EDITOR’S NOTES

December 21, 2017 marks 50 years since the day when the first Malay-Indonesian Readings were held at the Institute of Oriental Languages, M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University (now ISAA MSU). Their existence became possible thanks to the initiative of Soviet orientalists Natalia F. Aliyeva, Boris B. Parnickel and Vilen V. Sikorsky who were able to persuade Academician Alexander A. Huber to hold regular meetings of researchers of the Malay-Indonesian world, also known as Nusantara, and obtained his consent to become a patron of the Readings. Since then, every month from September to May, scholars, post-graduate students, students from various universities and research institutes in Moscow have had the opportunity to meet to share their findings and research results on a wide range of issues in the field of history, culture, literature, arts, ethnography of the countries of the region.

There were different events in the history of the Reading. In the late 1970s, they were forced to leave the ISAA and functioned within the ethnographic commission of the Moscow Center of the Russian Geographical Society of the USSR Academy of Sciences, since 1990 they became the nucleus of the Nusantara Society created by Boris B. Parnikel. Finally, in 1998, after the creation of the Nusantara Centre at the ISAA, they once again returned to the place of their origins.

Over the past half-century, about 450 seminars (9 per year) have been held, including special (sometimes two-day) seminars and at least two large international conferences with up to 30 foreign speakers. The last such conference was the 11th European Colloquium on Indonesian and Malay Studies (ECIMS) in 1999. In addition, 19 collections of “Malay-Indonesian Studies” were published on the basis of seminar presentations. At one time, quite a large international activity was conducted, one of the concrete results of which is the extensive library of the Nusantara Centre at the ISAA, Moscow State University which usually hosts medium format meetings (up to 30 participants).

Time is not always favorable to participants of seminars. In the years since the 19th edition of the Readings, a number of their permanent members left this world: Vladimir Ivanovich Pechkurov (1931-2013), Natalia Fyodorovna Aleva (1931-1915), Vladimir Alexandrovich Tyurin (1933-1915), Lyudmila Fyodorovna Pakhomova (1931-2016), Avenir Stepanovich Tesolkin (1930-2016), Svet Sergeyevich Zakharov (1930-2016). We’ll miss them all very much. But life continues. The generations of students and scientists are changing, but the Readings continue and, we hope, will continue to live!

This jubilee collection includes both papers of regular Reading participants presented at seminars, and articles of foreign colleagues – their participation attests high international authority of the Malay-Indonesian Readings and the Nusantara Society created on their basis. Articles of the collection reflect the diversity of cultures of the peoples of the region, its unique image.

The collection, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Malay-Indonesian Readings, continues a series of Malayan-Indonesian Studies and includes a number of scientific articles on the history, culture, literature, religion and linguistics of the vast Nusantara region. All articles are provided with English annotations. Among the authors of the articles are Russian scientists (L.V. Goriaeva, T.A. Denisova, A. Yu. Drugov, L.A. Kartashova, I.R. Katkova, Kiseleva, A.K. Ogloblin, V.A. Pogadaev, V.V. Sikorsky, G.M. Sorokina, N.A. Tolmachev, M.Yu. Ulyanov, M.V. Frolova, S.F. Chlenova), and scientists of other countries (Narudin from Indonesia, Ahmat Adam, Irwan Abu Bakar, Talaibek Musaev and Jamila Mohd from Malaysia). The outcome of the elections of the governor in the Indonesian capital Jakartain 2017 showed that Islamic radicals with some political parties behind them were more active and successful than the parties of the government coalition and their supporters, the Indonesian Army being almost the only active force apposing radicals who were in fact violating the Constitution and the State Ideology. President Joko Widodo was clearly worried with the situation. He issued the decree regulating the activities of mass organizations. One of them Hizbuth Tahrir Indonesia wanting creation of Islamic caliphate was dissolved. But to confront Islamic radicals more active support of the society is needed, especially of the Moslem community.

