Dear Editor What do your readers think? Whilst the asking prices of many properties don't seemed to have changed in the last 6 months, as in the UK a combination of economy and euro exchange, would be interested in understanding realistic changes which have occurred to house apartment prices have reduced in the area? Ron Middleton Dear Sir UNFORTUNATELY, some people are not living in the real world when he asks why the word ‘Paki’ causes ‘an outcry of rage’ to people from Pakistan. While terms such as Taffy and Pom are certainly used in the often affectionate teasing of Welsh and English people, the same cannot be said of the word Paki. The term is used by people who should know better to describe — usually in a derogatory manner — anyone who appears to originate from the Indian subcontinent. In much the same way, ‘dago’ is used to insult anyone who appears to come from Italy or Spain or anywhere vaguely Mediterranean. Skinhead gangs in the 1970s would regularly scrawl the

Special places: The artisan's workshops of Sorbas and Nijar by Melanie of Almeria Art, and Portrait Artist at Hotel Valle del Este, Vera in Spain Recently, however, craftspeople in the developed world have once again started to flourish as the population as a whole re-evaluates their work alongside heightened concerns about ecological issues and better appreciation of a more natural way of life with fewer machines and greater ecological balance. Southwest of Mojácar it is possible to visit some of the more traditional pottery workshops. Sorbas is well known in this respect. This extraordinary place with some houses perched on the top of a gorge in a dramatic manner reminiscent of the hanging houses of Cuenca, central Spain, has quite a number of ceramic workshops or alfarerias with products sold in the Barrio de las Alfarerias around the central square as well as on the outskirts of the town. Equally Níjar, just down the road, is famed for its handmade pottery manufactured in local workshops and sold in the shops along the Avenida García Lorca and the Barrio Alfarero in the Calle Real running parallel to the main street, where you can find the alrarerias of Gongora, Granados, El Oficio and Angel y Loli. You will also see the shop-studio (La Tienda de los Milagros or 'Shop of Miracles') of the English ceramic artist Matthew Weir (although an appointment will be needed to look round). Matthew is a graduate from Oxford University and arrived from London around twenty years ago to learn pottery. Níjar is also renowned for its jarapas: quilts, curtains and rugs made from rags, which are widely sold around the town. Article 130 of the Spanish Constitution states "Public authorities should strive to modernise and develop all I recommend a visit to both of these special places. economic sectors including agriculture, livestock, fisheries and handicrafts in order to increase the standard of living of all Spaniards." Around Mojácar there are countless craftspeople working from workshops or small studios at home, some of which can be visited.

The New Year’s Revolution by Lenox Napier Let’s just take a step back for a moment. The Mediterranean coast of Spain is Europe’s answer to Florida. We don’t have much industry and, until relatively recently, the land wasn’t worth much. A few people lived here, usually dreaming of a better life. Somewhere else. In Andalucía, they moved to the industrial areas of Catalonia in the north. They went abroad to Germany or France. Some went further and settled in Argentina. Those that remained lived badly and without comfort. Our town of Mojácar in the province of Almería, now an expensive resort with apartments squeezed into every

Until things go wrong. There are around 380,000 Britons living full-time in Spain, if you believe the Spanish statistics agency (INE), which number is based, unfortunately, on the Britons themselves who have registered themselves as being resident. Many, inspired no doubt by the laissez faire system championed above, simply don’t bother. The British Foreign Office estimates the number of Britons who have left the UK for a new life in Spain, at somewhere between 750,000 and a million. That’s quite a difference. Then, you can add the Dutch, the Germans, the French, Norwegians and Irish, together with a healthy number of Americans, Canadians and Australians and so on – all living quietly in Spain, mostly congregated in the Mediterranean provinces and the islands. Very nice too. The Spaniards, as we have seen, have little idea of the numbers involved. They can state with some authority how many tourists come to Spain each year (with numbers supplied by the hotels), but the foreign residents don’t particularly stay in hotels. There are no more border controls with France or other members of the Schengen Accord of Free Circulation, so visiting Spain for most Europeans is about as well-documented as might be a Californian visiting Oregon, or somebody from London going to Manchester.

crevice that the planners (and their cousins) can find, used to be a forgotten ruin. In 1900, there were some six thousand people living in our municipality. By 1960, this had fallen to 600. There was no money, no income. The agriculture was gone with the fall of the water table. Beach-land went for a handful of cents. There were no takers. Nowadays, we are a wealthy town, built exclusively on foreign income. The money has come from tourism (a fickle mistress, where the report of better or cheaper resorts elsewhere can sucker-punch the hotels) and ‘residential tourism’, as the Spanish like to term the relocation of the Northern Europeans to Southern Spain. Most of these settlers are retired and are here for the sun, the (relatively cheap) prices, the security and, above all, the Cheap Tourism? consideration that their new home and their other investments locally are safe. be here all year long, spending money for 365 days rather than just five (apparently the average stay of a tourist). They’ll not only spend more, they’ll be doing it for seventy times longer in any twelvemonth period! This makes them far more useful (per capita) to the Spanish exchequer. But, they are more useful still, as they must import funds to buy a house. A car, furniture, clothes and a thousand other things a tourist doesn’t buy. They will generate jobs – builders, painters, gardeners. They’ll keep the local stores and restaurants running. Will the Spanish authorities see this? It appears not.

Corruption While there are now many towns along the southern coast where there are more Northern Europeans than Spaniards, the former group has no power, no strength and no politics. Unlike Miami where over the decades the out-of-towners have eventually wrested control of the city, the foreign residents have made no

– remembering the old Moorish way of doing things – wouldn’t want to upset the financial applecart of truly staggering ‘institutional advertising’ which keeps them both alive and mute. While it is incomprehensible why the Junta de Andalucía would do such a thing – risking massive investment from abroad for those small communities along the coast which have no industry or agriculture to speak of – they decided to compound the error by declaring an extra 5,000 homes in the interior of the province of Almería to also be ‘illegal’. Homes which, in every case, belong to Northern Europeans. Homes, even urbanisations, which are apparently without the proper paperwork. All of them built by local builders, with the town hall permits in place, the notary public’s signatures, the bank, the lawyers and everyone else’s best wishes and permissions. All, we are now told, corrupt and without value. It’s happening all over the Andalucian autonomous region (the south of Spain). Foreign owned homes in Marbella, in Granada, in Ronda, Jeréz and in Almería. In the Valencian Region, it’s even worse. There they have a thing called ‘land-grab’ where local businessmen can legally take half your land – for commercial interests – and charge you a massive fee for the pleasure. The Andalucians are said to be intrigued by the idea. Institutional and arbitrary demolition orders, corrupt town halls, bent lawyers and crooked public servants. So, last week we held a protest in the local city of Almería. Upsetting the traffic and blowing whistles and waving banners, the ex-pat Brits (plus friends) put on their carpet-slippers and their suntan oil (the weather is very good here) and hit the streets. We gave speeches outside the Junta’s building and we talked to the press: after all, several hundred elderly foreigners, some even in wheelchairs, clogging up a modern Spanish city doesn’t happen every day of the week. On the same day, a group of Euro-deputies from Brussels visited Valencia to see for themselves how ‘displaced Europeans’ are treated in Spain.

