F Superstar française de l’électronique depuis plus de quarante ans, Jean-Michel Jarre a lancé en octobre 2015 son projet Electronica, composé de deux albums aux collaborations prestigieuses. Après huit ans d’absence, l’homme aux concerts gigantesques présente son projet le plus ambitieux à ce jour, fruit de trois années de voyages et de travail avec des artistes invités : M83, Laurie Anderson, Moby, Lang Lang, Air, Pete Townshend ou encore Gary Numan, Jeff Mills et Pet Shop Boys. Alchimiste génial et musicien avant-gardiste, Jean-Michel Jarre, 67 ans, vient à Montreux pour un spectacle musical total avec sons et lumières futuristes.

E Jean-Michel Jarre has been a superstar on the French electro scene for over forty years.

In October 2015, he announced his project Electronica – two albums full of prestigious collaborations.

After eight years of silence, this guy who is known for his massive concerts is back with his most ambitious work yet, the result of three years of travel and work with various artists : M83, Laurie Anderson, Moby, Lang Lang, Air, Pete Townshend, Gary Numan, Jeff Mills and Pet Shop Boys – to name a few. 67-year-old Jean-Michel Jarre, avant-garde musician, will be in Montreux for a full-on futuristic sound and light extravaganza.

F Pour reprendre les mots du saxophoniste novateur Albert Ayler, « la musique est la force qui guérit l’univers ». Pour ressentir son pouvoir guérisseur, il suffit d’entrer dans le périmètre du Montreux Jazz Festival : la musique y est omniprésente. Que ce soit à bord des Jazz Trains ou des Jazz Boats, sur les scènes en plein air ou encore auprès des musiciens de rue installés sur les rives du Léman (j’ai pu y écouter un excellent joueur de kora), la musique enveloppe, guérit des meurtrissures de l’actualité internationale et agit en pouvoir unificateur, s’affranchissant des âges, des origines et des nationalités des festivaliers venus célébrer la musique exceptionnelle qu’ils appellent « jazz ». Cependant, le Festival n’en a pas que pour le genre, et accueille sur la même affiche la plume punk Patti Smith et l’icône du jazz Herbie Hancock. Et fait la part belle aux performances des plus diverses, de l’œuvre des sculpteurs de Mogwai aux sons anguleux de Lou Doillon, que j’ai pu écouter grâce à une transmission directe depuis le Lab. Mais un festival, c’est bien plus que de la musique : goûts, parfums et vues sublimes sont de la partie. Ces derniers jours, parmi les sons qui ont accompagné la dégustation de mon dahl, on compte de la musique de théâtre japonais abstrait, le son impétueux et feuilleté du one-man band de Jacob Collier, la star du moment, le Big Band de Pepe Lienhard et ses invités allant de Al Jarreau à Patti Austin sous l’égide curatrice du maestro Quincy Jones. C’est justement QJ qui nous a emmenés, mon présentateur Julian Joseph et moi-même, à Montreux. En vue d’une prochaine émission pour BBC Radio 3, nous venons à la rencontre de l’un des plus grands musiciens du XXe siècle. Vive la musique, et joyeux 50ème anniversaire Montreux !

TODAY'S GUEST E As avant-garde saxophonist Albert Ayler once said, “ music

is the healing force of the universe ”. This 'healing force' is very much in evidence the moment you reach Montreux Jazz soil. Music pours out of every possible space here. Whether on a Jazz Boat/Train, or on a free outdoor stage, or the joyous sounds of buskers on the edge of Lake Geneva ( I heard a wonderful Kora player caressing his African harp ), the music washes over you and soothes away the pain of international current affairs. It is a great unifying force bringing people together of all ages, colours and nationalities to celebrate the great music they call ' jazz '. It's not all about jazz here though.

This festival is where US punk and wordsmith Patti Smith can share the bill with jazz icon Herbie Hancock. It is also a festival that welcomes acts as diverse as Glasgow noise sculptors, Mogwai, alongside the angular sounds of Lou Doillon, whose music I caught and enjoyed on a digital screen transmitting from the Jazz Lab. Festivals are more than just about the music though. The sights, smells and tastes here are great too !

The soundtrack to eating yellow dahl over the past days has included abstract Japanese theatre music ; the man of the moment, Jacob Collier, with his high-energy multi-layered one man band; and Pepe Lienhard and his Big Band with guests ranging from Al Jarreau to Patti Austin playing under the curatorial leadership of maestro Quincy Jones. And it's in search of QJ that myself and my presenter Julian Joseph are here. As we have a meeting with one of the great musical minds of 20th Century, we are recording for a future BBC Radio 3 broadcast.

