What is National Charity League?
National Charity League is a multi-generational philanthropic organization whose mission is “Fostering the mother-daughter relationship through an ongoing commitment to philanthropy, culture and leadership.” Close to three million hours are donated annually to over 6,000 charities within the United States. Each chapter partners with local and national nonprofits to encourage service, self-sacrifice, empowerment, social awareness and compassion. Mothers and daughters serve alongside one another, which strengthens the motherdaughter bond. In this digital, fast-paced age, it is wonderful to see young women step outside of themselves, focus on others and broaden their scope of experience. Focusing outward and helping others gives these young women a sense of pride, satisfaction, compassion and empathy.
Additionally, National Charity League helps to build capable future professionals and leaders through the discovery of various leadership roles within their grade level and their chapter. Interested in money? Become your class Treasurer. Love learning about other cultures? Become your class Cultural VP. Love to write? Try out VP of Communications or class Secretary. Whatever your interest, you’ll find something at NCL. The beauty of NCL is that each girl (also referred to as a Ticktocker - LONG before TikTok existed) will also have opportunities to try many different leadership roles, stepping outside their comfort zones and discovering new strengths, talents and interested.
A large component of what we do is to volunteer our time to local philanthropic organizations. We’ve got something for everyone. If you love animals, volunteer at HARRT. If spending time outdoors or in the garden is something you want to try, then Giving Garden is a great place to start. Do you like cooking and find yourself wanting to be on an episode of “Chopped?” Then Home Base is a place where you can cook up meals for the residents, sometimes with everyone coming together to put together random ingredients for something tasty.
National Charity League, Mooney Valley Chapters’ annual membership drive is November 1, 2023 - January 15, 2024. Mothers and daughters (currently
in 6th grade and up) are encouraged to visit: https://www.nationalcharityleague.org/chapter/moonvalley/ or email membershipmoonvalley@nclonline.org for more information. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NCLincMoonValley Instagram: NCLMOONVALLEY

For those that read my articles, (Gram used to clip them all) you may have remembered this from a few years ago, BUT I found it most appropriate again as I started making my lists for the fall season. Where did summer go? The only good thing is the possible change in weather and cooling down. Enjoy the last dog days of summer vacation.
School is getting ready to start, only 5 months till Christmas, and I still have so many things on my to do list for 2019-2023! I am always trying to find that perfect little notebook to capture all my to do’s, notes, records, and important stuff. Ha, I must have about 50 of them going right now, but they are so cute, and of course if you know me they are also filled with doodles. I don’t lose things, but sometimes it just takes me a bit longer to find them.
I started searching on-line for help in this area, google to-do lists, you see that about 50 million different apps are available to also help in this area. Monday.com, smart sheet, jolt, write, and this list goes on, talk about more work and confusing.
I know I am not alone, most of us have been there, 10 million things to do every day and yet nothing ever seems to get done. List after list and all it feels like is you add and never seem to conquer. Is it time management or something else?
So, I started a little research on what works: first off let me tell you, they say only 11% actually finish what they start out to do. Not the best percentage, but if you want to try to inch your way into the top 10, here are a few tips.
A few of my favorites:
The 1=3=5 Rule: map out one big thing, three medium things, and five smaller things you want to get done that day, you will know where your priorities lie, what can wait, and what cannot. You leave the 3 and 5’s with open holes somedays to work on what might pop up, unavoidable.
Be specific about what each to-do item entails: be realistic about what it will take to get it done, many things are multi step, take longer periods of time and efforts. The long list and the short list as I like to put it.
The Done List : back to my old paper and pens, I love the look of the big X, cross it off, done! It’s a great visual in both respects, looking back over the day, you see all you did and all you did not. I wake-up call that we may need to refocus and rethink what you’re spending your day doing.
So, let’s just start fresh again today, pencil in at least 3 things, we gotta, must, need to get done today, we can do it! Tomorrow we will worry about the rest.

