The Power of the Paint Brush: Pablo Picasso By Roxy ART WILL NEVER BE THE SAME

This is what we see nowadays, as the great Pablo Picasso. THE BEHOLDER OF THE BRUSH No surprise that Pablo Picasso became an artist, considering that his childhood influenced it. Since he was a baby, all he ever concerned about was art. His first words were “piz, piz” him trying to pronounce “lápiz” the spanish word for pencil. No matter where he studied, either the Royal Academy of Art in Barcelona or the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, Pablo struggled with rules and the focuses of the lessons. Instead he had a strong desire to draw, he’d skip classes to explore the city and sketch. Entering adulthood, Picasso acquired his first job in Paris. Signing a contract with dealer, Pere Menach for 150 francs ($750 US) per month. Most people don’t know what they’d want to be when they’re older but all the red flags from Picasso’s early life made his decision quite simple.

Pablo Picasso’s contribution to art impacted hugely on the modern art world even though he didn’t invent something that improves our way of living. His work was intended to send messages and to convey sentiments to the viewer. “Guernica” was one of his most powerful pieces from a political point showing the injustice of the bombing. He’d taken strokes of paint and transformed them to educate us on valuable lessons. Despite criticism that Pablo’s art was unattractive, he had seized the crowd’s attention to change their way of thinking and looking about the world. Although we weren’t affected physically, Picasso mentally restructured our grasp of the obvious to guide us to an improved future.

“He pioneered a new form of visual art, a new way of pointing, a new way of thinking about and expressing himself. He did not follow the crowd, rather he was not afraid to be a leader and try something new and exciting. The world of art owes a debt of thanks to Mr. Picasso.” ~ Paul S.

This photo is taken in Montmartre, when Pablo moved to France at a young age.

A MAN WHO INSPIRED US ALL Picasso became famous from his talent, however it’s the effect and content of his art which we truly remember about him. Some people are persuasive, he had a way of encouraging everyone to examine our surrondings differently, from a more creative perspective using his “cubism period”. Moments of tragedies and delightful happenings throughout the 20th century were sustained in his works to lest people from forgetting. Politically speaking, Pablo manipulated some of his art into “instruments of war” to influence things like peace presented in “Guernica” for example. He demonstrates what art is capable of and that art is more than just painting lines on a canvas.

“The Three Musicians” is one of his works from his expressional, Cubism Period.

Paintings portrayed sadness and depression through many shades of blue.

It consisted of happier paintings with warm colours.

He nurtured a totally new style turning away from reality and tradition.

These works were painted when Pablo began to follow the laws of art.

The off-spring of his cubism. When he made his big political statement.

PICASSO’S PERIODS During Picasso’s career, there were periods which in his artistic style changed. From 1901 to 1904 was his “Blue Period” demonstrating depression and loneliness in sad scenarios like poverty because Pablo was mourning over the loss of his friend Carlos Casagemas. Things got more vivid when Picasso started using warm colours during his “Rose Period” which was influenced by the happy events in his life like his love. “Cubism” was pioneered between 1907 and 1918-1921 which was a totally different style straying from tradition. When Picasso woke up to reality he painted his “Classical Period”. After he created a style called “Surrealism” which happened to be an off-spring of his cubism. If he hadn’t produced all these periods then there wouldn’t be a “Picasso”, you’d end up with just an ordinary artist.

Dear Roxy, I have been greeted with criticism lately. People are saying that my art is unappealing to the eye. I do very much enjoy painting. However my purpose is to use my work to communicate crucial messages that need to be heard. How do I get my viewers to look at the bigger picture instead of what’s representing it? ~ Pablo Picasso

Dear Mr. Picasso, To make the public understand your paintings, do what you are talented at. Just paint, challenge everyone to comprehend the subject. Although to get across your messages, you must be keen about it. Create the simplest of works but with the most powerful use of colours to help express. This should help you, good luck! ~ Roxy

Demi Lovato: Her Story on how She Stayed Strong! B y : A d r i e n n e . 2 8 , M a r c h , 2 0 1 4 Bb Demi Lovato has made a lot of accomplishments. A lot more than you would think considering how tough her life has been. But to only be able name a couple of them, that‟s not the easiest. However, Demi is only 21 and is an inspiration to many teenagers who are going through such miserable times, like bullying because Demi knows exactly how they feel. Teenagers all over the world look up to her because she truly wants to stop it. She wants people to know how serious it can affect the person being bullied. So that is why she has made a campaign called “Anti-bullying”, so she can help others who go through the same difficulties as she did at such a young age. Also, she

Where the Demons Started to Come into Demi.

As she is well known as a singer, Lovato also has another side of her life. When she was younger, she was a victim of bullying. Lovato would get many nasty comments when she was in Middle School. Her bullying was so dreadful, the „popular people‟ (who bullied

anorexia) at the age of 8. She wanted to look like the models on the cover of the magazine

because they would always looked so superb.

Why Demi was the chosen one. In my eyes, Demi Lovato is a hero. She has made such a huge impact on not just my life, but others around the world. She is also my role model. A lot of people want to do something about bullying because they know it‟s a very evil act. And because of Demi, people have started to stand up for others. She has taught me to always stand up if something isn‟t right, if I see someone getting bullied or hurt. I also chose Demi because she has informed me to always accept people and accept myself because every single person in this world is unique in their own way. She has taught me to always think positive about my life because if she made it through troubled times, so we can too.

“Love is Louder than the Pressure to be Perfect” is one of the campaigns‟ Demi has worked with.

Aung San Suu Kyi

Those 29 Years Weren’t for Nothing Positive Energy, Positive Change Aung San Suu Kyi contributed so much to Burma that it would probably take a lot more than a paragraph to tell it all. However, a few of the things that I can say are very important. She contributed by being one of the few people to stand up to Burmese dictator U Ne Win, for which she paid dearly by starting her 29-year streak under house arrest. Another way she contributed was by placing her country before herself and her family, even when her husband died without her. Suu Kyi is also contributing right now as she thrives to free Burma and its people. Aung San Suu Kyi is clearly a truly inspirational person who will not rest until her country is at peace.

