Home Base B Y: PAY T O N FA R L E Y, C L A S S O F 2 02 5 On November 20, 2021 my National Charity League (NCL) class, the class of 2025, went to Home Base to make holiday meals and decorate the dining room for the holidays. Home Base has always been one of my favorite non-profit organizations, and one that I have enjoyed volunteering at in the past. When my class and I went there to work for the holidays it was my favorite time that I have ever been and worked there. Home Base is a program for young adults 18 and older who have grown out of the foster care system and have nowhere to go. Home Base provides a place for the young adults to stay, food to eat, and help finding jobs. While they are staying at Home Base they are required to follow the rules that are set. They must either be in school, working, or looking for work, which makes sure that the young adults will be able to have a good life when they leave Home Base. While we were there we made decorations for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and we also made desserts for these holidays, like apple pies. It was right before Thanksgiving, so we put up the Thanksgiving decorations and gave the Christmas decorations to the person in charge of Home Base. When we were there preparing the food and putting the decorations, many young adults were walking in and out of the dining room, to get their lunches, and the looks on

their faces when they walked in was the best part. One of my fellow NCL class members, Taylor Williamson, said, “It was a memory I will never forget.” Right after Thanksgiving we got an amazing text from the leader of Home Base, saying that the young adults were so very grateful for the food and decorations, and it made it feel a little more like home. That text made my class members and I feel amazing about what we had done. While helping others was the main point of our philanthropy project, we were also able to bond as a class. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, my class has not had some of the same opportunities as some of the prior classes to bond and really get to know one another. This philanthropy project allowed us all to come together, do something to benefit others, and get to know one another better. NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences. Members include girls ranging from 7th to 12th grade along with their mothers. For more information about NCL, Inc., please visit our website at moonvalley.natioanlcharityleague.org

Rookie Mom: How You Can Help Moon Valley’s Homeless My brother Danny was a hilariously brilliant, musically inclined, Catholicraised altar server, university-educated drug addict. He died when he was 26 of an overdose from Xanax. Danny always referred to himself as a “high-class addict” because prescription drugs were his vice. Danny’s struggles of course spilled into the emotional maturity of my family's lives, especially my parents who did everything in their power to stop his addiction. I always thought because my parents had the means that he would eventually be “cured,” attending two expensive rehabs and even serving a yearlong stint in prison of which we thought sobered him. There were a few times when we stopped enabling him and where he ended up homeless in his early 20s. I have this memory when I was around 16 or 17 when I was driving with my mom running errands. We see handsome Danny, dirty, out of nowhere wandering a neighborhood with cheap items in his arms, homeless. A whip-smart man with his bachelor’s of computer science high like nothing else babbling in a random neighborhood asking for help, most likely for drugs. Unfortunately, in Phoenix, we see it on the streets all of the time. In 2020, The Arizona Republic reported that there were 3,767 people in Maricopa county living without shelter alone. Danny actually died in an apartment complex in this Moon Valley neighborhood. When I see panhandlers on the street, I make sure to give them whatever I have in my car that’s not money: unopened bottled water, packaged fruit snacks or graham crackers that I have saved in my car for whenever my daughter gets hungry, or even issues of The Moon Valley Tattler. Because when I see people living on the streets, I think about if they were quite literally my brother – a man stuck in his addiction needing the love and comfort of his community to keep him going. Or – a mother’s dread – my daughter. How would I want my community to compassionately support my lost adult child? If you see a panhandler on the street, my ask of you is to throw compassion at this individual because we have no idea what demons they are trying to overcome. Addicts, people who are being sex trafficked, we have no idea. If you feel uncomfortable giving to those on the street, you can donate to Phoenix Rescue Mission at phoenixrescuemission.org/give/.

B Y B R I G H I D CO N S TA B L E

As to anyone, I find the Serenity Prayer to be helpful for strength. I am not a religious person, but I am spiritual. Replacing God with “higher self,” “Universe,” “source,” whatever gives you hope. I do believe that there is you right now, the ego and base self, and then this conscious, all-knowing source connected to everyone and everything. So, if you consider “God” or “Him” that higher version of yourself that knows “better,” this prayer might (hopefully) give you strength. The Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity Taking, as He did, this sinful world To accept the things I cannot change; As it is, not as I would have it; Courage to change the things I can; Trusting that He will make things right And wisdom to know the difference. If I surrender to His Will; Living one day at a time; So that I may be reasonably happy in this Enjoying one moment at a time; life Accepting hardships as the pathway to And supremely happy with Him peace; Forever and ever in the next.

