Welcome

Well having just returned from 2 weeks in a very warm Mojácar it is clear that the holiday season is now in swing, however there is a distinct lack of people in the bars and restaurants compared to recent years. One restaurant owner told us that trade is down 20% against the same period last year. The Euro against the pound has made a considerable difference which is quite noticeable when you spend out for a meal for two.

Too Many Magazines and Papers? It’s odd when you think about it the amount of newspapers and magazines that are available along the seafront. We always get ours from Thomas’s Supermarket. There seems to be endless supplies supplies, of the Post, The new Reader, The Advertiser, The Messenger and a whole host of rising start. Mojácar Magazine started over 2 years ago and began as a bit of a hobby really. I have been coming to Mojácar for 27 years now and during that time I have always been involved in the regional press. I used to and still do chuckle to myself when I look through some of the titles, as they have terrible layouts and the design is somewhat lacking. Fonts are too large where they have to fill space and captions are often over laid by photos. It seems that this will never end and I resign myself to look at ‘shoddy’ workmanship that can only give regional newspapers a bad name. I also see ideas that Mojácar Magazine came up with being taken and copied, not word for word but things like ‘Cooking with Sharon’ translates in one of the items to ‘Cooking with Shirley’. Business Profiles seem to be cropping up a bit as well and some general articles are being copied. Regional newspapers and pick ups I believe have a longer prospect than in the UK, a large proportion are holidaymaker's and don’t have their computer to hand, so a pickup is a good option, however saying that the industry is in turmoil as the Internet takes over. Mojácar Magazine now being in it’s 12th edition has led the way becoming digital and not destroying our rainforests. Other papers like the Almeria Messenger have now caught on a realize this is the way to go. If you have not got a digital edition now it could already be too late for you.

Spanish property prices set to fall another 20pc says leading bank Spanish property crash is far from over, argues BBVA, Spain's second biggest bank. According to BBVA's latest report on the Spanish property sector, house prices will fall 10% this year, and 12% next year, leading to overall price falls from peak to trough of 30% by 2012, the year in which the bank expects the market to start its recovery. According to the eggheads at BBVA who wrote the report, "the adjustment in prices has taken place quicker than expected." The same cannot be said for the country's glut of new homes, which the bank estimates at 1.2 million properties, and expects to reach 1.5 million by the start of next year. BBVA's estimates are significantly higher than the governments; a new report from the Ministry of Housing estimates there are just 1 million new homes in Spain in search of a buyer.

The value of your home minus any outstanding mortgage can be described as your 'equity'. Equity release is the process whereby this is turned into cash, which you can then spend on whatever you like. Because the equity is yours in the first place, there is no tax to pay on the funds you receive, and there are no regular repayments to make. With a lifetime mortgage which is the most popular form of equity release, you continue to own 100% of your home throughout.

If you are a homeowner, aged 55 or over, you could be eligible to take advantage of releasing equity from your property. Because the money that is obtained is yours in the first place - you're simply 'releasing' it - there is no tax to pay and the funds are yours to spend on absolutely anything you choose. Sipping with the Pope By Lenox Napier One of my favourite drinks in Spain is an iced milky drink called horchata. It tastes sweetly of nut. The drink is originally from Valencia and it is made from sugar, water, cinnamon and tiger nuts. Since no one knows what a tiger nut is, we might as well stick with the Spanish name, chufa. The plant (I discover) is a kind of tuber, very good for you and all that, and almost impossible to get rid of if it is growing in your garden. On the bright side, you can always make more horchata since the drink only lasts a few days before spoiling.

small ‘c’ conservatives. It has always been told that horchata was invented by the Valencians during the time of the Moorish occupation of Spain – which lasted for a pretty healthy seven hundred years or more and helps explain all those Moors and Christian festivals and why they keep putting up statues of hard-working mojaqueras with their faces covered all over Mojácar. At any rate, such a Moorish girl had once lifted her veil just enough to take a healthy chug of some milky looking drink when a Christian king, Jaime 1 de Aragon, happened along on his horse and asked if he could have a go. ‘Cor’, he said, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, ‘this is gold, girlie’, or, in valenciano, ‘Això és or, xata!’. Horchata.

Not many people like it, which seems a shame, and the drink is low on the list of an Almerían bar’s priorities, however, after twelve hundred years or so in relative obscurity, its time has finally come. As so many things in Spain, horchata has become During the Pope’s visit to Valencia, now one of the hold-outs of political. conservatism, Catholicism, anti-Zapatero-ism and so on, the horchata-makers filled the city with wheeled carts and sold the drink to the pilgrims. The Pope, following in Jaime’s royal footsteps, was graciously inclined to take an iced glass of the beverage, pronounced it delicious, and thus nailed its fate as a truly catholic… well, you get the picture.

Let me help. The drink is made by small manufacturers (not evil multinationals) and is the only thing that’s wet that cannot be mixed with any form of alcohol. It separates instantly when a shot of grog hits it. That, and it’s white. It started with Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Valencia in 2006. Now, as the Partido Popular has rather lost its teeth in the last few years with charges against it of corruption and general uselessness while the government espouses its new ideas, which could be summed up as ‘all change’ and ‘help!, we’re all going broke’, the champion of good old family values has been firmly passed to The Church, and its leader, the German Shepherd.

Please contrast this refreshment with the socialist’s preferred beverage – sparkling wine from Barcelona. The ubiquitous cava! In fact, the wealthier socialists (who used to be known in Spain as ‘los beautiful’, traditionally enjoy anything ‘pink’ as long as its expensive: smoked salmon, pink champers and anything Russian…

And horchata is good, too. Perhaps an acquired taste, but I often Dressed in white for purity, and quietly ‘not connecting’ with the enjoy one during the summer months. Unfortunately, come president during his visit, the Pope’s two days in the Levante city October 1st, like homemade ice cream, the tourists and were a success for the faithful – those who yearn for the good (hopefully) our voracious mosquito population, horchata and simple times of the past, a more innocent age, in short, the disappears for another season.

