EDITO F La fatigue s’est à présent installée et on la sait durable. Non pas néfaste. Nullement à redouter. Simplement une compagne avec laquelle il faut composer. Combien de jours reste-t-il? On ne compte pas. Pas plus hier qu’aujourd’hui. Au loin, on sait qu’attend un samedi où la messe sera dite. Il paraît lointain. Mais une fois passé, il faudra retourner au quotidien et c’est là une idée qui nous apparaît curieuse, parfois. «Nous», ce sont les centaines de membres du Staff qui participent à la mécanique du Montreux Jazz. Vous ne soupçonnez pas notre existence. Nous travaillons en coulisses. Lorsque vous nous croisez, c’est souvent forçant le pas pour rallier un point ou un autre. Plutôt que nos visages, vous retiendrez notre vélocité. Pourtant, dissimulés dans des sous-sols ou aux arrières des scènes, nous sommes une armée. Certains diront une communauté. Nous insufflons une énergie à ces lieux. Chacun à notre mesure, nous sommes des bâtisseurs de mémoire, œuvrant d’un soir à l’autre à la construction de vos souvenirs ici, au Festival. On ne dit pas une fin. Plutôt une suspension, un temps défini durant lequel vous ne nous lirez plus, et ce jusqu’à la prochaine fois.

Puis tout recommencera. Ce sera une autre quinzaine. Une autre fatigue heureuse qui, doucement, s’installe et traduit l’interzone cotonneuse dans laquelle se territorialise le Montreux Jazz. Enfin se déploiera la même énergie, dense, positive, ce ciment que nous partageons tous ici et qui nous lie. Quel jour sommes-nous déjà? Today there’re less than there were yesterday. We know there is a Saturday coming when the final word will be said. It seems far away.

Yet once it is over, we’ll have to go back to everyday life, an idea that sometimes seems strange. “We” are the hundreds of Staff who take part in the mechanics of the Montreux

Jazz Festival. You are not aware of our existence. We work behind the scenes. When you see us, we are often running from A to B. You won’t remember our faces, just our velocity.

Yet, hidden in the basements, or backstage, we are an army. Some would say a community.

We pump energy into this place. Every one of us, according to our capacity, contributes to the building of memories, working night after night for you to make memories here at the Festival. In a few days, we’ll say “au revoir”.

We won’t use the word “end”. It is more of a suspension, a definite period of time during which you won’t be reading our work, until the next time. Then it will all start over again.

Another two weeks. Another happy sleepiness will settle in slowly, reflecting the fluffy limbo that the Montreux Jazz Festival inhabits. The same energy will be deployed, dense, positive, bonding us and cementing ties. What day is it again?

LE SAVIEZ-VOUS F Entre 1914 et 1917, Clarens était un foyer de la future révolution russe. Outre Tolstoï qui y séjournait ou Lénine qui s’y était exilé, on trouvait là des personnalités aussi remuantes que Kropotkine, le prince anarchiste, Lazarev, poseur de bombes évadé de Sibérie ou l’intellectuel bolchévique Boukharine qui fonda même un Club Russe à l’Hôtel Splendid. Parmi ses activités: l’adhésion de ses membres au Parti socialiste suisse afin de… le faire basculer!

Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition, Montreux Palace

F Coup de théâtre lors de la demi-finale de la Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition! Après une longue délibération, le pianiste jamaïcain Monty Alexander annonce une nouvelle choc: le niveau était tel que le jury n’a pu départager les neuf candidats. «Ils ont tous joué avec beaucoup de cœur sur chaque note et ont démontré leur talent avec une grande humilité», a-t-il expliqué. On retrouvera donc les mêmes pianistes lors de la finale qui se tient aujourd’hui à 16 heures au Petit Théâtre du Montreux Palace.

Depuis 1999, l’illustre salle sert d’écrin à l’une des plus prestigieuses compétitions de piano solo au monde. La Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition se donne pour mission de repérer les jeunes talents et de leur offrir une visibilité. Cette année, sur les cinquante-deux inscrits, neuf pianistes de dixneuf à trente ans, tous issus d’horizons très divers, tentent de décrocher le premier prix.

Jouant sur le même piano, les candidats n’ont droit à aucun artifice, uniquement leur virtuosité. Hier, Jorge Luis Pacheco Campos a marqué la soirée de son empreinte. Le sautillant Cubain a fait preuve de passion et de folie.

