John Lennon: A Man Who Changed Music

More than just the Beatles For many people, John Lennon was a man who was part of the biggest band in history, The Beatles. Which is of course one of his many accomplishments but is that all that he will ever be recognized for? Yes, The Beatles is absolutely a great accomplishment, they showed people free thought, and introduced the world to rock and roll. Although there is more to John Lennon than there seems, for example, he played a great part in the protest about the Vietnam War. He taught us that we have to stand up for what we believed in. One way he did this was when he and his wife recorded the song “Give Peace a Chance.” Before they knew it, their song became the anti-war song to other people protesting. So maybe there is more to John Lennon than we thought.

hard since she didn’t believe that music was a good career choice. She never approved of John’s choices. Luckily he still kept in touch secretly with his mother and she always tried to help with his music choices. In fact she even taught John how to play the banjo and guitar. But sadly just when things were looking up for John’s music, tragedy struck. His mother was hit and killed by a car when he was just 17 years old.

John Lennon used his fame to send a positive message of hope, peace and unity through his music - John F

A hard childhood Even though Lennon seemed to have a pretty amazing life, before all the fame came, it wasn’t. Lennon suffered from a hard childhood, not everything in his life was as good as it seemed. When he was just 4 years old, his parents separated, his father left and he never had contact with him again. He was then forced to live with his aunt. This was quite hard since she didn’t believe that music was a good career choice. She never approved of John’s choices. Luckily he still kept in touch secretly with his mother and she always tried to help with

Unique, passionate & inspirational Unique, passionate and inspirational were three things that described john Lennon. As part of the Beatles and individually he made a lasting impression on our society. John showed people to believe in themselves and showed people how to express their opinion peacefully. He did this when he was peacefully protesting against the Vietnam War, he wrote a song about peace and it quickly became the anti-war song to many people and at protests. Also John Lennon was a big part of the band that changed music forever by trying new things and taking risks. John Lennon inspired many, when John was th pronounced dead on December 8 1990 after being shot four times in the chest. The news shocked the world. It showed how much when thousands of fans camped outside of his home and sung his songs, everyone around the world was singing his songs; it seemed to everyone that they lost someone they all loved. These are just some of the many reasons why I look up to john Lennon as my role model and someone who made a big impact everywhere in the world.

1957 was the year that the Beatles were starting to form. In this year John Lennon meets Paul McCartney and they both know the other has talent so they decide to make a band together. Paul tells John about another boy he knows from school and on the bus so he asks John about the idea of letting this boy audition for the band, this boy happened to be George Harrison. George officially becomes part of the band in 1958. At the time they had another member of their band, Pete Best, although one day they see a great drummer performing, they immediately know they need this drummer so they ask the drummer, Ringo Starr if he was interested in joining their band. In 1962 Ringo who joins the band replaced Pete Best and they immediately start writing songs together. At this point in time the Beatles haven’t yet to become very well known. Although in 1964 the Beatles made it to the top 100 on billboard for the first time in the Beatles career. For the next six years the Beatles were the most well known band in the world, no one could compare. Although in 1970 the Beatles decide to break up and try solo careers. This shocked many and made so many around the world heartbroken that everyone’s favourite music was not going to continue. Although that want the end of John Lennon’s career, he still continued his career but now solo. In 1971 John Lennon’s solo career sky rocked with his first solo album, Imagine.

John Lennon’s album cover for Imagine

Hello Abbie, So recently the Beatles have broken up but I would like to continue with music, I know the fans want more and even though the Beatles are over I want to give them the music they loved except this time, it would just be my music. Do you think the fans would like that or should I just give up music entirely? Thank you for the help, John Hi John, So it looks to me that you have a passion or music and that music means a lot to you, but you are just not sure you are ready to give it all up just because the band broke up. My advice to you is even though the music would just we you and not the Beatles it could give you a chance to try things that you wanted to do in the past or ideas that the other band members didn’t like. Even though it would just be you I know all the fans would still love your music. Just believe in yourself and take a risk, I’m sure there will be sold out John Lennon albums everywhere. I hope I helped. Abbie

“Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one” A quote by John Lennon said in the song Imagine John Lennon during the time his first album, Imagine came out.

Abbie F is a grade 7 students who goes to Glenview and lives in Canada, some of her hobbies are horseback riding, reading, watching TV, going tobogganing and playing outside when it is nice out with her friends and her brother. Abbie also loves to listen to music so the Beatles have always been one of her favourite bands.

Sir Frederick Banting created the insulin for diabetes. There were four people in this invention; creating the insulin they saved many people’s lives. He graduated from medical school in 1916 during World War I in Europe. In 1922, Frederick was rewarded a Medical Doctorate and he also won a gold medal. Frederick Banting won a Nobel Prize in medicine along with his professor Dr. McLeod in 1923. This amazing scientist was voted one of the most influential Canadians of all time.

Sir Frederick Banting after he created the successful insulin.

How It All Began Frederick Banting was born in Alliston, Ontario on November 14th 1891 on a farm. He had 4 brothers and sisters and was known for having a bad temper. When Sir Frederick Banting was in high school, he nearly failed grade 12. In university he switched from studying to be a minister to a medical doctor.

Sir Banting came from simple beginnings as the son of a farmer to win a Nobel Prize which demonstrates to the younger generation that they can become anything they want to be if they focus and work hard. -Ms. T-R

As a hobby, he enjoyed painting. When he was young he and a Group of Seven studied painting. In World War 1 Frederick Banting worked as a medical officer to help the ones that were injured. Sir Banting died in Newfoundland on February 21, 1941 in a plane crash.

Why is He an Inspiration? I chose Sir Frederick Banting because he is a really good role model not just for me but others, because he was a medical doctor. By creating the insulin Frederick saved the lives of a lot living with diabetes. I’ve always wanted to be a doctor so this really inspired me to be a better doctor. He is a Canadian doctor that is also helped in World War I as a medic. I am proud that I chose Sir Frederick Banting.

Dear Abigail,

Sir Frederick Banting and Dr. McLeod’s Nobel Prize

I have a concern, there were three other people involved in the insulin invention. Their names were MacLeod, Best, and Collop. Only two of us got a Nobel Prize, myself and Professor MacLeod. The ones that I thought worked the hardest didn’t get a Nobel Prize. What should I do? -Frederick Banting Dear Frederick Banting, Wow that’s a really tough situation to be in. I think that you should recognize them with money or by mentioning them in a speech so more people know about their work. This would make them feel honoured as contributors to the insulin. -Abigail

Honest Abe “THOSE WHO DENY FREEDOM TO OTHERS DESERVE IT NOT FOR THEMSELVES.” -ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Abraham Lincoln was a great man because he gave his life to abolish slavery in America. -Margot.W

Accomplishments Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, is very well known for being the emancipator of slavery in the U.S. He was the president that freed the slaves. He was also reportedly the only president who never told a lie and did everything he promised to do during his presidential campaign when he got elected. Abe Lincoln was one of the fairest minded people ever and he thought that everyone was equal. During a wrestling match, he had a competitor that was very self-confident and didn’t realize he was outmatched by Lincoln. Halfway through the match Lincoln’s competitor called it quits and asked for a draw. Instead of Lincoln proving that he was better he agreed to have a draw and the two apparently became very good friends afterwards.

Interesting Facts When young Abraham Lincoln was only 9 years of age his mother tragically died of a sickness transferred by milk. The disease is called tremetol but is most commonly referred to as milk sickness. Children nowadays receive years of education before they are adults but Abe Lincoln only received an estimated 18 months of education in his lifetime. Also, Abraham Lincoln was an avid wrestler. In his lifetime he only lost a recorded 3 matches out of 300. That means if someone were to wrestle him today they would have a 1% chance of winning.

Alex Wolf FI7D March 24, 2014

About the author

Reasons for choice I chose Abraham Lincoln because I wanted to learn more about his life and what he did before he was elected president of the U.S. Another reason is that he is a good role model. All of his personality traits and values seem very good to me and I want to be like him when I’m older. Also, he was the first president to be assassinated in the history of America. I thought it would be interesting to find out why. To see if it was because he freed the slaves, because he was famous or because of his beliefs.

Last summer I went on an 18 day, 305 kilometer canoe trip in northern Ontario. I am a competitive ski racer and I got Honor Roll last year at school.

Concerns He was alive in a time when people didn’t document things often so it may be difficult to find some information on him.

Timeline This timeline shows the big moments in Abraham Lincoln’s life. 1818-Oct 5 Abraham’s mother died.

1830-March Delivers first political speech of his lifetime.

Alex’s Advice Dear Alex, I was wondering what your thoughts were on the crisis in the Ukraine right now with Russia invading Abraham Lincoln

1836-Sept 9 Receives his Law License.

1860-May 18 Nominated to be Republican candidate for the president of the U.S.

1860-Nov 6 Abraham Lincoln is elected 16th president of the United States of America.

