THE INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL PROUDLY AWARDS MARK LYMAN THE CERTIFIED ECONOMIC DEVELOPER DESIGNATION Minot Area Chamber EDC (MACEDC) is pleased to announce that Economic Development Specialist Mark Lyman earned the nationally recognized designation of Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), denoting a mastery of skills in economic development and a dedication to personal and professional growth. This milestone marks a significant achievement and underscores Mark's commitment to excellence in the field of economic development.

“Becoming a Certified Economic Developer isn’t just a credential, it’s a career-defining milestone that demonstrates a professional’s dedication to elevating their expertise and their community impact,” said IEDC President and CEO Nathan Ohle. “Certified Economic Developers possess deep technical knowledge and bring trust and credibility to stakeholders, investors, and peers. We are thrilled to celebrate Mark Lyman on achieving this accomplishment and joining our network of professionals driving economic progress around the world.”

The CEcD designation is a prestigious acknowledgement of skilled and committed professionals in the field of economic development, establishing a benchmark of excellence within the industry. To attain this designation, candidates must successfully complete a rigorous and comprehensive examination, consisting of three parts and spanning two days. This examination assesses a practitioner's knowledge, proficiency, judgement, and critical thinking abilities in the following areas of economic development: business retention and expansion, finance & credit analysis, marketing and attraction, strategic planning, entrepreneurial & small business development, managing economic development organizations, neighborhood development strategies, real estate development & reuse, technology-led economic development, workforce development strategies, and foreign direct investment & exporting.

OPERATION

QDOBA and Jersey Mike's raised $31,235 on December 4 for Minot Area Chamber EDC's Operation Homebound program, marking one of the most successful fundraisers to date. The program purchases tickets for first term Airmen at Minot Air Force Base who couldn't not afford to go home for the holidays.

Throughout the one-day event, hundreds of community members came out to show their support by dining, donating, and spreading the word, demonstrating once again Minot’s deep commitment to the Airmen who serve and protect our nation.

“Operation Homebound is special because it represents what Minot does best - taking care of those who take care of us,” said Ryan Ackerman, MACEDC Board Chair. “A heartfelt thank you goes to Chad Thompson, Kristi Rosselli-Sullivan, and the teams at QDOBA and Jersey Mike's for this amazing fundraiser that directly helps Airmen reunite with families during the holiday season. The continued growth of Operation Homebound is a testament to what can be achieved when local businesses and community members come together for a meaningful cause.”

AMBASSADORS SUPPORT SPECIAL OLYMPICS WITH WARM WELCOME AT ANNUAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT The Minot Area Chamber EDC Ambassador Committee proudly stepped up once again this year to serve as VIP escorts during the opening ceremonies of the North Dakota Special Olympics Basketball Tournament. This year’s event featured a strong spirit of joy, inclusion, and community.

As part of their role, the Ambassadors had the privilege of welcoming dignitaries, helping to kick off the tournament with the energy and excitement it deserves.

It’s a tradition that speaks to the heart of what the committee is all about - championing community and celebrating those who make it shine.

Special Olympics North Dakota is an organization rooted in empowerment and inclusion, providing yearround sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Events like the annual basketball tournament are more than games, they’re an opportunity for athletes to showcase their talents, build confidence, and be part of something greater.

The Chamber EDC is honored to support Special Olympics North Dakota and congratulates all the participants, families, volunteers, and staff who make the event such a success year after year.

COOKIE The holidays were a little sweeter this year at Minot Air Force Base, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the Minot community and the dedicated coordination of the annual Team Minot Cookie Drive. Each December, this cherished tradition delivers homemade warmth and appreciation to the Airmen stationed at Minot AFB, many of whom are spending the holidays far from their families and hometowns.

Organized in partnership with the Minot Spouses Club, Minot Area Chamber EDC, and dozens of community members and volunteers, the 2025 cookie drive brought in more than 10,000 cookies, enough to ensure airmen across the base received a festive bag of assorted treats. These small packages of kindness go a long way in lifting spirits during the winter season, offering a taste of home and a reminder that they are appreciated.

Planning and preparation for the cookie drive begins weeks in advance, with volunteers spreading the word, collecting donations, and encouraging participation from businesses, schools, families, and organizations throughout the region. Community bakers - both seasoned pros and first-time participants - turn on their ovens and channel the holiday spirit to create everything from chocolate chip and gingerbread to frosted sugar cookies and peanut butter classics.

