The Rise of Alpha Females: Sheryl Sandberg By: Allison S. – FI7C

Sheryl Sandberg is a successful businesswoman and an advocate for women.

Have you ever wondered why we have so few woman leaders? Sheryl Sandberg is one woman trying to find the answer. Sheryl’s quest has led to many discoveries and accomplishments. But who is Sheryl Sandberg and how did she help this cause? Sheryl Sandberg is not only a successful business woman but also an advocate for women and she works towards gender equality. Although this task may seem like a large, maybe even impossible one, Sheryl is determined to achieve it. So far, in her mission for this accomplishment, Sheryl has not only been working, but also achieving, as she has been ranked as one of the world’s most influential people and also as one of the most powerful women. Currently, there are more people interested in encouraging women to succeed.

There are many events, experiences and accomplishments in life which help to define us. Sheryl Sandberg has done many things in her lifetime which began on August 28, 1969. After years of hard work and dedication to school, Sheryl was accepted into Harvard University where she earned a BA in Economics and an MBA in the Harvard University business school. After graduating university in 1995, she worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company but then changed jobs and became the Chief of Staff to the United States Secretary of the Treasury. Sheryl joined Google Inc. in 2001 and served as Vice President of Global Online

Sales and Operations where she was responsible for the online sales of Google's advertising and publishing products, operations of Google's consumer products and Google Book Search. After years of hard work and dedication to her job, Facebook announced that they were going to hire Sheryl away from Google to become the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Facebook. Sheryl continues to work as the COO of Facebook and in her free time she works to promote her book, “Lean In” and she continues to help encourage business equality for women. Life is an adventure, a quest; choose wisely to make it to the end.

Because there are so many inspiring people around the world, it is very difficult to choose just one. There are a variety of reasons to choose Sheryl Sandberg to be the feature in this article. Sheryl has many great traits and has done much for women, which I find very inspiring. She encourages women to take control of their careers and to not give up on their dreams. As Sheryl herself has never given up on her dream, to be a successful business woman, she shows that hard work and determination pays off. Also, instead of being happy with her own career and life, Sheryl continues to help women, something I admire. As a girl myself, I find her to be a good role model as she stands up for what she believes and helps to promote equality for girls. Everyone has their own idea of what makes an inspiring person.

Sheryl raising awareness of women’s inequality at one of her Ted talks.

2013 Released her book, Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead.

Sheryl Sandberg worked very hard to be in the position that she is in now. After being the top student in her high school class for many years, Sheryl decided that she would go to Harvard University where she studied economics and business. After graduating, Sheryl served as Chief of Staff to the United States Secretary of the Treasury, where she helped lead the Treasury's work on debt restructuring during the Asian financial crisis. Sheryl decided that it was time for a change and joined Google Inc. where she worked her way up the company and found herself as the Vice President of Global Online Sales and Operations. And then, just when she thought she had settled into this new career, she met up with Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Facebook, who later on hired her away from google. Sheryl After many years of hard work, Sheryl became the COO of Facebook where she continues to work and improve Facebook’sSandberg became the Chief Operating Officer at Facebook. financial status. Although Sheryl Sandberg has accomplished so much in her lifetime, she realizes that currently, there are very few woman leaders in the business sector. Sheryl wrote her book Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead to express and explain this problem and she continues to be an advocate for gender equality.

Dear Allison, Recently, I have been receiving hate mail about my book Lean In. The problem these people perceive is that my book speaks only to privileged women. I have used my experience at Facebook to illustrate that women can “lean in” and be successful. It was not intended to speak to every woman in every possible situation. I know that men write these types of books without criticism, so why can’t I? Dear Sheryl, There are always critics in life but you wrote this book in order to encourage ● women. You thought that it was the right thing to do to inspire women to fulfill their potential. Although you have had some negative feedback, this book will help many women who read it. You should be proud of your effort to encourage women to do their very best. I hope you will continue to write and express your thoughts on this subject.

JFK CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER

BY : ADAM. E

CIVIL RIGHTS THANKED HIM Have you ever wondered if life was the same back in the 1940’s some people think it was the same but in all truth its nothing the same as now. In fact they were so bad that: 57% of African American housing was judged to be unacceptable, African American life expectancy was 7 years less than white and African American infant mortality was twice as great as whites. That is not even half of it. Only the used to be immigrant white skinned people had the real rights. JFK the 35th president was the first president who actually was against racial segregation. In fact he was so against it he wanted to win with more “black” votes than “white” and he succeeded 70% of his votes were “black”. Just after he became President he made a call of sympathy to Martin Luther King's wife Coretta King enabling martin to be released from jail.

