arberide again! To sign up for an unforgettable week of fundraising and learning go to barbersride.com. Last year they raised £’000’s for Great Ormond Street and even made the pages of iconic biker mag Back Street Heroes. The initiative was founded by Colin Petrie of Hard Grind for bikers, barbers and beautiful souls that want to do something fun for a great cause. Barbersride 2018 starts 5th August at Preston Harley Davidson and then takes in Harley dealerships in Chesterfield, Newmarket, Brighton and Bridgewater arriving 9th August. Every stop will include a barbering seminar.

Seminars announced so far from: Colin Petrie of Hard Grind, Wez Omelia of The Heartbreak Barber Club (@the.heartbreak.barber), Jen Winters (@phoneypony_ barber) and Christian Wiles (@ christianwilesmen). The trip costs £150 per rider which includes all seminars, rider support vehicle and a lifetime of memories. Robert Grosvenor awarded Grand Master Barber title

R

obert Grosvenor of Headmasters in Birmingham celebrated a proud moment in his 30 year career as a barber when he was recently awarded the accolade of ‘Grand Master Barber’ from the British Master Barbers. Robert was tested on his skills, business management, health and safety standards and professionalism. “It was a bit nerve-wracking, the criteria is extremely strict. I had to send a video of myself doing practically everything that a barber might do, including cutting using scissors, using a razor and clippers and teaching other students.

Everything is thoroughly checked by a team of assessors, who are some of the industry’s top barbers, and they decide whether someone is to be accredited,” said Robert. Congrats Robert!

MOBAA’S: MODERN BARBER AWARDS One lazy Sunday afternoon in Soho 13th May 2018, 100 Wardour Street Club and Lounge. Barbering deserves the best platform to celebrate their hard work, so MB went all out to get a stunning venue at the heart of London for the very first MOBAA’s finals.

roceedings kicked off around 1pm with a champagne (and beer) reception, followed by light bites and live music. The MOBAA’s welcomed around 250 guests to an informal celebration that allowed everyone to mingle, chat and enjoy just what was promised…a lazy Sunday afternoon in London. MB’s dedicated compére was Edward Hemmings of

Alan d Hair (@alandhair). Edward has been a barbering educator and men’s stylists and a regular compére for the Fellowship of British Hairdressing for many years. The awards presentation started around 2.30pm with Edward keeping everything on track and on time. Each winner was announced by the category sponsor.

ndy Willis from Andy’s Barbershop in Bicester finalised in three categories of the MOBAA’s – Modern Barber Awards. The moment the finalists 20 / WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK

were announced Andy and his team went into action to make sure that the news converted into real opportunities for their barbershop.

“We sat down with our PR, Becky Mansfield and targeted the local media. TV, radio, newspapers and

online. Within three weeks we appeared on local TV, national TV, local radio and in two newspapers.

We estimate that we got at least £5000 of publicity that we didn’t have to pay for and that’s fantastic!” explains Andy.

OUTSIDE RADIO BROADCAST VISITS ANDY’S

Andy and the team hosted a live outside broadcast on BBC Oxford News. The presenter interviewed Andy and customers and even included MB’s own editor via phone for comment. The broadcast made it all the way to BBC One news which is publicity that is literally beyond price especially as it attracts a minimum of 85,000 viewers. The newspaper article took up a half page feature and also appeared on the publisher’s website. Did all that coverage in and around Bicester bring Andy business?

“One hundred percent! Bicester is the fastest growing town in Oxfordshire and between the radio, TV, print and online we had our story covered.

It definitely brought new business into the shop. We track our business week to week, year on year and even though we are bigger now than last year, the business was 150 clients up on the previous year,” says Andy.

The benefits of reaching the finals of the MOBAA’s – Modern Barber Awards were many but a motivated and excited staff was definitely one of them. Typically Andy enthusiastically encourages and reminds his staff to upsell shaves and retail when customers are in their chair but no reminder was necessary about the MOBAA’s. Andy says “I have 10 fulltime members of staff and every one of them was happy to share the news of reaching the finals. It’s a brilliant way to show customers that we are

working hard to be the best we can be and always pushing to improve our service and our business. The mirror stickers were great and the certificates were framed and put up pride of place in our VIP area. We added the info to our website and included it in our blog and of course in our social media too.”

The entire team, all 13 of them, came to the finals event on May 13th and although they ultimately didn’t take home a trophy, Andy says “We always intend to keep pushing to be on top of our game. The Finals event was really wonderful. It was a great opportunity to dress up and go out as a team. Seeing people like Mike Taylor and Robert Rix showing such excitement at their win was really great. It was a brilliant, supportive afternoon and everyone was just blown away by the venue and the event. My father always taught me to be gracious in defeat. I sent personal messages of congratulations to all of the winners. We will keep entering and we will keep going for the win!”

Andy’s experience as an awards finalist proves that with the right planning every finalist in any award can enjoy returns in publicity, new business, employer reputation and staff motivation and that’s a prize worth having, every time!

ope you are all enjoying the nice weather? Cutting hair with a nice tan is the future. Like anything, barbershops look better in the sun. Staff look cooler and there’s always a nice buzz around the shops.

Anyway, on with the show… and what a show Barber Connect was this year!

Bigger and better than before, huge congratulations to Matt and Dan at Barber Blades for organising such a great event. Just over six years ago, I was tasked with making Wahl the industry leaders. This meant making a plan to ensure every event, trade show, expo, video, picture and anything that we do was super professional. To make this happen, you need to surround yourself with the best in the industry, and that was no exception at Barber Connect.

We had the best barbers and men’s stylists putting on inspiring shows that were educational, so it’s great to see the hard work paying off.

The real stars though are the great team working behind the scenes. From our events manager to social media, marketing and graphics, they deliver on everything that goes out. We are light

years in front of the opposition and that all starts with having a plan.

I was only saying to a young eager barber the other day that he needed to calm down, stop doing 100 tweets a day or tagging 50 people every five minutes. Just concentrate on quality content that is going to engage your audience and have a plan! It’s really helped me to go from dominating Salon International to dominating every single show we attend.

The American Crew All Star Challenge Global Finals held in the beautiful city of Barcelona put the UK’s very own Sam Wall @mrsamwall on the biggest international stage…ever!

ach year American Crew invites entries from around the globe for barbers and men’s hair professionals to create their interpretation of the perfect American Crew man. There are strict criteria that must be met and the look includes

DEAR BARBERSHOP CLIENT… Here are a few things you should know about how you can put a smile on your barber’s face. Carlie Firth (@carliefirth88) of Ruger Lytham speaks up!

At Ruger we work on appointments. If you book an appointment and then you don’t turn up your barber loses income, they lose the chance to refill the spot. So please, please cancel your appointment with at least 12 hours notice.

Be on time. Your barber wants to devote all the time they can to your cut. They want to deliver great service. So give them the best chance to do just that, be punctual.

Think about what you want and if possible bring pictures as a reference point. Having a common understanding of your destination style is crucial to success. Be honest with your barber about your likes and dislikes. If you are not certain about guard lengths or barbering terms then don’t be shy, just ask to clarify.

Leave the phone calls till the end of the cut. If it isn’t life or death, then please don’t take or make a call on your mobile during the service. If you leap out of your chair to take a call or your barber pauses so that you can chat, then it breaks the flow of the haircut. Your barber will have to spend extra valuable time rechecking and reassessing to ‘find their place’ in the cut.