Store-bought donations are also welcome, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all who wish to contribute.

DRIVE The drive culminates in a cheerful day of sorting, boxing, and distributing thousands of cookies at Minot AFB. Volunteers form an assembly line to pack cookies into individual gift bags, each labeled and prepared with festive drawings by area students, before they’re delivered directly to military personnel.

The event fosters camaraderie among volunteers and sends a powerful message of unity and support from the Minot area to the base.

The cookie drive reflects a core value of the Minot community: showing appreciation through action. It’s a meaningful way for civilians to connect with and support the service members who work and live in the region. What began years ago as a small gesture of kindness has grown into a full-scale effort embraced by hundreds each year.

With another successful year now wrapped up, the Team Minot Cookie Drive continues to be a standout example of what happens when a community comes together with gratitude, creativity, and a shared purpose. As volunteers cleaned up and cookie boxes made their way to those who serve across the Minot area, the spirit of the season was unmistakable warm, welcoming, and filled with heart.

UNDERSTANDING MILITARY CULTURE: A KEY TO STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY AND WORKFORCE CONNECTIONS North Dakota residents now have a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of the service members, veterans, and military families who are part of our communities. Through the Governor’s Challenge Training Portal, a free online course series - The Basics of Military Culture - is available to help employers, healthcare providers, community members, and others gain a more meaningful appreciation for the values, experiences, and challenges that define military life.

Developed by PsychArmor, this four-video course series (totaling just 45 minutes) offers an in-depth look at military service, covering everything from the commitment and transition of service members to the inclusive nature of military culture and the benefits of service. It also highlights the vital soft skills that veterans bring to civilian workplaces and communities.

This initiative directly aligns with two of the Minot Area Chamber EDC’s strategic pillars: Military and Workforce.

By encouraging businesses and organizations to take this short, impactful training, we help create stronger support networks for those who serve and improve workplace readiness to engage veteran and militaryaffiliated talent. MINOT FEATURED IN STATEWIDE SPOTLIGHT ON NATURAL GAS ADVANTAGE Minot’s strategic positioning and infrastructure assets are once again taking center stage, this time in a feature from the North Dakota Department of Commerce highlighting the state's natural gas advantage.

The article, published in Expansion Solutions Magazine, outlines how North Dakota’s energy resources and forward-thinking communities are fueling new opportunities for industrial growth.

In the piece, Minot is prominently recognized for its role in advancing energy-driven economic development, thanks in large part to the Minot Area Chamber EDC and its efforts to prepare shovel-ready sites and enhance transportation infrastructure. The Logistics Park of North Dakota and the proposed North American Iron project are both noted as key developments tied to the region’s ability to harness energy resources for long-term industrial success.

The article also emphasizes the importance of collaborative investment in carbon capture, natural gas utilization, and energy innovation - areas where Minot and its partners continue to lead and attract national attention. WBI Energy is developing plans to build the Minot Industrial Pipeline, a key infrastructure project designed to deliver Bakken natural gas from Tioga to industrial customers in Minot.

PUBLIC INPUT REQUESTED FOR AREA TRANSIT DEVELOPMENT PLAN The Central Dakota Metropolitan Planning Organization (CDMPO) invites the public to attend an upcoming public meeting to learn more about and provide input on the Transit Development Plan for the Minot area.

The Transit Development Plan is a planning effort focused on evaluating current transit services, identifying community needs, and developing recommendations to guide future transit investments and improvements over the next five to ten years.

Two identical public input meetings will be held to provide multiple opportunities for public participation. Both meetings will take place in the Minot City Council Chambers, located at 10 3rd Avenue SW, Minot, ND 58701.

1) Tuesday, January 20 from 11:30am-1:00pm; and 2) Wednesday, January 21 from 4:30pm-6:00pm.

Attendees will be able to review project information, speak with project staff, and share feedback on transit needs, priorities, and opportunities. A recorded presentation will also play periodically, and participants may attend at any time during either meeting. Public input is a critical part of the planning process, and CDMPO encourages residents, transit riders, businesses, and other stakeholders to attend and share their perspectives.

