YEARWITHNEARLY70AIRMENALREADYSET TOTRAVELHOMEFORTHEHOLIDAYS

For hundreds of Minot Air Force Base airmen, there’s no better gift than time spent with loved ones, and thanks to the Minot community, that gift is once again within reach As the holiday season approaches, the Minot Area Chamber EDC

(MACEDC) is proud to announce that nearly 70 airline tickets have already been booked to help Minot Air Force Base (MAFB) airmen travel home beginning in November and continuing through December - a strong start to the MACEDC program’s third year

Formerly known as Home for the Holidays, the MACEDC initiative has a new name: Operation Homebound While the title has evolved, the mission remains unchanged: to ensure as many first-term airmen as possible can spend the holidays with the families and friends who matter most What began in 2023 with a simple question following a Military Affairs Committee meeting - “How can the community do more?” - has grown into one of Minot’s most heartfelt annual traditions After learning that four airmen were able to travel through the original MAFB run program known as Operation Bright Holiday, the MACEDC board of directors rallied to create a broader, community-driven solution. With an initial $15,000 allocation from the Prairie Warrior Auction, MACEDC launched a program built on community partnership and a promise that every donated dollar would go directly toward purchasing airline tickets to send airmen home.

The rebrand to Operation Homebound reflects both the program’s growth and its purpose. “It’s a wonderful gesture. This beautiful Minot tradition is a perfect reminder of how lucky we are to be serving our nation in such a special place,” said Col. Jimmy Schlabach, 91st Missile Wing Commander.

“Many thanks to our community volunteers, military spouses and First Sergeants for making this holiday magic happen,” added Col Jesse Lamarand, 5th Bomb Wing Commander

For MACEDC, the name change reinforces a long-term vision “Operation Homebound directly aligns with our military support pillar of advocating and supporting airmen and families,” said Brekka Kramer, MACEDC President | CEO “Minot isn’t Minot without Minot Air Force Base Our military members carry out our nation’s most important mission, and we’ll always look for ways to serve those who serve us We are proud of the strong community support for this program.”

Fundraising for 2025 continues. On December 4, two Minot Qdoba locations and Minot Jersey Mike’s will donate 100% of their sales to Operation Homebound, meaning every meal purchased helps send another airman home Direct donations may also be made through the MACEDC office or via Venmo at @MinotAreaChamberEDC. For more information on how you or your business can support Operation Homebound, please contact the Minot Area Chamber EDC at 701-852-6000 or email keli@minotchamberedc.com

WOMENCONNECTHOST WITHHOLLY

The Minot Area Chamber EDC’s Women Connect Signature Event welcomed fall with a powerful afternoon of inspiration, connection, and communitybuilding Held earlier this month, the event featured Holly Hoffman, a nationally recognized professional speaker, author, and finalist on Survivor: Nicaragua, whose message of perseverance, purpose, and personal strength captivated the audience from start to finish.

Holly’s keynote, took attendees on a journey through her time on Survivor, but the true impact came from the lessons she’s carried into everyday life. Through moments of laughter and even a few tears, Holly shared stories of overcoming self-doubt, rediscovering faith, and leaning into resilience. Her candor and humor struck a chord with the audience, offering practical takeaways that attendees could apply to their own personal and professional challenges Her message centered on self-reflection, positive mental attitude, and embracing the support of others which was a perfect fit for Women Connect’s mission to empower, educate, and uplift individuals across the Minot area

HOFFMAN INSPIRINGAFTERNOON

MACEDC and the Women Connect committee are also grateful to all the attendees who brought such energy and warmth to the event. Your participation and desire to get involved and support community events helps make the Minot area truly special.

Didn’t make it this time? Don’t worry, Women Connect will return on January 27 with more exciting programming. Stay tuned for details, and mark your calendars now!

A packed room of professionals, community leaders, entrepreneurs, and students filled the venue, each taking something uniquely valuable from Holly’s story. Many attendees stuck around afterward to share personal takeaways, network with fellow guests, and grab signed copies of Holly’s book, Your Winner Within

We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Chevron, the event’s presenting sponsor, for making this memorable afternoon possible Their commitment to leadership development and community engagement is instrumental in shaping opportunities like this

The annual Prairie Warrior Bowl Military Appreciation Day hosted by Minot State University took place on Saturday, October 11 between the MSU Beavers and the University of Jamestown Jimmies. Several military members were in attendance on this beautiful fall afternoon. The MSU Beavers took home the win with a 35-28 score. This annual event tied together collegiate athletics, military appreciation, and regional rivalry, enhancing the game-day experience beyond just the sport.

