What a Fest! The Piano Forte

Jessie J allie les prouesses vocales de Beyoncé, le son diversifié de Gwen Stefani et la fougue de Pink.

A 11 ans, elle monte sur scène pour la première fois dans la comédie musicale Whistle Down the Wind.

Elle connaît le succès en écrivant pour Chris Brown ou Miley Cyrus, puis en sortant son album Who You Are, élu son de l’année 2011 par la BBC. English singer Jessie J is combining the vocal prowess of Beyoncé, the genre-hopping sounds of Gwen Stefani, and the feisty attitude of P!nk.

She started her musical career at the age of 11, being cast in Whistle Down the Wind. She later found success as a songwriter for Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus, before releasing her own album Who You Are, for which she was awarded BBC Sound of 2011.

WHAT A FEST !

THE PIANO FORTE Quel est le point commun entre Les Variations Goldberg, un bûcheron finlandais et un jeune éphèbe allemand ? Le piano, très chers. En deux semaines et cinq concerts, le château de Chillon et son acoustique racée se sont fait l’écho pluriel d’une programmation éclectique et exigeante, qui s’est clôturée hier soir sur l’accent plus « rock » des polonais Piotr Orzechowski et Leszek Mozdzer, respectivement lauréat 2011 du Solo Piano Competition et actuel Président du Jury. Si l’on pouvait lire les noms de Chopin, Schubert, Bach et Debussy sur les programmes du Festival, la Fondation Montreux Jazz 2 ne s’est pas pour autant contentée d’offrir une lecture classique de ces fondamentaux. « Le piano est un instrument qui couvre tous les spectres géographiques et sociaux. Nous oeuvrons à le faire entendre dans sa diversité, loin des carcans types – classique ou jazz – auxquels se limitent parfois les idées reçues. C’est donc à la fois un espace de liberté pour les artistes, et de découverte pour le public », explique Stéphanie-Aloysia Moretti, responsable des activités culturelles et artistiques de la Fondation Montreux Jazz 2. Pour colorer ce panel virtuose, elle s’est tournée vers de jeunes pianistes curieux d’ouvrir leur discipline à des influences fortuites ou avouées, en tout cas fructueuses. Samedi, le percussionniste suisso-turc Burhan Oçal proposait avec le pianiste Alexei Botvinov une relecture contemporaine du chef d’œuvre de Bach à la lumière de ses racines orientales. Lundi, c’est le charismatique Iiro Rantala, directement sorti de Walden ou la vie dans les bois, qui bouleversait une audience captivée. Le lendemain, c’était au tour de Michael Wollny, du trio allemand {em}, de donner à entendre sa propre histoire de la musique. Dans l’enceinte bucolique de la forteresse, sous la chape mordorée d’un ciel couchant vert-de-gris, ce jeune pianiste bavarois

au jeu plus délicat que les doigts d’une brodeuse a fait, en un peu plus d’une heure, le tour de ses influences. De Schubert à Kraftwerk, il a donné la preuve que ces deux pôles – le romantisme classique d’une part, la musique assistée par ordinateur de l’autre – pouvaient correspondre sans s’offenser.

A mi-chemin entre le génie autrichien et les papes du krautrock, l’extrait d’Hexentanz (tiré de son album éponyme en anglais Dance of the Witches) nous envoûtait d’un premier frisson. « Je m’inspire beaucoup du cinéma et des univers narratifs pour composer et jouer. De ce point de vue là, je crois que cet endroit est l’un des plus beaux où il m’ait été donné de me produire », confiait Michael à l’issue de son concert, clôturé en rappel par une interprétation orgastique de Bjork.