WOMEN CONNECT TO HOST INAUGURAL INTENTIONAL COLLISIONS EVENT Minot Women Connect is thrilled to announce its inaugural Intentional Collisions event, taking place on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the Grand Oasis Hotel in Minot.

Intentional Collisions will bring together more than 100 mentors and mentees from across the region for an energizing afternoon of mentorship, networking, and professional growth. Designed to remove barriers and spark authentic connection, this signature event invites women to engage in purposeful conversations that foster learning, leadership, and collaboration.

“This event has been a dream of our committee for quite some time, think professional networking meets speed dating” said Rianne Kuhn, Chair of the Women Connect Committee. “We wanted to create a space where women can connect intentionally … not just exchange business cards, but exchange ideas, experiences, and encouragement. She also provided exciting updates and future plans for Citizen’s Alley, a vibrant downtown Minot project that reimagines public space for people, art, and local culture. MINOT AIR FORCE BASE COMMANDERS SHARE STATE OF THE BASE AT MINOT CITY COUNCIL At the December meeting of the Minot City Council, Mayor Mark Jantzer invited leaders from Task Force 21 (TF21) and Minot Air Force Base to provide a State of the Base update and highlight the strong partnership between the community and the installation.

Col. Jesse W. Lamarand, Commander of the 5th Bomb Wing, and Col. James L. Schlabach, Commander of the 91st Missile Wing, shared updates on mission priorities, readiness, and the importance of community support for Airmen and their families.

Both commanders expressed appreciation for Minot’s longstanding commitment to those who serve and the critical missions carried out from Minot AFB. The Council also viewed a community video and recognized Minot’s designation as a Great American Defense Community, awarded by the Association of Defense Communities, honoring the city’s exceptional support of the military, veterans, and military families.

Task Force 21, a committee of the Minot Area Chamber EDC, is supported by the City of Minot to lead community military support efforts and serve as the primary connector between civic leaders, military leadership, and national defense partners.

The presentation reinforced the shared commitment between city leadership, Task Force 21, and Minot Air Force Base to sustain a strong, collaborative relationship that supports mission success and makes Minot a national model for defense communities.

As the home to our military, these communities recognize the unique challenges and hard work needed to ensure military families are made to feel valued.

The Great American Defense Communities (GADC) program was developed to recognize and celebrate communities demonstrating an exceptional commitment to improving the lives of service members, veterans and their families. The program is made possible through ADC’s partnership with USAA. Minot was one of three communities recognized with the highly sought-after GADC honor during the 2025 Installation Innovation Forum in Monterey, CA.

AUTOMATION TAX CREDIT APPLICATIONS DUE JAN. 31 There’s still time to apply for North Dakota’s Automation Tax Credit—but the deadline is approaching fast.

Completed applications are due by Jan. 31.

What is the Automation Tax Credit?

This program is designed to help businesses offset the cost of machinery and equipment that automate a manufacturing process in North Dakota. Qualified projects may be eligible for a credit up to 15% of the cost of approved machinery or equipment. To qualify, a business must be certified as a primary sector business, and the equipment must be approved by the Department of Commerce’s Division of Economic Development & Finance.

What to Submit To be considered, submit a completed application (including Supplement A) and all required supporting documentation by January 31 (for purchases made in the prior year). Incomplete applications may be deemed ineligible and not processed.

MACEDC NOMINATING COMMITTEE NAMES 2026 BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Minot Area Chamber EDC Nominating Committee has selected candidates to fill the director terms and confirmed each is willing to accept the duties and responsibilities of directorship. The directors-elect shall be installed at the regularly scheduled board meeting January 14. The slate of names includes Josh Blackaby, Co-Founder and Vice President, SandPro, and John Mackner, Chief of Operations - Flooring, Tollefson’s Retail Group.

Josh’s journey in North Dakota started in 2002 when he was stationed at Minot Air Force Base with the US Air Force. After departing the Air Force, Joshua stayed in North Dakota and his career in the Oil & Gas industry began in 2009 with Hess Corporation. He quickly moved into management roles and throughout those years held EHS management positions in Drilling, Completions and Production. In January of 2019, Josh and his partners decided to make their own legacy in the Bakken and started SandPro, LLC. SandPro specializes in Wellhead, Sand Management, and Automation Technology. SandPro currently employs over 100 personnel and is proud to be a local North Dakota based service company. He holds a BS in Aeronautics from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and is married with three children. In his free time, Joshua enjoys traveling, golfing, and watching his kids in all their sporting activities. Josh currently serves as a board member of the North Dakota Petroleum Council, Greater North Dakota Chamber, and North Dakota Workforce Development Council.

