07: PRIORITISING HEALTH & SAFETY
Health and safety in the mining industry is a critical focus yet achieving “zero harm” remains an aspirational goal. Despite advancements, incidents persist, raising the question: is technology the underutilised key to unlocking safer workplaces? Modern tools like AI, IoT, and automation promise enhanced monitoring, predictive maintenance, and reduced human exposure to hazardous environments. However, adoption gaps suggest these solutions have yet to reach their full potential. Learning from past mistakes is essential. Each incident should serve as a lesson, preventing recurrence and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Alongside this, mining companies must prioritise the well-being of surrounding communities, ensuring ethical and sustainable practices.
Equally vital is addressing mental health in a tech-driven era. The pressures of a high-risk industry demand robust support systems, balancing innovation with compassion. As we move forward, collaboration and a holistic approach will shape the industry’s future.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DOWNSTREAM BUYERS
Africa holds a significant portion of the world’s critical minerals, including copper, cobalt, lithium, nickel, graphite, manganese and more, which are essential for producing batteries used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.
As the global demand for these minerals increases – driven by global consumers’ needs for a decarbonised world – manufacturers in the automotive, aerospace, clean energy, and technology sectors must secure sufficient minerals to build resilient supply chains, while also meet the rising global demand for sustainable and ethically sourced critical minerals.
Mining Indaba supports downstream buyers understand Africa’s critical minerals wealth potential while navigating geopolitical and regulatory risks and infrastructure limitations. There will be several dialogues, networking and content agendas to unpack the latest developments around environmental management, price volatility, and localisation of skills and downstream value addition. All these support downstream buyers’ objectives to grow their businesses, collaborating with the continent to do so.
THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITIES AND INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
In 2025, Mining Indaba will, for the first time, recognise and acknowledge one of the African mining sector ’s most important stakeholder groups – mining communities, civil society, and indigenous people.
