Planning THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON

BY MEREDITH ARENDS

Boy did I screw up. I switched insurance agents, a few years ago, and now all my policies renew at the end of September. I don’t have impound accounts so it is a little cheaper to pay my HOI policies on an annual basis. My agent told me that my auto policies are also less expensive if I don’t pay monthly. The Umbrella policy, that used to cost next to nothing, must have sprung a leak, because it “ain’t” cheap either. And, who knows what these would cost if they weren’t “bundled.” Guess what else comes due in this time period? Property tax! Again, I don’t have impound accounts, so I have to pony up to Maricopa and Coconino counties in early October. I knew this, but the year-end compounding effect never occurred to me. Oh, and BTW, I just paid my quarterlies to the IRS a few weeks ago. Our HOA in Munds Park just voted on a big special assessment, which is due in October, even though we just had a smaller one in June. (For the record, I’m on the Board, so I guess that I’m responsible for shooting myself in the foot). To top it all off, we are redoing our kitchen in Munds. The idea was that we would get it done before the start of the season, but there was so much snow that we couldn’t get into our place until late May – early June. Then the grandkids were up, and that was not the time to tear our kitchen apart. Finally, we got started and I just paid for new cabinets, appliances, counter tops, can lights, and installation. I did the demolition myself, so I was able to save a few hundred dollars. Good thing I’m handy. I got the bright idea to throw my insurance agent to the wolves and switch to a cheaper company. Saving money was my goal! It’s due right now; a perfect time to switch. Gronk makes a pretty compelling argument for USAA. I qualify. I spent six grand and glorious years with the Arizona National Guard. I called the 800 number and spent the next two hours getting quotes from three different departments. The auto insurance was quite a bit less expensive, but I had to bundle all the coverages to get the cheap auto rate. Altogether, I could save a few bucks, but not enough to totally “tick-off” my insurance agent, who is also a personal friend. What can you take away from this? It’s okay to search around, but make sure you are getting an actual benefit and just not making a change for “change’s sake.” Also, it may be sage to set down with a calendar when making strategic monetary decisions. You know – “prior planning PPPP.” Do me a favor, please. If you see an old guy with a white mustache, standing on the street corner, begging, with a sign around his neck that says “Will Do Mortgages for Food.” Please have pity on me.

As a Moon Valley resident, you may have heard of National Charity League (NCL). NCL is a non-profit mother/daughter organization that helps young women grow into powerful leaders, while still giving back to their community. Part of the National Charity League experience is volunteering at different philanthropies around the community. One of these philanthropies includes The Joy Bus Diner. The Joy Bus is a non-profit diner and organization that focuses on supplying healthy and fresh meals to individuals with cancer. It was founded in 2011 by award winning chef, Jennifer Caraway, in honor of her friend, Joy, who struggled with Ovarian Cancer. The Joy Bus is not only a diner and a philanthropy, but also a community that provides several different volunteering opportunities to help people and families in need. The mothers and daughters of NCL have been frequent volunteers at the Joy Bus for many years helping in any way they can to help families going through a very difficult time. This includes delivering healthy meals to people who are housebound due to their cancer treatments, working as hostesses and also helping with all aspects of serving people in the diner. The girls and moms may be pouring drinks, folding silverware, or making fresh squeezed orange juice on any given day when volunteering at the diner. One NCL ticktocker, Julia Gray, has said, “Everyone at the Joy Bus is so bright and positive…the minute you step through the door you just feel at home. My personal favorite part of volunteering there is getting to help make orange juice.”. Julia is a senior this year, and has volunteered at the Joy Bus several times since her first year with NCL. Furthermore, NCL is honored to have the Joy Bus Diner as a philanthropy, and for all their kindness. Volunteering at the Joy Bus has helped teach the NCL girls leadership and teamwork skills. If you ever want a good, healthy meal, and a positive environment, pop down to the Joy Bus Diner at 3375 E. the gift of time