John Mackner serves as a Chief Operations Officer of the Flooring Division at Tollefson's Retail Group (TRG). In his role, he oversees operations at all Carpet Garage locations in ND, SD, and MT, handles vendor relationships, budgeting, inventory management, and strategic planning for the flooring division and TRG as a whole. John has been with TRG for more than 15 years, he serves on its Board of Directors, and is actively involved in business and community leadership initiatives, most recently serving on the Board of Directors for Norsk Hostfest Association. John and his wife Emily moved to Minot in 2009 and have two daughters who are active in soccer, volleyball, and figure skating. As a family, they enjoy weekends at Lake Metigoshe when they are not at a soccer, volleyball, or figure skating competition.

TASK FORCE 21 ENGAGES IN NATIONAL STRATEGIC DETERRENCE DIALOGUE Leaders from Task Force 21 (TF21), an initiative of the Minot Area Chamber EDC, continue to elevate Minot’s voice in national conversations shaping America’s strategic deterrent and nuclear modernization efforts through active engagement with the Strategic Deterrent Coalition (SDC).

In December 2025, TF21 representatives participated in the Strategic Deterrent Coalition Board of Regents Tenth Annual Threat Workshop in Falls Church, Virginia. The workshop convened senior military leaders, nationally recognized defense experts, and policy scholars for a full day of briefings and discussion focused on the evolving global environment and the future of U.S. deterrence.

The 2025 agenda addressed a broad range of timely and complex national security and nuclear deterrence topics, including European and NATO security dynamics, artificial intelligence and strategic competition, missile defense initiatives, the recently released National Security Strategy, and the future of the Sentinel Intercontinental Ballistic Missile program. Participants also received updates on Air Force Global Strike Command priorities and regional security challenges in the Indo-Pacific and Korean Peninsula.

These discussions are directly relevant to North Dakota and the Minot region. Minot Air Force Base is the only installation in the nation that hosts two legs of the nuclear triad, placing Minot at the center of America’s strategic deterrence mission. Engagement at forums such as the SDC Threat Workshop ensures that community leaders who support these missions remain informed, connected, and engaged as national defense priorities evolve.

TF21 leaders serving on the Strategic Deterrent Coalition Board of Regents continue to represent North Dakota’s interests while reinforcing the importance of sustained investment, modernization, and community advocacy in support of the nuclear enterprise.

Through participation in national-level discussions like the SDC Threat Workshop, TF21 advances its mission to educate, advocate, and strategically engage on issues critical to the long-term success of Minot Air Force Base and the nation’s security. These efforts ensure Minot remains an informed, credible, and respected voice in conversations that shape the future of America’s deterrence posture.

TEN MINOT STATE STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS FROM SADIE, ALEXANDER, AND DR. JOHN A. HARCHANKO ENDOWMENT Minot State University students Halia Aldrich, Dusten Charbonneau, Maria Cree, Kerry Israel, Zaelyn Jeannotte, Melissa Knight, Melissa Morin, Madison Mundy, Alexis Murphy, and Meadow Poitra have been awarded a total of $47,400 in scholarships from the Sadie, Alexander, and Dr. John A. ANNE CARLSEN NAMES LEANN GUMKE AS DIRECTOR OF NURSING Anne Carlsen is pleased to announce the appointment of Leann Gumke as Director of Nursing. Leann returns to Anne Carlsen after previously dedicating more than two decades to the organization, where she built a career centered on compassionate care, strong clinical leadership, and advocacy for individuals with complex medical and developmental needs. During her time at Anne Carlsen, she held progressive roles including Direct Support Professional, Nurse Technician, and Registered Nurse, most recently serving as a charge nurse overseeing care coordination, staff support, and quality assurance across the Jamestown campus.

ACKERMAN-ESTVOLD WELCOMES ROBERT STRISHOCK AS CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION SPECIALIST Robert Strishock has joined the Ackerman-Estvold Minot office as a Construction Administration Specialist. Strishock earned Bachelor of Environmental Design (BEV) from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado and his MBA from Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. Robert has extensive experience in the full construction administration process from project coordination, plan & permit review, scheduling and budget oversight, estimating, and other project management components.