À Montreux, le miracle s’est produit plusieurs fois. 1968 : Bill Evans sort At the Montreux Jazz Festival et flanque la pochette d’une carte postale délavée du Château de Chillon. 1969 : le live d’Eddie Harris et Les McCann, premier album de jazz à dépasser le million d’exemplaires vendus, s’installe durablement sur les tourne-disques mondiaux avec un titre digne d’un slogan touristique, Swiss Movement. Sans parler de l’incendie du Casino en 1971, qui inspirera à Deep Purple leur tube « Smoke on the Water »…

E Could there be any better way to promote the Festival and Switzerland than flying a Swiss flag high above snow-capped peaks on a record bearing the name of the national airline ?

This miracle happened several times in Montreux.

In 1968, Bill Evans released At the Montreux Jazz Festival, with a washed-out, postcard picture of the Château de Chillon on the album sleeve. Eddie Harris and Les McCann’s 1969 live album was the first jazz album to sell over a million copies. It became a regular on turntables worldwide under the tourist slogan Swiss Movement. Then, of course, there was the fire at the Casino in 1971, which inspired Deep Purple’s hit “ Smoke on the Water ”.

F 1976. David Bowie sort rincé de plusieurs années passées à Los Angeles. Enlisé dans les addictions, sujet à de violentes crises de paranoïa, l’artiste plie brusquement bagage après avoir bouclé un album décisif : Station to Station (1976).

Grand disque malade et œuvre capricieuse, cet opus bouclé sous cocaïne annonce la mue artistique qui attend Bowie à peine plus tard à Berlin. Là, entouré de Brian Eno, Tony Visconti ou Iggy Pop avec qui il vit, Mr. Jones s’essaye à des expérimentations inédites marquées par une écriture libérée des contraintes et l’emploi de textures synthétiques.

Située à l’avant-garde des esthétiques pop, la « trilogie berlinoise » (composée des albums Low, Heroes et Lodger) augure ainsi des pistes musicales décisives, rénovant en profondeur la grammaire rock. Christophe Geudin, rédacteur en chef du magazine Muziq, revient sur les coulisses des trois albums mythiques enregistrés entre Paris, Berlin et Montreux.

HIGHLIGHTS E It was 1976. David Bowie felt drained after several years in Los Angeles. Deep into addiction and prone to violent fits of paranoia, the artist packed his bags as soon as he’d recorded the last note on his key album, Station to Station, in 1976.

This crazy, erratic album finalised under the influence of cocaine was a preview to the artistic transformation that would hit Bowie a little later in Berlin. In the company of his housemates, Brian Eno, Tony Visconti and Iggy Pop, Mr. Jones experiments with a new style based on free writing and synthetic sounds. At the forefront of pop, his “ Berlin Trilogy ” gave rock grammar a facelift thanks to the decisive tracks in his albums Low, Heroes and Lodger. Muziq magazine’s editor-in-chief, Christophe Geudin, looks back at the making of these three legendary albums in Paris, Berlin and Montreux.

ANGÉLIQUE KIDJO Accompagnée de jeunes artistes africaines, la chanteuse béninoise a mis en lumière les femmes de son continent hier soir au Stravinski.

F Comment est né ce projet cent pour cent

féminin et africain ?

Le Festival m’a demandé si j’avais une idée de projet. Je leur ai dit que je voulais exposer la diversité musicale de mon continent. Nous sommes dix millions au Bénin, on parle une cinquantaine de langues et dans chaque village les rythmes sont différents. Ce soir, ça va être la fête. J’ai réussi à arracher du fourneau des femmes extraordinaires, dont une qui est enceinte de quatre mois !

Vous êtes un véritable modèle pour cette nouvelle génération d’artistes africaines.

Quel message leur transmettez-vous ?

Pour moi, Miriam Makeba a été l’élément déclencheur, je suis contente de l’être pour elles. Je leur dis toujours : « Soyez vous-même. Écoutez quelqu’un qui vous inspire, mais ajoutez quelque chose de vous dedans ». Nous vivons dans un monde patriarcal, et ce n’est pas évident pour une femme africaine. Il y a plein de clichés qui affleurent du fait de notre couleur de peau, notre appartenance et nous devons constamment prouver les choses.

«Je voulais exposer la diversité musicale de mon continent.» À Montreux, il y a toujours eu une place importante pour la musique africaine !