What do the Goldberg Variations, a Finnish lumberjack, and a young German Adonis have in common? Why, the piano, of course! With five concerts over two weeks, Chillon Castle and its distinguished acoustics were the multifarious echo of an eclectic and exacting program of performances. Last night’s closing concert ended things on a “Rock” note with performances by Polish pianists Piotr Orzechowski and Leszek Mozdzer, respectively the winner of the 2011 Solo Piano Competition and this year’s President of the Jury. While names like Chopin, Schubert, Bach, and Debussy figured prominently on the Festival program, the Fondation Montreux Jazz 2 certainly wasn’t content to present nothing more than a classic interpretation of these fundamental composers’ works. Stéphanie-Aloysia Moretti, in charge of cultural and artistic activities at the Fondation Montreux Jazz 2, explained: “The piano is an instrument that covers every geographical and social spectrum. We strive to reveal the piano in all its diversity, freed from

the chains (Classical, Jazz…) in which it is often bound by preconceived ideas. We therefore create a space that provides freedom for the artists and discoveries for the audience.” To add dimension to this panel of virtuosos, she looked to young pianists with an interest in opening up their discipline to influences which, be they accidental or avowed, are in any event unarguably fruitful. On Saturday, the SwissTurkish percussionist Burhan Oçal presented, along with pianist Alexei Botvinov, a modern-day rereading of Bach’s masterpiece in light of its Eastern roots. On Monday the charismatic Iiro Rantala, straight out of On Walden Pond, deeply moved his completely entranced audience. The next day it was the turn of Michael Wollny, from the German trio {em}, to present his very own History of Music. Surrounded by the castle’s picturesque walls, the setting sun throwing off rays of bronze and verdigris overhead, the young Bavarian pianist conducted a guided tour of his many influences, his delicate fingers weaving an elaborate tapestry of sound. From Schubert all the way to Kraftwerk, he provided conclusive proof that these two extremes—classical romanticism on the one hand, computerassisted music on the other—could work together without discord. Somewhere in-between the genius from Austria and the standard-bearers of Krautrock, the excerpt from “Hexentanz” (from the album of the same name, Dance of the Witches) cast its spell on the shivering audience from the outset. “I am greatly inspired by the cinema and by narrative universes in order to compose and to perform. From that perspective, I believe that this venue is one of the most beautiful places I have ever had the pleasure of performing,” shared Michael after his concert, closed out by an orgastic encore performance of a piece by Bjork.

NILE RODgERS Qu’est-ce qui nous attend à la FREAK OUT! Montreux «All night» Dance Party?

J’essaie de réaliser la folle expérience de l’évolution de la Dance music en live. Je veux montrer comment la musique a évolué depuis l’époque de La Fièvre du samedi soir, jusqu’à l’Electro Dance actuelle. Je veux parcourir l’histoire des musiques house, disco, de la pop synthétique des années ‘80 et de la pop synthétique actuelle.

Comment cette idée est-elle née ?

Claude est venu à New York et m’a demandé de revenir cette année. La dernière fois, l’événement a été tellement mémorable que je ne voyais pas comment faire mieux. Comment surpasser l’hommage à Ahmet Ertegün ? C’était du nonstop, vraiment énorme ! Claude voulait que la soirée soit en mon honneur cette fois mais je lui ai répondu : « Je ne veux pas être à l’honneur, laissez-moi plutôt rendre hommage à autre chose, à la musique. » Avez-vous déjà réalisé un tel projet auparavant ?

Nous avions fait quelque chose de semblable à Ibiza il y a deux semaines : le 123 Festival. C’était la première fois que nous avions un mélange de musique live et de DJ. Je pense qu’il y a quelque chose d’intrinsèquement positif dans cette formule. Il se peut qu’il y ait quelques accrocs parce qu’on n’a pas encore déterminé comment mêler les deux types de public et les deux types d’expression artistique.

Comment avez-vous choisi les artistes qui vous accompagnent ?

La plupart d’entre eux sont des amis avec qui j’ai déjà travaillé. Je connais Mark Ronson depuis qu’il a environ 9 ans. Johnny Marr est devenu un très bon ami. Anita Baker a joué avec nous pour la première fois il y a quelques mois. Je viens de rencontrer Elly

Jackson (La Roux, ndlr) mais nous sommes récemment devenus très proches. Je reviens d’une tournée avec Alison Moyet. Je connais Taylor Dayne depuis longtemps. Les artistes des années ‘80 gagnaient si bien leur vie dans les clubs qu’ils n’ont pas eu besoin de s’ouvrir aux salles de concert plus classiques. Bien que les gens pensent que c’est impossible, je vais créer une atmosphère qui permette justement de concilier les deux. Benjamin Keller

What is the FREAK OUT! Montreux «All night» Dance Party going to be like?