Tapant frénétiquement du pied et jouant à une vitesse hallucinante, il a emballé le public.

Toutefois, le jury, visiblement surpris, lui a demandé un titre supplémentaire dans un registre plus calme.

Il n’était pas le seul à avoir fait forte impression. L’Israélien Jeremy Hababou avait, lui, un jeu plus aéré et passait facilement d’un phrasé lyrique à un touché plus syncopé.

«Pourquoi jouer tant de notes alors qu’il suffit de choisir les meilleures?» La fameuse citation de Miles Davis lui sied comme un gant. Il y avait encore le Russe Alexey Ivannikov qui se

balançait tel un métronome sur sa chaise et a impressionné le public par ses phrasés à une main.

La virtuosité étant à peu près égale chez les neuf candidats, le jury les départagera aujourd’hui en prenant en compte leur originalité, leur imagination et leur expressivité.

On le comprend: à la Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition, les places sont chères! Le vainqueur sera ainsi récompensé d’un prix de CHF10000, d’une montre Parmigiani édition limitée et de quatre jours d’enregistrement au Balik Farm Studio. Mais surtout, il sera salué d’une reconnaissance sans égal. Les seconds et troisièmes lauréats recevront respectivement CHF5000 et CHF3000. Le suspens reste complet!

E The semi-final of the Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Solo Piano competition took an unexpected turn. After much deliberation, Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander announced some shocking news: the level was so high that the jury was unable to decide between the nine candidates. “They’ve all played each and every note with a lot of passion and showed their talent with great humility,” he explained. We will therefore see the same pianists at the final taking place today at 4pm in the Montreux Palace’s Petit Théâtre.

Since 1999, the famous room has been the elegant location of one of the most prestigious solo piano competitions in the world. The Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition aims at identifying young talents and offering them visibility. This year, out of the 52 registrants, 9 pianists aged 19 to 30 from very different backgrounds are

attempting to win first prize. Playing on the same piano, the candidates are not allowed to use any artifice and have to rely solely on their virtuosity. Yesterday, Jorge Luis Pacheco Campos left his mark on the evening. The bouncy Cuban showed passion and extravagance. Tapping his feet frenetically and playing at hallucinating speed, he thrilled the public. The jury, however, seemed quite surprised and asked him to play another piece in a calmer register. He wasn’t the only one to make a strong impression. Israeli Jeremy Hababou’s piano playing was more delicate; he moved easily from lyrical phrasing to a more percussive touch. “Why play so many notes instead of just choosing the most beautiful?” The famous Miles Davis quotation fits him like a glove. Let’s not forget Russian Alexey Ivannikov, who swayed on his chair like a metronome and impressed the public with his single-handed phrasing.

As all nine candidates showed more-or-less the same level of virtuosity, the jury will decide between them today, taking their originality, imagination and expressivity into account. This is understandable! At the Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Competition, the stakes are high. The winner will be rewarded with a CHF 10,000 prize, a limited edition Parmigiani watch and four days of recording at the Balik Farm Studio. But most of all, he will receive incomparable recognition. The winners of second and third prize will respectively receive CHF 5,000 and CHF 3,000. The suspense continues to build!

F Derrière Oh! Tiger Mountain se cache Mathieu Poulain, un personnage au charisme détonnant. Accompagné par Pedro Lopez, son musicien couteau-suisse au look génialement ringard, le Marseillais avait la pêche hier soir!

Dans un style musical minimal, il a fait parler sa théâtralité loufoque à travers une performance énergique et décalée. Gesticulant dans tous les sens, il a même laissé le premier rang jouer avec sa guitare avant d’aller se perdre au milieu du public. Folie ou génie? Certainement un peu des deux! Il a également tout donné dans ses solos. Sales, bruts et perçants, ils n’étaient pas sans rappeler ceux d’un certain Jack White. Steve Riesen F À l’origine, il y a le bouillonnement. Celui des Noirs, la soul, le rhythm’n’blues. Fait de sueur et de grain. L’industrie popularise cette musique. Elle devient un standard de la pop. Un demi-siècle plus tard, le label Daptone renouvelle cette énergie et la fait revivre à Montreux. Le Rhodes crépite, on s’y croirait. Le batteur hésite encore sur les baguettes à utiliser et le show commence. Le show véritable, de ceux qu’on ne voit qu’à Las Vegas. Avec des stars, un animateur pareil à une ancienne vedette de NBA et des musiciens experts. Le rythme surgit, nonchalant. Le vrai groove, bien au fond du temps.