C’est un festival de jazz qui donne tout son sens au mot « jazz ». Le jazz, c’est un mélange. Il tire ses racines du blues. Et qui a ramené le blues aux États-Unis ? Les esclaves africains. En tant qu’Africaine, je dis toujours que quand j’approche une musique, je ne vais pas en terrain inconnu. Le peuple africain n’est pas assez fier de ce qu’il a apporté au reste du monde. Tous les genres de musique sont les nôtres.

Claude Nobs a compris tout ça. Et c’est pour ça que le Montreux Jazz Festival est unique au monde.

Votre première fois ici, c’était il y a trente ans exactement.

C’était comment ?

Quand je suis venu ici en 1986, j’avais quitté l’Afrique depuis seulement trois ans. Je commençais à jouer du free jazz, ce qui m’a appris que ma voix pouvait aussi être un instrument faisant partie d’un groupe. Claude était impressionné par mon adaptabilité à toutes les musiques. Il poussait tous mes projets à Montreux. C’était un musicien. Son instrument, c’était d’être le maître de cérémonie d’un festival qui donne une voix aux jeunes n’ayant pas encore de carrière.

E How did this hundred percent female and African project start?

The Festival asked me if I had an idea for the project. I told them I wanted to showcase the musical diversity of my continent. We’re ten million in Benin, we speak about fifty languages and rhythms are different from one village to the next. Tonight, we’re going to celebrate! I’ve managed to steal amazing women from their kitchens, including one who is four-months pregnant.

You are a real model for this new generation of African artists. What is your message to them?

Miriam Makeba was my inspiration. I am proud to be an inspiration to the new generation. I always say to them : “Be yourselves. Listen to someone who inspires you, but add something of your own”. It’s not easy for African women to live in a patriarchal society. Many clichés are related to the colour of our skin and our ethnicity, so we always have to prove things.

African music has always been one of the main genres in Montreux.

It’s a jazz festival that gives the word “jazz” its full meaning. Jazz is a mix of cultures.

It came from blues. Who brought blues to the United States? The African slaves. As an African woman, I always tell myself that I’m not on uncharted ground when approaching music. Africans are not proud enough of what they’ve brought to the rest of the world!

All musical genres belong to us. Claude Nobs understood that, and that is why the Montreux Jazz Festival is unique!

You first came here 30 years ago. How was it?

When I first came here in 1986, I had left Africa only three years before. I had just started playing free jazz, which made me realise that my voice could also be an instrument in a band. Claude was impressed by my capacity to adapt to each genre.

He supported all my Montreux projects. He was a musician, and his instrument was to be the Festival’s maestro and to give young talents who haven’t started their careers a chance to perform.

LAST NIGHT ANGÉLIQUE KIDJO AUDITORIUM STRAVINSKI

F Angélique Kidjo : amie du Festival depuis trente ans, ambassadrice de l’UNESCO, lauréate de plusieurs Grammy et artiste majeure du continent africain. Hier soir, elle partageait la scène avec les chanteuses Asa, Dobet Gnahoré, Lura et le Trio Teriba. Thème de la soirée : « rendre hommage aux femmes du monde entier et célébrer la diversité du continent africain. » Les quatre copines font une entrée fracassante sur le tube « Pata Pata » de Miriam Makeba. Aussitôt, le ton est donné et le Stravinski se transforme en gigantesque piste de danse. Le concert enchaîne les titres en solo, duo, trio, quatuor. Chacune profite de jouer ses tubes respectifs. La température monte, les mamas dansent éventail à la main et jacassent sans arrêt : « Oh mais t’as vu sa robe ? », « Ma chérie tu es magnifique ! », « Il est où ton homme ? Il regarde le foot ?». Immersion totale. Comme Lisa Simone hier et Buddy Guy la semaine passée, Angélique gratifie son public d’un bain de foule. Soudain, Angélique est face à moi et me fixe, on échange quelques pas de danse, elle repart. Un sourire d’abruti rayonne sur mon visage. Pour le GRAND final, le public est invité à rejoindre toute la famille sur scène qui se transforme alors en battle de danse sur des percussions endiablées. Déhanchés après déhanchés, ces femmes plus belles les unes que les autres me font tourner la tête. Eduardo Mendez

MANU KATCHÉ MONTREUX JAZZ CLUB

F Deux ans après son dernier passage au Club, le batteur virtuose revient à la tête d’un quintet inédit. De nouveaux musiciens pour un projet frais : Unstatic, où le groove du Français flirte avec la chaleur des cuivres.

Saxophone, trombone et trompette se mettent ainsi en place. Katché s’installe à coté de la contrebasse. Show instrumental digne d’un club de jazz. Ambiance tamisée. Les musiciens s’expriment. D’abord timidement.

