Spanish Property - Now is REALLY the time to buy... by Mark Mountney

The Spanish property market, like others, especially around And timing is important! But not always the Mediterranean, is prone to ‘boom and bust’ due to it’s critical, especially when you are buying long reliance on overseas demand for holiday homes and investment speculation. This ‘bust’ that we have now is not term, Sure, if you were buying today to sell in a couple of the first and neither will it be the last. In the last 30 years years, the possibility of continuing low values for a number of Spain has witnessed 5 real recessions that has had a years would be a worry. But most purchasers do not buy for negative impact on property values each time albeit to the short term; that is the domain of property speculators and they won’t return to Spain for a while methinks. differing degrees. But that does not make it always a bad risk; the surprise is that property appreciation has given rise to an annualised growth of circa 5% in that same period so it is really down to ‘when’ you buy rather than ‘whether’ you buy! The market always comes back; it’s just a question of how quickly and strongly.

But long term, with property prices so low and with the amount of discounting and repossessions available, it is difficult to see why now is not the time to commit. Firstly, you have the potential of buying a property today some 30-40% less than it was a year or two ago. Secondly, mortgage rates in the Eurozone are low, circa 3% only, and that trend is not going to change for a number of years. No property should really be bought for ‘cash’ irrespective of personal circumstances as a mortgage offers significant proportion against certain risks and tax exposures that we see in Spain that, as an example, do not apply in the UK. And the concern of the Euro/Sterling exchange rate is partially overcome by borrowing in Euros.

And the demand for Spanish property will not diminish; on the contrary recent research has shown that in the UK, as an example, an increasing number of folk are determined to move to the sun and Spain remains the No. 1 attraction. Now it is a question as to when the confidence in the global economy and property markets return to prompt the continuing stream of Ex Pats, especially from the UK, Buyers today and over the next 12 months will probably be moving to better climes. viewed as the brave ones, but it is they who will show the greatest returns in the years to come.

The Red Eye Flight By Lenox Napier Sat in the car at the airport, doing a swing past the guards every so and along so as not to get stuck in the park and queue to pay and lug the suitcases across and up the steps. It’s worse inside with huge hangers full of marble and Germans. I park on the flowerbed for a piece. They arrive. The girl looks nice. We leave with the windows down and papers blowing around and out. No air-con in this old car.

trampled to death noted the Welshman sadly as I solicitously bought him another drink. It is told that, after the shoot, they asked Sam Spiegel what was to be done with the camels and horses. He answered laconically: ‘Can ‘em!’ A machine gunner shot the whole herd. Some reward for being in an Oscar film.

My friend notices that the bar has a sign to say that This Establishment has Complaining Sheets. You ever been there?’ wasn’t him anyway. Right, come on, they’re a lot cheaper than on the coast than here It’s about an hour’s driving to get to my place. I reckon it’s going and the company is nicer. to take us a little longer. Sandwiched between a tour-bus and a cement truck, we pull off the road at the first opportunity. A few houses stand around, looking unconcerned. The car cools down over another flowerbed, this one rather tatty, as we enter a building through an enormous barn-door. We’ll have a couple of beers and tapas. I’m all knowing as the host; role-playing as a tour-guide with witty answers to all the queries. ‘…That’s right, donkeys!’ Some blond fellow watches us from the far end of the bar. He probably works down at the cowboy town film-set. A young girl with a bruised face works the beers and the customers. The blond looks like he wants to start something. The residents here have an easy way to measure themselves against each other: how long you bin living here? You have to watch their eyes when you face up for this one. It’s a kind of pissing contest where there can only be one winner. I try and avoid this, as the loser can get sore. My friends are looking at the sad range of entrails lying under the glass counter. ‘Sí, una ronda de cañas. ¡vaya!’ The little barmaid brings the specie and goes ‘t’ree beer?’ and I’m deflating like a spare tyre on a Renault. Kinda place is this anyway? ‘Thank you dear child. And where are you from?’ Rumania. Well I’ll be buggered. All these years living here, trying to blend in with the locals and to pick up a few words, and do you know, I can’t even say: I am a secret policeman, where is your sister? A Rumanian friend had been telling me about his work permit and the paperwork he’d given in. He’d prepared and written up the document himself on a sheet from a Bucharest cigarette company with fancy headed-paper and had covered it with stamps made with ceiling wax and the metal top from a Chivas Regal bottle. We need people like this in Spain. We’re into some of those beers in dark glass and feeling the kick. The blond fellow has joined us. It’s too hot to take an attitude. From the terrace you can see a piece of a wide, sandy riverbed. It was here that they shot the film Lawrence of Arabia in 1966. Well, a small piece of it. A Welshman, cashiered from the Horseguards, once told me the story of how the producer, Sam Spiegel, had obtained a thousand horses and camels to attack the papier mâché town of Aquaba on the Carboneras coast. The Welshman led the charge dressed in suitable togs but for some reason, with no saddle. One mistake and I would have been BACK

Almerimar throughout the year – winter and spring By: John Woodhead, www.almerimartoday.com This is the second of two articles about how our town of Almerimar in the province of Almería changes throughout the year. This article covers winter and spring. The article covering summer and autumn was published in Issue 11 of the magazine (June 09). Winter in Almerimar Winter is a time when Almerimar is much less busy. It is easier to find parking spaces and the queues in supermarkets are much smaller than the summer.