Tatiana DENISOVA, PhD THE JOHOR’S HISTORIOGRAPHY XVIII-XIX CENTURIES REGARDING THE SULTAN’S STATUS: BETWEEN ADAT AND SHARIATE

Essays from Malay Muslim historiography of Johor from XVIII to XIX centuries (Hikayat Siak, Peringatan Sejarah Negeri Johor, Tuhfat al-Nafis etc.) contain information on rulers and their origin, the elite and those in the upper crust of society, in addition to their families and also including information on all those who resided at court. Scholars have correctly assumed such works to be veritable encyclopedias of Malay life. The main focus is the figure of sultan as a political and spiritual leader of the state. The detailed study of the texts showed

that sultan and his status as described in the primer sources mentioned above were based on the Islamic tradition and determined (regulated) by the Shariate law. At the same time, in this system there are also some adat elements. The textual analysis helped to determine that these pre-Islamic elements were preserved in some fields of the administrative legislation, especially in the field of court regulations and protocols.

Talaibek MUSAEV, PhD; Jamila MOHD , PhD “LOOK EAST POLICY” AND ATTEMPTS TO IMPLEMENT JAPANESE LANGUAGE EDUCATION AND JAPANESE LABOR ETHICS IN MALAYSIA

This article examines the role of the Japanese language in the educational system of Malaysia within the framework of the “Look East Policy” program that has been designed to learn and adopt experience of Japanese economic development by understanding traditional, work ethical and moral values of the Japanese people. This article focuses also on the distinctive features of language teaching in different educational institutions in the country. Also in the article, the financial part of the «Look East Policy» is also discussed.

THE BOOK OF ANTONIO DE MARGA SUCESOS DE LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS (1609) AS A SOURCE ON THE HISTORY OF THE OF

THE SPANISH “PENETRATION” TO THE PHILIPPINES

The article deales with the work of Antonio de Morga (1559-1636) “History of the Philippine Islands” which occupies a special place in the Spanish tradition of describing the Philippines in the late 16th – early 17th centuries. This is the most important source for the history of the archipelago. It sheds light on the main stages in the establishment of Spanish rule in the Philippines. It is distinguished by its completeness, clarity and expressiveness of the syllable, the saturation of the actual data and the living pictures of the described time. Along with the analysis of the source, the text translated into Russian by O.S. Dementievskaya also is attached.

GORIAEVA, PhD IN SEARCH OF THE GENRE: THE MEMOIRS OF ABDULLAH BIN ABDULKADIR MUNSHI (1796-1854)

In the cultural history of Nusantara Abdullah bin Abdulkadir Munshi occupies a special place and is usually called the founder of modern Malay and Indonesian literatures. His memoirs “The History of Abdullah” / Hikayat Abdullah – have no equal in Malay literary history. The writer was an eye-witness and participant of the most important events which took place in his homeland in the first half of the XIX century. Abdullah’s memoirs give evidence that he perfectly mastered all the techniques proper to Malay narrative tradition of his time – both

oral and written. Although the story is built up chronologically, as it was the rule in the European memoir literature, it was influenced not least by the standards of traditional Malay prose, viz. “framed stories”. Such folkloric turns as proverbs and sayings are often used by Abdullah. With their help, the author sought to clothe the narrative in a form more familiar to the local reader than the lengthy, “rational” explanations. The same role is played by quatrains (pantun), which, according to tradition, serve as a poetic commentary and a moral assessment to a particular episode. For Abdullah (as for most of the Malay authors of the past), the edifying mission of literature was very important. It is obvious that the book of Abdullah, due to its innovative nature, can hardly be unequivocally attributed to this or that genre of literature. In our opinion it is an attempt to find the writer’s own identity and to combine the view” from within “his native culture with a look at it “from the outside”.

NARUDIN NOTES ABOUT THE MODERN POETRY OF INDONESIA

An Indonesian poet and literary critic Narudin analyzes the state of modern Indonesian poetry. After a brief excursion into the history (poets Amir Hamzah, Chairil Anwar, Taufiq Ismail), he concentrates on the features of the creativity of Sapardi Djoko Damono, Subagio Sastrowardoyo, Sutarji Chalzum Bahri, Abdul Hadi WM, Afrizal Malna, Mardi Luhung, Joko Pinurbo.