A Biography of Aung San Suu Kyi

Early life and career of Aung San Suu Kyi She attended high school at Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi and studied philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford University. Between 1969 and 1971, she went to New York for graduate school. After university, Suu Kyi married Michael Aris and they move to Bhutan, where he tutored the royal family and she became a research officer in the Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1973 the couple returned to England for the birth of their first child, Alexander in London and in ’77, their second son, Kim was born at Oxford. Hi Ms. Suu Kyi, Thank you so much for asking me for advice. As a matter if fact, I do have an idea for you. Firstly, if you haven’t already, get a good lawyer, so that if you are arrested, you can take your prosecutors to court and have a fair fight, unlike last time. Secondly, make 1989-Jan 2 sure, like every second grader, to be good and stay away from the principal’s/lawyers office. Hope this helps. Why Aung San Suu Kyi?

1989-July 20

Why did I choose Aung San Suu Kyi as the topic of my research article? So many reasons. For one thing, I believe that she is a very cool person to research because the facts never end and she is a very interesting person who has done countless 1991 things for the human good. Another reason is because she is a person whom many Awarded the Nobel people my age have not heard of, so Peace Prize reading this article; they can learn some cool facts about a person worth knowing about. He played a huge role in creating the internet and he received an award from Bill Clinton for doing so. Vint Cerf chained the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. (ICANN). Right now, Vint Cerf is working on a project that would extend the internet into space.

He was very passionate about math and he majored in it at Stanford before going back to UCLA to study computer science and earn his Ph.D.

Father of the Internet, Great role model I think that Vint Cerf is a great inspiration. Even though he has a disability which was being hearing impaired, he still made a huge contribution to our world. He helped create the Internet, which we use, in our everyday lives. If he hadn’t helped create the Internet, then our lives would be very different right now. Ask me a question Dear Ben, Hello Ben this is Vint. When I created the Internet, I created it to share information across people around the world. What it has expanded to be fantastic! All the social media websites are great but there is one thing. Some people are abusing the Internet and bullying people on it. That’s not what I created it for. What should I do? - Vint Cerf

The Internet can be used in many different ways

About Ben

Personally, I love the Internet! But the things that some people do on it are terrible. Bullying is terrible and social bullying is just as bad. The Internet is a privilege not a right and people are abusing it. I think that a way that we could stop this is to not do it ourselves or report someone else who is doing it. Good luck with tour project. I’m sure it will be out of this world. - Ben

I play many sports and enjoy most of them. The sport I enjoy the most is hockey. Some people don’t like animals, I am one of the people. I enjoy having the internet and I use all sorts of websites!

Cancer can be beaten! Mario Lemieux was an amazing hockey player. Unfortunately, he was forced to retire due to his encounter with Hodgkin’s disease. Lucky for him, he walked out unharmed and uninjured. He later decided to create a foundation to help raise money to cure that type of cancer. It will also help those who weren’t as lucky as him in fighting Hodgkin’s disease.

The Lemieux foundation

Mario telling his idea to the world

Fun facts about Mario’s early life

Mario as we know was a hero to all, but what about before the world discovered him? Little boy Mario Lemieux started his fantastic hockey career at only 3 years old! He made his way onto a team when the coach saw him deke a goalie at 4. He was actually so insistent on competing that he dropped out of school at 16 with a grade 10 education. After he finished his career he retired only to come back and play another season!

Mario Lemieux: The world’s best hockey player

“At first, I thought that Mario Lemieux was ’just another hockey player’ but I was impressed when I learned more in-depth information. I think knowing he beat cancer will give a lot of kids hope, and the work his foundation has done for kids with cancer and their families is tremendous”

Was there more to Mario?

Mario was a great man. At first, he inspired me solely because he was a good hockey player. Now, as I have researched more about his accomplishments and his struggles, I see him as a god. If I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, I would’ve given up. Did he? No. This man kept giving more to the community and to the people around him. He’s a wellknown guy but not for the right reasons. Anyone can look at him and say, “Look, a picture of Mario Lemieux! The world’s greatest hockey player!” But I know now that I can say, “He was more than just a hockey player. He was a hero to society.”

Decides to raise money to cure Hodgkin’s disease

Ben’s best advice

Dear Ben,

Dear Mario,

As you probably know, I’ve recently been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. Also, I’ve been told that because of it, my hockey career must come to an end. People tell me that now I can’t inspire the younger generation. Something tells me that that’s not true. I’m stuck for ideas but I need help. What do you think I should do?

That sounds like quite a situation. Unfortunately, nothing I say will get you back on the ice but that doesn’t mean you will immediately stop inspiring people. You’ve left your mark on history. However, if you still want to inspire kids, why don’t you create a foundation? It would help children with Hodgkin’s disease get through hard times and you might be able to raise money to get closer to curing it.

-Mario Lemieux

I hope that helped. -Ben

JONATHAN TOEWS: A TRUE LEADER BY BRENDEN

Captain Toews Gift to the World Jonathan Toews was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Toews is bilingual; he can speak English and French. At the age of 3, Jonathan Toews dad tied Jonathan’s first pair of skates. Toews had a natural stride witch made him stand better than the rest. Toews was selected first overall in the 2003 WHL Bantam Draft by the Tri-City Americans. During his day with the Stanley Cup this past off-season, Toews took it waterskiing with friends in Winnipeg. Toews had a lake named after him following winning the Stanley Cup in 2010, Toews Lake is located near the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

International Sensation I chose Jonathan Toews as my chosen individual because he is a great leader for the Chicago Blackhawks and in life itself. He has represented Canada a bunch of times including:       

2005 Canada Under 17 2006 Canada World Junior Champions 2007 Canada World Junior Champions 2007 Canada World Champions 2008 Canada World Champions 2010 Canada Olympics 2014 Canada Olympics

As you can see Toews has played lots of times at the international stage. He has won 2 Olympic gold medals, led Canada to a World U-17 Hockey Challenge gold medal and World Junior gold medal. In the NHL, Toews has captain the Chicago to 2 Stanley Cups. Toews is a really good player and is really fun to watch.