LET TER FROM THE EDITOR

Put on your green, tis the season for luck and good fortune. The countdown is on for Saint Patrick’s Day, while not a legal holiday anywhere in the United States, is nonetheless widely recognized and celebrated throughout the country. It is observed as a celebration of Irish and Irish American culture that include prominent displays of the color green, eating and drinking, religious observances, and numerous parades and parties. And of course EVERYONE is IRISH that day! Luck has also been long associated with the Irish, but after studying about the Irish and their luck, it seems it may have been only just a saying or the opposite at best. The Irish did not survive the long potato famine and being treated as 3rd class citizens upon their arrival to the U.S. ( til the mid-late 1900’s) by LUCK instead it was because of positive outlooks and the great sense of humors. So, you too can be lucky- it’s an easy skill to learn. There was a study done a few years back and the conclusion to Luck was this: it’s more of an attitude and, positive outlooks on bad situations. So good choices, thoughts and behavior are the key to good luck!!!! May the Luck of the Irish be with you, may you rise up and persevere and drink up the Green Beer! Cheers! Be safe while partying with all those little Leprechauns. pp

Bowls and Blankets

M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B I E ER BS TO E SSER

I recognized a long time ago that we’re a ‘bowl and blanket’ family. We like getting cozy. Meals that you might serve on a plate, we eat from a bowl. Warm days and nights might mean turning up the a/c for you, but we’re under blankets, even if they’re only on our feet, because we like the feeling of being embraced, even if it’s from fleece. In trying to remember where it started, I could finally pinpoint the Bundle Blankets. Our nightly routine; I breastfed the baby and went to take a shower and go to bed because I never knew when I might be summoned for ‘more’ and what time of the Godforsaken night it might happen. Gary would wrap our son in his ‘Bundle Blanket’ and cuddle him. Long after he was asleep, Gary would put him down. I had plenty of time to bond between breastfeeding and staying home all day with them. This bedtime routine was Daddy’s turn to bond and they all relished in it. I sometimes got to sleep all night because of Gary’s expert craftsmanship at putting the kid down! As our boys got older they turned their ripped and threadbare ‘bundle blankets’ into turbans and capes. I washed and tucked them away as keepsakes before they got too badly destroyed and made capes like Batman and Superman in every color except brown and yellow…. don’t ask why, idk. As a result, we’re a family of cuddlers. . . we’re a Blanket and Bowl Family . . .and proud of it.

What is the phoenix active transportation planning effort? B Y F R O S T Y K R O E N I N G Kini Knudson, Director of the Phoenix Street Transportation Department outlined several of Phoenix’s new programs to improve traffic safely and flow in the City. The Accelerated Pavement Maintenance Program, which was to extend five years, may be finished in 3 1/2 years. We have been experiencing the slow-downs while the work is being done to recoat and repair roadways. Another project is providing “cool pavement” in nine locations to reduce urban heat impact. These projects can reduce temperatures 10 to 12 degrees in the pavement with significant reductions in air temperatures. A third program is the “Cool Corridors” program which adds 1,800 trees to rights-of-ways along roads. Each City Council district is allotted 200 trees. Another effort is specifying onemile segments of roads for which alternative modes of transportation are enabled. The Phoenix Active Transportation Plan considers all modes of transport and aims to create safer infrastructure for all. The core focus areas of the plan are: Design, Network Development, Policy, and Community Survey. Last month (February 2022) the community survey was completed. The result of the survey will be the Road Safety Action Plan. The process was unanimously approved by the Phoenix City Council. Why is all this planning needed? Because Phoenix has the third highest number of fatalities on our streets in the nation. Citizens have felt this is an unacceptable statistic and have been calling for investment to make

roadways safer. Accidents were down during the early stages of Covid. Now they are up again and growing annually. We are the 5th largest city in the Nation and have 30,376 or more crashes every year. One fatal crash occurs every other day. Enough people are killed each year to fill a Boeing 737. Transportation crashes affect more than the persons involved. Injuries and deaths resound through families and communities. The goal of the new plan is to help people travel safely from point A to point B. The new Road Safety Action Plan will involve 1) engineering, 2) driver/rider/walker education, 3) enforcement of traffic laws, and 4) evaluation of the effectiveness of all the above. Maps of the location of all crashes in the City are available on the web. The email to use to give input to the City is: RoadSafety@ phoenix.gov. The public portion of the plan will have passed, but by calling (602)2626284 residents may be able to share concerns with staff. Use the www.phoenix.gov/streets/ roadsafety website to give input on your roadway safety issues. If we want speed cameras back, we can specify those tools. If we want adaptive signal timing (which lowers driver frustration levels), we can ask for that kind of engineered equipment. All this is very exciting for Phoenix! Especially the driver/rider/walker education part that is up to every one of us to assist each other to arrive home safely.

