Almerimar throughout the year By: John Woodhead, www.almerimartoday.com This is the first of two articles about how our town of Almerimar in the province of Almeria changes throughout the year. This article covers summer and autumn. The next article will cover winter and spring. Summer in Almerimar Summer is when a lot of the businesses here hope to make the bulk of their money. Mid-July to the end of August is the liveliest time. With UK school holidays combined with the Spanish approach of using August as a month for holidays boosting the numbers that visit Almerimar. Almerimar is very busy with lots of bars and restaurants staying open late. If you are staying in the marina area you will probably have to stay up late as there is lots of music and general background noise. If you prefer a quieter time you could perhaps stay in a place 10-15 minutes walk from the marina (like where we live). That way you can take advantage of ´the buzz´ but still have the occasional early night if you like that sort of thing.

euros for the rest of the year. A great thing for us is that the course is quite empty in the summer so we can play when we like and not be held up on the course. Autumn in Almerimar

Come September life in Almerimar gets a little quieter. During the summer months the local council organise lots of There are not so many tourists around and everyone seems events to keep people entertained. These typically include a a little more relaxed. medieval market, organised sports events, kids shows with magicians, clowns and face painting etc. plus free music The marina fills up with boats where people plan to stay here events in the town and at the castle at Guardias Viejas for the winter. Until recently Almerimar was viewed as one of (about 10-15 minutes drive from Almerimar). Some of these the cheapest places to birth a boat over the winter so the events are quite small and informal but some, like the 2 day marina was full of boats. However, we have been told that prices have risen quite a bit recently so we may not see this Bolero festival last year, are quite large events. influx of people this year. June 23rd is the festival of San Juan and we have great fun with barbecues and bonfires on the beach plus people jumping into the sea at midnight. Another fun day is the festival of the Virgen del Carmen which takes place in July. A statue is paraded around the marina and taken out to sea.

Many of the properties in Almerimar are owned by people who spend the summer months in Northern Europe and part of the autumn, winter and spring in Almerimar. Many of these are golfers who have retired and want to take advantage of the great climate that Almeria can offer. So autumn is the time when we meet up with friends we have not seen for a while. About Almerimar If you want to know more about Almerimar why not take a look at www.almerimartoday.com.

From June to September is the low season on the golf course. The ´walk on´ price of a green fee drops to around 46 euros compared to the high season price of around 67

A special place: The salas of Cuevas del Almanzora Almeria Art, and Portrait Artist at Hotel Valle del Este, Vera in Spain Did you know that one of the most active art centres in the eastern Almería region is in the small town of Cuevas del Almanzora, just a short drive from Mojácar? Here, you will find a constantly changing display of artistic works by local and regional artists as well as some more permanent exhibitions. It is well worth the 20 or so minute drive from Mojácar because Cuevas itself is also a bit of a jewel hidden in the dust-bowl of the 'territorio Argánios' - an area that in ancient times was a centre of wealth from the mouth of the old Almanzora river at nearby Villaricos for a 100 or more miles inland to places like Baza and beyond.

all is peace and tranquillity. The occasional person crosses the large square between the outer gates and the inner buildings (past the more modern amphitheatre which has hosted many a spectacular event) but, in general, you can have the place to yourself to enjoy at your leisure (and at no cost).

[3 - 30th June'09: "A glimpse of Spain", an exhibition of paintings by myself and fellow local artist, Marlyn Anderson at the Castillo de Cuevas.]

It grew in importance thanks to the extraction of minerals and metals like copper and silver from the numerous mines in the area and, after many years of decline, is now undergoing a revival, growing from around 1,800 inhabitants barely ten years ago to its current level of around 13,000 people (including 2,700 'extanjeros'). This growth has been helped by the obvious care, management and marketing of the town which is most noticeable in the attention it pays to the arts the Town Hall being clearly aware of how this can help to bring tourists (both national and international) to the area, and so further fund the town's renaissance. Of particular note is the castillo (or castle) at the top of the western end of the town along with its associated museums and cultural 'salas'. It originated as a fortress palace in the 16th century and includes the Torre del Homenaje (keep), the Marquis Palace, and the Casa de la Tercia. The Marquis Palace is a two-storey mansion built as a symbol of the military might of the Marquis of Vélez and at present is the Museum of Contemporary Painting and Sculpture. The Tercia, built in 1773 as a granary, now houses the Cuevas Archaeology Museum on the ground floor and the Archive and Municipal Library above. On market days (Tuesdays and Thursdays) the Plaza de la Libertad outside the castle gates buzzes with the activities of a vibrant market town. But inside,

SPAIN – FINANCIAL TROUBLE SHOOTING in 2009

by Mark Mountney

Spain is not the UK, and that applies to most elements of So here are the areas to look at with the view to life, whether it is financial or otherwise! reducing costs and/or increasing income! A rather obvious statement you might say, but then you may be surprised at how many folk make assumptions and act without 1) Existing Mortgages – Payments high or hurting? any research into the mechanisms of financial life here, and then All Spanish mortgages work on a periodic rate review basis, and wonder why things go pear-shaped. those borrowers who have found themselves in the unfortunate Whether your involvement in Spain is comprehensive (you have position of having a high rate at the last review are probably moved here as a permanent resident) or partial (perhaps owning hurting and wondering what they can do to reduce the monthly a holiday or investment home), we have seen developments over cost. For those who receive their income in Sterling £ this has the last year or so that would have likely impacted your wallet been exacerbated by the demise of the Sterling against the Euro. hard! But what to do to ease the pain, if that is possible? Whilst not all things are, or can ever be, under your control, certain elements to your financial make up are, and it is these key elements that we need to focus on. Any improvement can remove or, at least, ease the position you are in and, not least, the anguish and stress that invariably come with financial pressures! There’s an old saying that says ‘sometimes you cannot see the wood for the trees’. Translated into financial terms today it can be interpreted as the stress of dealing with everyday worries needs to be stepped back from. You can do but you certainly need to think differently than perhaps you have ever done before. Or get someone to help you!

Firstly, the good news! Come the next review date, with bank lending rates having fallen in recent months, you should see a much lower payment. At least, the majority will! It’s a question of what to do until then. The bad news though, is that the cost of going into arrears is punitive and the consequence not positive. The lender may not pass the full benefit of reduced rates on if this were so due to the penalty clauses within the mortgage contract. Understand though that lenders here are under a great deal of pressure viz the number of mortgages in arrears and repossessions. They will not want more and that fact, ironic as it may seem, is your strength. They will not want more! So, if you are finding it hard to maintain mortgage payments, talk to the lender (this is critical) with the view of achieving i) a ‘window’ of reduced payments (to the next review date preferably), and ii) a switch to ‘Interest Only’ (thus delaying capital repayments). It may even apply that iii) extending the term of the mortgage may help but be aware that this could involve legal costs in changing the contractual terms. Also iv) if the basis of the interest calculation is using the IRPH index this is not good news for the foreseeable future as the rate reductions we have seen will not be passed on quickly enough to you. Look to switch to the Euribor index where rate reductions have washed through already. 2) Bank Assurances Be mindful that banks in Spain have, historically, made certain protection policies mandatory alongside mortgage provision. This cannot be enforced any longer and therefore it may offer a saving to fing an open market equivalent if the policy is required, either by you or the bank. You need to be aware of what it is you are actually paying for and whether this is truly needed. For example, you may have alternative Life Assurance in place which is sufficient for your own protection purposes, so an extra policy may be superfluous. Alternatively, Buildings Insurance will be required by the lender but the probability is that you get it cheaper! The bank will still require their name added as a beneficiary, of course! But the savings to elect for an alternative policy could be a sizeable chunk … annually! 3) Savings gone – Eaten away due to reduced income? There are many reasons why a mortgage should always, always be taken when buying a property and this crisis has driven that

A Quick Guide

To Wine Learning the way on how to taste wines is quite a straightforward lesson that will deepen your overall appreciation for both the wine and for the wine maker themselves. Look, smell and taste are the connecting resources with your basic senses that will distinguish between a good wine and a very bad wine, in no time at all you will be able to taste wines like the pros do in no time at all! How difficult is it? Well the answer to this question is it isn’t, it will take you around fifteen minutes to get down to the basics.