So come October/November we get to meet up with old friends we have not seen for some time. Lots of them take part in the Friday golf competitions we organise every Friday throughout the year. In the summer we only have small numbers taking part but we average around 40-50 people on Fridays in the winter. Mostly we play the competition and then go back to a local bar for drinks and prize giving (everyone wins a bottle and the last place team wins some chocolates). However, every 4-6 weeks we organise a special competition where we all go out to dinner afterwards. See the As the province of Almería is one of the driest in Europe we golf.almerimartoday.com site for more information about the do not have a lot of rainfall over the winter. Climate statistics competitions that we organise in collaboration with Alan and show on average 6 days of rain a month in the worst months. Sharon from Alcor Properties. However, in the winter of 2004/2005 when we first arrived in Almerimar we had snow for the first time in over 40 years. There are not as many events taking place in the winter but there is enough going on to entertain people that want to go Luckily it has not appeared again since then. out for an evening. However, if can get windy from time to time. promotes events in the town of El Ejido about 15 minutes This is great for the windsurfers but not so good for the drive away (e.g. Jazz and Modern Music Festival in golfers. We have been told that it tends to be windy for 3 November, ballets, theatre etc.). days in a row and then the calm weather returns.

Spring in Almerimar

A number of the bars and restaurants take a 1 month vacation at different times during the winter. Nevertheless When spring arrives in Almerimar the winter golfer all go there are still plenty of places to go to eat and drink around back to their home countries. The exodus starts in late the marina in Almerimar. Also, some places do excellent March and the last ones tend to leave in May. Continued winter deals (e.g. 10 euros for a 3 course dinner including a drink at El Arroz every Thursday from 8-9pm in the winter and spring). Winter is a time for us to meet up with lots of golfing friends. People with property in Almerimar tend to visit the town from time to time throughout the year. However, a lot of the golfers from Northern Europe spend a lot of time in Almerimar over the winter.

Spring is probably my favourite season in Almerimar. You can virtually guarantee that the weather will be good. So good that friends that come over visit us in April have been known to go nude sunbathing on the nudist beast that is only a short drive from Almerimar. Also, the golf course is pretty quiet so you can get a game of golf just about any time you fancy.

In spring there is still snow showing on the Sierra Nevada mountain range that you can see from Almerimar. It is said that if you start early enough in the day you can drive to the Sierra Nevada, ski in the morning, then drive back to Almerimar to play golf in the afternoon. Easter is always a hectic time in Almerimar. Lots of visitors come here during the Easter holidays. There are lots of masses and parades at churches in the various towns in the area.

HOW PAWS HELPS ………......…Austin’s Story Would you do this to your would give him the long term fostercare that he so “Grandfather”? deserves? The Vet has no idea of Austin’s age except that he is very old. An Elderly Boxer thrown out like rubbish. He is a very gentle guy. Abandoned left tied to a fence, very thin and VERY VERY hungry, old sores on his elbows and knees where he has obviously lain in concrete all his life; probably chained as he is enjoying the freedom of the PAWS car-park!! Just no room for him in the kennels – every kennel is full to capacity at the moment. Austin is also blind in one eye. He will probably be a permanent feature at the PAWS shelter as finding a home for Austin will not be easy; however if PAWS can give him a year or two of quality life then that’s the way its going to be. Maybe we can find people who would sponsor “Austin’s” remaining years? Or maybe there is someone out there who

Tradition has it that they arrive on January 6th, the date the Wise Men gave gifts to Jesus. Shoes are filled with straw or barley for the tired camels that must carry their riders through the busy night. By morning the camel food is gone and in place of the straw or barley are presents. Shoes also may be placed on balconies on the night of the 6th January in the hope that the Wise Men will fill them with gifts. Most homes have a manger, like cathedrals and churches. These are complete with carved figures. During the weeks before Christmas, families gather around their manger to sing, whilst children play tambourines and dance.

Christmas is a deeply religious holiday in Spain. The country's patron saint is the Virgin Mary and the Christmas season officially begins December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. It is celebrated each year in front of the great Gothic cathedral in Seville with a ceremony called los Seises or the "dance of six." Oddly, the elaborate ritual dance is now performed by not six but ten elaborately costumed boys. It is a series of precise movements and gestures and is said to be quite moving and beautiful.

Dames in Spain The Dames in Spain enjoyed a demonstration by Judith Davies of how to make Christmas Decorations at very little cost at their monthly meeting on Monday 16 November. Many ideas and tips where given by

Goodman. This concert was a spectacular success and played to packed houses for each performance. The Rose Singers were born!! Janet became Musical Director, Tina the Treasurer, and Lyn the Secretary cum Librarian. From 6 members the group has grown over the last 7 years and now number 13 and as people leave they are replaced by others.

Judith and the ladies were certainly appreciative of her originality and creative ideas.

A Biography of the Rose Singers In the Autumn of 2002, Janet Rose, Tina van der Klooster, and Lyn Ferris, three friends all with musical backgrounds and a lot of experience, met together to discuss the possibility of forming a small singing group in the Mojacar area, thus filling a gap in the classical music scene of the region. So together with Nicky Black and Odile Mailhac they In 2005 the Choir were joined by Pam Peters as their planned a concert and commenced rehearsals. resident accompanist. Pam is an extremely versatile pianist and much sort after in musical circles. The singers Ruth Wood joined the group in January 2003 and in March of that year they made their ‘debut’ in the Anglican Chaplaincy in are indeed very fortunate to have her as a valued member Continued Mojacar, being accompanied by well-known musician Peter of the group.

