Positivity From the MnUSA President
In addition, MnUSA Region 8 clubs again participated in Toys for Tots, collecting 825 toys and $2,200 in cash donations, and was on the local NBC affiliate KARE 11 News, 10pm Friday night newscast.
The ‘Positivity Party’ (charter member, yours truly) has been out campaigning as of late, with stops in Region 1 in Red Lake Falls, Region 5 in Owatonna, and Region 8 in Minnetonka, visiting with clubs at the regional meetings, and discussing the positive things we have been doing at MnUSA. If you have a regional meeting coming up, let me know and I will try my best to attend.
We also had a very nice positive piece in MidWest Outdoors magazine in the Minnesota section with a title of “MnUSA 40 Years Later, Still Blazing Trails.” It focused on what we do as an organization and the importance of getting the message out about: no trespassing; volunteering—brushing, clearing, sign posting and maintaining miles of trails; education, snowmobile safety training, and so on.
So, does MnUSA present a positive message about snowmobiling? I’m sure trying to do my share, but I challenge you and your club, to do the same. Anything I’ve listed above can be accomplished by you and your clubs, so if we all work together, we can accomplish a tantamount of good will and positivity.
If I’m doing the math (and I kind of like to do that), Region 1 has 32 clubs, Region 5 has 42 clubs, and Region 8 has 9 clubs, with varying amounts of members that show up to regional meetings. MidWest Outdoors has a readership of about 65,000 between print and digital. KARE 11’s Nielsen ratings for a 10pm Friday night newscast is around 590,000 households. So, if you add all that up, MnUSA has provided a positive message in the last month or more, to darn near three quarters of million people, not including 10,000 magazines, to members.
Let’s make it an even million! You can help by submitting club news of your positive community involvement, and if you haven’t started, now’s a good time to start, so we can bank that positivity for future use. Page 34 of this month’s issue has a full-page club submission form with deadlines and descriptions of what we are looking for and where to send them.
January is our safety issue, so you will see an emphasis on safety, safety training, and the instructors who sacrifice time and money to train the future of our sport (read more in the Milestones column—check it out!) Snowmobile Safety Week is January 14th-22nd—let’s get out and promote that in our regions, as safety is tantamount to our survival as an organization and sport.
Region 8 is our destination this month. Constantly dealing with development and 1031 exchange purchases makes it difficult to maintain trails in Region 8, but with a lot of perseverance and good luck, it can get done. And if clubs are social clubs, they tend to really give to their communities and community programs and events. I evidenced that firsthand at the Delano Snowstormers Silent Auction fundraiser and the Foxtailers Trail Opener party, both held the first weekend in December. Both events were packed with attendees, with many good prizes donated by local business that went to support these very hard-working clubs. Oh, and I happened to pick up some nice auction items myself.