Choosing a Successor Trustee
BY LIBBY BANKS, PLLC, THE LAW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANKS
Do you have the right people or company named as your successor trustee?
One of the most important decisions you can make is who will be taking care of your estate– first for you if you become incapacitated and second for your beneficiaries when you are gone. Here are a few qualities to look for in a successor trustee:
1. Availability to serve. Your sister may be financially savvy, but if she is now having health issues, will she really be able to assist you? Make sure who you pick can do the work of serving as your trustee.
2. Integrity and loyalty. Pick someone who you trust implicitly, someone who you believe would never consider misusing the trust assets.
3. Financial competence and willingness to seek assistance. You might think you need someone business savvy to be your trustee, but more important is having someone who is willing to seek out and listen to good counsel and advice.
4. Sensitivity to your beneficiaries’ circumstances. If your beneficiaries are minors or otherwise in need of an ongoing trustee to manage their inheritance, it is very important that the trustee understand what you want for them and are sympathetic to the beneficiaries’ needs.
5. Knowledge of your assets and/or business interests. Does your trustee know what you own, or can they quickly find out with directions you leave? Do they understand your business or asset distribution? When selecting your trustee, consider what assets you own, and how they will be able to step in to manage those assets.
6. Similar values and attitudes about money. It’s important for a trustee to understand what you want for your beneficiaries in the way of distributions, access to the assets, and opportunities to manage the assets themselves. Similar values ensure your beneficiaries are treated the way you want..
7. Geographic location. With advances in technology and communication, the location of your trustee and beneficiaries may not be so important. However, consider that if you are incapacitated, you may want a trustee who is nearby. You can appoint one trustee for incapacity and a different person for after you pass.
8. Cost and amount of estate assets. Last, you need to consider cost. Banks and trust companies generally charge based on a percentage of the assets under management. Many don’t offer trustee services for estates under $1,000,000 (or more). Private fiduciaries, who are licensed by the state, charge on an hourly basis. While they are often willing to manage smaller estates, many have limitations. A family member or friend may be willing to manage your estate whatever its size. Remember, though, that you should provide compensation for the work the trustee performs, even if they are related to you.
Our office would be happy to assist you in creating your trust plan and selecting the right trustee. Call for a free initial consultation at 602-375-6752.

NATURALIST: AN INTERESTING AND TIMELY READ FOR SUMMER
BY FROSTY KROENING
As a child, Edward O. Wilson steeped himself in his Alabama environment. A nearby swamp provided fascinating animals to collect. He once built a snake “zoo” to study and to share with people. One rattler put him in the hospital. He eventually settled on studying ants; their social lives, protective chemicals, different genetic and behavioral traits. He began a study of fire ant spread in southeast states. Wilson traveled all over the world, often climbing steep mountains for weeks at a time in wild places collecting ants and other insects. He could be perfectly happy sloshing around in swamps, too.
His book, Naturalist, describes his education and job history by sharing information about the other scientists he studied with. Eventually he was invited to be a professor at Harvard. I always wondered what goes on at Harvard! Wilson describes the scientific and theoretical challenges (battles, if you want to call them that). He kept an open mind all along and strived to see the big picture of life on Earth. What makes living beings successful? In the process, he reached out to social science professors and also dove deeply into human genetics. Are there any herding genes in us, for instance. Ants and other living creatures have plenty of such genes.
After decades of work and collaboration with some interesting and characterful scientists, he came to a conclusion that is not 100% shared by everyone. I will leave that discovery to readers.
Wilson won many awards for his work, partly because he adhered to the strictest standards of “scientific method.” Readers of Naturalist will learn about the personalities and challenges of many famous biologists and social scientists and the questions they were trying to answer.
From recent brain studies we know that it is common for people to make up stories to explain the world around us. At the same time, academic communities try to prove or disprove answers to questions about biology, psychology, social structures, and everything in our beautiful world. We still have a lot to learn. It is fascinating to have a window into how the studies are designed and carried out and what they tell us.