AGRIBUSINESSCOMMITTEEGIVESBACKTO LOCALSTUDENTS

The August 5 Dinner on the Prairie provided those attending the event with insight into how much local farmers contribute to feeding the world The event is an opportunity for the Agribusiness Committee to showcase local farmers and ranchers to those who didn’t grow up on a farm. A crowd of 240 people had a delicious meal of locally sourced food and learned more about where our food comes from, thanks to the support of our presenting sponsor First International Bank and Trust.

This event wouldn’t be possible without the many volunteers who raised money, planned, prepared and set up the event. Local students also helped make it happen. Three FFA chapters provided a helping hand; Max, South Prairie and Velva and the Agribusiness Committee presented them with a donation as a thank you

NORTHAMERICANIRONPROJECTSETS MINOTATTHECOREOFU.S.STEEL INDEPENDENCE

North American Iron (NAI) is advancing a first-of-its-kind industrial project in Minot, North Dakota, set to reshape the future of American steel. With a site identified in partnership with the Minot Area Chamber EDC and local stakeholders, the project will establish the first long-term source of merchant pig iron in the United States. Using legacy iron ore feedstock arriving from Minnesota by rail, the Minot facility will produce two million metric tons of high-purity pig iron each year, supplying U.S. steelmakers with a consistent and clean feedstock that’s currently sourced entirely from foreign producers

The NAI project is not just about steel It is about long-term domestic resilience on all levels: supply chain, national security and job market, keeping opportunity rooted here in Minot Pig iron is the purest form of iron feedstock essential for electric arc furnace steelmaking, which now accounts for more than seventy-five percent of steel production in the country Pig Iron is a premium iron product, delivering predictable chemistry that improves efficiency, reduces impurities, and enables the production of high-performance steel used in bridges, pipelines, vehicles, military equipment, and other critical infrastructure Yet, U S supply of merchant pig iron comes entirely from imports and over the past few years over sixty percent of the imports were disrupted by the Russia–Ukraine conflict, posing a risk to key U.S. sectors that depend on high-quality steel.

Recognizing the need for a reliable and sustainable domestic source, NAI sought a location that could support advanced production. Minot emerged as the clear choice with abundant energy, strong infrastructure, and North Dakota’s potential for carbon sequestration, enabling low-carbon U.S. steel independence.

Additionally, with stranded natural gas available in Minot and direct rail connections to Minnesota’s ore deposits 500 miles, the region is well positioned for efficient pig iron production. North American Iron’s sister company, Calumet Reclamation, will reclaim iron ore from historic stockpiles at the Hill Annex Mine site in Minnesota The mine operated from 1913 to 1978, leaving behind millions of tons of legacy ore for future processing

Calumet will use low-impact, gravity-based methods to reclaim the ore from surface piles, which will then be transported site to site by rail from Calumet, MN to Minot, ND In Minot, NAI will process the ore using hydrogen-based Tenova HYL technology This clean production method is expected to reduce emissions by up to 96% compared to traditional blast furnaces and includes built-in carbon capture

“We looked at every option, and Minot stood out immediately. The cost structure is competitive, the energy resources are unmatched, and the partnerships that came together here made the decision clear. This is not just about building a plant it is about securing America’s steel supply for decades. Every ton of pig iron we produce strengthens U.S. manufacturing and national security. That is why we are here,” Jim Bougalis, Founder and CEO, North American Iron.

Ryan Ackerman, Chair of the Minot Area Chamber EDC Board, says the project is a strong fit for the region.

“This project represents exactly the kind of transformational investment we work toward at the Minot Area Chamber EDC,” said Ackerman “North American Iron recognized what we’ve always known: Minot’s strategic location, energy capacity, and collaborative spirit make it the perfect place to power long-term industrial growth This project positions our region at the core of America’s manufacturing and energy independence ”

The project is expected to create over 650 jobs in North Dakota and 150 jobs in Minnesota. It will generate over a $1B in revenue for North Dakota and contribute $150M to Minnesota’s Permanent School Trust Fund. It is supported by North Dakota’s Clean Sustainable Energy Authority and aligns with federal priorities for clean industry, strategic materials, and domestic supply chain development

Steel is the foundation of American industry It is used in everything from skyscrapers and highways to railcars and submarines The United States produces more than ninety-five million tons of steel annually, and most of that production relies on electric arc furnaces that require pig iron to balance scrap variability and ensure consistent chemistry North American Iron’s facility will help U S steelmakers produce cleaner, stronger steel for the infrastructure and industries that keep the country moving

This is a generational project. It is advancing quickly and positioning Minot as a strategic hub for clean industrial growth. With strong partnerships, proven leadership, and a fully domestic production model, North American Iron is building more than a facility. It is building a sustainable future for American steel.