M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B IE ER BS TO E SSER

Our friends Heidi and David used the phrase Gift of Time to mean repeating Kindergarten, so their kids would be older socially and emotionally which, as an educator I think can be wise. However, I am using it here for the time we’ve given our ‘boys’ to live at home after college (already gainfully employed) to save money on living expenses. That ‘gift’ meant for them, turned out to be a gift to us. Each time we didn’t even realize it. The connection we had was intensified. The love deepened. Acceptance and realization were gained. When our middle son, Joel, lived with us after college I pointed out that we’d never had him all to ourselves. We already had his older brother when he came along and once Jon left, we still had the youngest son Jaden living here. Joel stopped the dishes he was washing, looked up and said, “I never realized that!” Now its Jaden’s turn to live here and the sounds of ….Near, near, near get bounced around the house. Imagine the word ‘near’ extended like ‘neeee…er’ you’ll be close to the sound of this nonsensical, silliness my husband and youngest make when talking to each other. I pondered this for some time. Jon and Joel who are 16 months apart used to have their own language as toddlers, and now my very adult son and husband do the same. I don’t know where it came from. They’re like two peas in a pod; a couple of goofy, weirdos. When Jaden moves out, I will so miss this nonsensical language they share. It makes me giggle every time I hear it. Debbie is a long time Moon Valley resident, married to her High School friend, Gary, the mother of 3 adult boys/men and a Gifted Specialist in the Deer Valley School District.

Sertich, BARRIER FREE SHOWERS ByKirkTomDevelopment Company

I have discussed barrier free showers before and feel it is important to revisit this subject. As we get older or have physical limitations it is important to be able to get in and out of the shower with less chance of injury. Most showers can be turned into a barrier free shower. The demand and need for barrier free showers has increased dramatically. Everyone can benefit from a barrier free shower. Baby boomers have realized that in order to remain in their homes, certain changes must be made to accommodate aging in place. These types of showers are only limited to space and budget. While smaller areas can be turned into curb less shower, a larger space makes for easier movement and accessibility for a wheelchair when assistance is necessary. It is recommended that an aging in place specialist help you redesign your new barrier free shower. There are special concerns when designing any curb less shower. Design must take into account moisture control, floor construction so the water slopes to the drain while maintaining the barrier free design, shower head and water control placement, benches and grab bars. Floor materials must also be addressed to avoid any slips and falls. As part of aging in place we need to make sure a person can enjoy their later years by remaining in their home. In order to maintain our personal independence we need to design our shower to work for everyone at any stage of life. Kirk Development has aging in place specialists that can design your bathroom or shower to accommodate your special needs. Call 602 944-3658 to schedule an appointment for a free estimate.

Shadow Rock UCC’s Golden Celebration Art Show Opening & Sale

Shadow Rock United Church of Christ has from the very beginning affirmed the goodness of life and celebrated the creative human spirit. Art, beauty, and a comprehensive view of life is a crucial part of who we are. In this spirit, we celebrate our 50th Anniversary with a Golden Celebration of Community Art Show & Sale. This art show will feature artists from the Southwest, many of whom share a connection with Shadow Rock UCC and the Moon Valley area. This is a great opportunity to share some of the best of who we are with the community we are called to love and serve. The Art Show Team recommends that all of us invite four people to this event. In addition to the grand opening on Nov. 18th, 3- 6 PM, we will have the additional days and times for viewing on Nov. 19th, Nov. 26th, and Dec. 3, 12-3 PM. Bring a friend, go to lunch, appreciate art, and be in good company. There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people. ~ Vincent Van Gogh

Just Ask Julie BY J U LI E PEK Tattler reader Paula asked: “What are your thoughts on having home air vents cleaned? We recently had our vents serviced but are questioning the results.” According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the research is in its early stages, and they offer no blanket recommendation. Their studies show that duct cleaning does not prevent health problems, nor do dirty ducts increase health risks. This is because dust adheres to the duct surfaces and does not necessarily enter the living space. Other pollutants that enter the home from outdoor activity, cooking, smoking or just moving around in your home can cause greater exposure to contaminants. You may consider having your ducts cleaned if you have any of the following in your home: visible mold caused by ducts or insulation getting wet; vermin living in your ducts; excessive dust or debris on your registers. The EPA recommends that ducts be cleaned on an as needed basis. If you have a fuelbased furnace, stove or fireplace, they should be checked for proper functioning and serviced once a year with the change of seasons. Keeping coils, dirty fans, and heat exchangers clean ensures better functionality of the system, but there is no evidence that simply cleaning ducts will improve efficiency. Do your research if you hire a professional to service your system. Check the EPA’s resources as well. Commit to a regular program of maintenance and changing out air filters. Member Spotlight: Mary Henigar