John F. Kennedy 35th president of the United States of America

NOT ONLY PRESIDENT JFK, as we all know had an outstanding presidency but his childhood was a little different. For instance did you know that his mother Rose Kennedy had 9 kids, four boys and five girls. Also not a lot of people know that when he was younger he had 5 last rite ceremonies (the last prayers and ministrations given to many Catholics when possible shortly before death.) Shortly after his graduation he and his brother joined the army to fight in WWII while he was put as a commander in a patrol boat his brother was sent into Europe as a pilot. As I said before he came close to death many times and during the war he barely scraped by death another time when a Japanese destroyer destroyed his ship (ironically) instantly killing 2 men the rest including Kennedy floated to an island where some natives saved them. His brother however was not so fortunate he died a year later in a dangerous trip in Europe.

As a child of wealthy parents JFK was always incredibly dressed everywhere

JFK carefully watching the sea for any Japanese or German ships sending resources to their troops on a sunny day

I think his contributions are substantial because he was able to respond in an influential and inspiring way to major opportunities DIANE. K

JFK CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER

MY CHOICE JFK in my opinion is a great role model for many reasons. Firstly he was the youngest president the United States has ever had which in my opinion is a good role model. Second he was in WWII fighting for what he thought was right. And finally when he wasn’t fighting in the war he was in the United States fighting to free the Afro-Americans. So I personally think he will help me succeed in the long term

Saving lives through words In 2013, at the annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon which was hosted by Essence magazine, Lupita made and appearance. This luncheon is to show support for all young girls who are suffering from bullying or discrimination. Lupita was asked to give a speech. During her speech

she changed a life and saved it. She shared her stories about when she was young and going through bullying. Her inspiring words saved the life of a young girl who wanted to either commit suicide or bleach her skin so she would stop being bullied.

................ Lupita during her speech.

Dreams do come true

Lupita Nyong’o has an incredible life with endless counts of major accomplishments. One of her main accomplishments happened very recently on March 2nd 2014 at the 86th annual Oscar Awards. Miss Nyong’o was nominated for best supporting actress for her movie “12 years a slave”. She ended up going home with a golden Oscar in hand! Winning an Oscar was not the only major accomplishment, what led up to it is just as important. In 2003 Lupita

graduated from Hampshire College in Massachusetts then later, in 2012 she received her master’s degree from Yale University. When Lupita was young, she was wealthy. Her father worked in the senate and her mother focused her time by working in a foundation for cancer. But, that didn’t change the fact how she was treated poorly by others because of her skin tone. She always wanted to have lighter skin than she had so she would stop being mistreated.

................ This is Lupita at the Oscars.

“Black Beauty” : Lupita Nyong’o

I think that Lupita Nyong’o is a very good role model. She inspires many people, especially young girls, and is huge a supporter of following dreams. During her speech at the 86th annual Oscars, she said incredible words which in fact urged me to want to learn more about her and then choose her for my magazine article. Lupita Nyong’o shows how even during rough times, you have to keep moving forward and think positively, because that is what she did. She also shows how if you put yourself up to something, you can achieve it. After all, that is how she pursued her dream of being an actress.

Major Events in Lupita Nyong’o’s Life March 1st 1983: Lupita Nyong’o was born in New Mexico (she is now 31 years old)

2009- Directed, edited and produced a documentary called “In my Genes”

2003: She received a degree in film from the Hampshire College in Massachusetts.

March 2nd 2014 – Received an Oscar for “Best Supporting Role” in “12 Years a Slave “

2012- She received a Master’s degree in film from Yale University.

................ Ana’s Advice

Dearest Lupita,

Dear Ana,

I understand it may be hard to be going through bullying but you should know that your skin colour doesn’t make you any less of a person. If these people cannot understand that then then you shouldn’t be listening to them and just try to stay strong.

I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I have been bullied by others in my school because of my skin colour. I have been dreaming and wishing about waking up with lighter skin or doing something with my skin colour to make it lighter.

................ Sincerely,

Love,

Lupita Nyong’o

Quotes

“No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.” -Lupita Nyong’o

“Lupita is a good role model because her struggles make her more relatable. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent bullying but we can help teach young women to overcome it. I think Lupita serves as a great example of this.”

Ana

“I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin; I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter skinned.”

................ -Lupita Nyong’o

In Paul Walker’s short lifetime, he accomplished a lot. He starred in seven of the Fast And Furious movies. This series was very popular and successful. He acted in 32 movies over his lifetime. This shows he was very good at what he did and casting directors wanted him in their movies. Lastly, he has a charity that he created in 2010 called Reach Out World Wide. Unfortunately, he did not live on to share all of his talents.

Paul Walker did much more than just acting. All of his fighting scenes in movies inspired him to develop and interest in martial arts. He studied Jujitsu, Taekwondo, Jeet Kune Do and Eskrima.