His responsibilities will focus on projects for our Architectural group collaborating with the Project Manager through all various aspects of the phase of building projects, Strishock will be responsible for resolving construction issues to meet design requirements, oversee client schedules, and monitor budget goals and assist with administrative documentation during construction.

MSU STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE BRINGS IN RECORD DONATIONS FOR DVCC Even with early uncertainty about how many donations they would receive, both Hoogensen and Engel said the turnout exceeded expectations. Engel, who used his personal vehicle for the delivery, was equally impressed. He added that transporting the donations proved simple thanks to assistance from DVCC staff.

Behind the scenes, the effort relied heavily on steady communication between SAAC leadership and team representatives.

A month-long winter clothing and food drive led by the Minot State University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) brought in record donations for the Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC) this October, filling a minivan with bags and bins gathered from every athletic team.

Engel said he and Hoogensen worked closely with SAAC advisor and Faculty Athletic Representative Kristi Berg, MSU professor of computer information systems, to coordinate details. Hoogensen acknowledged a challenge faced by many college students: asking them to part with items they may also need. She added that the drive reflects the values shared by Minot State’s student athletes.

Mallory Hoogensen, a senior softball player from Ankeny, Iowa and SAAC’s president, said the initiative grew from years of collaboration with the DVCC and the committee’s commitment to maintaining that partnership, even without a conference-level directive.

For Engel, the biggest takeaway was witnessing the generosity within the athletic community. Looking ahead, Hoogensen hopes SAAC can continue to expand its service efforts.

Hoogensen credited SAAC philanthropy officer Noah Iosefa, a senior football player from Holt, Michigan, with helping initiate the project. As planning began, Hoogensen focused on motivating student athletes to see the impact they could make.

To sustain enthusiasm, she tapped into a beloved campus tradition: the Beaver Cup.

“I see SAAC continuing to grow its presence and impact on community service projects in the future by continuing to plan at least a semester in advance of events,” she said.

“I would want people to remember how big of an impact they can have on other lives, even if it does not feel like they have that same ability.”

“I motivated the teams to participate by creating a friendly competition to earn Beaver Cup points that go towards our biggest award handed out at BESPY’s, the Beaver Cup,” she added.

Alex Engel, SAAC vice president and senior baseball player from Centennial, Colorado, agreed that the competitive aspect played a key role.

MINOT HOT TOTS & HONEYBEES ANNOUNCE 2026 SCHEDULE The Minot Hot Tots and Minot Honeybees have announced their 2026 schedules, setting the stage for another unforgettable season of baseball and softball at Corbett Field.

The Hot Tots will kick off their fourth Northwoods League season on Memorial Day (Monday, May 25) with a 6:35 p.m. matchup against local North Dakota rival Badlands Big Sticks, marking the first opening game in the team’s history without a start against the St. Cloud Rox. This season the Hot Tots will host 36 home games, taking on eight Great Plains Division opponents.

Two of these games are sure to create standout moments this season: the Hot Tots will hit the road for a pair of special home games in an off-site North Dakota location, marking the town’s first time ever hosting a Northwoods League matchup.

Back for their third season after a historic playoff run, the Honeybees are set to light up Corbett Field with 21 home games in 2026; 5 double headers and 16 single games.

The Hot Tots and Honeybees also look forward to debuting some major changes to the ballpark experience. 4 BEARS ROAR ANNOUNCE HEAD COACH AND SIGN FIRST PLAYER The 4 Bears Roar professional basketball team, proud members of The Basketball League (TBL), are pleased to name the head coach and announce the signing of the first player in franchise history.

The Roar are pleased to announce Wayne Casey as the inaugural head coach for the upcoming 2026 professional season. An experienced and dedicated coach for many years, Casey brings his hard nosed, work hard mentality to the 4 Bears Event Center. In 2025, Coach Casey led the Logansport Iron Horses of the TBL to a 21-8 record and a 3rd round appearance in the TBL Playoffs, just missing out on making the Championship Finals. Prior to Logansport, he led the West Virginia Grind to a 20-6 record and an appearance in the TBL playoffs. The Charleston, WV native will join the Roar for the league meetings, combine, and TBL Draft in Indianapolis, January 30th through February 1st.

