Molton Monthly Magazine - November 2025
Welcome to the November edition of Molton Monthly Magazine. It seems crazy to say, because I’m writing this in mid October, but this issue is feeling very festive already and the countdown to ‘you-know-what’ is well and truly on!
It was a great honour to see Anne, Princess Royal, visit South Molton to meet the team at British Wool as they celebrated their 75th anniversary. We really do have some incredible innovative businesses in our area.
What an achievement for former South Molton Rugby Football Club player Emma Sing, as she picked up a World Cup winners’ medal, capping a stellar season for her.
The December edition of Molton Monthly Magazine will be delivered a little late this year, around December 3rd - 7th. This is because the South Molton Christmas lights switch-on is a couple weeks later than normal on November 28th and I need to wait for photos for my festive issue.
This means there are a few events listings for early December in this month’s what’s on section so that you don’t miss out.

The three Monarchs of the Moor
by Steve Creech
Autumn is the season of the deer ‘rut’ on Exmoor, when the roar of the stags bolving can be heard echoing across the valleys for miles around as they compete to mate with hinds, starting a new cycle of life. Our photo of the month shows three stags lined-up and ready for action!
“I was very lucky to take this split second shot on one of my walks near Exe Head,” said Steve Creech, who describes himself as a keen hobbyist photographer. “Both my wife and I love our Exmoor countryside, and explore it many times a week hoping to get that one shot that might be of interest to our local community and for people further afield.”
Steve has a passion for wildlife, especially Red Deer, which he follows through the seasons.
Whether it’s wildlife like this, rural life, nature, a landscape or seascape, special events, sports, a local character or something else - please keep emailing us your pictures. Royal visit marks 75 years of British Wool at South Molton
The Princess Royal helped mark the 75th anniversary of British Wool with a visit to its site at Pathfields Business Park in South Molton on Wednesday, October 15th.
Andrew Hogley, chief executive of British Wool, said, “It was an enormous honour to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, to our South Molton depot in this milestone year. Her lifelong support for British farming and her deep understanding of the UK’s fashion and textile sector made this a truly special day for everyone involved.”
“She was certainly very knowledgeable about the company and wool production. It was a pleasure to meet her,” added South Molton councillor David Worden.
Princess Anne in South Molton - photo British Wool During her visit, Princess Anne, who is President of the UK Fashion and Textile Association, toured the depot, met staff and local farmers, and heard how British Wool is driving greater use of natural, traceable fibres in fashion, furnishings and interiors.
To commemorate the anniversary, she unveiled a plaque and was presented with a handcrafted shepherd’s crook by British Wool chairman Jim Robertson, symbolising the organisation’s heritage and close ties with the farming community.
“Our British wool has been woven through generations of farmers and makers since 1950, and it continues to play a vital role in sustainable fashion and interiors today,” said Andrew Hogley. “The Princess Royal’s visit is a fitting tribute to an industry that is both proud of its past and optimistic about its future.”

Carnival brings colour to town
Hundreds of people lined the streets of South Molton to witness the sights and sounds of the colourful 2025 carnival parade on Saturday, September 27th.
“Many thanks to everyone who helped to make this years carnival a huge success,” said Kim Maxted from the volunteer organising committee. “The weather was kind and the streets were packed with people. The Pannier Market was full of food vendors and free rides for children.”
This was the second year of the South Molton Carnival in its current format and planning is already underway for 2026. Organisers thanked the many volunteers, sponsors, entrants and supporters.
“We urge you to support our fundraising as this enables us to provide free entertainment for the children, and we very much look forward to seeing you all again on Saturday, September 26th 2026!” added Kim.

Emma is on top of the world!
Tributes have been pouring in for local rugby star Emma Sing, after she helped England’s women clinch the World Cup for the first time since 2014.
“We are super proud of her,” mum Wendy Sing told Molton Monthly Magazine. “The atmosphere at Twickenham was incredible - unbelievable! Being able to watch a home World Cup victory is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Emma played in several key matches in the run-up to the thrilling final against Canada on Saturday, September 27th - the Red Roses running out 33-13 winners. Afterwards she joined teammates to receive her gold medal (pictured right) and join in the celebrations on and off the pitch following the match.
Golden girl - Emma Sing with her winners’ medal
A spokesman for the Red Roses said, “Emma is known for her impeccable kicking game and astute positional play, making her a reliable player for club and country.”
A former South Molton Community College pupil, the 24 year-old has been playing rugby since the age of six.
“We have been closely following her rugby career and are incredibly proud of her achievements. She is an inspiration to young women everywhere - not just North Devonand is a testament to how far hard work can take you,” said Tinu Watkins, who is director of expressive literacy at South Molton Community College. “We hope this inspires more girls and women to take part in sports!”
In addition to her World Cup winners’ medal, Emma has won three back-to-back premiership championships with her club Gloucester-Hartpury and ended last season as the league’s top scorer. Not only is she a top-flight rugby player, she completed a degree in bio veterinary science at Hartpury University.