Puis en viennent chacun à leur solo. La batterie est en retrait, accompagnant les autres instruments avec finesse. Une jolie ballade jazz un peu classique se déploie. Las, ça manque de nerf. En vrai, assis sur notre chaise, on s’endormirait presque. Puis Manu de nous réveiller enfin avec des coups secs de caisse claire. Pour un instant, le voilà qui prend le micro, présente ses acolytes et rend hommage à Claude Nobs et à la « magie » du Club. De retour derrière ses fûts, Katché retrouve maintenant sa poigne. Sourire aux lèvres, on le voit qui frappe ses toms en dansant. La connexion se fait enfin. Alexandre Caporal

E Angélique Kidjo has been the Festival’s friend for thirty years. She is a UNESCO ambassador, has won several Grammies and is a leading African artist. She was joined on stage by singers, Asa, Dobet Gnahoré, Lura and the Trio Teriba tonight. Her concert paid tribute to women worldwide and celebrated Africa’s diversity. The four friends made a dramatic entrance to the sound of “ Pata Pata ”, by Miriam Makeba, and set the night’s tone.

The Stravinski immediately became a giant dancefloor. Solos, duos, trios and quartets were sung one after the other. Each artist took the chance to play her songs. The room got hot, and mamas danced fan in hand while chatting non-stop. “ But, oh, have you seen her dress? ”, “ My dear, you’re beautiful! ”, “ Where’s your man? Is he watching the football? ”. The hall was bewitched. Angélique stepped into the crowd, just as Lisa Simone had done last night, and Buddy Guy last week. All of a sudden, she appeared right in front of me. She stared at me, we shared a few dance moves, and then she left. I couldn’t wipe the stupid grin off my face. The crowd was then invited to join the family on stage for the GRAND finale, which lively percussion music turned into a wild dance-off. My head was spinning just watching all the beautiful women on stage swaying their hips to the music.

E Two years after his last performance at the Club, the drumming virtuoso came back at the head of a new quintet with a refreshing project. Unstatic combines Katché’s groove with welcoming brass sounds. The saxophonist, trombonist and trumpet player stepped on stage followed by Manu Katché, who took up his place next to the double bass. The musicians delivered an instrumental show worthy of a jazz club. Under the dim lights, the musicians shyly began to express themselves, before suddenly attacking their solos. The drums stayed in the background, acting as a subtle accompaniment to the other instruments. A beautiful jazz ballad unfolded, which left the crowd wanting more pep. It would have been all too easy to just fall asleep on our chairs if Manu’s sharp snare drum hadn’t finally jumped into action. He grabbed the microphone to introduce his fellow musicians and pay tribute to Claude Nobs and the Club’s “ magic ”. When Katché stepped behind his toys again, he was back in the game. He could be seen smiling and dancing as he hit his tam-tam. Finally, a link to the old stuff.

F J’ai connu Claude Nobs à travers ma femme qui était disquaire. Il était

cuisinier, moi aussi. On aimait la musique. Si Oscar Peterson venait manger dans mon restaurant, mon épouse veillait à distance, émue. Je ne sais pas s’il y a du jazz dans ma cuisine, mais si vous regardez comment je prépare mes huîtres chaudes, vous comprendrez que j’aime sortir des sentiers battus, tenter des pirouettes qu’on n’a pas souvent vues. Comme un jazzman. Je ne suis pas show-biz pour un sou. Je n’ai jamais parlé suffisamment l’anglais pour aller taper le carton avec les musiciens que Montreux m’envoyait. Mais j’aimais qu’ils soient là. Quincy Jones débarquait à 16 heures, affamé, avec Nastassja Kinski. Je le mettais à la petite table, avec les cuisiniers. Il aimait beaucoup mes rognons à la Bolo – c’est mon père qui avait inventé la recette au Café Vaudois à Lausanne, pour un exilé politique qui s’appelait Bolo. Quincy s’asseyait. Il faut des tranches à peine plus épaisses qu’une pièce de 5 francs directement posées dans une assiette de fonte émaillée.

Un morceau de beurre, du sel, du poivre, on retourne, encore du sel et du poivre. On envoie l’assiette encore frémissante. Quincy en raffolait. Claude aussi. Aujourd’hui, les gens n’aiment plus les abats. Moi j’en mange depuis mes quatorze ans et ça va très bien. Un soir, Claude m’appelle pour me demander comment cuisiner les cèpes pour David Bowie. Je lui réponds : « Garde tes champignons, j’arrive dans deux heures. » Bowie, je l’aime bien. C’est un perfectionniste comme moi. Je me rends au chalet sans tambour ni trompette. Une poêlée à l’échalote avec des herbes et un petit risotto à la truffe blanche à côté. Ils sont tous aimables avec moi. Je me mets à un coin de la table. Et je les écoute. Je crois qu’on avait des points communs avec Claude. Personne ne croyait vraiment à notre projet.