Mary was born in Phoenix, but as a US Air Force “brat”, she grew up all over the world. Her school years were spent in Tripoli, Libya; Labrador, Newfoundland; and Key West, Florida. Upon graduation from high school in Key West, Mary’s family returned to Phoenix. She enrolled in Grand Canyon College (now University) and worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor for the City of Phoenix. One evening during her college years, she went to a party in Tempe where she met her future husband, Mike. They married in April 1969 and began their life together in Apache Junction. In 1971 they moved to Petaluma, California and spent the next 29 years bouncing back and forth between Colorado and California. Upon Mike’s retirement in 2000, they made their way back “home” to Arizona, and ended up in Moon Valley a few years later. Mary has been an active participant in the Moon Valley Women’s Club since joining in 2006. She is the type of person who will jump in and help wherever needed. In total, she served on the Club’s board for over a decade. After serving 2 years as Vice President, Mary was Club President in the 20142015 program year and again in 2017-2018. The MVWC Service Project is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit arm of Moon Valley Women’s Club. One of the Service Project’s signature programs is the Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC) De Colores Shelter Shoebox Project. Together with her co-chair, Mary Harris, Mary helps coordinate the effort to collect travel-sized toiletries which are sorted and placed into shoe boxes that are given to incoming shelter clients. De Colores Shelter opened its doors in 1986 and serves an average of 500600 clients a year recovering from abuse and ready to start a life free of violence. Last year, thanks to the efforts of Mary and Mary, the Moon Valley Women’s Club assembled 76 shoe boxes and several large bags full of toiletries for De Colores and is currently working towards doing that again this year. If you have travel size toiletries that you would like to donate to this project, please contact us at mvwcserviceproject@gmail.com | For information on joining the Moon Valley Women’s Club, please visit our website at mvwomensclub.org/

THE CITY OF PHOENIX GUARDS PARKS AT NIGHT By Frosty Kroening

Deb Stark, City Councilperson, began the meeting by telling the group about two new council members and the new Black Mountain Police Precinct Commander. He was not present, but he asked her what contacts he should be making in the precinct. So, we can expect to have close communication with him, as with past Commanders. He wants to hear from us. Ms. Stark also pointed out that the new street maintenance crew is cleaning up roads and roadsides. People agreed that our roadsides do look cleaner. She noted that a volunteer is needed for the Block Watch Oversight Committee. An attendee asked about how the police are monitoring local militia groups. Ms. Stark took the question into advisement. Lt. Ben Sywarungsymun presented updates on crime statistics in our precinct. Hundreds of thousands of illegal drugs and multiple guns have been confiscated by the officers in community-based actions. Some Hyundai and Kia vehicles have been returned to their owners. Traffic stops have resulted in many charges. 95.4 mph was the top speed of one offender and one tried to escape. Another topic was that multiple agencies are cooperating to arrest leaders of retail stolen goods crimes. This will be a major project going forward. In breakout rooms we talked about how the Office of Homeless Solutions is coordinating with police to help homeless people. And we were told that local churches are providing many essential services to the homeless. Marty Whitfield, Assistant Director, Night Security, Parks and Recreation, reported that the City of Phoenix has hired new staff to monitor many of the 187 flatland parks and preserves in Phoenix at night. This is a pilot program and was begun recently. Staff are unarmed and they work from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m. seven days a week. The challenges they face are unattended vehicles, vandalism, small fires, offleash dogs, broken electric services, camping, alcohol consumption, trespass, and lots of trash being left. (Alcohol and smoking are not allowed in Phoenix parks.) In recent encounters, police were called 23 times. There were three emergencies. Park visitors usually are receptive to having staff present. The goal is for everyone to feel safe and enjoy being outside in beautiful places. Staff can issue criminal citations but they prefer to educate people first. They do enforce trespass regulations and can facilitate orders to stay out of a park for 30 days. Park rangers can be called to help the police off-site when there is an emergency. And, police consider all community members to be part of the larger team to assist in having safe and fun park experiences. Did you know that there is a Code of Conduct for behavior in Phoenix parks? Look on the City of Phoenix website to find this Code.

