I’m Getting a Feeling

Can you feel it? For those of us with 50 years plus in this industry, it’s a “real familiar feeling” when we start to see the changes in the season, hitting the shows—in my case being at the shows in a booth—the slow ramp up to Dec. 1st, the trail prep, the smell of two stroke smoke, the cold wind from the north, and then that first snowfall. This year you can check those all off the list. That’s right, we have been blessed by mother nature with early snow, and it just gets the feeling of a great year coming; even more with seeing that snow blowing sideways, in the face, in the ear, down the back, you know.

Well, I have to tell you something. This was all predicted to a tee 90 days ago. NOAA’s National Weather Service stated, in fact, that the upper Midwest would experience a major change and likely snowfall on Halloween. Check.

Next, they are saying major storm Thanksgiving weekend. Will it happen? Who knows. They are batting 1,000 right now, but it’s early. In addition, a quiet—as far as snowfall—but cold December, a system coming thru midJanuary with snowfall, cold the last two weekends, and then, again according to NOAA, two major snowstorms Valentine’s weekend and the last week of February, and a spring surprise, April 20th snowfall. Again, we will see.

In my club at the first meeting of the season, we predict the snowfall for the year, winner gets a crisp hundo. I’ve predicted 66” inches. I saw a 101” on the list and 2”; well, that guys out. The rest of us are in the mix, and nobody besides the 2”, is under 49”. Again, we will see.

In this issue, for those that missed the very well attended Fall Workshop, I’ll get you there with my re-cap report; Don’t miss former Vice President Tim Heinen’s Milestones; Vintage News as the Midwest Ride In is around the corner; Racing News is back with an ISOC schedule release; and our favorite MnUSA Gift Ideas for this time of the season.

I thank you for all the nice comments on the magazine when I see you in person, or via email and phone. Merry Christmas to you and yours. May you have many snowmobile items under your tree this season as I’m starting to get a feeling, and it’s “ALL GOOD!”

A New Snow Season From the MnUSA President

Fellow snowmobiler, the season is upon us. As I write this article, the first snow of the season is falling— Halloween! It’s not another blizzard but it makes you wonder what the upcoming season will bring. Hopefully the groomers are ready as they were not used a lot for grooming last year. There is always trail work to be done no matter what kind of season we had the previous year.

Speaking of the previous year, we need to get those snowmobiles registered as soon as possible. According to the MN Department of Natural Resources (DNR) we ended last season with a very large shortfall in revenue. Only 48% of expired snowmobile registrations were renewed. This major shortfall has affected this year’s funding in the Grant In Aid system. Revenue for the gas tax, as well as the snowmobile registrations, goes into the Dedicated Snowmobile Fund. This in turns funds the Grant In Aid dollars. It is our hope that the sleds that didn’t get registered last year will not skip another year. This could be catastrophic to funding.

When a person does not register their snowmobile, it causes a downward affect to our clubs and trail associations. Last year alone caused a $3.15 million dollar deficit in the snowmobile account. That is almost half of our funding for GIA for the season.

MnUSA is working together with the DNR to try to make this less painful this year. In fact, that statement may prove to be NO Trail Improvement Grants this year. This has to be done so that clubs/trail associations can at least be paid for their grooming costs and per mile base level funding and also to stabilize the account.

I STRONGLY encourage everyone to get your snowmobiles registered and please do so every year. This is a major source of our GIA funding. We are counting on you to replenish that fund and to keep it stable by registering.

Another item that we will be trying to get caught up on is snowmobile safety training from last year. Many kids were able to take the classroom or online training but were unable to do the driving course. This will make for some large class sizes this fall/winter. The clubs I instruct are looking to have their regular class plus take care of last year’s participants. This could make for a large number of new snowmobilers when the snow does stay. This is also an opportunity to possibly grow membership for your club. These kids are the future of our sport and the future leaders of our organization. I encourage our membership to recruit one new member into MnUSA or your local MnUSA club/ trail association. Everyone knows someone who rides but does not belong to an organized club. Just think how fast our organization would grow if everyone did this.