Sausages to you as well! As a nation the British love to holiday abroad, most of which are happy to survive for a week or two on the local food. The History of Cava, Spanish Sparkling Wine Champagne was the first sparkling wine and it is the most famous. Only wines made in the Champagne region of France may be called Champagne. Spain produces many fine sparkling wines, called cava after the cellars in which the wine is produced. These wines are made in the “méthode champenoise” or “Champagne method,” which is the same method that is used to make Champagne.

High quality sparkling wines, including cava and French champagne contain bubbles of carbon dioxide. How do the bubbles get there? First, the grapes are harvested and a white wine is produced. Several types of wine may be blended. Three grape varieties native to Spain are Xarello, Macabeo and Parellada.

Josep Raventós Fatjó of the Codorníu estate is said to have been the first to produce wine made in this method in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, (Cataluña,) Spain in 1872. He was so happy with the wine he made, that he ordered a cool cellar or cava dug in order to produce more sparkling wine. In a few short years , the family introduced their first bottles of cava to the public. It was an instant success, particularly with high society. Soon, sparkling wine from the Codorníu estate was being sent to the Spanish royal family. Today, thousands of visitors tour the Codorníu winery and cellars in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia in Cataluña.

Tirajo is the second step - The bottle is filled with the blended wine, then a syrupy mixture of yeast and sugars is added, called licor de tirajo. The yeast will cause the secondary fermentation to occur in the bottle. At this stage, the bottled wine is then transferred to the cellar with a temporary stopper.

Besides Codorníu, there are hundreds of sparkling wine producers in the area south of Barcelona called Penedés. The other sparkling wine producer which comes to mind immediately is Freixenet, pronounced “fresh-eh-net.” Its’ “cordon negro” product, a cava in a matte black bottle with gold writing.

During the second fermentation/aging, the bottles are turned occasionally. This process is called remuage and in some wineries, this is still done by hand. This turning of the bottles causes the residue from the yeast to collect in the neck of the wine bottle. The neck of the bottle is then frozen, which forces the sediment out and the bottle is re-corked immediately.

The Second Fermentation is next – The yeasts convert the sugar to carbon dioxide. This second fermentation and bottle aging occurs in the bottle and lasts for nine months at a temperature between 55 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit.

We recommend that you put the bottle of cava in the freezer or an ice chest filled with ice and bring out each bottle only when you are ready to drink it. (If you put bottles in the freezer, make sure not to forget about them or they will explode and you will have a sticky mess to clean up!) Cava should be served very cold to really enjoy it – about 46 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit. ! Serve in chilled flute champagne glasses so that the bubbles last longer, since they must travel Extra Brut – 0-6 grams of sugar per litre, the driest of the farther before they break the surface. Place the glasses in cava Brut – 0-15 grams of sugar per litre Extra Seco – the freezer for at least a half-hour before you will use them. 12-20 grams of sugar per litre Seco – 17-35 grams of Chilled glasses help to keep the cava cold. sugar per litre Semi-Seco – 33-50 grams of sugar per litre Dulce – More than 50 grams of sugar per litre, the sweetest As you are sipping your Spanish Cava this Holiday season, make a toast as the Spanish do with a resounding… of the cava ¡Próspero Año Nuevo!, to a Prosperous New Year! In 1991 EU (European Union) legal specifications were implemented to make sure that there was a consistent quality standard for Cava and at the same time, the EU recognized the origin of cava. However, there are very few producers of cava outside Cataluña. A star with four-points is printed on the base of the cork of any true cava. The six official types are as follows, depending on the sugar content:

Buying Cava Fortunately for those of us living in the USA, it is easy to find in almost any large grocery store. Prices of high quality Spanish cava are very favourable, in comparison to French Champagne or California sparkling wine! In general, the more expensive, the drier the cava. The less expensive cava is much sweeter. If you read the label on the less expensive bottles, you'll see that it is probably SemiSeco. Three brands of Spanish cava that you are likely to see in the store are: Codorníu – As we mentioned, the oldest and largest cava producer, with a variety of products available. If you are looking for something special, the company recently released a new product Gran Reserva Gran Codorníu, which according to the legal definition of a Gran Reserva has spent 30 months in the bottle. Freixenet – Again, a large cava producer, with a variety of products available. Although you may see their Carta Nevada Semi-Seco product in stores, in a clear glass bottle, the most popular (and higher quality) is the dramatic-looking Cordon Negro, which is a Brut cava and comes in a black bottle, with gold lettering on a black label. Also sold in a black bottle, but with silver accents is the Gran Cordon Negro, a Brut cava and a bit better quality. Segura Viudas – is a relative new-comer. The winery was established in 1950 and sold their first wines publicly in 1959. They produce a variety of sparkling wines, their premier product being Reserva Heredad, which is sold in a bottle with a highly decorative metal ring around the bottom of the bottle and a metal crest on the side. This is a good quality cava and a nice holiday gift, as well.

