on four years ago, I met an oldVietnamVeteranandhis dog, anditchangedmylife. Andalthoughtherearestilla few empty parts of my life yet to make it whole, who knows what the next deviation from habit will bring.
Denny’swasrightnextdoor I decided to have breakfast, so I stopped. I ordered a small breakfast slam to which I added hash browns and coffee Denny’s of course, is the domain where those who are forced to pennypincharedignifyably able to come and have breakfast, lunch, or dinner, that doesn’t necessarily break the bank. It’s also a place where each waitress has a story While I was there I witnessed an incident, where a welcoming neighbors ladies group, whousetheirmeetingroom each month for their board meetings.
Evidently there had been a mix-up in the room reservations, where a men’s group was overbooked, so the ladies had to wait ten or fifteen minutes for them to finish up and leave. When everythinghadbeencleared, andtheladieswereaboutto entertheroom, onemember of the group uttered a comment that wasn’t well received by one of the servers, and the employee chose to take offense and comment back. It was a heated exchange. No racial slursweremadepresent, but there were tongue lashings thrownonbothsides. Andif it were being judged on punches, the waitress got in the most of ‘The Dozen,’ barbs.
I don’t think my latest habit deviation episode will changemylife, butIhopeit changes restaurant policies, to stress the importance of calm when employees are dealing with difficult customers. Look, I don’t want anyone to be fired, especially based on my accountoftheincident, butI don’t think the employees are not plugging in the equation about the potential impact of losing income to the restaurant's bottom line. The impressions of waitressesreallymatter, andthey are the face of the company during customer interactions. And they should be trained to handle situations with difficult customers, at the very least having a supervisor or manager be called-inbeforethesituation escalates.
And the variables that caused the lady to utter the comment that started the whole thing, can be limitless. Whoknowswhat caused her patience to be tried that morning? A sick grandchild, or an argument with her husband? Did she wakeuponthewrongsideof the bed? Or she could be that usual a-hole customer that is never happy despite everything you do to make thesituationright. Anyway you point it, the customer was wrong, and the waitress'sreactionwaswrong.
dollars?” And someone at theConroeDenny’sisgonna havetoanswerthatquestion. Of course it’s going to be embarrassing, but it's gonna havetobedone.
After the ladies group left the waitresses' colleagues were generally supportive of her actions, but they didn’t register the magnitude of the situation, and it’s understandable You want camaraderie amongst workmates, but being supportive of the wrongbehaviorcanbemore bad than good. What will happen with the next customerthatishavingabad day and says or does the wrongthing? Denny’sisno ‘Mel’s Dinner’ where waitresses can go around yelling “Kiss My Grits,” to anyone they please. It’s a real business that needs real money to survive, and restaurantstaffallneedtobe acutely aware how even the most obscure of incidents can have meaningful negative impacts on a business.
thatIthoughtthatChick-filA had a great ‘hiring formula,’ and even though there are other metrics and formulas to partially define the task, trainingof individuals and how well they respond to ‘unruly customers,’sotosay, shouldbepart oftheyieldratio.
Personally, I believe that a questionnaire should be set upon applicants to judge their initial reactions to possible situations in dealingwithcustomers. For me, it's a great way to set a baseline of the employee's knowledge in regards to possible customer interactions even before setting eyes on anyone who walks through the door expecting tobeserved.

The ladies entered the room, where there were 15 to 20 in the group, ifnotmore. Ithought the incident over at that point, and went back to my work It wasn’t a few minutes later there was a line of ladies that started filing out to leave, without even being served water Andit’satthatpointIgotto thinking, thatonlastminute deviationsthatImaketomy habits, something usual, essentially remarkable, happens. Each of those ladies from the welcome group have opinions, and chances are they are members of other groups as well. They gotochurch, andhavehouse parties. They go out to eat forlunchwithfriends. And youdon’twanttobehearing about “Girl, let me tell you …” stories about a Denny’s waitresswhodrewtheireof a ladies group, because the lady with the chip on her shoulder will be looking wronged, when she actually has equal skin in the game. Now, I don’t know the first thing about running a restaurant, norastoreofany kind. And as far as questions, I’ll leave that up to restaurant therapists to determine I mean, how hard can it be to come up with plausible scenarios to quiz current or potential servers. I just described a real life one in the first part of this piece. But I think it important for supervisors and managers to routinely interactwiththeirchargesto furtherreinforcetrainingfor betteroutcomes.
My real point in this piece is not to demonize or condemn either party I don’t like to be angry It takes too much energy I want to love not hate, to promote not disdain. A lot of us set self-limiting expectations upon ourselves. I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend celebrating with their families and loved ones At the time of this writing, wearestillinAustin finishing up our important second called special legislativesession.
First, House Bill 18, which I am a coauthor of, makes it clear that lawmakers shouldn't be fundraising for their campaigns when they skip town to break quorum. When a legislator flees the state to block the people's business they should not turn around and use that time to collect campaign checks or spend political money on hotel rooms and airfare. Texans expectustoshowup, doour jobs, andfightforthem, not turn a political stunt into a fundraisingopportunity HB 18 is about restoring accountability and making sure the Legislature works for the people, not against them. This week the Texas House advanced three key measures that put accountability, election integrity, and the rule of law first. I wasproudtohelpauthorand supporteachone, andIwant to share why these bills and resolutions matter for Texans.
lawmakers cannot abandon t

Second, House Resolution 128, which I am also proud to coauthor, strengthens the House rules to prevent future quorumbusting stunts Democrats left the state during the first called special session this year to grind the people's business to a halt. HR 128 makessurethereareserious consequences for walking away from duty Under this resolution, members who are absent in order to obstruct the legislative process will face penalties such as steep fines, loss of positions within the house, recalculation of seniority, and even the forfeiture of their operating budgets that pay their staffs These
Together thesemeasures reaffirm our commitment to transparency, accountability, andconservativevalues. Whether it's making sure lawmakers do their jobs, safeguarding our elections, or holding the line against obstruction, the Texas House is delivering for the people. On September 1st many bills we passed during the regular session officially becamelaw
I'm proud to help author and support these bills and resolutions and I'll keep fighting every day for the conservative priorities that matter most to Texans. It is an honor to serve House District16.

For the second year, The Woodlands Art Council sponsored a wonderful event where young artists from 9-18 (3rd-12thgrade)viefora booth to hock their wares. It was cloudy, but muggy this past Saturday, and TW’s Market Street was filled with 40 students, eager to show off their art, to answer questions, and evenselltheirpieces. Just to be invited to Market Squareisanhonorforthese young artists, after going

The art is reasonably priced comingfromyounghands, andeachartisthasdifferent ideasinregardstothesales of their pieces. For one young lady it s buying ballet shoes; for others it’s buying more supplies to maketheircreations;afew save their money while others buy tablet computers or game gear, and the possibilities are limitless. Interestingly, very few of the participants want to explore art as a career, whichisreasonable, seeing asthesuccessrateishitand miss,andhavingaback-up just in case is more than acceptable.
The students’art was diverse and flew in all directions, from knitters and crocheters, to those who sketched and painted, tothosewhocreateddigital prints, to artificial flower creation, Christmas ornaments, ear rings, necklaces, bracelets, original art writing tablets,