Paul Walker pictured here working with his charity Reach Out World Wide.

“Walker had a way of living on the edge. Everyone around him loved him. What happened to him is a tragedy.” -Jeff

There are many reasons why someone would want to learn more about Paul Walker. This one of the reasons I chose him for this assignment; to learn more about him. I also thought there would be lots of information about him because he is relevant in the news right now. When he died, I had heard about his charity work in a tribute video for him. It is a shame that he died so young when he had so much talent.

He has a fifteen-year-old daughter named Meadow Rain that he had with his ex girlfriend Rebecca McBrian. Marine Biology was one of Walker’s First hobbies. He majored in Marine Biology at a California community college. Walker had many interests and always kept himself busy.

Dear Aubrey, A lot of my fans are worried about my car-racing hobby and me. They think hat I am taking too many risks in my life, but really the kind of racing I do is not dangerous at all. Racing is a part of me; I have been doing it for so long. My fans are very important to me and so is racing. What should I say to my fans? -Paul Walker

Walker Over the Years… Paul Walker worked very hard to become who he was. Walker was only thirteen years old when he stared in his first movie Monster in the Closet. Twenty-seven years later, he stared in his last movie, Fast and Furious 6 before he passed away in 2013.

Dear Paul, You are in a very difficult situation. I know you love both of those things very much so you don’t have to give up racing or let down your fans. I think you should tell your fans that the kind of racing your doing is completely safe. They are worried about it because you have not addressed it to anyone. Good luck! -Aubrey

In the early 1900’s the car wasn’t a commonly used mode of transportation but that soon changed. The world wasn’t expecting a massed produced car for a while after only merrily seeing backyard prototypes. But after two years spending every second of spare time after work refining what was called the “Quadricycle” yet another prototype was revealed to the world. This prototype was much different from any others when financial investors we’re jumping on Ford’s idea and became so popular that the financial investors developed what is still called today “The Ford Motor Company”. After some negotiation the first massed produced car rolled off the assembly line ,this assembly line employed 13 000 men in its first year and was the first assembly line in the World. But how did his brains design and hard work contribute to the world? Well, his contributions allowed the public to purchase a car as a new mode of transportation, even though the cars that Ford had designed we’re expensive they we’re most of the time in high demand, in effect employing possibly 15 000 men at one time improving the economy and family’s income across the nation. Big car company’s such as Dodge, Chevrolet and Cadillac we’re inspired by his contributions in the at that time in the future, and even though some modern cars are equipped with satellite navigation, some even park themselves and don’t quite look like a model T Ford still the company’s never think back to that would have maybe never been a thought without Henry Ford.

About the route

Henry Ford’s early life was very eventful and diverse before becoming the president of the Ford Motor Company. Henry Ford was born on July 30 1869 in a farming town called Springwells Township in Michigan on a farm with two farming parents. Leaving home at sixteen to continue with his interests in machinery wasn’t “HENRY FORD IS A GREAT ROLE something expected from Ford’s family. After leaving home, his first real MODEL TO THE YOUNGER job was working for 2.50$ an hour for the Flower Brothers Machine Shop GENERATION BY DEMONTRASTING where he there shapes brass valves on a milling machine. In 1888 ford THAT IF YOU BELIEVE IN SOMETHING marries Clara Bryant and gives birth to their only son Edsel Ford 5 years YOU CAN ALWAYS MAKE IT WORK after. After 2 years of hard work dedication and using every scrap of free WHICH MADE HIM REMARKABLE” time in a basement of the Edison Illumination company (man who LISA .M invented the light bulb company) and where he was working at the time and in the shed in his back yard Ford had completed his very own car prototype called the “Quadricycle”. No Ford did not invent the car since there had been many prototypes but his was very different to a point where financial investors we’re ready with the development of the “Ford Motor Company” within 3 years and the Ford Motor Company went from there selling their cars on a mass produced level and most of the time in high demand. As you can see Ford’s start of his crazy career was so diverse yet propelled him into something very special.

When I choose a person for a project I see how that is relevant to my past and if he or she have affected my life. Now at the age of twelve all the down to when I was three I’ve loved cars. So choosing Henry Ford for this project it would allow me to learn about the origin of the car. Also because of Ford’s and his financial investors ambition allowed the massed produced car to be a reality. I’m not saying if it weren’t for Ford that it would never be a reality but he was the first one to step up to the plate and make it possible. I’ve heard from many people that Henry Ford has done many amazing things in his life like Ford’s Peace Ship expedition which was an attempt to stop World War 1 by going overseas and try to convince the countries at war to stop yet failed. Most would look at it as a bad thing but personally I think it was

Model T Ford looking as if it is showing off its pristine black paint

good because he made the effort and he had the ideas that could have stopped the war and was confident enough to do it that’s what I like about him. As you can see Henry Ford gives me many reasons why I choose him since he is relevant to my past and has impacted my life.