When Janet Rose went back to live in the U.K. the singers were left without a musical director. Luckily in September 2006 Tina and Lyn met Alison Jackson, a retired professional musician and piano teacher, who agreed to become Musical Director and Conductor. Alison brought with her a wealth of musical experience, and is very able to ‘manage’ the ladies.

Tina “retired” from singing with the Choir in 2008, but she does still take her place on the stage and ‘stands in’ if anyone is ill or leaves. She remains the Treasurer and is now the Assistant Musical Director. The group are international with singers from Holland and Germany as well as Britain, and have an extensive repertoire performing all types of music, from secular, sacred, fun songs, folk songs, and not forgetting song from the shows. In fact each concert is carefully co-ordinated to reflect a good balance of music in order to appeal to all sections of the public. Whilst concentrating on two main concerts each year the choir is available to perform at private functions also. For enquiries please contact Lyn on 950 460 511 / 667 276 614.

"Rethink Your Business And Start Engaging" By Steve Homer Steve Homer is a business consultant with in excess offering isn’t right, then people won’t come back, but that’s of 36 years involvement in corporate business. In the meantime, when time permits, Steve is also a professional photographer and website developer. The use of the fast growing social media marketing through a social media network such as Twitter allows you to, over time • build a ‘following’ of locally based customers • build a ‘following’ of new prospects (even in say the UK who will be visiting your resort shortly) • ‘engage’ with your very own community • reduce your marketing costs • get your message out to the community 20 times per day, if you wish, all for no extra cost • drive new visitors to your website • advertise your offerings, specials, etc • increase your turnover

If you are many of the British business owners based in Spain you’ll probably be going through a stage of reevaluating where exactly your income is going to come from to tide you through the winter months. With the continued economic depression in the UK and Spain and the reduced tourist traffic, many businesses rely on the expats who have moved to Spain for a better life. The continuous fluctuations in the £ v € and the need for cautious spending even the expats aren’t spending as much as they used to, and of course this makes predicting your income very difficult Does this Twitter and Facebook lark work? Answer: only if you put the time and effort into it! Participate, participate, indeed. and participate!

There is therefore a need for a drastic re-valuation of not only your business, but specifically how you market your Whilst it isn’t a pre-requisite, having your own ‘decent’ business. There is no overnight answer to this except the website is the start. They don’t have to be expensive, but it harder your work on it and the more you engage with your tells your audience, “I care enough about my business that I prospects and existing customers then the greater the wish to invest in promoting it!” Why would any business not rewards. This isn’t about sitting back and placing an advert wish to promote their offering to the world? I find it incredible in the local periodical to be seen by only those that bother to that this happens. glance through it week on week or month on month. This is about ‘true’ and ‘active engagement’ with your audience and Having a website however is only the start. It’s no good with your prospective audience. To what do I refer? Social having a website if no-one can find it and no-one knows it exists! Promote, promote and promote. Search Engine media marketing. Optimisation (SEO) is complex but with some study or a Oh, you’ll have heard all the hype about Facebook and helping hand then you can soon make in-roads to spreading Twitter and similar networks and the majority of you will say the word. Interestingly, over 80% of Spanish based businesses do not have websites, and those that do, over 70% score badly on search engine optimisation gradings! Companies, even in Mojacar, are having great success in utilising social media with following of between 500+ to 1500+ people. How many would you need in your restaurant or bar to improve your takings? Social media networks are also an excuse for getting a ‘gathering’ of people together and having a party and there is plenty of scope for that. Outside of Mojacar, businesses are increasing their restaurant business by 30%, increasing traffic to their website by 3,000% and establishing a loyal following of people who buy from them. Sure, it takes time and it would be more effective if the word was spread throughout your town or resort and ore people were encouraged to participate but even you, as a lone business, can make an impact on your business by ‘engaging’ with your prospects, turning them into loyal customers. I’ll leave you with two final examples. A guest house and restaurant one hour from Mojacar, 20kms from the nearest tiny hamlet, and a further 3 kms down a dirt track, is flourishing to the extent that even I (and I’ve taken 50 to 60 guests there and know the owners well!) have to book at least a week if not 2 weeks in advance. Their success? Great product and they engage with their customers. The second of my examples; a tiny village bar/restaurant in the hills just outside Mojacar. The owners request the email address of all visitors to the establishment and get their agreement to go on their email newsletter listing. Cost related to these two examples? Virtually nothing except time investment, but it works! “What have you done today to engage with our prospective customer base?”

Some Useful Gardening Products For Next Year BY CLODAGH AND DICK HANDSCOMBE other ways of growing vegetables on a small scale described in Part Two of ‘ Your Garden in Spain’

*Clodagh and Dick Handscombe’s books are available in the Mojacar area from Total Entertainment in Albox and Choice Entertainments in Herculavira and also by mail order by telephoning the publishers on 952.48-5838 or clicking ‘Our Books’ on www.gardeninginspain.com’. We are always on the look out for interesting new gardening products that could be of practical use to ourselves and yourselves. For that reason we visited this years edition of Iberflora Spain’s major gardening professional trade show. It’s the show case for revamped and new gardening products from both Spanish and International companies. There is also an extensive plants section.

