Are you? I sure hope you are, because that’s what we need you to do to make this whole “snowmobile” thing work in Minnesota. While in the MnUSA booth in Kasson the other day, MnUSA membership volunteers Ray E., Paul M., Mike C., Cheryl C., and I focused on business supporters. We stuffed close to 400 and some odd amount of Business Supporters renewal notices. Hopefully, they will, “do their share” when they get it and renew. And with new enhanced website capabilities on the horizon, that will get them more bang for the buck!
Coming off a strong El Niño winter with virtually no snow throughout the upper Midwest, Mother Nature is “doing her share” by transitioning into a La Niña. This
traditionally means colder than average temperatures, and snowier than average snowfall, especially in northwest Minnesota which is in MnUSA’s Region 1, parts of Region 2 and Region 9, and the northern tip of Region 3.
VP Harder talked about caution signs in his last article. I brought this subject up in a seminar by Kim Raap, facilitated by me at the Fall Workshop last year. The position of the DNR is that they are NOT going to redo caution signs to be more specific so it’s up to the clubs. It’s a good way to be more specific, of what that caution area is, and could save you money in the long run. I’ll provide some examples at this year’s Fall Workshop and at a later time.
Polaris has sent out another Safety Recall Notice to affected members. The key to this is there may or may not be a sticker in the envelope to add to your sled. Affix it now while it is still nice out, and then there’s a replacement page for your owner’s manual. Do this BEFORE you start your sled for the season. Fill the tank to the top with the recommend fuel type. Thanks to Polaris for “doing their share” to help explain the importance of this change.
And finally, your Constitutional right to vote. Voting started back as far as Mesopotamia times around 3000 BC, and became part of the American vernacular in 1787, so you don’t think your vote counts? Well, Rutherford Hayes was elected president of the United States by 1 vote. The ability to vote has been given to us by those brave folks that fought for our freedoms, but the decision to vote rests with you. Honor those veterans and for those that gave it all, by “Doing Your Share” and go and vote. Hopefully our candidate survey will help you make your decision on who to vote for. Vote for Snowmobiling and “Do Your Share”.

With the cool fall temperatures comes the anticipation for change. As clubs start to meet and trail work is being done, the excitement builds. Let’s hope that this year all the clubs and trail associations’ hard work does not go to waste.
Now is also the time to begin recruiting members. Maybe try an open house at your club house or, if you can, arrange to be at a local dealer to catch those enthusiast snowmobilers who don’t belong to a club. It only takes a couple of hours to volunteer for this event and may just create additional excitement.
The Fall Workshop also created some excitement for our organization. As a director for your region, you are the driving force behind our membership. It is hoped that people can see the excitement you generate when speaking about our organization. Although it has been said a thousand times, invite people to attend a meeting so they understand why we are passionate when it comes to snowmobiling as well as snowmobiling issues.
The message needs to be loud and clear that VOLUNTEERS maintain the trails, put in the trails, get landowner permission and groom the trails.
We need to show people the benefits of belonging to MnUSA. That being said, the E-Board is looking for ideas on possibly rethinking our “Why Join A Club” worksheet. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Please text or email a member of the E-Board. Let’s put our thinking caps on and think about why you yourself belong. We all know it is the RIGHT THING TO DO, belonging to a club, we just need those non-members to understand that the $35 it takes goes a long way to support our organization.
Remember these future members could also be the future of our organization. Reach out and invite a friend to your club events.

Every time I sit down to write this article, I never really know what I should be writing about. However, yesterday I received a call from a friend who is a member of a club near Maple Plain, MN, asking for clarification on what I talked about last month on signing of trails. So, that got me thinking. First of all, everything I stated last month about signing was just for general purposes.
On the use of caution signs, while I was the safety committee chairperson for MnUSA, I spoke to a few attorneys that have dealt with lawsuits pertaining to accidents on the snowmobile trails in MN and they stated some of the minor things that can create big problems in litigation. For example, a caution sign with no explanation to what the hazard is, is why they suggested to me to have something on the sign stating what the caution is, whether it’s rocks, a deep ditch, open water, etc.