Difference Maker Some of Jonathan Toews contributions to the world is he has a lake named after him on the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Also on the eve of a Blackhawks-Penguins game at Soldier Field, Jonathan Toews invited 4 year old Nicholas Skretkowski onto the ice from the Make a Wish Foundation. Nicholas, from Ontario, was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor when he was 18 months old. Also Toews has Captained Chicago to 2 Stanley Cups and won gold with Canada 2 times.

April 29, 1988 Jonathan Toews is born in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

January 24, 2006 Jonathan Toews is drafted 3rd overall by the Chicago Blackhawks.

October 10, 2007 Jonathan Toews scored his 1st NHL goal against the San Jose Sharks.

July 18, 2008 Jonathan Toews is named captain of the Chicago Blackhawks.

June 24, 2013 Jonathan Toews leads the Chicago Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup Championship. Toews second Stanley Cup win.

From a hockey standpoint, Toews is an excellent role model. Not only has he captained two Stanley cup winning teams, he has succeed at the International level too. In addition to winning the World Junior Championship, he won Gold at the 2010 and the 2014 Olympics. Although many will argue it’s difficult for a hockey player to make a substantial contribution to the world, Olympic Hockey in Canada is as big as it gets. Toews has definitely contributed. -Colin

Honorary CoverGirl Talia By Ciela Joy Castellano Talia Joy Castellano was a huge inspiration. She gave every child who was living with cancer hope. Makeup guru “Talia Joy”, as she liked to be called, was a really great makeup artist. In her YouTube videos, Talia was exciting, funny and was always fun to watch. Even after Talia had passed, thousands have continued to watch her YouTube channel. Castellano is famous for her well known saying “makeup is my wig”. Makeup artist Talia Joy Castellano was named an honorary COVERGIRL. After finding out about Talia and her story, you know that you can accomplish a lot even when you have obstacles like having cancer. Anything is achievable!

Talia as an honorary COVERGIRL

The Work Of Art This is where her story begins. Talia lived in central California and on February 14th, 2007, Talia was seven years old when she was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma. She would spend many months in and out of the hospital going through radiation, chemotherapy and surgeries. Finally the cancer was gone. Unfortunately, one year later, poor Talia had to hear the bad news that the cancer had returned. One day Talia went over to her mom’s friend’s house and was looking at all her makeup. She tried it on and really wanted to get some of her own. They got her some, and after that they realised that Talia was actually really good at makeup. Talia decided to post her talent on social media. Talia started making “makeup tutorial” videos and posted them on YouTube. Months later, Talia was getting hundreds of thousands of views and subscribers and at that point she knew she had the attention of many.

Her famous saying “makeup is my wig” written on her bald head.

Talia was clearly a very special girl. She was full of life in the face of death. -

One of Talia’s dreams was to meet and go on the Ellen DeGeneres show, and in September 2012 that dream finally came true. On the Ellen show Talia was extremely happy to meet Ellen DeGeneres. Talia also, like many guests on Ellen, had a great surprise. On the show Talia was named an honorary Covergirl. Unfortunately in 2012 the cancer spread to her bones and Talia was diagnosed with leukemia. The doctors told her that she had only months to live. Talia then created a “bucket list”; a list of all the things she wanted to do before she passed. On Tuesday, July 16th, Talia unfortunately past away. It was a very sad day for family, friends, and all her fans. After Talia died, her mother and older sister Mattia continued Talia’s YouTube channel. They posted a video saying that they wanted to complete everything on Talia’s bucket list. Fans all over the world have been checking things off on her list. R.I.P Talia, you will be missed.

Dear Ciela,

Dear Talia,

People have been saying that it’s wrong that I am wearing a lot of makeup and that I am way too young. What should I do?

Don’t listen to them. If wearing makeup makes you feel good then you should wear makeup. The way you apply makeup is an art form. You are very talented and you should be able to showcase that. You have inspired so many people with your talent. Just remember that you are beautiful with or without makeup.

Michael Sam: Changing pro sports forever Who is Michael Sam Michael Sam was born in Hitchcock, Texas the seventh of eight children in a family known for all of the wrong reasons. Two of his siblings have already died and two are in jail plus one sibling went missing in 1998. Michael is already the most successful of all of his siblings and probably his entire family. When Michael first decided to play football it was to stay off the streets and not get into trouble. Michael Sam's career on the Missouri University football team has been a good one. He won the SEC Defensive player of the year and College football All-American. Right now he is an NFL draft prospect and possibly the first openly gay player in the NFL. Michael Sam's rise to National news headlines was a tough one but it has helped him become the man he is today. Michael Sam appeared on the cover of sports illustrated

How Michael Sam changed the world Though his time being widely known across North America is short Michael Sam has contributed lots. First off he has paved the way for openly gay college studentathletes and shown them how to handle situations. Also if Michael is drafted or signed by an NFL team he will be the first openly gay athlete in the league and that will help more and more football players realize they can do what he did. Michael Sam has been the poster boy for any gay football players or any other sports for that matter. Michael Sam has contributed lots in a very short time.

My connections with Michael Sam

Michael Sam is a hero to many people and he deserves to have articles written about him. First of, all Michael has showed everyone that you don't have to hide who you are, and that on it's own is very big. I like that he is famous for something that has to do with sports because I really like sports. I also admire his bravery at being the first athlete to come out as being gay who is trying to make a pro sports team. Michael Sam has changed the world so much and that has to be worth an article. Michael Sam looks like just another college football player... but he's not.

Dear Connor,

If you are worrying about whether an NFL will want to draft you this year I think you need to stop. NFL coaches are looking for people who will help their team they don't care that much if they're gay or not. If you want to get picked in the draft you need to do well when the scouts come to your college and are watching you. If you do all this I believe you will get drafted.