We’re more than just 1,614 homes By Moon Valley Neighborhood Association President Drew Hutchinson Well technically we’re currently 1,613 homes due to the vacant lot on Coral Gables Drive. Hello everyone, Drew Hutchinson here and this is my first Tattler article for the Moon Valley neighborhood Association (MVNA). Clip this and save it, I’m sure it will be worth something in the future. All kidding aside, I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about the MVNA and our goals for 2022. When I say “our goals” I’m not just talking about the goals set by the all volunteer board of directors. I’m talking about community goals. We all drive the same streets, we shop at the same stores, we all hate the street lights at Coral Gables and Thunderbird, we’re a community. As for goals for the MVNA for 2022, we are looking to build back our community events and neighborhood engagement. Right now there is a locally organized Food Truck event on the first Tuesday of every month at Moon Valley Park, 2 community garage sale events, a car parade on the 4th of July and another in December to see the holiday lights. Speaking of holiday lights, this past year was one of the biggest for Moon Valley. I believe almost every local news channel covered Moon Valley holiday lights at one point. Do you have an event or an event idea? Get involved! Contact us at board@moonvalley.org Whether you have been in the neighborhood for 40+ years or just moved in last month, you matter. As a board we try to make the best decisions for the community. We’re not always right, but we try our best. Please, if you have an opinion or a better way to do something, speak up. We all want the same thing. A better neighborhood for our kids to grow up in, for us to retire in, for us to build a stronger future in, for all of us to call home. As I start my term as the MVNA President I ask a favor of you. Whether you live within the 1,614 homes of Moon Valley that I have been asked to represent, or not, I’m asking you to be that neighbor that is there to help. We are all a part of any amazing community, but we can always get better. The MVNA is just a small group of volunteers trying to help as many Moon Valley residents as we can. Let us hear from you, board@moonvalley.org. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Looking forward to another amazing year in Moon Valley. Moon Valley - Neighbors helping Neighbors

Increasing Confidence “Work has given me the confidence that I can do anything I want to if I put my mind to it.” – Jessica M.

Home Resources: Home Inspections BY JULIE PEK When you are buying a home, part of the process should include a home inspection. In Arizona a buyer has 10 days to “get to know” their home once they are under contract, and I highly recommended that you hire a professional inspector to help. I also recommend a professional home inspection for a seller to help identify potential areas of concern that a buyer’s inspector will ultimately find. “Home inspections help a buyer or seller make decisions based on the information gathered,” says Matt Jenks, owner of First Step Home Inspections. Matt and his team have been inspecting homes in the valley since 2005. Inspectors generally take around 4 hours and evaluate the condition of everything from the roof to the slab for functionality, safety concerns and overall condition. An extensive written report is then prepared for the client. “There are six big items a buyer or seller should focus on: roof, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, structure, and pool (if applicable),” says Matt. Significant problems with any of these could make or break a real estate transaction. In today’s market condition, a seller is likely to make a larger profit if the home has everything in working order. The best inspectors are licensed and insured, have proven knowledge and experience, professional and prompt in their reporting. As a realtor, I will connect you to their services, saving you time. Don’t Let This Pain Make You WIthdraw From Daily Life

Pelvic Pain. Living with pelvic pain is an exhausting challenge at best, and at worst can lead to complete withdrawal from daily life. Whether a new symptom, or a chronic condition, pelvic pain in women is incredibly common, but is not normal. Dr. John Davitt, and the team at Arizona Gynecology Consultants, are committed not only to educating their patients about the causes of pelvic pain, but to developing comprehensive treatment plans to manage pain and improve quality of life. Estimates of how many reproductive-age women are affected by chronic pelvic pain range from 6 to 25 percent, while dysmenorrhea (painful periods) affects fully 50 to 90 percent of reproductive-age women, numbers that highlight just how common these issues are. “Despite the statistics that we have showing how prevalent pelvic pain is, the causes are still under-evaluated in most patients” says Dr. Davitt. “We start every evaluation by listening to what the patient is experiencing, and has experienced, to inform our diagnosis and ensure that our treatment plan meets up with their goals,” Dr. Davitt explained, “this is especially important for patients who have been dealing with chronic pelvic pain - they’ve often been evaluated before and not received any answers as to why they’re in pain and what might be done to help.” Dr. Davitt is quick to point out that this approach is nothing new, but one he learned from his mentors in residency and minimally invasive surgery fellowship. “We’re still following [Sir William] Osler’s maxim that ‘the patient will tell you the diagnosis’ we’re just incorporating the best minimally invasive surgical techniques to aid that diagnosis and treatment.” Dr. Davitt goes on to describe the importance of this initial evaluation given the large number of causes that might contribute to a person’s experience of pelvic pain. Issues with one’s bowel, bladder, pelvic floor musculature, and the nervous system within the pelvis can all cause a sensation of pain. “What’s more” Dr. Davitt adds, “once a person has been in pain for a long time their mental perception of that pain can effectively become ‘worn in’ making it much more difficult for them to break away from the feeling.” The group at Arizona Gynecology Consultants are equipped to make comprehensive evaluations of a patient’s pain symptoms in order to provide a detailed diagnosis or diagnoses. Once an individual’s unique situation has been assessed, Arizona Gynecology Consultants can help coordinate specialists to address each possible factor playing a part in an individual’s pain. “As a surgeon, my particular interest is in the procedural treatments for pelvic pain,” says Dr.