Happy New Year!
Tim Heinen
Wow—can you believe that it is 2023? Think about how far the advancement of sleds have come compared to the earlier days of riding, heck, even compare the progress from early 2000s, but we will not talk about the recalls that plague us.
As I sit here and write this article, it is snowing like crazy outside. Thank you, Snow Gods. By now, most of you have been out riding the trails, and I hope that you either have joined a club, and/or volunteered some of your time to get the trails ready for the season. Getting out and having the chance to ride the countryside in areas that you can’t see by car, is both breathtaking and relaxing. There’s nothing like riding to take the weight of the world off your shoulders. At the same time, it can take a fun run and turn it into a bad situation.
For example, it was early January in the 1970-something. We had plenty of snow on the ground and the riding was good. Later that week, the weather turned, and there was a major rainstorm. You might say to yourself: Rain? Come on, it’s January! Well, it rained the whole day and then turned to snow that night—and boy, did it snow! You would have never known that it rained earlier.
Being young and dumb, I went ditch riding in the country the next day, and the temps dropped into the single digits. What a blast I was having, but it quickly turned sour. As I was riding along the bottom of the ditch in the deep snow, I broke through a thin layer of ice that had formed from all the rain we had. In haste, I steered the sled to get out of the water, and one ski went under the ice, causing the sled to roll back down into the ditch, with me hanging on.
Next thing you know, I am underwater. I wrestled the sled off me and stood up in water that was waist deep. Crap! Now what do I do? My sled wouldn’t run as the engine sucked in water. I looked around to get my bearings and noticed a farm about 1.5 miles away. So, I took off running, then walking, then crawling to the farmhouse; my right leg was getting very stiff as it was freezing.
Luckily someone was home, but by then my leg was frozen hard as a rock; the skin wouldn’t even push inward. With his quick thinking, we got my frozen wet clothes off and he had me sit in front of those old-school hot water radiant heaters to let my leg warm up very slowly. He then called my father and mentioned to him my circumstance.
As my leg was thawing out, my brother and father retrieved my sled out of the ditch. By the time they came to pick me up, a few hours had passed, and I was able to bend my leg a little, but the pain was horrible. What was going through my mind was— Am I going to lose my leg? Time will tell. I went home and allowed the leg to thaw out slowly. I went to the doctor the next day to have the leg checked out and there were no problems. Today, the cold weather does bother the knee some.
I know that there are “Ditch Bangers” out there, and they love it. I used to like it, until I realized all the hidden dangers that are under the snow. There are more “so-called” dangers with all the road construction going on. Road departments are putting in more and more holding ponds, and they love to pile up the culverts with large, jagged rocks called “rip-rap.” They even lay the rocks across the width of the ditches to slow down erosion. This stuff will “rip” your sled apart and if you “rap” your head into one, it’s a big ouch!
So, with that said, I will not break trail in a ditch, as there are too many hidden dangers, and I like my sled to last. Heck, I would like it to last at least through this season!
On Nov 26th, 2022, I attended the Dakota Trails setup appreciation dinner at Cannon Falls Golf Course. This is a yearly event that Dakota Trails puts on for all who lend a helping hand in getting the trails ready in Dakota County. The attendance for this event was roughly 70 people. Besides the happy hour and dinner, door prizes were given away at the end, thanks to sponsors that help support our clubs in Dakota County. Everyone walked away happy, with a prize, and a sound mind that the trails are ready for the season.
Thanks to all that helped get the trails ready in Dakota County and of course throughout the whole State of Minnesota. Be safe out there and ride smart!

I was quite surprised by the results of last month’s election. I suspect that you were as well. The supposed “red wave” never materialized. In fact, the midterm elections were great for Democrats. Normally in a midterm, the party in power suffers significant losses in congressional seats. This election, the Democrats were able to increase their majority in the U.S. Senate and the Republicans could only achieve a razor thin majority in the House of Representatives. Very unusual! Pundits and analysts have scrambled to discover/ pontificate on why what happened, happened. My perspective is that there was not one factor but it was a combination of things leading to the final results, but those factors are subjective at best.
In Minnesota, the Republicans suffered an unmitigated defeat. Most of us involved in the political process assumed that the GOP would increase its State Senate majority and take control of the House. In reality, the DFL won the trifecta. Democrats now control the Governor’s office as well as both houses of the Legislature. It will be interesting to see what they do with their majority status. They might govern wisely or they might get a bit crazy. Time will tell but crazy has never worked for either party.
All this is interesting but should have little impact on snowmobiling. MnUSA has always had friends in both parties who were there when we needed them most. We will not forget our champions who retired or were defeated in the polls. Personally, I’ll really miss Representative Rob Ecklund and Senator Melissa Franzen. Both are snowmobilers who were dedicated to protecting and advancing our sport. Undoubtedly, you will see them on the trails this winter.
One law that is not new but of great importance is MnUSA’s landowner liability law. Under Minnesota Statues 604A.2027, landowners who permit public access to their land cannot be held liable for negligence if someone is hurt while enjoying the free access to that land. The landowner still can be sued for intentional acts, wanton or reckless acts, but the protection offered by this statute is nothing short of amazing. The landowner can grant a permit/easement to a snowmobile club for a grant in aid trail and sleep soundly knowing that he/ she is protected under law. Of course, if a landowner charges a fee for this access, the law does not apply and all bets are off.
At this writing, a large storm is heading to Minnesota and should dump a pile of white gold on our trails. I am currently working out of state. Any bets as to whether I can get back to God’s country in time?