The Minot Area Chamber EDC (MACEDC) is proud to cheer on Clara Zheng as she heads to Washington, D C to compete in the National Civics Bee Finals this month! Clara earned her spot after advancing through both the local and state competitions, showcasing her deep understanding of government, leadership, and civic responsibility.

Clara first impressed judges in Minot, North Dakota’s first ever regional competition, hosted earlier this year by MACEDC in partnership with the U.S. Chamber Foundation. She then went on to compete at the state level, where she emerged as North Dakota’s top student We got the chance to ask Clara about her upcoming experience:

How did it feel to not only win the regional competition, but the state?

I felt proud and grateful, not just for myself, but for everyone who supported me along the way I’m especially thankful to my family, friends, teachers, Minot Area Chamber EDC, and the Greater North Dakota Chamber, who helped me so much. Winning at the state level showed me that my idea can make a real difference and inspired me to keep working toward positive change in my community.

How are you preparing for the National event?

I’m preparing for the National event in November by refining my 3-minute speech, practicing answers to possible judge questions, and reviewing the study guide to make sure I’m fully ready I’m focusing on confidence, clarity, and overall knowledge

Do you think the average citizen knows much about civics?

I think everyone has a certain level of civics knowledge. I’m glad that we're learning about U.S. history and government in school It helps us understand how our country works and why it’s important to be active, informed citizens Learning civics gives us the tools to make real changes in our communities, and I think more people would be involved that way

What are you looking forward to in D.C.?

I’m really looking forward to visiting Washington, D.C. and seeing all the historic places we’ve learned about in class like the Capitol, the monuments, and the museums. I’m also excited to meet other students from across the country who care about making a difference. It’s such a cool opportunity to share ideas, learn from others, and represent North Dakota on a national level.

Is there anything you want to share?

I just want to say how grateful I am for this opportunity and for everyone who’s supported me Working on this project has taught me so much about perseverance, responsibility, and the importance of strengthening civic knowledge I hope my proposal inspires more conversations about mental health and how schools can support students. No matter what happens, I’m proud to represent North Dakota and share something I believe in.

The National Civics Bee encourages middle school students to engage in civics, understand the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and think critically about the role they can play in our democracy. Clara will join top competitors from across the nation in D C to demonstrate her knowledge on November 11 We encourage everyone to watch the live stream and show Clara North Dakota’s support by clicking here!

NDSHORTTERM,LOW-INTERESTLOANS

North Dakota residents affected by the recent federal government shutdown now have access to financial assistance through the Furloughed Federal Employee Relief Program (FFERP), a partnership between Bank of North Dakota (BND) and local financial institutions. The program was announced by North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong, along with North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley, and Rick Clayburgh, president of the North Dakota Bankers Association at a press conference on October 8.

This program is available to federal government employees, members of the armed services stationed in North Dakota, and federal contractors paid directly by the government who are currently not receiving a paycheck due to the shutdown on October 1, 2025 Eligible applicants can receive short-term, low-interest loans equal to up to three months of their base net pay, unless pay is reinstated sooner

To qualify, borrowers must meet a number of criteria:

Be North Dakota residents or members of the armed forces stationed in the state

Be directly impacted by the shutdown and not currently receiving pay

Be current customers of the participating financial institution (the "lead lender") with their federal paycheck directly deposited there.

Not apply for any other government shutdown loan programs.

Loans are unsecured and structured as a non-revolving line of credit, with the ability to draw funds in multiple advances that follow the borrower’s usual pay schedule. Borrowers will begin repayment three months after their first disbursement, with three equal monthly payments due after that. The loan carries a fixed interest rate of 2% and includes no prepayment penalty or default interest rate.