April 7,1947 Henry Ford dies at the age of 83

Over the years Ford’s ideas have developed, changed and evolved. In 1869 Ford’s “Quadricycle” was essentially a bike with 3 wheels and a one cylinder motor siting on a medal box with a seat and steering wheel. Over the years his designs changed over the years yet always still using the “Quadricycle” as his foundation. His designs had accommodated for more people to fit I one or adding speed. Nowadays Ford has evolved with technology with cars that park themselves satellite navigation etc. And it is crazy to think that they have evolved into all-wheel drive 6 cylinder twin turbo supercharged machines Ken Blocks Fiesta in the picture bellow. As you can see the ideas behind the Ford Motor Company have changed drastically since the time of Henry Ford

Dear, Erik I have been having some concerns about my cars. They have been such a hit lately but I feel something is not right. Whenever I start our cars I smell the gas fumes and sometimes I feel uneasy sort of unordinary. The gas fumes almost make the air feel heavier making it unnatural to breathe. I asked some of the guys in the factory and they seem fine with it but I feel like it could be affecting the environment. Since you’re from the future the research from the scientists must be so in depth. Let me know what you’ve heard and potentially some suggestions to solve the problem if there is one. Thanks, Henry Dear, Henry ,You are absolutely right. One of the world’s biggest worry’s in 2014 is global warming and all of the pollution which is all the carbon monoxide released into the air from factory’s cars etc. In the long term this could affect our mental and physical health. A solution before you even think about designing another car is consulting Mr. Edison since you know him so well to try and make an electric car eliminating a lot of problems in 2014. The positive result is that electric cars don’t release any carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. Thanks, Erik

JOANNIE ROCHETTE SKATES FOR HERSELF AND FOR HER MOTHER March 25th, 2014

BY: Gillian

The Olympic Dream It is always a little kid’s dream to go to the Olympics. At the 2010 winter Olympic games in Vancouver, BC Joannie competed in the figure skating event just two days after her mother died of a heart attack. Even after the traumatic event she went out on the ice and performed her best ending with a bronze medal. When the Olympics were done she decided to create a campaign to raise awareness for something that she is very passionate about, heart disease in women. To raise funds for her campaign, she has become a spokesperson for Birk’s jewellery, together they have created a heart pendant. Joannie Rochette is a woman with a lot of determination and willpower.

This is the heart pendant created by Joannie and Birk’s jewellery.

Determination Pays Off Joannie has had a very successful career with skating. In addition to her bronze medal in Vancouver, she has won a silver medal at the 2009 world figure skating championships, fifth place at the 2006 winter Olympic games and she has been the Canadian champion six times. At her mother’s funeral a couple days after the Olympics, Joannie put her bronze medal on her mother’s casket. After the Olympics, she was awarded the Terry fox award for her display of courage and determination. She also had honour to be the flag bearer for the closing ceremonies. That is a pretty long list of accomplishments for a girl her age.

My Role Model Most people would not have the courage to compete in any sport anywhere just days after someone important to them dies days before. Not Joannie, she managed to have a perfect performance at the Olympics just three days after her mom died. Joannie has the passion to speak and raise awareness for something that she is passionate about and has changed her life. She is an inspiration to kids and adults, teaching them to never give up. She knows from experience that you can always reach your goals.

Advice Column Dear Gillian, My campaign has been doing very well but I am concerned that only skaters are hearing about it. How do you suggest I advertise it to let the whole world know about it? - Joannie Rochette Dear Joannie, You are a big inspiration to lots of kids, you could call schools and ask to talk at assemblies to help raise awareness. Also think of who is going to be most interested in your campaign and find a way to talk to them. I think you are doing an amazing thing, I hope you succeed in advertising your campaign. -Gillian

Winston Churchill The Voice of Britain By Jack B

March 24th, 2014

Sir Winston Churchill had many accomplishments throughout his life. He won the Nobel Prize for literature. This is because during the Second World War, he wrote great speeches such as “we will never surrender” to inspire the British people to keep on fighting as at the time, Britain was struggling in the early days of the war.. Churchill served as the British prime minister from 1940 to 45 and was elected again from 1951-55. In 1940, Churchill received the TIME Man of the Year award for his work in the government and impact on the war. In 1949, he received the TIME Man of the Half Century award for the same reasons.

Dear Jack, Lots of people in Britain do not support me at this time and I am worried that I will not get elected. How can I get people to vote for me? Sincerly, Winston Churchill

1951-55 Dear Winston, Young Churchill

About me I went to the Churchill War Rooms in London in 2012 and I found them to be very interesting. I love movies and books like The Hunger Games and Divergent. I aspire to be a film producer when I'm older.