Otter charity ‘evicted’
It seemed like a dream come true four years ago, when the UK Wild Otter Trust was offered a home outside Kings Nympton which featured in the seminal 1979 film ‘Tarka the Otter’. But on September 18th they were given notice to leave, and return the site (right) to its original state.
“I am grateful for the space the landlords have afforded us over the last four years, but it is still devastating to be told to leave after such longstanding reassurances that we were safe,” said charity founder Dave Webb, who must also leave his home at the centre. “I truly thought we had struck gold being so close to where Tarka the Otter was filmed and having access to the land for the centre. That adds an extra sting.”
The award-winning UK Wild Otter Trust has become a world leader in the care for this iconic species, and such is the love for the North Devon based charity, supporters quickly offered a new local site - and raised double the initial £15,000 target needed to complete the move. Without this support, the volunteer-run organisation might have been forced to close.
Work is already underway to dismantle and move the centre, while continuing to care for 19 rescued otters with more arriving as winter approaches. Help is still urgently needed, as the move - including restoring the current siteneeds to be completed in four months.
“My priority, as always, is the cubs,” added Dave. “Please, dig deep and help us protect the UK’s otters and save our charity.”
All the money raised goes towards the rescue and rehabilitation of otters, all staff are unpaid volunteers. To make a donation go to: crowdfunder.co.uk/p/help-save-ourotter-charity
Rally club’s record donations
South Molton Vintage Rally Club gave a record £30,000 to 22 charities and good causes at their annual presentation evening at the Assembly Rooms on October 11th.
The money was raised at events throughout the year, but most of it came from the annual rally now held at Rackenford.
Chairman Rob Kelland said, “Thanks to all our members, friends and supporter for your generous help at the club’s activities during the year, especially our two day rally.”
Among the organisations supported this year: Children’s Hospice South West received £5,000, Devon Air Ambulance Trust and ChemoHero were given £3,500 each.
Other recipients: Families in Grief; Young Lives Vs Cancer; South Molton Junior Football Club; South Molton Town Band; Everything Ellie; Saunders Good Samaritan Trust; Little Willows Wish; Skate Molton; South Molton Memory Café; South Molton Army Cadet Force; Alzheimers Society; Little Willows; Macular Society Support Group; Barum Boxing; Rotary e-Club SW; Taw Vale Beagles and Witheridge Fire Station.
South Molton Vintage Rally will be held on May 30th and 31st 2026.

Your jobs to do in November
1. Plant tulip bulbs. It is best not plant them any earlier than this, as warm soil and damp conditions can increase the chances of fungal disease and rot.
2. Pot up some flowering bulbs for indoor colour and scent during the winter. Store the pots in a cool, dark place, until new growth emerges and then move to a bright window. Hyacinths, amaryllis, and narcissi are easy to grow.
3. Protect tender plants from frost, wrap with fleece, or move pots into a greenhouse or polytunnel.
4. Prune roses to prevent wind rock, cut them back by half. They will need to be pruned again early in the year.
5. Keep putting out food for hedgehogs, they won’t hibernate until it’s really cold.
During November we gradually move towards our least favourite job of the whole year, making holly wreaths! Details of how to order can be found on our Facebook page an on our website.
In fact, we dislike the job so much that after 30+ years, this is the last year we will be making them, so get them while you can!!
Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - harvest celebrations
by Roger Hill
We were very humbled but proud to receive this year’s Gold Award (pictured right) for our Classic Cuvée at the Devon Food and Drink awards ceremony in Exeter on October 6th. It is recognition not just for producers of the best that Devon has to offer, but also for restaurants, pubs and accommodation providers that support us.
With the harvest over we give thanks by way of both local harvest festivals and the county one held at Exeter Cathedral. This is a magical setting to celebrate food production at its finest. Whilst we are privileged to be involved in this great industry, it is important to educate the younger generation. That is where events in October such as Farmwise are so useful.
Held at the Westpoint arena where more than 1,600 primary school children are invited to see for themselves where our food and drink comes from and how it is made. The Key Stage 2 children get the chance to engage in a multitude of sensory activities and practical demonstrations offered by a mix of producers and farmers.
My grandchildren are getting quite excited as I predict a cold, snowy winter because of the abundance of nuts and berries in the hedgerows. Watch this space!
‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com and quoitatcrossvineyard.com)
Agrifest South West welcomes a new addition this year - the South West Food Village - which will bring a fresh flavour to the region’s premier one-day celebration of prime livestock. Held at Westpoint, Exeter on November 5th.
Lottery cash restores historic roof
South Molton Town Council is receiving a £234,000 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund towards the restoration of South Molton Pannier Market’s important glass roof.
The Victorian Patent Glass roof lights extend along the 77 metre length of the building, which was constructed in 1863. It is one of the largest glazed market hall roofs in the country.
Stuart McLeod, from the National Lottery Heritage Fund said, “This project not only protects a unique piece of the town’s heritage, but brings the community together to celebrate its history and ensure the market continues to thrive for generations to come.”
The work will be managed by David Wilson Associates from Barnstaple, and the council is seeking experienced contractors and glazers.
South Molton Pannier Market will remain open during the work, due to start next spring

