Filling Your Holiday Season with Joy Through Giving Back:

Salvation Army Christmas Angels

The holiday season has always been my favorite time of the year. As a kid, I always looked forward to the seasonal sweets, hot chocolate for breakfast and gifts under the Christmas tree, but for some families, this season can look very different. Trying to figure out how to make the season magical for the whole family with limited resources on hand can cause stress.

National Charity League (NCL) has shown me what the holidays look like all over Phoenix and that has led me to love the season even more.

In my first few years, my mom, my sister, and I volunteered in The Salvation Army warehouse sorting and bagging donated gifts to be passed out to families. I did not fully understand the impact of the work we were doing because there was no physical contact with the families. Nonetheless, I loved going. They would always have Christmas music, and head workers shouting out for what they needed next or asking for more volunteers to rotate stations. They kept it very organized by having tags with the family’s name, all the kids in their family, the kid’s wish lists, and what the family really needed. I enjoyed this event specifically because everyone was moving to accomplish a bigger goal, and while doing so

around us. The gifts we were sorting were part of the Christmas Angel program, a donation drive to acquire the gifts needed to fill the bags for families. This event consists of various volunteer run booths set up throughout the city. We get to talk to people about our experiences in the community and how people are helping by donating gifts for the family. Here the mother daughter connection that NCL strives to provide felt very prominent. The small booth

encouraged connections and allowed for easy conversation. These two different events created a fun environment to grow and learn about our community, while focusing on the mother daughter bond. Although these activities were great, I still didn’t fully realize how other people in our city may experience the holiday season.

Last year, my mom and I signed up for another Salvation Army warehouse event, but she said this time was different. I was excited but did not fully believe her. I had done Salvation Army for a few years and knew what it was. We went

Hello, Moon Valley!

I am so excited to continue to represent District 3 on Phoenix City Council. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you. I wanted to take a moment to give you an update on a partnership between the City of Phoenix Water Department and American Water Resources. You may have received a letter from the City of Phoenix Water Department about a partnership with American Water Resources. City of Phoenix property owners are responsible for maintaining and repairing the sewer and water lines that run through their property and connect to the City’s main lines. The City of Phoenix has partnered with American Water Resources to offer low-cost water service line, sewer/septic service line, and other protection programs to Phoenix residents. AWR is the City of Phoenix’s exclusive provider of Water and Sewer Line Protection Programs to city homeowners. To learn more or enroll visit: awrusa.com/phoenix.

I also wanted to invite you to our annual holiday party, taking place at The Joybus Diner on December 13th. We will be collecting donations for Childhelp. We hope to see you all there!”

Very

Sincerely,

Ella (right) and her mom volunteering.

TRAPPED IN MOON VALLEY

In 2010 I wrote that money cannot buy me love, as the subject in my December publisher article. Well 14 years later and I still believe just that, although many things have changed since then and our family has grown larger and “littles” are now part of our mix again. Which means one thing for sure… shopping is fun again! When is the last time you looked in the toy aisle, the little crocs, and soft onesies? They are adorable, and of course very hard to walk by, so the cycle begins again, and my cart is filled with bright colored toys, games and new outfits. That 3rd generation is the apple of our eyes and fun to watch open and play with most of the same toys, I bought their parents 30 years ago. We will enjoy them, because we know just how fast they grow up, and become the parents.

2024 has been a very happy and busy year for me, we have traveled the world and had the great opportunities to savor, feel and see so many new sites while we also rekindled many old memories of trips and faces from the past. In February we traveled to the Philippines to see and stay with the family I lived with when I was 18, 44 years later, I introduced my husband to the “mom and dad” that were a huge part of my rearing, teaching me culture, Christianity, and the meaning of large family traditions and love. Mom Linda died in September.

As I write this last publisher musing, I am traveling in an old world style, sailing to and from San Diego Port, 10 days at sea while visiting 5 Hawaiian Islands. We spent Thanksgiving Day, in Maui celebrating and remembering our wedding day at the same beach 29 years earlier.

My heart and head are full of great memories. Well can money buy love? No but it sure helps in creating the memoires made by traveling back to some of the best days of your life.

As we embark on this holiday season, spend the time to make the best and most memorable memories you can. They say- Life is Short. Merry Christmas!