The early bird registration deadline for Rendezvous at Grand Casino Hinckley is January 10, 2023. The room block is also released on January 10, 2023. Get your room and registration in to take advantage of the lower prices.
The River Valley Trailblazers Club is again challenging all MnUSA snowmobile clubs to participate in the “TAB” Off —collecting tabs to give to the Ronald McDonald House charity. Saving your “TABS” helps to support families with a medical crisis staying at Ronald McDonald Houses in the Upper Midwest.
Bring your tabs to the Rendezvous in Hinckley and turn them into Steve Blake. If you are not able to turn them in then, contact Sandy Doherty at 952-445-9130 or threegamesandy@ aol.com to see about arranging a pickup.
What’s Happening at
Displaying Registration Numbers
Minnesota Administrative Rule 6100-5000 still requires your registration numbers to be displayed on your snowmobile. Unfortunately, the Snowmobile Rules and Regulations booklet for 2022-23 again has the wrong information in regard to the height of the required numbers. Several years ago, MnUSA and the MN DNR agreed that the numbers should be 1 7/8” in height, and not 3”, as still shown in the Rule and the Rules and Regulations book. We are currently working with the MN DNR to correct this information as shown on their current online information. The book and the rule will be corrected for next season.
We are still working with the MN DNR to move to a larger registration decal for sleds which will allow us to move away from the current numbering requirement. Hopefully we will be able to convince our legislature to pass language that puts an end to the number requirement.

Snowmobiling Memories
Part 2 of a three-part series
by Emily Heinen
Growing up, snowmobiling was a highlight of every winter break. I don’t even remember our first trip to Michigan; every year it was just there, waiting for me, after the school bell rang for the last time in December. We would spend Christmas together at home, and the next day we were off on the six-hour road trip that would bring us to the Upper Peninsula. Dragging the trailer behind us, my parents playing ‘90s country music on the radio, my brother and I arguing over which snacks to eat—these memories return to me each winter.
Each year we stayed with the same lodging company in the same small, snowy town. I’d wake up in the morning to my mom cooking breakfast and my dad warming up the sleds,
getting them ready for a full day. For our week there, we would ride eight-hour days, hitting all our favorite spots— Ontonagon, Houghton and Hancock, Lake of the Clouds. It became tradition; we would hit the same small bars for lunch and the same little shop for ice cream, and my brother and I would play outside in the snow after a long day on the sled.
Snowmobiling at a young age allowed me to see places and experience things I would have never gotten otherwise. I was able to spend long winter days outdoors with my family, admiring snow-covered pines and wildlife crossing the trails around us. We could support small businesses, from the cabin we stayed in, to the small restaurants that relied on the seasonal business. And I was able to get into an activity that brought me outside of my comfort zone. My young hands had trouble gripping the throttle and I was afraid of going too fast, but my parents pushed me to keep trying. I was glad that they did. No matter how slowly I rode the sled, I was always happy to be out there.
Read more of Emily’s experience in next month’s issue.

TRAIL GROOMING PARTNER IN MINNESOTA
Goodridge Trailblazers to Host Goodridge/Grygla I-500
by Nicole Kiesow
The summer of 2018 the Goodridge Trailblazers were given the opportunity to host the International 500. It was getting harder for the race to be held as it was traditionally held from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to the Twin Cities area in Minnesota. The difficulty with crossing the border between Canada and the United States and the ever-changing snow conditions were making it very difficult for this race to happen.
The Goodridge Trailblazers is a small club, and to do a race of this size would be very difficult. The club has very good friends to the north, the Fourtown-Grygla Sportsman’s Club. Many of the members of the Trailblazers are also members of the Sportsman’s Club. The FourtownGrygla Sportsman’s Club has a long tradition of maintaining all the snowmobile and ATV trails in the area and was the logical choice to ask for help to get this going.
So, after a few meetings, it was decided that with all of us working together we would give it a try. Now 4 years later, we are doing it again February 11-12, 2023. It is the longest cross-country snowmobile race in the lower 48 states, and it is a source of pride for the communities of Goodridge and
Grygla, Minnesota. It takes everyone from both communities to come together to put on the race and it is very much enjoyed by everyone that attends.
We welcome both professional and the amateur racers as this year will include the KC Pro West Mini 500. The race will include racers age 4-17. This weekend will truly have something for everyone. We look forward to seeing you in February.

The Westonka Snoblazers celebrated the club’s 50th anniversary this past year with a record number of active members participating in a variety of annual events and, of course, riding together throughout the sledding season. What started as a desire by club founders to promote the growing sport of snowmobiling in and around the western shores of the Lake Minnetonka area has steadily grown over the past five decades. The founders’ emphasis on promoting safer sledding, fostering goodwill and friendship, and sharing in the riding experience hasn’t been lost on the club’s current vision.
In coordination with Southwest Trails Association, Snoblazers routinely supports local trail marking and maintenance tasks. Together with Hennepin County Sheriff’s Water Patrol, the club members plan and actively participate in hosting annual Snowmobile Safety Training. Every January Snoblazers support the Midwest Ride-In event as the sight and sounds of vintage sleds brings back fond memories to many of the members.
Riding locally when conditions allow, the club also plans several trips throughout the greater Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan trail networks each season. This year’s rides include the Emily/Outing area, Lake Vermillion, Big Fork, Orr/Voyageurs National Park, and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP). As a not-for-profit club, the Snoblazers also contribute annually to local charities. Outside of the sledding season, members stay engaged with other activities that include summer deck parties, boat tie-ups, river kayaking and canoeing, Adopt-a-Highway cleanup, and a holiday party each December. Please visit www.snoblazers.com for more information.