A Couple
Every month the chief guru from our company holds what we call a “Roundtable” where he updates us on the latest happenings in the mortgage industry, or things that might influence the mortgage industry. I thought I would pass on a couple of interesting tidbits. This is not meant to be political. If you don’t agree, please don’t shoot the messenger, I’m just relating our bestguess info.
One of the best sources of mortgage type information is CoreLogic. If you are not familiar with them, their blurb on Google includes this bio, “CoreLogic is the trusted source for property intelligence, with deep knowledge of powerful economic, social, and environmental forces that promote healthy housing markets and thriving communities.” I really believe this to be true. I have had several occasions to access CoreLogic, and their info was spot-on.
CoreLogic says that home prices are still rising. They forecast a 4.5% increase in home prices nationally, year to year, from July 2023. Thus, they say, if you are sitting on the fence to buy, you may want to reevaluate. They also go on to say that there is no economic data to show that a crash is coming. As with the stock market, trying to anticipate the absolute bottom before you buy is a risky business. Better to move on with your lives, and be prepared to react if conditions improve materially. In other words, buy now and be prepared to refinance when rates improve.
On a slightly different note, but still important to the mortgage process, Student Loan payments will begin again in October. All COVID restrictions and forbearance will be removed then. If the borrower had an IBR (Income-based repayment) or Forbearance payments in effect before the restrictions were applied, they can still be qualified on that payment if it still applies in October.
If you are thinking about buying, but can’t quite make up your mind if the time is right, get with a trusted mortgage loan officer and get prequalified. This doesn’t cost anything, but at least you know exactly where you stand. This allows you to make a reasoned decision whether or not to proceed.

Eating In and Out
MOON VALLEY MAGIC BY DEBBIE ERBSTOESSER
Gary and I have been making a concerted effort to eat out locally, but we have still missed a few places. With the heat as it is, we haven’t wanted to cook! I was very sad to see that the new Aiello’s and Isa’s Pizza closed. Their buffalo chicken pizza was the best I’ve ever had. Barro’s and MV Grill are old standbys of course and we’re very grateful that they’re right here in the ‘hood and delicious as ever. I am obsessed with il Asilo’s Superbowl dish. (il Asilo is pronounced I. C. Low) I have the rice and beans put on the side for my friend as they are pretty high in carbs and she doesn’t mind, but I don’t miss them one bit. This dish is amazing.
We finally got to experience Xolo Tacos (a xolo is a Mexican hairless dog and pronounced Cho-low). We tried several times to eat there, but the hours aren’t posted and the phone doesn’t have a recording with their hours, even though the website says they’re open…so we kept missing them. The house margaritas are to die for too! Tonya’s pies at Mamma Toledo’s for dessert and Serafina for coffee are always a success. I meet a friend at either of them, to catch up quite frequently. Though Adrienne and I haven’t been there during a cool spell to enjoy sitting outside, some young boys on bikes used the outside table to eat their snacks from Circle K! I loved the community feel of that. Those tables and chairs are meant for their customers, but kids in the ‘hood know they can avail themselves when it’s hot out and no one else wants to sweat while they eat or drink. I love that!
The last place to mention is Debb’s Chips.
That is spelled with double B’s by the way (btw) on purpose. I never go by Deb with one B. . .ever and I don’t have a place… and never will. Gary keeps telling me I should sell my chips and it’s absolutely not happening. I mention it because I’m making them as I race against time to meet the Tattler deadline. . .
“Oi Vay” something my MIL always said and I always found hilarious! I do not make my chips for mass crowds anymore. I did once and never again.
I host my staff Christmas party every year and at the first one I made my chips. Well, someone took more than she could eat and threw my chips away! MY CHIPS! What the heckito!? So never again, and therefore I don’t make them for crowds. Maybe she didn’t like the crunch, or lack thereof? I have no idea.
Gary likes them light, I like them dark. The darker the crunchier and this actually is the cause of more arguments in our marriage than anything else. Funny I know, but I’m the one standing over hot oil for hours (because they ARE time consuming), so I gravitate towards dark.