Le batteur qui attend le dernier moment pour frapper, le bassiste qui se cale sur les coups de grosse caisse. L’énergie paraît naître de cette insouciance, de cet instant où on laisse le hasard décider du meilleur moment où installer le temps. Puis, les ténors surviennent.

Charles Bradley d’abord, spectre fringuant de James Brown. La classe animale, survolant les blancs-becs qui auront joués jusqu’alors.

Puis Sharon Jones. En soul sister autoritaire, elle transforme l’aula raisonnable du Strav en cabaret sensuel. On danse, on papote, on s’amuse. C’est Montreux. On est heureux et l’on s’agite, indolemment, nostalgique des spectres de la musique noire. Laurent Küng

E Mathieu Poulain is the explosive, charismatic force behind Oh! Tiger Mountain.

Accompanied by Pedro Lopez, his versatile sidekick musician with an old-fashioned look, the Marseilles resident was in top form last night. His energetic off-the-wall performance with a minimalistic musical style showcased his extravagant theatrics. He gesticulated left, right, and center, and even let the front row play his guitar as he got lost in the crowd.

Madman or genius? Most certainly a bit of both, and he gave it his all in his solos. His dirty, crude, ear-splitting style without a doubt brings a certain Jack White to mind.

E To begin with, something was happening.

Black people, soul, rhythm’n’blues. A genre born of sweat and rough edges. The industry popularized this music. It became a standard type of pop. Half a century later, the Daptone label is renewing this energy and reviving it in Montreux. The Rhodes piano crackled and we took a step back in time. The drummer was still deciding which drumsticks to use when the show began. It was a real show, the type we only see in Las Vegas. There were stars, an MC who could have been an NBA announcer and expert musicians. The rhythm began casually. It was real groove with the rough beat you’d expect. The drummer waited until the last minute for the beat, the bassist took his cues from the big drum. The energy seemed to stem from this insouciance, from this moment in which we let chance decide the best moment for the beat. Then the tenors appeared. Charles Bradley came first, a glamorous figure who could be likened to James Brown. He’s a real man, not like the little blonds we’ve seen so far. Then there was Sharon Jones. She’s an authoritative soul sister who turned the conservative Strav into a sensual cabaret. Everyone was dancing, gossiping and having fun. This is Montreux.

Everyone is happy, boogying, laid back, and nostalgic for the black music of years gone by.

F Que représente la musique soul pour vous ?

Quand on est chanteuse, comment décrire cette musique autrement qu’en disant que c’est une sensation ? Les gens collent toutes sortes d’étiquettes sur la soul et c’est fatigant. Pour moi, la soul vient du cœur, de l’intérieur.

«L’objectif est que l’industrie de la musique reconnaisse la soul d’aujourd’hui.»

C’est quelque chose que l’on éprouve au fond de soi. Je peux chanter tous les soirs la même chanson, pourtant, ce sera chaque fois différent, et cela grâce au contact avec le public. C’est à lui qu’est destiné ce que je chante.

Quand avez-vous commencé à chanter?

Je chante depuis que je suis enfant. Je me souviens qu’on jouait aux Supremes, mes sœurs et moi. En utilisant un balai, une brosse ou un peigne en guise de micro, on faisait les choristes derrière ma sœur aînée, Doris. Ce n’était qu’un jeu, mais après j’ai eu la chance d’aller à l’école dans

le Sud et à Noël, j’ai chanté pour la Nativité. J’étais déguisée en ange et j’ai chanté « Silent night ».

C’est la première chanson que je me rappelle avoir interprétée.

Quels sont vos projets pour l’avenir ?

On est un label indépendant, et on est nous-mêmes. J’attends toujours mon premier million!

Ce n’est ni pour l’argent ni pour le glamour. Ça, tout le monde le veut.

Ce qu’on veut, nous, c’est que les gens sachent qu’il y a de la bonne musique soul. Mon avenir? Je voudrais que mon nom soit connu, comme tout le monde j’imagine.