Reds will often have berry, woody and or a bell pepper taste. White wines will often have apple, floral or citrus flavours associated with them. 7. Initial Taste - This is your first impression of the wine’s components and flavours. 8. Finish - The wine’s finish is how long the flavour lasts after it is swallowed. Did the wines taste last several seconds? Was it lightbodied (like water) or full-bodied (like the consistency of milk)? 9. After you have taken the time to taste your wine, you might record some of your impressions. Did you like the wine overall? Does it taste better with cheese, bread or a heavy meal? Will you buy it again? If so, jot the wine’s name, producer and year down for future reference.

1. LOOK. Pour a glass of wine into a suitable wine glass. Then hold the glass up to the light. What colour is it? Look beyond red, white or blush. If it’s a red wine is the colour maroon, purple, ruby, garnet, red or even brownish. If it’s a white wine is it clear, straw-like, golden, light green, pale yellow or Things To Remember brown in appearance? 1. Don’t overfill your glass. There is a reason 2. Still Looking. The British nation is a people who have been on the move since even further back than when Henry VIII was on the throne. Back then, the royal court took to the road multiple times a year to take occupancy of the various royal residences around the country. Furthermore, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it was a custom for visits to displaced friends and family, as well as the annual fashionable visits to ‘town’ (London, that is) and to Bath, to span over a period of weeks, even months. Meaning that a significant majority of one’s possessions would have to be transported either with the travelling party, or having been sent on ahead in anticipation of arrival. Luggage, in those times, despite not yet being graced with that name, came almost entirely in the form of the trunk. Indeed, how many times in a BBC period drama have you seen various trunks being loaded to and from a horse-drawn coach? I rest my case. (Pun half intended.) The word ‘luggage’, by the way, arose in the realm of boat travel, through the act of ‘lugging’ baggage to the ship’s hold as undertaken by servants of the wealthy. Like eighteenth and nineteenth-

Page 14

century travel, the sheer length of the journey meant that the amount of luggage taken on such voyages was large, to say the least. Stackable luggage was a useful concept in instances like these, with varying sizes of the same case being produced in order that they might be loaded one on top of the other to save space. The sheer weight of all the baggage, then, would have been staggering, with the cases being made of the highest quality of heavy duty, reinforced leather. Luggage, however, has since evolved into a more lightweight affair with the advent of air travel, with strict baggage restrictions having to be enforced to ensure fuel consumption is maintained at a manageable level.

and a retractable handle there to bring them into the twenty-first century. The result of such little change is a range of the most refined-looking traditional luggage ever to be produced in the UK.

Aspinal of London, meanwhile, have built upon their traditional selection of luggage with the inclusion of the St Tropez range, a stylish and chic series of hand-luggage bags (from £460). Whilst it retains the classic shape of their older-looking pieces such as the Grand Tourer Travel Bag (from £315), the crocodile-style leather gives it a very contemporary and stylish look that would look at home in any first-class lounge. Whilst available in three other colours, it is the purple St Tropez Throughout the last 150 years, one Cabin Bag that is exceptionally name has dominated the luggage stunning, and is guaranteed to be a market: Louis Vuitton. Serrano Ham - How's it made? Well.... Swines and Spanish Serrano ham have been and still are one of the most characteristic elements of Spain, a basic representative of Spanish culture and present, most of the times, in our dish and plates. The reason for this success may be the fact that humans make the most of this animal (the snout, the ears, the feet‌). For a long while, eating pork was considered a sign of nobility and honour and everything connected with its sacrifice and preparation was very distinguishing. There are different swine species: the white, the Iberian, or some mixed species used to obtain different products.

growing large quantities of swines (and of spanish serrano hams). The Iberians were also trading olive oil, wine and, of course, serrano ham and cold cut meat. These activities were yielding enough returns. The pig was something so valuable that during the age of Augustus and Agripa some ham-shaped Roman coins were created. Some pig images were also discovered on consular medals which were used as military sign of some legion - Celtic and Pre-romanic Gaelic ones. The pork is an essential part of the human diets. Ever since ancient times pigs have been playing an essential part in the alimentation of humans During Roman times, the pig slaughter was performed by the cook or "coquus" (who used to be a prestigious slave), but then they specialized the proces; finally, some very specialized cooks, named "vicarius supra cenas", were in charge with the slaughter. The serrano ham was the part of the pig that most valued these cooks, and it was consumed only by the high class of society. But they did not only eat serrano ham; they also consumed some other parts of the swine, cold cut meat or salted pork meat, such as loins, heads, chops and pork fat.

The Romans elaborated and produced serrano hams for ages. In many works and books they talk about the serrano ham and the ways to elaborate it - one can see they were following more or less the same stages people use today. Hams were also produced in the ancient Tarraco (Tarragona), in Conesa was The pig has always been living close to the human being ever discovered a fossilized serrano ham which was of about 2000 since the beginnings, satisfying each and every need the years. humans had. A good alternative is to ask friends who have good plants for cuttings at any time of the year. Some of the best of our collection were obtained by volunteering to prune bushes for elderly friends in exchange for cuttings. Cuttings take easily in Spain if you take 40 to 50 centimetre cuttings and bury 80 percent in the ground. The success rate will be enhanced if you slit the end of the cutting and squeeze one or two sweet corn seeds into the slit before planting. A useful tip we obtained from Spanish neighbours.