The 4 Bears Roar enter the league as an expansion franchise for the 2026 TBL season. The Roar will take roughly 22 players into their training camp in February, tentatively set in Las Vegas, NV. Players who have signed free agent contracts, invites from various tryouts and combines, and those selected by the Roar in the 2026 TBL Draft will report. The Roar will open up the regular season on the road at the reigning conference champion Great Falls Electric on Friday, February 27th. The full season schedule will be released soon as well as season ticket information.

The Roar are also pleased to announce the signing of guard Tavin Cummings. The 6'5" Memphis, TN native will join the Roar for Main Camp in February in preparations for the inaugural season of the new professional basketball franchise. Cummings has played professionally for 8 seasons both in the US and overseas. His most recent international contract came with the Turiones de Caborca Sonora in Mexico's professional league in late 2025. During the 2025 TBL season, Cummings played for the Wenatchee Bighorns in the West Conferece. He was named a 1st-Team All TBL selection after averaging 25 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. In a contest against the Great Falls Electric, Cummings went off for 44 points in the 135-129 victory. In 2022, Cummings won the TBL Championship as a member of the Shreveport-Bossier City Mavericks. The 2017 graduate of Concordia College (AL) has had professional stops in Armenia, Belarus, Mexico, and more.

MARY VAN HANEGHAN AS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER The Board of Directors of Easterseals Goodwill North Dakota is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Mary Van Haneghan as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective August 11, 2025. Following a comprehensive and highly competitive national search led by Sagency, an executive search and leadership consulting firm, the search committee unanimously and enthusiastically recommended Dr. Van Haneghan to the Board of Directors. Her appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the organization.

“I am honored to build upon this legacy and lead Easterseals Goodwill North Dakota into its next chapter of impact and innovation,” said Dr. Van Haneghan.

Dr. Van Haneghan brings over two decades of experience leading local, state, and national nonprofit organizations with budgets exceeding $50 million and teams of 500+ across both centralized and remote settings. She is known for providing steady, visionary leadership—especially during transitions following longtenured CEOs—and is recognized for her focus on operational excellence, financial stewardship, and strong community engagement. In addition to her expertise in nonprofit leadership, Dr. Van Haneghan brings significant experience in retail operations, real estate, and property management—key elements of Goodwill’s business model. She has successfully managed extensive thrift operations, led high-impact social enterprises, and implemented strategic business initiatives that resulted in meaningful growth and operational efficiency.

Yet Dr. Van Haneghan’s story is not just one of strategy and numbers—it is rooted in heart. She has dedicated her career to advancing equity and opportunity for underserved communities, with a focus on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), as well as veterans, military families, opportunity youth, older adults, and individuals facing barriers to employment. Her work has spanned workforce development, inclusive education, job training, and employment support programs funded at the local, state, and federal levels.

Her professional journey has included leadership roles at both The Arc and Easterseals, and she has worked across multiple regions of the U.S. in both local and national affiliate roles. This gives her a broad perspective and deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the Easterseals and Goodwill networks.

Dr. Van Haneghan is a nationally recognized leader and recipient of multiple honors, including the Rising Star Award and awards for Program Innovation with The Arc. She pioneered The Arc of the Capital Area’s Autism Assets @ Work program, which placed individuals with autism in internships at Dell that led to full-time corporate roles—an initiative featured in The New York Times. She also helped advance inclusive higher education through partnerships with Think College, a national initiative supporting students with intellectual disabilities. Her leadership has driven the creation of inclusive child development centers, adult day programs, transition schools, and government-funded job training programs—all closely aligned with Easterseals Goodwill’s mission of promoting education, employment, and independence.

Dr. Van Haneghan earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Buffalo, a Master’s in Adult Education and Literacy from Buffalo State College, and a Doctorate in Education from Walden University. Her academic research has focused on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, exploring everything from institutional history to the value of post-secondary education.

LITTLE KNOWN NORTH DAKOTA TAX CREDIT ALLOWS TAXPAYERS TO DIRECT INCOME TAXES TO HELP FAMILIES As North Dakotans prepare for year-end tax planning, Dakota Hope Clinic is helping raise awareness of a littleknown state tax credit that allows individuals and businesses to redirect a portion of their North Dakota income taxes to support families in need.