What I’m trying to accomplish is the crazy experiment of the evolution of Dance music live. I want to show the music that’s evolved from those early days, like Saturday Night Fever, taking us all the way up to Modern Electronic Dance Music.

I want to show the history of House, Disco, 80’s Synth Pop, and modern Synth Pop. How did the project start?

The project started with Claude coming to New York, and saying he wanted me to come back this year. And I said: “The last time I was here, it was such a big event, how do I top that?

How do I top the Ahmet Ertegün tribute?” It was non stop, it was huge! So Claude said: “now we would like to honor you”, and I said: “I don’t want to be honored, don’t honor me, let me honor something else, let me honor the music.”

Have you ever done anything like this before?

The closest we got to it was in Ibiza two weeks ago. We did something called the 123 Festival. It’s the first time they’ve ever tried to have live music and DJs. I think that there’s something inherently right about that. We may have rough edges because we still have to figure out how the two audiences and the two art forms go together.

How did you choose the artists you’ll be performing with?

Most of them are friends I’ve already worked with. I’ve known Mark Ronson since he was 9 years old or something. Johnny Marr has become a great friend of mine. Anita Baker performed with us for the first time a few months ago. I just met Elly Jackson (La Roux – Ed.) but we’ve become very close lately. We were just on tour with Alison Moyet. I’ve known Taylor Dayne for a long time. A lot of what happened with the 80’s artists was because they’ve made such a good living by doing track dates and playing in clubs, that their world hasn’t expanded to a more ‘concert-y’ type of venue. People don’t think that it goes together. But I’m going to try to create an atmosphere where it actually does.

living legend « Je mène une vie simple. Roulements de tambour, on m’annonce, je monte sur scène et je chante. » C’est là l’une des citations les plus célèbres de Tony Bennett. Dans l’atmosphère intimiste du Miles Davis Hall, le crooner a tenu parole, les roulements de tambours en moins.

Dès la première chanson, le public était conquis. La voix et le charisme du chanteur de 85 ans ont séduit un public qui, après chaque chanson, manifestait son approbation à grand renfort d’applaudissements et de standing ovations. Comme pour remercier les spectateurs, Tony s’est joint à eux en battant des mains et en leur jetant quelques baisers, allant même jusqu’à user de « jazz hands ». « C’est un honneur d’être en Suisse, un pays qui aime…Charlie Chaplin », a-t-il dit. C’est rempli d’émotion qu’il a raconté avoir reçu une lettre d’un compositeur dont il avait repris une des chansons. Elle lisait : « Cher M. Bennett, merci d’avoir donné une nouvelle vie à ma chanson et de l’avoir rendue célèbre dans le monde entier. » La missive était signée « Charlie Chaplin ». L’anecdote a fait mouche dans le public, qui a ensuite pu entendre « Smile ».

Au cours de la soirée, la légende de la musique a également été rejoint sur scène par sa fille Antonia, offrant au public du Miles Davis Hall une prestation qui, à coup sûr, restera gravée dans les mémoires.

One of Tony Bennett’s most famous quotes is: “I have a simple life. I mean, you just give me a drum-roll, they announce my name, and I come out and sing”. In front of an intimate audience at the Miles Davis Hall, minus the drum roll, he stood true to his words.

From the first song, Bennett had the audience completely at his mercy. The 85-year-old’s heartmelting voice and overwhelming charisma dominated the room. After each song, the audience showed their appreciation with applause and a standing ovation.

In gratitude, Tony joined in with the applause, blew kisses and even showed off his jazz hands.

“It’s an honor to be in Switzerland, a country that loves…Charlie Chaplin,” he said. Full of emotion, he went on to explain that he had once received a letter from a composer whose song he had used, which read, “Dear Mr. Bennett, thank you for resurrecting my song and making it known all around the world.” The note was signed by Charlie Chaplin. The anecdote, which was adored by the audience, was followed by a magical performance of the song ‘Smile’.

Quelle est votre journée type?