3. Neudorff Eco garden products. We mentioned Neudorff’s ecological snail killer in an earlier article. That was on their stand but most importantly so were the other products that are now being sold into retail outlets. The products that appealed to us were as follows. • Pasta de Poda – an ecological sealant for the bare cuts when you prune large branches and trunks of trees and large shrubs to prevent fungal spores from entering the wounds and causing rot to set in. The idea of the product is not new but it is now in a handy tube with a hard plastic brush action applicator on the end so you do not need to use and throw a way a paint brush each time you do some pruning. • Fertilizante Coniferas – an ecological fertilizer to strengthen and darken the green of your aging conifer hedge. We have already applied some as there is much new growth after the autumn rains. • Repellent Spray de Perros y Gatos – a combined spray for keeping pet and feral cats and dogs of your flower beds and pots and for spraying the gate posts to deter passing dogs and inhibit the entry of cats. Unfortunately it requires a weekly treatment. • Nuevo Fertilizante Huerta y Jardín – an eco fertilizer available in 2.5 kilo plastic sacks. Very handy for fertilizing vegetables growing in containers as well as enriching potting composts when planting flowering plants in containers and a half yearly topping up. • Fertilizante Tomates – at last in Spain a genuine ecological tomato fertilizer.

This years show was rather smaller than in earlier years due to the economic conditions. As a result there was less to see but it was easier to walk round and find exhibitors with time to talk. The products we found most interesting are described in this article. Some can already be found in the more forward thinking garden centres and horticultural shops If one looks at the German catalogue of Neudorff they have and for others you will need to wait until next spring. plenty of other new products for launch in the Spanish market in the coming years – they set up as the 1. Water Butts If you don’t yet have a water butt for collecting rain water from manufacturer of ecological agricultural products in 1854. A roof have a look at the products of Graf on www.grafiberica.com. We have never seen such a collection. 4. Long spout fine spray watering can – We have been Their collection includes plastic butts disguised as Roman looking for this for a long time in Spain and we found one at columns, wine fermenting sizes earthenware jars, stone walls Continued and stone planters with plants growing on top. They are not yet available in many garden centre but we were told that you We have a selection of apartments and villas to rent in can order direct via info@grafiberica.com or 972-913767. 2. Genuine Eco Grow Bags Remember those grow bags we loved to use in England for growing a few tomato plants. Well Flora Guard are launching them in Spain and they should start to be seen in garden centres by the end of the year. Look out for their red bags specially prepared for fruit vegetables such as tomatoes peppers and aubergines and the green bags developed for the growing of leaf vegetables such as lettuces Swiss chard (acelga) and herbs. Grow bags fit in very well with the many

Iberflora manufactured by Ebert and distributed by Decora Life Garden Products. We noted that Egbert also make a range of window boxes with built in self watering water reservoirs. 5. Potting composts – as usual many companies offered new improved mixes for potting composts. The ones you will probably find are Flora Guard, Biot and Compo. 6. Earth retaining organic mattings – if you have an earth bank that is difficult to stabilise or wish to stop the erosion of the banks of a natural pond it would be worth investigating the range of natural fibre matting manufactured by Bon Terra Iberica www.bonterraiberica.com. 7. Creatively pruned olive trees – several stands had creatively pruned olive trees for architectural purposes rather than high yields of fruit. Shapes included thin columns, low spreading and Japanese bonsai effects with wide spreading branches and occasional platforms of tightly trimmed leaves. We plan to have a go with one of our olive trees. Bougainvilleas can also be pruned in the same ways. 8. Fiskars ergonomic pruners – again Fiskars demonstrated their useful range of Secateurs long pruners and saws. Just the thing for you post Christmas winter cut back as well as your topiary efforts with an olive tree.

'Richard Rambeau' for one; Well, he reports in The Reader that "Ghosts used to be fairly regular inhabitants of Mojácar, perhaps as part of the town’s magical heritage (‘rincón de embrujo’ the corner of enchantment, ‘el aquelarre’ - the witches’ coven, and the many ‘curanderos’ or faith-healers of olden times, all scampering around waving their Indalos at each other)." The American poet Denise Duhamel in one of her books mentions Mojácar as the "city of witches" where, in the quiet dead of night, there might be a witch's ceremony somewhere." Sadly, because she was a tourist, she was never invited. However, her guidebook 'confirmed' that there were still such gatherings on "sheltered corners of mountainsides." (Which bar is that then??) The author of the website Mojacar.co.uk says that "If you read books about the village they talk about its link to witchcraft in the 15th century." I'm still following up on that one. My own website, Indaloart.com reports the oftmentioned phrase that Mojácar is a "village of witches" because of its supposed flirtation with faith-healing, spells, and magic brews over many years. Please, if anyone has any more information on this, let me know. But one thing is undisputed: Mojácar loves it's Indalo - the little Rainbow Warrior type symbol seen on countless cars, trucks and houses, and a celebrated good luck talisman . . possibly related to all those spells and witches, but equally likely to be related to ancient beliefs, God and a Saint:

representing various aspects of daily spiritual life. One of these, is Indalo-shaped and known as Rainbow Man. In Rameses II's temple at Abydos in Egypt you will find the Indalo-shaped figures of the courting priestesses of Seti. In South/Central America, the Mayan, Aztec, Tarascan and Inca races had gods and goddesses of the Rainbow. The symbol also appears in cultures in Africa, Australia and Asia. In Spain, the Indalo Rainbow Warrior is known as the Guerrero de Arco Iris . . the Warrior of the Rainbow.