Under North Dakota Century Code 57-38-01.39, business and individual taxpayers may claim a North Dakota income tax credit equal to up to 50% of what they owe in ND income taxes, with a maximum credit of $2,500, when they donate to a qualified pregnancy help center such as Dakota Hope Clinic. To qualify for the current tax year, contributions must be made by December 31. Dakota Hope Clinics are located in Minot, Tioga, and Bottineau.

“This is not widely known, even among many tax professionals,” said Tim Knutson, Director of Development at Dakota Hope Clinic. “But it gives North Dakotans a meaningful choice. Instead of all their state tax dollars going to the government, they can direct part of what they owe to support women, children, and families in their own communities.”

The tax credit is based on a taxpayer’s North Dakota income tax liability, not on the amount of the donation itself. Many donors choose to estimate what they owe in ND income taxes and consider giving up to half of that amount, up to the $2,500 credit limit.

Dakota Hope Clinic provides pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, parenting education, material support, and compassionate, life-affirming care to women, men, and families facing unexpected pregnancies. The clinic is supported solely by private donations and receives no government funding, making community support essential to sustaining its services and expanding care for families across northwestern North Dakota. One donor described the credit simply: “It’s a no-brainer. Do I want this money to go to the state, or to help families in crisis right here at home?”

SRT OFFERING $15,000 IN 2026 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES SRT will award seven local scholarships totaling $15,000 to students in 2026. National scholarships are also available through SRT’s partnership with the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS). The SRT College Scholarship program will award six $2,000 scholarships. The program evaluates community involvement, school activities, an essay response, and grade point average.

The SRT Technical Scholarship will award $3,000 to one student. This scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors or undergraduate students studying telecommunications or other computer-technology-related fields. SRT is also a member of FRS to participate in a national scholarship program. Local students submitting an FRS application are eligible for multiple national scholarship opportunities.

Applications are available online at srt.com/srtcares. FRS Scholarship applications are due February 14 and SRT Scholarship applications are due by 5:00 pm on March 20. Scholarship recipients will be announced in April and an awards lunch will be held for the winners.

MINOT STATE LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE OFFERS MULTIPLE CERAMICS CLASSES Minot State University’s Lifelong Learning Institute will offer multiple ceramics classes as part of its Spring 2026 schedule, including weekly and monthly open studios.

Tuesday evenings feature demonstrations designed to enhance your skills, covering topics ranging from plaster mold making and slip casting to clay and glaze mixing, advanced throwing, hand-building, sculptural techniques, and various firing methods. Children ages 12-plus may register with a concurrently registered and attending parent/guardian.

The schedule begins on Feb. 3 with both Weekly Open Studio and Monthly Open Studio. Weekly Open Studio is scheduled from Feb. 3 to April 14, on Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m., and costs $250 for 10 sessions. Monthly Open Studio is also Feb. 3 to April 14 on Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $100 per month (four sessions).

Registered attendees will receive a small private locker and use of studio equipment. The price includes a fee for clay, glaze, and firing.

Session instructor is Linda Olson, a former Minot State University professor who retired from teaching at MSU in 2024 after nearly 35 years with the University. A North Dakota native, she earned her bachelor’s degrees in art, English, and psychology at MSU, a Master of Arts from the University of Montana, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Dakota. Olson has worked in several public collections, including the North Dakota Council on the Arts, the Skien, Norway Art Center, the University of North Dakota, North Dakota State University PEARS Collection, and Minot State University, as well as in many private collections.

DAKOTA BUSINESS LENDING AWARDED $70M FOR INVESTMENT IN LOWINCOME/DISTRESSED AREAS Dakota Business Lending (DBL) has been selected by the U.S. Treasury Department's Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) Fund to receive a $70 million New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) award. This is their fourth NMTC allocation, following two $30M awards received in 2021 and 2022, and a $50M award received in 2024. They remain the first and only North Dakota-based financing entity to be chosen and one of the country’s top 100 community-focused organizations recognized this year.

NMTC is run and administered through the U.S. Department of Treasury. This year, the program awarded a total of $10 billion in allocation authority to 142 of the 216 Community Development Entity (CDEs) applicants across the nation through a competitive and challenging application process, who then use their NMTC awards to further the mission of the program by encouraging small business growth and expansion, domestic manufacturing and reliable job-producing projects, and rural hospitals and essential health care infrastructure.