Thank you for all your advice about how I could get drafted, I will keep it in mind when the scouts come to Missouri to see me. Also at the draft I will be thinking of everything you said and keeping in mind you're a Washington fan. If I get drafted you are one of the people I have to thank. -Thanks for everything

WAYNE GRETZKY: A Fantastic Impact on a Wonderful Game

2014

Wayne Gretzky has had a career like no other. This hockey phenomena has had a fantastic impact on the NHL, Hockey in Canada and became the face of hockey in California, making it a noticeable sport in Los Angeles. In the late 80s Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings, a place where hockey was so unpopular it was barely even a thing. Yet one season later The Great One had made The City of Angels a hockey town, bringing them to the Stanley cup finals in 1993. He has also had an impact on the NHL setting 60 records! On top of that, winning four Stanley Cups in the 1980s. He has also represented Canada on their international team several times. The Great One, Wayne Gretzky as you can see, a fantastic impact on hockey. “I would say that Wayne is chiefly responsible for “growing” the game of hockey in California to the point where there are now three successful California-based NHL franchises and a whole new generation of hockey youth in California dreaming of being the next “Great One”.” -Bernie M.

Wayne Gretzky was born on

January 26, 1961 in Brantford, Ontario. He learned to skate on a backyard rink and ended up as one of the NHL’s best players. As a young player Wayne had a very famous childhood playing for his home town team. After completing his final year in Peewee hockey he had an astonishing 378 goals. After years of playing with older and bigger kids, 15 year old Wayne played in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) for the Peterborough Petes. Adding to his success, he was the leading scorer in the 1978 World Juniors Tournament for Canada. Moving on to his NHL Career, Wayne won 4 Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers, put hockey on the map in California and set multiple scoring records. Eventually, this long, high scoring and historic career came to an end with a final season in 1999 with the New York Rangers.

The reason I chose this fine individual is quite obvious. Wayne Gretzky has had arguably the most successful hockey career in the history of hockey! Also, he has not only had a huge impact in Canada, he has had an enormous impact on hockey throughout North America and around the world. He has influenced, impressed and inspired so many people, which makes you love the game of hockey more than ever.

“Wayne is a perfect example of what talent, hard work and a positive attitude can lead to. Our youth need heroes and Wayne Gretzky is a hero of the highest order!” –Bernie M.

Dear Wayne, I just have some thoughts about how you dealt with the media in your day of playing hockey and still dealing with it now. From what I’ve seen when I watch hockey interviews is that some players choose their words carefully and say the right thing but some don’t and they let there emotions slip away. My advice is to always keep your cool around the media. -Jack

Dear Jack, “Wayne is certainly someone to look up to for his scoring records.” -Bernie M.

Special to Glenview, by: Jack, an avid student of the sport of hockey, born and raised in Toronto, practically with a puck in his hean. Jack loves to read about, study the stats and share his views on all aspect of our favourite sport so dear to our Canadian hearts

-Jack

Thanks so much for the advice – I really do appreciate you taking the time to write me. I do agree that keeping your cool around the media is really important around the media. I did try to do just that while I played hockey in the NHL. I always made sure and still continue to make sure that I am a good role model for kids around the world. Thanks again and keep playin’ hockey!

DJ Kool Herc, how he got his name…

Kool Herc:Inventor of B-Boying My individual is a very special person, he is DJ Kool Herc. Kool Herc is not his real name, it's Clive Campbell. He invented B-Boying. His accomplishment of inventing B-Boying really made a big difference in the art of dance. Kool Herc was known for his dance move the “Break”. Which then has a big impact on different dance styles. Kool Herc Graduating

Early life & Career... Before Kool Herc’s career as a DJ, at a young age of 12 he was surrounded by music systems. Mostly like reggae and hip-hop. So he started to do party’s around his neighbourhood. This then started his DJ career. All Kool Herc wanted to mix reggae and hip-hop together. But he did much more than that.

Impact on me...

Kool Herc Birthday

My reasoning of why Kool Herc had an impact on me is. First, he got me to dance way more often. Second, he did become an influence on me. And lastly, he made me want to become a professional break-dancer or a DJ. Break dancing is really close to me. During my past 7 years I have gotten more involved in dancing.

Dear Jayson, I have been noticing that many reporters are complaining that I have not included other dance styles into break dancing, I have considered trying other dance styles but it turns out being a weird dance step without fluid movements, do u think you could help out? -Kool Herc

Dear Kool Herc, Thank you for considering my idea of including new dance styles, first I would consider popping and locking, because no one has really made two dance styles together, and it would be unique that u mixed reggae and hip-hop together so it would be cool if you made popping together with break dancing. -Jayson

Karen Kain

An Inspiration to the World of Dance By Kiana

The accomplishments of Karen Kain Karen Kain is a very talented woman. She has had many accomplishments in her life. I believe that she achieved two amazing goals. First, she was promoted to a principal dancer at the National Ballet of Canada, and served in this role for 26 years. Her second great accomplishment is her current role of artistic director at the National Ballet. The artistic director is one of the most important and respected roles for a ballet company. Her accomplishments have made her a significant role model for dancers all around the world.

Kain’s Turning “Pointe”

Just like any mother, Kain’s mother wanted the best for her child. Believing that ballet would improve her poise, posture, and discipline, her mother in rolled her in ballet classes at the age of six. After Karen Kain saw the Giselle production with Celia Franca, she decided that she would become a ballerina. This inspired her to dedicate her life to the dance world. Not only did her hard work allow her to train her dance skills and to perform at the National Ballet of Canada, but she became the principal dancer there also. “Karen Kain epitomizes the combination of hard work and creativity. With these two qualities, beautiful performances of dance are enjoyed by millions around the world.” Mary

Karen Kain, in her career, is training and working hard to become a principal ballerina.

