F S’il est un habitué de Montreux, fidèle ami de Claude Nobs, c’est bien Carlos Santana. Venu plus de douze fois seul ou dans le cadre de projets spéciaux, accompagné de Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin ou encore Tinariwen, il n’avait pas enflammé l’Auditorium Stravinski depuis 2011. Santana émerge de la scène musicale de San Francisco à la fin des années 60 pour atteindre le rang de star internationale à partir de son set épique à Woodstock en 1969. Depuis, le guitariste américain cumule dix Grammy Awards et trois Latin Grammy

E If there has ever been a Montreux regular and true friend of Claude Nobs, it has to be Carlos Santana. He has come to Montreux more than twelve times either for solo performances or special projects alongside artists like Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin, and Tinariwen. He last played the Auditorium Stravinski in 2011.

Santana came out of San Francis-

co’s music scene in the late sixties, becoming an international star with his epic set at Woodstock in 1969. Since then, this American guitarist has earned ten Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, a clear indication of the impact he has made over forty years in the spotlight, and with almost that many LPs to his credit.

EDITO F Le gamin s’appelle Félix. Félix Rabin. Il est originaire de Neuchâtel. À le regarder, on ne lui donnerait pas vingt ans. Plutôt un peu moins. Félix est guitariste. Pour dire les choses franchement: il déchire! Un talent fou.

Il y a trois ans, il foulait pour la première fois la scène du Club, déroulant ce trop de notes caractéristique des jeunes virtuoses. Le 3 juillet 2015, il reprenait du service. Même lieu.

Même dégaine de grand adolescent attachant.

Sauf que les effusions qui nous l’avaient fait remarquer s’étaient dissipées. Félix avait fait sa mue. Moins de notes, désormais. Et le cœur du public visé, touché. Chaque soir, aux alentours de minuit et pour un court quart d’heure, le kid annonce les jams à venir au Club, guitare en main et sourire serein. Un virtuose de classe A dans la maison? Ça a fini par se savoir. D’abord, des musiciens locaux l’ont approché. Puis du gros calibre. Enfin, des types dont on n’imagine pas qu’un jour ils puissent vous solliciter pour «discuter»: Quincy Jones, dont on sait l’implication dans l’aide aux jeunes musiciens. Mais pour Félix, pas question de se précipiter. Il a le talent, la confiance et le temps pour lui. Vient cet instant passé en sa compagnie sur la terrasse près du Club où on l’écoute longuement, admirant le calme par lequel il évoque «la suite», comme il dit. Plus tard, le regardant s’éloigner, on se met simplement à souhaiter que de Montreux à Paris ou ailleurs, d’autres, nombreux, viennent bientôt recueillir un peu de sa lumière. David Brun-Lambert

E The name is Félix, Félix Rabin. He is from Neuchâtel. At first glance, you wouldn’t think he was twenty. Félix is a guitarist, and an amazingly talented one at that. He first set foot on the Club stage three years ago, playing an endless stream of notes like all young maestros. On July 3rd 2015, the endearing teenager came back, but this time a little older and wiser. His coming of age meant fewer notes, and an emotional audience. At about midnight every day, the cool and collected kid picks up his guitar for a fifteen-minute introduction to the night’s jam sessions. It didn’t take long to realise that a top-notch musician was in the house. He was approached first by local musicians, but then even the crème de la crème guys were by his side.

The guys you could only ever dream of meeting, like Quincy Jones who is no stranger to mentoring young musicians. However, Félix is in no rush. He has the talent, the confidence and the time to go far. As we listened to him talk calmly and collectively about the next step on the terrace by the Club, we held back the desire to know more about “after” because some dreams need to become reality in secret. We then watched him leave, hoping that, whether in Montreux, Paris or elsewhere, many more will come searching for his gift.

F Bon d’accord, Lenny Kravitz, ça envoie.