Dawn Trapp

went to the same warehouse. We met in the same corner before we started, but then they assigned us jobs. We were bag runners. We were taking the already packaged bags of gifts and running them out to the cars of the families that requested them. It worked as a drive-through, with people in the back telling us who was coming and people in the front directing cars out. Here I saw, talked to and directly helped people who had reached out and requested assistance to make their holiday season special. Some cars were really nice, some had a back seat full of kids excited to get their gifts, some windows did not roll down, some doors did not open, and some did not celebrate Christmas. Some of the parents did not speak English and the kids would translate for them, or the adults would nod their heads as a sign of understanding. The variety of cars, communities and people that I saw all come together for one cause made it all worth it.

That car ride home my mom and I shared all our different experiences about the families we met. We talked about how sweet it was to see the young kids get so excited to see a bag of toys coming into the car or the parents who opened their trunks to hide the gifts to surprise their families. Everyone was so grateful to be there no matter their situation - both the volunteers and the families in need. I am so grateful to have these experiences through NCL with my mom because they last a lifetime and

show me what community really is.

“So

Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye”

Many thanks to Rodgers and Hammerstein for the wonderful lyrics, and to Julie Andrew and the Trapp Family Singers (not sure if they are related to Dawn) for such a riveting performance in “The Sound of Music”. They will stay with us forever.

I reached a memorable milestone this year. I turned 80 years old. Thank my lucky stars that I am still in great health, can walk 18 holes while pushing a golf cart, still remember my words (most of the time), and can balance my checkbook. I make the joke with my golfing buddies that I can shoot my age, but the reality is that I’m only 80, not 105.

It’s time to hang it up. Although I am still licensed as a Mortgage Loan Officer, I’m not really working too hard at my profession. Former clients, friends and family, and an occasional referral still get my rapt attention, but I’m not out beating the bushes for business. I still keep up with the almost daily updates that my employer, Peoples Mortgage Company, provides us with. They keep me informed, but frankly there are a wide variety of loans that I will never do. Reverse Mortgages and conventional 30-year loans are my specialty.

In looking back, I have been writing this column since 2013 or about 11 years. It has been lots of fun. Most of my topics have centered around the mortgage industry, but I have opined about some other stuff as well. I never really used the column to directly promote my business. Compliance issues precluded that, but my ad was in close proximity, so if you saw my column, you also saw my ad. For a number of years, I partnered with Blanche Lukes, a local Moon Valley resident and Realtor, before she retired. Thanks Blanche, for your help and support.

Most especially, thanks to Dawn and Hana, and the Moon Valle Tattler, a real Moon Valley treasure. It’s been fun. Hope to see you around! - Gerry Johnson -

THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON

Greetings WESD Partners and Community Members,

This is Dr. Paul Stanton, and I am honored to serve as the proud Superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District (WESD). It is from the heart when I say that we have outstanding teachers, administrators, support staff, parents and guardians, community members and partners who have ensured that our students receive quality experiences at school. During this special time of the year, please join me in expressing gratitude to all of those who support the district and show love to the entire WESD Family. I am thankful for each and every one of you. I wish you all a safe, relaxing and joyful holiday season, and I look forward to your continued partnership in the new year.

Support Your Local WESD School this Season of Giving

During this season of giving, please consider making a tax credit donation to one or both of your local WESD schools including Lookout Mountain Elementary and Mountain Sky Junior High. A tax credit donation not only allows you to directly impact our students’ education, but also reduces your state tax liability (up to $200 filing single or $400 filing jointly). Your donation also provides our students with opportunities to participate in field trips, and succeed in extracurricular activities by funding items such as uniform replacements, equipment, and stipends for coaches and sponsors. Donating is simple. You can either visit the school office to complete a tax credit form or make your donation online at https://bit.ly/3Ao6nZ7 The WESD is thankful for your support.

Lookout Mountain Receives “A” Letter Grade

The WESD is proud to share that eight schools have received an “A” letter grade from the Arizona Department of Education (ADE), including one in the Moon Valley corridor – Lookout Mountain Elementary School. As defined by the ADE, an “A” letter grade or “Excellent” rating means: “distinguished

performance on the statewide assessment, significant student growth, high four year graduation rates, students on track to proficiency; overall performance is significantly higher than state average.” Additionally, Lookout Mountain scored the highest with 92.82 out of 105 points. Overall, the WESD earned a “B” letter grade, and 78% of our schools received an “A” or a “B” rating. The WESD is proud of our schools’ commitment to growth and educational excellence. To learn more and view a complete list of the 2023-2024 WESD school letter grades, please visit: https://www.wesdschools.org/23-24LetterGrades.