effort: perhaps because, when you are retired, all you want is some peace and quiet. Which is where things start to get tricky. The ‘laissez faire’ thing, together with the lack of political strength of this group, means that sooner or later something will go wrong. It’s not a social problem as the Spanish are easy-going and welcoming; it’s a political problem. A year ago, a foreign-owned house in Vera, Almería was bulldozed down by the regional authority – the Junta de Andalucía based in far off Seville. It was as if the Texans knocked down a house – just one – in California belonging to a New Yorker. The reason was patently absurd: the house was ‘illegal’ according to the authorities, built with the town halls permission, but without the Junta de Andalucía’s blessings. Oddly, the surrounding houses, with the same conditions, seem to be OK. The family was a retired couple from England, tossed into the street without explanation or compensation. A year later, they are (still) living in a nearby shed, with no water or electric connection.

Did the protest make a difference? Once again, the foreign media covered it: once again, the Spanish media barely touched it. Perhaps the Junta de Andalucía took some notice, as their shortsighted policy of disturbing the reasonably wealthy foreign investors here must be costing them (and their voters) hundreds of millions of euros a year in lost sales. For many of us, living under the threat of losing our house, or having to pay massive extra fees to ‘legalise’ it, or being forced to wait for years in some form of legal limbo, when one is elderly and retired from an active career, is unnecessary, stressful and unfair.

As for the unfortunate couple who had both their dream and their house taken from them in that callous attack a year ago, they were able to briefly interview the local representative of the Seville government following the protest. Let’s introduce them. They are called Len and Helen Prior. They are both 64 years old and they live in a garage. The creature from the regional government, in charge of ‘public works and housing’, said that he personally felt for While this news hit the international media (friends of mine in them but that ‘the law must take its course’. Miami and Boston separately heard me talking about this on the BBC World Radio), nothing appeared in the Spanish press which Have you ever heard a Spaniard say that before?

A GUIDE TO SPANISH ‘WEALTH TAX’ - WHAT IS IT AND HOW IS IT CALCULATED? - AND HAS IT NOW BEEN ABOLISHED? by Mark Mountney There has been, and remains, a great deal of confusion over this Non Resident tax and, following a very recent change in tax law, this is an opportunity to clarify, once and for all, exactly what this tax is, how it is calculated and precisely who it effects! What is it and How is it calculated? The tax is in been in force for many years, much to the dismay of the EU, and is an effective asset tax for Non Residents holding a property in Spain. The EU have requested the Spanish Government to remove this punitive tax as it is contrary to the EU Constitution. At last, this has been addressed (at least in part)! It is important to note that this tax does NOT apply to full Spanish Tax Residents; that is those individuals who submit an annual tax return in relation to their income. Non (Tax) Residents do not do so, of course, but rather they have to file Form 214 which is referred to as a ‘Wealth Tax’ return.

ii) Any revised value imposed by the tax authorities iii) Escritura value 2) The income tax element (Renta) is calculated at 24% of 2% of the valor catastral (1.1% if it has been revised since 1st January 1994 or 2% if not). The simplified Form 214 can only be used if just one property is owned and a separate declaration has to be made in respect of each person named in the title deed with the base upon which the taxes are calculated divided by the number of owners. The taxes can be paid at any time during the year following that in which they become due at any bank.

If more than one property with a different referencia catastral is owned (even if it is just a lock-up or a garage) the declarations have to be effected on Form 714 for the patrimonio and Form 210 for the renta and the declaration has to be made from the 1st May to 30th June in the year following that for which the There are 2 elements of taxation that are generally classified as taxes are due. It is still individual declarations for each owner. All ‘Wealth Tax’ and they are returned at the same time and on the of the properties may be listed on one form 714 for the same form. patrimonio but a separate form has to be submitted for each property in respect of the renta. 1) Patrimonio is calculated at 0.2%, up to €167,129.45 and on a sliding scale thereafter based on the highest of the three If you rent out your property you should pay separate taxes on following values; these rentals pro rata according to the number of days that it is i) Valor Catastral (rateable value) rented. If you use the figures as instructed AEAT (Hacienda) cannot challenge your declaration just because the valores catastrales have not been revised. This is taken dealt with by using a multiplier of 2% if there has been no revision since 1994 and 1.1% if there has. Example Calculation 1) Escritura Value € 100,000 X 0.2% € 200 Sub Total 1) 2) Catastral Value € 50,000 X 1.1 Multiplier 55,000 X 0.2% € 110 Sub Total 2) 3) Total to pay € 310 And has it now been abolished? Proposals were submitted in April 2007 to eliminate the Patrimonio element for 2008 and this was made statute on 25th December 2008. HOWEVER NOTE that the Renta element of the tax (Income Tax) will still remain payable with no change yet proposed. Many times I have been asked ‘why I chose Mojacar’? The continuing Story by EJAY I’d love to say that I would have happily stayed in my cave and lived the ‘good life’ without a care, but in truth I am no Ray Mears, and despite my earthly and hippie ways, my idea of survival lends itself more to nipping into the nearest supermarket or bar, rather than fashioning a spear from a piece of old driftwood and hunting for fish in the shallows of the Med, not that the idea doesn’t appeal to me because it does, but as hungry as I may ever be the notion of killing a living creature goes against my grain,….so the supermarket and it’s prepared produce wins every time.

Me and my first car in Mojacar

My cave in Mojacar found by Sharon again The underlying problem with my survival technique however is not the need for a good Swiss Army knife and a lump of flint. Although should I have gone rampaging through the local supermarket waving either one in my hunt for food I’m sure I would have been offered a bed for the night, together with a free supper, alongside all the other crazy inmates of the nearest sanatorium, what my technique required was money, and mine was all but gone.

every night. It was a smoky atmospheric place where most of the liberated denizens of the town seemed to congregate. The Blues and steamy Jazz that Bob would play on the bar’s stereo only added to this magical cocktail of ambience that I loved so much, Tito and Barbara would often sit on the terrace laughing their way through a game of Backgammon, Rick Davies would entertain us with today’s tale of how he managed to stay awake all day, and the barefoot Etienne held us spellbound reflecting on his time in the town and how he built El Buccanero and Kontiki. Mike Solo and the lovely Helen would be regular visitors, as would Lenox Napier who would quietly slip in for a relaxing unwind, in short many of the faces that made Mojacar the place I love would be in The Nail, each soaking in the mood of the place along side a moonlit Mediterranean calm.

