October gardening with Ash Moor Nursery
1. As your summer pots and baskets start dying off, replant with winter flowering pansies, violas, primulas, heathers, and bulbs.
2. Divide herbaceous perennials, such as Agapanthus, Geranium, Helianthus, Hemerocallis and Lysimachia every two to three years to maintain health and vigour.
3. Take cuttings of shrubby herbs, such as rosemary, lemon verbena and thyme.
4. Divide established rhubarb crowns which have become overcrowded. Rhubarb generally needs little maintenance, apart from removing flower stems and faded leaves, and mulching in spring.
5. Create habitats for hibernating wildlife, and leave areas alone to avoid disturbing anything. Make piles of logs or install a hedgehog house.
This month at the nursery we will finish potting up all the herbaceous perennial and shrub liners into 2 or 3 litre pots, these will overwinter in the polytunnels until it’s warm enough to put them outside in the spring.
We are also taking orders for winter hanging baskets if you would like yours refilled.
Until next month, Jenny Howells