Learning about a Great Canadian Did you know who Karen Kain was before reading this article? Probably not. Many people do not realize that she is a great Canadian since dance isn’t a popular sport like hockey or basketball. I chose her so that you can learn about her talents and contributions to the dance world. She is also a role model to me because just like her I am a hard working dancer and will hopefully pursue a career in dance. Karen Kain inspires dancers all over the world including me. She inspires me to perform to the best of my abilities and to follow my dreams. Karen Kain in “Swan Lake”, 1980

Kain’s Timeline 1957 (6 years) started her first ballet class in Toronto.

1962 (11 years) began training at the National Ballet of Canada.

1969 (18 years) – joined the National Ballet of Canada.

1971 (20 years) – became principal dancer at National Ballet of Canada.

2005 to now (63 years) – appointed to artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada.

As you can see from the timeline above, Kain has

devoted her life to dance. Ever since she was a little girl to the current day, Kain continues to contribute to the dance world in many ways. Not only does she have talent, but she is giving the opportunity for others to grow their own talent. I can’t wait to see what she will be doing next. Our country should be proud of this talented Canadian who inspires creativity and dance performance. Karen Kain and Frank Agustyn in “The Sleeping Beauty”

Some Advice to Help Discouraged Dancers Dear Kiana,

Some dancers do not feel comfortable dancing because they don’t think that they fit the image of a ballerina. The National Ballet of Canada seems to only select thin dancers with long arms and legs for their dance performances. I want to help people to go for their dreams. However, this is an issue for dancers since they become discouraged about their body image. Do you have any suggestions? Sincerely, Karen Kain Dear Ms. Kain,

Body image is indeed a serious issue in the dance world. I believe that if the National Ballet of Canada begins to accept all body types for their dance performances, then we can change the way we think about what dancers should look like. No matter what your body type is, the National Ballet of Canada should look for dancers who can dance with passion and connect to the performance. I hope this helps more dancers to pursue their dreams. From, Kiana Reid Kiana is a competitive dancer at The Dance Machine studio. She competes in the following disciplines: acro, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, tap and ballet. She hopes to pursue a career in dance just like Karen Kain!

Elvis Presley was born on January 8, 1935 and he faced a lot of problems in his childhood. Things got better for him on June 6, 1954, when Sun Records offered him a contract. On December 20, 1957, Elvis willingly entered the army as a regular soldier. But in December 1968, after new bands became appearing, Elvis’ fan base was shrinking, so Elvis made a comeback special on TV to win them back. Sadly, Elvis was under a lot of pressure and began taking prescription drugs, which he became addicted to. He died of drug overdose at age 42, on August 16, 1977.

What do Elvis’ fans think? Elvis in the army as a soldier.

Hello Klara, I had come back from the army awhile ago and I noticed that there are new musicians around. The Beatles, for instance, are insanely popular. I’m worried that my fans are losing interest in me and I wanted your opinion on what I should do to win them back. Since you’re a fan of mine I thought you might have some ideas.

Dear Elvis, I’m glad you came to me for advice! I am indeed a fan of yours and I do as a matter of fact have an idea. Your fans love you, but since you haven’t been around for awhile they have fallen in love with new musicians and begun listening to new music. What I propose you do is a comeback special! Announce to your fans that you have returned, as talented and eager to play for them as ever, and your fans will soon come crawling back to you. I guarantee it. Hope this helps!

Sincerely, Elvis Presley

Your fan, Klara

Elvis Presley: The King of Rock N’ Roll How He Changed the World of Rock N’ Roll Elvis Presley made a very big impact in the music world. Surprisingly, he didn’t invent rock n’ roll; it had already been rippling along when he showed up. But he made a change to it. Back then, before Elvis, rock n’ roll sounded different, with a piano or a saxophone as the lead instruments. However, Elvis’ played the guitar, which soon after him became the lead instrument of rock music. Elvis also had a way of dancing that all the teenagers loved. He inspired many, many people to pursue their dreams (i.e. John Lennon would have become a journalist if Elvis hadn’t inspired him.) Without realizing it, Elvis also helped open the doors of acceptance for black music across America. He loved singing black music and he introduced it to a large audience of white teens that soon became fans of black music too. Elvis was chipping away the walls of racism, at least in the music world.

Above is a picture of Elvis playing his guitar.

The Backstory Elvis Presley may be legendary, but his life wasn’t always so spectacular…

Elvis at a young age (his teenage years.)

Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley, was stillborn, so Elvis grew up as an only child. His family was poor and had trouble paying the rent for their house. Elvis’ mother, Gladys, especially struggled when Elvis’ father, Vernon, was put in prison for 3 years for forgery. (He sold a pig for 4$ but changed the check into 14$ or 40$). Gladys couldn’t make enough money on her own so Elvis and his mother moved in with some relatives. Elvis also got bullied at school which made his life even harder, but eventually things started to get better for him. His first year after graduating high school was spent working a day job and playing at small clubs at night. Elvis often wondered whether he’d ever make it big and on June 6, 1954, his wish came true. He received a phone call from Sun Records, who offered him a contract (which he signed) and made him famous amongst teenagers and college students and anyone else interested in rock n’ roll.

An Amazing Inspiration There is one particular reason I chose Elvis, and it’s because he is an amazing inspiration He inspired the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Frank Ferdinand and thousands more. But the fascinating thing is that he is still inspiring people today, even though it’s been 60 years since he became famous and now he is no longer with us. Modern musicians like Eminem and Justin Timberlake were inspired by Elvis. I immediately saw how Elvis was an inspiration; he practically created a new kind of rock n’ roll.

Elvis performing live.

Shirley Temple: America’s favorite When you try to think of someone who could cheer anybody up with her bubbly spirit, on name comes to mind. Shirley Temple was only three when she began her performing career. During Hollywood’s golden age, she was America’s top box office star, beating out Clark Gable. She was such a heartwarmer that she got praised by President Roosevelt himself as “a bright spirit

during a gloomy time”. At age six, Shirley won her very own special Academy Award for her “outstanding contribution to screen entertainment”. She also fought breast cancer successfully in 1972, after undergoing surgery. Shirley, seen playing her role in Little Miss Marker.