I think that if you show people how good a leader you are and tell them about your experience, people will look to you for help in the time of war. That is how you will get elected prime minister. Sincerly, Jack

THE GREAT INVENTION OF

NATHANIEL BALDWIN Jonathan. D

HIS IMPORTANCE

Nathaniel Baldwin, the man that changed the way sound is listened to, created and how it’s set. How did this man change something so important in the human society? Well Nathaniel was the first person to invent a pair of headphones he called them the Baldy phones (because his last name). Time passed and his new invention started getting popular, in fact it was so popular it created enough money for him to make his own company, the company was called Baldwin Radio Company. This man has accomplished things that have inspired many other people today, such as DR. DRE and the new apple earphones also companies such as the Source and Monster. From his creation and his contributions the headphones have evolved into ones varying in different shapes and sizes, colors and designs.

WHY HE STOOD OUT

UT

I chose Nathaniel Baldwin because I

have many things in common. We both share the same interest in certain things such as inventing, creating or building things. I also chose him because without his great invention I wouldn’t be able to listen to music as comfortably as I normally would or in public areas. Neither would any other person, maybe we would have invented headphones without the help of Nathaniel but it wouldn’t be as developed as it is today. Since he’s affected something that I love and is in my everyday life (music), it made it easier for me to connect and write about him. He is also very creative and persistent, from going to making something in your kitchen to creating a whole company that was worth millions is something that amazes me. Nathaniel Baldwin and his invention started a great evolution process that changed the world of sound.

HISTORY

Music, something that

many people cherish and love all changed by one man. Nathaniel Baldwin, the inventor of the first headphones. Nathaniel was a smart man who got his degree in Electrical Engineering. After getting his degree, he began teaching Physics Theology at BYA (Brigham Young Academy). He always loved working with electronics and mechanics, even as a kid. When he was younger he made his own bicycle and steam engine by scratch. He was so talented and creative that his very first prototype was created in his own kitchen!

This is what Nathaniel’s headphones looked like.

Said in the article, I love music I like any kind really but I normally listen to classic rock and rock. I’m creative and always up for trying something new. For my pass time I like to draw and explore the different worlds of music. The things that I do not like are… reading and roller coasters.

Here is a picture of Nathaniel Baldwin

GUARDIAN QUOTE “The fact the he has chosen someone that’s important is something good. I like that his choice isn’t some random guy that didn’t do an important thing in life but is well known and important.”

Hello there Mr. Baldwin, my name is Jonathan and I would like to ask some questions. I to would like to create something that will change the world, something that will do good. Since you have experience in this type of field I was hoping you could help me out. Hello there Jonathan, this is Nathaniel Baldwin. I like that question and I’m sure I’ll be able to answer it. Well I think it would be good to first look at the human society and find something’s that would be helpful in the future. Always try to do something original and smart. Many people can’t ever get off their phone, so maybe you could do something related to that. You should also think about something in the field of medicine or science, many scientist are in need of assistance. There’s never enough medicine in the world and were slowly finding new ones so maybe you could create or invent a new cure for something that’s big at the moment, such as cancer. Hopefully my response was helpful to you.

David Williams talks about the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s evolution.

It’s wonderful when someone wants to help others that are less fortunate than themselves, but it’s even more wonderful when that person manages to succeed. After joining the non-profit sector, David Williams was able to take on more and more responsibility when he was at Habitat for Humanity. He was able to rise to the position of C.O.O. and executive vice president. Mr. Williams has helped the Make-A-Wish Foundation become financially stronger and better organized since he has been there, which has helped him with his goal of granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. This incredible man has accomplished many great things.

Once a philanthropist, always a philanthropist Philanthropists are great people who use their own knowledge to help others, and David Williams does exactly that. Before he became the president and C.E.O. of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he spent eleven years at Habitat for Humanity where he became the executive vice president and C.O.O. Mr. Williams has also worked at the Houston Food Bank, and he was the executive director there for eleven years. George W. Bush, the U.S. president, appointed him to the Helping to Enhance the Livelihood of People (HELP) Around the Globe Commission. David Williams has had a goal of helping people for almost his whole career, and he has had a lot of success. ●●●

Always looking for a chance to make a difference David Williams has made many positive impacts upon the world. I have chosen him for this article because I admire how he decided to use his strong business skills for philanthropic purposes. Another reason that I have chosen Mr. Williams is that I love kids, and when I see them suffering, I want to The logo for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. help. Mr. Williams contributes to giving kids hope by running the Make-A-Wish Foundation. When he says that giving kids a chance to make a “wish” isn’t just about the numbers but each individual’s story, I very much agree. This is a very great thing to say.