Living the carefree hippie life from a beach cave on the edge of the Med is a romantic notion for sure, but sadly it is one that only ever works well in a Stevenson novel. The reality of life in the raw, especially in a small town like Mojacar where everyone knew everyone, is that as a cave dwelling hippie type you soon become painted as a drug guzzling beach bum, and thereby unemployable. This fact was to reach me far too late to save the two perfectly good pairs of espadrilles that I destroyed in my daily pounding of all the businesses on the Playa in search of work. It would be a man that I grew to consider to be my ‘Guru’ that brought it to my attention. My beautiful Granddaughter Kadie, she's fourteen Bob ran a bar on the strip called The Rusty Nail, it was a bar now, "God help us!!" Los Amigos for a coffee and Brandy, that stop off without me realising it was to prove crucial to my future in the town.

Beachbum Ejay It was Bob who pointed out to me the drawbacks of my beach lifestyle. Bob himself a former hippie had arrived in Mojacar on a cloud of marijuana back in the late sixties, one of the many disillusioned youngsters who dropped out of societies type casting to follow the hippie trail, a trail that for many ended in Mojacar. Bob’s knowledge of the area and the Spanish people was amazing, and so along with his Spanish wife Paca and lovely young daughter Sarah he became not only my Guru figure but my saviour and my friend. Bob taught me that if I was to be taken seriously in the town then I should get off the beach, in other words I needed an address. So with his invaluable guidance and the help of the indispensable Sheila who with her husband Dave ran Los Amigos, I parted with my last penny for one month’s rent on a studio in the Indalo Apartments. The idea of spending my very last on a room didn’t really appeal to me, especially one alive with rampaging cucarachas, and after all I was now truly skint, but Bob assured me that this was the way to do it and I trusted him. He also offered me my first ever job, although it was a job with a difference, the difference was I wouldn’t get paid, but it would turn out to be the best thing he could have done for me. My job was to clean his bar every day, my reward for this was a breakfast every morning and a free bar in the Nail every night, Bob also took me every day to bar Omega where he introduced me to the owner Diego and his wife Carmen. These two lovely people became very good friends to me over the coming months and a great aide to my learning their wonderful language, they also helped to find me work labouring for the local Spanish builders who frequented Omega. Before I knew it I was earning money and becoming respected. I also picked up work from The Rusty Nail on my free nightly visits, and all of this was thanks to Bob and his guidance.

My Bar As we made our way to Omega we reached Music Musica just as Ruth had arrived and was struggling to empty her car of stock, after saying hello to Bob she asked if she could ‘borrow’ me to help her as she was running late, I can still see Bob winking at me with a knowing grin, needless to say I helped her and found myself with my first full time paid job in Mojacar. I still cleaned the Nail every morning, and from there I would go to meet Ruth and clean Music Musica. Survival in Mojacar meant saying ‘yes’ to every opportunity that was offered, no matter what it was, and so when Ruth’s hubby Lennie asked me one day if I could paint houses I of course told him I could, “well it can’t be hard” I told myself!, So I now found myself painting Villas for those who’s lives had been better blessed than mine, and when Lennie had no work on I would team up with Bedar Ray, a wonderful guy and a great mate, to paint even more Villas. This meant my days were now full, cleaning two bars and then hitting the

‘whitewash’(or so I thought!). I was enjoying a well earned beer one night in Musica with Ray when Ruth asked me if I wouldn’t mind helping out just for one night, she was busy and in need of a glass collector I went for it! , That one night lasted for two years, from glass collecting to barman to Karaoke presenter, and I loved every minute of it. Each night (or early morning) after work I would always slide into Ables for a night cap, I loved this bar, and along with The Rusty Nail this was the most atmospheric bar on the Playa for me, Randolph a lovely Dutch guy ran the place along with Jose a likeable Gitano from Turre, it was a great place to unwind in the small hours and it was where I learned to love Tequila slammers!!. Although Randolf always wore a cheery smile and welcomed his friends with an open generosity, his personal life was in a mess, and it was a sad day when he closed the door on Ables for the last time. Ruth’s son in law Damien held the freehold for Ables, and although he lived in the UK he was a frequent visitor to Mojacar, and it was on one such visit that I was asked by Ruth if I would like to rent it, I couldn’t say ‘yes’ fast enough, and so I now had my own bar in Mojacar, and one of my first customers through the door was Bob ‘the Guru’, “thanks Bob!!”.

With my Mum and Dad! As for my cave, the last time I was down there it was inhabited by very nice French girl, a true hippie chick and artist, who like me did her hunting and gathering in Tomas’ supermarket!!!,……. “I hope her time in Mojacar was as happy as mine”.

I am sure that you will agree that is a wonderful story supplied by Ejay and Mojacar Magazine would like to thank him for sharing his experiences with us. Page 10

Teen drinking parties in Mojacar to be banned

Hardest workers

The Mayor of Mojacar, Rosa María Cano Montoya, has issued a decree banning the "Botellon", a Spanish phenomenon whereby the youths gather in the streets and plazas to drink and party until the early hours of the morning. The Mayor states that the gathering of people in the streets in order to drink large quantities of alcohol, play excessively loud music and take part in other anti-social behaviour is having an undesirable effect on those living in the area. Snoring might seem like a small and slightly funny problem – until you have to share a room with someone who does it. It ruins relationships and can cause exhaustion to snorers, who may also be disturbed by their own night noise. There are around 15 million snorers in the UK, the majority of them men – and that number is set to snore – sorry, soar

Robert Royston, a clinical scientist at the Royal National Throat Nose & Ear Hospital, London, predicts: “The number of snorers will go up in the future because of the increase in obesity which can cause or worsen the condition. “This is unfortunate because snoring – often dismissed as a joke - can have a devastating effect on people’s lives. It can lead to the breakdown of relationships because partners cannot endure the disturbed or sleepless nights caused by it.”