Studies suggest that some natural anti-inflammatory remedies, when used are a very effective mosquito bite remedy for certain individuals: papaverine (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology) and oral evening primrose oil (Lancet). You might find both of these products in a health food store. More natural preventions and remedies against mosquito bites are ice cubes, water, or cold drink cans. Avoid concentrated perfumes and strong hair sprays in the summer as Insects and Mosquito’s are attracted to smells. To prevent getting bitten, use organic repellents as these seem to work much better than pharmaceutical products. Mosquito Senses Mosquitoes have extremely poor eyesight, their compound eyes are in a spherical arrangement and the eyes are separated by blind spots, at 30 feet they mosquitos have difficulty distinguishing people from other objects of similar size and shape (tree stumps, large containers, etc.). However, when a mosquito gets within 10 feet, they can sense body heat, at which point they are able to locate their victim.

person becomes sensitised with subsequent mosquito bites, to the foreign proteins, and small, itchy, red bumps are likely to appear around 24 hours later. Relieving Mosquito Bite Itch You can make very effective remedies yourself, if your child is suffering from an annoying insect bite. The simplest anti-itching compound for relieving mosquito bite itch is a paste that is easily made from ingredients commonly found in most homes. The paste can be made by using only baking soda and water. Pour some baking soda into a small bowl and mix it with enough water to make a sticky paste. Spread the mixture on the irritated bite(s) for instant relief. Calamine lotion works in a similar way (though the effect of Calamine usually lasts longer). Mosquitoes and Humidity Mosquito bites are more common in humid climates because mosquito Thermal sensing is more acute when there is high humidity. It can increase by up to three times. To avoid mosquitoes you should try and avoid exposing yourself to highly humid areas. Why Mosquitoes Bite It is only the females that bite and they do so out of necessity rather than pleasure. Female Mosquitoes seek blood when they are preparing to lay eggs to produce healthy offspring. The normal diet of the mosquito consists of plant juices which contain none of the proteins a female needs in order to produce her eggs. She needs a concentrated source of protein, such as that of human blood. How Mosquito Bites Affect People The Mosquitoes when they bite are injecting saliva containing anti-coagulants (which prevent blood from clotting) into their victims.

How Mosquitoes Bite The female mosquito injects her saliva with stabs from her needle-like mouthparts through the skin of her victim, teeming with digestive enzymes and anti-coagulants. There is no reaction the first time a person is bitten. The BACK

scratching mosquito bites if the bacteria under fingernails are transferred to the wounds. Inflamed Mosquito Bites What can you do about those pesky, itchy bites?! There are many remedies to help alleviate irritating mosquito bites. Anti inflammatory drugs are good, mosquito bite remedies. Naproxen (Alieve) or Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) can reduce redness, itching, pain, swelling and fever as well. Topical steroid creams of various strengths are also useful. Reactions to mosquito bites, occasionally, can be severe enough to warrant systemic steroids. Some people are more prone to reactions from mosquito bites than others. Calamine Lotion is the most common treatment for mosquito bites. The soothing lotion can provide relief from itching or burning during the time it will take for a bite to heal. Treating Mosquito Bites Mosquito bites treatments include: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel, for a cool compress, or soak a flannel in cold water and press it on the bite (packaged frozen foods also work well). The treatments listed above are available in most convenience, and Chemists. Some individuals, however, are more prone to more severe reactions to mosquito bites than others. Don’t underestimate the severity of the situation, if none of the treatments above alleviate the discomfort caused by a bite. Seek medical attention to assess the problem. Mosquitoes Prefer Birds Humans are not the first choice for most mosquitoes, Mosquitoes seem to prefer bird hosts over any other host, as Mosquitoes are better able to track the scent of animals that are the most abundant in their habitat. So, if you are in an area with lots of animals you’re probably less likely to be singled out as a meal.

NEW TRAFFIC LAWS ARE OUT - GET READY TO START WALKING! By Ric Polansky The sun has cooled ever so slightly. The workday is done. Time to slip off into the confines of tribal friends and converse. It’s “tapa time”....that select moment of the working day shared with understanding compatriots at a favourite watering hole, exchange commiserations, short insights, tall tales, and outright lies. Somehow you’ve miraculously survived another day.

Then Pedro pops in. “My wife got done last week for not having a stamped insurance paper from the bank”. “Well joder”, announces Paco, “I got done for doing the speed limit just last week. Clocked me at 123 and the limit was 120…got fined 100 Euros and lost 3 points”. We all laughed. The tales had gone full table and everyone castigated. By total and absolute “coincidence”, everyone present had committed a finable offence all within the last two weeks. Decorum demanded my input. They turned to me. “Nothing happened to me.” I ejaculated. “But, four weeks ago my driver’s license was revoked for having lost 12 points”. The laughter was uproarious. It was my round. Not only was I the goat of the Guardia Civil, I had to pay for other’s to drink at my expense. “Go ahead and laugh—but you’ll be walking soon too”. Now, that’s where my conversation ended. Because one thing I’ve learned, no matter how bad it gets—Spaniards never, ever get pissed off. They are so used to being abused and not being able to do anything about it….It Becomes Water Off A Duck´s Back. Now, this is where the world is different. Other nationalities react (if they can). In other European countries you have a chance to litigate if you believe you have been wronged. Not here!

My group is totally Spanish. They presume I am too but chat with a noticeable speech impediment. The talk is sincere but always irreverent. No women are ever discussed unless they sachet into view. Mention of wives is taboo. Politics are a total waste of convivial conversation. Wines are novel to argue even though most drink beer. If you make the group laugh in unison, you buy the round. Hum or is highly valued. So I got mad. I took my perchance to a lawyer, and we appealed. “Look, I have had a Spanish driver’s license since Here, on Mojácar beach, you don’t have to sit too long 1970...one of the oldest in the region number 00217 for the before a Guardia Civil van trundles past. A few minutes later, entire province of Murica. How can this be? How can THEY another. It is a constant parade late into the evening. They (Trafico) just keep accumulating points until you finally lose are sharks on the prowl. If the recession isn’t bad enough for your right to drive?” I pleaded. “Forget it, Ric, there is nothing the destitute restaurants and bars, their customers have you can do. It’s the law”. Yes, it’s the law for you, not in “Trafico” lurking, waiting to pounce. power. And those in power never get fined. Have you ever heard of a member of parliament here in Spain lose his license for any driving offence? Even motoring while under the influence? No. You won’t either. EVER! Nudge nudge, wink wink.