L’objectif est que l’industrie de la musique reconnaisse la soul d’aujourd’hui. Que la soul soit reconnue par l’industrie. Qu’on ait un Award spécifique, même si ce n’est pas moi qui le gagne.

Mais l’Award du meilleur album soul, de la meilleure chanson soul, l’album de l’année, tout ça… L’année prochaine peut-être.

C’est l’un de mes buts, l’un de mes rêves.

E What does soul music mean to you?

When you’re a soul singer, how can you describe it but to say it’s a feeling? People give it so many kinds of labels, and you get tired of hearing people’s opinions and what they think it should be.

For me, soul comes from the heart, from inside. It’s something we feel deep down. I can sing the same song every night but it’s always different thanks to that connection with the audience. I sing for them.

When did you start singing?

I’ve been singing since I was a little girl. I remember I used to sing to the Supremes with my sisters. We’d use a broom, a brush, or a comb for mics, and I sang backup for my oldest sister, Doris.

It was just for fun, but then I got a chance to go to school in the South and at Christmas, I sang for a Nativity. I played an angel and I got to sing “Silent Night”.

That’s the first song I remember singing.

What are your plans for the future?

We’re an independent label and we are who we are.

I’m still waiting to make my first million! It’s not for the money or the glamor. Everyone wants that.

What we really want is for people to know that there is good soul music. My future?

“The goal is for the music industry to recognize today’s soul music.”

I want to be well-known, like everyone does I guess. The goal is for the music industry to recognize today’s soul music. For the music industry to acknowledge soul music. For us to have a special award, even if I don’t win it. As for the award for best soul album, best soul song, album of the year, all of that… maybe next year. That’s one of my goals, one of my dreams.

Ils haussent les épaules. Je dois être un allumé de plus à leur compteur. Revenu à l’air frais, je découvre le camion presque vide. À l’intérieur, la place est énorme. «On devrait faire une bouffe là-dedans un de ces jours. On peut y mettre 30 personnes facilement», je plaisante. Ils m’ignorent. D’autres flight cases attendent et doivent être déchargés. Alors perdre du temps avec un accro au monter, descendre, ce n’est pas exactement ce qui occupe ces garçons. Il est 14h30. Au final, je leur aurais collé aux basques des heures pleines. À la toute fin, pour eux, tout était exactement comme si je n’avais pas existé. La dernière salve de flight cases a été acheminée vers l’Auditorium Stravinski. Je me sentais crevé. Eux? Je n’ai pas vu quiconque partir en pause.

Well, “elevator”. It’s more like a metal chamber that goes up and down from one stage to another! Believe me.

F «Laisse-le là!» Le flight case est énorme.

Il a l’air lourd comme un âne mort. Je suis sous le préau où les camions déchargent chaque jour le matériel technique pour le Festival. «Cazzo!»

Voilà un mot que je connais bien.

En Suisse comme en France, on le prononce d’une jolie manière. Mais quelle que soit la langue employée, il conserve à chaque fois tout son sens. «Je t’ai dit de faire gaffe avec celle-là. Y a des trucs fragiles dedans.»

Le type, apparemment italien, crie sur tout ce qui bouge. Il doit être un des boss ici. Les roadies l’écoutent sans piper mot. Ambiance.

«Allez les gars, on perd pas de temps. Dès qu’on a fini, on fait une pause!» Je regarde ces gars travailler. Rapides, efficaces. Impressionnants. Cinq minutes après l’arrivée du camion au lieu de déchargement, la moitié du matériel a déjà été dirigée vers les différentes scènes et coulisses. Je suis le Staff qui pousse les flight cases, puis qui s’engouffre dans un ascenseur.

Enfin, un ascenseur… C’est plutôt un salon en métal qui monte et descend d’un étage à l’autre! Croyez-moi, en Chine, j’ai vu des appartements bien plus petits que ça.

Je me précipite dans la maison-ascenseur. Les techniciens me regardent comme si je venais d’une autre planète.

«On devrait faire une bouffe ici.»

Pour réponse, j’arbore fièrement mon badge All Access, prenant l’air du type busy. «On descend au Lab. Tu vas où?», ils me demandent.

Je n’en sais rien. L’air détaché, je réponds: «Pareil.» On me fait une place. Les portes se referment. Plus un mot. On arrive au B1. Ils se mettent à décharger. Je reste dans l’ascenseur.