Then as I drive around the entire state of MN, I see areas where every driveway has a caution sign marking culverts. It is your choice to do that, however, most people see so many caution signs that they start to ignore them. That’s why the attorneys and I suggested reassurance markers (diamonds) in such a case. Again, it’s up to your club or trail association to make the judgment call on how you want to sign those types of things.
The attorneys have told me that in these cases in court, one of the first things they see from the suing side is the IASA Trail signing guidelines (https://www.snowiasa. com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/IASA-SigningGuidelines-2014.pdf) that anyone can download from the internet. We even have it available on the MnUSA website. Hint that is a good place to start if you want to assure that your trail is signed properly. It is only a guide and you and your landowners need to make the best judgment calls on how to mark hazards on the trail.
So, by the time you are reading this, we will have had the Fall Conference which was held at the Black Bear Casino and Resort in Carlton, MN. I’m truly hoping that we saw each other there and are starting to look forward to the Winter Rendezvous in February (6th-9th) at Hampton Inn and Suites in Bemidji, MN. Honestly, I look forward to the VIP ride every year so please come and join us; let’s have a great time talking about snowmobiling and riding with our VIPs. You still have time to register at a discounted rate if you do it before 12-31-24.
We still need regions to be thinking ahead and submit your proposals to the site committee for future events. Please don’t wait till the last minute. Let’s get the upcoming year’s plans started now. It takes a ton of work planning these events for fall and winter.
Think snow…. hope to see you soon at one of our events!
Christian Franzen
As I reflect on the past year and what is to come in 2025, I am both tense and hopeful. This is because at the time I am writing, this election of President, US Representative, US Senator, State House, and so on hasn’t occurred and Vikings are still undefeated. There are too many variables to say with any certainty what the future will bring. What I do know to be true is that elections will lead to changes and all of us working together as MnUSA, will continue to provide the best snowmobiling for the state of Minnesota.
The Minnesota Legislature will be entering a new biennium in January starting from square (or bill) one. There are newly elected representatives to introduce ourselves to just as there are veteran legislators we must reintroduce ourselves to. Our engagement with our legislators is always one of
the most important parts of our organization. If you’ve had the same legislator for decades, make sure they remember about the importance of their local clubs and our partnership with and gratitude to landowners across the state. If you have a new legislator invite them to a club event or explain the decades of youth safety training and how that work directly promotes the overall safety of the sport and, as we know, safety is fundamental to MnUSA. Every one of our legislators should also understand:
• How and why our grant-in-aid system is essential to snowmobiling.
• The economic benefits of snowmobiling to the State of Minnesota
• The remarkable leveraging of dollars due to our volunteer labor.
• The enhancement of Minnesota’s quality of life and promotion of outdoor recreation
• The volunteer culture of Minnesota’s snowmobile clubs.
And, if by chance, the newly elected or reelected have partisan concerns, remind them our Grant-in-aid system was created under the leadership of the DFL and preserved through the years of deficit and recession by the GOP. We are an organization made up of democrats, republicans, and independents which works with the state to generate millions in tax revenues and facilitate more miles in groomed trails than anywhere else in the nation. One of our main strengths as an organization is we don’t need partisanship to show our legislators what an asset our sport is to Minnesota.
The 2025 legislature begins on January the 14th. Before these individuals come to Saint Paul, I would encourage us all to reach out to our elected officials and offer our MnUSA priorities, or our MnUSA history, or how our sport impacts the constituencies of the legislators. This is what makes me so optimistic for the coming legislative year. I am optimistic because we have over 40 years of bipartisan support in leading the nation in snowmobiling here in Minnesota, that is 40 years of moving the sport forward victory after victory. Keep in mind the tension I noted in the first sentence is solely about the Vikings and my 40 years of experience watching them
Before each Minnesota election MNUSA sends out a list of questions to all those running, incumbents and challengers alike. We do this to get to know our candidates and where they stand on the issues most imperative to the survival of our organization. As you may note we receive a wide range of answers from across Minnesota. If your legislator is not listed, don’t hesitate to reach out yourself. And make sure to attend our Legislative Reception in St. Paul this coming legislative session!
The sport of snowmobiling has a huge economic impact on Minnesota and is responsible for tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue each year (excluding payroll and income taxes). Do you agree that snowmobiling is an essential part of Minnesota’s economic health, quality of life and tourism industry?