A Childhood Career Gertrude Temple, Shirley’s mother, played an enormous role in her daughter’s life. She was the one who encouraged Shirley to develop her singing, dancing and acting skills before the little girl became known.

 Shirley Temple made huge contributions to film as her work as a child actress is known by so many. Her hard work and subsequent success show how anything is possible if you work tirelessly to achieve it. -Sarah L. 

Shirley’s hairstyle was always the same, with exactly 56 perfect curls on her head according to her mother, who was the one who did her hair. Before she became famous, Shirley took dance lessons at Meglin's Dance School, where she got noticed by a casting director. This is where she began her career.

Why So Special? The reason why I chose Shirley Temple is because a career like hers truly must be acknowledged. She is incredibly talented, being not only cute but remarkably gifted. Dancing, singing, acting… this young performer did it all. Another reason was her cheerfulness, and her ability to make people smile. She was the only person who could make people laugh during the Great Depression, which was quite a feat. Finally, Shirley had been famous for her whole life, from age three to her death in 2014,

which is extremely impressive and quite hard to accomplish. Shirley Temple with her mother, Gertrude Temple.

Am I growing up too fast? - Shirley Temple Dear Shirley, If you think you’re too busy, then of course you can always step down from all your acting. Don’t feel pressured to keep going. But think about it, could you manage without it all? I mean, quitting acting, dancing, singing… That’s what you love to do! You might feel overwhelmed, like your career is too much, and that’s completely normal. Maybe try spending some more time with your family, and try to make good friends that you can play with and feel comfortable around, so your life won’t seem as crazy. Courageous Curie The Courage of Marie Curie March 28 2014

Fun Facts about Mini Marie Curie Everyone was once a child. Youngest of five, Marie Curie was born in Warsaw on the 7th of November 1867. But tragedy struck early; she lost her mother when she was only 11. Marie was a top student in her secondary school and wanted to continue her studies, but her family lacked the financial resources needed to pay for an official degree, so she made a deal with her sister ; her sister would go to school while Marie worked to support the family, then they would switch. Her childhood shows that you do not need to come from a wealthy family to be smart.

Marie Curie

The Acts of the Amazing Marie Curie Science is a subject widely explored by both genders, although it wasn't always so. Marie Curie was one of the first woman to break the 'men only' superstition. She discovered Polonium and Radium and thanks to her studies we know the dangers of radioactivity and the precautions needed to stay safe. Mrs. Curie also invented the x-ray, which saved many people and is still used today. That truly is amazing.

Why I Chose Marie Curie There are many great people in the world that I could have chosen. I chose Marie Curie because I find her life very inspirational. She proved that women are just as smart as men. Marie managed to achieve greatness with few financial resources at a time when intelligence in woman was discouraged. Curie also made many scientific breakthroughs. That is remarkable. Marie Curie's Nobel Prize

1891 Left Poland to study at Sorbonne in Paris.

1898 Discovered new radioactive element : Polonium

1903 First woman to receive Nobel Prize

1902 Produced a decigram of pure Radium

1911 Received second Nobel Prize

Time line Time lines can be created to explain a series events in a visual way. In 1891, Marie Curie finally got to complete her dream of going to university. The year 1898 was the year she discovered polonium. 1903 was the year she was awarded a Nobel Prize for her efforts in physics. Marie Curie produced a decigram of pure Radium in 1902. She was awarded a second Nobel Prize in 1911, this time for chemistry. That's a very eventful life.

Advice Column

Q:

I just got a letter saying I won this year's Nobel Prize for physics. I am very happy that the scientific world is appreciating my efforts, but I am worried about how the public will react. Science has always been a men-only subject. What will the public do when a female name is called at the ceremony? I am worried for my family's safety as well as my own. What should I do?

A:

It is hard to be the first to make a stand. Believe it or not, your efforts will change the course of history. You will clear a path for many more great women. For now, straiten your back and keep your chin up. Accept that award and be your self. It's about time women got a shot at being on top

Parent Quote

Marie Curie makes a great role model for the younger generation. She was a pioneering scientist who made many great contributions and had to overcome acceptance of her work because of her gender. In particular, young women can look up to Marie Curie for inspiration in scientific studies. By studying her life, the younger generation can branch out into learning about radiology and medicine. As a Nobel laureate, Marie Curie is an inspiration to all on human achievement and success.

Edwin Hubble: The Man Who Never By : Sandra C. Stopped Dreaming As soon as the name Hubble comes up, the Hubble Telescope comes to mind, but does it ever interest anyone who it’s named after and why? Edwin Hubble had many accomplishments throughout his life but the main discovery that he made was that he determined that there are more galaxies beyond our Milky Way and our galaxy isn’t the only galaxy in the Universe. Edwin was able to show that what people thought were nebulas, were actually islands of stars that were far beyond our own galaxy. Another accomplishment that Edwin made was discovering that the Universe is expanding. He discovered that by measuring the distances and the motions of the galaxies and he surprised everyone, including Albert Einstein. The last discovery that he made was that if a galaxy is farther away from Earth, the farther it appears to move away. All of Edwin Hubble’s discoveries led to a new mind-blowing theory which was called the Big Band theory, which is that the Universe began with a big burst of energy at one moment a very long time ago and the universe has been expanding ever since. Edwin made amazing accomplishments that expanded our vision on the mysteries of the universe.

A photograph of Edwin and his cat, Nicholas Copernicus, behind an armillary sphere, and next to an orrery.

Lawyer or Astronomer? Everybody has expectations for children in life , and Edwin wasn’t an exception. Edwin’s father, John Hubble, never liked the fact that Edwin was interested in astronomy, rather then law, so when his father was in his bed, dying, Edwin made a promise to continue learning law, but soon enough, he broke the promise and advanced into astronomy. But if he hadn’t made that promise, we wouldn’t have the knowledge that we have today. Edwin excelled in sports, particularly track and field – when he was in high school, he broke the Illinois state high jump record. One day, Edwin brought home a tiny, black and furry cat, and as soon as Edwin saw him, he named him Nicholas Copernicus, another stargazer. They had a special relationship, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t because Edwin really believed that everybody deserved self-respect, so he decided that Nicholas needed a cat door, pipe cleaners and Nicholas’s own reserved spot on his master bed. Nicholas was a special cat and he had different qualities, for example, for his gratitude, he liked to give them dead mice or lizards and when he didn’t approve of a visitor, he made sure the visitor understood what he was saying. Edwin was following John Hubble’s expectations but soon enough, the dreams of one of the greatest astronomers’ seemed more important for once.