“THE BIG ELEVATOR”

E “Leave it there!” The flight case is enormous and looks as heavy as 14 elephants. I’m under the covered terrace where the trucks unload technical material for the Festival every day.

“Cazzo”! I definitely recognize that word. It sounds pretty when people in Switzerland and France pronounce it. No matter what language people use, though, it always means the same thing. “I told you to watch out with that one.

There’s fragile stuff inside.” The Italian man is yelling at everything and anything that moves.

He must be one of the bosses.

The roadies listen in silence. “Come on guys.

Let’s not waste any time. As soon as we’re done with this, we can take a break!” I watch the guys at work. They’re fast. Efficient.

Impressive. Five minutes after a truck arrived

“We should have lunch here.”

Some of the apartments I saw in China could easily fit inside. I leap into the houselevator.

The technicians look at me like I’m from another planet. I proudly show them my All Access badge and act like a busy VIP. “We’re going down to the Lab. You?” they ask. I have no idea. So I nonchalantly respond, “Same.”

They make room for me, and the doors close.

There’s no more talk. We get to B1 and they start unloading. I stay in the elevator with some of the guys. “So, what are you doing?

Aren’t you getting off here?” I tell them I have to go back up because I “forgot something”.

They shrug. The probably think I’m nuts.

I get back to fresh air and the truck is just about empty. It looks massive now that there’s nothing in it. “We should have lunch in there one of these days. It could easily fit 30 people,” I joke. They ignore me. More flight cases need to be unloaded, and the guys have better things to do than waste time with an elevator addict. It’s 2:30 pm. I’ve been clinging to them for hours, but for them, it’s as if I hadn’t been here at all. The last group of flight cases heads to the Stravinski. I’m exhausted. Them? Well, I hadn’t seen anyone take a break.

«NATURAL MYSTIC»

Depuis les années 50, la recherche du divin a marqué l’oeuvre de jazzmen en quête de béatitude. Précipité des liens entre musique et mystique.

F Lorsqu’il monte sur la scène du Casino en 1974, l’air renfrogné, lunettes cerclées d’informaticien sur le nez, chemise de bucheron glissée dans un pantalon à pince et rouflaquettes comme piquées à Neil Young, l’apparence de notre homme ne traduit rien des ambitions auxquelles aspirent sa musique. Il se nomme Van Morrison. De sa trajectoire, on sait déjà l’enfance passée à Belfast, les succès décrochés avec Them et une échappée en solitaire marquée par deux chefs-d‘œuvre: Astral Weeks et Moondance.

L’Irlandais y invite à plonger dans une source d’essence mystérieuse, mystique…

Enregistré alors que se durcissait le Mouvement pour les droits civiques, ce pinacle jazz traduit aussi une remise en question – sinon une radicalisation – religieuse chez certains artistes: Art Blakey ou Yussef Lateef convertis à l’Islam, Pharoah Sanders ou Alice Coltrane tournés vers les mystiques indiennes, Sun Râ édifiant ses propres dogmes… «Le dieu blanc n’avait pu libérer le peuple noir de ses chaines? Questionnait l’écrivain James Baldwin. Peutêtre d’autres dieux le pourraient-ils?» Politique et religieux à nouveau se confondaient.

A Love Supreme C’est une banalité: le divin est au cœur de la création musicale. Il n’est de civilisation qui n’ait associé le Verbe à la Genèse. Pas une religion qui n’ait utilisé le son comme un véhicule pour toucher Dieu. Au XVIIIe siècle, l’humanisme des Lumières redéfinit la place de l’homme dans l’univers.

Hier, il vivait pour servir le Ciel.

Un principe Alors qu’à travers le rhythm’n’blues de Van Morrison ou «l’outsider music» de Moondog l’esprit céleste est interrogé à hauteur d’homme, les minimalistes cherchent à leur tour à capturer, puis restituer quelque chose comme un «principe» niché dans le divin. C’est Arno Pärt et sa quête de pureté musicale confinant au monacal, ou encore John Cage et ses compositions fondées sur le hasard comme ordre universel. Mais pour chacun de ces artistes, qu’ils soient Bach, Albert Ayler ou Henryk Górecki, demeure un mystère. De quelle source surgissent les mélodies? Est-il un canal pour les atteindre? Enfin, combien d’artistes ont évoqué leur trouble quant à l’origine des chansons qu’ils composaient comme sous la dictée… «Certains de ces titres ont comme jailli de ma conscience, expliquait Van Morrison à propos des chansons d’Astral Weeks.