RUSSIA-MALAYSIA: CREDENTIALS OF THE LITERATURE (ON MUTUAL TRANSLATIONS AND INFLUENCE OF RUSSIAN LITERATURE)

The civilizational dialogue in the field of literature established between Russia and Malaysia in the 1950s not only successfully continues, but also assumes a stable character, acquiring new forms. The Malay proverb says: “You will not love without knowing”. There is no doubt that the mutual knowledge of two peoples through translations of literature helps strengthen mutual understanding and the bonds of friendship between them. The article also examines the influence of Russian literature on the formation of modern literature in Malaysia, and the attached list gives the name of the main authors and their translated works.

ABOUT THE ACQUAINTANCE WITH RUSSIAN LITERATURE IN THE PHILIPPINES AND THE TRANSLATIONS OF PHILIPPINE LITERATURE TO RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

The best samples of Russian literature are widely known in the Philippines and have had a noticeable impact on the work of many Philippine writers. However, the Russian classics mainly are known through English translations. Russian poetry was translated by Amado Vero Hernandez and Herman Menado Bognot. There are more translations of Philippine literature in Russia, thanks to efforts of Russian translators among them to I.V. Podberezensky and V. A. Makarenko.

POLITICS, HISTORY, MYTHOLOGY AND PHILOSOPHY OF JAVANISM AND SO ON IN THE NOVEL BY INDONESIAN WRITER AYU UTANI «THE NUMBER FU»

Aju Utami is a prominent-figure in the contemporary Indonesian literature. Her very first novel’ «Saman» with its telling criticism of Suharto’s New Order run into 37 editions and was translated into many languages. The action of her third novel «Number-Fu» unfolds on the edge of the XXI century on the background of country’s transition to the democratic form of goverment opposed by the high army circles. The main theme of the book is the preservation of environment destroyed by big enterprises. The author draws reader’s attention to the historical background of national being and intricate philosophical problems.

Mass genre of adaptation in the contemporary Indonesian literature – on the bases of detectives «Secrets of the Old Jakarta» and «Temple Sukuh» by Rizki Ridyasmara. The article analyzes two works of a modern Indonesian writer –examples of the so called “low modern literature”, the heiress of literature in the spoken Malay language (Melayu Rendah) which was used by residents of Batavia, the colonial capital of the Netherlands East Indies, and then, in fact, the present Jakarta.

THE KRUSENSTERN’S MALAY MANUSCRIPT: THE “SULALAT U’S-SALATIN”

In my study of the Krusenstern’s manuscript Sulalat u’s-Salatin currently kept in the Oriental archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences at St. Petersburg I found that apart from Kawi and Sanskrit vocabulary, there are numerous other foreign words, especially from Persian, Arabic and Sundanese. One example is the Persian word Kaid ( meaning governor or ruler), which is the title of the father of the Indian princess who married Iskandar Zukarnain. Every transliterator has since the time of John Leyden (1810) read and transliterated it as “Kida” which does not convey any meaning. Another is “Supraba” (meaning light or glorious) which over the centuries has been transcribed as “Sapurba”. Due to the absence of Arabic vowels in most of the words in Jawi, many people have misread and therefore wrongly transliterated such words as “Bhuta” or “Bota” (a demon), “Oya Deco” (Siamese noble) and “Bo Banya” (Siamese king). They have instead read them as “Bat, “AwiDicu”, “AwiDicu”, and “Bubunnya”. In fact even the meaning ofthe word “pertuturan”(from Kawi pituturan) of the sub-title for the“Sulalat u’s-Salatin”(as in “Pertuturan Segala

Raja-Raja”), has not been fully grasped by most transliterators. The word which means genealogy, recollection, history and reminder to all rulers, has been misread as either “perturunan” or “peraturan” both by the Orientalists as well as local (Malay and Indian Muslim) transliterators. The following article discusses the latest edition of the “SejarahMelayu” that this writer has undertaken. It is an attempt to show where the previous transliterators have erred in their transliteration of the “SejarahMelayu” from Jawi to Rumi.

