SEASON

2023 2024 FEBRUARY/ MARCH

Preprint

WELCOME As I write this, I am in New York City for the annual Association of Performing Arts Professionals conference. Here, we talk to agents about booking next season and beyond, see artists perform, and hear about industry trends from colleagues across the county. Of course it’s also a time to experience the amazing offerings of the global cultural capital that is NYC. I hope you join me in the idea that we shouldn’t have to fly across the country just to experience great art. As this evening’s performance proves, you don’t have to. When the Utah Symphony visits us from just down I-15, it’s easy to take for granted our access to an ensemble of national renown and reputation. This evening I am headed to a club to see Luca Stricagnoli perform, just a couple weeks before he joins us at Peery’s Egyptian Theater for International Guitar Night. From where I sit right now, Lincoln Center is an eleven minute drive through big city traffic. I imagine many of you joining us for Jazz at Lincoln Center likely had a similar if not shorter commute to the performance. Lone Piñon’s performance at The Monarch will be an intimate and culturally resonant experience—a truly cosmopolitan evening right in Ogden, UT. Great communities deserve great performances, and Ogden has them through a coalition of donors, family foundations, government entities, and ticket buyers. Whatever role you played in making this and future performances possible, thank you. My time here in New York reminds me of just how good a thing we’ve got going in Ogden with performances set on a landscape of sage and snowy peaks rather than skyscrapers and steel. Thanks for proving concerts like tonight belong in both. James Fredrick Executive Director, Onstage Ogden 801-399-9214 / 3

ONSTAGE OGDEN

In 1949, Beverly Lund and Ginny Mathei decided they wanted to add even more culture to Weber County. So, for the small fee of $400, they brought the Utah Symphony to Ogden for a single performance. Three hundred people attended the concert. This 1949 concert was a big success, so the women decided to present even more concerts in Ogden. They organized a committee within the Welfare League (later the Junior League) to raise funds for the Symphony Concerts. Then, in 1957, this committee reformed and incorporated as the Ogden Guild. After a few more name changes and the addition of Ballet West performances in 1982, the organization became the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association. Under the direction of numerous board members and long-serving Executive Directors like Jean Pell (27 years), and Sharon Macfarlane (14 years), Onstage Ogden has expanded our programming to include internationally renowned classical dance, vocal, and chamber music. Since our inception, we have presented over 800 performances to tens of thousands of Utahns. In addition, Onstage Ogden actively works to engage and educate younger patrons. For example, our Youth Guild has provided generations of high school students with opportunities to serve. We also offer a variety of education classes, from Masterworks Music Detectives to Music and Dance Explorers. And we are partnering with several local community organizations to expand these programs to reach even more children and students. Onstage Ogden is proud to celebrate over 70 years sponsoring only the finest music and dance in the Greater Ogden area. We believe the arts have the power to inspire and uplift, and we are firmly committed to providing everyone in our community with greater access to the arts.

ARTISTS’ PROFILES Lone Piñon is a New Mexican string band, or “orquesta típica”, whose music celebrates the integrity and diversity of their region’s cultural roots. With fiddles, upright bass, guitars, accordions, vihuela, and bilingual vocals, they play a wide spectrum of the traditional music that is at home in New Mexico. In 2014, Lone Piñon was founded as a platform for creativity around the oldest sounds of traditional New Mexico string music, sounds that had all but disappeared from daily life in many Northern New Mexico communities. Through relationship with elders, study of field recordings, connections to parallel traditional music and dance revitalization movements in the US and Mexico, and hundreds of local and national performances, they have brought the

language of the New Mexico orquesta típica back onto the modern stage, back onto dance floors, into a contemporary aesthetic/artistic conversation, and into the ears of a young generation. The musical landscape of Northern New Mexico bears the record of interconnecting musical movements that cross state, national, generational, and ethnic borders. Lone Piñon’s active and recorded repertoire reflects that complexity, and has included a wide range of regionallyrelevant material (Western swing, conjunto, New Mexican Spanish and Mexican ranchera, Central Mexican son regional, country, onda chicana, etc.) around the core New Mexican violin and accordiondriven polkas, cunas, inditas, valses, and chotes learned from elders.

ARTISTS’ PROFILES SANTIAGO ROMERO (guitar, vihuela, vocals) grew up in the village of Agua Fria, New Mexico, on land where his family has lived for many generations. He began learning the guitar at the age of 6 from older musicians in his community and began working as a mariachi in Las Cruces, El Paso, and Ciudad Juárez in his early twenties. He has performed and served as creative

director in a variety of ensembles, taught as part of several educational initiatives and in 2005 was appointed by Governor Bill Richardson as the first New Mexico state representative of Mariachi music. In addition to his work with Lone Piñon he has served for 13 years as the director of Mariachi Sonidos del Monte, one of New Mexico’s premiere Mariachi ensembles.

JORDAN WAX (violin, piano- and three-row accordions, mandolin, guitar, vocals) grew up in Missouri and was traditionally trained by master Ozark fiddler Fred Stoneking and Central Missouri dance fiddler John White. He worked as bandleader and accordionist for a Yiddish dance band before his work with Missouri and New Mexican fiddle styles inspired him to travel to Mexico for a 6-month immersion in Mexican huapango fiddling, where he studied with Rolando “El Quecho” Hernandez of Trio Chicontepec, Casimiro Granillo of Trio Chicamole, and a variety of local fiddlers in the Huasteca region of San

Luis Potosí. His studies of traditional New Mexico dance music have been guided and inspired in the past years by Tomas Maes (mandolinist of Santa Fe, NM) and Antonia Apodaca (late accordionist and guitarist of Rociada, NM). In 2018 he travelled to Morelia, Michoacan for a few weeks of intensive study with master son calentano violinist Serafin Ibarra Cortez and P’urepecha elder and composer Tata Pedro Dimas. He serves the Manitos Community Memory Project as a Community Archivist digitizing and archiving New Mexico music-related documents, sound recordings, and oral histories.

KARINA WILSON (violin, viola, vocals) grew up in Glorieta, New Mexico, where she was surrounded from an early age with traditional music and dance. In addition to professionally performing and teaching classical violin and viola, her passion for traditional dance music and the roles it plays in cultural context has

taken her to 23 countries/territories to work with musicians from Alaska to the Ukraine and Iceland to Guinea. She is in high demand at dances and workshops across the US and at home teaches and performs honky-tonk, old-time, classical, international folk, and regional Mexican and New Mexican traditions.

OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE: DONOR ADVISED FUNDS Onstage Ogden gratefully accepting donations made through a DAF account, or Donor Advised Funds. It’s a great way to accomplish your philanthropic goals and easily manage your charitable giving. Giving through a DAF, which is like a charitable savings account, gives you the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to Onstage Ogden. You can recommend a grant or recurring grants now to make an immediate impact or use your fund as a tool for future charitable gifts. You can also create a lasting legacy by naming Onstage Ogden the beneficiary of the entire account or a percentage of the fund. With a percentage, you can create a family legacy of giving by naming your loved ones as your successor to continue recommending grants to charitable organizations. Contact your fund administrator for a beneficiary form.

Please contact Onstage Ogden Development Coordinator, Sarah Bailey, at 801.612.0757 or sarah@onstageogden.org, if you would like to make a donation or if your name has inadvertently been left off or is misspelled.