I’m Thrifting This Holiday Season!

As a SAHM on a budget, I’ve decided to take my love for treasure hunting

First off, you should know that I have three siblings with 14 nieces and nephews total. Luckily, we do secret Santa to wean down that budget, but I still

And I feel like this is all possible with thrifting, baking, crafting, and anything else that is thoughtfully made. Christmas is not about the price tag, but it’s about thoughtfulness. (Also, with inflation, who couldn’t resist some thrifting?)

The best part is that Moon Valley is a thrifting haven. The Treasure Houses, two Goodwills, a St. Vincent de Paul, and don’t forget all the antique shops

With that, here are ideas from thrift stores that I’m putting in my gift baskets:

1. Set on a budget - My budget is $20 per person. Anytime I go into a thrift store, I will prioritize what’s on sale that day. For example, today was a pink tag sale at Goodwill, so I went all out on the pink tags.

2. Don’t go in with big expectations - I knew that the thrifting gods would serve me if I just focused on what one person wanted. So whenever I was stuck, I asked, “What would Molly want?” And sure enough the most random stuff that my younger sister would love popped out.

3. Find your crafting niche - Thrift stores have plenty of circular glass holders. I tend to choose those and then make homemade candles. In the picture, I only had my tins, but I did infuse the wax with lavender and lemongrass – super relaxing – and there you go. Candlemaking happens to be my hobby, but I’m sure people would love whatever you craft. I plan to do that for my mom – get a super nice crystal glass and put some wax in there. She hates candle smells, but loves the ambiance they provide.

4. Get homemade - With that, there are tons of cheap tins at thrift stores or the dollar store (compared to the $5 price tag at Target - yikes). Fill that up with your favorite homemade Christmas yummies and voila, you have another

I’m really proud of this gift basket that I’ve curated for my younger sister Molly. She works for the county and goes through a ton of emails, so I couldn’t resist this “Professional per my last email sender” mug. She’s going to crack up. Plus, I found this gorgeous Dana Buchman winter cover-up with gold buttons (a pink tag!) and I couldn’t resist. Very classy and very her style for work.

UPCOMING EVENT

Date: 12/15/2024

Time: 2 PM - 5 PM

Both of our restaurants have a vision to bring the long-standing Moon Valley community together through amazing food. Whether that be through participating in community events, donating to charitable causes, or spearheading events, our goals are to integrate into the community that has been so excited and welcoming to our small businesses from the inception of both concepts, Xolo and Bear & the Honey.

During the summer of 2024, we began the preliminary stages of a restaurant week for Moon Valley, kicking off on 602 Day (June 2nd). The week will be full of specials, events, and collaborations with other Moon Valley restaurants. We hope to expand upon the groundwork that was laid last year in 2023.

In December, we will be holding a joint event at both of our spaces. We will be celebrating the holidays by having ornament and cookie decorating stations on our patio as well as a hot chocolate bar. With the purchase of a ticket, the ticket holder will receive one ornament, three cookies, and a cup for the duration of the event.

CENTRAL-mexico INSPIRED FOOD.

Location: Xolo + Bear and the Honey patios 13216 N. 7th Street STE 2 + STE 4, Phoenix, Arizona 85022

Cost: $25 per ticket

Xolo started as a vision between the minds of business and life partners, Kirk Rens and JJ Zarraga, fresh out of Covid era. Where food and family remain the core values of Xolo, these young entrepreneurs made it their mission to extend that spirit of familiarity, vibrancy and comfortability to their customers. It’s not too uncommon to walk into this restaurant and overhear catching up between friends or the boisterous laughter amongst families meeting up once again and hanging out over delicious Central Mexican inspired food. Xolo, in just under 2 years, was recognized by the Arizona Republic for Top 10 Tacos in the Valley, a huge accomplishment that is bringing attention back to the Moon Valley restaurant scene. With a new and exciting flare, Xolo is bringing flavors that stand out in comparison to the Sonoran style cuisine Arizona natives are more privy to. These owners promise fresh and delicious food and cocktails, with an efficient and completely scratch kitchen that always packs a punch of flavor. Their Taco Tuesday & Wednesday is simply unbeatable in the valley offering a whopping 5 tacos and 1 draft beer for just $10!