The Actions that Inspired Me Edwin Hubble he has done and discovered so much about the Universe. He is the reason why we have so much information about the Universe and mankind took a giant leap because of his discoveries so we wouldn’t have known so much about the mysteries of the Universe without him. Edwin is a good role model for me because he proved to me that each person has their own life and they can decide what to do with it, whether follow your dreams or live for somebody else. A lawyer seemed like a great idea one time but he always had a passion for astronomy and in the end, he choose what his heart wanted. This teaches people to follow their dreams, live doing what they want to do, but mainly, it’s never to late to try to discover whom you really are and what you want to do with the rest of your life. Another reason why I choose him was he isn’t as well known as Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein, but when people talk about him and his discoveries, more people learn who he was and how he made an impact on the world, so I truly believe his name should be remembered for a very long time. “The history of astronomy is a history of receding horizons.” – Edwin Powell Hubble

Edwin Hubble’s timeline:

1889 – 1899

1906 – 1912

1915 – 1917

1923 – 1942

On November 20th, 1889, Edwin Hubble was born in Marshfield, Missouri.

Edwin recieved a scholarship to the University of Chicago. After graduating in 1910, he went to study at the University of Oxford where he studied law.

Edwin finally realized that he wanted to learn about astronomy for the rest of his life, he decided to go and serve the country for World War One.

In October, he made a discovery that what people thought were nebulas, were actually islands of stars. His biggest accomplishment was in 1929 when he discovered the Universe is expanding.

1953 Edwin passed away on September 18, 1953. He was 64 years old when he passed away.

Edwin’s memorable life Edwin looking through the Hooker telescope, where most of his discoveries were found.

Dear Sandra, Hello!

There’s something that concerns me. I spend most of my time at observatories, trying to get a few photos of the Universe, but the concern is that the Earth’s atmosphere stands in the way. It causes stars to twinkle and it makes it difficult to see faint and distant stars. Do you know what I should do? I feel like there’s something we do not know yet, and I feel that there is something beyond our knowledge.

- Edwin Hubble

Dear Edwin, Hello,

Edwin Hubble provided the world with a lot of information about the mysteries of the universe. Edwin had a good childhood, except for the fact that his father kept expecting so much of him, but at the age of ten, Edwin, his parents and his seven siblings moved to Chicago. When Edwin was graduating high school, Edwin received a scholarship to the University of Chicago, where he was a lab assistant to Robert Millikan, a man who received a Nobel Prize for his work in the field of physics. While Edwin was in Oxford, he realized his true passion, which was astronomy, and decided to return to the University of Chicago and study astronomy. Unfortunately, World War One was happening, so he served France for a bit and then returned to the US. Of course, Edwin had many accomplishments, but everyone was really shocked when they heard that the Universe was expanding. Hubble suffered from a stroke, which was caused by cerebral thrombosis, in 1953. “ Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls his adventure Science.” – Edwin Powell Hubble.

Yes, the Earth’s atmosphere is a problem to most astronomers. It’s a fluid and it is mixed with gas and dust, which makes the visible light very blurry. A great idea is to go to a very high point, for example a mountain, and try to see the Universe from there. The reason why is because it minimizes the effects of the atmosphere and also, its farther away from the city lights. Where there is more pollution, it is harder to see stars, because of the layers of Carbon dioxide. Hopefully you’re right about they’re being something beyond our knowledge and I wish you good luck!

- Sandra

« I hope our children could choose an honourable profession, just like Edwin Hubble did, and make the world a better place.” - Inna C. The Hubble telescope was named after Edwin Hubble, but the Hubble telescope has been able to capture many sights of the Universe, for example black holes & super novas. Hello! My name is Sandra and I’m a student at Glenview Senior Public School. When I was 6 years old, I developed a talent of balancing a spoon on my nose and my record of keeping it on my nose is 2 minutes! Also, when I was six years old as well, I moved from a country named Moldova, which has an area of 33,846 km2. Back in Europe, I used to love to preform with a group of kids and my favourite part was that we got to dress up in really fancy dresses.

MICHAEL “PINBALL” CLEMONS : THE OTHER SIDE OF A PLAYMAKER Early Life and Career

Contributions to the World Michael was a huge part in launching the Argos Foundation Stop the Violence in 2005. He was named Chair of the Youth Challenge Fund by premier Dalton McGuinty, and also launched the Michael Pinball Clemons Foundation (MPCF) in 2007, in which he made a goal to build 131 schools in third would countries, in 5 years. The MPCF has surpassed that goal and has now attempted to double it. Aside from all of this, Clemons also plays a huge role in the Free the Children organization as he speaks at We Day every year, and helps out with many fundraisers to motivate kids and teens to be the best they can be and help other youth around the world.

As a child, Michael didn’t necessarily have it “easy”, but he, nor his mother, who had him at the age of 18 ever complained. Growing up in the projects of Florida, his mother’s mother passed away when she was 5 due to issues with pneumonia and 2 years later, her grandmother passed away from complications from tuberculosis, so he lived with his great-great grandmother, who had gone blind around the time he was born. Although that wasn’t easy, Michael soon found his first love, football. He had his first jersey retired at a local restaurant by the age of 11. Although he didn’t have it easy, his family definitely made it work.

