F Claire Boucher, alias Grimes, est considérée comme l’une des « next big things » sur la scène musicale internationale. La chanteuse d’électro pop canadienne, fille-enfant qui rêvait d’être sorcière, a créé son personnage mi-tribal, mi-ésotérique il y a une dizaine d’années à Montréal. Elle a sorti en novembre 2015 son quatrième album, Art Angels.

Désormais installée à Los Angeles suite au succès de Visions paru en 2012, la chanteuse de vingt-huit ans est une artiste complète : brindille troublante à la voix haut perchée, multi-instrumentiste et productrice, elle réalise avec son frère des clips au moins aussi extravagants que ses looks, entraînant le public dans de véritables odyssées visuelles, sur une musique à la fois dansante et éthérée.

E Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, has made a mark as one of the next big things on the international music scene. The childhood dream of this Canadian electro-pop singer was to become a witch, and she created her esoteric, otherworldly persona a decade ago in Montreal.

In November 2015 she released her fourth album Art Angels. Based in Los Angeles since 2012’s Visions, this 28-year-old musician is a complete artist : vertiginous vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, along with her brother she films videos at least as extravagant as her looks, taking the audience on epic visual journeys accompanied by ethereal music in perpetual motion.

F A-t-on raté sa vie si on n’a pas découvert le Montreux Jazz Festival à cinquante ans ? Il s’en est fallu de peu, en ce qui me concerne, qu’elle soit ruinée à jamais. Quelques semaines. Après un rendez-vous manqué avec Prince l’année précédente, ce sera donc pour 2014. Avec un objectif avoué : Stevie Wonder ! Deux jours durant, le brassage d’images, de sons, de sensations, sera permanent. De questions aussi. Comment une si paisible « station balnéaire » a-t-elle pu se muer ainsi en capitale mondiale du jazz et de la musique en général ? Et dans la foulée un regret qui monte, celui de ne jamais avoir croisé ne serait-ce que deux minutes le responsable de tout ça, parti dix-huit mois plus tôt et pourtant toujours aussi omniprésent, Claude Nobs. Un autre rendez-vous manqué, quoi…

Brassage d’émotions donc. Et de sourires aussi.

Sourires en découvrant comment la presse locale a sorti la sulfateuse au niveau des superlatifs dans ses gros titres : « Stevie Wonder joue ce soir en héros vaillant d’un âge d’or ». Fallait quand même oser… Sourires en entendant la bronca de l’Auditorium Stravinski à l’acoustique si impressionnante parce que maître Stevie a dix minutes de retard par rapport à l’horaire prévu (ok, il y en aura quarante-cinq au total).

Ah, la précision suisse… Sourires de plaisir en se disant qu’il faudra revenir. Et vite !

TODAY'S GUEST E Have you thrown away your life if you only discover the Montreux Jazz Festival at fifty ? Mine was very close to being over forever. It was saved by a matter of weeks. As I’d missed Prince in concert the year before, my discovery was postponed to 2014. For Stevie Wonder of course. The mix of images, sounds and sensations were constant for two days. I kept wondering how a lakeside resort managed to become the world’s capital for jazz and music. I only regretted not having had the chance to meet, for even two minutes, the man behind it all before he died eighteen months ago. I definitely felt I had missed something else special, given I could still feel Claude Nobs’ presence everywhere.

I had mixed emotions, but smiles too. I smiled when discovering the local press’ tendency to blow its titles up out of proportion. Writing “ Stevie Wonder was a brave Golden age hero tonight ” is definitely risky. I smiled when I heard the outcry at the acoustically-impressive Stravinski auditorium because master Stevie was ten minutes late (he ended up arriving fortyfive minutes late). That’s Swiss precision for you. I smiled as I told myself I had to come back here, and soon.

Claude Nobs’ miniature train collection is one of the most intriguing in his treasure chest of weird and wonderful tastes at the Picotin. It includes locomotives, sleepers, cargo trains, Japanese bullet trains, CFF prototypes and many more. An avid railway fan, the founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival even treated himself to the ultimate combo. He organised jazz concerts, his passion of above all others, on board a rack rail train travelling through his favourite mountains. Just like adults who do not want to grow up, he kept his dreams close until they became reality.