ALLERGY-CONSCIOUS

BAKERY CAFE & BAR

Bear and the Honey was started by Monique Curry in 2013 after creating recipes for her close friend that was suffering from Celiac Disease. One decade later and it has grown into its second brick and mortar location (they shut down the first after being defrauded out of over $50,000).

“What started as a bakery has become a hybrid bakerycafe-roastery. We plan to be roasting our own coffee by Q1 of 2025,” stated Sam Curry, part owner and Monique’s husband. With the opportunity to serve alcohol, Bear and the Honey has expanded its menu to include happy hour options offered daily from 3 P.M. to 6 P.M. Along with the expanded menu, the chefs and bakers of Bear and the Honey continue to dish out the items that have made them a local favorite in the community that has welcomed them so warmly. Pastries are made fresh daily, syrups for coffee are made in-house, and you will always be greeted with a smile!

At Pet Spa, our stylists have over 10 years experience and practice a no fear way of pampering your beloved pup. We take our time with one on one appointments that are limited to a small amount of pups coming through our doors on a daily basis. They are never put in a cage. This approach allows for a calm stress free environment for our stylists and the pups we care for.

From start to finish, your pup will be pampered by their own personal stylist. We care about the health of your pup’s skin and coat and use luxury products hand mixed to their specific needs. We also give them a relaxing blueberry facial with facial massage that they love. They are towel dried then gently hand blow dried. They are then given a mani/pedi, ear cleaning, teeth enzyme spray, face, feet, and sanitary trim with a cut and style to your liking. They leave us happy, looking great, smelling amazing, and so soft to the touch. We do things di erently here and strive for the health and happiness of the furry members of your family.

4 Ways to Help Keep the Holiday Pounds Off

DC

First there is Thanksgiving then a full array of end-of-season holidays are right around the corner, promising a month or more of cheer, goodwill toward all ... and plenty of opportunity for gorging.

For every teen who gains the “freshman 5” pounds their first year of college, millions more people of all ages gain the “holiday 5” or more as the year comes to a close. Here are five ways to help keep the holiday pounds off this year while still enjoying your favorite holiday foods:

1. Walk Away:  Good advice for any eating situation, but particularly the variety featuring a near-endless array of choices and plenty of time to indulge, is to know when to walk away; when to tell yourself, “OK, I’m done.” Too many people treat Thanksgiving, for example, as a day-long meal and find themselves packing on the pounds. Combined with abundant leftovers for days afterward and the fact that other big holiday celebrations await, you’ve got a recipe for weight disaster. Enjoy a good meal, try a few things you might not normally eat, but don’t overdo it. Know when to walk away and return to your normal diet and exercise regimen, or before you know it, you’ll be off the wagon and have to make weight loss your New Year’s resolution.

2. Walk It Off: Walking is a fundamental form of fitness that doesn’t require anything except a good pair of shoes and an open road / field / path. It’s also a great way to facilitate digestion following a meal, particularly a filling one, and will burn calories in the process. In fact, walking in all forms – while shopping for holiday gifts, bonding with relatives / friends, etc. – can help fight holiday weight gain.

3. No Grazing Allowed: It might look like a buffet, but you don’t have to treat the holiday meal like one. There’s a difference between enjoying a variety of foods and heaping plate after plate with calorie- and fat-laden fare that’s sure to weigh you down. Fill your plate, leave some room for dessert and a few “second tasters” of things you liked the first time around, but then call it a meal and move on. Just because the food’s still on the table doesn’t mean you’re obligated to eat it. Think it terms of normal meals and you’ll avoid endless grazing that adds up to an overstuffed belly and scale.

4. A Time of Sharing: If the holidays are about one thing, it’s celebrating with friends, family and loved ones. In many cases, you have the opportunity to spend time with people you might not have seen all year or longer. That’s the spirit of the holidays, not the food. So enjoy a good meal, to be sure, but spend most of your time enjoying the company of those who matter most and you’ll enjoy a guilt-free, healthy holidays that keeps you in shape and ready to roll next year!

We want to alert you to a new law requiring you to provide information about “beneficial owners” of your LLC, corporation or partnership on a report called the Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) report. You must report the beneficial owners of your business entities on-line at: https://www.fincen. gov/boi. More on how to file later in this article.

When do you have to file?

• For an entity formed in 2024, you have 90 days to file the BOI.

• For a business that existed prior to January 1, 2024, you have until January 1, 2025 to complete the report.

• Updated reports are required when certain information changes, and those updates are due within 30 days of the change.