We also need business membership. You, as a snowmobiler, know the places that you stop along the trail—gas stations, restaurants, bars, repair shops, dealerships, trailer sales and even your local grocery store. Tell them the benefits of being a business members Remind them that we are developing a new website and that the $100 cost will get them advertising on our website. Advertising can’t get much cheaper than that! If you buy from them, it is my hope that they will reciprocate and be willing to support us as MnUSA members.

From the MnUSA Vice President

Happy Halloween, as I’m sitting in my home office (Snow Day from work). WAIT, did I really just say that…. Yes, I did… Scrolling through Facebook and seeing all the memories from 1991’s Halloween Snowstorm and looking out the window at over 4” of heavy wet snow on the ground, is a welcome sight. Like many of you, I thought about firing up one of my sleds and doing a lap around the yard just to say I hit the first snow of the year. Although we do need some cold weather first, frost in the ground, swamps to freeze up and yes, the lakes need sufficient ice, not just for us snowmobilers, but ice fisherman too. All kidding aside, let’s have a safe and enjoyable season this year.

So, we just had the fall workshop, and it was nice to see many of you at the event in Carlton, MN at Black Bear Casino. Great facility, clean and comfortable; look forward to seeing it when the remodel is done. The band on Saturday night was very good and enjoyable to listen to. Wade and Laura from the DNR had some information for us regarding GIA. The bad news, only 48% of the sleds up for renewal last year renewed which hurts the general account balance. If you happen to be one of those people, please know that when you don’t renew your registration it can and will affect the GIA amount that the clubs get. We could possibly see a 6% cut this year and no supplement payments, along with a hold on Trail Improvement Grants. I get it, it was a brownout year last year and we didn’t get to ride much, if at all, However, the clubs and trail associations still have trail maintenance, groomer payments, insurance costs and the list goes on. If your registration is up for renewal, please renew at this time or, if you’re past due, please renew asap. Remember, sled renewals are June 30th each year and good for 3 years at a time.

We also had the officers’ election and I would like to say thank you for trusting me as your vice president and trusting the rest of the e-board to continue on for another year. Still a lot of things going on with upgrading the office, computer systems and how we track our financials, along with developing a new member management system and building a whole new website. We all would

like to snap our fingers, and all of this would be done but, in reality, it takes a lot of work and, in turn, a lot of time. We appreciate your patience as we work diligently to complete all these projects. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Kelli put on a great demonstration all afternoon Saturday on the new member management system. Hopefully you had a chance to attend. Feedback that I received was very positive and I was told that this system will work easier than most had imagined.

With that being said, I would like to extend an invite to as many of you as possible to join us at the ACSA (American Council of Snowmobile Associations) Riding Area Roundtable 2025 Trail Ride. This will be held in Tower, MN, at Fortune Bay Resort, Jan. 23rd – 26th.

Mention “ACSA” or “ID 2535” to get a discount rate on your room. Again, I’m reaching out to get as many as possible to attend the MnUSA Winter Rendezvous in February (6th – 9th) in Bemidji, MN, at the Hampton Inn & Suites. Register before Dec. 31st to get a discounted rate. Registration forms available online. I look forward to seeing you there! Think snow!

Legislative News

I remember as a kid that it’s hard to have a December birthday. Right after Thanksgiving and near the holidays, or possibly right before the new year, are all problematic. Who has the time or money for extra parties and gifts at the end of the year? I’ve already tried to explain this phenomenon to my son, who has a December birthday three days from mine. What will take him years to realize is that it’s the benevolence that becomes the real gift. And this is a fundamental principle of our organization.

At last month’s Fall Workshop there was significant discussion of snow. Last year’s lack of snow was

ESCAPE ESCAPE

revenue. Yet because of MnUSA’s ongoing negotiations and discussions with the DNR, sufficient funds were set aside to get us through this winter. DNR insisted on having a reserve in the snowmobile budget. The appropriate reserve amount was debated and the DNR ultimately succeeded in reserving enough money to get us through the upcoming winter. I am glad that the DNR (Laura, Andrew, and Wade) won the argument. However, what happens if a club needs additional help? The answer isn’t easy, but it is simple. We help each other! Whether it is equipment, time, manpower or events, we have a tradition of it. We are a volunteerbased association focusing on access, safety and communal outdoor recreation. And this is what we will be bringing to the state capital this coming legislative session.