F Avant Sid Vicious, les Sex Pistols possédaient pour bassiste Glen Matlock, parmi les responsables du barouff sur « Anarchy in the UK » (1976), premier single publié par le cargo punk.

Autre fait de gloire? Et bien, selon l’autobiographie de John Lydon, chanteur des Pistols, c’est encore Glen Matlock qui assura la basse sur Never Mind The Bollocks (1977), album culte pour lequel ce diplômé de la prestigieuse Saint Martins School écrivit également la plupart des titres. Bref, c’est donc une légende du « keupon » britannique que la Rock Cave s’apprête à recevoir ce soir. Un intime d’Iggy Pop (qui l’invitait d’ailleurs sur son album Soldier, 1980) venu offrir un panorama de quarante ans de punk rock.

E Before Sid Vicious came on the scene, Glen Matlock was The Sex Pistols’ bass guitarist, and among those responsible for the racket on the big punk trio’s first single, “ Anarchy in the UK ” (1976). But that’s not all he did.

According to the autobiography of Pistols singer, John Lydon, Glen Matlock also played the bass guitar for Never Mind The Bollocks in 1977. This cult album was also mainly written by the prestigious Saint Martin's School of Art graduate. In other words, the Rock Cave is hosting a British punk legend tonight. Iggy Pop’s close friend, who had also played on the album, Soldier, in 1980, will be presenting a forty-year overview of punk rock.

F Parmi les termes utilisés pour décrire l’essence du Montreux Jazz Festival, « créatif » et « novateur » sont les plus fréquents. En effet, des visiteurs venus du monde entier s’y rejoignent dans un formidable enthousiasme, apportant chacun leur couleur à une région déjà ensoleillée. Il suffit de traverser la foule animée pour constater que les principes qui font le cœur du Festival vont bien au-delà de la musique. Toutes sortes de personnalités et de styles y sont représentés, du vintage aux accessoires chinés sur les quais, en passant par le denim décontracté, quelques fashionistas tirent leur épingle du jeu et font briller Montreux avec leur style unique. Vala, Sara et Dan nous ont fait part de leurs conseils en matière de mode festivalière. « Pensez à porter du lin car il fait chaud ici », « Rehaussez votre tenue avec des plumes ou un chapeau », et surtout, « Assumez votre style, soyez vous-même ».

of the Montreux Jazz Festival. It’s vibrant exuberance welcomes attendees from all over the world, each of whom bring distinct flavour to an already-glowing region. After walking through the bustling crowd, it’s apparent that the ideals rooted in the festival’s heart and soul go well beyond music. It can be used to classify individual characters and trends.

From vintage wear and casual denim, to accessories acquired right here on the promenade, we’ve found a select few fashionistas who’ve made Montreux shine with their unique style. These casually chic concertgoers had a few “ fest fashion ” tips to share as well (from left to right : Vala, Sara and Dan) : “ wear linen because it gets hot here ”; “ try some hair accessories, feathers or a hat ”; and above all else, “ just be free and be yourself ”.

Bière à la main, le folkeux de Philadelphie a répondu à nos questions avant un concert cent pour cent rock au Lab en compagnie de Mac DeMarco et des Allah-Las. Propos recueillis par Steve Riesen

F Comment se passe votre séjour à Montreux ?

Parlons de ce qui ne me plaît pas, ça sera plus simple. Neil Young joue ici demain et je vais manquer ça ! C’est Lukas Nelson, ma nouvelle idole en matière de guitare, qui l’accompagne sur sa tournée. J’adore ce qu’il fait avec The Promise of the Real.

Vous avez pu rencontrer Neil Young récemment, racontez-nous…

C’était nullissime, horrible ! Non, je rigole, c’était incroyable. Je l’ai vu une dizaine de fois en concert, et je lui ai dit qu’il n’avait jamais aussi bien joué et que « Down by the River » m’avait transporté à la fois dans l’espace et dans l’underground. Il m’a répondu : « Oh yeah, l’espace, on y va quand on veut. » Je crois qu’il s’en fichait un peu.

Parlons de votre musique, qu’est-ce qui vous inspire pour écrire vos paroles ?

J’essaie d’être aussi honnête que possible, tout en restant un peu psychédélique. Parfois, les mots claquent bien ensemble, tout simplement.