Across the world in separate continents volcanic gases are spewing out in sites as far apart as Alaska, the Philippines and the Greek islands. Sounds bad, well there are more factors to consider. Global warming is causing some glaciers in the Himalayas to retreat so quickly that if the present rate continues they may be gone by the year 2035. More than 2 billion people, a third of the world’s population, will be without portable water. Bad, well with the rising seas places like Holland won’t be, Venice will become the largest underwater city to visit and the teeming populations of Bangladesh will be living in canoes. Recent articles in the Washington Post’s science section describe in detail how the birds, bees, bats and other species that pollinate North American plant life are losing their populations and no one knows why. Scientist are in a frenzy. This study is more than noticeable crop regression— it could be dangerously close to agriculture extinction in North America. Oil prices finally under control? Not at all. While the western world is cutting back and going electric third world nations that wish to claw themselves into second world productive status are buying up entire countries: Thailand, Somalia, and the Sudan. And it’s not just oil, some countries like, Angola, Nigeria, and the Congo are selling off their entire natural resources. Last week’s TIME magazine dissected Burma into a patch work quilt of it’s natural heritage being cut up and distributed between super powers. For China to continue it’s meteoritic rise to full super power status it must fuel the antiquated double stroke engines of technologies past. consumed 79 million barrels of oil a day, but by 2005 that had gone up to 85 million barrels per day and the trend continues up and up just like smoke. Lots of economical pundits have noted years ago “in 2005, for the first time since 1933 the savings rate in America became negative”. Worse yet, consumer credit, a percentage of personal income, jumped by as much as 30% since the 90’s and has sky rocketed since—that is until the CRASH. The people in which we had trusted, had gifted our hard earned cash squandered it in satanical pyramid Ponzie schemes of never ending pay-backs. I note with pleasure what Willis Harman, co-founder of the World Business Academy remarked years ago: “The dominant institution in any society needs to take responsibility for the whole, as the church did in the days of the Holy Roman Empire”. But making large sums of money seemed to be the bankers creed: sheer greed! The pollution of our seas will cause “the death of 1/3 of the coral reefs in the world and the death of 10,000 other species a year will surely effect the system that supports human life” complains John L. Petersen, anthropologist, futurologist and writer concerned with the death of our planet. Swine flu has arrived with a dreadful vengeance. It starts generally as a human influenza transmitted to pigs and then converted back again as a deadly viruses reinvented and genetically modified for those in close association with the animals. But from humans it can be shared through simply being near one infected and he sneezes. Highly contagious and deadly we face a possible epidemic of pandemic proportions. Terrorism abounds. Piracy has returned to the high seas threatening to drive up oil prices again, lots of human hostages are still being held as are ships for ransom. Much information about this fateful day can be gleaned from the Internet and it is very thought provoking and potentially disturbing. There is so much more to this planet than we are aware of, governments know more than they let on and this subject would not enter in peoples minds but what if it is true, should we be told, what would be the consequences if we were? Would we really want to know? Later on this year the do do will really hit the fan when Columbia pictures release the film 2012, I suspect then there will be a greater interest on this 2012 subject! How did you discover your passion for fishing? That was when I was growing up and spending most of my primary school holidays in Yorkshire with my mother's family. Many members of the family were sea fishermen, some commercially on the trawlers and others had careers in the merchant and royal navy up to Captain. I was always This month we have an interview with going to be someone who moved abroad and lived by the Beachcomber John from The Beachcomber, or is sea I think.

it John Beachcomber from the Beachcomber?

I often went out on Redcar's fishing boats and spent low tides catching Crabs and collecting Mussels on the Scar (Rocks). Netting Shrimps was another past time I enjoyed, especially taking them home to my Aunt Emily. She was an expert cook and would boil them and we would eat them together, fresh and hot. It was her that gave me my love of food and started me off as a hobby chef.

Name John Beachcomber Where are you from originally? South London born. Where do you live now Mojacar Playa How long have you been in Spain 25 Years with the first 20 in Ibiza.

Emily's husband, my Uncle Johnnie was a semi professional beachcomber (Yeah really) and he taught me to fish from the beach as well as from the boat. I remember his long cane beach casting rods, hanging from the ceiling of his garage and the big wooden sea reels, called "Scarborough's". God I wish I had them now, just to touch and look at. He also showed me how to earn pocket money from collecting sea coal and where to find holidaymaker's lost coins and Rolexes! Much of my coarse fishing was learned with my friend Clive who lived next door to my Nan in Redcar and we would disappear before first light and not come back until just before dark which 8 year olds couldn't do safely now. We would fish for Trout in the river around the hills near Marske.

We never thought of taking food or drink as we would scrump our lunch and drink water from a stream or horse Who shares your house My wife Maggie and Lulu the Chihuahua. (8 weeks old as I trough. Often we would pull potatoes from a farmer's field, dig a hole, put them in and build a fire on top. Hey presto a write.) couple of hours later we went back for our jacket potatoes. Sometimes on our way fishing, while dawn was What to you do for a living Ha Ha, I'm supposed to be retired, how do you think I get approaching we would dodge the bull and pick field mushrooms to add to our potatoes. Oh happy times. away fishing so much. Tell us about the Beachcomber The Beachcomber Bar/Restaurant on Mojacar Playa is my son's business although the amount of time I spend there when not fishing you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise. I do however help him with menus and recipes and offer advice as dads do. I think he might call it "Sticking my nose in his business". More recently I have been getting a little more involved and it could be classed as work but the biggest difference is I don’t get any wages!

On holidays visiting my father's relatives in Scotland I would spend most of my time either on the sea loch feathering for mackerel or the fresh water loch close by, fishing for perch and pike. Loch's Long and Lomond bring back some wonderful memories. None more so though than when I was in the Scottish mountains (Driven by my cousin in his Austin 8) hanging over a rock on a fast running stream with a heavy line and big treble hook to foul hook what I think were Sea Trout, can't remember for sure but they did taste good.

Me and Matt (Aka Minty) built the Beachcomber and opened it nearly three years ago, from day one it was a success and still is. There will always be hiccups in business but that's life and you can't please all the people all the time. I'm not going to blow its trumpet, it stands up for itself.

As a teenager in London I fished mainly the parks, such as Tooting Beck and Clapham Common. I even had a trout out of the pond right in front of the House of Commons one night, real poaching that was. In 1965 I caught an 18lb 1oz Carp from Clapham Common. I used a 10' float rod with a

minute size 18 hook and 1.1lb (One point one pound) hook length line. Wow, that was some fight that lasted about 40 minutes and when I netted it, I turned round to find about a dozen booted and suited gents that had stopped their cars on the way to work. I also used to fish a few competitive matches on the river's Lee and Mole and fished a secret lake in the hills of Boxhill.

What are the basic differences between freshwater, saltwater and fly fishing? Reasonably easy, easy and bloody hard to master in that order. Which do you prefer (of the above)? Sea fishing from a boat I think nowadays although coarse fishing was my first love and still would be if I didn’t have to drive 6.5 hours to hook a decent fish.

I fished with some of Britain's best anglers, Steve Gardner and Kenny Collins when I joined Carshalton and Sutton Angling Club. I did many a Sunday tube journey to Ockenden in Essex to fish for wily Crucian Carp. I fished many matches on the Thames but couldn't compete with the likes of Ray Mumford, because I just couldn't get on with a pole! and anyway 16lbs of Bleak just doesn't rock my boat. I then realised the benefits of being with women and that was it for a few years.