Although it’s in my nature to say this is all legislative, it is not. MnUSA brings much more to Minnesota. We support MSEAF in the veterans’ snowmobile ride. We provide a network of safety instructors. We support various charities. Our clubs and regions build a sense of community. By hosting our quarterly meetings, these folks bring us together as one. One of my favorite things to tell a legislator is not how great Minnesota snowmobiling is but how we are able to get there as an association spread across the state with one common and ever-present goal of making trails safe and available. So, as we all spend this November/December registering our sleds let’s take a moment to reflect about all the great people who do the work for all of us.

And there is always legislative engagement. This requires member involvement as well as professional You are in a wonderful position to help make improved outdoor recreation public policy. All it takes is an email or a phone call to your legislator’s office to arrange a meeting, discuss MnUSA priorities, or extend an invitation to a club event. Make your legislative ideas and suggestions to myself and your legislator. Our snowmobilers thrive on giving time and energy to the sport every winter (white or brown) because we know when all the snow has settled, the real gift is found in knowing you helped create winter fun for our state.

FALL WORKSHOP 2024 RECAP

Full steam ahead, as we ground out another wellattended MnUSA Fall Workshop at the luxurious Black Bear Casino in Carlton, MN, right off 35W. After a wonderful late lunch at Pedro’s Grill and Cantina, just down from the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright designed gas station in downtown Cloquet, MN, the events started off with a Legislative/Trails meeting run by Legislative/ DNR/Trails Chairman Terry Hutchinson with assistance by lobbyist Doug Franzen.

First on the agenda was the Sales Tax Exemption for materials purchased for trails, which again was added as a legislative priority for the 2025 Legislative Session.

Next up was former Vice President, the late Tim Heinen’s, request to have a snowmobile themed license plate available to Minnesotans wanting to show their support for snowmobiling. This was added to the legislative agenda as well. Legislative reception

discussion followed and was approved again for 2025. There was a lengthy discussion on the CRP landowner requirements if you have a snowmobile trail on it, and a plan was put into place. If you have questions contact Chair Hutchinson; followed by protection of our dedicated fund, and initial discussions on the statewide liability insurance policy.

With help from VP Harder and President Clevenger, Director at Large Wakefield explaining the difference between a “good” caution sign and a “better” one.
President Clevenger getting the festivities for the General Membership meeting started in front of a full house.

Also discussed was the Candidate Survey in last month’s issue, and the Newsledder e-Newsletter that asked, “What do you think should be the most important purpose of MnUSA?” At 69.2% members voted for having a “united voice for the clubs for legislation and lobbying.” Some members asked about how to get snowmobile safety information on getting certified. You all can get signed up at: dnr.updates@updates.mn.dnr. gov and you will get all the class locations.

I hand-delivered a letter of support for continuation of RTP funding legislation to Senator Amy Klobuchar at FarmFest this summer, and, in fact, she did follow through with that request. It’s since been stuck in legal review, with hope to get it out as a marker bill as a place holder for next session.

Saturday started with a good discussion, on many items. I brought up Directors Reports and the new Directors Handbook, had an update from the DNR with a report from Wade Miller and Laura Preus, and then went thru the committee reports. Many committees had breakouts that afternoon. Election Committee did discuss and approve at the Summer Event, a rotation of officer

positions as it relates to terms of the E-Board, but the committee hasn’t met to follow up on those changes.

Next up was the actual elections. The floor was opened for nominations and found none for any of the positions, so all were approved for another year. After adjournment, Fundraising met and discussed how the changes to gambling rules in the State of Minnesota has impacted charities; then a quick lunch to get into the afternoon sessions, including Kelly giving a firsthand view of the Membership Management Program and Website update which was well attended, and expertly presented.