8 March 2022 | info@mvtattler.com

Davitt, “but that doesn’t mean I neglect proven medical treatments for pelvic pain, or ignore the non-gynecologic causes of pain. We know that a team approach to treatment yields the best results and I’m happy to play whatever role in that treatment team a patient needs.” A new office for the practice, recently opened at 7th street and Bell road, will allow Dr. Davitt and his colleagues to bring their comprehensive approach to pelvic pain treatment to a greater number of patients in the valley. “We’re excited to be in a location more convenient for patients in North Phoenix, and even the West Valley,” said Dr. Davitt, adding “the new location should not only be more convenient, but also provide the space to allow us to help more patients each day.” In addition, Dr. Davitt notes the new office will allow AZ Gynecology Consultants to offer additional procedures and services to their patients. Among these procedures are pelvic floor muscle injection and selected nerve blocks. Patients will have their consultations and procedures performed in state-of-the art facilities that were only just completed this past January. In addition to office-based procedures Dr. Davitt, and his fellow surgeons at Arizona Gynecology Consultants, offer minimally invasive surgical options to treat heavy bleeding, fibroids, and complex surgical cases that might normally require a large, open incision. “We are always happy to work with a patient’s primary care provider, or OB/GYN, to accomplish a surgical goal with a minimally invasive approach, and to then have them continue their care with the provider they’ve always trusted.” Dr. Davitt adds, “One such approach, and one that has only recently become available, is the ablation of fibroids with use of radiofrequency energy.” He goes on, “in many cases we are able to treat fibroids without any incisions at all.” These surgeries can be performed at nearly all of the hospital systems in the valley, allowing patients to utilize the hospital that is most convenient to their home.

If you are experiencing pelvic pain or in need of a Gynecologist see Dr. Davitt and his team at Arizona Gynecology Consultants. They offer easy online scheduling on their website at azgyn.com, schedule today! www.moonvalleytattler.com

2022 Mortgage Loan Limits

THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON

In 2017 my wife was considering retiring, but the one thing we wanted to accomplish before she retired was to downsize to a smaller home. We just didn’t need all the space we had, and the costs associated with maintaining it. We got very lucky and were able to sell that home before it was listed. Although the first mortgage was virtually paid off, I had a HELOC (second mortgage) which was due to be paid off. Rather than reach into our retirement savings, we rolled that amount into a Reverse Mortgage on our new home. Thus, we have no principal and interest payments on our new home, and a sizeable amount of equity to boot. Now almost five years later, if I am to believe the estimates that I receive weekly from Redfin and Zillow, our new home has appreciated by 75% or more. We are seriously thinking about refinancing. The advantages for us would be a slightly lower interest rate and a much higher credit line that we could access in case of an emergency. And, the costs for us would be almost negligible. Good for us, huh? But here are other things to consider. Loan limits on conventional Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac loans have risen dramatically, as have home values Let’s consider a couple of scenarios. Suppose you have a current mortgage on which you are paying Mortgage Insurance (MI). It is worthwhile to investigate whether you can refinance and

secure a mortgage without MI. Almost assuredly your interest rate will be lower as well. This means much lower monthly payments. You should also investigate a shorter-term mortgage. There is a big advantage to lopping several years off your mortgage term. Another scenario is suppose you currently have a Jumbo mortgage. With the new higher loan limits for 2022 you may qualify for a conventional mortgage at a much lower rate. You may even be able to take some cash out without incurring the dreaded MI. Fannie and Freddie both have underwriting platforms that may allow you to proceed without an appraisal. No guarantees, but it is a good possibility. Upper loan limits for Fannie and Freddie for 2022 are $647,200 for Arizona. Thus, if your current mortgage is $517, 760 or less (80% of $647,200) a refinance would not require MI. Refinancing a Reverse Mortgage (HECM) is a no brainer. The upper limit is $970,800. The rule of thumb is depending on your age and the appraised value of your home, the RM lender can advance about 60% of the appraised amount. Obviously, conditions apply, but it is worth investigating. Rates are going up, but they haven’t yet. This is not the time to dilly-dally. Check out a refinance now. You will be glad you did.