Our Unsung Heroes
Safety is a cornerstone of what MnUSA stands for, and for riders for generations and generations to know how to be a safe and responsible snowmobiler in Minnesota, it takes education. Who are these dedicated teachers we call instructors who have given tirelessly of their time to accomplish this monumental task? Those that teach DNR snowmobile safety training, and those that assist, are the unsung heroes that have stepped up to the challenge. Last year alone, according to DNR Statewide Recreational Vehicle Coordinator Bruce Lawrence, volunteer instructors taught 7,900 students between the ages of 12-15 and 2,500 adults born after December 31st, 1976. We owe all of you a huge debt of gratitude for your dedication to keep youth safe. For those that have taught students for over 30 years, we give a special salute in this issue of Milestones. we rode as soon as five years ago. With that being said, it’s us, the user, that bears responsibility to adhere to those fundamentals of safety, and responsibility to read all safety warnings provided by the manufacturers and other safety organizations.
Safety is always a concern when you have an object you are sitting on that can reach speeds of a hundred miles an hour in a short amount of time, and with multiple fixed objects surrounding you. Safety is, and has been, a concern for the snowmobiling consumer, manufacturer and those associated with the industry, for many decades and is a continuous learning and re-learning of safety protocols and the fundamentals of safe operation of snowmobiles. With technology in the manufacturer of snowmobiles, there have been major improvements, from what

Unfortunately, accidents still do happen for a myriad of reasons outside of our control, like weather conditions, and equipment design. For example, if your snowmobile has a reverse throttle, be sure you are aware of its positioning. If your throttle is positioned in a grab motion verses a push motion, it could have fatal consequences. Know the operation of your snowmobile and be as safe as you can be every time you go out, make safety a priority. As we promote Snowmobile Safety Week January 14th thru the 22nd, we want to remind snowmobilers of the information available to you, and how you can be a safe and responsible snowmobiler.

Region 8 Destination
by Ted Breeggemann, Reg 8 President
MnUSA Region 8 represents the snowmobilers in the West Metro counties of Carver, Hennepin and Scott. The three trail associations (Southwest Trails–Carver; Northwest Trail Development Association–Hennepin; Sno-Trails, Inc.–Scott) and their local clubs, maintain nearly 500 miles of trail for the 12,000+ registered snowmobile owners who report our counties have the trails they use the most.
Our largest landowner is Three Rivers Parks with an estimated 70 miles of trail in six of their parks. Our clubs also maintain trails for the DNR in the Minnesota River bottoms and a portion of the Luce Line State Trail. Our trail system is dependent on the generosity of hundreds of private landowners and, in the urban setting, reroutes are necessary each season due to development and trespass. Please stay on the marked trail. Come check out our interconnected trail systems. Park ‘n Ride locations are indicated on our trail maps.
Our region, with our clubs in fairly close proximity, is fortunate to be able to work on projects together, from swap meets to snow shows to fundraisers for Toys for Tots. To encourage participation, we try to keep things interesting and fun. Region 8 meets on the third Tuesday of the month from September through May at the Minnetonka Davanni’s. All MnUSA members in our region are welcome to participate. Check the MnUSA website for meeting times.
Our summer meeting generally is a picnic or a dinner cruise on Lake Minnetonka.