Other committee meetings started with membership, and the discussion started with updated membership forms with the new address on them, and that clubs still can send in paper rosters, and for multiple year memberships. Next an update on membership cards, and it was approved by the committee to go with perforated heavy card stock membership cards, and forward on to the board of directors for approval with the RAD book going electronic. Business supporters to go to one only at $100 was approved vs. the two options now of $ 75 and $100.

Why Join MnUSA brochure was approved to be refreshed as it has the old address on it. Approved payment of USA dues of $500; agreed to have a booth at the Groomer Show in Deerwood in January of 2025; Next up was the purchase of a new tent for the booths. Scotty Harder gave a bid from RPM Graphics and it was approved to go to the board of directors on Sunday to spend the $ 3,500. Permanent building on the Sno Baron’s grounds was discussed and agreed to pursue further.

Next up was the Communications Committee meeting. Opening the discussion was free Want Ads for members on the “new” website when it’s up and running, was agreed to and passed, similar to what Wisconsin has on its website. Suggestion from the spring meeting to make the Club Submission more easily available, Chair Wakefield went thru the 2024-2025 Budget, MWO’s representatives were present for the meeting and reported sales have gone well and we expect to see big checks coming back to MnUSA from those ad sales.

Donations were presented by club representatives for the joint MSEAF and MnUSA Veterans Ride to be held in February 2025.
Breakout session by the Lake County Search and Rescue team on how to stay safe out there!

Newsledder has been very popular; discussion on the name and it was decided to leave it called Newsledder The biggest point was to TELL YOUR STORY, and that’s the mantra for the Communications Committee for the season. We know clubs are doing good things, but nobody knows about it unless you share it with Communications. Contact me and we will share it with MnUSA members first, thru this publication, and then after 20 days, we will share it with the world via the internet and our website. Breakout seminars included Grant Writing with Wade Miller, State Trails and Snowmobile Program Consultant; Snowmobile Safety Training Overview and Questions with Bruce Lawrence DNR Enforcement; Trail Maintenance; and the Lake County Search and Rescue rounded out the day, and ended with a well-attended banquet and dinner.

Sunny Sunday started off crisp. We want to thank MidWest Outdoors magazine for sending Chuck and Mark, as they were very vital in getting the Fall Workshop covered for this issue, and off they went back to Chicagoland. The Board of Directors meeting was called to order and those items needing approval by the Board of Directors, were presented, like the expenditure for the $3,500 for the new 10x20 tent, which was approved, and the expenditure for the $ 1,105 for 10,000 perforated membership forms, also approved. Additional $5,500 for legal and QuickBooks help, and add to the magazine cover, “Please Register your Snowmobile” approved. Additional discussion about the 501C3 application, mission statement, MnUSA and MSEAF relations, and financial update and the Personnel Policies were approved.

We’d all like to Thank Region 7 for a wonderful Fall Workshop, and all the Region 7 clubs that helped

make the weekend successful, Alborn Sno-Devils, Duluth Drift-Toppers, Finland Snowmobile Club, Hermantown Night Riders, Pequaywan Area Trail Blazers, Reservoir Riders, Silver Trail Riders, and the Voyageur Snowmobile Club. Also, Black Bear Casino and Resort, for the excellent hospitality and great food and beverages all weekend long. Region 8 you’ve got big shoes to fill…

2025 Veterans Appreciation Ride

Minnesota Snowmobile Education & Advancement Fund (MSEAF) and Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association (MnUSA) are again co-hosting their annual snowmobile ride for veterans and active duty personnel as a token of our appreciation to our veterans who have given part of their lives to serve all of us. The 2025 event will take place February 15th in Grand Rapids, MN and include 3 meals and lodging. The hosts would like to introduce veterans to snowmobiling, and also invite those who have their own snowmobiles to come along to enjoy the day. Pre-registration is required.

The event is funded through donations. Your tax deductible donation of any amount is welcome or a $225 donation will Sponsor a Vet or active duty military personnel for the event. All funds designated “Veterans Ride” will be segregated for that purpose only. With the cancellation of the 2024 ride due to no snow, donations made for 2024 will be used to support the 2025 ride.