The Snowmobile Dedicated Account is funded by the snowmobile registration tax and unrefunded gas tax attributed to snowmobile use. Under current law, funds in the account may be spent only for snowmobile purposes. Will you oppose any effort to divert funds from the Snowmobile Dedicated Account for non-snowmobiling purposes?
Will you resist any legislative attempt to reduce the 1% unrefunded gas tax allocated to the snowmobile dedicated fund?
Minnesota enjoys one of the finest snowmobile trail system in the country, if not the world. Over 21,000 miles of trails have been developed and are maintained by volunteers in local communities under the grant in aid program. Additionally, the State has developed and maintains approximately 900 miles of popular State corridor trails. Will you support at least 60% of the user fees paid by snowmobilers (registration and unrefunded gas tax) be earmarked for local grant in aid trails?
Do you support a portion of the Parks and Trails Legacy Funds to go to trails that benefit snowmobiling?
Will you support efforts to protect and accommodate trail crossings for new publicly funded rail developments (both light and heavy rail)?
Inflation has dramatically increased the cost of fuel and building materials necessary to develop, maintain and groom Minnesota’s snowmobile trails for the public benefit. Local volunteer snowmobile clubs are tasked with doing this work. Do you support a sales tax exemption for building materials used to construct and maintain snowmobile trails (for example, a bridge replacement)?
Will you help our members show support for this great sport through a legislation creating the Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association special automobile plates?
Do you have any other ideas on how to achieve adequate funding for Minnesota’s snowmobile trails?

Congratulations to Mike Hetteen for his induction into the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame (ISHOF) as a representative of industry and as a volunteer/club organizer.
Snowmobiling has been a part of Mike’s life since he was born. Growing up in the “Polaris family” created the opportunity for him to learn and experience the sport from its early beginnings into what it is today. His childhood memories of Polaris go back as far as 1967. It was this very early era of snowmobiling when his father, Allan Hetteen would bring him along to all the major snowmobile shows, give a very young boy the task on checking out the booths of other sled manufacturers and report his findings to his father. By the early to mid-seventies, Mike worked many hours after school at his father’s Polaris Distributorship preparing parts to ship to dealers. As an adult, Mike worked for Polaris thirty-six years in various positions. Mike retired from Polaris in 2016.
much of his personal time building relationships with like-minded folks who formed the Roseau County Trailblazers. Mike was the driving force behind the development of this organization with its origins dating back to 1987. They believed in the need to have active snowmobile clubs to keep the sport alive and growing. That same mind set was adopted years earlier by his father Allan and uncles Edgar Hetteen and David Johnson.
Although Mike’s occupation was based on the snowmobile industry, when not at work he dedicated
As a volunteer club organizer and trail developer, he spearheaded the CAN-AM International Snowmobile Trail in 1990, working with government officials from both Minnesota and Manitoba and Sno-Man, the Manitoba Snowmobile Association. This trail goes from Roseau, MN to Falcon Lake, Manitoba, approximately 100 miles, setting the stage for the first snowmobile trail crossing the US/Canadian border. It is still in place today. Mike has always felt the continuing need to be involved in snowmobile organizations on a local, state, national and international level. He also served as a MnUSA director for several years.
The International Snowmobile Hall of Fame (ISHOF) headquartered in Eagle River, WI, was founded in 1988 as a vision of Elmer Cone of Bovey, MN, to promote and preserve the historical aspects of snowmobiling. Cone recruited like-minded individuals and together they created a program to recognize individuals that were instrumental in the success of the snowmobile recreation industry. The vision of the charter ISHOF Board, Elmer Cone, Les Ollila, Clem Lehrer, Rich Beckner and Paul Vanderlinde, was to recognize achievements of individuals in all aspects of snowmobiling that have been instrumental in the development of snowmobiling to the level it now enjoys.
The first awards ceremony was held in 1990 in Grand Rapids, MN. In 2009 the headquarters for the ISHOF was moved from Bovey, MN, to Eagle River, WI.
ISHOF’s recognition categories include inventors/ designers, explorers/adventurers, trail and program developers, publishers/journalists, and volunteer and club organizers. Over the past 34 years, of the nearly 150 individuals have been inducted into the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame for their achievements for the sport of snowmobiling, 70 of those individuals were recognized for their volunteerism, without whom snowmobiling would not have achieved the organizational level it has attained.