Dear Kali, I am very happy to see how far I have been able to get the Make-AWish Foundation since I have been here, but there’s one issue. We are unable to grant the wishes of every deserving child because of limited time and resources. I would love to fix this problem and give as many ill kids as possible the chance to make a “wish”, but I can’t come up with a solution on my own. Can you help? Thanks for your time, David Williams

Dear David, I think it’s great that you have spent the time to find possible issues in your business, because not every businessman or woman would even think to do that. The separation between black and whites has been going on for several years and yet in the 21st century, this is still going on. There are many places in the world where people still do not think that sharing things with coloured people should be allowed, for example the Ku Klux Klan (K.K.K.) does not agree with sharing things with coloured people. They think that there should be apartheid. In 1954 Thurgood Marshall ended the legal segregation in the United States. He made a huge contribution to coloured people because he helped them have the same chances and freedom rights as white people. Marshall also stopped the colour line in housing, voting, and transportation. Stopping the colour line means that coloured people are now allowed to do things that they were unable to do This is a picture of Thurgood before, for example, now coloured people are allowed to vote. Marshall in his judge gown. He also built a structure of individual rights for women, children and people that did not have the same rights as men and white people.

Before Thurgood Marshall became famous for helping coloured people, he was a lawyer. In 1934, he just graduated from law school where he was learning how to be a great lawyer. After graduating from law school, he started at a private law practice in Baltimore. He began his 25 year alliance with the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) by representing the organization in the law school discrimination suit. At the age of 32, he founded and became the executive director for the NAACP Legal Defence and Education Fund. In 1967, he was voted to the U.S. Supreme Court. Marshall was the first AfricanAmerican. Thurgood served the Court for the next 24 years.

I chose this individual because he has given major contributions to this world. Thurgood Marshall changed the future for coloured people. He changed it by: becoming the first African-American supreme court justice, ending the legal segregation, by stopping the colour line in housing, voting and transportation, by building a structure of individual rights for women, children and other people who whites did not like because of their colour, and also by overruling the separate but equal apartheid. Marshall shows a good impact to the world, but he also shows that the world is not perfect. To this day, there are still people who do This is Marshall (right) is checking not like what he has done. We all have our opinions, even if they’re not good. Thurgood Marshall is also a role model, not documents in a court hearing only to young children or teens, but also to elderly people. People of all ages can look up to him and idolize him; he is an inspiration to all.

But his childhood was difficult and I thought it was inspiring. When I got to learn a lot about him I understood how much we are similar. He has been a great influents not only on me but others to. Beyoncé and her ways of changing the world By Mutoni

Accomplishments Beyoncé is known for her unique accomplishments. She uses her awardwinning talents to help people. For example, she performed in the benefit concert Hope for Haiti and she donated Beyoncé Knowles and her baby money from her concerts to a group daughter, Blue Carter advocating women’s rights. When Beyoncé and Jay-z had their baby girl Blue, they donated all the baby gifts to charity, mostly young mothers. One of Beyoncé’s biggest accomplishments was when she partnered with Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!”campaign to end child obesity. Even though Beyoncé has accomplished many things in her life, she is always striving to achieve more.

Intriguing people with her interesting facts

The destiny’s Child girls Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams and LaTivia Robertson.

Beyoncé is definitely NOT a typical celebrity. She has moved beyond being as a lead singer in her group, Destiny’s Child, to being a soloist. Moreover, when she was about 15 or 16 years of age, Christina Aguilera hired her to be a backup singer on her tour. After Whitney Houston (the person who discovered her) passed away, she donated money to prevent drug addiction. For a couple of years Beyoncé suffered from depression but did not share it with the media because it was around the time Destiny’s Child won their Grammy. There are many fascinating facts about Beyoncé that would blow your minds and make you want to learn more.

The Woman Behind the Picture Your self-worth is determined by you. You don’t have to depend on someone telling you who you are. -Beyoncé

Beyoncé is much more than a world famous philanthropist. As a leader she stands for more than her work of helping 23 charities and her 20 causes such as MusiCares and Hurricane Katrina survivors. Beyoncé is a personality who is not just liked but loved by millions of people in the world. In fact, she is called the Queen Bee. Her gift is that she also inspires people to be confident and follow her example of contributing to the world. The career of Beyoncé took time to develop. It took over 25 years till she was considered one of the most popular and most powerful women in the music industry. From the time she was 8 she competed in singing competitions all over the world till she finally made her big break in 1996 at age 16. Approximately 10 years later started her solo career. It took years for Beyoncé to shine as a star but now she can enjoy the outcome of her hard work.