At the Minot Area Chamber EDC, we recognize the vital role our federal workforce plays in the strength and success of our region From the dedicated service members in the Minot area to the civilian professionals supporting essential operations, these individuals are critical to both our national defense and our local economy Supporting efforts like the Furloughed Federal Employee Relief Program aligns closely with our organizational pillars of Advocating for Community, Advancing Business, and Championing People It’s through this lens that we remain committed to ensuring the well-being of those who serve and support our country

SRTANDFOUNDATIONFORRURALSERVICE (FRS)AWARDCOMMUNITYGRANTFUNDSTO LOCALMOTIVESINMINOT

SRT and NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association (NTCA) presented $5,000 to Local Motives at Citizens Alley in downtown Minot. The community grant – comprising $4,500 from the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) and $500 from SRT – funded three checker/chess board picnic tables and game pieces for Citizens Alley to enhance passive recreation, foster community engagement, and enrich the public plaza experience

Citizens Alley opened this summer as a community hub and year-round gathering space offering a variety of summer and winter activities The public plaza is operated by Local Motives, a local non-profit dedicated to enhancing the vitality and vibrancy of downtown Minot through creative placemaking, public art, and community-driven events Since July 10, Citizens Alley has hosted more than 30 event days, including the Silobration attended by roughly 700 people in August

“SRT has been supportive of making this dream a reality for several years,” said Jessica Ackerman, Executive Director of Local Motives. “Minot needed a place to connect with each other and instill pride in our community. We are in the business of connections – a purpose we share with SRT. Thank you to SRT for being a part of this dream and thank you to FRS for having the vision for communities like ours.”

FRS, the philanthropic arm of NTCA, works to sustain and enhance quality of life in America through an understanding of rural issues. The Community Grant Program is offered annually through NTCA members to support local efforts in building sustainable rural communities for residents Because SRT is a member of NTCA, communities within SRT’s service area can apply for the FRS Community Grant Program

“I have seen first-hand how NTCA members like SRT partner with their communities to advance economic vitality and quality of their public spaces,” said Shirley Bloomfield, CEO of NTCA “Citizens Alley is a shining example of how these collaborations build lasting benefit for local residents and visitors alike – and what a treat it was for me to see this partnership in action while in Minot this week I’m proud of the work FRS does to help our community-based providers spread philanthropy throughout their service areas ”

ROOSEVELTPARKZOO’SGIRAFFEFAMILY GROWSWITHEXCITINGNEWARRIVAL

The Roosevelt Park Zoo is head over hooves with excitement to announce the arrival of a brand-new baby giraffe! Born at 10pm on Sunday, November 2nd, 2025, inside the zoo’s state-of- the-art Giraffe Barn, this long-legged bundle of joy weighed in at a healthy 145 pounds and is already turning heads with his wobbly charm.

Proud parents Kianga (25) and Kioni (4) are doing wonderfully, and the little calf who hasn’t been named yet is already stealing hearts and stretching his neck toward the spotlight His birth is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP), a program dedicated to ensuring the future of vulnerable species through thoughtful breeding and conservation efforts. This marks Kianga’s 11th calf to be born at the Roosevelt Park Zoo but is Kioni’s first.

“Strong animal welfare practices create the foundation for new life when animals feel safe, healthy, and cared for, they thrive, and new generations can begin in comfort and security” said Chelsea Mihalick, Zoo Curator

“This calf’s arrival is a perfect example of what happens when exceptional care and conservation come together,” said Dr. Logan Wood, Zoo Director. Giraffes are going through a silent extinction. Currently listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with populations declining due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Fewer than 117,000 remain in the wild, making every new calf a reason to celebrate and to continue vital conservation work.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome this calf to our Roosevelt Park Zoo family. Our giraffe family has always been a favorite among guests,” said Wood. “Thanks to the generous donation of an anonymous donor, visitors can watch the newest addition to our zoo grow and play all year long in the new African Plains Building!”

At birth, giraffe calves are already 6 feet tall (taller than most zookeepers!) and can grow up to three centimeters per day in their first week They’re even born with tiny “ossicones” the soft, cartilaginous nubs on their heads that later harden into the giraffe’s signature horns For now, Kianga and her calf are spending quality bonding time inside the Giraffe Building, guests will soon be able to meet the dynamic duo up close in the African Plains Building

DEPARTMENTOFNURSINGEARNS10-YEAR CCNEREACCREDITATION

The Minot State University Department of Nursing has been reaccredited for 10 years by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) following a successful self-study and on-site evaluation.

The decision reaffirms Minot State’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program’s strength in curriculum, faculty qualifications, student outcomes, and continuous improvement.

“This is a milestone for our students, our faculty, and the region we serve,” said Amy Lee, chair of the Department of Nursing. “Accreditation at the highest term reflects years of focused work: collecting evidence, strengthening curriculum, and ensuring our graduates are practice-ready. We are thrilled to have this finalized.”

The CCNE Board of Commissioners extended MSU’s accreditation to December 31, 2035, which was effective Feb. 26, 2025, the first day of MSU’s CCNE on-site evaluation. The site visit was one of many steps and procedures that Minot State’s Department of Nursing followed during the multi-phase process of measuring MSU against nationally recognized standards.