Discover the Fountain of Youth with Botox!

An important paper1 appeared recently in The Lancet, one of the oldest, most-respected research journals in the world. The paper reviews the findings of the OPAL (OPioids for acute SpinAL pain) trial.2 The study authors looked at the impact of opioids for patients with acute (12 weeks or less) back and/or neck pain. Patients were divided into two groups, one of which received opioids and the other a placebo [an inactive pill]. Patients were unaware whether they were receiving the opioid or the placebo. Both groups also received “guideline-recommended care,” which included things like positive reassurance, advising patients to stay active and avoid bed rest, and “other guideline-recommended treatments.” The primary objective of the study: to determine any differences in pain severity between the two groups. Secondary objectives included potential improvements in disability, recovery time, quality of life, and cost-effectiveness. Results demonstrated that opioids were no more effective at reducing back and neck pain than placebo. In addition, “more people in the opioid group reported opioidrelated adverse events.” The study authors noted: “Opioids should not be recommended for acute non-specific low back pain or neck pain given that we found no significant difference in pain severity compared with placebo.” These results are significant in that the OPAL study is the first randomized, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the efficacy of opioids for acute low back and neck pain. Based on their findings, the authors call for “a change in the frequent use of opioids for these conditions.” Other previously published research papers, as well as thousands upon thousands of satisfied patients, support the effectiveness of chiropractic for both back and neck pain. When combined with the results of the OPAL study, the message is clear: Chiropractic can get results where opioids can’t. References: 1 Jones C, Day RO, Koes BW, et al. What did the skeleton say to the Chiropractor?

ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS

Please send one more proof, thanks

BY J ENA R I TCH IE, M O O N VALLE Y CH IR O PR AC T I C October is National Chiropractic Health Month! It’s an ideal time to treat readers to a casual Q and A on interesting facts about Chiropractic Care. Did you know, the first US Government Chiropractic license was granted in 1913? For more than 110 years Chiropractors have been legally performing expert manual adjustments to properly align the skeletal system and joints to alleviate discomfort and restore your body’s natural self-healing condition. The first documented chiropractic adjustment in 1895 helped Harvey Lillard with improved hearing after DD Palmer experimented with spinal adjustments. One of the most common questions we hear is whether it hurts to receive an adjustment. Correctly performed, chiropractic adjustments are not painful. Most often adjustments relieve pain and discomfort. Another question is, why are there sometimes popping sounds during an adjustment? The sound sometimes heard is not bones cracking, but escaping gas being released that creates the popping sounds. Like cracking knuckles, it’s sometimes loud but generally painless. Chiropractic care is scientifically supported and provides patients with one of the safest forms of all healthcare professions. While there may occasionally be some temporary mild soreness after a session, most patients leave the clinic experiencing improvement. Bones only move the width of a piece of paper! It may seem like your bones move inches at a time, but an adjustment is merely a paper-thin movement performed with a well-honed thrust. Chiropractors act with skill and precision to provide reliable results. It’s important to be consistent! Too often, patients wait to seek chiropractic care when they are in a lot of pain. As with almost every kind of treatment, chiropractic care often requires more than one or two sessions. Improvements may take some time and repetition to experience full benefits and results. Each session brings you a step closer to your well-being. A chiropractors hands are often sensitive enough to feel a strand of human hair in a hundred pages of a phone book. After all, they need to locate where the bones are and be able to physically feel the muscles to identify the different tissues and structures needing attention. A Chiropractic Doctor (DC) receives similar training as a Medical Doctor (MD). A Medical Allopathic doctor’s training focuses on surgical and pharmaceutical areas, while chiropractic physicians receive extensive hands-on training in anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics. Back pain and spinal disc dislocation are some of the main problems that bring people to the chiropractor’s office. Because spinal discs can pose many problems, discs are sometimes believed to be more fragile than bone. Discs really are much stronger than bones. One study cites an experiment where the spine is compressed so hard that the bone explodes before the discs. When a disc becomes dislocated, it becomes weakened due to the surrounding support of the bone no longer being in place. And one more fun tidbit for the Halloween season…. What did the skeleton say to the Chiropractor? You Crack Me Up! Call Moon Valley Chiropractic at 602-298-0292 to schedule your skeletal checkup!