Dear Abe, I think that Putin will just keep going further into the Ukraine because nobody’s stopping him. I think he observed what Obama did with the crisis in Syria. Obama said that the red line when they would go in to Syria was when chemical weapons were used but once it was confirmed that chemical weapons were used, Obama had to reexplain that what he meant by red line was that they would no longer tolerate it, not that they would send troops into the conflict. Putin realized that Obama would not do anything so he will just keep playing the bluff.

More than an Olympian: Alexandre Bilodeau By: Alexa M.

The two time Canadian Olympic champion in men’s moguls, Alexandre Bilodeau is more than an Olympic athlete. His brother Frederic was born with cerebral palsy and that is what made Alex the person he is today. Ever since his brother’s disability, Alex has been doing what he can to help his brother, to help other people with his brother’s condition and to make Frederic’s dreams come true. In order to accomplish that he donated $ 25, 000 to the Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres to support research into cerebral palsy. Alex also donates every year to the special Olympicsan Olympics for disabled athletes. Alexandre bilodeau has made many contributions to the world but his brother is the one who made that possible by motivating him to get out of bed in the morning.

Alexandre Bilodeau celebrating with his brother after his gold medal run in Sochi.

From child to champion Ever since Alexandre Bilodeau was born on the 8th of September 1987 he has grown up and lived with his brother Frederic who has cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is caused by brain damage which effects muscle coordination and movement but Alex and Frederic have not let that ruin their lives. As a child Alex played hockey but he was encouraged to start skiing because his brother with cerebral palsy could not skate but he could ski. The whole family would go skiing on the weekends at mount Saint-Sauveur but Alex never enjoyed the sport. Eventually since he was a

natural at freestyle skiing, he finally started to like skiing more and more. Then one day Alex was watching Jean-Luc Brassard win his Olympic gold medal in moguls in 1994 and he realised that is what he wanted to do. From then he started his journey in the moguls. In the Vancouver 2010 Olympics Alexandre Bilodeau was the first Canadian to win an Olympic gold medal at home and in 2014 he defended his title becoming the first men to win gold in moguls two times in a row.

A truly inspirational individual

Alex with his sister Beatrice and his brother Frederic the people who mean so much to him.

I chose Alexandre Bilodeau because not only has he supported many great causes but he is also a great inspiration to young athletes including me. Alex shows that anything is possible if you follow your dreams, he wasn’t always interested in skiing but he gave it a try and realized that’s what he was born to do. Even though he is an Olympian his family is more important to him than winning a gold medal. He demonstrates that his success comes from the heart because one of his biggest motivations is to make his brother proud and to go for all his dreams since his brother can’t. All the great things he does represents Canada as a great country. From his generosity, his success and his heart Alex Bilodeau is a great role model for me and for all Canadians.

Timeline of success Timeline of success 1987

He was born.

We have all shared his joy and pride as a Canadian two-time gold medalist at 2 consecutive Olympics which is a significant contribution to Canadians.

-Tina E.

2004

He joined the national team.

2006

He won his first world cup.

2010

He won the Vancouver Olympics.

2014

He defended his title in Sochi Olympics.

Alexandre Bilodeau is a very successful individual but that all started in 1987. On the 8th of September 1987 his journey of life began. As the years went by he grew up as a hockey player and then as a great moguls skier but it was in 2004 when he decided to join the national team. Alex was 17 at the time and already amazing in the moguls. Sure enough two years later he won his first world cup at Mont Gabriel and became the youngest man to win a world cup event. After that his career went uphill, 2010 was a special year for Alex because that was when he won gold in the Vancouver Olympics and shortly after that he made a donation that meant a lot to him to the Canadian Association of Pediatric Health Centres in support of cerebral palsy which his brother has. Four years after that he defended his title in Sochi and that was also possibly the last competition of his career. Now Alex is planning on going back to school but even if he isn’t a skier anymore he will still do great things.

Ask Alexa Dear Alexa, Ever since 2010 my brother Frederic’s cerebral palsy is slowly manythat many morehis great getting worse but I don’t want to affect life.t My family has already moved into an apartment so there is no stairs for him to fall down and now he feels like he is extra weight for us to carry around even though he isn’t. Frederic is still happy like normal at the moment but I am afraid it might not stay like that. He is my biggest motivation, without him I would not be the same. Since he has done so much for me the least I can do is keep him happy and keep his spirits up; that’s all I want for him. What can I do to keep him happy? -Alexandre Bilodeau Alexa is a grade 7 student at Glenview Senior public school. In her free time she enjoys cooking, baking and eating. One of her favorite things to do is skiing.

hings.

Alex Bilodeau with his hero: Frederic.

Dear Alexandre, That is so great that you care so much about Frederic. My advice is to just keep doing what you are doing now it seems to be working so far. As long as you follow your dreams Frederic will be happy with you. As long as you’re happy he will be happy with you. You have accomplished so much I am sure Frederic is so proud of you. -Sincerely, Alexa

Life Without Limits: Nick Vujičić By: Alexandra K

A picture of Nick, which was used for one of his book covers.

Imagine not having any arms or legs. Well let me introduce to you a brave and wonderful man who lives with both; his name is Nick Vujičić. Despite the fact that he was born with a rare disease (tetra-amelia syndrome) he has visited 44 different countries touring the world as a motivational speaker and has spoken at stadiums, diverse groups such as students, teachers, young people, business professionals and congregations. Nick has also written 4 books; Life Without Limits (2010), Your Life Without Limits (2012), Unstoppable (2012) and Stand Strong (2014.) He was actually inspired to become a motivational speaker because his school janitor suggested it to him and he has now spoken to about 5 million different individuals. Talking to all these different schools and traveling around the world is a non-profit organisation which he calls ‘Life Without Limbs’ and is something he started at the age of 17. Because of all his contributions, he won the young ‘Australian of the Year’ award when he was also 17 and he still to this day continues to address important issues that teenagers are dealing with, in their lives.

“The challenges in our lives are there to STRENGTHEN our CONVICTIONS. They are NOT there to run us over.” ●

Nick Vujicic is positive proof that in life No one knew that Nick would be born without any arms or legs; nothing unusual showed up anything is possible. Limitless boundaries on the ultrasound. But afterwards, the doctor said and exceptional that he wouldn’t even be able to walk, play any sports or do anything that an average child would accomplishments are have the opportunity to do. Nick, of course, is now what Nick embodies in able to play multiple sports such as soccer, golf, everything he does. He swimming and many others. But he wasn’t always serves as an example the happy and confident person he seems to be today. to us all. Sadly, he used to be severely bullied because of his ~ Milos K

physical appearance; it got so bad, that he tried to drown himself at the age of 10. One day while at school, his ganitor came up to him telling him this: “I think that you should speak up about your disability and become a speaker. Even though Nick thought it was a crazy idea, after putting a bit more thought into it he finally decided that’s what he wanted to do. Through God, hope and prayer he became a whole new person.

The reason I chose Nick Vujičić is because of the fact he sends a great message out their that all of us should remember: “ It’s a lie to think you’re not good enough. It’s a lie to think you’re not worth it. Throughout his life, he’s achieved more things then some able bodied people would be able to do. I mean, he plays over 4 sports, finished university at the age of 21, got married, travelled to 44 countries and spoke to over 5 million people and doesn’t even have any limbs. Knowing that there were probably quite a few of people who didn’t know who he was, I also wanted to introduce him and maybe some people would look up his speeches and get inspired. He’s definitely one of my heroes and I wanted people to see and believe that if a person like this can do it and get through all the pain, so can you. Also, I though that he made some nice inspirational speeches about God and hope; he even mentioned that the bible is the reason he persevered and is the reason why he is, where he is today. Nick is an absolutely wonderful person to listen to, who has a great sense of humor and I truly wish him all the best on the rest of his journey.

Nick being hugged by a girl, from the school/group of kids he had just spoken to.

1999 Started his nonprofit organisation ‘Life Without Limits.

2003 Received a double major in accountancy and financial

2005 Won the Young ‘Australian of the Year’ award at the age of 17.

2010 Wrote his first bestselling novel: ‘Life Without Limits.’

The year 1999 was pretty much when it all started; it was the year that Nick spoke to his first group of people and when he decided he wanted to become a motivational speaker. His ganitor (believe or not) is the one who inspired him and is the reason that Nick is who he is today. 4 years later, (2003), he graduated from the Griffith university at the age of 21. As you can already see, Nick graduated with a double major in accountancy and financial planning. Then in 2005, he won the Young ‘Australian of the Year’ award; he was 17 at the time and this helped him realize his full potential, since he won it because of all the contributions he had made. The year 2010 was when he published his first novel ‘Life Without Limits’. It also ended up being a bestselling novel and was named after his non-profit organisation. Finally, at the age of 30 he got married to his wife Kanae Miyahara and they’ve now had one child together.

I wanted to ask about something that was bothering me lately and wanted to see if you could help me. Whenever I go and visit a school I always make sure to talk about Jesus and God and how prayer and the bible helped me become a stronger and happier person. I know that while I’m talking the kids understand and appreciate what I’m saying, but afterwards they would just forget about it. They don’t care about what I said and don’t think religion is important in everyday life. After all, there was only one school (600 students) that I got a note from, saying there were no longer any signs of mal behavior and bullying. What could I do to make these kids get more inspired and possibly become better people?

