About Ballet West
From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet.
Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 18 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 40 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 152,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year.
The Frederick Q. Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses - Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newlyrenovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.
With this eclectic and ever-expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in dance. By honoring the history and traditions of our great artform, while constantly moving forward with new and untried concepts, we continue to keep ballet in Utah and the world alive and thriving into the future.

From the Artistic Director
Welcome to Willam Christensen’s production of The Nutcracker.
The first ballet I ever went to was The Nutcracker In fact, for so many dancers, The Nutcracker was our introduction to the magic of ballet. It fired our imaginations and drove us to pursue a career in this fascinating, unique artform that combines athleticism, music, art, and theater. Whether it was the spectacle of the vibrant costumes, the dynamic power of a leap or turn, or the sheer beauty of the movement working harmoniously with the music, the magic of The Nutcracker took hold and inspired us.
Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, the version of The Nutcracker I saw was Lew Christensen’s. Lew was Ballet West founder Willam’s younger brother, who succeeded him at San Francisco Ballet in the early 1950s when “Mr. C” moved back to Utah to found first the University of Utah’s Ballet Department and then the Utah Civic Ballet, which grew into Ballet West.
The ballet filled me with wonder and joy and over the years I got to know it so well that I waited breathlessly for each section—whether it was the dancing dolls in scene one, the fierce battle with the mice, or all those exotic dances from around the world in Act Two. The experience of The Nutcracker, for me, was like opening many Christmas presents.
I became quite the aficionado by age seven and was always intrigued by the subtle changes that occurred in the choreography from year to year. I used to think that it was a secret only I was privy to. This was long before I realized that it was, of course, Lew’s prerogative as the choreographer. These changes were made for a multitude of reasons—a different dancer may have inspired him to try something new, or he may have chosen to highlight one aspect of the ensemble’s timing by changing the accent of a step. These changes are part of living theater. Every year a production like The Nutcracker evolves and grows. There is something different, but it is evergreen. Lew’s older brother Mr. C did the same, tweaking and adjusting his ballet based on the dancers he had at the time or an idea he wanted to bring forward.
The Christensen brothers’ version of The Nutcracker held many similarities. From what I have been told, these two brothers shared many ideas and went back and forth with their concepts all the time. This was one of the reasons I readily got the support of the Christensen family and Mr. C’s first Ballet Mistress – the late Bene Arnold, who guided and advised me through my first few years at BW. They liked the idea of me adding a man back to the Spanish divertissement (something Mr. C had done only when he felt he had strong enough male dancers to do so and something that hadn’t been done at BW in many decades when I arrived). They supported me interpolating Lew’s Chinese divertissement into Mr. C’s Act 2 (a proud Chinese warrior battling a dragon). Additionally, over the last 18 years of my tenure at BW, I have updated a few characters and their titles to help take Mr. C’s brilliant 1944 WWII era creation into the 21st century. I’d like to think it’s like adding a new ornament to a beloved traditional Christmas tree and bringing magic and joy to our audiences of all generations.
From the Artistic Director
The Christensens understood the magic and joy of The Nutcracker, and thanks to them and to George Balanchine, who unveiled his own iconic version in 1954 – ten years after Mr. C’s and around the same time as Lew’s, it is an international holiday favorite. Now, because of these visionaries, if we travel around the country and world, there are many great and unique takes on The Nutcracker that have become centerpieces of their individual community’s holiday season.
The Nutcracker is more than just a tradition. For many, the holidays wouldn’t be complete without it. Even though The Nutcracker first premiered in Russia in 1892, its longevity largely started in the United States and now has spread internationally. Not only does it bring in new audiences, but it also gives countless children performers their first experience on the stage, allowing us to give multiple performance opportunities for many different artists at different levels of the company. This makes the ballet vital in helping to foster growth and artistic development throughout our ranks.
I never grow tired of this fanciful ballet, which brings so much happiness to so many. I still remember what it was like as child to get all dressed up, go to a big fancy theater, and experience The Nutcracker magic. Every holiday season I never forget how blessed I am to live my life in this art I love so much, share it with you and hopefully bring you joy and inspire the next generations of dancers and ballet lovers.
Thank you for your patronage,
Happy Holidays,
Adam Sklute

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.
From the Executive Director
The landscape may not be white, but the arrival of The Nutcracker signals the holiday season is upon us. Ballet West’s production of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker is America’s first and oldest version of the holiday classic, dating back to its 1944 premiere on Christmas Eve in San Francisco. It has become an integral and indispensable part of American culture during the holidays, providing lasting memories and creating family traditions unlike any other holiday activity.
Utahns, in particular, love this tradition, evidenced by the incredible growth in Ballet West’s audience for The Nutcracker over the past decade or so. Revenue from The Nutcracker hit a company high last season at more than $3 million, more than double that of 2014. Many say the secret to Mr. C’s version is his emphasis on children and family. More than 300 children are featured in four casts during the run, many from the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy as well as from other dance and ballet academies across the Wasatch Front. This performing experience for these children is one that they will hold for many years to come.
Since coming to Utah eight years ago, I have come to appreciate how deeply Utahns love the arts. Imagine finding one of the nation’s largest and most highly regarded ballet companies in Salt Lake City, the metropolitan area population of which ranks near the bottom of the 50 largest in America. It is this passion for the arts that has fueled Ballet West’s growth, along with Ballet West’s deep commitment to staying artistically relevant and serving the entire state with its burgeoning outreach and education programs.
We have also you, our audience and our supporters, to thank for your generosity and loyalty. You give us the resources to bring beautiful productions such as The Nutcracker to the stage. You believe in what we do and place your trust in our company to deliver exceptional artistry, and we work hard to maintain that trust, season after season. Thank you for making Ballet West a priority in your lives!
From all of us at Ballet West, we send you our warmest wishes for a joyful and peaceful holiday season.
Warm regards,
Michael Scolamiero

Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Since that time, Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health, eliminating operating deficits and building a cash reserve. With a strong balance sheet, Ballet West no longer requires external financing to meet cash needs and is growing its endowment. Under his direction, Ballet West has purchased and operates residential housing in downtown Salt Lake City for students at the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy.

The Story
THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara—a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once.
That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure whether she is dreaming, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber.
After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and King.
Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is celebrated by dances from around the world, as well as the beloved Mother Buffoon with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. Finally, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her international magical kingdom.

Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy
The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy, the official school of Ballet West, is Utah’s premier source of dance training, providing the highest caliber of ballet instruction to professionally-bound students, as well as to those who simply wish to enjoy this beautiful and athletic art form. Academy students experience a structured curriculum offered in a nurturing, respectful, and positive environment, celebrating and exploring each student’s individual strengths and abilities.
The Ballet West Academy and its distinguished faculty is led by Evelyn Cisneros-Legate, an ever-growing and dynamic leader in the international field of dance. Pre-professional students are given the unique opportunity to be observed regularly and take classes with Ballet West Artistic Director Adam Sklute, and are considered for future positions with Ballet West. Avocational students build strength, coordination, and confidence through focused and joyous top-level dance education.
Classes begin at age three and are available at four locations: The Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre, Trolley Corners, Utah County, and Park City.

JARED OAKS
Music Director
Jared Oaks, one of the leading young ballet conductors in the United States, is Music Director of Ballet West. Since joining the company in 2008, Jared has maintained a rigorous conducting schedule, in addition to playing for rehearsals and classes. He has conducted performances for Houston Ballet and The Sarasota Ballet, and he has worked with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, among others.
Jared’s numerous compositions include an oratorio about Joan of Arc, with poems by Suzanne Lundquist, and chamber ballets for Ballet West, Charlotte Ballet, and Mid-Columbia Ballet. Jared is also a fellow of the American-Scandinavian Foundation and co-founder of the Composer Discovery Initiative.
AUBREY WOODS Concertmaster
Aubrey Woods’ rise as a professional violinist vividly demonstrates the versatility that is the sine qua non for twenty-first century musicians. Her artistic leadership and excellence as concertmaster for Ballet West are consistently on display at the Capitol, Rose Wagner, and Eccles theatres in Salt Lake City. She frequently performs with the Utah Symphony Orchestra. She appeared for several years with the Orchestra at Temple Square in weekly worldwide broadcasts and on recordings with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and notable soloists, including Bryn Terfel and Renée Fleming. Aubrey is equally in demand as a studio recording artist for movies, television, and in backing tracks for many popular artists.
Her performances as a chamber musician include appearances with NOVA, Intermezzo, the Park City Chamber Music Series and, on the Baroque violin, with New York Baroque Incorporated, the Sebastians, and Musica Angelica. She may often be heard in company with her husband, Alexander Woods, as the duo Woodsmith. In her free time, Aubrey loves making sourdough bread and spending time with her husband and their five kids.

Willam F. Christensen
Choreographer, The Nutcracker
Recognized as one of the leading pioneers in American dance, Willam Christensen, known affectionately as “Mr. C,” played a key role in the artistic contributions to Utah and to the United States. Along with brothers Lew and Harold, Willam began his career with dance lessons from his uncle at the Christensen Academy in Brigham City, Utah. Together, the brothers went on to a professional career in Vaudeville, and then in 1937, established the oldest ballet company in the United States, the San Francisco Ballet. While with the San Francisco Ballet, Mr. C choreographed the first full-length version of The Nutcracker ever performed in the United States. Christensen moved his family to Utah to nurse his wife’s ill health. In 1951, he founded the first ballet department at an American university, the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he formed the University Ballet Theatre, the first ballet company ever incorporated into a university.
Mr. C’s contributions to dance also include producing the first full-length version of Coppélia ever to be mounted by an American choreographer and producing the first fulllength Swan Lake in the United States. In addition, Mr. C produced the first American Cinderella and his version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird.
In 1963, Willam Christensen, in conjuction with Glenn Walker Wallace, founded Ballet West under the name Utah Civic Ballet. Willam served as Artistic Director for Ballet West, and, both under and following his direction, Ballet West has grown to become one of America’s leading ballet companies.
After retiring as Artistic Director in 1978, Mr. C founded the Christensen Academy and continued teaching well into his 90s. He served as special artistic advisor for Ballet West’s annual performances of The Nutcracker up until his death on October 14, 2001. Reporting on his death at the age of 99, the San Francisco Chronicle called him “the grandfather of American ballet.”
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Composer, The Nutcracker
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where George Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all Romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic, and grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, and concerti for various instruments, as well as operas and works for the piano. His creations for ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty.