Rookie Mom: 15 True Parent Confessions from Summer (And Thank Goodness for Back to School!)
BY BRIGHID CONSTABLE
As a parent, you often find yourself doing things you swore you’d never imagine before having kids. These rose-colored ideas are great and all, but let’s face reality: You turn into someone else when you become a parent… especially during the kids’ summer vacation.
So in this spirit, here are some cringe-worthy moments that I actually did this summer with my kids:
1. Brynn (my 6-year-old daughter) had Takis for breakfast almost every day in July.
2. I do laundry every Friday, and it’s usually never folded because it lives in the clean hamper and then into the dirty one once used.
3. Instead of cleaning every formula bottle for my 11-month-old son, I rinse and reuse the bottle. (This is considered disgusting by my husband. Normal for me.)
4. I allowed Brynn to watch regular YouTube kid shows like Ninja Kids and Jordan Matter.
5. We also had a Mommy and Daughter Day where I took her to see Barbie, a PG-13 film. I was super weary about it because I hadn’t vetted it, but it worked out – especially because a ton of the film’s ideas were way over her head.
6. I’ve probably washed my son 30 times in his short life. Now, I just let him bathe with me as a 2 birds and 1 stone deal.
7. The kids always turn the house into a crafts and toy explosion. By the end of the day, I have a good intention to clean it up, but let’s face it: the mess will always be recreated the next day, and I am exhausted and can now watch adult TV. So... I tidy up probably 4/7 days of the week.
8. I buy Brynn professional makeup at Sephora and let her record pretend TikToks on her iPad. On special occasions, I let her wear makeup in public, though rarely (and never at school).
9. I’ve actually let Brynn do her own versions of those trendy TikTok dances on my account. She crushed the Wednesday one.
10. I bought a ton of TJ Maxx outfits in May, which shrank in the wash while Brynn ALSO went through a growth spurt. Brynn loved showing off her belly, so I let her wear the shirts like that on vacation. And yes, inside the house if we are doing nothing that day.
11. Actually, my kids have been in their birthday suit for the majority of summer. And if you’re an Arizona native, you probably did this yourself as a kid.
12. I honestly don’t have my son wear a bib anymore. I’m okay if he gets messy.
13. Now that Brynn is 6, she officially has a debit card. With that, she’s been extremely motivated to earn money, so one of her chores is to “babysit.” This babysitting is basically putting the two kids into a Pack and Play for 30 minutes with soft toys so I can sneak in a quick nap.
14. I buy my kids what they want after saying she needs to save up for it. This is a bad habit I really want to crush. I’ve been doing it to avoid tantrums, but it’s a total pick your battle situation.
15. And the worst one: I called my daughter a “brat” to her face after a super public meltdown at Costco. I felt total guilt for doing that even if it was true at the moment. No matter how much gentle parenting I try to practice, there’s always the inevitable frustration. I’m told that the most important thing you can do in that situation is practice your own self-regulation through an emotional period, so that your child can see it modeled and practice themselves.
I just want to thank all the amazing teachers who are working hard to create a memorable and educational 2023-24 school year. Good luck to all students who are ready to rock this year. And to all parents, you may now take a nap!
Brighid Constable is a Tempe, Arizona native with an RPG-loving husband, a wild daughter in first grade, a forever-smiling baby son, and a rescued cat and dog. When she’s not editing digital media, she is dancing to Sofi Tukker on a road trip up north or falling down the Mindy Kahling television rabbit hole. She has written for Hello Giggles, Scary Mommy, and Phoenix magazine, among others.

Building a Joy Culture
As I’m writing for this August issue of the Tattler, there’s one week left in July. At Shadow Rock, we take July off as a time for rest and re-creation. It’s a gift that we give to our leadership, our volunteers, our staff, and our congregation.