Humans consist of a body and a spirit and Nick is proof that the spirit dominates and can be made made perfect in bodily weakness. The grace of God is sufficient for us to survive. ~ Natasa K

2012 Got married to his wife Kanae Miya- hara (age 30.)

Nick and wife Kanae, while holding their first (and only) son.

I understand your concern and would truly be honoured to help. In my opinion, it’s extremely important to talk about how God has made an impact in your life and how He has helped you. For ex: talk about how through prayer you got over your depression and became a happier person. Also, to make your speeches even more affective than they already are, mention different stories where kids’ lives were changed because of God and how they became happier/better people. When you talk about bullying, mention how many people are being bullied, how many people have depression and how many people have tried to commit suicide because of bullying. The sadder you make it, the bigger of an impression it’s going to leave. Hope this helped!

Deborah Ellis An Educational, Talented Author

When she was young, Deborah Ellis was a bit of a loner. She lived in her own little fantasy (although she never liked fiction as much as nonfiction.) She liked riding her bike around, building forts, but mostly on her own. There was a graveyard nearby where she liked to explore. When she was about 11, she knew she wanted to be an author. She liked to pretend to be wrapped up in writing so she never had to talk to people. In grade 8 she started high school English, but she had to slow down a bit when she was put in a psychiatric hospital at 14. Getting her books published was hard for her. She got rejected over and over, and she didn't learn to write for publication very fast. When she was young, she wrote a lot of things, stories and plays, although she says they weren't very good. When she was 25 or so she wrote a play that won a competition. She started writing for children when Groundwood had a contest for people who had never written for that age group. She likes writing for children because they can choose who they get to be, make their own decisions. Her first children's book, Looking for X, won an award, but after that, several of her books got rejected Deborah Ellis. again, so she never bragged about her achievement. Although her book The Breadwinner is based on a real person, Deborah Ellis only met the girl's mother. The mother told Deborah Ellis about her daughter, who had disguised herself as a boy to earn money for the family. Deborah Ellis was blown away and inspired, and heard several more tales similar to it since then. A lot of the main events in The Breadwinner are based off stories she heard from people who said they had either witnessed these things or done them. The Breadwinner isn't only sold in English-speaking places, but also many other countries around the world. In several Afghan communities the book was well-received. She does get criticisms like 'children can't handle heavy subjects like this' but chooses not to listen, because that's the way things are happening. The sequel and third book to The Breadwinner were written because Deborah Ellis' dad wanted her to write them.

She Wrote Wrote Wrote A Breadwinner had to do a lot of research, but that was part of Parvana's Looking Company of the fun. It took her a while to get the tone right, Journey for X Fools and she kept restarting the book because she felt the beginnings weren't good enough. It's how they get marked, but Sure Deborah Ellis writes about that's it. It has nothing to do with writing. She likes problems. His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama: Tenzin Gyatso Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th reincarnate of Dalai Lama, has done so much for Tibet’s independence in a way that is completely non-violent. His contributions include putting together a five point peace plan for Tibetan independence and the restoration of peace and human rights in Tibet. Also, among his 150 over award and honours, he has received a peace prize in 1989 for adopting peaceful methods to find a solution for much debated Tibetan issues. Growing up On the 6th of July, in 1935, Tenzin Gyatso was born in Takster, China into a family of farmers. His given name was Lhamo Thondup. At the age of two, when he was recognized as the new incarnate of the 13th Dalai Lama, his name was then changed to Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso. This meaning Holy Lord, Gentle Glory, Compassionate, Defender of the Faith, Ocean of Wisdom. His holiness says that his mother had a total of sixteen children, of which only seven lived. Along with his two sisters and four brothers all seven of them survived their infancy.

Bound to inspire You may be asking: But why would you choose to write about Tenzin Gyatso? Make no mistake; Tenzin Gyatso is most certainly a man to appreciate and to be inspired by. Firstly, he is the rightful religious and political leader of Tibet. Secondly, he believes in non-violent ways of problem solving. Lastly, in efforts of working towards peace between China and Tibet, he has set up hundreds of conferences, lectures and workshops all around the world, demonstrating true courage and perseverance.

Need some Advice? Dear Claudia, As you know I have been striving to gain greater autonomy for Tibet in choosing its political and religious destiny. If you had any suggestions on means or methods on to how to convince the Chinese government to allow this to happen will be greatly appreciated. -Tenzin Gyatso Dear Tenzin Gyatso, Thank you for your question. One suggestion I have for you is to lobby as many different governments as possible, such as the Canadian government, to recognize the Tibetan government in exile. What might happen is that with enough political pressure, the Chinese government will grant the Tibet more autonomy and religious freedom. I hoped that this suggestion helped you out. Regards,

Tenzin Gyatso at age three, about one year after he was recognized as the 14th reincarnate of Dalai Lama.

In most western schools the children don’t get much education on inequality and the importance of education. I feel that this is a really important issue and it should get more recognition. How would do we raise awareness?

BAN KI- MOON A STRONGER UNITED NATION FOR A BETTER WORLD SUPERMAN TO THE RESCUE!! On 2006, Ban Ki-Moon a South Korean candidate got elected in the UN (United Nations) as head secretary to serve until 2016 overcoming Kofi Annan the previous head secretary. After this exciting event, Ban Ki-Moon immediately went to work. He helped people from all over the world to survive on a critical situation of their lives. A few of his most biggest accomplishments over his career was when he helped people after the Haiti earthquake in January 10, 2010 by giving them food, shelter like tents, and care. Another one of his biggest accomplishments was when he went to the South Pacific Islands of Kiribati to help about the climate change, since

ONCE UPON A TIME...... Early in Mr. Ban’s life, he earned a master degree in public administration from John F. Kennedy School of government at Harvard University in 1985.He got the passion in public administration from a trip he won to the White House at the age of eighteen in Washington D.C to meet President Kennedy to talk about the government and how it works. After that trip, Ban Ki-Moon was very eager to start studying about the government, and couldn’t wait to get into one when he grew older. Thirty seven years later, he became a Foreign Policy Advisor for the president of South Korea, a chief national security advisor, deputy minister for policy planning, and director general people standing in front of their UN tents for a head count. of American Affairs. For many years, he servedPhilippine for his own country, and now, he also serves for the UN (United Nation) until 2016.

WHY YOU ASK I CHOSE HIM?

The reason why I chose Ban Ki-Moon is because I wanted

to think of something unique instead of those very famous black people like Martin Luther King Jr. or Sojourner Truth, someone who helps the world in these present days. Mr. Ban is very interested in helping areas that people don’t know about, like on islands. He’s a very responsible man and cares about everyone that is in need. Also, he’s a type of person that would go even through hell to help people even though it’s a very frustrating job. Ban KiMoon is a very intelligent and caring man for the world.

LETTER TO MR.BAN Dear Mr. Ban, Hey, how are you, my name is Eugene. I wanted to talk to about a concern that I had for you. I know that you’re going to serve the UN until 2016, but what if all of a sudden you pass away or decide to retire from age, what are you going to do

“There’s no doubt that Ban Ki-Moon is a wonderful and a helpful man that will lead the world to a better place. Choosing a prominent figure like Ban Ki-Moon was a no-brainer to me. What is interesting here is that Eugene, who was born in Canada, can still relate and be proud of his ethnic origin.” Mr. Lee

Accessing Reading Through Braille Louis Braille invented Braille in 1829. Braille is a system of raised dots that visually impaired people read by feeling with their fingertips. The system has six dots, arranged in different formations, that form letters,

numbers, musical notation and punctuation. Louis Braille’s system allowed books to become smaller, thinner, more easily produced and therefore more affordable. His invention plays a key role in the lives of visually impaired people today and has since the late eighteen hundreds.

Here is the Braille alphabet.

Life Before the Code At the age of three, Louis injured his eye with a sharp tool in his father’s shop. It became infected and the infection spread to his other eye, leaving him completely blind. At the age of ten, Louis received a scholarship to the Royal Institution for Blind Youth in Paris. The schools library had just fourteen books with big raised letters but these books were large, bulky and very hard for the blind students to read.

Here is a portrait of Louis Braille. There were never any photos taken of him.

In 1821 when Louis was twelve, a retired artillery officer named Charles Barbier visited the school and presented his code of 12 raised dots intended for use on the battlefield. The system had not worked for the soldiers, (as they were largely illiterate and the code was too complex) but it inspired Louis. Over the next few years, Louis improved, tweaked and refined Barbier’s code and the result is Braille.

Louis- an Inspiration to All Louis’ invention is very important to the world. His invention makes it reasonable for blind people to read and write and use these tools of communication in their everyday activities. It also makes it easier to learn other things such as science, math and music. Louis persevered and didn’t let the fact that he was blind stop him from creating a system of reading for the blind. Louis proved that despite having a disability like visual impairment, it is possible to achieve greatness.