Is fishing very popular in Spain ? Yes but different in that the Spanish fish more for the table and most have yet to learn anything about conservation. You only have to look on the fish counter at Mercadona to see tiny fish basically no good for anything other than making a stock, Moralla I think they are called. European Elections - Expat Candidates Lenox Napier

The candidate in the upcoming European elections for the CDL, the Centro Democratico Liberal party, is Sean O'Curneen Cañas, half Irish and half Spanish. Fourth on the list, i.e. in a high enough position to make a difference, is Jacqueline Cotterill, a British long time resident of Spain and currently deputy-mayor of Parcent (Alicante). Jacqueline also works closely with the AUN, the anti property abuse association which helped instigate the ‘Auken Report’ in Brussels which heavily criticised Spain for its urban corruption, ‘illegal homes’ and ‘land grab’ issues.

similar vein. To do this, we must support Europe and her democratic system. How to Vote

To vote in the European elections of June 7th, non-Spanishborn readers would need to be one of the 276,000 Europeans resident in this country who have intimated their interest in voting by signing a form when they were put on the padrón, or by having subsequently asked for one. Voting by post is difficult (you have to be somewhere in Spain), so those of us who vote will have been notified – at least in The CDL is the Spanish arm of the Alliance of Liberals and theory – as to where to go. Democrats for Europe (ALDE), which is the Union’s third largest political force, with 100 MEPs, 9 of the 27 EU When you vote in Spain, you do so by choosing a party list (a Commissioners, 5 Prime Ministers, more than 800 elected ‘papeleta’) from behind the curtain and, without marking it in National MP’s and thousands of Regional and Local any way, putting it in the voter’s envelope and taking it to the councillors. You can see Sean’s English-language webpage desk to put in the ballot box. You will need proper identification – your ‘Residents Card’ or the famous green at www.seanocurneen.com . A4 ‘Residence Certificate’ issued by the immigration police The CDL is a liberal centre party, and is where Europe together with your passport.

needs to be to best represent all of us. It’s neither to the right like the PP (which supports 'land grab' and is immersed in a major corruption scandal at the present time), nor ‘left’ like the PSOE (which likes to knock down British owned houses and has taken away our 'residents cards'). It's a party with a couple of 'Northern Europeans' in it who would understand our concerns living here in Spain and our second-class status generally. Perhaps even do something about it.

There are of course several other alternatives to the main groups, from the Marxist Leninists, the Huntin’ Fishin’ and Shootin’ Party and the Young Fascists to the Legalise Marijuana Party and even the fascinating ‘Citizens for Blank Votes’ (who leave their envelope empty) and the ‘Overwhelmed and annoyed Citizens Party’ (Ciudadanos Agobiados y Cabreados’) who are principally annoyed at the justice system in Spain. Not to mention overwhelmed.

The BBC were in Mojácar recently to record for Radio 4 some impressions regarding the European elections. I was one of those interviewed by them. They appeared to want me to say that the European Parliament was a waste of time, but I rather think the opposite. We don’t have any warm (and fuzzy) alternative any longer. The British embassy won’t represent anything beyond British exports and sporting heroes. The consulate is good for a new passport, but little else. The Spanish authorities, in their various forms, certainly don’t put us in front of any queue so it’s only a strong European authority that is capable, perhaps, of protecting us.

The recent Auken Report, which culminated in a vote against so-called ‘illegal homes’, the ‘land grab’ and other urban ills in Spain, sent a strong message to the Valencian and Andalucian town halls, regional governments and their many corner-cutting promoters. We need more messages in a

Spain, and indeed Europe, uses ‘proportional representation’ in politics so smaller parties do have a chance to get into the parliament and this is useful as minority concerns can then be aired in a public way. This reporter, like several major grass-roots associations (including the AUN and the Andalucian pressure group A3V), supports the CDL and notes that neither the Conservatives Abroad nor their rivals the International Labour Party, concerned no doubt by issues of corruption and the endemic lack of support over European residents’ rights in Spain, openly recommend their associate parties in Spain in the European Elections.

Air-conditioning - Make the right choice for you... By: Martin Allen, M.D. Air Conditioning Over the years working in Mojacar for a large and varied client base I have heard and come across a few common misconceptions about air conditioning units and the cost effectiveness as to their use in cooling or heating applications. Having passed and gained my qualifications via a good old fashioned apprenticeship over 21 yrs ago and only ever working in the Air conditioning and refrigeration industry for a total of 23 years with 5 and half of those years gained here in Spain, I hope that the following information may provide you with some guidance in the purchase of your airconditioning/heat-pump units. The most important choice you will have to make before your purchase for me is that are the units going to be your primary source of heating as well as cooling?

The radiator would have been running for possibly 2hrs or more to heat the room to the same temperature. The above highlights to me just how costly not having the correct information can prove to be as the air-conditioning unit fitted was a standard heat-pump. Within the air conditioning market there are available inverter air con/heat-pumps that can save you up to 30% on your running costs over a standard air con/ heat-pump. Imagine the savings that can be made on electricity bills. To prove the point I live with my wife and 3 young children in a 4 bed villa in the campo. We have the washing machine, tumble drier (when raining) and cooker in constant use every day. Our only form of heating is the inverter air conditioning/heat-pump systems that we have installed and our electricity bill from October to March was 612.98€. We do not use logs or gas bottles for heating and I am quite happy to show anyone my bills from endesa as proof. I wish my phone bill was as cheap!!!

This winter has, for many been longer and colder then normal and many have paid the price in the form of high electricity bills or gas bottle/wood consumption. Now due to the new tariff imposed upon high KW consumption on each household it has become imperative for many that the correct choice is made before any purchase of air-conditioning or indeed any You get what you pay for in this world and energy efficiency does not come cheap but the initial extra costs are soon reelectrical item is purchased. couped within a short period of time given that a good Heat-pump technology which is incorporated within the vast professionally installed system should last for 10 years in a majority of the air-conditioning units sold here has evolved domestic environment. over the last 15 years or so to become one of the most energy I would always recommend that whoever you use to install your efficient forms of cooling/heating that you could use. ac/heating systems that you always ask and discuss the pros I recently visited a client who required a routine maintenance and cons of the different systems available and not just plump carried out on his air-con units when the subject of high for the cheapest option.. It may cost you more in the long run. electricity bills came up. My client (2 people) who lived in a 3 bed villa had just recently paid over 300€ for his electricity bill MD Air Conditioning for the last 2 months. After questioning it came to light that he had been using an oil filled electrical 2.5kw radiator to heat the bedroom and in the lounge the same again but also in conjunction with the log fire. I asked the question why did you not use your air-con heatpumps to heat the rooms and the reply was " my friend said they cost to much to use". This is not the first time I have had this said to me. With this I conducted a simple experiment for the client and attached an amp clamp meter to the oil filled radiator power lead and switched it on. A reading of 12amps (a term of measurement for power consumption) was shown. Next the same meter was attached to the power lead of the bedroom ac unit and a reading of 3.2 amps was taken. Not only did the air conditioning unit consume nearly 3/4 less power then the oil filled radiator but as it was a forced air system and did not rely on convection currents, it heated the bedroom to its required temperature after 15 mins running.