DBL’s NMTC priorities remain the same as prior years in assisting small businesses in low-income or distressed areas and creating lasting employment opportunities in those areas through jobs that are both quality and accessible.

To date, DBL has allocated a total of $81M in NMTC awards to nine qualifying small businesses located in lowincome/distressed areas in Bismarck and Fargo. These allocations have had a $247M+ direct project impact and helped create and retain 646 permanent jobs for citizens across the state. “We are incredibly honored to receive another NMTC allocation and excited to continue bringing this powerful program to the businesses that need it most,” commented Steve Dusek, President & CEO. “This program allows us to partner with businesses and local communities in a way that sparks growth, expands opportunity, assists domestic manufacturing, strengthens the local small business economy, drives private investment, and produces measurable and lasting outcomes for which the program was intended. DBL continues to maximize and spread economic impact by encouraging the “pay-it-forward” concept, asking businesses assisted through the program to “repay” the kindness by financially supporting local organizations in need. To date, seven businesses have participated in DBL’s “pay-it-forward” initiative and donated more than $350,000 to 14 local non-profits.

DBL uses the NMTC program as a unique financing mechanism that provides gap financing with interest only payments for seven years and then converts to equity in the business – principal payment is not required.

Projects must be in a NMTC eligible area, large scale and transformative projects (greater than $7 million), and provide quality/accessible jobs or services to low income and distressed populations.

NEW SIGNAGE HIGHLIGHTS GROWING ‘BUCKSHOT’S BACKYARD’ TRAIL SYSTEM A series of new signs now mark Minot State University’s bike and walking trail, “Buckshot’s Backyard,” giving users clearer access points and improving safety at one of the University’s newest outdoor attractions.

Installed in early October by the MSU Facilities Management team with sponsorship support from Beaver Creek, the signs represent a major step forward in establishing the trail as a well-used community asset.

“We wanted people to know the trail was there and to help keep pedestrians and cyclists safe,” said Kelsey Higginson, assistant professor in exercise science and rehabilitation, who spearheaded the project.

“Getting the signage in place has been a big goal, and Beaver Creek was willing to sponsor the signs, which made all the difference.” Beaver Creek, founded in 2008, is a leading logistics provider in the Bakken Basin with roots that lie in its Native American heritage. Based in New Town, the 100% Native-owned company delivers exceptional service, fosters community growth, and is committed to land stewardship, emphasizing sustainable practices and respect for the environment.

The signage marks three loops — the Amphitheater Loop, Facilities Loop, and Coulee Loop — totaling nearly two miles when connected. Designed as a natural dirt trail with no excavation, the system winds through the open area on the north end of campus, providing rolling hills, scenic viewpoints, and opportunities for walking, biking, running, and even snowshoeing in winter. “The trail will become more visible and smoother through foot and bike traffic,” Higginson said. “The more people who use it, the better it will become.”

Buckshot’s Backyard began in 2024 after Higginson sought a place to teach mountain biking basics for MSU’s new outdoor recreation and lifetime pursuits course, designed to prepare future physical education teachers.

After early conversations with Val’s Cyclery, she approached Minot State President Steven Shirley at the university’s Staff Senate Fall Kickoff. “He said MSU owned the property all the way to 20th Avenue,” Higginson explained. “I formally asked if I could develop a trail there once the school year started.” What followed was a grassroots collaboration. Higginson cleared the first path herself with a weed trimmer. Val’s Cyclery helped design the initial coulee trail, and trail builder Carson Schnell shaped it into a rideable route. Additional loops were laid out and cut before winter 2024, and a campus poll later gave the trail its name: Buckshot’s Backyard.

Today, the trail is open to the public whenever classes are not actively using it. E-assist bikes are allowed, though motorsports are prohibited. The path makes for a wonderful snowshoe trail in winter, and one adventurous faculty member has cross-country skied the course. Higginson noted there is a plan moving forward for better maintenance with a mowing schedule for next year Higginson hopes the trail continues to inspire new uses. “I mostly wanted to put an area of campus that just sits there to some sort of productive use,” she said. “Now that the trail is there, other groups have talked about adding on — science wants native plants for a scavenger hunt, the Looyenga Leadership Center is considering a challenge course. “It could become a really cool area for people to get out and walk, bike, run, or snowshoe.”