Quand, ado, j’ai commencé à écrire des morceaux, j’avais une approche assez conventionnelle, et linéaire. Aujourd’hui, j’ai davantage d’imagination et je suis libre de revenir sur une chanson à tout moment.

C’est un peu plus cosmique.

Le son de votre dernier album est plus propre que celui des précédents, qui étaient très low-fi. Vous pensez que c’est une bonne chose ?

Oui, mais je suis toujours très attaché au low-fi. Quand j’ai commencé, je n’avais pas les moyens de m’offrir des heures en studio, alors je faisais tout moi-même. Je pense que cet état d’esprit m’a suivi en studio. Les producteurs donnent des instructions, mais ceux qui me connaissent savent que lorsque je joue, je cherche à cristalliser un moment sur le vif.

E Are you enjoying your time in Montreux so far ?

I’ll tell you what I’m not enjoying. Neil Young is playing tomorrow and I won’t be here !

He’s on tour now with Lukas Nelson, who is my new guitar hero. I love the stuff he does with The Promise of the Real.

You met Neil Young recently, what was it like ?

It stunk, it was the worst ! No I’m kidding, it was amazing. I’ve seen him live like twelve times. I told him that his concert was the best time I’ve ever seen him and that “ Down by the River ” sounded like he was in outer space and underground at the same time.

He said : “ Oh yeah, we can go into outer space whenever we want ! ”. I’m not sure he cared.

“ Well, I try to be as honest as possible. ”

Let’s talk about your music, what inspires your lyrics ?

Well, I try to be as honest as possible, but I also like to be a little psychedelic.

Sometimes, the words just sound clever together, you know. When I first started writing songs as a teenager, I did it in a quite conventional way, from start to finish. These days I have more imagination and I know I can come back to a song whenever I want. It’s a little more cosmic.

The sound of your last album is cleaner than your previous ones, which were very low-fi. Do you think that’s a good thing ?

Yes I do, but I still like the low-fi thing very much. When I started playing music, I couldn’t afford studio time so I just did it myself. I think that I carried this spirit on in the studio. The producers might tell you to do it in a certain way, but I think that the people around me understand that when I play, it’s all about capturing a candid moment.

F Jarre au Stravinski ? L’événement avait de quoi surprendre. Comment l’un des pionniers en matière de musique synthétique grand public allait-il s’accommoder d’un espace modeste au regard du gigantisme qui caractérise d’ordinaire ses concerts (pyramides de Gizeh, etc.) ? Dès les premiers instants, on est fixé sur ce qui promet d’être déroulé une heure et demie durant : débauche continue de LED et lasers accompagnant une musique tonitruante qu’on se défendra de qualifier de « techno ». Impérial quand il évoque ses albums majeurs des seventies (Oxygène ou Equinoxe), Jarre est moins pertinent lorsqu’il tâche de coller au wagon électro – tel qu’il s’envisage aujourd’hui de Berlin à Tokyo. Passé « Exit », titre épileptique auquel a participé Edward Snowden (dont une déclaration est bien entendu projetée), le musicien déroule un show où nos rétines en prennent pour leur grade, parvenant pourtant à créer le frisson lorsque, tablette numérique en main, il restitue les tonalités mélancoliques qui ont autrefois fait sa patte. Après une ovation reçue à l’issue d’un solo joué sur une « harpe laser » (si, si), Jarre nous touche finalement en remerciant en toute simplicité d’avoir été reçu ici, Montreux, lieu où certains de ses héros se sont produits avant lui : Kraftwerk, premier d’entre eux.

F Imaginez un concert où Neil Young donnerait tout sur « Rockin’ in the

Free World », mais ne saurait plus chanter « Heart of Gold ». C’est un peu l’impression laissée par son plus grand fan, Kurt Vile. Arrivé au Lab une bière à la main, le chanteur américain ouvre le show avec une nonchalance assumée. Il oublie de prendre la guitare que le technicien lui tend, mais se retrouve heureusement dans les dédales de son imposant pedalboard.