I have spent much time studying this little lucky symbol / amulet and, as a Portrait Artist, decided to paint different forms of the Indalo in my work. This can be seen on my Indalo Art website. (The Indalo is reputed to be at its luckiest when given as a gift . . . Did I mention it's nearly Christmas?!)

The Indalo shape (whether it be classical like Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, or spiritual as in the Rainbow Man or Rainbow Warrior of the ancient North American Indians, is undoubtedly a popular symbol worldwide. In Spain, the area of the world where it is most seen, it dates Opposite California Fitness back to Neolithic times: The symbol found in the caves at Vélez Blanco Friendly Family Bar has been dated around 4,500 BC and the cave was declared a National Historical Monument in 1924; it is now a site of UNESCO World Catering for Spanish and English Heritage. But it is unclear whether the origin of the word itself (Indalo) relates to 'Indal Eccius' (meaning 'Messenger of God' in ancient Iberian) Bar Snacks - Live Football or to a Saint, San Indalecio, sent by Rome to evangalise the Iberian Pop & Rock & Roll Classes, Mon & Fri, 7.30 - 10.30pm peninsular in the first century AD, who was subsequently martyred just outside Almería. MICKEY MOUSE COINCIDENCES BEGUILE HOLLYWOOD’S UNRESOLVED ENIGMA! Ric Polansky © If you live in Mojacar or the area surrounding it, sooner or later you’re going to hear the rumor about America’s father of fantasy, Walt Disney, sired, if not, born here in Mojacar. Depending on who tells you the tale always sets your preconceived pattern of thought on whether it’s true or not. Hollywood too suffers a similar problem in that the rags to riches story cannot be proven in favor of the Disney corporation who claim the “pure American success story” now graduated to legend and myth. Countless newspaper articles have been penned and documentaries done lately… For true researchers, sooner or later they drift to Mojacar and scout about for any known authority or person of repute who might be able to back up or lend the slightest bit of credence to one side or the other. Such a find, the truth of Disney’s birth, would be the major debunking of legendary proportions. More exciting than discovering the tomb of Ghengis Khan or Alexander the Great, well, almost. Some, like myself, listened to the almost forgotten former mayor D. Jacinto recount his tale of how dark suited FBI agents arrived in a car (long before the road existed to the village). They supposedly came here in the early 50’s seeking records from the town hall about the lad who was rumored to have been fathered by a village dandy. Where ever historians search their paths sooner or later lead them to one Tito del Amo who has troubled himself over the years to solving the riddle. “My search is a collection of coincidences that led me, well, forced me, to look into the matter more than most. You see, I grew up across the street from Disney in Beverly Hills and even have photograph’s of playing on the train he was gifted that ran the circumference of his property”.

“Many years later when my father was honored at a ceremonial opening of Disneyland I was present and was greeted by Disney himself. So I knew Walt Disney, a bit of his demeanor, what he looked like and was. It is sad that so many books have been written about him calling him the “Dark Prince of Hollywood” or trying to paint a deranged or derogatory image of him as a bad or evil character. Then when I came to Mojacar and heard the stories and I just had to look into it myself so I started doing research”. Tito and friends are coming out in January with a CD documentary about their quest in solving the puzzle. They spent more than 114 hours filming and cut it down to a 90 minute slick and informative program. It has already been nominated for many special awards. Tito came to Mojacar back in 1964. His brother had preceded him and a few of his special friends. They raved about it upon their return to Madrid and Tito just had to come. Tito is the soft spoken impresario of the beach bar complex near the Hotel Indalo; pied piper to the rich and famous throughout Spain, all round good guy and guru to the silicon bronzed beauties from L.A. to Madrid that brighten and spectacularize our beaches.

“You see Ric, this quest is difficult both ways. Disney corporation can only come up with a baptismal certificate, no birth certificate and we can’t either; nor can we find actual proof of Isabelle, the local town beauty even entering the states via Ellis Island or Chicago”. Continued BACK

And the following is the story that I wrote 10 years While the world chuckled few were analytical enough to ask ago………………… about the man that created it all. Walt Disney was no normal person: he drank scotch heavily, smoked 70 specially rolled black cigarettes daily (died youngish at 65), washed his WALT DISNEY WAS BORN IN MOJACAR, hands thirty times an hour and spent his eighteen working hours dreaming of unusual characters from a world within himself. Walt Disney was as American as “Mother, apple pie, green backs (dollar bills) and Mickey Mouse.” A man of such immense importance and universal acclaim could only have come from the golden shores; lived the golden dream. Disney fits the American myth: a commercial Superman exuberating “truth, justice and the American way.” Those were the ideals Disney espoused; along with imagination, optimism, and self-made success. Why just say his name: WALT DISNEY and childhood images of sugar plum fairies pop into your imagination. And when they do … soon arrive talking ducks, a flying elephant called Dumbo and little dwarfs singing “Hi ho Hi Ho”. Myriads of fantasy personages that composed the litany of all that was good, true, and simple … long before time forced us to grow up.