Je n’ai pas de journée type : mon domaine est tellement vaste que c’est difficile d’avoir un planning fixe. Au début du Festival, il faut plutôt gérer les problèmes de tout le monde. Après, ça devient plus une routine. J’essaie de me mettre à la place du festivalier pour analyser le Festival en termes d’infrastructure, de visibilité, de propreté, des services disponibles, des bars, de la restauration, etc. Je suis plutôt un coordinateur. Il faut mettre l’accent sur le fait que c’est un travail d’équipe, ce n’est jamais assez précisé. Je suis très bien entouré, par des personnes qui ont des domaines de compétences très spécifiques, alors que moi, je suis quelqu’un de très généraliste.

Depuis votre arrivée au Festival, il y a 8 ans, y a-t-il eu une grande évolution ?

Oui, c’est clair et net. En termes d’infrastructure, de confort pour le visiteur, ça a beaucoup changé. Par exemple, quand je suis arrivé ici, on m’a dit : « Impossible, on ne peut pas faire de restaurants à l’intérieur. » Depuis, on a créé la Table du Montreux Jazz Café et Caviar House est venu. Aussi, sur le lac, on a créé la terrasse à tapas, le Point Vert, etc. On a fait pas mal pour le public. Rien que dans l’aspect esthétique, ce que la communication a fait, ce qu’on a fait, tous, c’est quand même un sacré changement. J’espère qu’on fera encore mieux dans les années qui viennent!

Vous co-programmez également le Montreux Jazz Café. Satisfait de la programmation de cette année ?

Oui ! En fait, je ne suis jamais vraiment satisfait ! J’ai toujours des frustrations sur ce que je n’ai pas pu faire. Bien sûr, je suis hyper content d’avoir fait venir Lescop, qui a donné un concert

que j’ai vraiment adoré. Je suis très content de la soirée d’hier : Active Child et Other Lives. Je suis aussi étonné de Kavinsky et de SebastiAn : ça a cartonné. Ce qui me fait surtout plaisir, c’est quand tu arrives, que la salle est pleine et que ça gueule : c’est bon de voir que les gens s’amusent !

Quand tu vois tout le monde en train de danser sur un truc que tu as programmé, c’est ce qui me fait dire que j’ai envie de continuer.

What is your typical day like?

I don’t really have a typical day, because my responsibilities cover such a wide range of activities that it is hard to even have a set schedule. At the beginning of the Festival, I mostly deal with everybody’s problems. After a while, things start to settle down a bit. I try to think like a festival-goer in order to analyze the Festival in terms of infrastructure, visibility, and cleanliness…as well as the availability of services—bars, restaurants, and so forth.

I’m really a coordinator. I would like to make abundantly clear that this is a team effort—that can’t possibly be overstated. I am surrounded by a great team of people with very specific skillsets, while I am very much a generalist.

Since your arrival at the Montreux Jazz Festival eight years ago, have there been a lot of changes?

Yes, absolutely. In terms of infrastructure, in visitor comfort, there have been big changes. For example, when I arrived, I was told: “Impossible, there is no way we can have indoor restaurants.”

Since then, we created the Table du Montreux Jazz Café, and Caviar House moved in. Also, along the lakefront, we set up the Terrasse à Tapas, the Point Vert, etc. We have done a lot for the

public. Esthetically, what Communication has done, what we have all done, that represents a huge evolution. It is my hope that in the years to come we will do even better!

You are co-programming the Montreux Jazz Café. Are you satisfied with the program this year?

Yes! Well, actually, I am never completely satisfied…I am always frustrated by what I have not been able to accomplish. Of course, I am super happy to have gotten Lescop, who did a concert that I truly adored. I am very happy about tonight’s show: Active Child and Other Lives. That’s really a great evening. I was amazed by Kavinsky and SebastiAn and the huge success of that show. My favorite thing is when you show up, the place is full of people and they are all shouting—it’s awesome to see people having so much fun! When you see everyone dancing to an act that you booked, that really makes me want to keep on doing this.

FLASHBACK

Depuis le début des années 80, je rêvais que Grace Jones viennent à Montreux. Son extravagance totale m’a séduit instantanément lorsque je l’ai vue à New-York pour la première fois. Since the early 80’s I had dreamed of bringing Grace Jones to Montreux. Her total extravagance immediately seduced me when I saw her for the first time in New York. Her 2009 concert in Miles Davis Hall lived up to all my expectations! I can’t wait to see her with Nile and Mark for the FREAK OUT Night!