n Southwest Trails
Southwest Trails (SWT) was formed in 1991 by the Westonka, South Tonka, Carver County Waconia, SnoHawks Chaska and Eden Prairie Snowmobile Clubs.
In the beginning, with a little over 40 miles of trail, they purchased a Tucker snow groomer with funds from their DNR GIA grant. Eventually, SWT was able to purchase a newer Tucker with funds from their DNR grant. Currently, SWT has a Tucker groomer and a New Holland tractor with tracks that SWT purchased with money raised through fundraising efforts.
About 12 years ago, SWT added about 40 more miles of trail to their trail system. Currently, it maintains a little over 80 miles of trail in Carver County, Minnesota. Our installed sign count is over 2,000 signs. There is also a roundabout with a lit signage board in the Augusta area.
In the past, SWT would disk all the trails in the fall before frost but with all the smaller farmers disappearing it was getting more difficult to accomplish this because of the larger farm operations timing getting their crops out and plowing done in time. Three years ago, SWT purchased a trail processer that has a hydraulic driven beater on the front that crumbles and levels the frozen or dry dirt. There is a 4-foot-high metal wheel on the back that smooths out the trail, leaving about a 3-inch impression in the dirt; two passes leaves about a 16-foot-wide trail for the snow to gather in. SWT purchased a second processor so they can go with two at a time; it takes about 30 hours combined to process all the trails.
Once or twice a year, weather dependent, SWT sponsors a meet and greet at one of their two trail shanty’s to promote membership, serving hotdogs and pop. SWT also has an informational booth at the Carver County Fair every year. Over the last 31 years SWT has installed bridges and culverts, cut trees and met with many landowners to get permission or resolve issues to keep this trail system going.
One of our future goals is to acquire a building or storage shed to put our equipment in year around and/or a possible meeting facility incorporated within. This may draw new members. Currently we store equipment outside in the winter and inside in summer rental spaces.
In the past, SWT was a huge part of the Midwest Vintage Show that was held on Lake Waconia. The area clubs would receive a portion of the income for their involvement. The event is now held in Elk River and the local clubs there are getting more involved.
SWT members are a very devoted and family-orientated group with many talents that work well together to achieve whatever task is at hand to keep this club strong and moving forward. One of the biggest challenges, as with any other club, is attracting newer and younger members. (There is a lot of grey hair on the board!) It’s also an ongoing struggle with the communities getting bigger to move trails to accommodate their housing needs. With all this being said, SWT has a very unique and well-maintained trail system that goes through the scenic country fields as much as possible to avoid housing conflicts. The group that heads this up has a lot of history behind them and has a great bunch of volunteers!

Club: Chaska SnoHawks
The Chaska SnoHawks was established 52 years ago in 1970 by a group of local snowmobilers and has made giving back to the community a foundational part of the club. Each year, the club holds a charitable benefit for a local person or family in need, usually to assist with mounting medical expenses. The entire club gets involved with planning and oversight from two incredible, dedicated, benefit coordinators the past 10 years— Cindy Dauwalter and Mary Olson. They, together with the other club volunteers, have made an incredible impact to the beneficiaries, raising thousands of much-needed dollars.
How it works:
• Each year, the members of the SnoHawks bring forth a nomination for a recipient with a small article of support that is read to the club members, and is usually presented at the November club meeting. The club then votes on who the recipient will be for that year.
• The benefit consists of an all-you-can-eat chili feed, a snowmobile/UTV ride (depending on snow levels), a huge silent auction, and raffles. All donations for the auction and raffles come from club members, family members of the recipient, friends of the recipient and the community— including many local businesses.

• Leading up to the big day, club members work hard on collecting auction items, selling raffle tickets, planning the auction/raffle logistics, making chili and planning the snowmobile/ UTV ride, in honor of the recipient.
• The day of the event starts with the snowmobile/ UTV ride. Once everyone returns from the ride, we start the chili feed, silent auction, and the raffle drawings. It’s one of the most exciting events the club does for the community. 100% of the money made at the event goes directly to the recipient and family.
The event takes place the first Saturday in March; this year’s event is Saturday March 4th, 2023. Items already donated include a 55” Samsung TV, king size handmade quilt, two $500 Visa gift cards, Yeti cooler, 36” Blackstone grill, snowblower, MyPillow queen size bed, and the ever-popular booze buggy.
The Chaska SnoHawks has been helping the community with over 20 years of benefits, and for community members that have suffered immensely, including those who have had cancer, a snowmobile accident, cochlear implants, chromosome deletion syndrome, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, spinal surgery, leukemia and may other ailments. And are you ready for the monetary amount raised? Over $ 400,000.00! That’s right, this club of 70 members has raised over $400,000 for those in need in the community. This exemplifies how the Chaska SnoHawks goes above and beyond to serve others as a foundational part of the club’s culture.
Club: CARVER COUNTY SNOWRUNNERS
The Carver County Snowrunners is a social club started in 1988 by Bob Ritzschke under the name of the Waconia/ St.BoniSnowrunners. The first member was Bill Kullberg, President of MnUSA at the time, and followed by Al and Gene Koenig, and in 1989, Scott Wakefield and Todd Kuntz. In 1990, the name changed to the Carver County Snowrunners better representing where the members were coming from which was Norwood Young America, New Germany, Mayer, Cologne, Victoria, in addition to St. Boni and Waconia, basically most of Carver County.