If snoring is caused by the tongue dropping to the back of the throat causing an obstruction, there’s a device like a gum shield called a Mandibular Advancement Splint. It sits in the mouth and brings the lower jaw forward which increases the airway area. But if snoring is particularly severe and has a palate-based cause, surgery is sometimes recommended. Robert urges snorers and their partners whose lives are This is considered only after a sleep-based study and may badly affected by snoring (an estimated 30 million people) to not be offered to those who smoke or drink. seek help. What causes it? Snoring can be caused by a number of factors. One major 25 per cent of partners of snorers would choose to sleep cause is overeating and lack of exercise which leads to an separately if they could because of the noise, according to a increase of fat around the throat. A narrow airway is much more likely to vibrate - loudly. He adds: “We regularly see snoring levels of around 80 decibels of sound pressure which compares with having the television on in a bedroom. Some people snore even louder, around 92 sound pressure decibels, which equates with the sort of noise you’d find in a particularly noisy pub.”

Another common cause is excessive or heavy drinking. This is because alcohol causes the throat muscles to relax, and it also leads to nasal irritation. Allergies to feather pillows, dust mites and pet hair are other common causes of severe snoring. While asthma and eczema are also associated with snoring problems, as are smoking, sleeping tablets and sedatives. Help is at hand If you are worried about snoring, the first step should be to consult your GP for advice. If you’re overweight, try to lose some, particularly around the neck area – men with a collar size of 16.5 and over are much more likely to snore. For smokers, as usual, the advice is to give up smoking, or at least avoid smoking and alcohol for at least four hours before bed. It can be helpful to try and sleep on your side rather than your back, as your airways will be less restricted. There are also a number of natural remedies you may wish to try. Visit the Help Stop Snoring website (www.stopsnoring.co.uk) for more information. Treatments Although snoring can cause sleepless nights, there are some very effective treatments available. Nasal sprays can reduce stuffiness caused by allergies, while snorers who breathe through their mouths can use oral shields to help keep the mouth closed.

Sweet, sticky and delicious, honey has been making our lives sweeter for thousands of years. But there is much more to honey than meets the eye. In an age where processed food, artificial flavourings and added colours are piled high on the shelves of very supermarket, honey stands out as one of the few completely pure and natural foods available to us.

Luckily for us, bees don’t seem to be afraid of a bit of hard work and tend to make much more honey than they need, which means bee keepers can harvest the honey and we get to share the fruits of their labour.

For centuries it has been used in cooking, in medicine and even in beauty treatments, while some varieties have antiseptic and anti bacterial qualities that can even help to heal wounds when applied directly to the skin.

A taste of honey

Given that it is so intensely sweet, it will come as no surprise that honey is made largely of natural sugars - fructose and glucose to be precise. In fact, gram for gram, honey is sweeter than sugar, so you need The processes involved in creating honey less of it to achieve the same level of are long and complex, but it all boils down to sweetness. the fact that honey is basically energypacked bee food, perfectly engineered by As well as the sugar, honey also contains nature to help see them through the winter some water and about two per cent is made months. up of vitamins, minerals and proteins. The journey from flower to honey pot begins when a honeybee collects the sugar-rich nectar from flowers and plants. It then returns to the hive and delivers its cargo where the worker bees take over, adding enzymes to the nectar and helping to evaporate most of the water. This stops the sugar in the honey from fermenting and helps to make it thick and sticky so that it can be stored in the honeycomb cells to be used as food for the hive.

However strained, heat-treated honey may lose some of its nutritional value, so it’s always best to buy honey that is as natural as possible. Many varieties of honey come from a variety of different plants and although different geological areas may produce distinctive flavours, the most sought after types of honey come from single varieties of plant such as heather, cherry blossom or thyme.

Buzzing with health?

Egyptians and Romans all using honey for medicinal as well as culinary purposes. At a basic level it is packed with energy while its smooth, sticky texture helps it soothe sore throats and tickly coughs. But many people consider that honey’s chemical make-up gives it unique healing properties The chemical compositions of antioxidants and vitamins will vary widely between varieties of honey, however most types of honey have some degree of antiseptic benefits and some types, such as Manuka honey, can be applied directly to wounds to help ward off infection and promote healing. Honey also contains good levels of antioxidants that help to repair cell damage and boost the immune system. Perhaps surprisingly, hay fever sufferers may be able to desensitise themselves to the pollen in the area where they live by eating one or two spoonfuls of local honey in the weeks leading up to the hay fever season. It is thought that

this will help the body to build up immunity to the local pollen; however it won’t work if you travel farther afield, so you will still need to take your usual preventative measures to avoid the worst of the symptoms. The Manuka factor With its own distinctive flavour and aroma, Manuka honey is a true superfood and comes from bees that have gathered their nectar from New Zealand’s native Manuka bush. This remarkable variety of honey contains higher than usual levels of antibacterial compounds, as well as having powerful antiseptic qualities. This makes it a much sought-after natural remedy which has been used to treat everything from cuts and grazes to skin infections, pressure sores and even some ‘superbug’ infections. Manuka honey comes in different grades, known as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF), depending on the strength of its antibacterial compounds. To make the most of Manuka’s antibacterial properties try to buy Manuka honey with a UMF rating of at least 10. Mojacar Magazine February to March 2009

Cabrera Open Garden Day Eight houses in Cabrera recently opened their gardens to the public for an annual charity event, where the proceeds from the ticket sales go to a chosen charity. This years recipients, MACS (Mojacar Area Cancer Support Group), will be happy to know that over three hundred tickets were sold. Braving the windy conditions, a steady stream of people flowed from one house to the next. Strolling through these beautifully landscaped gardens (occasionally looking over my shoulder, to see if Monty Don was filming behind me), I enjoyed every inch of these gardens with their incredible array of plants, shrubs, ground covers and trees and the different colours, aromas and textures, this felt like being in green heaven.

My first three weeks I stayed in a he came here, together with his young brother Benjamin, and was the hotel in Ronda, when my team leader discovered this, he rented me first English child ever to enrol in Los Gallardos School. Quite a change, a room in a house along with some other workers. as he remembers from the private school in Gloucester he attended University? Well I took a gap year and then I was just too busy to previously! even consider going!” “I probably did have a rough start in Spain” he admits, “as I spoke absolutely no Spanish, and the only English speaker in the school was the English teacher and he wasn’t too keen on me as his English wasn’t as good as mine! Still, once I picked up the basics it was a fantastic childhood, and I remember college (in Vera) fondly. In those days you could drive at 17 on a UK license, and as you can imagine I made the most of that!”