“ [Louis Braille] made the world a better place for so many other people. With reading, a considerable barrier to learning and communication was lowered for the visually impaired” - Veronica B.

Here is a timeline of the important events in Louis’ life and his invention of braille. He spent his adult life working in the Royal Institution for Blind Youth. Louis lived a simple life and only became famous after his death. His invention has worldwide significance.

Concern Dear Frances, My braille system has been released for quite a few years, but it has not caught on yet. It is not being taught anywhere, not even at the Royal Institution for Blind Youth where I teach, and the public refuses to accept it. Braille seems easy for blind people to learn and use, so I don’t understand why this is happening. What can I do? -Louis Braille

Advice Hello Louis, I understand your concern. I think your system is very well thought out and easy to use. My advice is to attend as many conferences and meetings as you can to discuss braille and convince people of its worth. Train students at your school to use braille and get them to help teach others. Remember that the public is always skeptical of new ideas at first, no matter how good they are. Try not to get discouraged! -Frances Q.

BREAKING BARRIERS– KIM CAMPBELL

Kim Campbell was the 2012 recipient of the order of British Columbia and won the Order of Canada There are many different events that happen when you are young that help shape what kind of person you will become. At a very young age, Kim Campbell became very comfortable in front of a camera because she was sometimes the host of the CBC Junior Television Club series in 1957. This helped her in her career when she was giving speeches or presenting her ideas to the public and media. When she was in secondary school, she was elected to the school council and was the first girl in her school to ever do so. The next stages in life also help

She has experienced many milestones in her career in politics, though her biggest accomplishment was when she became Canada’s 19th prime minister, the first woman to do so to this date. She showed people all around the world that women can do the same job that men do and do it well. As well as being the first female prime minister in Canada, she has also been the first woman to work in all three levels of government; municipal, provincial, and federal. Another one of her accomplishments was becoming the first woman to hold the position of Minister of National Defense. She also held portfolios in the Cabinet; Minister of State for Indian affairs and Northern Development, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, and the Minister of Veterans’ Affairs. There are so many amazing people all around the world that can inspire us to do incredible things.

There are many amazing role models all around the world. I chose Kim Campbell because she has inspired me to be the person I want to be instead of who the world thinks I should be. I remembered the day I learned that the prime minister could be a woman which opened the doors for me to start dreaming about doing a job that women don’t generally do. She has all of the qualities that I wish to have when I am older. Kim Campbell is an incredible and inspiring woman that I feel I can look up to. There are so many people that we can look up to all around the world.

Kim Campbell has done a lot in her political career. At first, she caught the eye of recruiters for the B.C Social Credit Party where she ran a campaign nicknamed kamikaze but was defeated. On October 22, 1986 she was elected to the B.C Social Credit party when they returned to the government with a majority. Then on November 21, 1988 she was elected Member of Parliament for the PC Party where she won with only 269 votes more than the NDP candidate. On February 23, 1990 Kim Campbell became the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, priorities, planning and political minister of British Columbia, where she was the first female to be the Minister of Justice and Attorney in Canada. On June 25, 1993, Prime Minister Mulroney resigned and Kim Campbell became the 19th prime minister, the first woman to this date. Unfortunately, on November 3, 1993, Kim Campbell was not re-elected in the election and ended her time as Prime Minister. Dear Frances, I quite enjoy working with people in Canada and all over the world. Recently, I have started considering starting a charity. I know I will receive support from my family, friends and network of colleagues. I would like some suggestions for the name of the charity and what the charity should focus on. Sincerely Kim Campbell

Dear Kim Campbell, I find that helping everyone is the way to go. My opinion is to start a charity that helps promote education for young women. Donations would go towards education for women in political science for example. I think that if you were to start a charity, I would call it Kim Care because it is catchy and it connects you to the organization. If your plan works out, this organization would be a tremendous contribution, encouraging women to get involved in their communities and to help improve the economy of their country. Sincerely Frances S. Hi! My name is Frances S. I enjoy many things. My favorite colour is lavender/purple. I quite enjoy playing sports such as soccer, swimming and tennis. When I am not playing sports, I enjoy reading and watching television. When I am older, I hope to be a doctor and travel around Europe.

Muhammad Ali: An inspiration to all Major accomplishments Everybody has accomplished many great things in life. Muhammad Ali has accomplished unforgettable things in his life career. He has won a gold medal in the Olympics for light-heavyweight boxing in 1960. Ali did not only focus on his boxing career he was also one of the great leader of the civil rights movements. Everyone has a kind heart it may not seem like it because of their act or their career but that goes to show that you should never judge a book by its cover.

This picture shows Muhammad Ali winning his gold medal in the Olympica

Reasons why I chose Ali Although boxing is a violent sport and most of the athletes are very aggressive, Ali is a person of great accomplishments and has a huge heart for helping people. I chose this individual because he was one of the greatest civil rights leaders of all time, he would go to no limits to fight for what he believes in. Ali has so much self-confidence he believes very strongly of himself and that’s what made him succeed into doing the amazing things he did, and I admire that he has so much self-confidence and that he uses that confidence to be able to succeed in doing great things. Ali did one of the greatest deeds a person could ever do, he helped fight for fairness and the rights for African Americans, while he was doing this deed he almost lost everything his job, his gold medal all his great boxing accomplishments but he never cared all he wanted to facts before do was helpInteresting make the world a better placehe for African Americans. becamfamous Muhammad Ali was just another kid on the streets from Kentucky and now he grew up to be the not only the greatest athlete of all time but a great leader for the civil rights movement.

 Muhammad Ali taught me about courage and what it’s like to believe in something. He also taught me to believe in myself and anything is possible if you believe you can do it. Jennifer T.

Major accomplishments Many famous people have done interesting things before he/she became a star. Before Muhammad Ali became famous he had been married 4 times and he has 7 daughters and 2 sons. Ali´s original name was Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr but he changed his name after to Muhammad Ali after joining the nation of Islam. When Muhammad was a kid he would never ride the school bus like other kids, instead he would try to race the school bus to school every morning. Everybody has done amazing things whether or not their big or small, it doesn´t matter it still counts and we are all fantastic people.

In 1996 Ali was offered the greatest honor of lighting the Olympic torch in Atlanta. In 1997 he was offered two awards worth being proud of, such as the Arthur Ashe award for courage and the essence living legend award. Finally in 1998 (his best award of all) the secretary-general Kofi Annan named Ali a United Nations messenger of peace.

Advice Column Dear Georgia, My name is Peyton. I come from a small town that would never encourage violence. I feel that Muhammad Ali is a violent character that you have chosen his profession is light-heavyweight boxing and I feel that Ali is inappropriate and a bad role model for kids.

Advice Column Hello Peyton I completely understand how you feel about Muhammad Ali being a bad role model. I to felt that he wasn´t the best role-model myself, but I read a little more about him and figured out that he has fought really hard for the way the world is right now and I think that he is a great role- model for kids and I think he could inspire kids around the world to do something as great as he did.

My name is Georgia G, I play badminton for 8 hours every week, I take sewing classes so that I can express my creativity and I have always wanted a dog that is cute and cuddly.

Don´t ever give up. Suffer now and be a champ later Muhammad Ali

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: THE MAN WITH A DREAM By: Hannah M.

A MAN WITH MANY TALENTS Martin Luther King Jr. is an inspiration to everyone. He accomplished so much before he was assassinated, it was truly amazing. In an eleven year period, King travelled over nine million kilometers and spoke over 2 500 different times. He has written five books and numerous articles in newspapers and in magazines. On August twenty eighth 1963, in Washington D.C., Martin delivered his world famous speech „I HAVE A DREAM‟ in front of 250, 000 people to help equalize the whites and the colored. Overall he has done amazing things.

“ Martin Luther King Jr. changed the way that people viewed people of color” - Heather M.

BEFORE THE FAME Even before he became famous, Martin Luther King Jr. had a very interesting life. Born on January 5th 1929 as Michael King Jr., he adopted his name Martin Luther King after the German protestant and religious leader Martin Luther. He skipped grades nine and eleven and entered college at age 15. He was a very popular student and he graduated college with a degree in sociology. Even before he became a public speaker, he was an amazing man. Martin Luther King Jr. was very smart.

A INSPIRATION AND A ROLE MODEL TO ALL As an individual, Martin Luther King Jr. has made a huge difference in this world. I decided to write an article about him because he is a great role model to people young and old. He did something the made a very big difference in this world, he helped stop discrimination all around north America. He helped stop slavery for black people all around the United States. The most important thing is, he changes the world, but he did it all non-violently. He was an amazing man.

April 4 1968: Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated

ADVICE COLUMN Dear Hannah M., I have been thinking, and I decided that I need your help. I know that my speech helped stop discrimination and black slaves, but there are still sings of discrimination all around the world. I need to know how I could get more Caucasians to listen to me, how I could get them to hear what I said. I need them to listen to me because this could change the world if we stopped discrimination entirely. I know that you are against discrimination and black salves also, which is why I need your help.