“I hate those guys.” pronounces Manolo. “Just got fined for doing 130 on the motorway. It was a camera. 100 Euros and 3 points lost”. "Hey, me too!” blurts another. “They say I didn’t hesitate long enough at a yield sign. Pulled me over and fined me”. Not a nano second passes before Jose interrupts. “I got fined last week too for not having my chaleco (colourful waist coat) within view and reachable!” BACK

Page 20

Have you been reading the Spanish papers lately? OK. How about watching Spanish TV? Well, if you have you’d know that the media has been completely bombarded with full page advertisements by the DGT (Direccion General de Trafico, those pontiffs that run that section of the Guardia Civil) describing the lighter of the new laws. So much has been published lately that traffic fines and the new points system have vied for coverage along with the typical political corruption scandals. Tabloid national paper, El Pais, has announced that extra points were given to those that didn’t have any contrary points. And a “no tolerance” observance was also put into practice with all the fines and points soon to be doubling! Full page adverts were taken out each day in the press to tell you how “important it is to stop the mass carnage occurring on the motorways”. Mierda! That’s

Continued NEXT

Mojacarmagazine.com

“SPIN”! That’s what they want you to believe so that fines can be masqueraded, issued, dealt out like a frenzied dealer at a black jack table. The fact is that in 2008 the least amount of traffic deaths had occurred since 44 years ago. Let’s say it for what it is: political “spin” so that you can be bled by a new tax called highway fines. A blatant sham in these shameless times perpetrated by those in power to keep the cash flowing into their coffers. Get ready to pay huge fines shortly. Ask about them in the streets. Almost one in five has been hit already and plenty more are to come.

honest driving regulations. The 82,000 Euro bill for the full page adverts run by the DGT in El Pais were paid for within twelve minutes of fines slapped on the unsuspecting motorists of Madrid. A few years back the tidy sum of 200 Million Euros was collected. This year the DGT expects more than 416 Million (their estimate). My figures are far closer to five hundred million Euros—THIS YEAR! How can that be? Well, a few year’s back, radar cameras numbered in the couple of hundred. Within 15 months, they will amount to close to two thousand. And those new cameras are all over. Many are in unusual and unsuspected places so as to aid the ease of fining you but no particular regard for safety. Meanwhile, it just isn’t the cash accumulating...the points add up too. Soon, you too could become a member of the largest and fastest growing club in the nation: the SSLE (Spanish Shoe Leather Express). And, to get the money in quicker, the DGT have come up with a novel scheme to allow you to pay by Visa Card, on the spot. Or, you can obtain a 30% discount if you pay within 15 days. If not, the money will be taken from your bank account at a 20% surcharge! I want to be as fair as possible. I personally don’t believe that our mayoress would allow the overwhelming presence of the GC on the beach in the evenings knowing that all are suffering under the current depression. I also do not believe the town hall gets a kick back. But I have heard rumours of nasty interpretations of the new driving codes in that if you are wearing flip flops or shoes without a heel on them that too is a nasty driving offence.

Why is it “spin” if the murderous road kill rate has been reduced? Because the laws already in position were adequate. These frequently occurring “dangerous accidents” had already been depleted drastically by the simple reduction of so many fewer cars (drivers). Read the statistical facts. Petrol and diesel consumption is down a full 6% from 2007. Fewer cars have been sold (down 40%), and foreign tourist trade is also down 12% and it is almost the same for nationals. Do the numbers. If you have 20% fewer cars on the road, you’re bound to get a massive reduction in accidents. What is happening is you are being sold a spin so that you can be prepared for the upcoming KA-BOSH. These newspaper announcements are actually warning you that someone is going to reach into your pocket. Let me ask you, do you know of anyone to date that has been stopped that wasn’t fined? Here we are in the most unfortunate economical era in the last 80 years, and those remaining here are being awarded with a clandestine tax under the feigned auspices of fair and BACK

Mojacarmagazine.com Issue 12

What I DO KNOW is that the money flows directly into government coffers and is not regulated nor audited by anyone, other than those politicians CURRENTLY in control. For me it’s a disgusting and brazen affront to the citizens and residents living here; a covert and stealthy planned new TAX that these particular times don’t warrant. All done without shame, but oh so cleverly set up. A “multa” for all of us that are struggling already, gifted by those same politicians that clothe themselves during election time in Levi's and long sleeve white shirts rolled up to their elbows purporting to be of and with their common man.

leafed trailing geraniums. In fact botanically all are pelargoniums. 3. GENUINE ALL YEAR ROUND PATIOS. The patios designed not for tourists but to be used all year round by the inhabitants. The essential ingredients being: a. SHADE. Provided by trees in the centre or one or more corners. Popular trees being palms, ficus, fig, olives, jacaranda, judas tree, galan de noche, and cordylines Some also had an architectural citrus tree. b. THE SOUND OF WATER. From fountains in the middle of ponds, fountains against the wall and in some cases cascades between both. c. COLOURFUL AND PERFUMED WALLS. Firstly from window boxes and climbers such as bougainvillea, bignonias, jasmine, roses, honey suckles, passion flower, clematis and plumbago but with none or very few wall pots of geraniums. Secondly from tasteful displays of decorated plates, plaques , murals and memorabilia. d. COOL EVERGREEN PLANTS. Ferns, aspidistras, spider plants, spathiphyllum, pothos, bread plants, mother-in-laws tongue, were all popular and from their size survived well in the semi shade and at times deep shade of the patios. There were also succulents, cacti, bamboos and bonsais of various types. e. COLLECTIONS OF FLOWERING PLANTS IN POTS. Bulbs such as clivias, cyclamen, freesias, irises, lilies and agapanthus. Plants such as kalanchoa, begonias, fuchsias, pansies, busy lizzies, azaleas , some spectacular hydrangeas and a water lily in the pond.. f. INTERESTING AND AESTHETIC ARTEFACTS. Collections of interesting old or new pots, agricultural and city artefacts. g. COMFORTABLE AND AESTHETIC FURNITURE. For relaxing or dining alone or with company. Only once did we see a canopied swing chair. A few had trellis screens to crate private corners and covered pergolas for shade when the sun reached down into the well of the patio. h. SOFT MUSIC. Light music of your choice for relaxing. In Cordoba guitar and flamenco music was generally played quietly for effect. i. SUBTLE LIGHTING. A mix of spot lights, wall lights and standard lamps suitable for outside use when it rains down into the patio. j. A SUN BLIND. Most were open to the elements others had a convenient motorized cover that could be used for shelter from the mid day sun or storms. k. SOMETIMES THE FAMILY PET. A cat, budgerigar, fish in the pond or an ancient turtle. So if you decide to purchase a house with a patio style terrace there are many possibilities. But before you go into action consider: BACK