So in this last week of Sabbath time, what is primarily on my mind is anticipating the joy of being back with my spiritual community. With our society and culture changing in so many ways, it can feel like there’s a shrinking population of people who are seeking intentional faith communities. In the midst of this sea of change, I lean on my church family and the encouragement they give me. They remind me about joy. We’ll gather for worship on August 6 (at 10:15 am - you’re invited!) after this month apart. There will be a lot of hugging and maybe some sharing of vacation pictures. We’ll raise our voices in song together. We’ll celebrate the ups and downs of real life with one another. Week after week, we’ll be together, being real with each other, building a beloved community - God’s Dream for the planet - right here in North Phoenix.
Now I love big holidays with church folks… the sparkle of Christmas, the mystery of Easter, the lifegiving back and forth of the spiritual seasons. But there’s nothing quite like the joy of the first Sunday of August.
Moon Valley friends, where are you finding joy in these times? How are you savoring it and sharing it? Your Shadow Rock neighbors are sending you grace and peace.
Karen Richter is the Director of Spiritual Formation at Shadow Rock United Church of Christ, an Open and Affirming congregation whose core values are inclusion, justice, and spirituality.
Biking is still fun in summer!
BY LEON TRY ME BIKE SHOP
With the great Phoenix heat, biking can be a challenge. There is a way around. Ride early or late when the sun is setting. Drink lots of water. I drink about gallon and a half on a 4 hour ride. Don’t forget lights even in the day. Sometimes getting away to somewhere cooler- up north perhaps- is the answer. Summer riding can be done; takes a little planning. Looking at great bike rides on YouTube can spur you on to take that ride in the heat. Ragbrai is a 462 mile ride across Iowa, is done in 7 days. Tour de France is a bike race across France 2400 miles. This race takes 23 days. The challenge is taking the time and planning!
Just Ask Julie
BY JULIE PEK
It’s the dog days of summer and Tattler reader Terry and I talked about how our pets suffer too. Generally when temperatures reach above 89 degrees Fahrenheit, it is too hot for our furry friends, so avoid exercising them when it gets that hot. If you can’t tolerate walking on the pavement, think how your pet feels, so limit their time outdoors. Here are ways to help keep them cool:
• Keep your pet hydrated. Make sure their water bowl is constantly filled with fresh water and add ice cubes to keep the temperature cooler.
• Use an elevated or cooling bed. Keeping your pet elevated helps air flow around them and keeps them cooler.
• Give frozen treats and toys. Check out pet-friendly frozen treats – chicken broth popsicles is one idea. Put their toys (rubber kongs for example) in the freezer for a few hours and give them a real treat!
• Use cooling vests, or bandanas, especially when they are outdoors.
• Fans in the house help and if you crate your pet, consider adding a pet crate fan.
• Never leave your pet in a parked car. Yes, we need to be reminded of this.
If your pet shows any sign of stress during this heat, consult with your veterinarian immediately.
Let’s keep our pets safe and cool this summer – we still have a few months of the Arizona heat to go! Contact me if you have questions about real estate at juliepek@cox.net or (602) 316-1875

Meet Barb Nicholls and Dina Taylor: Two Arizona natives with a passion for fitness
Barb has lived in Moon Valley for six years, and joined the Moon Valley Women’s Club shortly after moving to the neighborhood. She leads one of the Club’s hiking groups, and also belongs to the gardening and wine tasting groups. Barb’s passion for fitness through the years and the feeling she got while working out in a small gym in Ohio inspired her to look for a fitness club of her own. At her suggestion, her husband Bill began looking at gym franchises. On their wedding anniversary in 2016 they signed a franchise agreement with Anytime Fitness and began scouting possible locations. In July 2016 she quit her 30 plus year job with JP Morgan Chase, trading in her high heels for tennis shoes and never looked back. They opened the Moon Valley location of Anytime Fitness in November 2016. Fast forward seven years later, and the couple is now enjoying their second retirement after selling the gym to three of their personal trainers.
In addition to working out at Anytime Fitness, Barb loves to learn about plants and nutrition. She is currently working on her third certification through Precision Nutrition. She also enjoys meeting new people, learning new things and using the skills she had learned over the years to create an inviting atmosphere at Anytime Fitness.