Mais avouons que si c’est un rock hyper solide - le live de ce soir l’a prouvé - il est calibré pour plaire au plus grand nombre. Alors quand un garçon comme Benjamin Booker se pointe devant un public avide d’écouter «I’ll Be Waiting» ou «Fly Away», forcément, ça coince. Formation power-trio sans artifices, disto bien crade, solos bruitistes et chuchotement mystique en guise de voix: le public n’adhère pas au blues-punk de Booker. Mais l’irrévérencieux ne va pas s’adapter pour autant. Et diable qu’il a raison! Un doigt d’honneur, du larsen et un orage de distorsion se succèdent pour provoquer un public récalcitrant. Résultat des courses: d’un côté, un jeune artiste fougueux, jouant un rock poisseux qui ne détonerait pas dans True Detective et qu’on ne voit pas concéder, pas plus aujourd’hui que demain, un poil de concession. De l’autre, un public principalement venu pour Kravitz, mais qui, vers la fin, concéda à tendre l’oreille et à saluer le talentueux insolent. Steve Riesen

BENJAMIN BOOKER

E Ok ok, Lenny Kravitz has it down. Let’s be honest, tonight’s gig may have shown that his rock has oomph, but the guy does know what the crowd wants. Therefore, when a boy like Benjamin Brooker stood before an audience eager to hear “I’ll Be Waiting” and “Fly Away”, he was already off to a sticky start. The crowd just wasn’t feeling the plain power-trio’s blues-punk, with its cruddy distortions, noisy solos and strange whisper-like voice. However, the stubborn Brooker didn’t back down, and thank God for that! He kept at it, showing the refractory crowd what he could do with the finger, Larsen effect and distorted grumble. In the end, the room was split. On the one hand, an ardent young artist played dodgy rock that would never make a sound in True Detective, or land a deal any time soon. On the other, an audience with ears only for Kravitz, but who eventually came round and started to acknowledge the talented whippersnapper.

Ce n’est rien de dire qu’on attendait Hot Chip au Lab ce soir, confiant en l’idée que cet été exceptionnel sur la Riviera pouvait bien devenir un «Summer of Love». Il lui manquait une B.O.?

Les six arrivent sur scène, l’air d’une colonie de vacances pour quadragénaires. On se laisse faire. Deux-trois notes slapées à la basse, une ligne groovy au synthé, on entre dans la danse.

Le tempo est fixé à 120 Bpm, il ne bougera pas du concert. Un vent de sensualité gagne l’audience. Ça danse. Ça chorégraphie. Je me dis: pourquoi ne pas être corps tout simplement? Un corps athlète et dansant, taillé par cette rythmique solide, ces basses joueuses, ces mélodies heureuses? Je m’imagine en Saab décapotable, polo rose et pantacourt en lin roulant vers mon cours d’aqua-gym en écoutant «Over and Over» sur un autoradio 80’s. La grande vie. Laurent Küng

E These geek lookalikes are responsible for a worldwide baby boom. It’s not enough to say we were just waiting for Hot Chip at the Lab tonight. We were convinced that a summer of love would grow out of this exceptional Riviera summer. All that was missing, however, some sort of official bulletin, but Alexis Taylor and his mates fixed that. As the six arrived on stage it seemed as if they were going to a fortysomethings’ holiday camp. The dancing erupted after a couple of notes from the base and a groovy feel from the synthesizer. The tempo was locked at 120 bpm and there it stayed throughout he concert. Voluptuous vibes reverberated through the crowd pulsating their dance moves. Then I wondered, wouldn’t it be great just to be the body? A dancing machine sculpted by the meaty rhythm, vivacious basses and euphoric melodies? I imagined myself in a open topped Saab, wearing a pink polo neck and linen three quarter lengths, on my way to aqua-aerobics and listening to “Over & Over” with my radio set on 80s. What a life.

Propos recueillis par Alexandre Caporal F Vous êtes un fidèle de Montreux depuis longtemps. Venir ici est-il toujours un plaisir?

Oui. Vous savez, c’est ma sixième venue à Montreux, dont la deuxième avec Toto. Hier soir, on a passé une soirée fantastique.

On a notamment vu notre pote Lionel Richie avec qui on a travaillé sur plusieurs enregistrements. Ensuite on a vu Quincy, un vieil ami, et j’ai traîné avec l’un de mes héros, le guitariste John McLaughlin! C’est toute la beauté de ce festival.

Vous avez été proche de Claude Nobs. Quel souvenir conservezvous de lui?