Minnesota, often referred to as the home of snowmobiling with two snowmobile manufacturers within its borders, is well represented in ISHOF with 40 inductees, including representatives of snowmobile manufacturing Edgar Hetteen, David Johnson, Roger Skime, William Ness, Allan Hetteen, Richard Harrison, Ed Skomoroh, Lowell Swenson, Marlys Knutson and Willliam Dean; explorers and adventurers Ralph Plaisted, Scott Eilertson and Norman Lee Busse, Walter
Pederson, Jim Langley and Clark Dahlin; journalists C.J. Ramstad, Jerry Bassett, John Ehlert, John Prusak and photojournalist Wayne Davis; trail and program developers DeLyle Pankratz and Les Ollila; and volunteers/club organizers Larry Koch, Jack Schulz, Bob Clough, Elmer Wm. Cone, Jerry and Nancy Hanson, Bob and Judy King, Les Pinz, Bob and Marie Linn, Larry Shepherd, Jack Hausner, Greg Sorenson, Dave Guenther, Terry Hutchinson and Mike Hetteen.
For more information on the ISHOF and its inductees, visit its website www.ishof.com or visit in person at the ISHOF’s venue at the World Snowmobile Headquarters located on Hwy 45 in Eagle River, WI.

Snowmobiling lost a great hero of the sport when Michael “Burl” Ives passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at his home on Pokegama Lake. Burl was a great conversationalist; get him on a topic and then let him run and provide a different viewpoint. He was quick to correct you, and very convincingly so. In other words, he knew his stuff.
Burl had such an interesting life, starting with working beside his father in the many family businesses and then breaking off into his own eatery, Burl’s Chicken and Burgers. He began his career in the hospitality industry in 1966 alongside his wife and off they went.
The Timberlake Lodge was a great home to many snowmobilers to start a wonderful weekend of riding and it was a special treat to have Burl stop by your table and ask how the food was, where are you riding tomorrow? Where are you from? When Levi Lavallee was in the room at the MnUSA Rendezvous a few years back, Levi was impressed on how wonderful Burl was and how successful his business had become.
Burl’s business expanded and added a wonderful location in Staples, MN. When MnUSA was in town, he made a special point to have his restaurant open and came out of the kitchen to say hi. He was always so gracious, and kind and wonderful to talk to. The snowmobiling community will miss Burl a lot. This will leave a huge void for many years to come.
Burl is survived by his wife of 26 years, Kristine, his daughter, Samanatha Marie Ives; his son Thomas Michael Ives; his mother Mary F. Ives, one sister, Michelle (Guy) Carlson, all residing in Grand Rapids, MN; also, many nieces and nephews; and many friends, relatives, and all of us in the snowmobile community. Blessed be his memory.
Marshall Rollr Blade is a trail roller with an adjustable blade, designed to pack deep/heavy snow on trails to create a base that lasts throughout the season. When used in conjunction with a drag, the end result is a smooth, packed trail.
• Roller saves you time and fuel.
• Easy to operate.
• Sideways-slide protection for side-hill trails.
• Hydraulically controlled blade in front of the roller drags snow along and levels bumps before the roller packs the trail surface.
• Roller is made of 3/8” thick x 36” diameter pipe.
• Hydraulically controlled wheels lift the entire unit off the ground for transporting on surfaces other than snow, if needed.

What a great Swap and Show the River City Snow Riders Snowmobile Club put on Saturday Oct.5th at the vast Sherburne County Fairgrounds, close to one of the Elk River water towers, right past Ralphie’s gas station. Admission was $5.00 but, if you are a MnUSA member, you get in for FREE! Swappers started rolling in before 6:30 a.m.; general admission gates opened at 8 a.m., with a raffle drawing for cash prizes held at 2:30 p.m. It was a bit chilly with an expected 30-35 mile per hour breeze out of the south, so a warm hoodie was the best, but you know it never got that windy.
I’ve been to many a swap and show over the years, but what impressed me with this one, is the large number of buyers. Some were also swappers, but the majority came to buy. And as a vendor, that’s what you want to hear and see. Most all of the vendors I talked to were very happy, and had been coming for years. Again, a trend we have been seeing is snowmobile related items, but also non-snowmobile related items, for sale.