A year later he started his own Internet company along with his exboss, and specialised in building dynamic Internet applications for the real estate industry and, later online bookings. At it’s peak Sane Systems had over 30 employees, and when he sold out to his business part in early 2005 had offices in Puerto Banus, Malaga and Dublin. “I did intend then to go into UK politics, but shortly before the hustings I got badly stung by a jellyfish off the coast of Thailand. I was laid up in Gloucester for a couple of months and that put a stop to my early career in politics! So I came back to Almeria and joined my parent’s back in Los Gallardos. Probably a good thing, I think anybody who’s read my blog over at www.davidjackon.info knows I’m a bit to blunt for politics!” As a busy person, he has fingers in a few pies, as well as running the day to day operations of the family business. So David any other plans for the future? “Well, I’m currently involved in an exciting new venture. We’re looking to invest in local, mainly expat businesses which are struggling to cope in the current economic climates. We want to find decent, hardworking people with ideas – bars, restaurants, shops whatever – and put in place the organisation and purchasing structures they need to make a success. For example a family run restaurant, in the current environment, has a lot of extra costs that can make the difference between make or break for them. In exchange for small equity swap, we can give them access to our own accounting, legal and gestoria services; analyse and improve their business structure; identify and slash costs and give them access to cheaper products by amalgamating our purchasing structures. Think of it as a franchise, but with no rebranding!

A Mojacar Timeline by Ric Polansky Ric Polansky if told has to be one of the founding members of the area, here he kindly shares with us his own history and that of Mojacar a bit tongue in cheek albeit!... 1961 - Charlton Heston and Sofia Loren star in "El Cid" a story about the legendary conqueror Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar who helped re-capture Spain from "foreign invasion". Film locations that were used were up and down the Spanish coast including Valencia and neighbouring Granada. Movies are now on the map in Spain. Early 1962 - Part of 7 Oscar winning film "Lawrence of Arabia" is filmed in the Carboneras riverbed, Almeria Spain. Almeria is on the map. Enrique Arias, Columbian concert pianist falls in love with mojacar and convinces the mayor to give away free homes to those that come to Mojacar and renovate houses in the derelict (sp) village 1964 - Paul Polansky arrives and starts selling homes to ambassadors, etc that are leaving the village because of the "fleas". Amongst some of his first clients are:Maurice Prior of Truman's Breweries, Sir Alec Spearman, Sir & Lady Cotter, as well as three different ambassadors from various countries.

1967 - Royalty and celebrities now start to visit Mojacar and its pristine beaches and perfect weather. The Clarkson's complete Cueva del Lobo and marry into concert pianist Enrique Arias' family. 1968 - Joby Polansky is born. Later on, in September 1969, Ric Polansky, Karen, and one year old son, Joby, arrive in Francisco Franco's dictator ruled Spain, with $5.00 in hand, and lots of dreams. Mid 1970 - Franco loaned part of his war machine, some hundred or so of his tanks, jeeps, and military equipment; for the filming of the movie "Patton"; of which half the movie's budget went to pay for. The scene where Patton defeats Rommel is filmed in the Carboneras riverbed the exact same location where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed back in 1962.

December 1970 - The "La Gaviota" bar / Restaurant opens with it's stunning presence. A white monolith (which is no longer there) drew you to the building which had gleaming white marble steps leading up to it. Even though it has the name "seagull", it was originally opened up as a Cowboy Restaurant / bar by two Australian girls with food being served in each jail cell! The idea was a complete flop at the time, and no one came to the bar because it was still the Franco era and everybody in Mojacar or the surrounding area had at least one relative in jail! 1964 - Sergio Leone films 1972 - The movie "Diab贸lica "Per un pugno di dollari" malicia" (1972) aka "Night (1964) aka "A Fistful of Hair Child" with Hardy Kruger Dollars", "Per qualche dollaro and Britt Ekland is filmed at in pi霉" (1965) aka "For a Few Polansky's house. Movie memorabilia can still be seen at the El Dorado bar there. 1974 - Cortijo Grande is started. The single lane dirt track was the first glimpse of an amazing estate, which leads itself into a sacred valley or orange blossom and peaches warmed by the sun. Ric and Paul Polansky develop the area's very first 18 hole golf course there, "Golf Club", and numerous apartments and villas, nestled in the hands of the Sierra Cabrera mountain range. A riding club, bar and restaurant, a professional skeet shooting range were also established bringing in the Spanish National Shooting Team for practice and competitions. Ric had little interest in Golf at the time but gets his autograph anyway. Once at home, he signs up a deal to sell the first house on Indalo Mountain I, a huge housing development on Mojacar Beach, to an Englishman. 1969 - 1978 - Las Marinas project completed for the four ambassadors and friends, French Belgian and some fifteen additional houses in Lomos del Cantal. 1979 - Spain's first taste of a property recession gave the Polansky family a taste of how to survive future ones. For those who invested during this time frame the rewards were gratifying to the extreme!

Almerimar Today (www.almerimartoday.com) friendly Friday golf competitions By: John Woodhead My wife, Jacqui Mays, and I moved out to Almerimar over 4 years ago. Almerimar is a small town with a marina and a golf course. It is a 40 minute drive west of Almeria. The main reasons we came to Spain were the weather and being able to play golf all year round.

In the winter we get around 35-40 golfers taking part. In the summer the numbers dwindle to 12-16 golfers. We normally play 4-ball team competitions such as Yellow Ball, Best 2 from 4, Waltz, Texas Scramble etc. Everyone pays their own green fee and then pays an entry fee of 5 euros. Everyone wins a bottle and the last place team wins chocolates (and gets laughed at). In the summer we have post golfing drinks at the chiringuito at the course. In the winter we adjourn to a local bar. More recently we have started to organise occasional special Friday competitions with help from our friends Alan and Sharon Sly from Alcor Properties. These occur every 6-8 weeks and we all go out for a meal together in the evening afterwards.

In October 2008 there was a Men vs. Women Ryder Cup style competition (won by the women). We organised a Christmas When we arrived we hooked up with a crowd of really friendly competition (see the picture of the winners including Jacqui on the golfers. We were then asked to take over running the regular Friday left). We are currently planning an England vs. Rest of Europe competition for the end of January 2009. golf competitions here over two years ago. Cookery Holidays in the Beautiful Spanish Countryside One of Simply Mojacar's regular readers and forum members has bitten the bullet and decided to set up his very own Cookery Business in Spain. As you know Sharon is a whiz in the Kitchen and this may well be her ultimate holiday. Take a gander!