MSEAF is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Donors will receive a receipt recognizing their donation and tax deductibility of donations. Send your donation to MSEAF at: Minnesota Snowmobile Education & Advancement Fund, PO Box 28486, Minneapolis, MN 55428, 763-560-8281.

Veteran’s registration information can be found at www.mnvetsnowmobileride.org.

Remembering Tim Heinen

This issue’s Milestones is especially close to my heart, as Tim grew up in Waconia and went to school with me. I was also a frequent customer of Tim’s dad’s service station which offered fuel, repairs, convenience store items (prior to it being a “thing”) and towing.

I can remember a frosty November morning trying to get three cattle pots out of the farm, hauling cattle to the Iowa State Fairgrounds for a cattle sale, when Tim’s dad Earl had to be called to pull all three of them out. Earl had his huge tow truck hooked to the semi and a huge oak tree as he tightened the big old cable. Soon he had that big tow truck suspended in the air until the weight of the tow truck forced the semi to come free.

Tim frequently talked about the trails he rode in and around Waconia; I swear I was right behind him.

Rest in peace my good friend.

Timothy Paul “Tim” Heinen 1958-2024

Tim was a wonderful father, husband and friend. He was born and raised in Waconia, MN. He graduated from Dunwoody in Minneapolis and worked as an automotive technician for 40+ years and continued helping family and friends with vehicle issues long after he retired.

He married his wife Michele in 1991, and they were blessed with 2 children, Daniel and Emily.

He loved snowmobiling and was an active member of many snowmobile clubs in Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and father. He is survived by his wife Michele, children Daniel and Emily, daughter-in-law Alexis, mother Iris Heinen, brothers Gary Heinen (Jackie), Bryan Heinen (Beth), Greg Heinen (Clair), and Jason Heinen. along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial gathering was held at Lakeville Collision in Lakeville, MN in March.

MARSHALL ROLLR BLADE

MARSHALL ROLLR BLADE

Marshall Rollr Blade is a trail roller with an adjustable blade, designed to pack deep/heavy snow on trails to create a base that lasts throughout the season. When used in conjunction with a drag, the end result is a smooth, packed trail.

• Roller saves you time and fuel.

• Easy to operate.

• Sideways-slide protection for side-hill trails.

• Hydraulically controlled blade in front of the roller drags snow along and levels bumps before the roller packs the trail surface.

• Roller is made of 3/8” thick x 36” diameter pipe.

• Hydraulically controlled wheels lift the entire unit off the ground for transporting on surfaces other than snow, if needed.

• Built heavy for snow compaction - 4,000 lbs. Watch our video at the website below.

Lakeville SnoTrackers

Submitted

The Lakeville SnoTrackers Snowmobile Club was awarded a ISMA grant for $500 to put on a Snowmobile Day Event on Saturday, October 26th during Snow Day Minnesota. The event took place at Leo’s South in Lakeville, a great supporter of snowmobiling and a Ski-Doo and Lynx dealership. The Lakeville SnoTrackers were joined at the event by the Lonsdale Wizards Snowmobile Club and Women on Wheels.

St. Augusta Blizzard Busters

Submitted by Kevin Albers

The event was a highly competitive cookoff, featuring meatballs to spring rolls, that had to be tasted twice before voting. The clubs’ objective for the day was to educate the public on what a snowmobile club does, from activities it participates in, to charities it gives back to and, of course, the work it does to put in the local snowmobile trails. Leo’s South also provided two gift cards for club members renewing that day, and the club was selling MnUSA raffle calendars on site. Everyone enjoyed the great comradery, good belly laughs, and a lot of information sharing. Thank you to Leo’s South, to ISMA for the grant, to all the clubs that helped with the event, and to ALL the club members throughout the state for putting in trails for all of us for the December 1st trail OPENING!

The St. Augusta Blizzard Busters hosted our 3rd Annual and 50th Anniversary Open House on Saturday, October 5 at Hidden Lake Park in St. Augusta. In addition to a vintage snowmobile display, groomer display and free food, a few of our founding members were on hand to share stories about “the good old days.”