Disney´s whimsical industry of escapism rumours persisted, spurred on by intimate friends, that Disney had an unusual past. Some suggested that this man that correlated to the American dream had an un-American background; an adopted childhood. In the states only one public document asserts that he was born at 1249 Tripp Avenue in Chicago on December 5th, 1901. This much we know from his legitimate daughter Diana (the other heir, Sharon Mae, was adopted). Diana insisted in her biography of this certain fact. However, two other biographer’s Richard Sickley and Bob Thomas contradict her both contending that when they queried Disney if he was from Mojacar “he smiled a far off nostalgic grin and would only repeat “Quien sabe?” Who knows? No one has been able to come up with an authentic birth certificate either from the Windy City or here in Mojacar where all the records were destroyed during the civil war.

The general consensus in Guazamara state she lived there in a near-by farming community of small cortijos (farm houses) in a region known as EL Guirao (ring a bell?). It would have been an authentic “caper” if Walt Disney had been born in Guazamara. The area is famed for “alcaparas”, (capers). In fact 95% of the world’s capers come from there. The mother, Isabel Zamora then later moved to Murcia, then to Valencia, and it was there that she met the captain of a ship that transported minerals to California. They left together, Isabel becoming the maid in the house of her patron, a Disney that allowed the boy to use the name. Another researcher on Disney, Ken Polson who maintained a very good Disney write-up on the web has written to me suggesting that I “beg, borrow, buy, or steal a copy of "Walt Disney - Hollywood's Dark Prince". It goes into some detail concerning the darker side of Disney. It mentions that Walt suspected he was adopted, that his father (Elias) had an affair with a Spanish woman, and then adopted the resulting child (who was supposedly born in Spain). The book mentions that even the FBI investigated this theory in Spain. I don't know the facts or details of how much truth there is to it,” Polson states.

The more recognized public American version had him growing up in Kansas on a farm, attending art school, then moving to Chicago where he studied at McKinley High and later at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In 1917 with war spirit moving him he decided to enlist. The enigma then began. He could not find an authentic birth certificate. He became suspicious himself. His parents helped him forge The common street story in Mojacar is that Walt Disney´s one. real name was Jose Guirao, the son of a man by that name and a local beauty, one Isabel Zamora Asensio. Walt Disney, or better said, Jose Guirao was born in the village barrio of Espiritu Santo sometime in 1900. The father died young. The detectives found little in their search but “did announce themselves as working for Disney”.

Another popular version exists which I shall refer to as the GUAZAMARA tale in which the same woman became romantically enlaced with another Mojaquero, Pedro Gonzalez Carillio, married and father of many other children. For my part I like leaving this story just where it is. Confused but so many contradictory facts. Mojacar deserves to claim him just as much as anywhere else. Walt Disney belonged to the world. That unique status is confirmed by every generation of children that became enamoured with: Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Huwey, Dewey and Louie. His beloved characters still bring smiles, giggles and outright belly laughs to Japanese, Arabs, Koreans or Laplanders. II believe that Walt Disney came from Mojacar. Yes, born in the barrio of Espiritu Santo. Come over and I will show you the exact house. As all of us true life explorers say around the camp fire when such momentous yet confusing issues are discussed: “Well, If it ain´t true it aughta be.”

COOKING WITH SHARON

Chorizo Stuffed Dates

Spanish Christmas Cookies

I made this Spanish tapa in my international class at the Cordon Bleu. This is not only a great Spanish Christmas food recipe but they are easy to make, can be made well ahead of time, and are fast to cook so you can make a bunch of them and still have fun at your party.

Pestiños are flakey and delicate Spanish Christmas cookies from Andalucía, in southern Spain. They are very easy to make and the ingredients are probably already in your pantry – simply flour, anise seeds or flavouring, white wine and oil. Roll, cut and fry. Once fried, dip them in warm honey and enjoy!

Ingredients: 2 ounces of Spanish Chorizo sausage 12 pitted Medjool dates 6 slices of bacon 1 beaten egg 1 cup of breadcrumbs 1 cup of flour Toothpicks Vegetable oil for frying

Preparation: Peel the skin off of the chorizo sausage and slice the sausage in half. Slice the sausage halves into ¼ inch slices. Slice one side of the date lengthwise. Fit one slice of the chorizo sausage inside each date. Close the date the best you can around the sausage bit. Do this for each of the twelve dates. Cut each slice of bacon in half. Wrap the bacon around the date. Pin the bacon onto the date with a toothpick. Dust the dates with flour. Dip each date in the egg mixture and coat it with breadcrumbs. At this point, you can cover the dates with plastic wrap and store them overnight in your refrigerator. When you are ready to cook the dates, pour about 1 ½ inch of oil into a pan. Heat the oil over a medium flame until it reaches at least 350 degrees. If you do not have a deep fry thermometer, just wait until you can feel the heat coming off the oil by holding your hand over, not in, the oil. Drop one date in the oil. If it starts to fry right away, you know your oil is ready. Fry the dates three or four at a time. Let them drain on a rack that has been placed in a sheet pan. Eat while still warm