a. To what extent will the patio be important to your daily life style? b. What will be the maximum and minimum annual temperatures? The walls of the patio may raise the temperature just those few degrees required to prevent winter frost damage but in the summer the south facing wall can become scorching rather than warm and turn the courtyard into a furnace . c. Where is the natural shade ? Recognize that the larger the courtyard the lower the percentage of shade and the greater exposure to the sun in the summer and swirling cold winds in the winter. d. The levels of natural humidity and where the water from the roof and floor can run to. Decide whether it can be usefully harnessed or whether you have a serious drainage problem to deal with before you tackle the patio layout. When you get round to thinking about plants there are plenty to chose from in our book ‘Your Garden in Spain – From planning to planting and maintenance’. You will find it in local book shops and it is also available direct from the publisher on www.santanabooks.com and 952-485838. *Clodagh and Dick Handscombe’s books are available in the Mojacar area from Total Entertainment in Albox and Choice Entertainments in Herculavira and also by mail order by telephoning the publishers on 952.48-58-38 or clicking ‘Our Books’ on www.gardeninginspain.com’. Personal Profile.... Julie Bruce

The pupils have taken part in various fiestas, charity events and cultural days in Mojacar, Garrucha and surrounding areas.

The great thing about running Mojรกcar Magazine is the people you come into contact with, I have had the pleasure of writing about many famous locals and here is another opportunity for me to write about one of the many interesting locals. Julie Bruce...... From the Dance Academy tell me about yourself!

In 2008, we started Rhythmic gymnastics, as we were joined by ex Scottish International gymnast and coach Fiona Fenwick. Together we have entered the girls in competitions throughout Almeria and they have achieved a cast amount of medals and trophies, after only training for one year. At the end of each year our Musical Theatre pupils perform in a musical production and these have proved to be very popular with all nationalities. This year's production is Mary Poppins and the pupils are working hard in their rehearsals. For more information on classes and forthcoming events contact Julie on 697861071 or 950 462 215

In 1986 I was a Miss Dance of Great Britain finalist and also took part in theatre productions in London. A highlight of my career was taking part in Noel Edmonds 'Christmas Presents' after being nominated by my pupils. I sang and danced in 'Scrooge' on the West End. I passed my dance teachers qualifications at the age of 18 (23 years ago). In 1989 I opened my own Academy in Banbury, UK and pride myself on a 100% pass rate from my pupils. Some pupils were trained to a professional level and went on to University to study dance degrees. Others took to the stage or pursued the same path as myself and became dance teachers. Some of my old pupils now have their own academies. In 1997 my daughter Tamara was born and started her dancing at the tender age of 18 months. She is herself now helping me with the younger pupils in my academy. We moved to Spain in January 2006 for a better lifestyle and for me to bring my experience to a new area. My academy was started a month later and has gone from strength to strength, with over 500 exams being taken to date. BACK

Spanish bars and restaurants see revenues drop 9%

Spain car sales drop 38.7 per cent in May

During the month of June a total of 71,161 cars were registered, or 38.7 per cent less than the same month in The bar and restaurant industry in Spain has seen 2008. During the first five months of the year, a total of their revenues increase 6.6 per cent in July, over the 336,366 cars were sold, which results in a 42 per cent previous month of June, according to the latest decline, compared to the same period the previous year. figures released by the National Institute of Statistics. Car sales to private individuals appears to have only registered a 23 per cent decline, which suggest that the Nevertheless, in comparison to the previous year, the 2000€ plan is taking affect, which provides 2000€ to those volume of sales has dropped 9 per cent. Different areas of Spain have also been affected to different degrees. Greg Schellhammer, founder and managing director of the business brokerage, Crystal Consulting which specializes in bars, restaurants, nightclubs and hotels, points out that “while areas such as the Costa Blanca, which are heavily dependant on tourism have seen big drops of up to 40-60%, other areas such as Barcelona which are less dependant on tourism have seen revenues fall between 3050%”, The drop in revenues is also very dependant on the management behind a business. As Greg Schellhammer unveils “not every bar and restaurant is being affected by the recession to the same degree. While we have some clients complaining of revenues collapsing to 30-40% over last year, others are happily declaring a 30 per cent increase in revenues”, and the secret behind it is clear: “quality in a bar’s service and quality in a restaurants food clearly aids in beating the recession”. The elements determining the success of such businesses are manifold explains Greg, who has written the e-book Survive the Crisis in Spain, which details to great extent hundreds of tips that business owners can follow to survive. As the summer approaches, many bar and restaurant owners are betting on August’s high season tourism influx. Time will tell what comes of it. Worst drop in Spanish consumer prices in 57 years The Spanish consumer price index fell by a steep 0.9 per cent during the month of June, after an already declining three-month spiral, and a 0.2 percent decline in May, according to the Institute of National Statistics. The year-on-year drop was the steepest in 57 years. Inflation in Spain was negative in March for the first time since 1961, when the National Statistics Institute began tracking data. Spain is currently living the worst recession in over 50 years as it battles not only the financial crisis but also a collapsed property market.