PENALTIES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE

The penalties for failing to comply are stiff – civil or criminal penalties of up to $500 per day may be imposed for failure to comply with the law.

Why was this law enacted?

The purpose of this law is to give law enforcement information on the people who control companies, to reduce money laundering and other nefarious activities. The law is aimed at small businesses, while big businesses and financial institutions and entities (who have their own reporting requirements) are exempt. The law requires reporting for all business entities, including one as small as an LLC you may have created for your rental properties.

Who is a beneficial owner?

Who qualifies as a beneficial owner is not always easily determined. You may need to include on your report entities or individuals you would not initially consider “owners.” A married person in a community property state

like Arizona needs to report their spouse as a beneficial owner as well, even if they don’t own the company. A manager of your LLC and a corporate officer of a corporation are both beneficial owners, even if they do not own the company, and they must be included in the report.

Getting started on the filing

For do-it-yourself types, start with the FAQs at the FinCEN.gov website. In addition, you can download the Small Entity Compliance Guide here: https://www.fincen.gov/boi/small-entity-compliance-guide

These documents answer questions about whether you need to file or are an exempt entity, when you need to file, and who to include as a beneficial owner.

Obtaining the necessary information for your beneficial owners and filing the report

For each beneficial owner, you will need a social security number and a copy of their driver’s license or passport to upload for the BOI report, as well as full legal names and dates of birth. An easy way to obtain this information is to have each beneficial owner create their own FinCEN Identification number. Once they have done so, you can file the report and simply identify the other beneficial owners by way of their FinCEN ID. To file the report, go here: https://boiefiling.fincen.gov/

Not a do-it-yourself type?

If you need assistance in filing the report, contact your business attorney or your CPA or look for online assistance with the filing. We have had clients use Morgan Wyatt LLC, found at https://morganwyatt.com/.

Does your estate plan address your business interests?

A complete estate plan will include your business interests or LLCs in some form. If you need an estate plan or want a review and update, call our office at 602-375-6752 and our team can assist you.

If Candles Could Talk

There is an old Yiddish saying “When you light the Chanukah candles listen closely to their whisper”. The candles don’t merely burn; they sing of resilience, hope, and an ever-brightening future. Each flame dances with a message—that even the smallest light can banish overwhelming darkness

The story of Chanukah is one of perseverance against overwhelming odds. The Maccabees, a small and determined group, triumphed over a mighty empire, proving that courage and conviction can overcome even the most daunting challenges. Their victory is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and our ability to rise above adversity.

Today, as we face challenges large and small, the menorah reminds us that hope is never lost. Just as one small jar of oil burned for eight miraculous days, small acts of goodness, kindness, and faith can ignite change far beyond what we imagine.

Chanukah teaches us to look forward with optimism. Each new candle represents the growing light within us and around us. It challenges us to spread positivity and create ripples of brightness in our communities. As the menorah grows brighter each night, so can our vision for a better world.

We invite you to join in celebrating at the annual Chanukah Festival in Moon Valley Park. Come experience the warmth of community with live music, a fire-juggling show, holiday crafts, and delicious latkes and donuts. The event is free and open to all, taking place on Sunday, December 29, from 4–6 PM. For details and RSVP, visit JewishMoonValley.com/Festival Let’s light up Moon Valley together.

Hiding in Plain Sight

MOON VALLEY MAGIC

It’s that time of year to be hiding things, whether it’s the fudge or the presents. I’ve learned over the years that hiding in plain sight is the absolute easiest thing to do around these men.

When Jon was a toddler I could distract him and put his presents right in the shopping cart. It was ridiculously easy to do. I’d then ask the cashier to stash the gifts back under the cart while I distracted him again. Once we got to the truck, I’d get him safely buckled inside and load the bags in the back. After he was napping, I’d take the bags inside and hide them. It got trickier with multiple children of course. Since Santa has never done the stockings at our house, I could wrap presents behind a locked door and not be disturbed because they thought I was wrapping the stocking stuffers. Playing games like hide and seek was not allowed in our bedroom or my sewing room. Therefore I could stash presents in both. The closets were a safer spot, as they never went in them, and still don’t. Once in a while Pete and Linda across the street hid the big stuff for us. Having wonderful neighbors is a must when you have small children.