“The site visit was an intense, thorough process and we welcomed it,” Lee added “Their feedback validated our strengths and pushed us to keep elevating how we teach clinical judgment and compassionate care ”

Over the past two years, MSU nursing led a comprehensive self-study, gathering evidence from course assessments, licensure results, clinical partner feedback, and student/faculty surveys During the on-site evaluation, peer reviewers met with students, alumni, community and clinical partners, faculty, and University leadership; visited classrooms and labs; and verified the program’s assessment and improvement systems Reviewers noted the highest level of student participation they’ve seen, both in-person and online students attended the sessions, and alumni returned to campus to share perspectives and confirm program strengths.

“This accreditation belongs to our students, alumni, faculty, and clinical partners,” Lee said. “Thank you for believing in what MSU nursing can do. We’re excited for the next decade and for the nurses who will lead it.”

The Union Silos Public Art Project reached a major milestone this fall: the completion of the largest piece of public art in North Dakota – the silo mural in Downtown Minot. Towering over the prairie skyline, the mural by world-renowned artist Guido van Helten has already drawn regional and national attention, including coverage by the Associated Press and visits from Midwest travelers and television personalities

“This mural is more than paint on concrete It’s a testament to what makes North Dakotans special –our resilient spirit, roll up your sleeves attitude, and belief in the power of connection across communities and generations,” said Chelsea Gleich, Co-Organizer with the Union Silos Public Art Project. While the mural itself is complete, a $40,000 funding gap remains to close out the final project costs. The organizers are calling on local businesses and individuals to contribute to the final fundraising push.

“We’re incredibly grateful for all the community members, organizations and businesses who have contributed to this project thus far, helping us raise over $300,000 to date,” said Tim Baumann, CoOrganizer with the Union Silos Public Art Project “We’re looking for some more passionate community members to say yes to funding this gift to our community and get us over the finish line ”

The project has already received generous support from organizations including POEM, Town & Country Credit Union, Magic City Lions, Scheels, CHS Sun Prairie, Main and Holmes, Walmart, Ackerman Estvold, the Xcel Energy Foundation, the Aggie Foundation, and Give 360.

Donations are tax deductible thanks to the Minot Area Council of the Arts, fiscal sponsor for the Union Silos Public Art Project, and will be accepted through January 31, 2026

“This mural is a beacon of Minot’s vibrant spirit,” said Cole Krueger, Co-Organizer for the Union Silos Public Art Project “We’re proud of the true community effort that’s gone into creating this monumental work – and we’re excited to see who joins us to finish this chapter.”

ANDESSETFORAUTHORVISITATMINOTSTATE

The Minot State University Native American Cultural Center, the MSU Diversity Council, and the Gordon B. Olson Library are proud to announce author and Minot State grad Hunter Andes will be on campus for an author visit during the University’s Native American Cultural Celebration taking place in November. Andes, the author of “The Elders: Stories from Fort Berthold,” will discuss his book during the author visit on Nov. 7 at 3:30 p.m. in the Gordon B Olson Library The event is free and open to the public, and books will be available for purchase

“Online research would report that the creation of the Garrison Dam was a contractual transaction; however, the people who contributed to the writing of ‘The Elders’ have a different view of this 1940s and 1950s U S Army Corps of Engineers project,” said Annette Mennem, director of the Minot State Native American Cultural Center “The event provides the campus and community with an opportunity to hear about the writing of this book and hear from the author ”

“The Elders: Stories from Fort Berthold,” explores the relocation of settlements Elbowoods, Nishu, Van Hook, and others, to build the Garrison Dam. In 1953, 1,700 individuals were relocated for the creation of Lake Sakakawea despite the Three Affiliated Tribes’ objection. Andes’ book explores those events through the eyes of four elders who shared their adult experiences living in the bottomlands and their subsequent relocation. Andes held a series of interviews with Marilyn Hudson and Edward “Ed” Hall, Parshall residents formerly from rural Elbowoods, and Gerald “Jerry” White and Almit Breuer, both from White Shield and formerly rural Nishu. The basis of the book was first published as a newspaper series in the McClean County Independent.

“I want people to understand what happened,” Andes said in a Minotstateu.edu student feature story in 2020. “I feel like a lot of people don’t understand; I feel like a lot of people don’t have empathy for what the (Fort Berthold) Reservation is like today because they don’t understand what truly happened “There was a series of unfortunate events caused by the federal government and the U S Army Corps of Engineers; there were alternative options available In the words of Ed Hall, you might say it was a string of bad luck ”