We are a family run ,business and have moved to Spain after working in catering trade for many years including owning our own restaurant which we sold in order set up our place in Spain which we purchased in late 2007 after searching for 3 years to find the "right property" in the right location. I myself am a city & guilds qualified chef having worked in guide recommended restaurants for many years before taking over a pizza delivery business that was at the time only taking ÂŁ25 k a year. Within 3 years we had two new premises with a restaurant specialising in Mediterranean cuisine ,plus a takeaway and delivery service , despite only opening 6 nights a week. The problem with that was because of the demand we found ourselves working 12-16 hour days which although we were working together myself,my wife ,daughter and son it left very little time for normal family life. So in late 2003 we decided its time for a change of direction,so after taking a well earned rest we headed for Spain where we bought a park home with the intention of just finding some part-time work and enjoy the sun. However fate played its hand in so much as

my son who is disabled got worse so we decided to move back to the UK where we could at least speak the medics and could get the help we needed. This done we spent long holidays in Spain and decided to look for something to do where we could again work together and at the same time have more of a family life.Work in Spain was not a problem as I was head hunted by an old acquaintance to work at his restaurant in the resort town of Mojacar which is only 5 km from where we had our park home, but to be honest I did not want to get back on the treadmill of working in a busy restaurant so we were racking our brains of what to do to achieve our goals.

Breaks would be an ideal solution!!!!! The search was on to find somewhere suitable in an idyllic setting. Three years later we found what we feel is the place in the Spanish mountains at the Rambla De Oria a area that is not overrun by expats and has a nice mix of Spanish and other nationalities. Just a little about the cojito its about 250 years old and was refurbished 4 years ago by the previous owners ,however since we have had it we have spent over 10000 euro completely rewiring it tiling the pool which was a paited hole type and redecorating due to the old cojito problem of flaking paint ,this is a job I can see us doing every year part of the price you pay for wanting a property with character with original beams and a wonderful open fire in the lounge. We also installed a projector in a raised area just off the lounge so we can watch TV or films on a 120" screen. I also intend to try to record some DVD's demonstrating the dishes covered on the courses and supply not books a apron with our web address and a recipe book.

Freetime Revuelto Con Setas Recipe

Red Peppers Salad Recipe

For 3-4 people as a starter 8 eggs 4 soup spoons milk 60g butter 200g wild mushrooms Lemon juice Salt and pepper

For 4 to 6 people

Revuelto is a scrambled egg type dish which is served all over the country as a starter.

3 tablespoons of wine vinegar 6 tablespoons of olive oil salt black pepper

Here we have cooked it with wild mushrooms but you could as easily cook it with standard mushrooms or with prawns. When cooking it you can either cook it in a baño maria ie. put the egg mixture in a bowl and put the bowl in a pan of boiling water or simply cook it in a normal pan. Which ever way make sure you stir it continuously to stop it from sticking to the sides.

Preparation: Cut off any part of the wild mushrooms that you don’t want to use and throw these parts away. Wash the mushrooms, cut them into thin slices and dry these slices in some kitchen roll. Melt 20g of butter in a frying pan, add the mushrooms, a few drops of lemon juice, some salt and cook them slowly for about 5 or 6 minutes. Break the eggs into a bowl and beat with a fork for 30 seconds. Drain any juice off the cooked mushrooms and add them to the eggs. Add a little salt and pepper, 4 soup spoons of cold milk, 40g butter and stir this mixture. At this stage you have a choice. You can either pour the mixture into a pan and cook on a gentle heat stirring continuously until it is cooked. Or you can put the bowl into a pan of boiling water, making sure that no water gets into the bowl, and cook the eggs. Stir the mixture well especially round the sides of the bowl as this part will cook fastest. Once cooked serve with some crusty bread.

COOKING WITH SHARON

4 red peppers 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped For the dressing

This is a very simple but tasty salad dish that goes well with barbecues or can be eaten as a tapa. It is easy to prepare and doesn't have many ingredients but must be done in advance as you have to roast the peppers before peeling them. Preparation: Either preheat the grill or the oven to 220C/425F (gas mark 7). Put the whole peppers in the hot oven or under the grill and roast or grill them for about 30 minutes until they are well charred. They should be turned over from time to time as they get charred. Remove the peppers from the oven or grill, cover with a clean tea towel and leave them to cool. Covering with the tea towel is to make them easier to peel which you do once they are cool. Remove the core and the seeds, cut the flesh into long thin strips and mix with the garlic. Mix the dressing ingredients together and pour over the peppers and garlic. Allow this to sit in the fridge for at least a couple of hours to absorb the flavours. stock and the white wine and bring to the boil stirring continuously. Cover and reduce the heat, and let this simmer as you prepare the stuffing. To make stuffing Heat the oil, add the onion and garlic and fry on a high heat for a minute. Keep the heat high and add the mince stirring all the time as it gets brown. Cook this for about 10 minutes then stir in the rice and parsley. Add some salt and pepper and stir for another 5 minutes. Place the red peppers upright in a baking dish and fill them with the stuffing. Pour the sauce around the peppers and bake in a pre-heated oven at 190ºC/375ºF/gas mark 5 for approximately 40 minutes.

Preparation: Lightly brush each foil square with olive oil to prevent the fish sticking to it and place a piece of fish on each square. Mix together the green pepper, onion, garlic and tomato and divide them equally to cover the fish. On top of each pile of vegetables place ½ a bay leaf, add 2 tablespoons of white wine and some lemon juice. Season well with salt and pepper then fold the edges of the foil together to make four slightly baggy parcels.

Freetime Brazo de Gitano "Gypseys Arms" For 3-4 people 5 eggs, separated 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup flour 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 tablespoons sifted confectioners' sugar 1 cup heavy cream, whipped 1 1/4 teaspoons rum extract 1 tablespoon superfine sugar (Put desired amount of granulated sugar in a blender and blend at high speed for about 30 seconds) Preparation: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F .Beat egg yolks and 1/4 cup sugar until thick and smooth. Stir in flour, cocoa and vanilla extract. Blend well. Whip egg whites until stiff, but not dry. Fold into yolk and flour mixture. Butter a 15 x 8-inch baking pan. Line with baking parchment paper or wax paper. Butter well again, and dust lightly with 2 tablespoons of the confectioners' sugar. Pour batter into the pan and spread out evenly. Bake for 15 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes, then turn onto a cloth to cool. After 10 minutes peel paper off. Combine whipped cream, rum and sugar. Adjust to taste. Spread over cake and roll cake like a jellyroll, starting with the long edge. Sprinkle with remaining confectioners' sugar. Serve in slices. This recipe can be adapted with many different ingredients, let your imagination go wild!