Now that Santa doesn’t visit our house anymore, I wrap the gifts and pile them up in the guest room. Each family member has their own gift wrap, so I don’t need a ‘who to’ and no one bothers the growing pile. We are not a family of nosy ‘peek ahead’ people. I’ve heard of folks unwrapping gifts to get a peek ahead of time and then rewrap, but that spoils all the fun in the surprise and none of us ever cared to do that. I hide lots of things in plain sight, some things like the bread and ketchup aren’t being hidden on purpose, but they may as well be. They are in plain sight!

WEDNESDAYS

The Science And The Season Of Giving Contribute To Collective Well-Being

We are blessed in Moon Valley to be surrounded by good-hearted friends and loved ones. This holiday season, Moon Valley Chiropractic is happy to partner with our patients, Sally and Fred Cohill, on behalf of the neighborhood Arizona 501c3 non-profit Skyline Wish Builders, which has been working since 2011 to ensure Christmas gifts for local children. Through Friday, December 20th, we will collect donated new, unwrapped toys (up to $25 in value, no electronics or books) in our office lobby. Wish Builders Volunteers will gather, wrap, and distribute the gifts to qualified local partner schools for families in need to experience the Spirit of Christmas.  Popular items are STEM kits, building blocks, cars, dolls, sensory sets, and similar choices for ages birth through 18. You may learn more about our partner organization at www.skylinewishbuilders.com

The holiday season is swirling around us, and we may find our thoughts spinning with ideas about the gifts we want to share. The act of giving, in itself, is well known to have the capacity to boost one’s heart and mind. The warm, fuzzy feeling we may experience by offering gifts, time, and support to family and friends, volunteering for organizations, or donating to charities is not just some “good vibe” theory.  There’s research behind it.  Many studies show that giving can boost physical and mental health.

In a recent article published by The Cleveland Clinic, Susan Albers, PsyD, acknowledges the scientific basis of these benefits. “When we do things for other people, it makes us feel more engaged and joyful,” and “That’s good for our health and happiness.” A biological reaction occurs in response to doing something nice. The brain releases “feel-good” chemicals such as Oxytocin (known to cultivate a sense of bonding with others), Serotonin (known to enhance mood, cognition, and learning), and Dopamine (known to influence one’s sense of reward and pleasure). Dr. Albers went on to share additional insights.

-Volunteers tend to enjoy a longer lifespan than those who don’t.

-Protects the heart and lowers blood pressure, with benefits similar to diet and exercise.

-Reduces cortisol levels, attenuating stress hormones.

-Stimulates the brain’s mesolimbic pathway (reward center) while releasing endorphins.

-Contributes to a sense of accomplishment, also known as “helper’s high.”

-Elevates happiness, increases self-esteem, and reduces sense of depression.

Even better, Dr. Albers observed that many of the best gifts are free. She highlights, “Acts of service often reflect the most thought and care and can be more meaningful than anything you purchase.” This idea encompasses anything that helps another or makes their life easier. Some ideas include pitching in with house chores, pets, childcare, or technology, tapping into your creative talents to deliver good foods or baked goods, assembling a floral bouquet, or putting together a personal scrapbook highlighting special memories. Another bonus of homemade gifts is that they can often be budget-friendly.

Amid the Holiday hustle and bustle, nurturing the most crucial recipient on your list, yourself, is also essential. It is vital to remember your routine wellness care and chiropractic visits to ensure you will be well-prepared to participate in all that the holiday season offers. Please call us at 602-298-0292 to schedule your chiropractic appointment or stop by to deliver your donations and learn about our seasonal specials. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

Moon Valley Women’s Club

Charitable Season

It’s the holiday season and the members of Moon Valley Women’s Club (MVWC) have been busy giving back to the community. Three small grants were awarded this fall. In addition, at a Moon Light Mixer event, members decorated and filled treats for Halloween bags for a local school. The Holiday Adoption Project kicked off, and a Literary Tea Fundraiser was recently held.

These fundraising events are part of the MVWC Service Project, the nonprofit arm of the Club. The Holiday Adoption Project has been around for several years and members all pitch in to help by adopting families. Forty families are chosen from Sunnyslope and Moon Mountain Elementary with the help of social services. The volunteers then shop for them based on their individual family wish list. These gifts are then delivered to the families by mid-December just in time for Christmas.

The Moon Valley Chapter of the National Charity League partnered with MVWC at the Literary Tea Fundraiser held in November. Donated books were collected for Sunnyslope K-8. In addition, a book sale at the Tea helped raise some extra funds for the Service Project.

A holiday luncheon is planned for December when Service Project members will gather and plan for future events where they can give back to the community.