Alexander OGLOBLIN, Dr NOTES ON MALAY DIALECTS IN KALIMANTAN

This article referring to works of Sander Adelaar, James Collins and other authors, supplies some data on Salako dialect of the Kendayan language of Malayo-Dayak group and the Brunei dialect of the Malay language, highlighting archaic features of Malayic isolects of Kalimantan (in comparison with other Malay dialects).

METHODOLOGY AND PRACTICE OF TRANSFER OF INDONESIAN PROPER NAMES IN RUSSIAN

The article describes some of the problems of interlingual transfer (transcription and transliteration) of foreign proper names in the Russian tradition, especially on the example of some languages of Indonesia. Considerable attention is paid to the experience, the rules and principles of such transfer, using the methods of graphic and phonetic similarity, and combinations thereof in the scientific and reference literature, journalism, cartography and other disciplines. Problems of transfer of certain religious terms merges with the proper name are also touched.

NOTES AND MATERIALS

ON SULA-SANANA LANGUAGE IN NORTH MALUKU PROVINCE OF EASTERN INDONESIA

The paper deals with Sula-Sanana, an under-documented Austronesian language of the Maluku Utara province of Eastern Indonesia. The language is spoken in the Sula Archipelago, which includes the islands of Sanana, Taliabo, and Mangon. This archipelago has been frequently listed among the least studied regions in Indonesia: as for Sula, even the number of Sula dialects is not known. James T. Collins (1981,1982) and Tobias Bloyd (2015) consider that there are only two main dialects of Sula, which referred to as Mangon and Sanana by Bloyd. Our field data for this language comprising a 508-item wordlist and 36 sentences were collected from Hasan Umaternate and L. Mannur, two natives of the islands of Sula. In short, it worth to say that comparison of the Sanana wordlist compiled by Bloyd and the wordlist fulfilled by our informant Hasan Umaternate, a native of Sanana, the main town on the same-named island, shows that both lists are mostly coincided. Our brief grammatical notes describe Sula-Sanana as a language typologically similar to the other Eastern Indonesia languages.

CULTURE AND RELIGION

15 YEARS OF E-SASTERA IN MALAYSIA

Significant and continous service to provide a platform for the public to publish their literary work on the internet had been introduced in Malaysia in February 2002 by the informal social movement eSastera led by Irwan Abu Bakar. The portal specifies that the publications must contain multimedia or cyber elemets. The informal (unregistered) movement also plays a role in promoting the publication of literary work on the internet through off-line activities like literary meetings, literary courses, and giving awards for e-publications, particularly those writings published in the portal e-Sastera.com which was set up by eSastera. It also publishes the e-writings into conventional books by the company Esastera Enterprise. In 2010, eSastera was registered with the Registrar of Society, Malaysia to become the NGO known as the Persatuan Aktivis E-sastera Malaysia (or E-SASTERA). In 2016, it initiated the formation of an ASEAN regional e-literature movement by joining forces with one literary society each in Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, and Thailand. The movement is named ASEAN Association of Literary Communities (GAKSA). GAKSA carries out activities publishing poetry antologies as well as setting-up a physical activity centre in Banten, Indonesia known as the ASEAN Literary House. In 2016, it gave award to chosen e-literature activists. The award is called the ASEAN E-Writer Award. Shortly after that, GAKSA teamed-up with the portal Poesysite.com based in the USA to form the international literary body known as the World Assocition of Literary Communities (WALC).