Lionel and Constance- a short Story by EL Nico Firstly for those expecting to hear about Lionel’s exploits at a well-known Almeria hospital, apologies but the magazine’s solicitors are still sorting out a protracted legal battle. Recently the happy couple took up an invite to go over to Archie Lyon’s place in Mojacar. Now Lionel always liked Archie but could not understand why he called his children Dandy and Lennie. However he thought they were better names compared to what so-called celebrities call their offspring these days. On arriving, the customary gin and tonics were taken out to the pool area where Lionel spotted a new springboard. Evidently, Archie had imported this from somewhere in California and it was made of special steel and had tremendous spring. Luckily, Lionel had brought along his trunks for a swim, so was quickly in the pool and ready to test the aforementioned board. On walking out on it Archie was most precise about the need to avoid putting too much spring into the dive. Now, as usual for Lionel this is where it all went dramatically wrong. Very close by some other people were about to be inadvertently involved in a major incident. Anyway, he started jumping up and down and suddenly felt the reflex action of the board and in no time at all was shooting upwards at a great rate of knots. Luckily he had quite a well-padded posterior, which cushioned the blow as he landed back on the board. At once the momentum sent him back up but his trunks caught the side and were ripped off in one fowl go. The speed he was now travelling at was impressive. Archie and Con could not believe their eyes as Lionel shot over the wall

and landed on the roof of a police car parked in the street.

Drag Me to Hell

At this very moment the two policeman were having a relaxing coffee in the bar opposite when suddenly they heard a radio MUST COOK call that two assailants had stolen a car from Garrucha and were heading their way.

In no time at all they had sprinted across the road avoiding seeing Lionel on the roof and drove off in pursuit of the stolen car. At this stage the siren woke up poor Lionel and in no time at all he came to his senses. Here he was on the car roof hanging onto the flashing lights and shooting along the road towards the roundabout at Parc Commercial. Reality had also set in, as he was fully aware that he was naked and people were watching the pursuit and more Cooking with so him. To make matters worse some of Page 31 the crowd were using cameras or their mobiles to capture perhaps the picture of MUST READ their lives.

Both cars raced along overtaking anything in front making the whole scene completely chaotic. The stolen car now mounted the curb near the roundabout and hit the wall and two of its wheels were wrenched off. The Police car braked sharply coming to an abrupt halt. The officers were out in a flash with their guns raised. During these moments the sudden braking had sent Lionel once again skywards and through some rather sharp bushes and onto the grass area opposite the Parc Commercial.

The Royle Family My Our Lionel quickly came to his senses and Arse:The Best Bits due to his modesty, sprinted across the (Paperback)by Caroline road and onto the beach area. Initially he Aherne (Author), Craig Cash (Author)

felt some relief, but this was ended abruptly, who comes round the corner but about 60 people who were conducting a dress rehearsal for the forthcoming Moors and Christians event. In an instant he darted behind some rocks and salvation was there in the shape of a T-shirt and what looked like some other clothing obviously left there when someone had gone off for a swim. Within a minute he immerged from the rocks in the T-shirt that had printed on it “W I Groupie of the year” and a purple thong which hardly covered his buttocks or any other parts!! On coming round the side of the bar one of his neighbours appeared and was somewhat taken aback by Lionel’s new appearance. Quickly our man said he can give a perfectly logical explanation but could his friend drop him off down the road.

It's Fun, Fun, Fun at the Sinaloa Bar and Restaurant in Garrucha A a great time out visit Sinaloa Bar and restaurant in For Garrucha. Judging by the supplied photo's you are guaranteed a great time and great food!

On arriving back at Archie’s, Con is far from amused with Lionel’s new attire and everyone is asking where he had disappeared to? Eventually after a few stiff G and Ts Con takes Lionel home and the ever sweet couple turn in early. Lionel sleeps in next day and is somewhat puzzled when he sees Con lugging loads of papers out of the back of the estate car. She explains non too pleased, that when she picked up a free paper whilst out having a coffee, there on the front page was her husband naked astride a police car with a lovely pair of white buttocks on national display. In the meantime she had been everywhere trying to find as many of the free papers as possible. As luck would have it the post arrives and there is an invitation for Lionel to attend in Nottingham a reunion of the bank that he first worked for on leaving school. Con was very quick to book the ticket for him on the Internet and the flight would take off next morning at 8.30am. Taking Lionel out of the equation for a few days thought Con was out of sight and out of mind. Oddly enough there are so many people in and around Mojácar that will never forget any of Lionel’s numerous exploits over the years.

Freetime Sea Bass in Salt

COOKING WITH SHARON Roast Lamb

Ingredients (Serves 4)

For 4 – 6 people

1 x 1.25kg (31b) bass or bream, scaled, gutted and washed

1.5 kg (3 ½ lb) leg of lamb 2 tablespoons of olive oil Salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon fresh thyme 2 cloves of garlic finely sliced 1 wineglass of dry white wine 300 ml (½ pint) of water 2 tablespoons of wine vinegar Juice of 1 lemon

2.75kg (61b) coarse sea salt Melted butter and wedges of lemon, to serve

Preparation Put a layer of salt in a big, deep casserole up to a depth of 3cm (I'/, inches) and lay the fish on its back on top. Cover completely with the rest of the

Potatoes (the quantity just depends on how much you want to cook with the lamb) 1 or 2 large onions 4 or 5 whole garlic cloves (or add less if you don't want such a strong garlic flavour in the onions and potatoes)

salt. Bake in a very hot preheated oven, 220'C/425'F (gas mark 7), for about 35 minutes. When you remove the casserole from the oven knock the bottom of it to loosen the salt block. Then carefully knock the salt from around the fish. Serve at once with the hot melted butter and lemon wedges. If you want to add extra flavour simply add a combination of butter, tarragon, parsley, garlic, salt and pepper into the belly of the fish and close the opening before cooking. This method of preventing the flavours of the fish from escaping could be used for cooking many other fish and meat dishes.

La Buena Artesanía At La Buena Artesanía we have a large selection of wooden and cane furniture , lamps, dinner service, cutlery, decorations, gifts and so much more

Preparation: Rub the lamb with half of the olive oil, season it with salt and pepper and rub the thyme over the surface of the lamb. Let the lamb sit for an hour to absorb the flavours. Peel and cut the potatoes into slices about 1cm thick and place on the bottom of a roasting tin. Slice the onions and mix them with the potatoes and peel the garlic but leave the cloves whole and add to the potatoes and onions. Put the white wine, water, vinegar and lemon juice into a pan and bring to the boil. Next make some slits in the leg of lamb and put some slices of garlic into them and then rub the lamb with the rest of the olive oil. Place the lamb on top of the potatoes, onions and garlic and pour about half of the liquid over the meat. Place in a preheated oven at 230ºC/450ºF (gas mark 8) for 15 minutes. Then turn the heat down to 190ºC/375ºF (gas mark 5) and continue to roast it. Baste with the remaining liquid from time to time. If the potatoes soak up too much of the liquid you can make more.