Happy Holiday Season to Our Moon Valley Neighbors!

Perfect Gifts

This is the season when many people spend tremendous energy and money on gift giving. So what is the “perfect gift” and how much does it cost? In this time of economic challenge, there are a host of alternative gifts that are sure to fit your budget and heart. While inexpensive to give, they are also ‘priceless’ in value.

The Gift of Your Time: Being with someone, giving them your undivided attention, is perhaps one of the most precious, priceless gifts you can offer. You could put a puzzle together with a child or go for a walk with a friend or visit someone in a nursing home. Whatever you choose, you are creating in a memory of caring and sharing.

The Gift of Listening: Good listeners are rare treasures. You have an opportunity to allow someone to tell their story and pay full attention to them. This means no interruptions, no chiming in with your story…only listening to theirs and asking questions for more details. I once heard of a man who was described as being extremely wise. When asked what he did what was so wise, I was told, “He listens well.”

The Gift of Your Talent: What do you do well? You don’t need to be perfect, just a cut above some others. Do you make great banana bread? Can you fix a leaky faucet? Could you take a letter for someone unable to see or write anymore? What can you do with ease that you could share with others?

The Gift of Your Smile: Have you noticed the faces of others while you are out and about? Some people seem distracted, frustrated or borderline miserable while going about their daily doings. Offer them your smile – your free gift of encouragement! Make eye contact and connect with a smile and a gleam in your eye. You just might be the person who turns their day around…and it is sure to lift your own spirits along the way.

The Gift of Your Forgiveness: It has been said that refusing to forgive is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Forgiveness is highly personal and should never be forced on anyone. Consider for yourself, is there something that you have carried too long and paid too high a price for? Who could you release from judgment today? Maybe it is yourself.

The Gift of Your Acceptance: Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer someone is to love and accept them – “as is”. We could give the same gift

I thought that I found the absolute treasure with an Abraham and Jerry Hicks “Into the Vortex” book ($22.22 on Amazon) along with “The Secret” ($12.17 on Amazon). My sister and I just went to an Abraham Hicks event in September, and we’re both extremely spiritual.

Last November, she adopted an Irish doodle, so as a “gag gift” I found this “Dreaming in Libro” book where the tagline is “How a Good Dog Tamed a Bad Woman.” I seriously laughed out loud in the store. The Oscar de La Renta dog bowl is actually mine, and it was for my love Bailey, my favorite Golden Retriever from 11 years ago. It’s time to give it away and I couldn’t think of a better person than Molly for her new puppy, Chloe.

Finally, I found a Slytherin shirt from Harry Potter. (She LOVES Harry Potter and Slytherin/Ravenclaw are her houses). I know she’s going to squeal when she gets this.

For Christmas, my family and I are doing cheesy matching pajamas for our Christmas cards and Molly was mentioning that she would love Grinch pj’s. And lo-and-behold there are pink tag Grinch pajamas and a separate Grinch shirt (“This Is My Resting Grinch Face”). Love it.

I will bake some of our late grandmother’s famous Christmas cookies and put them in a tin for her along with including her favorite Kava tea for the cup, but guess how much the thrifting items came to?

$20, rounded up to donate money to children in need. Just within my budget. Double love it. I’ll be documenting more of my holiday thrifting finds on my Instagram, so feel free to follow me at @brighid.constable. Also, tag me so I can follow along with your Christmas shopping wins!

Happy thrifting and Merry Christmas!

to ourselves. Rather than harsh comparisons with others that are inevitably hurtful to someone, what if we allowed ourselves to hold pure, unconditional acceptance of another person…and let them know that?

The Gift of Your Remembrance: This could be a card or call to someone you do not see often with a simple ‘thinking of you’ message. These spontaneous remembrances are some of the sweetest in life. Enclose a story or article of interest or a favorite memory. What a terrific surprise this can be!

The Gift of Your Treasures: What do you have that you are willing to share with another? I’m not talking about donations to the local thrift shop. I mean items of interest or beauty in your home that have given you pleasure and you are now ready to share them with others. If you have things that you want to eventually bequeath to your loved ones, go ahead, give them a gift now so that they can properly thank you and you can live to see them enjoy the treasures!

The Gift of Your Anonymous Good Deed: Do something for someone else – anonymously! Be creative and have fun with this. You could pay for someone’s meal, drop a pot of flowers on someone’s doorstep, wrap one of your favorite books and send without your return address. If you walk early in the morning, you could put driveway thrown newspapers on doorsteps…the list is endless and exciting!