-Beyoncé Dear Beyoncé, I very much understand your problem. But do not fear, - Beyoncé for I have a solution. To be honest, many people in this world are just too lazy to do research on their own, so look to the media for help. Using your fame you could use the media to showcase your philanthropic works. Dear Peter, I have gotten myself involved in a $430 Million lawsuit for the patent and use of WiFi by US companies. I am very worried about what might happen if we lose, because then my government will lose very much money. I would like your help.

John O’Sullivan

Dear John, if I were you, I wouldn’t be worrying that much, because it is the US that is in a sense “buying your permission” to use WiFi by US companies. There is virtually no way you can lose that money, and in my opinion, the only possible outcome is that the Aussie government will gain $430 million dollars.

Hope that helped, Peter

And that as a teenager she lived in a Grade II listed cottage in Gloucestershire, which she states was "not a particularly happy time in my life", due to her mother being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and a strained relationship with her father.

I feel that J.K. Rowling’s impact on the world has been wonderful. When I was little, the first real book series I read was hers. I’ve grown up with the characters; I’ve gone to school at Hogwarts. Her books took me to another place when was sad, mad, angry or frustrated. Because when you can’t deal with the real world you can always come to Hogwarts.

J.K. Rowling had to get on a train and then had the idea of Harry Potter popped into her head, she didn’t even have a pen to write with.

1990

J.K. Rowling moved to Portugal.

1991

Her first book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone was published”

The first movie came out! A movie edition of her first book came out and was instantly a hit.

1997

The last movie came out. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2.

Dear Phoebe, Many readers have suggested that I was promoting black magic in my books and think that I am leaving the impression that it’s good and that I should retract them from the public, what should I say and/or how should I stop this?? -J.K. Rowling Dear Joanne, In my opinion you were not promoting witchcraft. You’re stories are about friendship, love, sacrifices AND magic. The spells they use are purely for good. Tell them that you weren’t teaching children about how to preform exorcisms on the floor, and it’s their fault if their kids are doing this. . -Phoebe

Edward Jenner: The Father of Immunology By: Seònaid

Edward Jenner, a wellknown scientist.

Smallpox was a deadly disease, killing many. Edward Jenner then found the cure from discovering that milkmaids and farmers that had had the cowpox disease never received the smallpox disease. Then one day he collected some of the cowpox disease and injected it into a young boy for an experiment and the boy never received smallpox. That started the trend of vaccinations and created the science of immunology, which is still being developed and that is the reason that Edward Jenner is known as “the Father of immunology.” Another reason Jenner was admired was because he published all of his work for the world to see and read about as well as allowing later scientists to develop from his discoveries and continue vaccinations. Jenner saved many lives and is keeping the present generation healthy which I am very thankful for.

Edward Jenner was a lucky child born into a lucky family. Jenner received a basic education because his father was the vicar of Berkeley, Gloucestershire where Jenner lived. He was the eighth of nine children that all received a basic education. After certain doctors apprenticed him in Berkeley he became a family doctor and surgeon. While being a doctor, he formed the Fleece Medical Society with some friends to share their papers and dine at the Fleece Inn, in Rodborough, Gloucestershire. A similar group in Alveston, near Bristol, gathered together and he joined them as well to share his papers. Those groups are what made him start to study the cowpox and smallpox diseases.

Edward Jenner performing a vaccination.

The reason that I chose Edward Jenner is because his discovery of the smallpox vaccine was clever and it saved many lives. Also along with his discovery of the vaccine, came the science of immunology. The science of immunology is what keeps my generation safe and healthy from all of the deadly diseases that occurred earlier in time. He also started the development of immunology which is continuing to progress. One of the main reasons I chose Edward Jenner was because even after The Royal Society rejected him and the churches ridiculed him, because of his theory of injecting one disease to prevent another, he still kept trying to spread the word and he kept vaccinating people and promoting his work secretly. All in all Edward Jenner is just really inspiring and in my mind a hero.

1796: Edward Jenner has his first experiment to try and cure smallpox with cowpox on a young boy.

1798: Jenner publishes his notes from the experiments privately after the Royal Society refuses and then continues to promote immunology. 1805: Napoleon insisted that the army gets vaccinated.

1823: Has a stroke determined to be fatal after a non-fatal stroke and dies in his bed.

Dear Seònaid, I’m writing to you because ever since I showed my notes from my discovery to the Royal Society and they rejected me I have been ridiculed. Especially by the clergy and they made a cartoon about people who are vaccinated growing cow heads. How can I persuade the Royal Society and the clergy to accept my discovery?

The smallpox vaccination and application device.