Electric Mobile Everything BY LEON TRY ME BIKE SHOP It’s amazing all the new electric skateboards, scooters, unicycles, and best of all, bicycles. They seem to come in all shapes an sizes even ones that fold in two for easier hauling and storage. 20inch wheels all the way to 29 inch also fat tires 4inch wide to 1 inch narrow racing tires. Cost of a bike is as little as 500 dollars to 5 thousand dollars. Cost will be the factor of how long it will go between charges. Cheaper batteries need to be replaced sooner. Distance will depend on the battery and how much you pedal, 10 miles to 50 miles seems to be the average. Repairing these is different because many parts don’t interchange or not available. Some dealers will only repair what they sell. Best to buy name brands so they can be serviced. Cost of batteries are still costly but coming down in price. Wide 4 inch tires are 60 to 100 dollars better chose 2inch wide tires. Plus if you need to pedal home with no assist because the battery died life will be better. Electric is the new cool thing choose wisely! RIDE MORE, SEE MORE, TRY ME BICYCLE SHOP!

Taking Care of Your Beloved Pet with Estate Planning BY LIBBY BANK S, PLLC THE L AW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANK S

Those of us with pets consider them members of our family. Along with the rest of the family, we need to make sure our pets are cared for when we can no longer do the job! How do we do this with our estate planning? It can be complicated or simple, depending on you, your pet and what you want. How the Wealthy Plan for Their Pets First, the fun (or at least the roll-your-eyes) part: Some examples of how the wealthy sometimes provide for their pets. Leona Helmsley is a famous example. She left her entire $12 Million fortune to Trouble, her dog. The family sued, and the judge whittled Trouble’s share down to $2 Million. The widow of the Star Trek creator left $4 Million for their dogs, and $1 Million for the employee to care for them. Even Oprah Winfrey is rumored to have established a pet trust for her beloved dogs, setting aside $30 Million for their care. One of my favorites is Miami heiress Gail Posner who left $3 Million for her three dogs – and just $2 million to her son. Pet Trusts for You and Me Pet trusts are real. Arizona has established a law that allows us to set up a plan to provide for our pets. You may need a pet trust, even though you aren’t leaving millions behind. Why? Because some pets can live a long time, longer even than we live. Tortoises are one

example. A friend of mine has a Tortuga – a tortoise – named Pepe who could live for 100 years. A cockatoo can live as long as 60 years. When your pets could easily outlive you, you should plan for them to be adopted by the right people and provide the money to assure they get the care you want. Your pet may also be very expensive to keep. One example are horses, which require more time and money than most dogs or cats. A pet trust can be a great way to assure both that the money you leave is really used for the care of your pet, and also to provide for the succession of caregivers. Put Your Own Spin on the Instructions for Your Pet Trust Pet trusts allow a pet owner to provide not just money for the animal, but detailed requirements for their care. The owner designates the amount of money or other assets to be held in the pet trust, names the person who will handle that money and appoints a person to care for the pet. There can be one person or two different people in charge – one for the money management and one for the pet care. The pet trust can be created as a separate trust or created within your own revocable living trust. A Simple Plan Is Also Great For those who want a simpler plan, we can provide for a designated caregiver to take the pets and include a cash gift for their care. We often also include directions to the trustee to find a suitable new home if the original caregiver is not available. However you wish to provide for your pets, it is important to put the instructions into a binding plan. Having a plan in place for your assets, for your pets and for your own care if you are incapacitated will give you immense peace of mind. If you are interested in putting an estate plan in place, I offer a complimentary first consultation. Give me a call (602-3756752) or check out my website (www.libbybanks.com).