The Gift of Your Appreciation: Make a list of 10 things you appreciate about a specific person and send it to them. Combine personal, serious, and humorous attributes of your friend. I guarantee, this will be one gift that is neither discarded nor forgotten!

EVERYONE has something to give, a gift waiting to be delivered. Be generous and authentic in your giving…someone is waiting…someone needs exactly what you have to offer. As a bonus, it is impossible to give without receiving…enjoy it all.

BMCAINFO.COM IS THE “GO TO” SITE TO FIND FUN AND USEFUL INFORMATION

The Black Mountain Community Alliance newsletter on-line at BMCA. com contains a wealth of information. Laura and Candace, who are the masterminds behind these amazing documents, seek and find the most interesting information to pass on to citizens of this great city.

For instance, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) puts out a list of places to visit around the State. And includes a list of photography forums and contests. People also can adopt a highway cleanup project. Remember seeing people in green vests along roads? They are volunteers cleaning up trash. There are many more volunteer jobs listed.

An article called “Community Cats” informs people about how citizens can help curb the wild cat population by adopting cats and/or turning them into shelters or, at least, having the cats neutered. The newsletter is not only about partnership with the police. It is about coming together to help our communities be good places to live.

Free presentations of how to keep ourselves and our neighbors safe are available on topics like fraud, scams, and identity theft. Also, on-line safety, substance abuse prevention, healthy habits and safety for kids, bullying prevention and residential burglary prevention.

Another item is most interesting. It falls under “Strengthening Communities.” The last item, Number 9, is how to apply to receive (Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) RICO money for community programs. The money is recovered from criminals. Their “loot” is confiscated and re-directed to us! We can be creative in how to help our communities be better and we can have fun in the process.

There are many more interesting articles to review. They represent opportunities to serve in the new year. As Mom said, “Many hands make light work.”

Holidays are Here!

BY LEON OF TRY ME BIKE SHOP

Time to think about a new or used bike for some one. A new light or speedometer given could make someone think of riding the bike more. Just tuning the bike or fixing the flats is a good start for any one. You know the bike its been sitting are hanging in garage for a while.

The one in the back yard is now lawn art frozen in place and time. The tires are flat. The chain is stiff. The wheels are locked tight in place. Weather has taken its toll but it can sit there for another year or two it is lawn art. It can tell of days gone by but it cant speak. You can remember the fun times with that bike. Don’t let your bike sit ride it!

Survey Finds Chick-fil-A is the Top First-Date Choice for Arizona Men

One of the nicest things about going on a date is the prospect of a delicious dinner over which you can get to know each other more deeply. However, times are a little tighter than they might have been a few years ago, and dinner for two somewhere a little bit fancy will likely not leave much change from $100, possibly even $200. Is it acceptable to suggest a first date somewhere cheaper?

DatingNews decided to run a survey of 3,000 men to find out whether any would be happy to trade fine dining for fast dining to dodge the high-cost hurdle of a first date and ask their intended out to a fast food restaurant instead… because, practically speaking, love doesn’t always have to be about champagne and oysters - right?!

The survey found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, over half (54%) of Arizona men would love to be let off the high-cost dating hook and would definitely have no problem taking a woman out on a first date to somewhere like McDonalds. The survey also found that a lot of women would be fine with this! Two-thirds said that if they were asked out on a first date to a fast food restaurant, they would go - after all, it’s all about getting to know someone better, and a lot of the time the portions are bigger in a fast food place than they would be at a fine dining restaurant, so that’s a bonus, too!

DatingNews also wanted to find out exactly what kind of fast food these romantic men would plan to woo their date with: would it be a kiss over a KFC bucket, a Taco Bell serenade, or just a classic McDate? The clear winner among Arizona men was Chick-fil-A - they overwhelmingly picked this chain as their top choice. McDonalds was the next most popular choice. A minority of men from the Grand Canyon State wanted to make their first date feel like a queen - a Dairy Queen, that is, choosing this chain as their third favorite option.

So what on earth might make women more likely to agree to such a budgetfriendly first date? The survey found that 41% said it would be the prospect of good vibes - as long as their partner made it fun. 40% appreciated the honesty of someone who was real about their budget (or lack of it), while 19% were down for something low-cost that still tasted good. And to make it cheaper still, 56% of people would be happy to split the bill at a fast food restaurant with their date.