Je n’ai pas pensé à ce que j’étais en train d’écrire. Parfois je regarde ce que je viens de balancer et je suis incapable d’expliquer précisément d’où ça vient ou ce que ça signifie.»

«Un «principe» niché dans le divin.»

Désormais, il n’est plus assujetti à l’ordre céleste. L’idéal musical traduit maintenant la vie terrestre avant que, au XIXe, le courant cécilianiste renoue avec l’idée d’une musique «savante» consacrée à l’expression du divin (Bruckner, etc.). Peu après, aux États-Unis, apparaissent les premiers spirituals. Par le biais de chants sacrés issus des églises afro-américaines, l’expression mystique se diffuse dans la tradition musicale des afro-descendants…

“NATURAL MYSTIC”

Since the ‘50s, the search for the divine has marked the work of jazz musicians searching for beatitude. We look at the links between music and mysticism.

E When he came on stage at the Casino in 1974, seeming sullen, wearing nerdy round glasses, a lumberjack shirt tucked into pleated front pants and sideburns that he could have stolen from Neil Young, this man’s appearance gave no clues as to the aspirations of his music. He calls himself Van Morrison. We already know the story of his childhood in Belfast, how he launched his career with Them and went solo, his career marked by two masterpieces: Astral Weeks and Moondance. This Northern Irish singer invites his listeners to dive into a mysterious, mystical source with his music.

A Love Supreme It’s a cliché, but divinity is at the heart of musical creation.

There isn’t a single civilization that hasn’t associated the Word with Creation. Not a single religion that hasn’t used sound as a vehicle for touching God. In the 18th century, the Enlightenment philosophers’ humanism redefined man’s place in the universe. Before, he existed to serve God. After, he was no longer subject to heavenly orders. Henceforth, the musical ideal communicated life on Earth until, in the 19th century, the Cecilian Movement revived the idea of “savant” music, devoted to the expression of divinity (Bruckner, etc.). Shortly after, the first spirituals emerged in the United States. Through the sacred music of African-American churches, mystical expression spread into the black American musical tradition.

Now, skipping a few years, in 1964, John Coltrane released his album A Love Supreme, a hymn of divine love that was consecrated seven years later with the construction of the Saint John Coltrane African Orthodox Church in San

Francisco. It was recorded while the civil rights movement was consolidating. This pinnacle of jazz was also about certain artists’ religious questioning, or even radicalization.

Art Blakey and Yussef Lateef converted to Islam, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane turned to Indian mystics, and Sun Râ developed his own philosophies. Writer James Baldwin wrote “The white God has not delivered them; perhaps the Black God will.” Politics and religion mixed.

A principle While the celestial spirit was being questioned on a human level through Van Morrison’s rhythm’n’blues and Moondog’s outsider music, minimalists were aiming to capture and share a sort of “principle” hidden in divinity. I mean Arno Pärt and his monastic quest for musical purity and John Cage with his compositions based on chance as universal order.

But whether we are talking about Bach, Albert Ayler or Henryk Górecki, where there’s music, there’s a mystery.

Where do melodies come from? Is there a path for reaching them? And how many artists have explained how they were troubled by songs that they composed almost as though they were being dictated? Talking about Astral Weeks, Van Morrison explained, “Some of these songs just came from my subconscious. I didn’t even think about what I was writing. Sometimes I look at what I just wrote and I can’t explain exactly where it came from or what it means.”

des coulisses: «Je travaille mes portraits au grand angle, pour capter l’atmosphère, le quotidien des tournées derrière la façade du spectacle. J’aime les décors lorsqu’ils sont glauques, les musiciens fatigués et qui puent.»

Cette approche doit beaucoup à Richard Bellia, son mentor et ami. Le vétéran de la photographie rock lui conseille très tôt de travailler en argentique.

C’est lui qui l’initie au grain du noir et blanc et à l’impératif de spontanéité: «Je n’aime pas

la sophistication. Je travaille comme un manouche. Je fais des photos brutes, assez proches du snapshot.» À la différence de ses collègues convertis aux appareils numériques, le clic vintage de son Leica R8 ne mitraille pas. Charles Bradley arrive. Mehdi Benkler pose un genou à terre. Gâchette économe et sensible, il estime son modèle, guettant le bon angle, l’éloquence d’un regard, l’imprévu d’un mouvement.