Sincerely, Edward Jenner Dear Edward, Something you could do to persuade the Royal Society is to keep promoting vaccinations and publish all your work to warn and to inform them about your discovery. Always remember as well to never give up because your discovery may save many lives. Sincerely,

“He demonstrated bravery and determination in his unceasing promotion of the vaccine, despite medical, religious and commercial ridicule, opposition and attempts to discredit his work.” -Jane

THE GOLDEN SWIMMER: MISSY FRANKLIN

By: Taylor

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to live in a treatment center? Do you know anyone who is in one? Missy Franklin volunteers in one almost every day. Franklin helps out in a mental facility for children with disabilities for most of her high school experience. Missy has also done some work with Michael Phelps charity, which helps less fortunate kids learn to swim. As many people have noticed she’s American, but she’s Canadian as well! What?

The girl behind the gold The marshal blows the whistle, as the crowd starts to cheer. They jump in and wait for the buzzer. “Swimmers, take your mark…” BOOP! They’re off! And you wake up. What a dream! But for Missy Franklin this is a reality.

“I think that Missy is a great role model for my daughter.” -Laura Missy with her 2012 Olympic medals At the age of 13, Franklin was asked by her coaches to go to the Olympic trials for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Sadly she didn’t make it. However, in 2011 and 2012, she won the FINA swimmer of the year award.

Missy and her gold medal winning relay team

Before she tried out for the 2012 Olympic Games, she was asked if she wanted to swim for the U.S team or the Canadian team. Since she was born in the U.S she decided to swim for the U.S. In those Olympic Games she became the first woman in U.S history to be entered in 7 events and she won 3 gold medals and 1 bronze.

A very influential swimmer! The main reason why I chose Missy Franklin is because she is one of my role models. Missy works with kids a lot and is clearly happy doing so, and that is completely amazing. Even though I’m disappointed she chose the U.S team over the Canadian team, she’s still very influential. I love the fact that she was only 13 when she tried out for the Beijing Olympics, I wish I could say that about myself. Did you know that she didn’t want to go pro originally? When she didn’t make the 2008 Olympics she gave up. But not for long, because we saw her compete in the 2012 London Games.

Missy’s Timeline 1995:

2012:

2008:

May 10th 1995, in Pasadena California a swimmer was born

At the age of 17 Missy became the first female in U.S history to be entered in 7 events in one Olympiad.

At the age of 13, Missy went to the Olympic trials for the Beijing Olympic Games. 2000: 2011:

At the age of 5 Missy’s mother forced her to learn to swim because she was afraid of water and didn’t want her daughter to develop the same fear.

At the age of 16 Missy won the FINA Swimmer of the Year award.

T Time! Dear Taylor,

Dear Missy,

Recently I have been asked by my coaches to get more involved with environmental projects. But if I were to do an environmental project I wouldn’t have time to help the kids. I don’t know what to tell him. Please help!

I think that your coaches are right, because there aren’t enough people helping out with the environment. But you are also right, and you love helping those kids. So maybe you can find a compromise which would let you help kids in need and help with the environment as well. Try starting with Free the Children; they would have a great program for you.

Liu Xiaobo: A Hero Behind Bars A Lifetime of Activism

Liu Xiaobo is a Chinese activist who has participated in many human rights movements to make China a better place. He was a primary writer of Charter 08, an online petition for increased rule of law, greater enforcement of human rights and an end to one-party rule in China. Today this petition has been signed by over 10,000 Chinese people around the globe. In addition to that, he is a well-known writer, scholar and literary critic. Xiaobo was president of the Independent Chinese PEN Center from 2003-2007 and today till serves as an honorary president. On December 10th, 2010 Liu received the Nobel Peace Prize for his “long a non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China”, but unfortunately he was under house arrest at the time and was unable to collect his award. Many times, Xiaobo has been imprisoned or put under house arrest for his writing and movements of activism although they have never involved violence. At the moment, Liu is imprisoned for speaking against the Chinese government and his co-signing of Charter 08.

Xiaobo was born in 1955 in Changchun, China and spent his teenage

years in Mongolia. In his early 20s and late teens, Liu worked as a manual labourer and later moved to attend classes at Jillin University; it was there that he met his wife, Liu Xia, a poet and artist. Additionally, he had a son named Liu Tao from his previous marriage. Before he became a famous activist, Liu Xiaobo worked as a professor at Beijing Normal University and visiting scholar at Columbia University. He left his post at Columbia to participate in the 1989 Democracy Movement in Beijing, which took place at Tiananmen Square. Liu actually wrote a book of poems “June Fourth Elegies” focusing on that event at which he saved many lives and became famous as an activist.

I chose Liu Xiaobo because I think that he is a perfect example of someone who fights for what he believes in, no matter what the circumstance. Despite all the hardships that he has been and is going through, he still continues to advocate for human rights and political reform. Liu Xiaobo is a great role model because he has always gotten what he wants peacefully and silently, without using violence. Even though not everyone agrees with Liu’s viewpoint, he still continues to always do the right thing. In my opinion, Liu is a very courageous person who puts his country ahead of himself.