Prep Time: 0 hour, 45 mins,Cook Time: 0 hour, 15 mins

Ingredients: 3 1/2 oz (100 ml) olive oil rind of 1 lemon 4 tsp (15 gr) anise seeds (optional) 3 1/2 oz (100 ml) white wine 2 oz (60 ml) anise liqueur 2 cups (250 gr) unbleached enriched white flour 2 cups (500 ml) (approximately) canola oil for frying 2 cups (250 gr) honey 1 Tsp water

Preparation: Cut peel off lemon. In a 8 to 10-inch pan, fry lemon peel in olive oil until it turns brown. Remove pan from heat and add anise seeds. Stir and allow oil to cool. Remove and discard lemon peel. Measure and pour the white wine and anise liqueur into a large mixing bowl. Add the cooled oil with seeds and the flour. Mix thoroughly until the dough forms a ball. (Add a few teaspoons more flour if the dough is too wet and sticky.) Cover with a kitchen towel and let sit in a warm place for 30 minutes. Generously flour a cutting board. Place dough on board and roll out to the thickness of a coin (about 1/8-inch thick). Using a pizza cutter, cut into strips about 1-inch wide and 2inches long (2.5 cm by 5 cm). Pour oil into a 10-inch frying pan and heat. When oil is hot, fry pestinos in oil until golden and drain on a paper towel. Mix honey and water in a small sauce pan and heat on low. Using a fork, dip pestinos into honey a few at a time and place on serving platter.

This being a Roland Emmerich movie, the As always Keyes’s trademark warmth and wisdom are evident noble president finally opts to remain in Washington and go throughout. With her ability to blend comedy, high drama and down with his people. For one brief, terrifying moment one emotional depth Keyes gets better and better with every book. wonders just what will finish him off: the aircraft carrier or the tide of schmaltz. But then nobody ever looked to Emmerich for nuance or subtlety. 2012, like all good disaster movies, is big and brash and gloriously over-the-top. One watches this knowing full well how dumb and unbelievable it all is, only to find your fists clenched and your brow sweating as one gut-wrenching action set-piece follows another. This, presumably, means that we believe it in the moment and that, with 2012, Emmerich has yet another hit on his hands. If the prophecies are to be believed, however, he has just three years to spend the money it earns. Amazing effects are the films crowning glory, remember though this is only a film! BACK

‘Alcazaba apartments’ offer a unique combination of peaceful seclusion and outstanding sea-views. Its desirable location means that the apartments enjoy full sun on their terraces morning till night. A factor that, together with Mojacar’s unique all-year round sunny climate, makes it extremely attractive to those wishing to benefit from the winter sun. The complex is small in size and commands an elevated position, with only 31 apartments sharing its private pool, which makes for a more private environment within which to holiday, as opposed to a large complex with a number of apartments sharing one pool facility.

My memories of Christmas Past By Gail Bennett, Resident of Mojacar When I was younger school was always a busy time leading up to Christmas with lots of rehearsals and new songs for us to learn. At Infant school there would be an annual Christmas Fair in the school hall to raise money. We would have a Christmas Party when Santa would arrive with parcels for us all. There would be Christmas Lunch served in the canteen with Christmas music ringing out over the usual chatter. I can remember us being allowed to make hats to wear. At Junior School there would be a concert for the parents to attend and each class would put on a mini play of some kind. The last day of term at junior school we would be allowed to take a toy or game to play with in the classroom. The Sunday morning Church service before Christmas was always a Family Service when the Sunday School Children would attack the sacks with gusto and soon the lounge floor always put on a Nativity Play, Mary in the traditional Blue would be covered with discarded paper and opened toys as Dress that would come out every year and Joseph and the we hastily went on to the next gift. My sister always finished shepherds with their heads covered in tea towels. We would opening hers first while as I was that little bit older would always sing some Christmas carols to the delight of our take a little bit more time. proud parents, for some of whom, I might add, this was the only time of the year they would venture through the church The morning would be filled with the bustle of the Christmas door. lunch being prepared, new LP records being played on the stereo in the lounge, baths for us and the excitement of Sunday evening service that weekend was the only time my putting on our new Christmas outfits. The dining table would Family would go to an evening service as this would be our be carried into the lounge and Mum would place her own annual Carols by Candlelight. When I think back to the Christmases of my childhood I remember the joy of stretching out my toes and finding a stocking on my bed first thing on Christmas morning. Running into my parent’s room, diving onto their bed, armed with gifts for them and my younger sister. Dad would go down to light the oven to put in the sausage rolls to heat up for our breakfast. Christmas Day was always a family time for us. Then on date for the early church to say that Christ had been born Boxing Day we would all descend on our other Grandparents then but it the fact that we do celebrate his birth is what is house and have another “Christmas day” complete with more important. presents from our extended family. Nan loved us all to come and for many years all of us children were squeezed onto a I understand that not everybody is a believer of the blanket covered wooden plank balanced between two dining Christmas story or even Christian, however the winter chairs so that the whole family could sit at the table months for some people can be a very lonely and dark time, altogether. and this last year has bought upset and a lot of misery and worry to some, and I believe that any festival which teaches At 17 I started work, training to become a florist. That first us to be generous and kind should be welcomed and Christmas, I did not know what had hit me. The “Holly Man” enjoyed. arrived on the first Monday of December to sell large bunches of Holly to the shop. I was instructed to count the May I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy 2010. bunches into the shop just in case our “Travelling Trader”(who we only ever saw once as year and could never be contacted!) could not count them accurately. For the next few days I had to stand at my bench mossing wire wreath frames in readiness for the hundreds of holly wreaths the senior florists would put together. The wiring of the pieces of holly was a painful experience, but I might add after a few days my hands were numb and although very red and sore I did not seem to notice the sharp holly digging into my young hands as I continued to wire bunch after bunch. That first year I was allowed to assemble two holly wreaths myself which I took great pride in doing as they would be placed on my Nan’s grave. Over the years as a florist I could not possibly count the number of holly wreaths I have made. But I have certainly had some very sore hands. Now I have a family of my own, Christmas is still a very special time, maybe even more so. I love all the preparation, the decorating of the tree; although I seemed to have lost the job to my daughter in the last couple of years; Mince pie making, turkey buying, table decoration making. December is very busy in our home as my husband and son were both December babies so we have birthdays to celebrate before Christmas is upon us. This year I also have the job of remaking the Churches advent candle arrangement. Then there is a production of Grease to see, numerous musical end of term concerts and performances, and rehearsals for the Church annual Carols by Candlelight service where this year my daughter is to sing a solo, so I shall be a very proud Mum. Oh yes, I have also been invited to write a Christmas piece for a certain online Mojacar Magazine!!(But I have enjoyed doing that) Before Christianity, the pagan festival of Yuletide was celebrated from about 20th December to early January, when the sun is at its lowest point in the sky. The sacred colours of that festival were red and green,(colours now associated with Christmas) and the Yule log was ceremoniously brought to the hearth and kept burning throughout the festivities. The holly and the ivy, together with other greenery, were also brought inside to create decorations to keep evil spirits away. When Christianity was established, the church regularised the situation by decreeing 25th December as the date of Christ's birth which conveniently allowed the two celebrations to be melded together. I realise that December 25th was a "convenient” BACK