Dina first joined Anytime Fitness after winning a gift certificate at a Moon Valley Women’s Club fundraising auction in 2019. Her passion for fitness started early in life. She loved to dance as a child, and competed in cheerleading and track and field through high school and college. This officially started her journey into weight training and becoming an official gym rat for life. After various jobs in entertainment and corporate education and training, she decided to take a break and focused on raising her kids. Around 2016, the opportunity to get certified as a group fitness instructor kept coming up and she decided it was time to pursue fitness as a career and has never looked back! Barb and Bill were an easy fit with Dina’s personality, and with this new relationship and her membership at Anytime Fitness, she got certified as a personal trainer. She has since continued her fitness education and specializes in Senior Fitness. In case you were wondering, yes she is one of the three personal trainers who purchased the gym from Barb and Bill. Having the couple as mentors in this process has made it a smooth transition, and
Dental Bridges
Have you ever been to the dentist and heard them say you need a “bridge? If you’re like most patients you might say to yourself, what is a dental bridge?
Dental bridges are permanent fixtures containing natural-looking teeth that are held in place by your adjoining teeth. Most patients are good candidates for the conventional fixed dental bridge, or a bridge involving minor modifications of teeth existing on either side of the empty socket. However, the teeth used to support the bridge need to be healthy and firmly implanted in equally healthy gums. A dentist experienced with fixed bridges in the greater Phoenix area will perform a thorough dental examination prior to recommending a bridge type addressing your unique needs.
When back molars are missing, your dentist may install a cantilever bridge that needs only need one tooth to which the bridge is permanently affixed. Missing front teeth are sometimes replaced with “Maryland” or resin-bonded bridges that demand minimal modification of existing teeth. Maryland bridges depend on resin material to hold the bridge in place since front teeth are not placed under the level of chewing stress to which molars are subjected.
What Types of Bridges Can I Get at Your Arizona Offices?
A bridge is similar to a crown in that it restores missing tooth structure. The major difference is that a bridge restores one or more missing or damaged teeth between existing teeth. There are several types of dental bridges and the dentist is prepared to discuss the best option to fit your individual needs. The most popular type of bridge is the traditional bridge, which is constructed from a metal base that has porcelain layered on top of it to give it a natural tooth look. This type of bridge consists of two crowns that are supported by teeth and are on both sides of a missing tooth. An artificial tooth is attached to the anchor teeth creating a bridge. Filling the gap can be done by one or more teeth.
If you have any questions about your oral health, please feel free to give us a call over at AZ Family Dental. (602)922-5969.
Dina is extremely proud to be an Anytime Fitness owner!
Dina has been a part of many activity groups in the Moon Valley Women’s Club, such as volunteering with the Service Project and attending one of the book groups. She also enjoys attending the monthly luncheons when she is not working. Dina loves to travel with her family, and Scotland has been a favorite destination. She also stays very busy with her teenagers and pet bulldogs, as well as helping to care for the needs of her parents. Dina’s favorite season is summer because her favorite way to work out is in the pool!

Local Invention Keeps Pools
Crystal Clear During Monsoon Season
Arizona monsoon season is characterized by intense rainfalls, powerful winds, and sand storms that create maintenance challenges for swimming pool owners. Ariel 3.0, a solar-powered pool skimming robot from a Tempe-based tech company, makes it easier to maintain an ultra-clean and healthy swimming pool during storms. Built to withstand many climates, Ariel autonomously patrols the pool surface to remove debris that have been blown or flooded in. In the absence of sun exposure, Ariel operates with stored energy for up to 14 hours to maintain clean and healthy water.
“My pool cleaning robot totally crushed a recent monsoon storm!” said Patrick. “This morning I came out to find Ariel full, and my pool barely looked like a dust storm had come through eight hours ago. She had skimmed everything up from my neighbor’s tree so that I could swim laps in my pool as if no storm had come through at all.”