Looking to build some money in the checking account, and working with the local Arctic Cat Dealer, Metz Sports of Victoria, Scott Wakefield and Pat Metzdorff started having a conversation about holding a radar run on Steiger Lake in Victoria. It finally came to fruition and, after 2 years of successful racing, the thought changed to moving the races to Lake Waconia and the Lakeside Ballroom site.
At the same time, a little know vintage show, named the Midwest Ride-In, was getting a large response of snowmobilers to attend their event at Nancy’s Landing, a restaurant/bar on Lake Waconia. Soon after a fax was sent by a guy named John Zeglin to Scott Wakefield, the President of the Snowrunners, an idea to bring both events together was hatched, and so it became the Waconia Ride In. Started in 1999, with Scorpion being the featured snowmobile, the event became the largest fundraiser for the club, and, although it has moved to ERX Park in Elk River, it still is the largest fundraiser the club has today. Today, the club has 180 members and, in addition to volunteering to help with the Midwest Ride-In, the club volunteers to help Southwest Trails put their trails in and around Carver County.

n NORTHWEST Trails
The Northwest Trails Development Association (NWT) has been in operation for nearly 50 years and maintains over 150 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the northwest suburbs of Hennepin County. NWT is a snowmobile club and also a trail association supporting several additional clubs including the Maple Plain Snomads, Loretto Sno Birds, and the Hamel SnoRunners, which is the second oldest incorporated snowmobile club in Minnesota.
NWT has over 200 paid members and cooperates with over 90 local business sponsors. They also take great pride in the many opportunities provided to engage the local community through events. NWT meetings are held the 1st Tuesday of every month at the Medina Entertainment and Event Center. To prepare for the season every year, the clubs hold several trail preparation events in the fall where members get together to put signs out on the trail, remove brush and obstructions from the trail, and take care of any equipment that needs maintenance. Throughout the year, NWT and its clubs also host several official Minnesota DNR sponsored Snowmobile Safety Training courses that are open to all. Once the official sledding season is underway, you can join the club for a number of organized trips and fundraisers including the yearend Snowmobile Softball game held in Corcoran.

NWT offers an extensive network of trails groomed frequently by one of two Tucker Snocats. Snowmobile softball game.
Club: HAMEL SNO RUNNERS annual softball game — by Dick Theis
The Annual Snowmobile softball game between the NWT clubs Hamel Sno Runners and Loretto Snowbirds dates back to 1969. It all started in a Hamel hayfield on a Sunday afternoon with the two clubs, family and friends enjoying a day of fun and entertainment.
The game is played just like a softball game but with snowmobiles and a few modifications. For instance, a kitten ball is used instead of a softball and traffic cones are used to mark the bases. The pitcher, catcher and umpire are the only players who don’t have a snowmobile. They are on foot and in the early years were required to wear snow shoes, excluding the umpire. The pitcher has a circle around the mound and is not able to go outside the circle and the catcher is not allowed inside the base line. Players in the field have to be touching their snowmobiles when catching or throwing the ball, and throwing a kitten ball with snow gloves is definitely a challenge.
The batters stand at home plate with their sled turned off. They hit the ball, start their sled and head to the cone on first base. Starting sleds back in the old days proved to be challenging, not to mention that the catcher was known to have a little fun from time to time by hitting the kill switch when the batter wasn’t looking. If the batters overrun first base, they are committed to heading for second base, as back in the old days reverse wasn’t an option.
Annual softball game.
The game has changed some over the years. Now the field is groomed to make seeing the ball easier, as trying to find a ball in deep snow can be difficult. The offset to that is now the ball can roll forever, which creates its own problem when you have to be touching your sled when retrieving the ball. Some years due to poor snow conditions, we’ve moved the game to a lake or had to cancel due to snow melting in late February/early March.
Over the years there may have been lots of arguments over calls, but no major crashes. But more importantly, this has been a great family fun day. In recent years, a trail stop has been added which has been a great fundraiser and gotten new members to the clubs. The fans help make each game a success, and after the game is done, the players and fans enjoy the food, beverages and bonfire, while reminiscing of the game just played and past years.