Housing sales down by 28.6 per cent in 2008 Housing sales in 2008 reached 558,429 transactions in 2008, which gives a 28.6 per cent drop compared to figures from the previous year, according to the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica (INE). The drop in housing sales experienced in Spain during 2008, was even worse when looking at second hand homes which experienced a 39.3 per cent drop to 273,936 transactions. New build sales dropped 14.1 per cent to 284,493 transactions. The average number of sales in 2008 was 1,531 per 100,000 inhabitants. Murcia was the province which registered the most sales per 100,000 inhabitants with a total of 2,347 transactions followed by Castilla-La Mancha (2,183), La Rioja (2,145), Cantabria (2,003), Andalucía (1,900), the Comunidad Valenciana (1,892), Extremadura (1,717) and the Canary Islands (1,533). Coronation Street Star Flees Fires Coronation street star, Anne Kirkbride, is reported to have been among more than 1,500 people who were forced to evacuate their homes in Mojacar last week as one of eight wildfires swept to within just 150 yards of her front door. It was the second time in a week that Anne, 55, who plays the Street's much loved Dierdre Barlow, was forced to leave her holiday villa as hundreds of homes were under threat of being engulfed by fires which swept across the region. Other celebrities who have holiday homes in the area include singer, David Grey, ex-England cricketer, Ian Botham, and soccer stars Ashley Cole and David Bentley. Spain is the worst affected of the Mediterranean countries which have been hit by wildfires following intense heatwaves which began almost two weeks ago. Temperatures last week reached 48ยบC (118ยบF). France, Italy, and Greece have also been hit by fires which have taken the lives of at least eight people.

Great Steak... No Mistake! Ok, there’s no denying it, Mojacar has some great restaurants and pretty much whatever you fancy is available somewhere in the Village or on the Playa. Sharon and I tend to split our time, cooking at home and going out. On our last night we decided to try a meal at La Hacienda, a restaurant specializing in Argentinean Steak.

Transformers 2

My wife had the Sirloin and I opted for the rump, and we can genuinely say that it was the best steak we have ever tasted. Cooked perfectly it just melted in the mouth. Served with MUST COOK either baked potatoes or chips and a small salad it really hit the spot. What rounded it off was the live entertainment, in our opinion this one really is the bees knees!

COOKING WITH SHARON

Roasted Garlic Chicken - Pollo White Garlic Soup Recipe Sopa de Ajo Blanco al Horno con Ajo Roasted Chicken is a popular main dish in Spain and it’s simple enough for the novice cook to make successfully every time. This Spanish version of roasted chicken has more flavor by adding garlic and white wine. It is a good family dinner dish, particularly in the cold weather. Serve with fried potatoes and a simple green salad. Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 1 hour, 00 minutes

Ingredients: 1 whole roaster chicken (approx 3 lbs) 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil salt 3-4 cloves garlic 8 oz white wine 8 oz chicken broth 1/2 tsp salt 1 sprig fresh parsley

Preparation: This roast chicken recipe makes 4 servings. Heat the oven to 180C or 350F. Cut the chicken into 4 pieces. Rub the chicken pieces with extra virgin olive oil. Place chicken into a large ovenproof casserole dish. Place garlic cloves and 4 oz of white wine into a food processor and whirl until garlic is blended into the white wine. Add 4 oz of the broth and whirl until thoroughly mixed. Pour over chicken. Cover chicken with aluminum foil. Place casserole with chicken into hot oven on center rack. After 15 minutes in the oven, remove the aluminum foil from the casserole dish and baste the chicken with the juices. Continue to oven roast uncovered for 45 minutes. Periodically check to make sure that the liquid has not evaporated and add wine and broth as needed. The chicken should be tender when done. Remove from oven and serve with wine sauce. Home-fried potatoes and/or rustic bread goes well with the chicken. Variation: For more intense garlic and wine flavor, whirl wine, broth, salt and garlic cloves in food processor. Place chicken pieces in a glass dish and marinate the chicken overnight in this mixture (in the refrigerator).

Everyone has heard about the traditional red gazpacho soup, and many have tasted it. However, this recipe for cold white garlic soup or sopa de ajo blanco is just as tasty and refreshing. In fact, garlic lovers would probably vote for this soup hands down. It is easy, quick and healthy. We’ve never met a dinner guest who didn’t ask for seconds, so be sure to make a large batch. Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 00 minutes

Ingredients: 4 oz (1/2 cup) blanched, peeled almonds* 3-4 slices stale baguette or white bread 3 cloves garlic 4 cups (32 oz) water 5 Tbsp extra virgin Spanish olive oil 3-4 Tbsp Spanish sherry vinegar 16-20 seedless green grapes (optional) salt to taste

Preparation: This white garlic soup recipe makes 4 servings. * If you do not have time to blanch and peel the almonds, use a package of slivered almonds. Blanch and peel almonds. Dry thoroughly with paper towel and set aside. For simple instructions on blanching and peeling almonds, read About.com Greek Food Guide’s instructions Peel garlic. Trim crust from bread slices if using Frenchstyle or rustic bread. Place bread in 1-2 cups cold water to soak. While bread is soaking, place garlic and almonds into a food processor or blender. Blend on pulse until smooth. Remove bread from water with slotted spatula and squeeze out excess water. Tear bread into quarters and add bread and 1 tsp salt to processor or blender. Blend on pulse. While blending, slowly drizzle olive oil, then vinegar, and finally the water into blender or processor. Taste. Adjust salt, vinegar and oil to taste. Strain through a sieve into a container or bowl. Press as much as possible through the sieve. Seal and chill at least 2-3 hours or overnight. Serve in chilled bowls or glass mugs, with grapes on side.