The Reason Behind the Inspiration I chose Michael Clemons due to the fact that he’s an incredibly admirable role model whom I really aspire and intend to take on after, as he’s a man of his word. When he said that he was setting a goal to build 131 schools in 5 years, he accomplished, and exceeded that goal. He’s a strong believer in practicing what he preaches. He treats everyone with equality and respect no matter what the circumstances, and is a man of integrity. He’s also a family man. He takes pride in mentioning his wife, Diane, and three children, Rachel, Raven, and Rylie every chance he gets, and that’s an amazing quality that not many people these days have. This is why I chose and believe that Michael Clemons is a role model to youth and society as a unit.

“We are no good alone. Life is about people, and we are best when we work together. Everybody specializes in different things so that we can work as a community to help one another, and then succeed in life together.” -Michael “Pinball” Clemons

Clemons is always quick to talk about, and thank his mother no matter what. He explains her to be the reason he is where he is today and how he got here. Having him at 18, she struggled but never ever complained. She made it work for him to be the humble man of integrity that he is. His friend and teammate while playing for the Argos, Doran Major, was also someone whom he went to for guidance and the feeling was definitely mutual between the two. There were many other people including coaches and friends whom Michael describes as people who believed in him more than himself and who helped to shape and create the man that Michael Clemons is today.

ARGONAUTS

“I believe that Michael Clemons is an incredibly inspirational man. He is aware of the fact that children are the future of our generation and respects everyone that he comes into contact with. He has much to do with my and many other peoples’ lives, and I know that people all over the world have been inspired and helped due to his meaningful work. Also, Michael's contributions have and will continue to touch many people's lives, and for this simple yet powerful fact, Pinball has my vote as an inspirational member of society.” -Davinder. D

Dear Michael, A few of my best friends are victims of bullying. Cyber, verbal, and social. What do you think is the issue here, and how can this be resolved, as it’s a Sydney, huge issue in today’s generation. Thank you for this message. I realize - Sydney that bullying is a huge issue in today’s youth and even with adults sometimes, and the truth in my opinion is that there’s only about one solution, and that’s respect. A lack of respect towards themselves is what’s making these people say and do what they’re doing. You must first learn to respect yourself, and then as we get a greater understanding of our value, we get a greater understanding of others. Then we realize that those things we did or said really hurt, and they shouldn’t have been done, because we now have a much greater understanding of others and ourselves. Hope I could help  , - Michael

Sydney is a track running, basketball playing, lover of sports. She plays 5 instruments, and she’s quite the shoe fanatic. Her favorite subjects include; English, Phys. Ed and Band. And she also has a goldfish named Mr. Incredible.

EINS TEIN: TH E G REA T TH INKER

HIS AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENTS Energy.

Albert Einstein having fun.

Einstein’s major accomplishments are his contributions to science in the studies of Light, Time and Space, and

In 1905, he came up with the Special Theory of Relativity in which he stated that light is constant and it is not possible to travel faster than the speed of light which is about 300,000 Km/sec. He determined that light energy travels in small packages called photons. Einstein's time/space theory states that time is not constant as is light. The faster one travels to the speed of light, the slower time is, even though that person does not feel the difference at all. He also explained his E = mc2 theory which showed the relationship between energy and mass. As a result of all his work, we benefit from such technologies such as Television, GPS, digital cameras and many more.

EARLY LIFE AND CAREER Einstein had an interesting and weird early life. He was fascinated with his first compass and book, and at the age of 26, he came up with the most famous theory known all over the world. When Einstein was 5 years old, he was amazed of how the compass needle moved with the invisible magnetic field of the earth. He received his first book of Science and Math from a family friend at the age of 10 and he really liked it. In 1905, he invented the Theory of Relativity or E=mc2 which means that the energy of an atom is equal to the mass of the atom times the speed of light (300 000km/sec) squared. Wow, it is not a surprise that he had an abnormally large head and he never liked to wear socks. Einstein’s was bad at math when he was young but became very good at it

THE REASON BEHIND THE INSPIRATION I chose Einstein for 3 main reasons. I love math, science and technology as well. He invented E=mc2 and I thought that was pretty cool how it involves the speed of light. Finally, I like Einstein because he wasn’t good at school at an early age but then he became the most famous scientist in the world. When I first picked Albert Einstein, he seemed that he would be a fun one because of his curious mind and his interesting character. He signed autographs to raise money for charity and he had many suits of the same colour and type!

EINS TEIN Dear Kreher For my next equation, I need to find out what energy is equal to. I have ban working on it for fare to long and I need help. All I do know about it is that energy is very fast so I think it would include the speed of light. I need someone's help to complete the equation and I think you are the guy to do it. Can you help me? Albert Einstein Dear Albert Einstein Of coarse I can help you. I'd love to help you finish the equation that would make you more famous. So, advice from me would be the speed of light squared because energy is fast so it should multiply by itself. Also I would multiply it by it's mass to make it have a form. That is all the information that I can think of. Kreher

EINSTEIN’S TIMELINE

Albert Einstein

1879--March 14-Einstein was born 1905--Einstein Publishes his work on Brownian motion, ideas about light, the Special Theory of Relativity. He receives his Ph.D. and comes up with his most famous equation E=mc2 1916--Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity dealing with space time is published. 1939--Germany invades Poland and World War II begins. Einstein writes to USA president Roosevelt warning about the atomic bomb first discovered by Hitler. 1940--Manhattan Project- USA’s atomic bomb was developed which allowed them to later drop two atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan ending World War II.

A PARENT’S OPINION Excellent choice!! Albert Einstein really was a great thinker. He was a man who thought well ahead of his time. His ideas about atomic theory and space travel is a huge contribution to the scientific community all over the world. Einstein really is a positive role model to our youth today. The science behind his E=mc2 theory is far more valuable and extraordinary than its’ use for the atomic bomb. His phrase “Imagination is more important Einstein had a different way of thinking than knowledge” is an excellent lesson for today’s youth.

This timeline shows Einstein’s life and major accomplishments from 1879-1955. His most world known theory, E=mc2 was developed when he was only 26 years old and his ideas about space and time travel were developed when he was 37 years old. Einstein amazed the world with his thinking, and he was the most popular scientist of his day.