-Martin Luther King Jr.

Dear Martin Luther King Jr. I thought long and hard about what you said and frankly, this is a hard question to answer. I think the best thing to do in this situation is to try and target the Caucasians who have slaves directly instead of speaking to the general public. That way, they might listen more to what you have to say. You could also try speaking in Canada, believe it or not there were a lot of slaves in Canada and if you went to Canada to speak there, you might have been able to convince more people that discrimination and black slaves are bad. You could also travel more north and west. Also you could do more civil rights demonstrations, which would raise more awareness. - Hannah M.

Connection with the World: Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell was an amazingly brilliant man! What makes this great inventor so brilliant? To start off, he spent many hours teaching the deaf which is a tremendously generous act. His many years of patience and precision led him to the invention of the telephone. To reward his brilliance, he became the president of National Geographic Society from 1896-1906. Alexander Graham Bell

In the early years of Alexander Graham Bell, he had always been very fascinated by the deaf and teaching speech. He started off by teaching at Weston House Academy. He then taught at Somersetshire College. He then taught the deaf at Susanna Hull’s school for deaf children. When Bell opened his School of Vocal Physiology, he started experimenting with the multiple telegraph. Bell came up with the idea and after long hard work, the telephone was finally complete.

There are just so many inspirational acts that would make Alexander Graham Bell an amazing role model. The fact that he invented an object that could connect people all over the world is extraordinary. I am 100% sure that people all over North America are extremely grateful for his invention, including me. Technology might not be the same if it weren’t for him or at least it wouldn’t as advanced. He was super intelligent and is an amazing man to look up to as a role model and inspiration.

Dear Jaime, I was brainstorming on new ideas for the telephone but my mind has drawn a blank. I was wondering if you knew anything about telephones and its designs. Please write back to me once you’ve come up with anything useful. -Alexander Graham Bell Dear Bell, In the future we have touch screens and buttons but I think the telephone would have more buyers if it had an installment that would go into our brain and could tell us where our telephones are at all times so that we could never lose our telephones and we would be able to track them down if they were stolen. -Jaime

Jaime lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is 12 years old. Her dream place to live is in Hawaii right beside the beach. The job she wants the most is to be a psychologist for teenagers.

Sweeter than fiction: Taylor swift By: Juliet. F

Taylor Swift at the red carpet

There are so many people who are amazing and nice and they do charity work too, and you never would have guessed Taylor Swift would do it too. Taylor has a great passion for helping people. First of all she launched a campaign to protect children from online predators, by doing that she helped over 5000 children from online predators and cyber bullies, she did that with the help of Governor Phil Bredesen in Tennessee. Second of all she donated 100,000 to the Red Cross in Cedar Rapids. Taylor has so much money that she could do anything with it, but instead she donates it to charity’s who really needed it way more than she does. Finally she also donated 500,000 for a food relief, she is just so generous. Whoever didn’t know about her and her hidden passion, well now you know.

 Having interesting facts is like having a life. A lot of people have interesting facts, and so does Taylor Swift, she been Taylor’s passion for there, she’s done that there, is probably nothing you could say charities is that she didn’t do. A lot of people had that dream of becoming unbelievable; you just a singer or an actor, and Taylor was one of those people, ever can’t stop her when it since she was a young girl she wanted to be a singer, now she comes to helping is one of the best singers ever, she started of country rock and people now she has turned more into to pop. Taylor has released 8 albums since 2006, and they were and still are very popular. - Rob. M She grew up in Tennessee and that is why she was sort of a country rock singer, then she moved to California and everything changed.

Having a role model is one of the best things you could have, because you look up to them and follow in their footsteps, well you don’t always, but you want to. Of course my role model is Taylor Swift, she seems so nice and generous, and I want to have those traits, I try my best. She is such a great singer; I love so many of her songs, her old ones especially. She is such a great person to the people around her, it’s almost like she would know them. Also she has so much money and she gives it to charity’s which is so nice because usually people would just keep all the money to themselves, but not Taylor. I am so happy that I’m a fan of hers.

BREAKING THE BARRIER: JACKIE ROOSEVELT ROBINSON

THE ONE AND ONLY

Jackie Robinson taking a warm-up swing at a game with the dodgers.

All baseball players play games, most baseball players help their teams win games, few baseball players achieve greatness, but only one broke the colour barrier. Jackie Robinson was the first ever African-American man to play Major League Baseball. Jackie's achievements have changed the game of baseball and defined the league as we know it. He is honoured every year on April 15 when the whole league wears number 42, Jackie's old number, which has been retired by the league. Robinson was an athlete in college as well where he became UCLA's first four-letter man, which means he won a varsity sport championship in four different sports. His enormous talent helped lead the Brooklyn Dodgers to six national league titles and one World Series title. The National League MVP title is also under his belt when he became the Most Valuable Player in 1949. But most amazing thing about him is that he persevered through racism, prejudice and all around hatred towards him and all African-Americans to become a hero.

HE WAS A NATURAL Everybody has a purpose, some people have to go find that purpose for others it is evident right away. Jackie's father left him and his family when he was very young, this was tough for his mother but Jackie doesn't remember his dad. He was very close with his mother, and being the only black family in their block, the amount of prejudice they encountered only strengthened their bond. However Jackie was a natural athlete in many sports such as running, high jumping, football and baseball. Before Jackie played in the Negro leagues for one year and then moving on to the majors, Jackie was honourably discharged from the army where he became even more fit. Fate gave him a chance to do something amazing with his life and he sure did.

The Robinson family; Jackie is standing second from the left.

A HERO ON AND OFF THE FIELD It is very hard to be a baseball player, only the exceptional ones can be amazing, on and off the field. Jackie Robinson is the only baseball player to ever have his jersey number retired by the league this means that his career was so historic, no other player is allowed to wear his number. But before he even came to play in the MLB, the whole world was against him. He was a black baseball player and everybody knew that even if he was the best player in the world, he would have to play in the Negro leagues. It was until the manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey, gave the opportunity to Jackie to play in the MLB that Jackie made his debut after some training; and he encountered a lot of racism there as well. Jackie Robinson is inspiration to all to dream for something that seems impossible. Greatness in sports might seem impossible, but being great is not only about the statistics.

Jackie Robinson rounding first base, base running was the best part of his game.

Jackie Robinson made his MLB debut on April 15, 1947 breaking the colour barrier in baseball.

Jackie Robinson won the National league MVP title in 1949 when he led the Dodgers to a pennant.

In 1955, Jackie Robinson led the Dodgers to a World Series title over the Yankees.

In 1962, Jackie Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of fame, in his first year of eligibility.

The life of any person can be represented amazingly with a timeline. On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African-American in the MLB, breaking the colour barrier in baseball. Then, in 1949 he became the National League MVP and later that year he led the Dodgers to a NL pennant. In 1955, Jackie Robinson led the dodgers to a World Series title. This was Robinson's only World Championship he would ever win. The first year Jackie Robinson was eligible for induction into the hall of fame he was inducted and became the first African-American to be. On April 15, 2004 Jackie Robinson day was officially introduced. Players would wear number 42, Jackie's old number, to honour Robinson's achievements. It is so hard to show the meaning of someone's amazing life but a timeline can do a pretty good job of it.

In 2004, April 15 officially became Jackie Robinson Day. On this day every player would wear number 42.

Jackie Robinson accomplished a landmark achievement that is an inspiration to the world today. ~Rob C.

Dear Justin, I am about to explode with anger; I just don't understand why everyone hates me. Every time I walk on to the field people shout name after name just because I am black and they don't want me in the MLB. Branch Rickey, my manager, keeps telling to hold in my anger and that I can't fight back or things will turn out even worse. Also I think the heckling is finally getting to me, before I was proud every time I walked onto the field but now, it hurts every time I do. In fact just the other day, when I was at bat, the manager from the other team came out onto the field and taunted me. I need some advice and I need you to tell how not to fight back. Jackie Robinson

Dear Jackie Robinson, For starters I am a huge fan and ● I think ● ●what you are doing is extremely courageous. It must be extremely difficult to do what you are doing, and you're doing a great job, but if you want some advice, I can give it to you. Those hecklers who taunt you are like bullies, you have to ignore them because they want you to get angry; it's why they taunt you. Also remember that you have every reason you be proud when you walk on the field because you are the first African-American in the MLB and that is quite an accomplishment. Instead of fighting back physically or verbally I would suggest playing your best and hitting a few homers. Because the best way to get back at people in baseball is hitting a home run and when you're rounding the bases don't be afraid to look up in the crowd and see all the hecklers who are now suddenly quiet. Walter Elias Disney is born on December 5th 1901 into a large family of 4 boys and one girl. He was born in Chicago Illinois. In the year 1920, Walt and his friend U.B. Iwerks work for the Kansas city slide company, and name the films Laugh-O- Grams. The year 1930 was a big year, because it was the year Walt Disney and U.B. Iwerks made a comic strip where Mickey (Mortimer) Mouse made his first appearance. 1937-1938 were also great years, because the Disney studios were expanded and Walt put deposit down on property of Burbank, CA, the current location of the Disney Studios. Those years, Snow White earned 8 million dollars and won an Oscar. Sadly, on December 15th, 1966, Walt Disney dies at 9:35 am from an acute circulatory collapse.