Freetime What’s it about? Two years have passed since Megan Fox leant over Bumblebee’s bonnet in ripped denim shorts. The Autobots are still on earth, working alongside the US military to protect the world from further Decepticon attacks. One particularly evil Transformer – The Fallen – is masterminding a plan to destroy all the Autobots and, while he's at it, Earth. Meanwhile, Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) is starting college and Megan Fox is still wearing ripped denim shorts, except this time she’s bent over a motorbike and has had something injected into her lips. It’s weird. But hot. What’s good about it? Revenge of the Fallen is bigger and louder than its predecessor. There's a healthy dose of new characters. Visually, it rocks. The fight sequences are better choreographed and there’s more ‘expression’ in the up-close shots of the Transformers’ faces. Large parts of New York, Paris, Shanghai and the Egyptian desert all get blown to bits. In particular, a forest scene in which Optimus Prime slugs it out with three Decepticons (and unsheaths his magic swords), is awesome. As is the end sequence: the plot (and therefore the fate of the world) pivots on ‘magic dust’, the US army are shouting “Bring the rain!” and Megan Fox is scrambling around in white trousers while the sun sets on the pyramids, which are topped, tinsel-like, with giant shiny robots. It’s just so poetically retarded. What’s bad about it? Apart from Megan Fox, the best characters in Bay’s first film were Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. But here their screen time takes backstage to a pair of tedious Smart car-style Autobots called Mudflap and Skids. They’re the robotic equivalent of Jar Jar Binks, but exactly twice as annoying. And then there’s a Decepticon that’s basically a 200ft vacuum cleaner with a massive pair of wrecking balls. Which, obviously, is stupid. But the main problem is that it’s WAY too long. They could easily have lopped 45 minutes off and ended up with a better film.

Films & Books Clare Clark’s London of 1719 is a putrid place which roars like the ocean, where the ash-heaps crawl with beggars and people rush about on business so urgent that the loss of even a minute would have dire consequences. Into this chaos is cast our conarrator, headstrong 15year-old Eliza Tally, after she falls pregnant by the local landowner’s cad of a son. The capital is a world away from the small parish outside Newcastle where Eliza grew up with her mother, and the house to which she is sent to work as a servant (in return for the abortion of the loathed maggot inside her, or so Eliza believes) is a dark prison. The dual narrative also lets us into the mind of her master. While others see Grayson Black as a mere tradesman, really he is intent on proving himself a scientist, thanks to his theory that whatever a woman feels or sees during her pregnancy will be written all over the unborn child. He sets about attempting to prove this through experiments he conducts within his home on his two pregnant servant girls – one of them, of course, being Eliza. Eliza he wishes to terrify; to the hare-lipped, childlike Mary he gives a monkey, so that a monkey might be born. As Grayson slips ever further into opium addiction and madness, the rest of the household desperately try to save themselves. Clark’s impressively atmospheric historical novels (this is the follow-up to ‘The Great Stink’) are steeped in London as it really was. Both page- and stomach-turning, ‘The Nature of Monsters’ pulls no punches and gilds no edges for the modern reader.

Verdict: It’s like watching a blender for two hours while someone shouts at you. And then the last half an hour is the same, except it’s more like having your head strapped to a washing machine while you watch a blender and someone shouts at you. Still, wicked fun. BACK

‘Alcazaba apartments’ offer a unique combination of peaceful seclusion and outstanding sea-views. Its desirable location means that the apartments enjoy full sun on their terraces morning till night. A factor that, together with Mojacar’s unique all-year round sunny climate, makes it extremely attractive to those wishing to benefit from the winter sun. The complex is small in size and commands an elevated position, with only 31 apartments sharing its private pool, which makes for a more private environment within which to holiday, as opposed to a large complex with a number of apartments sharing one pool facility.

David G and family - Manchester Why did you move? My family and I had been spending holidays in the area for years and really grew to like the lifestyle for the kids and ourselves. We had had enough of the weather in the UK and decided enough was enough!

How did you make the dream a reality? I had found it hard to get people to take us seriously when we were living in the UK as I guess there are plenty of people who say they are going to move out to Spain and never do! We managed to save some money for a few months of living on a shoestring and then just went for it by moving out! I devoted all my attention to trying to get a job and registered with an agency who subsequent invited me to a meeting and then got me some interviews. I was lucky enough to be offered a job in Gibraltar after 4 weeks of trying and have not looked back. Advice? If it is truly something you are committed to then you will need to make sacrifices to make it happen but it worth it in the end. NEXT

A little bit of England Bed and Breakfast Pje. El Púlpito Almanzora 04850 Cantoria www.alittlebitofengland.es

A little bit of England (named after the owner, Brenda England) is a reformed Cortijo located in a tiny hamlet just outside of the traditional Spanish village of Almanzora and within easy walking distance of the village amenities. The village itself has 5 bars, a swimming pool, a supermarket/ tobacconists, 2 banks, one with a cashpoint, a garden shop and an Estate Agent. The thriving market towns of Albox, Cantoria, Fines, Albanchez, Arboleas and Olula del Rio are within a short driving distance and the coast can easily be reached in under 40 minutes. A hire car is essential as the public transport links are rather sparse and geared to the working day. The B&B facility occupies the upper floor of the house and consists of a double and a twin bedroom both with large ensuite bathrooms, a guest lounge/breakfast room with Sky television, a large landing area with a dedicated guest computer with broadband Internet access, also an additional network (ethernet) socket for guest use with their own equipment. No smoking is permitted anywhere inside the building.

The entire emphasis of the business is family-friendly and the tariff reflects this, with an imaginative pricing structure for single people, couples and especially families, whereby the lounge/breakfast room converts to a 3rd bedroom to allow for the accommodation of a larger family with up to 4 children aged under 11 years, although there is allowance for negotiation on children’s ages. Bookings are made by request through a form on the web site, although there is no real-time on-line booking facility There is also the facility to make an enquiry using only your name and email address. A deposit is not required for stays of less than 1 week.

The availability of broadband Internet access means that guests can keep up to date with emails and also contact relatives and friends using the skype VOIP system and Microsoft Instant Messenger. There is also a telephone available for guests to make short (under 1 minute) calls free of charge.

Prices start from just €12.50 per person or €37.50 per family of 4 or €47.50 per family of 6 per night . Check out the web site for full pricing details.