QUINCY’S KIDNEYS

E I met Claude Nobs through my wife, who had a record shop. He was a chef, like me. We loved music. If Oscar Peterson came to eat in my restaurant, my wife used to watch from a distance, all excited. I don’t know if there’s something jazz-like in my cooking. But if you see how I make my hot oysters you’ll see that I like to go off the beaten track, to try tricks that haven’t often been seen before. Like a jazzman. There’s not an ounce of showbiz in me. I’ve never spoken English well enough to play cards with the musicians they sent me from Montreux. But I liked having them there. Quincy Jones turned up at four in the afternoon with Nastassja Kinski. He was hungry. I put him at the small table, with the cooks.

He really liked my kidneys à la Bolo - that’s a recipe my father invented at the Café Vaudois in Lausanne for a political exile called Bolo. Quincy sat down. I took slices no thicker than a five - franc coin, placed directly in an enameled cast iron plate.

A nob of butter, salt, pepper, turn it over, more salt and pepper. You send out the plate still quivering.

Quincy loved it. So did Claude.

People today no longer like offal. I’ve been eating it since I was fourteen, and I’m doing just fine. One night Claude called me to ask how to cook porcini for David Bowie. I answered, “Keep your mushrooms, I’ll be there in two hours.” I love Bowie. He’s a perfectionist, like me. I went to the chalet, without any fuss. Fried them with shallots and herbs.

A little risotto with white truffle on the side. They were all very nice with me. I took a seat at the corner of the table, and I listened.

I think I had a few things in common with Claude. Nobody really believed in our ambition.

F C’est un concert que les fans de Miles connaissent jusque dans ses silences. Une nuit qui s’étudie désormais dans les écoles de jazz.

Des heures que Montreux conserve en mémoire comme l’un des instants clés qui ont forgé son histoire. 8 juillet 1991 : pour la première fois de sa carrière, le trompettiste accepte de se pencher sur sa trajectoire. Ici, on spécule encore. Est-ce parce que Davis savait sa santé vacillante qu’il accepta enfin de visiter Birth of Cool, Miles Ahead et Sketches of Spain ? Ou est-ce en raison de l’amitié particulière qui le liait au duo dirigeant le Festival cette année-là ? Claude Nobs, bien sûr, mais aussi Quincy Jones produisant le rendez-vous jusqu’en 1993. Ainsi accompagné du grand orchestre de Gil Evans et du George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, Miles se mesure à un répertoire composé quatre décennies plus tôt. « Q » dirige. Les solistes Wallace Roney et Kenny Garrett soutiennent. Le public la boucle.

Vient « Boplicity », plus tard « Blues for Pablo », on cite « Porgy and Bess » et plonge dans « Summertime »… Les gorges se serrent. Car Miles sourit. « Solea » vient d’expirer dans ses sommets périlleux. Et maintenant c’est l’artiste étreignant Quincy, puis disparaissant enfin. En monarque. En intouchable. Un géant venait de donner son ultime concert à Montreux. Disparu un 28 septembre, il devenait mémoire.

E Miles’ fans know this concert so well they even

know its silences. It’s a night that is studied in jazz schools. Those hours are remembered as key moments in Montreux’s history. On 8 July 1991, the trumpeter agreed to a retrospective for the first time in his career. There are a few theories as to why. Was it because Davis knew his health was uncertain that he finally agreed to revisit Birth of Cool, Miles Ahead and Sketches of Spain? Or was it because of the close friendship linking him to the duo heading up the Festival that year? Claude Nobs, of course, but also Quincy Jones, organised the Festival until 1993. Miles took on a repertoire composed four decades earlier, accompanied by Gil Evans’s big orchestra and the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band. “ Q ” conducted. Soloists Wallace Roney and Kenny Garrett provided support. The public didn’t make a sound. They played “ Boplicity ”, then “ Blues for Pablo ”, and a bit of " Porgy & Bess “ with “ Summertime”. It was an emotional moment. Miles was smiling as the high notes in “ Solea ” faded into silence. Then he hugged Quincy and finally left. He was an untouchable king. He was a legend, who had just performed at Montreux for the last time. He passed away on 28 September, but lived on in our hearts.