Claude me manque. C’était une très belle âme. Partout où je vais, les gens parlent de lui. La dernière fois que je l’ai vu, j’ai dû le faire entrer lors d’un spectacle que je donnais en hommage à Les Paul.

Claude n’avait pas de pass. Mais il s’agit de Claude, le légendaire Claude! Et il ne pouvait pas entrer!

Je lui ai donc donné mon pass et lui ai dit: «Vas-y, s’il-te plaît.

Laisse-moi faire ça pour toi».

Tu as collaboré avec des artistes immenses. Parmi ceux avec qui tu n’as encore travaillé, lequel choisirais-tu?

Peter Gabriel. Je suis un de ses grands fans depuis très longtemps. Il est un de ceux avec qui je n’ai pas encore eu la chance de travailler, mais il n’a pas vraiment besoin de moi (rire).

J’adorerais jouer avec les Rolling Stones un jour aussi, mais eux non plus n’ont pas besoin de moi (rire). Mais d’un autre côté, j’ai eu la chance de collaborer avec tant de mes idoles. Moi, je suis comme une éponge, je m’inspire de tous les grands producteurs, ingénieurs, auteurs et artistes de tous styles.

Après toutes ces années ensemble, quel rapport entretiens-tu avec les autres membres de Toto ?

Les gars de Toto sont mes frères.

Quand j’avais une vingtaine d’années, on étudiait la musique ensemble et on avait un rêve fou: celui de créer un groupe et de devenir musiciens de studio. Ça me fait bizarre rien que d’y penser.

C’est comme si j’avais cligné des yeux et que quarante ans avaient passé. Je suis toujours ce jeune homme stupide, même si mon permis de conduire me ramène à la réalité (rire).

E Do you still enjoy coming to Montreux ?

Yes. You know, this is my sixth time I think, second time with Toto, but I’ve done it a bunch of times. Last night was fantastic.

We went out and saw our buddy Lionel Richie who we all worked on a records with, and then we saw Quincy, who’s an old dear friend, and one of my guitar heroes: John McLaughlin! This is the beauty of this festival.

with. But he doesnt’ really need me. I’d love to play with The Rolling Stones some day too, but they don’t need me either but… I don’t know, there’s probably a bunch of people I could sit here and talk about for a long time. On the other side of the coin I’ve had a chance to work with so many of my heroes through the years and learn from them and watch the process of how they work and everybody works differently. So I’m like a sponge, I take from all the great producers, engineers, songwriters, artists of every style.

What do you remember about Claude Nobs ?

I miss Claude, he was a beautiful soul. His spirit… Everywhere I go, people are talking about him.

Last time I saw him, I actually had to get him into a show I was doing with a tribute to Les Paul.

He didn’t have a pass. Now this is Claude, right, legendary Claude!

And the guy would’t let him in!

So I gave him my pass and I said “Please go, let me do this for you”.

After all these years, what kind of relationship do you have with the other members of Toto?

These are my brothers. My coming of age, and we studied music together, we had this crazy dream of having a band then we became studio musicians. It’s kind of weird to even think about it.

Time... It’s like I blinked and 40 years went by. I’m still a silly little kid, but my driver’s licence tells me something else.

You’ve worked with some legendary artists. Who would you like to play with next?

Peter Gabriel. But I was always a big fan way way back. He’s one guy I haven’t had a chance to work

Prince – 14 July 2013 F Entre l’homme et l’idole, quelles différences? Quelques tubes de fond de teint assurément, mais le maquillage ne fait pas tout. Si la recette est complexe, les mécanismes du culte restent intelligibles. Il s’agit de faire la bonne musique au bon moment, d’apprendre à cultiver le mystère en se forgeant une image équivoque entre le pimp et le prédicateur, de s’inventer quelques caprices comme celui d’exiger, en 2009, d’emporter sur scène quelques statues lourdes comme un semi-remorque… Ah oui! Et aussi de vendre des dizaines de millions d’albums. En ce qui me concerne, j’ai beau appliquer la recette de mon mieux, ça ne marche pas trop fort pour moi jusqu’à présent. Laurent Küng

E Any differences between a man and an idol? Few tubes of foundation-powder is obviously needed, but make-up isn’t all that. Although the secret is complex, the cult mechanism stays understandable. It’s about making good music at the right time and learning how to keep a mysterious side while fostering a self-image between the pimp and the preacher.