I like to hang out with my friends on my free “ time and I love bunnies. I really like going on vacations. I have 16 first cousins. I love my family and I love to spend time with them!

Dear Maddy, my name is Walt Disney. I am trying to build a new theme park, but I don’t know where to put it. Where would I be able to attract the most people? Any suggestions? Thank you. -Walt Dear Walt, thank you for your question. I think it would be a great idea to make a new theme park in Canada somewhere, because you would attract more people from Canada and around the world. Some Canadians don’t like to travel far, or out of the country, so they have, like me, never been to Disneyworld. So, if there was one in Canada, you would attract Canadians and people who live closer to Canada. I hope I answered your question! - Maddy

Dreams Do Come True:

Walter Disney is an amazing man who started making short animated movies from a young age. You probably recognize his name from the movie production company, Walt Disney. After he started making movies, he eventually started the company. For his famous short animated films, Walt Disney has won a total of 26 academy awards; the most in history. He also has won the most Oscars in one year in history, which is 4 in 1954.

Walt Disney’s original name for Mickey Mouse was mortimer mouse, but his wife, Lillian Disney changed it to Mickey Mouse.

Even though you probably know who Walt Disney is now, you probably don’t know much about his childhood. Walt had an early interest in art, and would often sell his drawings to neighbors to earn extra money. He also joined the Red Cross, because he was too young to be in the military. At the Red Cross, he was sent overseas to France, where he drove an ambulance for a year and chauffeured to Red Cross officials. Later on, he made a series of short animated films for the Newman theater chain with U.B Iwerks called Newman’s Laugh-O-Grams.

Walt Disney is a very inspirational man and choosing him was not a mistake! He inspires me to believe in myself when I can’t do something. Also Walt followed his dreams by making the movie company he always wanted, and he makes me want to follow my dreams. I think that Walt had a great idea and was committed to make it happen, so next time I have a good idea I’ll be thinking of him. Another reason I chose him is because when every child is young they watch Disney movies, and without Walt Disney, they wouldn’t have had that experience. Although Walt Disney has passed away, the Disney movies are still enjoyed by everyone.

“Mr. Disney was a pioneer in the field of animation. His contributions were substantial, although his movies were not necessarily realistic, they are entertaining.

CREATIVITY BEYOND COMPARISON: Rube Goldberg The Man Behind it All Rube Goldberg had many accomplishments in his life. He was a founding member of the National Cartoonist Society, a political cartoonist and a Pulitzer Prize winner. The National Cartoonists Society is an organization of professional cartoonists in the United States, Rube was elected president and the purpose of this society is to encourage interest in the art of cartooning. A political cartoonist is an artist who draws editorial cartoons that contain some level of political or social commentary, as one of them he was. Mr. Goldberg received his Pulitzer Prize, an award for great achievement in American journalism, literature, or music, for writing a cartoon known as “Peace Today” which talks against the use of atomic weapons. However Rube Goldberg is best known for his Rube making a sculpture wild inventions, a Rube Goldberg contraption does a simple task in a complicated way using wheels, gears, canary cages, boots and much more. Rueben Garret Lucius Goldberg (1883 – 1970) was a prize winning cartoonist, engineer, inventor, sculptor and an author, he wrote 4 different books his first was Foolish Questions followed by Chain Reaction, The Best of Rube Goldberg and Bobo Baxter the Complete Daily Rube and his Family Strip 1927-1928, Rube even made a movie called Soup to nuts.

A Few Steps Backwards in the Life of a Genius Someone who had an interesting life from the very start was for sure Rube Goldberg. As a child he really loved art but his parents kept putting him down saying that drawing was a bad idea. This didn’t bother Rube though, since he decided to keep drawing. At the age of 7 he copied every piece of art that he could find from colouring books to small photos on calendars. Mr. Goldberg went to colleague to become an engineer, after graduating from the University of California he went to work for San Francisco’s water and sewers department. He didn’t like this job at all and didn’t know where to go from there until his father reminded him of what he always loved most... art. Rube then got a job in San Francisco’s newspaper company and he kept submitting cartoons until he was finally published. Rueben was then to become a famous cartoonist well known throughout the entire United States. Rube Goldberg a Mastermind and a Model Art wise, Rube Goldberg is one of the best role models. He Self - portrait influences creativity for kids and adults because his drawings suit all ages. Rube always pursues his dream. Even though he went to school to become an engineer he became famous for his art which was always his desire. When he was a child his parents kept telling him that there was no point to draw, however Rube decided not to let this thought take over and he decided to keep drawing. Everything is possible when you believe in yourself and no matter what, never give up. Mr. Goldberg always believed in himself if he couldn’t achieve his goal he was determined to keep trying. Now you understand why Rube is a good role model.

The Evolution of the Art

Mosquito exterminator (1912) First Rube Goldberg invention

You can’t miss it (1930) Baseball cartoon

Self-operating napkin (1931)

Peace Today (1948) Pulitzer Prize cartoon

Pencil Sharpener (1970) Last cartoon

Rube Goldberg was a very accomplished cartoonist. His very first “Rube Goldberg Invention” was published on the 7th of July 1912; this cartoon was the mosquito exterminator, he created it because just like all other people Rube had enough of them. In 1930 Rube made a baseball cartoon that talked about baseball season it was called “You can’t miss it”. He then created the “Self-operating napkin” in 1931 another one of his Rube Goldberg cartoons. Goldberg also received a Pulitzer Prize in 1948 for his well-known cartoon “Peace Today” which talked about atomic weapons and why they are so detrimental. Finally during Rube’s last year of life in 1970 he made one of his last drawings in his career, “The pencil sharpener”. That is to say, Rube Goldberg achieved his life’s dream to become an artist and he followed through with that dream right until the very end. Ask Maksim Dear Maksim, Children don’t like my drawings; I always try my best to make them enjoyable for kids but in the end I’m not successful. This is why I’m asking you to tell me what I can do to change them. You’re a kid so you should have at least one suggestion. Sincerely, Rube Goldberg Dear Rube Goldberg, If you ask me I always liked your cartoons, nobody ever had such a creative idea that completes a simple task, one thing I suggest is that maybe you add a joke to make kids laugh or even have those cartoons actually work so that kids can see it in action. I say this because a good joke never hurts and if you see something in action it’s much more interesting then when it’s drawn. However your political cartoons might not be loved my children because they get confused when they read it since the topic may be difficult to understand. Sincerely, Maksim

Andy Dehart in front of one of the exhibits in the newly opened Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada

During your childhood years, you could do a lot of crazy stuff. When Andy Dehart was a kid, while making a fort out of a cardboard box, a brown recluse spider came in and bit him. He was quite scared. One year later he was in Florida with his family, he went scuba diving and had his first encounter with a shark. The next year in Florida again, he had a close encounter with the jaws of a tiger shark. From that moment on, he knew he wanted to be a marine biologist and study sharks.

A lot of people have different opinions on who has made a positive impact on the world. I think Andy Dehart has made a big impact on the world. He does this by teaching people to think of sharks not as mindless killers, but as graceful ocean creatures. He has helped reduce the overfishing of sharks worldwide. Andy travels worldwide teaching people to understand about the good side of sharks. I think these are some things that can impact the world greatly.

I chose Andy Dehart because he has inspired me a lot. These are my inspirations: I want to be a marine biologist. I would like to visit his aquariums; including the National Aquarium in Washington, D.C and the new Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada. I also want to learn more about sharks.

To anyone, The staff and I have been thinking about some ways to catch sharks without harming them. Do you have any suggestions? Director of Ripley’s Aquarium, Andy Dehart Charlene. R says about Andy Dehart

“It must take a lot of courage to work with sharks capable of easily injuring you badly so much!”

To Andy Dehart, Why not try to use curved hooks, without barbs, which will catch on the side of a shark’s big mouth without puncturing them. A sharp fishing hook through the side of their mouths is too damaging. From, The Episodes of shark week Andy Dehart has been in over the years

The Greatest Theory of All Time Charles Darwin developed the theory of ‘Evolution by Naturel Selection’. It is a very simple idea that could explain how all life on earth was formed. Charles Darwin first developed this theory during a trip to the Galapagos Islands where he noticed that birds on different islands were almost identical but had adapted to live on their island differently. He also noticed strong similarity between humans and monkeys and questioned whether there might have been a common ancestor. The theory of evolution was not accepted because the ideas were many years ahead of the time and questioned accepted beliefs. The theory of ‘Evolution by Natural Selection’ may be one of the greatest and simplest theories of all time.

Charles Robert Darwin (1809- 1882)

Why Was Darwin Special?

The 5 year trip on the Beagle that first inspired Darwin to think about the theory of evolution.

