All the King’s hens! Charles adopts local charity’s one millionth rescue hen

The Rose Ash based British Hen Welfare Trust say they’re cockahoop that their millionth hen to be rehomed, has been adopted by His Majesty The King.

The charity’s founder Jane Howorth told Molton Monthly Magazine, “Yes, it really happened and yes, I do keep having to pinch myself so I know it’s not a dream. The excitement still hasn’t blown over!”

Named Henrietta by King Charles III, the former battery hen will spend the rest of her life living at Highgrove Gardens in Gloucestershire, along with 30 other hens.

“It goes without saying that this simply would not have happened without you,

our supporters,” added Jane. “I really cannot thank you enough for what you’ve helped this charity achieve, and it makes me so excited about what we can go on to do in the future.”

Henrietta travelled in a hand-crafted carrier (pictured below and right) created by award-winning British fashion designer, Lulu Guinness. Highgrove Gardens surround the much-loved private residence of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Designer Lulu Guinness said it became a labour of love, “The carrier, which we named ‘Hengrove’ was meticulously crafted with every detail carefully considered to ensure Henrietta’s comfort and safety.” Lulu handpainted intricate greenery patterns inspired by the facade of Highgrove, the hens’ new royal home.

Charity founder Jane Howorth with Henrietta and her bespoke handmade carrier, “fit for a queen (hen)!”