COOKING WITH SHARON Patatas Bravas

Rice Pudding

Patatas Bravas ingredients:

For 4-6 people

(for approximately 6 tapas portions) 1½kg of peeled potatoes Olive oil to fry the potatoes in

About 2 Litres of Milk 160g of Short Grain Rice 1 Cinnamon Stick 1 Lemon (grate the rind) 350g of Caster Sugar Ground Cinnamon

for the bravas sauce: 1 onion finely chopped 1 clove of garlic also finely chopped 6 ripe tomatoes chopped about 600g 1 teaspoon of sugar (optional) 3 dried chillis 1 or 2 teaspoon of hot paprika - depends on how spicy you like your food 1 level soup spoon of plain flour approx. 200ml of water 1 teaspoon of sherry vinegar or wine vinegar salt freshly ground black pepper Preparation: Peel the potatoes, chop them into smallish chunks and boil them for about 5-10 minutes in salt water. Then leave them to cool. For the bravas sauce fry the onion, garlic and the dried chillis gently in some olive oil until the onions turn transparent - this should take about 10 minutes. Then remove from the heat, add the paprika and stir this in. Add the chopped tomatoes and the sugar, return the mix to the heat and simmer gently for about 5 minutes. The sugar is added to take any bitterness out of the tomatoes - this is optional as, like Gerry, you may find it too sweet with the sugar. Mix the flour with some water and then stir this into the sauce, add the 200 ml of water and leave to simmer for about 15 minutes to reduce the sauce. Now you should blend the mix either in a food blender or using a hand held blender. Once you've done this pass the mix through a sieve to remove the tomato skin and seeds. You should then end up with a nice thick bravas sauce. You may want to cut your potatoes a bit smaller into bite sized chunks if you left them a bit big when boiling. You can either deep fry them as I do or shallow fry them until they turn a lovely golden colour. Serve them on a couple of plates with plenty of the bravas sauce on them. The sauce is probably better hot but it can also be served cold.

Mojacar Magazine June to July 2009

Personally I'm not much of a fan of desserts after meals (a coffee and brandy is fine) so Spanish eateries suit me as the desserts on offer are often limited to a piece of fruit or a pre-packed flan or similar. Obviously the better the quality of restaurant you attend the better the sweet tray is likely to be. When I first came to Spain I assumed that rice pudding only came in tins and had to be heated before serving! One day after a particularly good MenĂş del dĂa I was delighted to see 'Arroz con Leche' as the sweet option. Realising that it was a cold dish surprised me at first but it was delicious and the cinnamon that was sprinkled on it really added to it nicely. Since then it's probably been my favourite 'postre' in Spain. Here's a very simple recipe for the dish.

Preparation In a large saucepan add the rice, milk, cinnamon stick and grated lemon rind. Under a low to medium heat allow the contents of the pan to simmer gently until the rice is well cooked and the milk has halved in volume. This usually takes around 45 minutes. Be sure to work on a very gentle heat so that there's no danger of burning the milk which can easily destroy the dish. Now add the caster sugar and continue cooking for about 10 minutes when the sugar should have fully dissolved and the liquid thickened. Next you must remove the pan from the heat and allow it to cool to room temperature. Once at the required temperature place the contents of the pan in an airtight container and put it in the fridge until it's cold. This usually takes around 3 hours but I prefer to refrigerate it overnight with a view to serve it the following day. Before serving remove the cinnamon stick and place the rice pudding in individual bowls lightly sprinkled at the last minute with the ground cinnamon.

Freetime Drag Me to Hell slots neatly between Sam Raimi’s two triumphant franchises, combining the energy, shocks and sick laughs of The Evil Dead movies with the slicker, populist thrills of his Spider-Man adventures. The result is one of the most unashamedly fun mainstream horror flicks of recent memory. Alison Lohman is ridiculously appealing as Christine, an ambitious loan agent competing for a promotion with a smarmy co-worker (Reggie Lee). In the hope of impressing her boss (David Paymer), Christine turns down the desperate appeals of an old gypsy lady (Lorna Raver), who begs for the bank not to repossess her home. In revenge, the woman places an ancient curse on Christine. It’s not long before our hapless heroine is being subjected to a wild succession of terrors, including being tossed around her room by an unseen spirit, blood spurting from her nose and eyes appearing in her pudding. And unless she can somehow appease the evil spirit, far worse is to come... Raimi proves that he hasn't lost the ability to pull off first-rate frights in the 29 years since the first Evil Dead movie, and there are some fantastically scary sequences here, from the old woman’s face suddenly emerging from shadows to a tense, unpredictable séance sequence. But this is actually a far funnier movie than you’d guess from the trailers, and Raimi sprinkles the colourful action with gallons of goo and slapstick fights that recall Ash's frenetic battles with the undead.

Films & Books Caroline Aherne, Craig Cash and Henry Normal Granada. 2001. Pbk. 143 pages. £9.99. The Royle family live to watch TV and make jokes about bodily functions (farting mainly). They are sink estate, working class, couch potatoes who are at the opposite end of the social scale to The Royal Family (God bless 'em!). Here we get the best bits of dialogue from the first three series. The series cover the marriage of Denise Royle to Dave Best, her subsequent pregnancy and the consequences of having an heir to the Royle throne. Although nothing much seems to happen in each episode, as you might expect since most of the action takes place as they sit around watching telly, the dialogue is sharp and funny. Its creators would say it reflects the real viewing situation, where the family lives through and in front of that little electronic box; on a more negative note you can see it as taking the piss out of the majority of its own viewers! The later reaction is mainly avoided because the acting and script is so good that you enter their lives and see them as people rather than as loud mouthed stereotypes.

As this book shows it is so well observed and miles away from the majority of refined middle-class 'semi-detached' sitcoms. The Royle family revels in being common; when their teenage son Anthony takes up with a 'posh' girl he tells them that on Christmas Day they will play parlour games at her home. Denise asks "Is their telly broke?" Whilst the Dad in his usual manner comments, "Parlour games my arse. Ey, tell you what you'd be good at, that's if they play it - hunt As you’d expect from Raimi, the editing and camerawork the giro." crackle with energy (including the occasional trademark crashzoom), and the action barely pauses for breath. But the key to This collection of best bits of script combined with plenty of Drag Me to Hell’s success is its attention to character. Christine colour pictures provides an excellent taster for those has plenty of unusual character detail that is cleverly introduced unfamiliar with the Royle's and a reminder for fans of why it without the need for laboured exposition: for instance, we learn, that this former farm girl used to have a weight problem following is so watchable. Even in the scariest moments, the emphasis is very much on keeping a smile on the audience’s face: in terms of horror movies, this is the polar opposite of something like Martyrs. The lack of extreme violence, along with the slick visuals and high production values, means this is a movie that possesses broad mainstream appeal, but it does it without resorting to the bland, watered down scares of the majority of PG-13 chillers of recent years.

her father’s death, and the shock of what’s happening drives her to tubs of ice-cream. Even the minor characters are unusually well-developed, with a likeable Justin Long in the role of Christine’s rich but supportive boyfriend, and Dileep Rao brooding magnificently as the intense medium who takes American Express. If anyone had written Raimi off as something of a spent creative (if not commercial) force after the disappointing Spider-Man 3, Drag Me to Hell reasserts his ability to make classical narrative pictures with style, wit and verve. It's a blast from start to finish, and we demand a sequel immediately. Page 34

Dad Royle would say, "watchable my arse, who wants to read a book about a damn telly programme? You watch it on telly, not read it, what's the use? It's like having a shite and then reading about it, one is real the other's just stupid words on paper. Chuck the book away and watch the bloody programme why don't you?" I say buy it and don't listen to him, he doesn't know his arse from his elbow.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

My 10 month old grandson was catered for with a high chair and devoured one of the children’s specials cut up into smaller pieces, no cutlery needed!!! and at 3.50 euros it was good value for money. Our party ordered southern fried chicken burger with salad and chips, beer battered fish with chips and mushy peas, Cajon chicken wraps and meat & Potato pie, chips and peas. The girls finished with banana By Paul Matthews, split topped with chocolate sauce and a white chocolate covered magnum. The Beachcomber is value for money and the portions are more than generous, go there to chill out with a cold drink, or dine with confidence.