WESD Updates for MArch 2022

BY DR . PAUL S TANTON, SUPERINTENDENT, WESD

As we prepare for spring break, I can’t help but reflect on how far we’ve come in the last two years. Since the beginning of this global pandemic, WESD students, teachers, administrators and staff have faced numerous challenges, but thanks to the support of parents, grandparents and community members like you, we have managed to modify and adjust accordingly to provide our students a high quality, engaging learning experience. Thank you for supporting you neighborhood schools and the WESD. Now Enrolling: The WESD is now enrolling for the 2022-2023 school year. The WESD provides free, full-day Kindergarten that offers an immersive experience in high academics, art, music and PE. Early Childhood Enrichment Programs are available for four-year-old students and STEAM programs are also available for students who wish to pursue careers in technology, math, engineering and science. Gifted programs are available for WESD students who are self-directed learners, problem-solvers, community contributors, collaborative workers and complex thinkers. If you are interested in seeing what our District has to offer, please visit our Welcome and Registration Center located at 3200 W. Cholla St. For more information, or to begin filling out the registration materials, visit the Web site at www.wesdschools.org/registration. If you have any questions, please call 602-896-6950. Please share with your family and friends. Nutrition Services Job Fairs: The WESD’s Nutrition Services Department will host a hiring event EVERY Tuesday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Service Center, 12641 N. 39th Avenue. They are looking for unit leaders, managers and helpers to fill full and part-time positions at several of our campuses. These positions are especially great for parents who want to be on the same schedule as their child. Visit https://jobs.wesdschools.org/ to apply online. March Virtual and In-person Teacher Interview Fair: WESD is hiring elementary, middle school and special education teachers for the 2022-2023 school year. The WESD will be hosting an in-person interview fair on Wednesday, March 23rd from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. at the WESD Administrative Center (4650 W. Sweetwater Ave.), and a virtual interview fair March 21st – 24th from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Interviews are open to currently certified teachers, student teachers and those with a bachelor’s degree in any area interested in becoming teachers. Mitigation strategies will apply for in-person interviews. Please be sure to share this information with teachers or soon-to-be teachers you know. To learn more about teaching in the WESD, contact Lydia Garcia, Senior Recruiter, at Lydia.Garcia@wesdschools.org or by calling 602-347-2622. Community Input Sought for ELA Materials: WESD is in the process of

reviewing and adopting English Language Arts (ELA) materials to support teachers with instruction in reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary to enhance student achievement. WESD is inviting teachers, staff, families and community members to view the variety of materials on display at the WESD Administrative Center and to provide input. The ELA Adoption Committee will review all feedback to help make an informed recommendation to the superintendent and Governing Board. All materials that are being reviewed are aligned to the Arizona English Language Arts Standards. Materials can be reviewed in person at the WESD Administrative Center, 4650 W. Sweetwater Ave., Glendale, AZ 85304 during regular business hours 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Materials are available for review through March 16. If you have questions about the ELA materials or the process, please contact Paula McWhirter, director of Curriculum and Instruction, at paula.mcwhirter@wesdschools.org. Give Back to Your Local School through Tax Credits: Tax season is here! Did you know you may be able to reduce your tax liability and support students in the WESD with a tax credit donation? Your donation provides WESD students the opportunity to take part in field trips and succeed in extracurricular activities by funding items such as uniform replacements, equipment and stipends for coaches and sponsors. Additionally, your donation can also fund risers, scoreboards, soccer goals, marquees, playground equipment, 3-D printers, library books, classroom furniture and more! You will also receive a dollar for dollar reduction on your state income taxes. When you make your donation by April 15, you can choose which tax year to apply the credit to. If you’re looking to contribute to a school that could use extra support, please consider Sunset Elementary, John Jacobs Elementary, Chaparral Elementary, Manzanita Elementary and Desert Foothills Junior High. Donating is simple. Visit www.wesdschools.org/taxcredit and you can enhance the education of a child in just a few steps. Thank you for your support. For more information, contact at 602-347-2737. Connecting with WESD: It’s not hard to find great news about our students, staff and community. Please make sure to like us and follow us on Facebook so that you can stay in the know about events, student and staff recognitions and important updates. You can also stay up-to-date with the latest news on our website at www.wesdschools.org. As always, thank you for choosing WESD.

Taking care of your core By knowing these Core symptoms BY BILL OF ANY TIME FITNESS