TREATISE TUHFAT AL-RAGHIBIN FI BAYANI HAKIKAT AL-IMAN FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MANUSCRIPTS, RUSSIAN FCADEMY OF SCIENCES

The present article deals with a Malay manuscript (B4024) “Malay treatise Tuhfat al-Raghibin fi bayani hakikat al-iman (A Gift addressed to those desirous of an exposition of the essence of the Muslim faith) The survey touches on the problems of Sufi history and literature on Malay-Indonesian Archipelago in the 18th century based on the analysis of original text preserved in the collection of Institute of Oriental Studies in St. Petersburg. The manuscript was written in Jawi (Arabic Malay) in 1188H/1774M at the request of one of the noblemen of the 18th century, suggestively Sultan Najmuddin of Palembang by a prominent Sufi and religious scholar ‘Abd as-Samad al-Palembani.

Ludmila KARTASHOVA THE FORMATION OF THE IMAGE OF MADAGASCAR IN RUSSIA

The Russians have been interested in a distant and mysterious island of Madagascar for a very long time. The information about it has been coming to Russia for no less than three centuries. For the first time Madagascar was men-

tioned in an 18thcentury Russian translation of a book by German geographer J. Hubner A Short Description of the Land and Sea Circle (1719).

The first Russians to see Madagascar were a large group of exiles from Kamchatka. In the 1770s they escaped from their exile and sail to Africa. Moritz Benyovsky, the leader of the group, was a Hungarian count. He left the most interesting records of his trip. The first detailed description of Madagascar was compiled by the seamen of the clipper “Dzhigit”, which docked at the island of Sainte-Marie in 1890. The biggest impact on the island had a stay by a squadron of Russian Navy in 1904-1905, when 45 ships were docked near the island Nosy-Be for several months. From the beginning of the 19th century information about Madagascar appeared in the numerous Russian editions of “Universal Geographies”, “Travels around the World” and “Descriptions of the World”. These were mainly translations of the works by European authors and notes of travellers and missionaries. Only at the turn of the 20th century articles on Madagascar by Russian authors began to be published by Russian journals and encyclopaedias. The first book by a Russian author, “The Island of Madagascar and the Spread of the Christian Faith in It” was published in St. Petersburg in 1873. Poetry played a special role in shaping the image of Madagascar in Russia. References to Madagascar can be found in the books by many famous Russian writers and poets, starting with Pushkin. Since the beginning of the 19th century Russian poets turn to the Malagasy theme often. It is mentioned by P. A. Pelskiy, K. Batiushkov and I. Dmitriev. This lyrical lure of Madagascar was continued in the poetry of N. Gumilev, K. Balmont, A. Tinyakov, F. Sologub, and K.Vaginov in the first two decades of the 20thcentury. To this day Madagascar often appears in Russian films, articles and books. The image of Madagascar in Russia throughout history has always had a flair of romance and mystery.

NEW ACQUISITION IN THE COLLECTION OF INDONESIAN PAINT-

ING

IN THE STATE MUSEUM OF ORIENTAL ARTS

In 2008 and 2014 the State Museum of Oriental Arts has received generous gifts from V.V. Sikorsky and N.N. Chevtaikina. This acquisition comprises 33 oil paintings of contemporary Indonesian artists of the 1950s – 1960s came from the private collection of the most popular and prestigious Indonesian artists, members of Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Painters) association. Its owner Harmain Rusdi moved to Moscow in 1965 and presented these artistic works to his Russian friends. This collection includes the canvases of such renowned artists as Djoko Pekik (b. 1938), A. Rustamadji (1932-1990), Basuki Resobowo (1916-1999), Misbah Tamrin (b. 1941), Rustamaji (1921-2001), Itji Tarmizi (1939-2001), Martian Sagara (b. 1939), Permadi Lyosta (b. 1932), Soerono (1914-2001) and others. The main themes of their works were independence struggle, everyday life of the common people, hardworking farmers and fishermen. After the failed alleged coup in 1965 many artists were arrested, became subjects to repression. Only in the 1980s – 1990s they have got an opportunity to continue their creative activity and to participate in various exhibitions. Now they are considered as forefathers of modern Indonesian art.