It’s also about inventing whims like the one in 2009, that consisted of asking to bring on stage some heavy status, like a semi-truck for instance… Oh, yeah! And also to sell tens of millions of albums. As far as I am concerned, although I follow my old buddy’s instructions carefully, it hasn’t really worked for me yet.

E The first album released by Carlos Santana when he was just twenty-two and only just in San Francisco. It’s an album packed with red-hot blues, funk and rock and oozing testosterone – simply too hard-core for the Woodstock audience. Lethal!

Omettant d’autres détails: un embouteillage géant (le plus important de l’histoire des Etats-Unis), des musiciens acheminés par les hélicoptères de l’US Army et des militaires forcés de ravitailler en nourriture, eau potable et médicaments un public livré à lui-même, tandis que la région était, elle, déclarée «zone sinistrée»…

Si Woodstock fut l’événement le plus spectaculaire né de la contre-culture américaine des sixties, il marqua également la fin de la tolérance qui prévalait jusque-là à l’égard du «flower power». Passés les meurtres commis par les ouailles de Charles Manson et la disparition de leurs prophètes (Joplin, etc.), les «enfants fleurs» se découvraient soudain sans leader ni direction. Peu après, le mouvement hippie s’effondrait. Woodstock constitua en quelque sorte ses grandioses funérailles. Et l’ère des festivals géants s’ouvrait sur un enterrement…

F Woodstock aurait dû être un énorme coup commercial. Ce fut un gouffre financier.

Michael Lang, organisateur de la manifestation, en fut pour ses frais. Lang était un hippie: entrepreneur charismatique, il avait déjà réuni 100 000 jeunes durant un festival de deux jours à Miami. Les bénéfices avaient été engloutis dans la construction d’un studio d’enregistrement dans la région de Woodstock, à 40 kilomètres de New York. Il manquait des fonds pour achever le chantier. Il imagina alors un autre festival, s’entoura d’associés, loua un terrain de 243 hectares pour 50 000 dollars et lança en juin 1969 une campagne d’affichage dans le métro new-yorkais. «Trois jours de paix et de musique. Des centaines d’hectares à parcourir. Promène-toi sans voir un gratte-ciel ou un feu rouge. Fais voler un cerf-volant.

Fais-toi bronzer. Cuisine toi-même tes repas et respire de l’air pur». Résultat: le 15 août, 450 000 jeunes célébraient la «politique de l’extase» hippie en assistant dans des conditions d’hygiène moyenâgeuses aux concerts

CARLOS SANTANA À MONTREUX “OPEN HAIR”

Santana’s music conjures up memories of Woodstock, but all the mud, music and LSD aside, what actually happened?

E Woodstock was meant to reel in the dough, but unfortunately, it failed to deliver, and organiser, Michael Lang, got little for his efforts. Lang was a hippie and charismatic businessman who had succeeded in getting 100,000 young people to flock to a two-day festival in Miami. The construction of a recording studio in Woodstock, about 24 miles from New York, devoured most of the earnings, and still, the funds were insufficient to finish the project. He therefore got started on another festival by finding several sponsors, hiring a 353-acre space for $50,000 and launching a publicity campaign on the New York Metro in June 1969 that read, “Three days of peace and music. Hundreds of acres to roam on. Walk around for three days without seeing a skyscraper or a traffic light. Fly a kite, sun yourself. History remembers this stuff but filters out other details like the fact that the event saw the largest traffic jam in US history, artists were brought in by US Army helicopters and soldiers replenishing an audience left to its own devices with food, drinkable water and medicine. The region was declared a disaster area. Woodstock was both the greatest show to emanate from US sixties’ counterculture and ‘flower power’s’ death sentence. The ‘flower power saplings’ were suddenly left leaderless in the aftermath of the Manson murders and the deaths of idols such as Hendrix and Joplin. The hippie movement disintegrated shortly after. In a way, Woodstock buried the heroes and marked the beginning of gigantic festivals.