SNOW DRIFTERS
The Eden Prairie Snow Drifters snowmobile club was founded in 1971 and is a family friendly, social club for snowmobilers with about 45 members. Club members are from across the Twin Cities metro and some from as far away as Park Rapids and Cloquet. Members range in age from teenagers to people in their eighties and everything in between. We have members who have been riding for many years and those that are new to sledding. We have a nice mix of women and men, couples, singles, families, and friends.
Meetings are held the first Monday of the month, October through March. A Fall Kick-off, Spring Fling, Holiday Party and off-season summer events are also planned.
The club organizes about four rides a year, most in central and northern Minnesota. Larger club rides are split up into smaller groups based on riding skill, length of day, and destinations. Smaller groups within the club sometimes plan rides to Michigan, Wyoming, Montana, and even Canada. Impromptu day rides happen when there is good local snow.
Club members volunteer their time at the annual Midwest Ride-in and Winter Rendezvous. The club sponsors a vet for the Veterans Appreciation Ride and also donates to charitable organizations such as Toys for Toys and People Reaching Out to People.
All are welcome to join the club or attend any of our rides and events. We can be contacted on Facebook at facebook. com/edenprairiesnowdrifters or by email: epsnowdrifters@ yahoo.com.

n SNO-TRAILS
by Tim Pommier
Sno-Trails is in Scott County (southwest twin cities area) and part of MNUSA Region 8. Every year on the second Sunday of July we host a Landowners Appreciation Picnic for our 465 landowners that graciously allow our club to put 250 miles of trail on their land. We also use this event to get our trail permits signed by the landowners. 2022 was our 48th annual event.
We cook 900 pounds of chicken (yes, nine-hundred), 30 gallons of basting sauce (secret homemade recipe), 140 pounds of potato salad, 99 pounds of coleslaw, 120 pounds of Captain Ken’s beans, 15 pounds of butter and 42 dozen buns. We also serve liquid refreshments. Desserts are donated by our four local clubs which make up Sno-Trails.
We have 18 grills that are 2’ x 3’, use 400 pounds of charcoal and 16 quarts of lighter fluid. Chicken is picked up at Cub Foods in Shakopee that morning and the first grill has chicken on it by 7am. We start serving food at 11am until 2pm, and are completely cleaned up generally by about 4pm.

Club: RIVER VALLEY TRAIL BLAZERS
by Heather Berndt
The River Valley Trail Blazers Club was formed in 1969 and was originally known as the Shakopee Fastracks Snowmobile Club. The name of the club changed to River Valley Trail Blazers (RVTB) around 1993. RVTB is part of the four trailgrooming association club called Sno-Trails Inc. in Scott County. In the late 1970s, RVTB became a part of Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association.
Scott County has approximately 250 miles of Grant-in-Aid trails. Our picturesque trail along the Minnesota River is one of a kind. Its scenic miles wind along the bluffs of the river and are truly one of the most beautiful trails in Minnesota to ride. Unfortunately, the flooding of the river over many years makes for a lot of work for multiple volunteers to clear the trail each upcoming season so snowmobiles can pass. We are fortunate to have Lano’s Equipment help sponsor our cleanup of downed trees, washed-out land, sand dunes, and debris removal each year. Somewhere between 20 to 50 volunteers head down the 35 miles of trail from Shakopee to Belle Plaine to clean up and get it “ready for the season.”
Recently, there has been a lot of work done in collaboration with the MN DNR, as some of the trail has washed into the river. With continued advocating for the trail, and work with the US Fish & Wildlife, we have worked to open the trail fully after being partially closed for several years. It is not uncommon to see eagles, deer, and other wildlife while riding along the river trail.
RVTB is a group of 80 snowmobile families all with the common goal and love of promoting snowmobiling.
We meet monthly on the first Wednesday of the month (September-April). We plan not only local rides when Mother Nature allows, but out-of-town club trips. We fundraise in our local community to support our club and try to do other community activities such as adopt a highway, youth training, local parades, and winter meet and greets.
Club: SAVAGE SNO-PACERS
by Tom Wills
The Savage Sno-Pacers was formed in 2004. The City of Savage was proposing to make it illegal to drive snowmobiles with in the city limits. Word got out to a few dedicated snowmobilers—Jim Rinsem and Tom (Digger) Anderson— who we consider our founding fathers. They made and put signs up on street corners and knocked on a bunch of doors to spread the word to show up at a meeting at City Hall to voice our concerns about banning snowmobiling in Savage. Over 100 people showed up; we packed the Chambers. The Savage Sno-Pacers Club was born that night.