Constant surface skimming during a storm prevents debris buildup, water contamination, and altered water chemistry. Especially during this unique season, Ariel empowers pool owners to swim more, clean less and save money on chemicals, energy, and repairs. In addition to leaves and dirt, the unit effortlessly maneuvers to remove insects, hair and more. Ariel owners discover extended life on other pool cleaning equipment, and enjoy a net-free world, less bacteria and algae growth, less filtration and sanitization requirements, and 60% less pool pump runtime.
“Our latest pool cleaning device allows pool owners to fully embrace the beauty of Arizona’s monsoons while keeping their pools healthy and inviting,” said Paul Sim, Vice President of Pivot Pool Products. “The average pool owner lacks the time and energy to hand-skim after a storm, but the act of constant skimming is the absolute key to a clean pool. Ariel makes a tough job look effortless.”
Ariel is sold at www.solar-breeze.com. Use code “surprise” for $100 off. You can also find Ariel at some of your favorite pool product retailers throughout Arizona.

Back-to-school Backpack Safety Tips
By Jena Ritchie, Moon Valley Chiropractic
School is starting back this month, which means the beginning of new routines for kids and families. New clothes, school supplies, and backpacks are popular purchases for every student. This can raise questions about what to look for to help create a productive learning experience.
It looks nice. We just have a few changes. On the top take o the x rays because we are not doing that right now.

Every year, healthcare providers treat thousands of children for preventable health conditions relating to poor-fitting backpacks. However, with knowledge and preparation, you can equip yourself and your child with the best experience possible while toting around all the extra books and supplies between classes and home. Read further for tips and tools to choose the best backpack.
- Look for wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back
-Wear both shoulder straps and a waist belt if present. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles.
-Pack light and only carry the minimum number of items needed.
-The backpack’s weight, when filled, should not be more than 10% to 20% of the student’s body weight.
-Arrange the backpack using its compartments to distribute weight and bulk more evenly, packing heavier items closest to the center of the back.
-Lift the backpack properly by bending at the knees, not the waist.
-Choose backpacks with zippers and closures that prevent contents from spilling.
- Go through contents with your child weekly, removing unneeded items to minimize clutter and reduce the weight of the backpack
-Adjust the pack so that it sits evenly across the back toward the bottom of the child’s waist for proper placement
-If the school allows, consider a rolling backpack for extra heavy loads. This type of backpack may be a desirable choice in certain situations when permitted but can also be difficult to navigate with stairs and crowded hallways.
Moon Valley Chiropractic wishes good health, good memories, and good experiences to all children and families headed back to school this year. We hope these tips help make the school year easier and more injury-free. We will be here to provide your family with chiropractic care should the need arise. Simply call our office at 602.298.0292

Back to School Help Wanted
In just a couple short weeks, kids will be returning to the classroom, and several K-12 schools in the Moon Valley-area are scrambling to fill job positions in child nutrition. If you would like a job that helps serve your community and enjoy being around children, consider applying for one of the many openings available right now. While experience in food service is a plus, it’s not required. Training is provided to ensure staff succeed on the job.
For over 30 years, I worked in PV Schools as the director of nutrition and wellness, and I know very well how challenging those first couple weeks of school can be, especially when schools are short-staffed and are having difficulty hiring and retaining good help.
The two primary school districts servicing Moon Valley are Paradise Valley Unified School District, a K-12 district with an enrollment of 30,000, and Washington Elementary School District, with an enrollment of 20,000 students. They have a combined total of over 70 schools and provide 42,000 breakfast and lunch meals per day. They also offer supper meals and after-school snacks to students, with over 50% of them free or reduced. In many families today, both parents work full time or students may come from single-parent
Join
households and rely on schools to provide daily breakfast and lunch. Feeding students requires a tremendous amount of coordination and a staff of dedicated employees.