F Il voulait faire esthéticienne, comme sa mère, plaisante-t-il en caressant son visage glabre.

Affalé dans un transat en attendant Charles Bradley, Mehdi Benkler raconte sa vie dans un rire roublard. Le masque désinvolte ne suffit pas à cacher sa finesse: Mathieu Jaton ne s’était pas trompé en l’engageant l’année dernière après l’avoir repéré dans une exposition. Comptant parmi les photographes officiels du Montreux Jazz Festival pour la deuxième année consécutive, Mehdi Benkler est aussi le guitariste des Forks. Ce soir, à la Rock Cave, ils défendront leur premier album éponyme, enregistré grâce aux cagnottes Wemakeit, et qui se taille tranquillement une place sur les affiches estivales.

«On a choisi de s’appeler les Forks, parce que le groupe vient de Vevey. C’est la ville de Nestlé, qui fait des choses extraordinaires, comme planter des fourchettes dans le lac. Nous, on fait des choses encore plus extraordinaires,

comme boire des bières devant la Fourchette,» explique-t-il, fidèle à sa défense caustique.

«Je travaille comme un manouche.»

Sur scène, il tombera la grimace chafouine et s’absorbera dans les salves cosmiques de leur rock psyché. Les poignets chargés de grigris, tee-shirt Led Zeppelin et godasses élimées, Mehdi Benkler, 26 ans seulement, a l’avantage de connaître son sujet: «Peut-être que l’expérience de la scène me permet de capter certains réflexes chez les musiciens… » dit-il en haussant les épaules, avant de raconter comment les Kills l’ont invité, en 2012, à les suivre sur plusieurs dates. La nonchalance est son charme diurne.

Mais dans l’obscurité des salles de concerts, dans la nuit hermétique de son labo photo, Mehdi Benkler rétracte sa pupille hilare.

Aux univers léchés des studios et des flashs, il préfère la crudité

But in the darkness of concert halls and the pitch black of his photo lab, Mehdi Benkler turns off his amused front. He prefers the rawness of backstage to the world of studios and flashes where everyone’s sucking up.

E As he caresses his smooth face, he jokes that he wanted to be a beautician like his mom.

Slumped in a sun lounger waiting for Charles Bradley, Mehdi Benkler tells his life story with a sly laugh. His nonchalant facade is not enough to hide his subtlety.

Mathieu Jaton was quite right to hire him after spotting his work in an exhibition last year.

This is the second year that Mehdi Benkler has figured among the Montreux Jazz Festival’s official photographers. He’s also the Forks’ guitarist. Tonight at the Rock Cave, they will present their eponymous first album, recorded thanks to crowdfunding on Wemakeit. It comfortably carved itself a niche on the summer’s circuit. “We decided to call ourselves the Forks because the group comes from Vevey.

That’s Nestlé’s town. They do extraordinary things like planting forks in the lake. We do even more extraordinary things like drinking beers in front of the fork,” he explains, keeping up his withering tone. On stage, he’ll lose his suspicious expression and become engrossed in the cosmic burst of their psychedelic rock. Mehdi Benkler is only 26. His wrists are covered with bracelets, he’s wearing a Led Zeppelin t-shirt and his shoes are tatty. He’s got the advantage of knowing his subject. “Maybe my experience on stage enables me to capture certain reflexes musicians have,” he says with a shrug,

“I work like a gypsy.”

“I take wide angle portraits to capture the feeling, the day-to-day atmosphere of tours behind the facade of the show. I like seedy décor and tired, smelly musicians.”

His approach owes a lot to Richard Bellia, his mentor and friend.

The veteran of rock advised him very early on to work in black and white. It was him who introduced Mehdi Benkler to the grainy quality of black and white and the importance of spontaneity.

“I don’t like sophistication. I work like a gypsy. I take raw photos, pretty close to snapshots.”

Unlike his colleagues who have converted to digital cameras, he is in no rush with his vintage Leica R8. Charles Bradley arrives.

Mehdi Benkler puts one knee on the ground. He’s economical and sensitive with his shutter.

He takes his model’s measure, chooses the right angle, the communicativeness of a look, the unexpectedness of a movement.