Put the parcels on to a baking tray and cook them in a preheated oven, 190C/375F or gas mark 5 for about 30 minutes. You could check one parcel after 20 or 25 minutes. You will know the fish is cooked when the flesh is opaque and flakes easily. Serve with boiled potatoes and the vegetables of your choice.

Freetime Twilight has created a lot of excitement among the movie-going community, as the film is based on a series of incredibly successful novels – just like the blockbuster Harry Potter franchise. The (relatively) small studio which optioned the script has struck a gold mine. The film grossed $70.6 million (US) at the box office in its debut

Films & Books The Gift is the latest novel from Cecelia Ahurn and I do believe one of her best. I have read all of Ahurns works to date but felt that P.S I Love You, her first novel, was always the best. However since reading this latest edition to her collection have quickly changed my mind. It looks just like a little Christmas present as it comes with a detachable red ribbon and the front and back

weekend, drawing more attendees than Interview with a Vampire's debut to claim the biggest vampire weekend on covers of the book are printed just like silver Christmas wrapping paper. Just looking at the book makes you want to buy record. And it cost an absolute pittance to produce. it!!! Twilight tells the story of Bella, a mopey teen who relocates to rainy Forks, Washington to live with her gruff yet lovable father. The story is of a hardworking businessman called Lou and his At her new school she comes across the Cullen family - a brood everyday struggle to get to one meeting in time for the next. He of pale-faced hotties who skulk around the corridors and make was such a hard worker and wanted people to see him as everyone feel generally uncomfortable. And rightly so. It turns someone fit for promotion! He worked so hard at work that it out the family is a kiss of vampires, and this becomes appears his family life was suffering. He never has time for his problematic when Bella and the devastatingly pasty Edward wife Ruth and their two children because he is always far too busy being in meetings or having affairs with different Cullen fall deliriously in love. secretaries! Lou just really needs more time. And this love story is the crux of Twilight’s appeal to a generation of young ladies (for proof, check out this Twilight A good deed from Lou one morning sees him giving a job to a haiku competition). The film centres on a forbidden love that homeless guy sitting out front of his office building. For some spans centuries. It’s about the girl who wins the seemingly reason he thinks that this chap would do well to work in a unobtainable high school heart-throb. There’s a splash of magic. company like his and offers him a job that very same day. As The male lead is a smouldering 17-year-old on the outside and a Gabe, the homeless guy, settles into life working in the building worldly gentleman on the inside. There's no doubt about it, that just like a duck takes to water, things start to unsettle Lou author Stephenie Meyer is a clever cookie indeed. She knew somewhat with Gabe's manner. Is it just Lou or does Gabe seem to literally be in two places at the same time? How is exactly which buttons to push with her young female audience. Gabe getting all these things done in super quick time? While the film is clunky in parts (and often there are gaping holes which are left unexplained), it has a strange appeal. It’s As the story reveals itself bit by bit it makes the book a real gem quick, gripping and oddly mesmerising. It also boasts a to read. I found it hard to put it down as I was just dying to find sufficiently angsty soundtrack (including Muse, Paramour, out what was to happen next! I really was sucked right into the pages of this book and found both the storyline and the Collective Soul) which will appeal to the demographic. characters within believable and enjoyable. We get a real sense Kristen Stewart does a fine job in the role of Bella (though her of what each character is about and are able to feel connected interview skills could do with a little work), but it’s Robert to each one in a different way. We feel the disappointment that Pattinson who really shines as tousle-haired Edward. Admittedly comes from Lou's wife with dealing with the day to day let there are a few moments where he goes a bit over the top downs from her husband. We feel the desire for business (there’s an “emotional” scene in the woods where he hams it up success coming from Lou and all of these emotions are a bit too much and I wanted to curl up under my chair to portrayed so well we feel as if we actually know these people. escape), but otherwise he’s quite captivating. The lad certainly Ahurn has certainly done herself proud with this book and the has some screen presence. way she has executed the story brilliantly right up till the end Twilight isn’t breaking any cinematic ground. No one is going to was a stroke of genius. I would certainly say this is her best win an Oscar for their performance and countless adults are book since P.S I Love You and it may even top that one! I would going to grimace through the experience. But it will get many a recommend this book to literally anyone as I found it such a joy young heart a-fluttering. And there’s always room at the movies to read. Lovers of Chick Lit will love it, especially Cecelia Ahurns fans will love it and anyone with a little bit of heart and for that. imagination will adore it! Page 34

Los Arcos Mojacar Playa

RESTAURANT REVIEW The menu and has a great variation of food ranging from steak to traditional Spanish food such as tapas and paella. Last time I visited I chose the menu of the day which is very popular during the week. My choice was fish soup, calamari and creme cataline. This includes a soft drink and coffee.

The place was full but no one rushes you and you can sit on the terrace and enjoy the wonderful views and make an Fortunately Mojacar is blessed with an array of afternoon of it! restaurants who's diversity never ceases to amaze I would thoroughly recommend the tapas as there is a great me. choice to be had!

From the Commercial Parque to the Hotel Indalo there are probably over 50 restaurants that offer every kind of food imaginable . This is a no frills, no fuss restaurant, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Well nestled in between these two venues can be found a small beach restaurant called Los Arcos. Go on, stop next time you see it as you drive down the playa, you really will be pleasantly surprised!

Los Arcos can be found almost opposite the offices of Ric Polansky and next door but one to the riding stables. It is a small beach restaurant offering a great choice of menu and possibly some of the best beach views of Mojacar.

Thank god it’s over! We can all take a deep sigh of relief safe in the knowledge that Christmas is all over and done with for another 11 months. No need to see those irritating relations that insist on turning up at your house eating all of your food, supping your favourite wine and gleefully opening the decent presents you have got them whilst handing over some poundland rubbish they have bought you. No more hoards descending like Atilla the Hun upon your hard pushed patience with their demon like offspring that destroy any semblance of a home that you had. No friends breathe deeply and book the next festive season away from all those you don’t want or need to see. Leave the kids at their grandparents with their gifts and fob the dog off on anyone who will have it after all its the season of good will. The decorations can stay in the loft saving you a dusty trip through a year’s worth spiders webs and unused keepsakes that increase in size each time you stick your head in there and the tree can remain uncollected. The doors can stay locked and the dread of the relations can be a distant memory.