‘Beachcomber John’ was on duty and not out fishing for a change! The Beachcomber always has people sat on the terrace, it’s a very rare occasion that there are few there. This is testimony to its popularity amongst visitors and people who live in the Mojacar area.

YOUR SEARCH FOR A GREAT DEAL CONTINUES

A Classic Ride Now my article for this edition is based solely on my search for a “new” motorbike. Now when I say new I of course mean new to me and not costing more than £700 in total. That price bracket is dictated by the price I got selling my old bike and the fact that with 4 kids there is unfortunately more important things (according to the wife) to spend our limited budget on. This price restriction could be easily solved by putting the kids on Ebay with a special offer of buy one get one free but apparently is not allowed either! I am very open to what type of bike to buy. It could be another super fast sports, a laid back Enduro type cruiser or a real Harley type chop and the choice really is endless. I have spent hours trawling through the internet and reading bike magazines so much so that my wife has declared that if I do not buy one very very quickly I will be reading divorce papers as, and I quote, “I’m already a bike widow so I may as well be by myself” Hmmm that could be a quick way to get rid of the kids but I have a sneaky suspicion that I wouldn’t be any better off financially if I go down this road So has this spurred me onto a quick decision and a new bike? Nope. I have ridden over a dozen bikes in the last week and the problem is that in this price range there always seems to be an array of little issues with the bikes that could quickly turn into big issues. I again find myself being pulled back to a reliable make and model of bike that I know well. Parts are cheap and they are real fun to ride. They produce around 90bhp which is fantastic for a bike that goes back 20 years. They still have a fantastic styling and most important of all they have a great arse. The acceleration is fantastic and it’s built the way a real bike should be, you can feel the weight and the cornering is superb! And here it is....

Mojacar Magazine June to July 2009

It’s a Suzuki GSX 600 F. I love these bikes, so much so I have owned 3 of them. The one pictured was mine. I sold it because I fancied something different but now I think this was a mistake. Now don’t get me wrong there are plenty of these superb modern classics around but I seem to be in the rare position where I have sold a bike in really good condition and now cannot find anything else of the same age that is anywhere near it. You do have to be careful when buying a classic so take your time and do your research including how much it will be to insure. Make sure parts are still readily available and cheap to buy. Take into consideration the condition of the tyres as these are not cheap to replace and always try to get one with a full MOT. Don’t worry too much about tax as this is normally quite cheap. So I am bikeless, close to divorce and not allowed to sell the kids. The only decent bike in a cheap bracket I can find is the same as the one I have just sold. There’s a space in the shed that needs filling with a toy and will it be done soon?....probably not because there are still loads of bikes to look at out there and I really fancy something bigger!!!! How much does a decent solicitor cost these days?

All the latest news and views from the world of Satellite Television By Richard Shanley of Europa Digital Big news in the world of satellite television. Sky are currently changing all of their viewing cards. It is the first time they have done so in over 5 years. This started at the beginning of this month and is expected to take 3 to 4 months to complete. If you have a Sky card ordered on a UK address tell whoever is there to watch out for post arriving from Sky and to send it on immediately. The cards will be preactivated to your box so only need inserting and all will work as before. You may then destroy your old card. If however you have a viewing card that was supplied to you and you don’t know the address it was ordered on then you have a problem. Get in touch with whoever supplied you the card and see what they say. Unfortunately a lot of businesses are not operating any more and you will struggle. The only option (as long as you have had your card over 12 months) is to cancel your payments and reorder a new viewing card from Sky on an address in the UK. We can do this for you via our UK office. If you have any questions or need any help please call us on 950 133 233 and we shall do our utmost to assist you.

respectively in its next two outings. The show is currently facing an Ofcom investigation following claims that it promoted transphobia in a recent episode.

The way in which the UK watches television is changing, with figures from Sky showing the rise of time-shift TV as the nation moves to PVRs and video on demand. Nearly one in five people on Sky view time-shifted content through their Sky+ boxes, making it the most popular 'channel' on the platform. Europa Digital has got its hands on the latest statistics from Sky, and they show an increasing shift away from 'linear' television – viewing programmes live as they are broadcast. More people watch their own personal 'channel' – made up of the content they have recorded and the Sky Anytime VOD content – more than any of the traditional channels, with 18 per cent watching time-shifted content. This has caused a major change in the way that Sky looks at viewing figures. Previously 'overnights' gave a view of what the most popular shows were, but Sky now tracks data 'well beyond' the traditional windows, with Sky+ and VOD increasing aggregate audiences for the shows. Sky gives the example of popular US import Lost, which saw as many people (roughly 500,000) watch it through Sky+ as watched the original broadcast on a Sunday evening. On top of that, another half million people watched the show We now have the new Freesat Plus HD PVR’s in stock. This through repeats, recordings of repeats, interactively through is basically a machine that allows you to record onto hard disc the red button or through Sky's online Sky Player VOD service. (just like Sky Plus), receive HD channels inc. BBC, ITV & Channel 4 but all without the need to pay a monthly Steve Jones and Fern Britton have reportedly signed up for an subscription. Please call in to the Europa Digital offices to see updated version of BBC quiz show Telly Addicts. According to this system in operation. We are on the top floor of the The Sun, T4's Jones will host the quiz, while Britton will appear Commercial Centre in Puerto Rey just up from the as a team captain. A second team captain has not been Bouganvillas roundabout, 200 metres before the Hotel confirmed. Jones and Britton apparently impressed BBC Mexico. bosses when they both appeared on Let's Dance For Comic A prequel to Only Fools And Horses is reportedly being penned by the sitcom's original writer. John Sullivan told The Mail On Sunday that the new series will focus on Del Boy's mysterious dad Freddy Robdal. Nicholas Lyndhurst, who played Rodney in the original, is apparently lined up to play Freddy The Frog, a gangster from Peckham. Although the BBC is yet to give the prequel a final go-ahead, Sullivan said: "Nick and I are both on board the train, if you like, waiting to arrive at the station." The original sitcom first aired in 1981 and had a regular slot until 1996 when characters Del Boy and Rodney became millionaires after finding an antique watch. Moving Wallpaper star Ben Miller has not been told whether the show will return next year. The actor confirmed that he is keen to reprise his role as hapless TV producer Jonathan Pope for a third series of the ITV1 comedy. Speaking to the Daily Star Sunday, Miller explained: "I would love it as it's such fun to play, but who knows? It's all about budgets and we hope to be back next year." Wallpaper dropped to an audience low of 1.4m last month in a head-to-head battle with Comic Relief. The programme was then seen by 1.82m and 1.88m

Relief. "Steve was really great on Let's Dance and bosses spotted his chemistry with Fern backstage so they're both thrilled with their new roles," said a source. "We haven't signed up the second captain yet but we're looking for someone funny. There are a few names being bandied around and viewers won't be disappointed." The new show will apparently begin shooting in the summer. Myleene Klass would be an "excellent" replacement for Fern Britton on This Morning, Richard Madeley has reportedly claimed. The 52-year-old, who hosted the show with wife Judy Finnigan for 13 years, said that the former Hear'Say singer would shine on the ITV1 daytime programme. Britton announced last month that she was quitting the show at the end of its current series after a ten-year stint. "I've worked with Myleene Klass when Judy had a week off to have some work done on her eyes and she was very good, extremely good and she'd be excellent although she is very thinly spread at the moment," Madeley told The Daily Telegraph. "[She does] so many things so that might have an impact." Madeley added that Melanie Sykes, 38, who has also been linked to the role, would be a good alternative as she is "very switched on".