The most important reason for training the core is injury prevention—primarily for the back. The best way to protect your back is to strengthen your core. What Are Core Muscles? Are you able to swing a golf club, kayak down a river, or trim the hedge? If so, then thank your core. Core muscles are in your body’s trunk. Your core extends from the diaphragm to the pelvis, forming a muscular 360-degree band around the body. Signs of Weak Core Muscles: Muscle weakness or decreased control of these muscles can be a result of surgery, injury or inactivity. Common signs of weakness or decreased control of your core muscles can lead to dysfunction in your movement and, ultimately, affect your quality of life. Here are a few common symptoms of poor core stability. Lower Back Pain Bad Balance Poor Posture Hard to Get Up or Down Difficulty Standing for Long Periods How we can help! Our certified personal trainers can meet with you to discuss any issues/ limitations you may be having. From there, they can determine if a doctor clearance is needed to move forward. A movement assessment will help identify movement pattern limitations or muscle weakness to develop a plan. Optimal results come from working with a trainer a few times a week and will get you back to doing some of the things you have been missing. We are happy to provide the initial session at no charge. Inspired to be a Better Neighbor BY CHRISTINA BIERLING Many of us have grown up hearing stories about what it means to be a good neighbor From the timeless parable of the Good Samaritan to the gracious lessons of Mr. Rogers, we get a glimpse of what a neighbor really looks like. A neighbor may be someone who lives next door, or even down the street. You and I are Moon Valley neighbors. But perhaps, more than our proximity, our compassionate actions are what set us apart as good neighbors. Are we treating others with respect and value, the way we would want to be treated? Do we sit back and judge or do we choose to reach out to anyone who crosses our path and needs a hand or shoulder to lean on. Do we go the extra mile? I have people around me who personally inspire me to be a better neighbor. I know a couple who gave their time and heart to help a small town group of teenagers grow in their relationship with Jesus, and touched many with their service to God and ministry to others. I know someone who had an abusive childhood and now will willingly run to help abused children, at any time of the day or night, to be that person who protects and is strong for them. I know a young pastor and his family who are faithful to lead and disciple even if for a few. I know a high school staff who will go out of their way to make everyone around them feel like family, and step up to help those in need. Most of us know someone who has been a good neighbor and came to our service when we needed it the most, and never asked for anything in return. These types of people challenge me. By their example, my heart is stirred to love and serve others more. It challenges me to pray for an open heart and spiritual wisdom to be a good neighbor right here in Moon Valley. My childhood friend Meridith and I will still get together to visit. And, about a year ago, I brought up creating a bracelet that would make a difference in the lives of those in addiction recovery. Meridith agreed that this was an area of need, especially during this season of covid. So we used our time, and our love for art, creative innovation and the Bible to make encouragement keychains and bracelets. The full 9 set beads are interchangeable and come with encouragement cards. They are meant to be a physical reminder of God’s love and presence for those in recovery. And, we are excited to launch our CarriedThroughShop on Etsy. May I ask, what is your passion? You have a unique past and unique gifts that no one else possesses. You have a loving God who can turn any hurt or hardship around. There is purpose for this season of your life. I look forward to seeing what beautiful neighborly actions of compassion will come from our open hearts. Your neighbor, Christy This article is dedicated to #Itsfromcharlie

Where Will You Find Your Hallelujah? B Y L I N D A H E N L E Y- S M I T H

Most people are familiar with Leonard Cohen’s beautiful song titled simply “Hallelujah.” There are many interpretations of this piece; and there have been several versions and been word changes but there is no altering the emotional impact of the haunting tune and the powerful and deep meaning of the word Hallelujah. Everyone’s hallelujah comes from within and no doubt from a place unique unto every individual. The word comes from the Hebrew language and is composed of two elements: praise, and the name of God. Whether or not you are a religious person, when we are moved to say it, the very word comes from deep inside of us and can be called to mind in times of despair as well as in times of joy. When we have ben deeply wounded by a tragedy and are feeling lost and confused, eventually there will be a glimmer of light in our darkness, and it is then that we are moved to cry hallelujah in gratitude and relief. Cohen’s lyrics address this in musical terms referring to a song whose melody reflets a minor fall and then rises in a major lift. That is life. There are the somber and troubling times, but if we endure with hope and belief in possibilities, there will once again be a time for joy and a reason for Hallelujah. In these troubled times, we are seeing a vast span of emotions being expressed by people all around us and those emotions are making themselves known in a variety of ways. It is up to each one of us whether we raise our arms in rage or lift them in a personal hallelujah. Hallelujah is a symbol of hope and gratitude and a cause for joy. No matter how troubled we may feel in any situation; there is always the hope of a Hallelujah moment if we will focus on the possibilities. Sometimes when we feel as if we are in a dark pit, it’s good to remember that when we are down, we are in a good position to look up and see the light. If we feel broken and cracked, it’s helpful to remember that it is through cracks that light shines in. I didn’t make that up; it’s another Leonard Cohen lyric, but I’m sure he wouldn’t mind It looks nice. We just have a few changes. if I used it.

As students navigate new challenges in high school, some are able to demonstrate resilience and overcome ethical dilemmas. Often, these acts go unnoticed, but should be recognized to inspire others to do the right thing, and the Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship does just that. Better Business Bureau Serving the Pacific Southwest (BBB) encourages ethical behavior in the community, and the BBB Ethical Torch Essay helps students recognize these actions at an early age. This scholarship honors students who have chosen to respond with integrity when faced with a dilemma. “By promoting trust and ethical conduct with students, they will be able to model that behavior when they enter the workforce,” shared Faustine Chan, Director of Business and Community Programs. The program aligns with BBB’s annual Torch Awards for Ethics which celebrates companies for upholding outstanding integrity throughout their business operations. Students are invited to write a 400 word essay on “The Importance of Ethics and Integrity in our Community”. The prompt challenges students to recall an encounter that caused inner-conflict and the ethical resolution tactics that guided them through. High school students in Greater AZ are eligible to apply and five winners will each be awarded $500-$1,500 in scholarships to be used for college tuition and expenses. To submit an application or to learn more, visit torchessay.bbbcommunity. org. What Exercise Does to Your Brain BY NI CH O L A S WAR NER , D C