It rides well with plenty of bottom end grunt taking you through the gears nicely and has a good top speed. I had a very happy couple of hours cruising around the countryside taking in the feel of it and it really did get some good looks from those I passed. I had visions of taking in mile after mile of back European roads enjoying the views. I could really see myself on a good old fashioned road trip with a couple of good friends taking in new cultures and places with the bike always giving me a way to break the ice where ever I stopped. I’ve done road trips on a sports bike but you always end up in the shape of the bloody thing with back ache that will last for days. The Speedmaster on the other hand has a superb riding position that leaves you in fit state to be able to walk for the rest of the day. Its comfy enough for hours and days of riding with enough power to keep you grinning.

The price is quite reasonable at £6299 on the road so it won’t be breaking the bank by any stretch of the imagination. So if you are a biker or having a midlife crisis and want to relive some of your Leave behind the commercialism and pressure of it all and youth without being told by your body that it has long since take a long comfortable ride to your holiday destination on a past this really is worth a go. So later in the spring whilst I am still on sports bike as my wife won’t let me have one I Triumph Speedmaster. will be looking out for you somewhere in Europe. Now this, for a change, is not trying to be a Harley. Yes it looks fantastic and yes its only got an 865cc parallel twin 270* crank engine but it is a real flashback to the 60’s hod rod styling. Interesting Stuff you may not know! 7 Fantastic Uses for Lemon Juice You Probably Never Thought Of!

5. Disinfect Your Kitchen Cutting Board

You diced up some onion, and then some poultry for tonight's dinner on your cutting board. Once you were done, you washed it in hot, sudsy water, but is your cutting board really clean? If you spray it lightly with pure lemon juice, then rinse it well. Allow the cutting board to dry thoroughly before you put it Using fresh lemon juice is actually better than bottled, but away, the bacteria- as well as the onion odors- should be gone. both types have many helpful uses around your home!

6. Remove Sticky Pine Tar From Your Hands Ah! Lemon juice. I like to put it in my iced tea, squeeze it on my salads and sprinkle it on fried fish to help cut the grease. Lemon juice actually has many uses besides being a tasty food and drink additive that you may not know about. Here are 10 fantastic uses for lemon juice you probably never thought of!

A friend of mine was making decorative wreaths by using fresh pine boughs. The work was fun, but she complained about the pine tar mess that was left on her hands. suggested that she scrub her hands with a mixture of lemon juice and table salt. Voila! The pine tar came right off!

7. Silence a Hacking Cough and Heal a Sore Throat

This fantastic use for lemon juice will quiet a hacking cough You probably know that spritzing lemon juice on your hair, and soothe a raw throat. Simply mix up two teaspoons of then going outside in the sunshine will give you natural- lemon juice and a half teaspoon of honey together. Swallow the tasty mixture and you should feel better soon. Repeat the looking highlights. But, did you know that rinsing your hair process, if need be, in thirty minutes. with lemon juice will make it shiny too? You probably never thought of this! The acidic juice will take out the built-up residue from shampoo and hair care products. To give your hair a healthy shine, mix up a quarter cup of lemon juice in a cup of water.

1. Give Your Hair a Beautiful Shine

2. Remove Tarnish From Copper and Brass Mix up a quarter cup of table salt and just enough lemon juice to make a paste. Then, apply a coating of this onto any tarnished copper or brass pots, pans and other items you may have. Leave the lemon juice/salt paste set for five to ten minutes. Next, wash the item in warm tap water and then rinse it well. Use a soft, clean cloth to buff it dry. If any tarnish remains, repeat the process again.

3. Use Lemon Juice to Get You Going Anytime someone in your household gets constipated, you may reach for a store-bought laxative. But did you know that lemon juice is a natural laxative that has no side effects? You probably never thought of this! Just pour two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice into an eight-ounce glass of warm water. Drink it in the morning when you first get up. The citrus juice will help regulate your digestive system. In one of his earlier books, fitness guru Richard Simmons recommended doing this as a way to lose weight!

4. Clean Up Household Grease Naturally Mix up a tough solution of lemon juice and tap water, and your stove, countertops and appliances will be shining like new. It's fantastic! Pour a quarter of a cup of lemon juice in a spray bottle, then fill it up with tap water. Shake it a few times to mix the solution, then use it to remove stubborn grease.

Out and About With The Oasis's in Andalucía and Murcia.

but seem fairly solid. There also some a few fishing or viewing platforms. My mate "BD Graham" (See photo of Graham exploring) and I saw trout weighing up to 2.1/2lbs so claims of "Baza Barry", a regular fisherman in the area, catching them to 4lbs is easily believable.

This is not about the fishing (Much). Although Almeria is a designated desert there are oasis's we Quickly I will mention the fishing which is on a day ticket of €16 can get quickly and easily to. One is the River Guadalentin which from 8am until 8pm but you can take up to eight trout a day so runs close to the village of Pozo Alcon, reclining beneath the that's not bad. Sierras de Cazorla mountains. Although it's in the region of Jaen it takes only just over two hours to drive from Mojacar. It can best Just a little further along the road to Huescar you will find the be found by going North past the Embalse de Negratin, known Embalse de Bolero, a dam like Negratin but looks much by expat fishermen as Baza lake. Over the dam wall and keep smaller. See photo. Take some bread with you and feed Carp going following signs to Pozo Alcon. (A315) Drive into the town to 10lbs from the top of the dam wall.

to a roundabout and take the first exit signposted Huescar. (A326) Just a few miles along this road you will see a sign on the right saying "Coto Pesca Intensivo" (I think I have that right) which means you can fish 7 days a week.

If you have the time, drive up the mountains to Cazorla and Quesada. It is fantastic as these villages/towns are up above the snowline and many of the houses would look more at home in the Swiss Alps.

The dirt track takes you down to the River Guadalentin and it doesn't matter if you are interested in fishing or not, the trout you should see (See photo) are something else. Also bird life is abundant and viewing it all is made easier by paths along both sides of the river and a few rickety bridges that will worry you

If you fancy a similar experience in Murcia then there is the Embalse de Cenajo and the River Segura which pours out of it. The first 8 km is also a pay trout river but with fewer days and hours fishing allowed. See photo of me and a barbel caught from the river. Again there are paths which make a wonderful walk more possible and you can also drive along much of the river. Where the river comes out of the embalse there is a hotel called the "Hotel Cenajo" (surprisingly!) and at various quiet times they offer special deals. One being free accommodation if you buy breakfast and dinner, this adds up to €30 a night I think and I have found it to be good value. You can find details of offers on their website http://www.hotelcenajo.com and the hotel, river and embalse can be found by taking the first exit after the Lorca tunnel to Calasparra. You will see signs for the hotel just outside the town although details of exactly where and how to get there can also be found on their website.