Remember to support your Volunteers Are Treasures for Moon Valley Non-Profit Organizations businesses! by Paula Cullison

The Arizona Women’s Partnership (AZWP), an allvolunteer philanthropic non-profit headquartered in Moon Valley, has benefited greatly from the free services of volunteermatch.org Since our formation in 2002, postings on www.volunteermatch.org has provided AZWP with many wonderful volunteers. As President and Founder of the Arizona Women’s Partnership, I am very grateful for the generous support of so many. To date, we have awarded over $600,000 in grants to 92 small / grass-roots non-profits that assist disadvantaged women and children in Arizona. Collectively, they assist over 250,000 annually. The Arizona Women’s Partnership was again selected as the featured nonprofit at the In Celebration of Women II 2023 – Making HERstory juried art exhibit. I served again as the guest curator. After selecting a seven member jury reflective of the rich cultural diversity in Arizona, I turned my attention to our need for a poster. It was to include 38 thumbnails of the art works selected for the exhibition. Within 48 hours, our posting on volunteermatch. org was answered by Mackenzie Welch, a Michigan State University graduate who was honored as a local rising star. Mackenzie created an awesome poster in an incredibly short turn around time. The artists loved it. Mackenzie’s poster is featured on our video. When you visit http://www.azwp.org click ICW 2023 on

the home page. Mackenzie noted in her message to us: At the organization I work for, Community Choice Credit Union, being charitable is one of our core values. Because of this, volunteering my time is very important to me. When I came across the Arizona Women’s Partnership and discovered their mission statement, I immediately became interested. I admire non-profit organizations, and especially those who empower women. Not only was I able to volunteer my graphic designs skills, but I was also able to assist an organization that is truly making a difference for women. I am honored that I was able to work on such a creative and inspirational event. I am happy to work with Paula in the future any time she needs me!” For the Arizona Women’s Partnership, volunteers have been a critical part of our growth. We are grateful to Mackenzie Welch for her willingness to share her professional expertise to help us. The In Celebration of Women II - 2023 Making HERstory juried art exhibit was at the Herberger Art Gallery, the Shemer Art Center, and is now at the Arizona Capitol Museum 1700 W. Rookie Mom: The Strange-and-Horrifying Career Limbo B Y B R I G H I D CO N S TA B L E

In April, I found myself in a perplexing situation as my company underwent an acquisition. The outcome? I was laid off, along with most of the U.S. team, as operations shifted to offshore support in the Philippines. Around the same time, my husband and I made a pivotal decision. With our baby son, Henry, now eight months old, we saw an opportunity for me to shift my focus to motherhood. This choice proved to be a profound one. I could finally take a step back and fully immerse myself in the joys of motherhood. Henry bid farewell to daycare, and I cherished the chance to build a close bond with him, something I had yearned for since returning to work full-time when he was just six weeks old. With summer vacation approaching for our older child, Brynn, it was the perfect moment to go all in with my kids. By the time July arrived, I was well aware that I needed to dive headfirst into the job search. And so, my journey began. But this time around, things were different. I had a newfound clarity. I KNEW that being a teacher was not my calling anymore. I KNEW that my passion extended beyond writing and editing alone. I KNEW that I didn't want to return to the career paths I had traversed before.