PV Schools and Washington Elementary have openings for part time (15 to 25 hours per week) and full time (35 to 40 hours per week). Salary starts at $14 per hour and positions are available at multiple schools. Uniforms and free lunch are provided.
• Full-time positions include the following benefits:
• Participation in the Arizona State Retirement plan
• Paid Sick/Personal Time
• Medical insurance
• Optional Dental/Vision insurance
Typically, shifts run from 6am to 2pm during the school week, with no worries of ever having to work weekends or evenings. If you’re interested in working with K-8 students, Washington Elementary holds job fairs every Tuesday for nutrition helpers, clerks, unit leaders and managers.
You can apply at 12641 North 39th Avenue from 9 to 10 am or call (602) 896-5238 for more information or to schedule an interview. If you live east of Central Ave. or would like to work with high school students, PV Schools has 14 openings. They are located at 20621 North 32nd Street. To schedule an appointment, call (602) 449-2274.
If you’re looking for a part-time or full-time job in your neighborhood that helps support the community, please apply for one of these jobs today.

Support a Worthy Cause at The Children’s Treehouse Foundation Charity Golf Tournament
On Course for CLIMB ® is looking for golfers to play in the fall tournament at Papago Golf Club.
Coming off the heels of its successful pickleball tournament at Moon Valley Country Club last spring, The Children’s Treehouse Foundation is holding a fundraiser for people who like swinging at a different kind of ball. Mark your calendar for Thursday, September 14, and join us at the prestigious Papago Golf Club in Phoenix. On Course for CLIMB will make a significant difference in the lives of children whose parents are battling cancer, while giving golfers a memorable day on the greens.
Hosted by The Children’s Treehouse Foundation, a 501c nonprofit, this event will raise money for the Foundation’s CLIMB program (Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery). The Foundation partners with hospitals and cancer centers to provide CLIMB to children and teens who are facing the emotional challenges of having a parent undergoing cancer treatment. By participating in the tournament, you’ll be helping these kids find solace, strength, and understanding during this difficult time in their lives.
The cost to participate is $600 per foursome. Papago Golf Club, located at 5595 E Karsten Way in Phoenix, is the perfect backdrop for this charitable event. This renowned course offers a challenging yet picturesque experience, sure to delight golfers of all skill levels. The tournament is a four-golfer scramble with a shotgun start at 7:30am.
In addition to the tournament, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction with plenty of great prizes, all benefiting The Children’s Treehouse Foundation’s cause.

Why It’s So Hard to Keep It Off
BY NICHOLAS WARNER, DC
The weight, that is. While weight loss can be a struggle for many people, maintaining weight loss is a universal challenge. In fact, in a research analysis of 29 studies on weight loss maintenance, subjects regained more than half of lost weight within two years and 80% did so within five years. In other words, it’s hard to keep it off, pure and simple.
One clue to understanding why it’s so hard comes from a new study that suggests the brain responds differently to the presence of food in the stomach if you’re obese – even if you eventually lose weight. Specifically, obese people experience reduced activity in areas of the brain that normally signal someone that they’ve eaten and should stop eating. In the absence of those signals, overeating is the obvious result.
The study compared two groups: those with a healthy body weight and those considered obese. Losing weight did not appear to correct the problem; according to the researchers, “Importantly, the impaired neuronal responses are not restored after diet-induced weight loss.” Findings appear in a recent issue of Nature Metabolism.
So, what’s the solution? How can people lose weight – and keep it off long term, if these blunted signals exist – and can’t be “fixed” even after weight loss? Step #1 is recognizing the reality: It’s hard to keep weight off, and this is a big reason why. Step #2: In light of #1, recognizing that meal planning / portion sizing is incredibly significant if you’re obese or have ever been obese.
Your brain won’t tell you to stop eating (at least not as well as if you’d never had a weight challenge), so you need to create circumstances that dictate when to stop – based on what’s considered a healthy amount of food to lose weight or maintain that weight loss, depending on your individual circumstance. Your doctor can tell you more about how to design an effective, sensible plan to help you achieve long-term weight loss.