The Club and the City then created an agreement to work together to put in designated trails within the city limits. These 25 miles of trails are mostly on city sidewalks. This agreement was initially only for a trial period. I am happy to say that this agreement is still in place today. There are currently 48 families in the Savage Sno-Pacers. We meet at the Savage Legion on the third Wednesday of the month.
The Savage Sno-Pacers organizes several FUN club trips each year which have been very well attended. The SnoPacers is one of the four clubs that make up the Scott County Sno-Trails Organization that owns and maintains all of the grooming equipment that grooms the 250 miles of trails in Scott County.
Club: NEW MARKET SNOMADS
by Justin Warren
The New Market Snomads snowmobile club was started by a few vintage snowmobile-loving people. It all started in 2014, when a couple of the founding members met up on old iron at a local watering hole. Unbeknownst to those few people, the club would blossom. It was the next year, in 2015, that the club would start with the 12 founding members and first snowmobile show. Now with 40 to 50 members on our roster, we are going strong. Club dues include a membership in MnUSA which works with the DNR to develop and maintain the trail system throughout the state, and lobby the legislature to protect the sport of snowmobiling, all the while creating fellowship and socialization opportunities for members regarding all aspects of the snowmobiling hobby.
The club organized and maintains the ‘Snomad Spur’—a snowmobile trail that cuts through New Market. The Snomad Spur not only supports local businesses by providing trail access, it also keeps machines off the sidewalks and CR2 throughout the downtown area. We also support N.E.W. Lions and Hope for Community food shelf. We have a yearly snowmobile show and party in January that attracts a great number of 2000 and older sleds (with a couple of the members high horsepower mountain sleds thrown in). With free entry, door prizes and trophies, this is always a good time.
You can find our information at New Market Snomads on Facebook or email us at nmsnomads@gmail.com. read more on REGION 8 »

Club: PRIOR LAKE SNOWMOBILE ASSOCIATION
Prior Lake Snowmobile Association (PLSA) was formed in the late 1960s and started working on a snowmobile trail system for local snowmobilers. PLSA became a non-profit club in 1971, and continued developing its trail system through public and private landowners. These trails were only used by club members only.
In the early 1970s, PLSA and two other snowmobile clubs in Scott County formed Sno-Trails, Inc., a trail-grooming association, and continued to expand a connected snowmobile trail system throughout Scott County. In 1978, when the snowmobile clubs in Minnesota formed the Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association, PLSA was the first club in Scott County to join this group and started linking its trail system with the others in all of Minnesota. MnUSA, and its member clubs like PLSA, today maintain more than 21,600 miles of snowmobile trails in Minnesota.
Sno-Trails Inc., and their four member clubs, including PLSA, install and maintain a 250 mile snowmobile Grant in Aid trail system through all of Scott County and some of the southern part of Carver County. Each club is responsible to maintain a great relationship with our private landowners, and install,
maintain, and groom their club’s portion of this county wide trail system.
Since the early 1980s, PLSA has had a task force with the City of Prior Lake staff, the Prior Lake Police Department, Scott County Sheriff, and MN DNR conservation officers, to work together to resolve snowmobile issues in the city and surrounding areas.
PLSA is a group of 115 snowmobile families working together to provide and maintain snowmobiling opportunities throughout Scott County for all of the more than 6000 registered snowmobiles in Scott County using our trail systems. We meet monthly on the second Wednesday of the month and plan local and out of town club snowmobile rides, and other fun activities for our members.

Merrifield Marathons to Hold Open House
Once again, this snowmobile season, snow permitting, the Merrifield Marathons Snowmobile Club will be holding an Open House at its clubhouse located along the Paul Bunyan Trail in Merrifield, MN. The date is Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 11am to 2pm. Last year’s event was well attended with 90 to 100 visitors. You are invited to stop by to enjoy complimentary food and beverages while you learn about the club and its charitable support in the local community. Ask about snowmobiling in the Brainerd Lakes area, or warm yourself at the trailside bonfire or take a tour of the
clubhouse and the grooming equipment used to maintain the club’s wonderful trails. They are easy to find right on the Paul Bunyan Trail (look for the signs) and have plenty of room for parking your sleds.
If you can’t make it to the clubhouse that day, they will also have a fire going at their recently renovated trailside shelter (which includes a clean, handicap-sized porta-potty) and invite you to stop by the shelter anytime during the snowmobile season to warm yourselves up and maybe even meet new friends. Watch for updates or contact them through the Merrifield Marathons Facebook page if you have any questions. They look forward to meeting you!