Charles Darwin was not thought of as a genius but he was a deep thinker, a hard worker and open to new possibilities. When Charles Darwin published his book “The Origin of Species” in 1859 it received a very negative response from many people in very high positions. He was criticized because his book questioned the strong beliefs held at that time. Despite much criticism, Darwin held on to this ideas to the end. The ideas of 1859 are still discussed and strongly debated today.

Early Life and Career Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in England to a wealthy family. When he was 26 years old he was invited to go on a 5 year trip to the Galapagos Islands on a boat called the Beagle, to do research. It was here that his ideas of evolution were first realized. He continued to work on these ideas for the rest of his life. He was shy and tended to avoid mixing with the society in London. He was also an invalid and spent a lot of time in his house doing experiments. He had contacts all over the world with whom he would write to and debate his ideas. Charles Darwin died 1882 and will always be remembered for his theory of Evolution by Natural Selection.

Theory of evolution: Was there a common ancestor?

“He stood up strongly for what he believed and was prepared to take on established dogma. This took a lot of courage.” – Roger B.

Dear Maxwell, It is 1862 and I am an astronomer and I wonder how humans came into being. I came across the theory of evolution the other day and shared Darwin’s ideas with my friends. To my surprise, my friends seemed very insulted and asked me to go away. Could you explain why they might feel insulted? Your friends could take offense because the theory says that humans evolved from animals. They might not like the idea that humans share a common ancestor with apes and monkeys. The theory also says that all living things are always changing and some people believe that living things have been the same since the beginning of time. I’m sorry your friends didn’t want to talk about this. Tell them it’s a theory and it’s their choice to believe it or not.

“His ideas were ahead of his time. The concept of evolution was so simple and easy to understand yet the debate is still alive, spanning both scientific as well as non-scientific disciplines today.” - Roger B.

Terry Gou-The Man Behind The Money Gou’s Major Accomplishments’: Terry is the founder of Hon Hai Priscion aka Foxconn. Foxconn is a network that made many electronics like Xbox PlayStation and so on. This network is now worth 5.1 billion dollars. It also Apple’s biggest distributors. As well as it being the biggest manufacturing networks in the WORLD!!!

This photo is of Foxconn.

Before The Fame: Gou grew up in China. He was born October 8th 1950 in Banquio Township, Taipei County. Till he was 24 he worked at a rubber factory. Terry’s first wife Serena Lin died of cancer. His brother Tai Cheng Gou also passed from cancer. Gou has 4 kids. Not all of his children were with his first wife Serena. This is Gou with his first wife Serena Lin

Role Model? One of the main reasons I chose Terry was because he has contributed so much to our society. He has created some of the best electronics to date. So many people rely on these electronics. If he didn’t create all these products who knows what are society would be like today. He came from a small town in China and now has a 5.1 billion dollar company. I think that shows that really you can do anything you put your mind to. So in conclusion I think he made a very positive impact on the world and is a very good role model for any young people looking to be a successful business owner. Not just for young business owners but for anyone.

In 1980 he was allowed to make joysticks for other games

In 1988 he opened hi s first factory

Now he owns a very successful company worth 5.1 billion$

Craig.S thinks about Gou “I think this person demonstrates innovation and hard work to build a successful company”

Dear Megan We are having a lot of our workers committing suicide. This problem has been losing business which obviously is not good for this organization. We had some ideas but really weren’t sure. We aren’t sure if it’s from work but if it is we would like your advice to prevent this from happening. Please let us know Terry Gou

Gou is not only founder of Foxconn but is also the head chairman.

Dear Terry Well this seems to be quite a serious situation. I think one way is making work more enjoyable. I do realize it’s a work space but maybe make the things more colorful and fun more enjoyable to around. Also maybe being more interactive with your workers and being more welcoming and friendly may not only make work more enjoyable but it may also want more and more people to work for Foxconn. Hope it help Megan

The big tech wiz- Bill Gates

The big tech wiz – Bill Gates What would the world be like now without any computers? Bill (William) Gates was born on October 28th in Washington, DC. He was born into an upper- middle class family and had two loving sisters, Libby and Kristianne. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a very athletic person. First, he got into computer programming when he was 13 at his school and few years later, he and his friend Paul Allen made a tic-tac-toe game which

He also had been given a knighthood from the Queen for his big company for helping out in countries that are very poor. He has spent 6 million dollars on poverty and helping people in developing countries. He was also in “one of the top 200 people who helped the world be a better place” magazine. In 2004 Gates thought that there will never be spam but he was wrong. He had provided 28 billion dollars to charities. I chose Bill Gates because I think he inspired a lot of people with creating and innovative technology. He never stopped believing in his company and he kept on trying to work on it harder until it actually became a company. He is a good role model for those who make computer software

When Bill Gates was 13, they had a class where there were computers and that is how he started enjoying the programming. Bill Gates and Melinda French eloped on New Year’s Day in Hawaii and they have three kids and from all of the success of Microsoft, his company is worth $6.3 billion dollars. Advice column: Bill Gates was 19 in his Porsche 911. He and Paul Allen were driving over the speed limit and he didn’t even have a license. This happened in Albuquerque and he had to pay up to 1000$ but it wasn’t hard because he became very wealthy in his early and later years. He has had other charges in driving in 1989 for driving over the speed limits and other things. One time, the police thought that he was drunk and driving but they weren’t right. Question: If I was in your shoes, I would be scared of what people think of me badly when if I got charges for illegal things; how did everyone react to you when they heard about your charges? Well, some people were surprised because I have never done such a thing in my life. My parents were utterly shocked when they heard my charges and they were mad at me for only a couple of days. I knew I had to stop this because people around the world would think that I would do that again but I won’t. – Bill Gates

Shakespeare: The Creator of our Modern Language William Shakespeare was a very successful person. He

Shakespeare’s work was quite extraordinary.

made at least 37 plays in his whole life, which have brought joy to not only the people in his era, but even now, nearly 500 years later. Shakespeare also wrote 154 sonnets and 4 long poems. A sonnet isn’t just a type of poem, it is a very complex poem with 14 lines in iambic pentameter (a rhythm of five meters) and to think that he wrote 154 of them is truly incredible. Shakespeare has invented and rewritten over 1700 of our common words such as dauntless, tranquil, gnarled and many more. William Shakespeare has definitely changed our English language for the better and is therefore a very important figure in English literature.

An Interesting Life Shakespeare had a very interesting life, even before he wrote his famous plays. As smart as he was, William Shakespeare did not attend university simply because his parents didn’t have the money. His father struggled in serious financial debt. Instead of going to university, Shakespeare married a woman named Anne Hathaway at the age of 18. She was 8 years older than him. Before he wrote his plays, he focused on writing poems and sonnets. When most people think of Shakespeare, they think of plays and theatre, but he really did much so more than that.

Shakespeare has provided vast insight into the understanding of mankind. -Paul K.

A Good Role Model William Shakespeare in his younger

days.

William Shakespeare is a very good role model to people studying or choosing a career in English literature. I think he is very important to our English language because of all his accomplishments; inventing new words, writing plays, writing sonnets, writing poems and so on. I also love all his plays because they are very intriguing and interesting. Especially King Lear and Romeo and Juliet. People can relate to his characters in his plays because the characters are real individuals as oppose to simple people only playing their specific role in life. In most stories, you don’t really have an insight to what the characters are actually thinking and feeling, but in Shakespeare’s you definitely do. Shakespeare’s major accomplishments have affected our lives for the better.

William Shakespeare Timeline 1582 On November 28th, 1582, at the age of 18 years old, William Shakespeare married his 26 year old wife, Anne Hathaway.

1590 In 1590, Shakespeare wrote his first play, Henry IV, Part One.

1609 In !609, he got his 154 sonnets published Thomas Thorpe.

1613 Shakespeare composed his final plays; Henry VII, Two Noble Kinsmen and Cardenio (now believed to be lost) in 1613.

1616 After William Shakespeare died at the age of 52 years old, he was buried on April 25th, 1616 with a curse written on his grave for anyone who moves his corpse.

Shakespeare’s Development From Marriage to Death Shakespeare has done many substantial things, here is a timeline indicating some important years for him. He evolved from a poem writer to a very famous play writer. William Shakespeare wrote most of his plays in the middle of his life. He was very successful and accomplished a lot. When he died he had a curse written on his grave so that no one would move or disturb his dead body. An older portrait of Shakespeare.

My Problem

Dear William,

Dear Nicolette, I am always having trouble for people to approve my plays, like the Queen for example. Do you know if there is anything I can do to make it easier for those people to approve my plays? Sincerely, William Shakespeare

To make it easier for people like the Queen to approve your plays, you can find out what they enjoy and write plays based on that. Make plays that you know will flatter them. For example, if the Queen is approving your play, you can find a way to compliment her in it. I hope I helped! Yours truly, Nicolette

Marie was a top student in her secondary school and wanted to continue her studies, but her family lacked the financial resources needed to pay for an official degree, so she made a deal with her sister ; her sister would go to school while Marie worked to support the family, then they would switch. Her childhood shows that you do not need to come from a wealthy family to be smart.