So instead of wading in the scary, here’s my action plan: + First, I’ve been actively participating in a copywriting course by Sarah Turner, who has transitioned into a digital copywriting consultant for Meta. This keeps my skills sharp and up-to-date. + Next, I'm taking a leap into a musical theater course for adults. While I am determined to embrace the future and leave the past behind, I have a deep-rooted passion for drama. I hope this endeavor will not only improve my social skills but also allow me to indulge in my love for Broadway musicals! + Finally, I am committed to showcasing my consistent skills through my freelancing business, Brighid Kathleen Creative. I plan to align myself with brands that genuinely excite me. All in all, I'm confident that I'm on the right path just because I’m moving forward.

Brighid Constable is a Tempe, Arizona native with an RPG-loving husband, a wild daughter in first grade, a forever-smiling baby son, and a rescued cat and dog. When she’s not editing digital media, she is dancing to Sofi Tukker on a road trip up north or falling down the Mindy Kahling television rabbit hole. She has written for Hello Giggles, Scary Mommy, and Phoenix magazine, among others.

I had genuinely relished my previous role in digital marketing, adapting to the ever-evolving landscape of web applications and design. And the best part? I excelled at it. Even more significantly, it genuinely excited me. Google campaigns, UX design, social media trends – it was a reflection of who I am. So, as July unfolded, I began to dabble in various opportunities. But there was another noticeable change: I couldn't pretend anymore. You see, wearing a mask is easy. I could match someone's energy and land a job. Yet, being authentic is an entirely different endeavor. Despite securing interviews, I hadn't fully realized how much I had changed. In my previous role, which was entirely remote, I interviewed and trained my team from a distance. It suited my nature. Looking back, it was December 2021, and the world was slowly emerging from the depths of quarantine. Apart from my family and a handful of friends, I hadn't engaged in much in-person socializing. Needless to say, even though I was securing job opportunities, the inperson interview process was a stark contrast to the persona I had projected online: it was excruciatingly awkward. I could sense the disconnect with the interviewers. Now, I must confess, it has been a journey of rebuilding my self-confidence. Embracing this new realm of digital marketing means confronting my anxiety when it comes to meeting new people. But I'm determined to navigate this unknown and find my place in all the strange-and-scary things yet to come… 16 OctobER 2023 | info@mvtattler.com

Bleeding Gums By AZ Family Dental

Seeing blood while brushing or flossing your teeth can raise concerns. The good news is that infrequent bleeding gums are typically standard and harmless. However, if you notice that your gums bleed nearly every time you brush or floss them, this may be a sign of gum disease. Some people ask is Hydrogen Peroxide good for bleeding gums? Yes, rinsing with hydrogen peroxide helps remove plaque that can contribute to gum bleeding. When you use hydrogen peroxide, swish the solution in your mouth after brushing and avoid swallowing any of it. What illnesses cause bleeding gums? In some cases, bleeding gums can be expected. Maybe you brushed too hard or nicked your gums while flossing. Similarly, neglecting your oral hygiene, like forgetting to brush your teeth twice daily, can lead to gum bleeding. In other instances, bleeding gums allude to a more severe condition that requires treatment from a dentist or oral health professional such as: Gingivitis, periodontal disease, or other rare underlying conditions. Often bleeding gums are a symptom of Gingiviitis, a mild form of gum disease that affects 75% of the population. This condition requires treatment from a dentist, though you might be able to alleviate early gingivitis symptoms with better oral hygiene practices. If you put off seeking treatment for gingivitis you can develop periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease that might require a more invasive treatment to correct. While rare, some underlying conditions that can cause bleeding gums are blood disorders, vitamin deficiencies, hormonal imbalance, leukemia, or other health conditions. Using tobacco products is another factor that can adversely affect your gum health. Smoke and nicotine cause constriction of the blood vessels in your gums, and will lead to unhealthy gum tissue. Being too harsh when cleaning your teeth can lead to irritation, causing bleeding gums. Try being gentle to prevent bleeding gums. Brushing in delicate circles is effective. If you use a hard bristle toothbrush consider switching to s soft bristle toothbrush or an electric toothbrush. If you you any questions or you feel like your gums should be evaluated by a dentist, feel free to contact us at AZ Family Dental. You can call us at 602.922.5969