Min and Motors An Interesting Project... A lot has been happening over the last couple of months. A new job and a new house in a new city. New schools for the kids that have been received with happiness by the youngest who is always up for a challenge and by sheer misery leading to acceptance and then indifference by my eldest who hates any sort of change, isn’t 13 a wonderful age! Where the move was concerned I happily started ringing around various hire companies to rent a large truck to do the move in but the prices they charge these days seem to be through the roof. So I sat outside drinking my morning brew looking at my old Transit wondering how many 150 mile round trips it would take in it when a large black LDV Maxus van turned into my Cul six beds so they can take the whole family and the dog with you. de sac with my Dad sitting in the driver’s seat grinning like a mad Dad wants neither of course he wants a warm van he can man. After pulling up he informs me this is his latest project and potter around the country in with a small cooker a comfy bed and also a means to move us up north to our new life. plenty of light for reading the map to choose the next stop off point. Now when you think of a van you automatically conjure up images of tradesmen, loads of tools and equipment piled high in the back and cabs full of half eaten breakfast rolls and rubbish. Of course there is always a copy of the Sun newspaper as well. Well my old man has not decided to come out of retirement and start up in the building trade and thankfully he has not lost his marbles either by buying a bloody great big van as his daily run around oh no he has decided that after owning many types of campervan it is now time to build one of his own design from scratch. Now this is not a challenge for the faint hearted, the hassle with the insurance companies alone is a nightmare then you have to pass an inspection to officially get the conversion onto the V5 registration document. So the van he chose is an extra high top, long wheel base LDV Maxus. It has a 2.5 Litre common rail diesel engine with manual gearbox and the gearstick is dashboard mounted to create as much usable space as possible. Now I make him sound like an old man which is not true as he is only in his early fifties and campervans are not only for those who are looking for ways to pass the last of their time in this mortal coil. They are as popular with the young and trendy as well as families for a fun cheap break. Now the break only becomes cheap once you have paid out a small fortune on buying a camper and by building your own you can save thousands on a purpose built van. So as Dad accumulates the many parts he needs to commence this ambitious project we will keep calling back in to see him to Isn’t it incredible how diverse vans can be? It’s amazing how check on his progress, how much hair he loses and to keep a many different types and variations there are. So why choose tab on how much money he spends. an LDV Maxus? This wasn’t a case of pick any van and get on with cutting the windows out of it and sticking a bed in. Oh no I The next time you see a van go by don’t just think of parcel am assured that it has taken weeks of careful consideration deliveries and builders, think of what it could be, where you could between makes, lengths, heights and width let alone engine be travelling and what sights you could see in it. sizes, reliability and what toys they come with. It’s a very individual choice as to what you want from your conversion. Some people like a large bathroom whilst others want at least BACK

It’s a chilling tale about an Englishman who finds refuge in a remote village lost in the sierras. All seems tranquil enough and he falls for a delightful local girl. But soon he discovers that under the placid surface lurk sinister secrets. He has blundered into an emotional minefield — with nasty surprises at every corner. David himself lives in a Spanish village, but — maybe for self-protection? — he denies it has anything to do with the one in his book. “The characters are all figments of the imagination and the village of Benamargo does not exist,” he insists. He does admit that the idea originated with the strange experience of some friends who bought a remote farmhouse only to find themselves embroiled in violent family feuds. BACK