South Molton Community Garden news
by Rebecca Blackman
We’ve been busy getting the garden ready for winter. It’ll soon be time to cover the communal plots, but we’re clearing the beds and tidying up as much as possible beforehand.
The runner beans are all finished now, we’re still sharing our potato crop and the leeks are looking good this year. We’ve harvested the pumpkins and squashes (right) ready for our soup day, which is always a lovely gathering!
The Willy-Nilly garden is suddenly looking more organised, after one of our gardeners had a genius idea to strim the paths! We’ve decided to keep mown paths through the Willy-Nilly garden instead of the wood chip paths. Hopefully it’ll save us time and we can focus on looking after the flower beds instead of battling to keep the paths clear.
If you’d like to join us, please visit the garden on a Thursday afternoon, around 2-3pm weather permitting. Alternatively, please see our website for more information: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or on Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden

South Molton assault charge
A 28-year-old man has been charged with assault following an incident at a South Molton pub. Jordan Foster, of Hugh Squier Avenue, South Molton, is charged with wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and common assault.
It follows an incident at The Coaching Inn in Queen Street just after 9pm on Saturday, October 11th. A man in his 30s needed extensive hospital treatment after sustaining serious injuries. Police are appealing for witnesses and camera/phone footage.
Foster appeared before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on October 13th and was remanded in custody until his next appearance on November 13th at Exeter Crown Court.
Police station petition
A petition has been launched calling for South Molton Police Station to be opened to the public again. The Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall Alison Hernandez has already re-opened 17 police station ‘front desks’ across the region. If you would like to support the campaign, the petition is in the reception in the Amory Centre in South Molton.
New school library is community effort
Parents, pupils and staff have pulled together to create a stunning new forestthemed library at South Molton Community Primary School.
They didn’t have a proper library before, now the room has been transformed into a welcoming space reflecting the school’s eco values (right). A tree mural painted by parent Tabi Lang covers one wall.
The refurb, led by the school PTA and its chair Kirsty Penno with teacher and literacy lead Emily Gladman, was officially opened on October 10th. “The old space was tired and cold. It wasn’t inspiring like a library should be. We wanted to create somewhere that felt inviting and cosy, but that was also inspiring and created a love for reading,” said Kirsty. It came about with support from parents, pupils and staff - many of whom gave up time in the school holidays. Alongside donations from the Masonic Lodge, Jewsons and other suppliers, the PTA team raised £1,000 for books and £5,000 for furniture.

Concern at Post Office hours cut
People in Bishops Nympton have expressed concern after their village Post Office hours were cut to just 3 hours a week from 24. It now has just three months running at one morning a week to prove the service is still needed.
Library consultation launching
Devon County Council is starting a 12 week consultation on the future of library services in November. With pressure on funding, Libraries Unlimited, the charity running 50 Devon libraries, is urging everyone to get involved.
Charity’s big win
The Benita Project won the ‘best community group’ category at the 2025 BBC Make A Difference Awards. Founded by Ioni Drake and Mandy Harding, the group aims to provide ‘warmth, companionship and nourishment to anyone, regardless of their background or financial situation’.
10 year Biosphere strategy
The North Devon UNESCO Biosphere is holding a public consultation on its ‘bold new strategy’ for 2025 - 2035. Residents, organisations and visitors are being asked to help shape the future of one of the UK’s most treasured natural landscapes.