Community Cares Day A Fun Way to Give Back By Locality homes

In our local communities, there are boys and girls who go to bed hungry every night. For many of these children, the only meals they obtain are through their school’s breakfast or lunch programs. Homeless Engagement Lift Partnership (H.E.L.P.) is intervening to fill these hunger gaps with daily afternoon nutritional snack bags called Helpsnackz. The most effective way to connect with the homeless children and their families is through the schools. H.E.L.P. works with the school districts’ Homeless Liaison to identify which schools, and how many of these students need food support. This program is a stepping stone in assisting the families to break the cycle of homelessness. With over 10,000 bags given out each month, the HelpSnackz Program makes a tangible difference to the children they serve. We can help too, by adding a positive and uplifting message to each and every one of the HelpSnackz Bags.

The Moon Valley Tattler | OctoBER 2023 17

Letters from Your Representative & councilwoman Judy Schwiebert:

Legislative District 2 Representative In case I haven’t met you yet, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Judy Schwiebert, and I’m honored to serve as one of your Legislative District 2 representatives in the Arizona State House. My family and I have called the Moon Valley area home for over 30 years now, and frankly, I never imagined I would be in the state legislature. I was a teacher for 27 years at Greenway and then Cactus High School, a longtime member of Shadow Rock Church where I raised my two now grown sons, a co-founder of Theater Works, and a longtime student at Yoga Pura. What led to my decision to run for the legislature in 2020 was my experience volunteering with 2nd graders after I retired. It was right after the legislature made deep cuts to education around 2009, and I was shocked to learn their wonderful teacher had to work four jobs to make ends meet. Like so many other teachers who’ve left Arizona, she doubled her salary teaching in another state. Despite some increases to public school funding in recent years, Arizona has been in such a deep hole that it still ranks near the bottom of the nation in per pupil funding which is key to determining teacher salaries. We’re at the point where 1 in 3 students across Arizona no longer has a permanent, qualified teacher. That’s a disaster not only for our children and families, but for all of us who want a thriving economy. I thought somebody should do something about that. I didn’t think it would be me, but here we are. This year, working together at the Capitol, I was proud to help ensure some additional one-time funding for our public schools in the state budget. However, much more needs to be done to meaningfully increase teacher salaries and secure our economic future. Of course, I share our community’s concern about the many serious challenges we face in Arizona including the water and affordable housing shortages, as well as the increasing number of people now living in our streets and washes, all issues which demand a strong city-state partnership. What matters to you? I’d very much like to hear from you about your statewide priorities as I prepare for the new legislative session in January. Please email me anytime at jschwiebert@azleg.gov or call me at 602-9263390. I also host regular virtual and in person events. I hope you’ll join me at my next coffee chat on Thursday, November 2 at Serafina Coffee at Coral Gables & 7th Street from 5-6:30 pm. Otherwise, my next monthly virtual Town Hall is on October 26, 2023 at 7 pm. To attend, just sign up for the link at my website www.JudySchwiebert. com where you can also sign up for my monthly e-newsletters filled with information about what’s happening at the State Capitol. Finally, my office can also help you with a state agency, create a State Proclamation recognizing one of the great people or groups in our community on a special day, or set up a State Capitol tour for you or your group. It’s an honor to serve you - and I look forward to hearing from you.

Debra Stark:

District 3 Councilmember

As a longtime resident of Phoenix and Councilwoman representing District 3, I’ve witnessed our city’s growth and development over the years. Phoenix is the place we call home, and it’s up to us to ensure we can make the necessary improvements by investing $500M in our city without raising taxes. Join me in voting YES on Questions 1-4 on November 7th to support the Phoenix General Obligation (GO) Bonds. Ballots will be mailed on October 11th to the City of Phoenix voters. One of the biggest reasons to support these bonds is that they won’t raise our taxes. The GO Bonds are responsible investments in our city’s future. Community members have carefully planned these bonds to address critical needs while keeping our financial well-being in mind. It’s been nearly 20 years since Phoenix last saw an investment like this in 2006. Our city needs repairs and renovations in various crucial areas. As the Chair of the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Planning committee, I can see firsthand the significance of these investments. The GO Bond measures will reduce 911 response times by adding more community safety resources and repairing our streets. Regarding safety and infrastructure, we need to invest wisely, and this bond does just that. These bonds will help keep our communities safe and make sure our city remains accessible and inclusive for all. In District 3, we have several exciting projects, including the construction of Fire Station 7 and improvements to the Mountain View Community Center Sports Complex. These are just some examples of how these bonds will benefit our community. By voting YES on Measures 1-4, you’re contributing to a better quality of life for all Phoenix residents. These GO Bond measures are a commitment to a safer, more resilient, and more prosperous city for years to come. By supporting these measures, you’re taking an active role in shaping the future of our beloved city. Please stand with me and countless others across Phoenix on November 7th and vote YES on Measures 1-4. Together, we can make a positive difference and ensure that Phoenix remains a great place to call home.

Chain Guard! BY LEON TRY ME BIKE SHOP Why does the chain on a bike need a guard? Because your clothes and shoe laces seem to gravitate to the sprocket and chain. Once caught, you usually stop pedaling and fall over. Bikes a hundred years ago had no chain guards. People saw a danger about 70 years ago and sheet metal guards were common. All different shapes and sizes most looking like a hockey stick. Today they are mostly plastic on less money bikes. Two an three sprockets up front canceled out the use so the derailer would work. To guard or not to guard you decide, one less thing to break or rub. Sounds like a guarded question.

BY DR . PAUL S TANTON SUPER INTENDENT, WESD Greetings WESD Partners and Community Members, This is Dr. Paul Stanton, and I am honored to serve as the Superintendent of the WESD. We have officially wrapped up the first quarter of the school year today, and what an amazing first quarter it has been. Our students are excelling thanks to our committed and hardworking teachers and staff. Our community members also play an important role in the success of the district – and for that I say thank you. Let’s continue to make it a great school year together. Fiesta Bowl Charities Surprises Mountain Sky Teacher In partnership with College Foothill Playoff Foundation, Fiesta Bowl Charities surprised Mountain Sky Junior High School PE Teacher Brittany Oddo with $1,000 to thank her and celebrate all she does for her students. The award was part of College Foothill Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers Week, which was dedicated to honoring and recognizing great teachers nationwide. Congratulations to Ms. Oddo! Mountain Sky Teacher Wins APS Supply My Class Award Congratulations to Mountain Sky Junior High School teacher Mary Ashley who was recently selected as an Arizona Public Service (APS) Supply My Class award recipient. Entering its sixth year, the APS Supply My Class program awards $500 to 500 randomly selected teachers in APS service territory to help ensure they have the resources they need to support the success of their students. Special thank you to APS for supporting our teachers and classrooms! WESD Continues Attendance Campaign for 2023-2024 School Year The WESD is proud to share the continuation of its #AttendanceMattersWESD campaign! The theme for the month and the school year is Showing Up Together. We initiated the campaign last school year with a focus on emphasizing the importance of being in school each day and improving student attendance across the district. We are excited to share that the attendance rate for the 2022-2023 school year was 91.95%, which was an increase of 3.95% from the previous year. Additionally, the WESD reduced chronic absenteeism by more than 11%! This year, our goal is to increase daily attendance by 2% and decrease chronic absenteeism by 8%. In support of these goals, the WESD will be sharing important attendance tips and resources on social media all school year long. To learn more about our attendance campaign, please visit https://www.wesdschools. org/attendancematterswesd. Keep Up with the WESD Online The WESD is always sharing positive news on its social media pages including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. Be sure to follow our pages so you do not miss any important highlights and updates. You can also follow all our schools on Facebook and Instagram, including Lookout Mountain Elementary School and Mountain Sky Junior High School. Visit the following link for a complete list our district and school social media pages: www.wesdschools.org/ socialmediadirectory. Whether you are a community member, parent, guardian or grandparent of the district, we want you to know you are a valued member of the WESD Family. Thank you for the support, love and care you show to our students, staff and schools. All of it would not be possible without you. wesdsuperintendent@wesdschools.org