Marie Curie

The Acts of the Amazing Marie Curie Science is a subject widely explored by both genders, although it wasn't always so. Marie Curie was one of the first woman to break the 'men only' superstition. She discovered Polonium and Radium and thanks to her studies we know the dangers of radioactivity and the precautions needed to stay safe. Mrs. Curie also invented the x-ray, which saved many people and is still used today. That truly is amazing.

Why I Chose Marie Curie There are many great people in the world that I could have chosen. I chose Marie Curie because I find her life very inspirational. She proved that women are just as smart as men. Marie managed to achieve greatness with few financial resources at a time when intelligence in woman was discouraged. Curie also made many scientific breakthroughs. That is remarkable. Marie Curie's Nobel Prize

Time line Time lines can be created to explain a series events in a visual way. In 1891, Marie Curie finally got to complete her dream of going to university. The year 1898 was the year she discovered polonium. 1903 was the year she was awarded a Nobel Prize for her efforts in physics. Marie Curie produced a decigram of pure Radium in 1902. She was awarded a second Nobel Prize in 1911, this time for chemistry. That's a very eventful life.

Advice Column

Q:

I just got a letter saying I won this year's Nobel Prize for physics. I am very happy that the scientific world is appreciating my efforts, but I am worried about how the public will react. Science has always been a men-only subject. What will the public do when a female name is called at the ceremony? I am worried for my family's safety as well as my own. What should I do?

A:

It is hard to be the first to make a stand. Believe it or not, your efforts will change the course of history. You will clear a path for many more great women. For now, straiten your back and keep your chin up. Accept that award and be your self. It's about time women got a shot at being on top

Parent Quote

Marie Curie makes a great role model for the younger generation. She was a pioneering scientist who made many great contributions and had to overcome acceptance of her work because of her gender. In particular, young women can look up to Marie Curie for inspiration in scientific studies. By studying her life, the younger generation can branch out into learning about radiology and medicine. As a Nobel laureate, Marie Curie is an inspiration to all on human achievement and success.

Candy Lightner: The Woman Who Saved Lives By Roisin M.

Candy Lightner’s success

Candy Lightner in court enforcing the law of drinking and driving

Before Tragedy Stuck

From 1982 to now, Candy Lightner has helped the decrease of car crashes as a founder of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). Candy Lightner has encouraged many people to b e careful on the streets and not to drink and drive. People also see her as a good role model to look up to. She tried every possible thing to spread her awareness, she wrote news paper and magazine articles, planed a couple of committees and was even on “Good Morning America” an American TV news show. Since she started MADD, the number of car crashes has gone down, this makes it safer to every pedestrian on the streets. Today, when we all look back on Candy Lightner’s actions, we can see that she has done a l ot to this community to make it safe and responsible.

Candy Lightner’s past was very tragic and a bittersweet, but beside this fact, she pulled herself together and she saved m any lives. It all started when, Candy Lightner’s son was run over by a drunk, and unlicensed driver who wasn’t even charged a ticket. Luckily he survived with a concussion. After this accident, Candy Lightner tried to tell as many people as possible about the dangers of drunk driving. A couple of years later, her thirteen-‐year-‐old daughter died because of a drunk driver. With all this anger, she decided to put all her energy towards forming MADD. She had m any committees, encouraged many mothers (anyone) to join her, and was on a couple of shows to raise awareness about drunk driving. Helping our community is very important, Candy Lightner didn’t to this because of revenge: she created MADD because she wanted to help make the world a safer place to live in.

“Candy Lightner is an inspiration and a role model for future generations who will need to continue campaigning against the dangers of drunk driving.” ~Anissa M .

Candy Lightner As A Role Model

Carrie Lightner at age 13 before her death

Candy Lightner is a role model to me because of many factors. She helped our community to make it safer to live in. And she also inspired us to do the same. The reason I chose her was because my school had an assembly where MADD came to talk to us about the fact that many teenagers and children die almost every day because of drunk drivers. I realized that this could happen to anyone including you and me. Losing a mother, father, sibling or even a close friend would be horrible, tragic and devastating! Even though people may not know about MADD, it is an important cause that changed drivers’ attitude.

Candy Lightner’s Life Time Line The Logo for MADD

This timeline starts when Candy was born and grew up in California. Years later she got married and then her son was knocked by a car. After that, her 13-‐year-‐old daughter died because of a drunk driver. Candy then decided to form MADD and broadcasted on “Good Morning America”. Dear Ms. Roisin M., “After my daughter’s death, I have been waiting to tell my community about drunk driving and how it can lead to deaths. I have tried everything in my power to do so, but it only led to failure. I need to find away to get my message across. I tried going to schools but they don’t seem to be interested. “ Can you help me? Candy Lightner

He was one of the fighters against apartheid. He was always against it even while he was in prison for 27 years. To me, I find it hard to believe just cause Mandela was one of the leaders of the revolution against apartheid he was sentenced to jail for life just cause of fighting for what he thought was right. After he was Nelson Mandela and F.W.De Klerk released from prison, he went on to be the first black president winning the noble peace prize of South Africa and was elected under universal suffrage and not restricted by colour. Many people thought he was a great leader because he did great things for the country of South Africa. An issue that concerns my individual that I chose Dear Nelson.M I think that some white people might have a problem because they do not like the change of being the only ones who had rights, including being able to live every where that they wanted. They might try to rise up against Mandela and the government by trying to kill you and make it the way it used to be, apartheid (segregation). This could be an issue because first of all you would be dead if they succeeded. It would also be very complicated because South Africa would not have an over all leader in the case of an emergency. Saving people one pill at a time: Alexander Fleming The Scientist that helped us all

Alexander Fleming working in his laboratory

Many people every year get diseases such as cellulitis and an amazing antibiotic called penicillin can treat them. Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin which is a antibiotic we use to this day that helps get rid of bacteria causing infections. This antibiotic has saved the lives of many people because it prevents diseases such as cellulitis, pneumonia and tonsillitis. It’s also used to help prevent infections in people who have weak immune systems due to already having a disease. So all in all he helped make these diseases less painful and made diseases curable that without this antibiotic may have caused people to die. His discovery is also very useful to the doctors and medical science of today. He also helped in the war with soldiers that had injuries and helped heal them. Overall medicine will never be the same after his discovery.

A flashback through the life of a genius It is always interesting to learn about people’s lives and how they grew up. Mr. Fleming was born on August 6, 1881 and grew up on a farm in rural Lochfield in east Ayrshire Scotland. He went to St. Mary's Medical School, at London University, where he won the gold medal. Fleming served in World War I as a captain in the army’s medical corps. After the war, he returned to St Mary’s where he then became the professor of the school in 1928 and professor of bacteriology in 1948. Alexander discovered penicillin accidentally in 1928 when he left out a petri dish over his vacation and saw a bacteria-killing mold on it (penicillin). The amazing scientist has many degrees, wrote about bacteriology, immunology, chemotherapy and won many awards including a Nobel peace prize and he was knighted. Sadly this man died of a heart attack in 1953.

“I absolutely think Fleming made a significant contribution to the medical community and with a lot of skill (and a little luck) saved many lives.” – Cathy T.

c Sir Alexander Fleming working on his discovery.

Some people just stand out Some people just do great things in their lives. Alexander Fleming is definitely one of those people. He is such inspiration to me (being why I chose him). Alexander really shows hard work pays off and that if you set your mind to something you can achieve it. Mr. Fleming worked really hard to find this antibiotic and eventually he did, making him a great role model. I also chose him because his discovery helped save the lives of many people, he helped soldiers, and made science as well as medicine better. Science and medicine also really interest me so Alexander Fleming’s discovery and research interested me. These are all reasons why I chose this wonderful individual. Every one should respect the time and effort people put into doing nice things for others.

Timelines are great ways to demonstrate the contributions of someone. In 1928 Alexander Fleming started off his research investigating the properties of staphylococci bacteria in his very untidy laboratory. September 3, 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin after his vacation. He then named his substance penicillin in 1929. In the 1930’s Fleming’s research started make its mark meaning people started to know about it and all the research was coming together. He won a Nobel Prize in medicine for his amazing contribution to medicine and the world.

Dear Sir Alexander Fleming,

Kids and adults use penicillin for many diseases. It prevents diseases such as pneumonia, Lyme disease and many more diseases. My antibiotic helps the people who are diagnosed with these

diseases and if they don’t use it they could possibly die. A lot of kids have to deal with these diseases and the problem is penicillin does not taste very good. Children don’t want to take these pills so we really need to fix this problem so that

Penicillin is already very useful to every day life but I understand your problem; most kids do not like the taste of medicine. Being a kid I know medicine doesn’t always taste good, and some kids will refuse to take it because of this. So my solution is to put the fungus/mould stuff into a capsule so it is easier to take and then soak it into a flavour to give it taste. Banana, strawberry, orange or grape are all good flavours to try. That way the kids will like the way it tastes and will take it. Hopefully that helps. Good luck. – Sydney .D -Sydney .D