Envoyés avec panache, les nerveux « KV Crimes » et « Pretty Pimpin’ » ont l’odeur d’un bon vieux Lynyrd Skynyrd. Replié sur lui-même, caché derrière ses longs cheveux, Kurt nous offre d’excellents solos de guitare nerveux et déstructurés. Mais c’est lorsqu’il calme le jeu que le bât blesse.

La voix trop saturée, les paroles maladroitement placées sur le groove et le tempo trop rapide ôtent toute émotion de ses compositions les plus sensibles. En témoigne le début brouillon du magique « Wakin’ on a Pretty Day ». Après une petite heure de concert, Kurt Vile s’en va sur un trip bruitiste, une bière de plus dans les mains et laisse rugir sa guitare.

E Jarre at the Stravinski ? It was always going to surprise. How would a

pioneer of universal synthetic music adapt his gargantuan shows in venues such as the pyramids of Giza to this limited indoor space ? The first few notes left little room for doubt as to what would follow in the next hour and a half. An abundance of LED lights and lasers danced to blaring music that no-one dared call techno. Although at the top of his game when playing his big seventies albums, Oxygène and Equinoxe, he stuck out like a sore thumb when attempting to hop onto the world’s latest electro bandwagon.

After playing “Exit”, his fast-paced track feat. Edward Snowden, who is of course hinted at on screen, the musician revealed a show that went for our eyes. He succeeded, however, in bringing the crowd together when he picked up his tablet and revived the melancholic tones that made him famous. Following the great applause he received for his laser harp solo – yes, I did say laser – Jarre moved us with a very simple thank you. He was grateful to have been given the opportunity to play here, in Montreux, where Kraftwerk and many more of his heroes had performed before him.

E Imagine a concert in which Neil Young gives it his all on “ Rockin’ in the Free World ”, but forgets how to sing “ Heart of Gold ”. It was pretty much what his biggest fan, Kurt Vile, gave us. The American singer walked on stage beer in hand, and nonchalantly opened up his show. He forgot to take the guitar the technician was holding out for him, but luckily found himself before the complexity of his imposing pedalboard. He played “ KV Crimes ” and “ Pretty Pimpin ” with panache, reminding us of some good ol’ Lynyrd Skynyrd. Closed in on himself and hidden behind his long hair, Kurt offered up some great, ripped up guitar solos. However, as his playing slowed, the gig went from a high to a low. His distorted voice, clumsily placed lyrics and unsuitably fast tempo squashed the emotion from his most delicate songs, as seen with the messy introduction to “ Wakin’ on a Pretty Day ”. At the end of just an hour’s gig, Kurt Vile got carried away ripping into his guitar, before calling for another beer. Cheers to the artist !

F C’est Art Blakey qui le premier m’a parlé de Claude Nobs. Laissez-moi

réfléchir. Suis-je venu à Montreux avec Art ? J’y repense tout le temps depuis quelques années. Nous étions à Paris, nous étions ses petits messagers, il voulait qu’on soit tirés à quatre épingles. Alors, on arpentait les boutiques avec Lee Morgan. On achetait les meilleurs costumes, des bottes cubaines avec des talons compensés, des blazers de collégiens.

Art était toujours sur son trente et un. Une question de tenue. Il avait cette énorme cymbale chinoise. Il était à mon avis le seul batteur à avoir compris la pulsation et le mouvement de Thelonious Monk. Et quelques années plus tard, de retour de l’armée, je me retrouve dans son groupe.

Un jour, on parle politique dans sa maison de montagne. Le lendemain, on est à bord d’un avion qui menace de s’écraser. Et lui, d’un calme olympien : « Ne vous inquiétez pas, messieurs, nous avons une mission, nous avons un message à transmettre. » On se retrouvait en studio et on enregistrait vingt prises pour être sûrs d’obtenir ce qu’on voulait. On se disait que dans quelques années le jazz serait mort et qu’il fallait mettre ça en boîte pour la postérité. On a toujours pensé que le désir de créer pouvait s’éteindre et que nous surfions au sommet de la vague.

Je ne suis venu à Montreux qu’à partir de 1976.

J’étais déjà électrique. Weather Report. Jaco Pastorius à la basse, Joe Zawinul aux claviers.