Chris Moyles has been nominated for a radio award just days after he was warned about his on-air behaviour. The Radio One DJ has been named in the breakfast show category at the Sony Radio Academy Awards. Last week, Moyles was deemed to have breached broadcasting guidelines by mocking Will Young in a high-pitched, effeminate voice. Ofcom said that listeners could reasonably have thought the piece was "promoting and condoning certain negative stereotypes based on sexual orientation" as Young is gay. The regulator ruled that Moyles's show also breached its code last October by letting Russell Brand make a lewd joke about Andrew Sachs's granddaughter on air following the Manuelgate scandal. Moyles's show is up against Nicky Campbell and Shelagh Fogarty for Radio 5 Live Breakfast; Radio Clyde's Bowie at Breakfast; Shaun Keaveny on BBC 6 Music; and Kiss 100's Breakfast with Rickie, Melvin & Charlie.

BBC sports presenter Clare Balding has apologised for joking about jockey Liam Treadwell's teeth after his Grand National win on Saturday. The BBC received 1,477 complaints about Balding's remarks, made in an interview after the race. Speaking to Treadwell, she said: "Give us a big grin to the camera." When he did not open his lips, she added: "No, no, let's see your teeth. He hasn't got the best teeth in the world, but you can afford to go and get them done now if you like." The jockey, 23, responded: "Well I could do, but I ain't complaining. It might be bringing on bad luck if I do that, though." A spokesperson for the BBC said: "Clare Balding had no intention whatsoever of upsetting or embarrassing Liam Treadwell, but she fully accepts that she should not have raised the subject with him at that time. "The BBC and Clare apologise for any offence caused. Clare has also apologised directly to Liam Treadwell." A seven-figure sum is being spent on the rebrand of Paramount Comedy to Comedy Central, it was announced today. Activity across TV, print, outdoor and online will feature American comedy stars, including Sarah Silverman and Kenny from South Park, making mischief with British landmarks such as London's Gherkin and Centre Point towers. "Comedy Central offers viewers the biggest and best selection of comedy programming and the rebrand campaign has been designed to communicate this fact to loyal fans and potential viewers alike," said Jill Offman, Comedy Central's managing director. "Karamarama’s creative executions perfectly convey that we are the only modern comedy channel in the UK. We love our new look and the whole Comedy Central team looks forward to taking the channel to new levels of success over the coming year." Paramount Comedy hasl become Comedy Central, with Paramount Comedy 2 rebranded to Comedy Central Extra.

Interesting Stuff you may not know! Okey Dokey, as a friend of mine once used to say, here is another list of interesting stuff that you may not know!

and finally on this subject...

If you yelled for 8 years,7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. If you passed wind consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb. The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet. A pig’s orgasm lasts 30 minutes. (In my next life I want to be a pig..LOL) A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Do not try this at home .. maybe at work) The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male’s head off. The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It’s like a human jumping the length of a football field. The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. Some lions mate over 50 times a day. (I still want to be a pig in my next life…) Butterflies taste with their feet. The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue. Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people do. Elephants are the only animal that cannot jump. A cat’s urine glows under a blacklight. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain. Starfish have no brains. Polar bears are left-handed. Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.

Also regarded as a Mojacar, here is the symbol of welcome. story of it's birth and where it is today.. A Club for Touring Motorcyclists founded by the late Ken The Mojacar MTC was founded in October-1988 by the late Craven. It all started not too long after the Second World War Ken Craven with the aim of promoting and enjoying when Ken Craven, maker of the famous Craven Panniers motorcycle touring using those "roads less travelled". and his wife Mollie began to organize their ‘Partitours’ which were Continental adventure tours for groups of motorcyclists. Ken’s strong preference was for uncrowded roads and good scenery, meaning that main roads and large towns were avoided like the plague. The Partitours were very successful and continued for many years.

The route continued the Partitour tradition, seeking out minor roads and mountainous terrain to provide the most exiting and enjoyable riding experience possible. In the early years almost everyone camped, but with growing affluence and the wide availability of cheap Hostel accommodation in parts of Spain unknown to Costa-del-Concrete tourists, the emphasis has steadily changed. Nowadays the majority stay in Hotels and only a dedicated few camp nearby when sites are available. In 1988 Ken had been saying for several years that he was conscious of a fair load of anno domini and that his health was not as robust as it had been. He thought that it would be a good idea to form the large group of regular participants into a club so that some of the organizational burden should be shifted to an elected committee. The Mojacar Motorcycle Touring Club was duly founded in October 1988 and although its nature has remained very

much the same, it has since travelled to a variety of destinations. The Iberian Peninsular is probably the most popular venue but the club has attempted to visit countries other than Spain and Portugal on alternate years. The Rally is usually held in June and starts with a ferry crossing on a Friday night. The choice of ferry is left to individual members and a rough route is planned from the coast to the first nights stop. The small groups from each ferry, rendezvous en route or at the first night stop. As a rough guide, a rally to Spain will take two days through France on mainly D roads, which is hard riding but a wonderful start if the weather is kind.

From the inception of the Mojacar Rally, two weekend reunions have always been held in Lyme Regis on the first weekends of May and October. This tradition continues, May providing an opportunity to sort out final arrangements for the Rally and October, which includes the AGM, marking the end of the Club year, both are major social gatherings for the Club. In recent years the Spring reunion has included a run on the Sunday through the beautiful Devon and Dorset countryside and on occasions further field. Club activities have also increased to include monthly camping/hotel weekends plus a week in September, all organized by individual members to take advantage of their knowledge of their own areas of the country

Mojácar Area Cancer Support Once over the Pyrenees the daily mileages drop considerably from a little over 300 to generally around 200. This allows for leisurely pottering, exploration, refreshment breaks and even siestas if reasonably brief. Most plan to arrive at the night stops at about 6 or 7pm to allow for freshening up before the evening meal. On recent rallies "Rest Days" have been introduced in the middle of the trip so that people can carry out running repairs, explore or just laze. We try to choose an interesting final destination, allowing at least three days there for relaxation before setting off home. En route we ride in small groups of usually three or four for companionship and mutual assistance in the event of mishaps. For the return trip participants are left to select their own route depending on their preferences. Some choose to head back to the Channel Ports without delay whereas others prefer a leisurely trip taking the opportunity for excursions on the way. Whatever your preferences, it should always be possible to find likeminded companions to team up with.