It takes an army of volunteers to put a show on of this size, and the River City Snow Riders were and are up to the challenge. Great food, great discussions, and especially, great crowds, made this event stand out. Most of those attending were from within an hour of the event, so having a swap and show in the metro area, you are going to draw a fair amount of folks. MnUSA booth was busy again, selling calendars and giving away DNR quadrant maps. Unfortunately, no renewals or new members were sold but that’s why they make next year. Count me in!

The Great Southern Minnesota Swap Meet and Vintage Sled Show was held on Sunday, September 29th at the Kasson Fairgrounds in the little town of Kasson, MN. Put on by the Kasson-Mantorville Snowdrifters, this is one of the best southern Minnesota shows, and replaced the popular Snow Bears Great Southern Grass Drags from years before.
Continuing with Minnesota’s wonderful sunny and 70-degree fall of 2024, the show had wonderful weather, a wonderful showing of vintage and current sleds, and clothing for sale all day. With lots of swappers selling their wares, from snowmobile related to not always snowmobile related, either way the quality of swap items was supreme. I picked up some very nice items (thanks Rick) for my growing collection.
Speaking of growing, who can go to a swap/show and go hungry? Not me. Great food was plentiful all day, and the refreshment garden had the Vikings game on to boot. We had good representation from MnUSA Region 5, with Directors Brad and Paul, and President Mike and wife Cheryl. Thanks to all for manning the booth. They sold a fair number of calendars and renewal memberships. Thanks to Ray and Paul for helping with the takedown of the booth. When I looked around, the K-M Snowdrifters had the site as clean or cleaner than they got it. It was very well organized and a really great show. If you get a chance make sure to put it on your list to attend next year.

I would like everyone to understand that the fundraising raffle calendar did and does not come with an instruction manual on how things can and can’t be done. We are learning as we go… so last month we had an order form in the magazine to buy a calendar. We have since found out
that we can NOT mail raffle tickets (stubs) via USPS nor can we advertise with an entry form attached since we mail the magazine via USPS. It truly is against federal law. So, we are making changes as we move forward. We can promote the raffle calendar and that is what we are going to do. Please reach out to your local club to get your calendar. We raised the payouts to over $20,000.00 and created more bigger winners this year to help promote sales.
Please understand that we all work full time jobs and that this stuff is on a volunteer basis, so please be patient with us as move forward. All clubs and trail associations will be getting instructions via e-mail and snail mail for the 2 clubs that don’t have an e-mail address on file with the office on how to return the sold ticket stubs to MnUSA, as you cannot mail those thru USPS either. We are still fully working on this but plan to send you a pre-paid shipping label so as to absorb the shipping cost by MnUSA instead of your club / trail association… We also have learned that we can no longer promote a tiered payback structure for the sale of the calendar, MN Gambling Control board and the MN IRS consider that compensation which is in fact illegal to do.
However, once all calendars are sold and we have raised money from the sale of the calendar we (MnUSA) can make a donation to the clubs and trail associations, so that is what we are going to do. We do this calendar to help clubs to raise money, we also have an agreement with the MN DNR to have one LG555 that will cover all clubs and trail associations that receive a donation, so you will no longer be required to do that yourself. Remember, the funds from this donation need to be used either for trail maintenance or education (youth training).
In order to receive the most in a donation we need all 5,500 calendars to sell so that we have more funds to donate. AGAIN, we appreciate all of you that participate in selling Raffle Calendars and want others to know it’s an easy way to raise funds for your club or trail association.
Please use this form as a guideline when submitting your club news for publishing in Minnesota Snowmobiling. It is not necessary to use this form (emails gladly accepted) but please make sure to include all pertinent contact information. Club News should be items of interest to the snowmobile community as a whole—sharing ideas about successful events held, trail projects and improvements, ways to promote membership growth, etc.
To accommodate all clubs wishing to submit their news, we ask that you submit a Club News article no more than two times a year, keeping the length of your article to around 250 words or less with a photo, and 500 or less without a photo. We encourage you to send high-resolution photos (300 dpi or greater) of your club’s activities, including captions describing the event and/or the people shown. If you have questions, please contact Scott Wakefield. All submissions due by 4 p.m. of deadline date.