Commenting on his own ancestors, he added: "On my father's side miners and farm labourers. On my mother's - railwaymen and domestics. My story was so boring they had to cancel the entire project. I was gutted." Parkinson revealed that the snub came after he turned down approaches from ITV1's All Star Mr and Mrs and I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!. He said: "Of all the celebrity-based telly programmes, this was the only one I wanted to be on." Who Do You Think You Are? airs on Wednesday nights on BBC One. Speaking of the struggle in an interview with The Mirror, Britton explained: "I was permanently exhausted. So tired I didn't know where to put myself and it nearly drove me insane. I was barely keeping my head above water. "I felt utterly drained. There was only one way out - I would have to give up the show. It was just one thought going round and round in my head: 'I can't do it on so little sleep'." Britton added that she was ready to quit the show after her contract expired in 2004, but changed her mind following a confrontation with her colleague Phillip Schofield. She admitted: "One day Phillip came into my dressing room, shut the door and just stood there, arms folded. 'You're stupid,' he said. 'You've got to do it. Apart from anything else I can't do it without you. It would be like Morecambe without Wise'." The host eventually negotiated a new arrangement with ITV which saw her fronting the show for three days a week. This increased to four once Winnie started school. Britton finally decided to

Altogether Now! SING A SONG OF PARLIAMENT, POCKETS FULL OF CASH, FRAUDULENTLY CLAIMING AND ADDING TO THEIR STASH; WITH THEIR PLOY DISCOVERED THEY SAID THEY'LL GIVE IT BACK. IF YOU OR I HAD DONE THE SAME WE'D PROMPTLY GET THE SACK.

SING A SONG OF FREEBIES, SNOUTS ALL IN THE TROUGH. GIVING BACK THEIR ILL- GOT GAINS IS JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH. SPONGING OFF OUR EARNINGS WITH A LIKELY TALE, IF WORKING FOLK HAD DONE THE SAME THEY'D SOON END UP IN JAIL.

SING A SONG OF FRAUDSTERS COUNTING OUT THEIR MONEY. THEY SMILE AND LOOK QUITE UNASHAMED, AS THOUGH THEY THINK ITS FUNNY; SITTING IN A SECRET PLACE, COUNTING OUT THEIR DOSH, ON PLUGS FOR BATHS AND CLEANING MOATS, FOR CRISPS AND ORANGE SQUASH.

SING A SONG OF MP's WHO TOOK US FOR A RIDE. IT'S UP TO US ELECTION TIME THEIR FUTURE TO DECIDE. IT'S GONE TOO FAR TO BRING BACK TRUST OF ANYONE IN POWER. TO MOST OF US THEY'LL ALWAYS BE A SHIFTY, CROOKED SHOWER. BACK

By Ric Polansky Karen and I are now sipping "bolas" (white wine ice cold, with more ice and lemonade + fruit) Yesterday started normal, a run into Vera to sign some "fin de accounting ano for all my companies", a stop off at an unfashionable but inexpensive bar/restaurant for Tapas and beer and then home. On the way home the wind was so hot I HAD TO ROLL UP THE WINDOWS. THE SIGN at the pharmacy read 48-c....when we got to Mojacar it had cooled down to 44-c but word was out "the fires had started again"

one call that begged her to drive down to the beach and save the horses at Didi's which she left to do, but the Guardia had sealed off the entire town.. evacuated all the hotels and urbanization's (La Parata, Lomos, el cantal, and all the surrounding apartments... cars were leaving in the droves... but when Karen tried to drive to help Didi the GC stopped her and mae her walk the entire way on foot some 1.5 miles in heavy wellingtons (rubber boots for field work). But they got the horses rounded up and headed them toward the beach. She arrived back at midnight. At that time there was a complete fire line across all the mountains going north as far as we could see. The Parata was aglow. Every so often when we heard explosions. Houses? camping sheds? we just didn't know what to think... but the air was getting hotter and hotter and the winds chocking.

. (I had written an article about what a MIRACLE it was that it was put out, but since then huge fires in four opposite corners of Spain were raging out of control-- so panic came immediately into my thoughts.) Joby and Jo came up for drinks and to watch the undertakings... billowing dark clouds were forming high above the mountains that separate us from Cortijo Grande. Then they turned to fire with flames 30-40 ft high, crested and started their relentless march toward our house.

I decided to try to get some rest at 2:45 and Joby stayed up 2 hours more. We both felt that the fire seemed to be slowing. The winds weren't gusting but the glow allowed one to read outside if you could do so with all the heavy carbonised fumes. When I awoke the next day devastation greeted me. The mountains and hills coming toward us were entirely blackened. Fires had kept their line and were about 400 meters from the houses but certainly didn't have the rage as the night before.

The winds increased up to 80 KM per hour in vicious gusts... frantic phone calls were coming in for Karen from all her volunteers. "what should I do? my dogs?"...Karen took BACK

Page 78

When I went to work I was greeted with shouts "the Parata has gone completely, every house!" Jenn's house is there and I was dejected. I knocked off some e mails and answered some more... THEN decided I had to face charcoal facts and go see for myself. From well down below I could see all the houses there but black between them

were all the scrub land was. the closer I got the better I felt, could it be?-- it was !

All around the houses the land was scorched, burnt badly, right up to the garden and boundary walls BUT no house damage! I have more to say, but am too tired. Tried to have a siesta, (kip) but too many aircraft flying around still putting out the fires. No I don't have fire insurance... for what? .. all that can burn is the doors.

Karen decided to treat us to one of her famed spaghetti diners and rest, but calls came in from a friend to do in interview in English...for a local station. I was happy to mumble in English as I was so tired I could barely speak Spanish... a friend has just written me this note: If all else fails we could always sell your autograph. You made national news over here ITV news at six well done. Steve Whoops, time for another drink. Good night and God bless the beer God, tennis God, any god, all Gods! BACK