Je me souviens surtout du dernier concert de Miles, avec Quincy Jones. Nous étions dans les coulisses. Cela faisait des années que j’avais quitté son groupe, mais Miles s’est approché de moi et il m’a murmuré : « Comment ça serait si on se remettait ensemble ? » Il aimait Weather Report. On n’avait jamais rompu le contact.

Il m’appelait à 3 heures du matin pour me faire écouter un morceau. « Tu n’aimes pas ça ?

Hein, tu n’aimes pas ça ! »

E Art Blakey was the first person to tell me about Claude Nobs. Did I come to Montreux with Art ? I think about him all the time these last few years. We were in Paris, we were his little messengers. He wanted us to look neat. So, I went round the shops with Lee Morgan. We bought the best suits, Cuban boots with elevated heels, and those blazers that look collegial. Art was always impeccable. It was a question of keeping up standards. He had this enormous Chinese cymbal. In my opinion he was the only drummer to have understood Thelonious Monk’s punctuation and movement. And, a few years later, when I came out of the army, I joined his band. One day we were talking politics in his house in the mountains. The next day we were on an airplane that almost crashed.

He was as cool as a cucumber : “ Don’t worry gentleman, we have a mission, we have a message to pass on. ” We were in the studio and we did twenty takes to be sure of getting what we wanted. We thought that in a few years jazz would be dead and we had to get it in the can for future generations.

We always thought that the desire to create could die out and that we were surfing on the crest of the wave. I only started coming to Montreux in 1976. I was already electric. Weather Report. Jaco Pastorius on bass, Joe Zawinul on keyboards. But what I really remember is Miles’s last show, with Quincy Jones. We were backstage. I had left his group years before, but Miles came up to me and said, “ What if we got back together ? ” He liked Weather Report. We had never lost touch.

He called me at three in the morning to play me a piece : “ Don’t you like that, huh ? Don’t you like it ? ”

F Ça paraît dingue, mais avant 2006 Iggy Pop n’avait jamais été invité au Festival – connaissant néanmoins depuis un bail Montreux et son Mountain Studios pour y avoir trainé avec David Bowie. Oubli réparé un 14 juillet alors, et avec la manière. Ayant reformé ses Stooges – pour résumer, l’une des machines électriques parmi les plus sauvages jamais recensées – « l’Iguane » débarquait au Stravinski torse-poil, déterminé à faire parler la poudre, les barbelés, les scies à métaux et autres outils guerriers. Jusque-là, rien d’anormal. Quand il s’agit d’Iggy-notre-pèrepunk-à-tous, il est rarement question de dentelles ou de bouzouki. SAUF qu’à presque soixante piges alors, James Newel Österberg Jr. (son vrai nom) envoyait ce soir-là la sauce avec une méchanceté réjouie. Mike Watt et les frangins Asheton moulinant comme des brutes en fond de scène, l’ami Pop déroulait dès lors les classiques par lesquels le punk rock planta ses fondations : « 1969 », « I Wanna Be Your Dog », « T.V. Eye » ou « Fun House ». Wah ! Fans stupéfaits, badauds pétrifiés, les Strokes annoncés deux étages plus bas ramenés au rang de garçons coiffeurs et « Little Electric Chair » asséné à la manière d’une paire de baffes pour doux au-revoir.

La différence entre rock’n’roll et pop ? Le rock peut vous péter à la gueule…

to the Festival until 2006. He’d known Montreux and the Mountain Studios for ages though, because he’d hung out there with David Bowie.

The wrong was righted in style on 14 July.

The Stooges were back together, with one of the most savage electronic sounds ever heard.

The Iguana arrived at the Stravinski bare chested, ready to give it his all and make barbed wire, metal saws and other tools of war sing. So far so normal. Everybody’s punk dad, Iggy, isn’t really one for lace or bouzouki guitars. However, the almost 60-year-old James Newel Österberg Jr. (his real name) added a little something that night. Mike Watt and the Asheton brothers were windmilling like beasts at the back of the stage.

Mr Pop was rocking out to founding punk rock classics, “ 1969 ”, “ I Wanna Be Your Dog ”, “ T.V. Eye ” and “ Fun House ”. The fans were blown away, the curious were shocked, the Strokes who’d supported them were reduced to mere entertainers and “ Little Electric Chair ” left everyone stunned. So what’s the difference between rock and pop? Rock can knock you out !
