The Snail and the Whale

SATURDAY 28 September 1.30pm SUNDAY 29 September 10am & 1.30pm Q at Millfield Theatre

Sunday 29 September 7.30pm X at Dugdale Centre

Songs at the piano don’t get much sharper than this... HHHHH The Observer

This latest exciting collaboration with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, created in Tall Stories’ unique style, The Snail and the Whale combines physical storytelling, live music and lots of laughs.

‘How I long to sail,’ said the tiny snail… A tiny snail longs to see the world, so she hitches a lift on the tail of a huge humpback whale. Together they go on an amazing journey, experiencing sharks and penguins, icebergs and volcanoes. The little snail is amazed by it all, but starts feeling very small in the vastness of the world… Then disaster strikes - the whale becomes beached in a bay… Can the tiny snail save the day?

Stilgoe is that rare performer in the world of jazz - a complete entertainer. A wonderfully accomplished pianist and singer, he also writes songs that are highly original, often with the kind of witty, quirky lyrics you might expect from the son of Richard. As if that’s not enough, he also has a great stage presence and warm sense of humour. Stilgoe has an appeal that crosses boundaries and more than a hint of the star about him. Featuring Geoff Gascoyne Bass, Steve Taylor Drums

THE BLUES BAND

Wednesday 30 October 8pm

Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Tom McGuinness, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher

Q at Millfield Theatre

If music matures like fine wine, 1979 was a vintage year. That’s when Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness, from the hugely successful Manfred Mann, returned to their first love, the Blues. They imagined their ‘back to the roots’ project, The Blues Band, would simply earn some beer money. How wrong they were - the public were ready and waiting. Talent goes to talent. Into the ranks came slide guitar ace and superb vocalist Dave Kelly, legendary ex-John Mayall drummer Hughie Flint, (replaced in 1982 by the renowned Rob Townsend of Family), with solid bass provided by Gary Fletcher. The Blues Band’s new studio album, Few Short Lines amply demonstrates the veneration of their peers.

GYLES Brandreth

The Conformist

Sunday 10 November 5pm Q at Millfield Theatre

Tuesday 12 November 7.30 X at Dugdale Centre

LOOKING FOR HAPPINESS

The Conformist is 1930s Italian Marcello Clerici (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a coward who has spent his life accommodating others so that he can ‘belong’. Marcello agrees to kill a political refugee, on orders from the Fascist government, even though the victim-to-be is his college mentor.

When Gyles Brandreth set out to find the secret of ‘How to be Happy’ he started in Las Vegas and ended up in the psychiatrist’s chair. What he discovered about who gets to be happy and how, plus other useful lessons picked up along the way from Frank Sinatra, Frankie Howerd, and The Queen among others, provide the essence of a unique one-man show that should make you laugh and could change your life. Award-winning raconteur, Just A Minute regular and One Show reporter Gyles has recently appeared on QI, Countdown, The Matt Lucas Awards, Have I Got News For You, Countdown and Desert Island Discs.