We know exercise is good for the brain; abundant research links consistent physical activity to reduced rates of cognitive decline with aging. And just last issue, we presented study findings suggesting exercise benefits your brain by reducing chronic anxiety. But why is exercise so good for the brain, particularly when we›re older? New research gives us an answer. A team of investigators found that higher levels of late-life physical activity correlate with higher levels of synaptic proteins that promote information exchange among brain neurons. According to the researchers, writing on their findings in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, this is significant because while physical activity has been shown to benefit cognition in mice trials, the association has proven to be more challenging in human studies. (In fact, they claim this is the first such study to verify an association between physical activity and markers of synaptic integrity in human brain tissue.) If you’re thinking late-age physical activity is all you need to worry about, so you can sit on the couch year after year until then, the researchers offer this important observation as well: “We suggest PA may help build synaptic health, even at late ages ... but this is a potentially plastic process that may need to be sustained over time.” In other words, lifetime physical activity is likely also a key factor in, well, lifelong brain health. THE WRITER’S INSPIRATION GROUP The Writer’s Inspiration Group is a fun and creative group of writers who meet each Tuesday, currently via Zoom. Each week we spend an hour or so writing from prompts. Attend once and it’s easy to understand the process. At the Writer’s Inspiration Group creative freedom is encouraged. Prompts are as simple as -- write about your favorite food. Or tell us what Spring looks like in your neighborhood. Prompts are meant to be simple and inspirational. There are no right or wrong answers. The goal is to just let the writing flow. Keep the pen, or computer keys, moving. We write for five to ten minutes on each prompt. Writers can choose whether to read work aloud. In time, it becomes easier and more fun. The key word is fun. When a writer reads, everyone just listens. No comments. (Appreciative laughter is always allowed). No criticism. Simple as that. At WIG, as we call ourselves, we welcome writers of all levels, who write in all genres. We don’t care if writers have or have not been published. All that matters is that one gets pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, and writes without worry or fear. Fiction, essay, memoir, poetry, all is encouraged. The goal after our time writing together on Tuesday afternoons, is to take that spark of creativity with you in the hope it will help you with any further writing you may do that week. The Writer’s Inspiration Group meets from 3 to 4:30 p.m. each Tuesday via Zoom. No fee. If interested in joining us, please contact Susanne Brent at susanholly@cox.net. She will provide answers to all your questions.

The Moon Valley Tattler | March 2022 21

Community

Driven

At Locality Homes, community is at the heart of everything we do. It’s more than just our tagline, it’s a key part of our mission and values. In 2021 alone, we donated more than $10,000 to local charities that we support. In fact, a portion of every transaction goes to a local non-profit in the name of our clients. In addition to direct donations, we organized and led fundraisers which drew in over $10,000 in additional support for our charities of choice. The three organizations we chose to support in 2021 were Families Raising Hope, Homeless ID Project, and Arizona Helping Hands. Families Raising Hope assists cancer patients and their families with the financial burden that cancer treatments pose so that they can focus on their health, healing, and recovery. Homeless ID Project helps clients acquire, at no cost to them, replacement identification documents including birth certificates and other supporting documents, the first step to changing someone’s homelesseness. Arizona Helping Hands is the largest provider of essential needs to the 14,000+ children in foster care in Arizona In addition to supporting the organizations listed above, Locality Homes organized 5 blood drives in 2021, collecting enough pints of blood to save over 300 people. You can join us for our next blood drive March 26th. Simply go to www.redcross.org, put in the sponsor code “moonvalley” and sign up today!

We also work with local businesses in all of our marketing and support for our business. Local company, Hub Media, is our go-to for professional photos and videos on all of our listings. We use a local printer, Lithotech, to print our 8x11 postcard, sent to more than 4,000 Moon Valley homes. On that postcard, we highlight local businesses at no cost to them. A few businesses we have promoted include Paint My Place, La Paloma Flowers, Mamma Toledo’s Pie Hole and many more! Go to our website, www.localityhomes.com to read our blog posts for more about these cool local businesses. Speaking of cool, one of the businesses we featured, Tropical Sno, participated in one of our community events, providing snow cones for 200+ kids to cool off. Nothing makes us feel better than making an impact in the community and we would love to have you join us! For the month of March, anyone who makes a contribution to one of the local non-profits listed above will receive a Moon Valley hat! Further, each person will be entered into a drawing to win a custom set of Moon Valley cornhole boards. Just forward your donation receipt to jen@localityhomes.com to enter.
