Diamond Dallas Page and Lex Luger: Real life tagteam partners, DDP opens up about Lex’s journey from the beginning to the 2025 WWE Hall of Fame
InterviewByYiorgo
On April 18th, 2025, Good Friday for Christians, amiraclehappenedonthestage of the 2025 WWE Hall of Fame involving the legendary Lex Luger and his friend and mentorDiamondDallasPage
Yiorgo: Here to take us through Lex’s journey is the legendary multi-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion Diamond Dallas Page also known as DDP Tell us Dallas, howdidyouandLexoriginallymeet?
Diamond Dallas Page: When I got to WCW,Lex’scareerhadskyrocketed.Hewas one of the top guys in the business And he and Sting were actually partners in a gym that they let all the boys work out at, called TheMainEvent.Andhewasvery very um... Hedidn’tgooutofhiswaytobenice buthe wasn’t rude either He was a bit of a primadonnabackthen,he’llbethefirsttotellyou that. Especially if you were down the card whereIwas.Youknow,Iwasamanager,so Imean, anyonethatwaslowerthanmewere guys who were getting beat. He was always politeandwegotalongokay, andthenasyou know, ittookmesixyearstogetonthewrestling side It was probably three and a half years that I spent on the managerial side But when I became a wrestler at 35 it took six years to finally make a dent where the peopleactuallycare, youknow.
Y: That begs the question, how do you makethepeoplecare?
DDP: I asked myself that question back thenaswell, becauseIwasn’treallyconnecting with the people And I started reading things that people were saying about me in magazines and one of them was Lex Luger who said, “Dallas was one of the hardest workingguysI’veeverseen.I’veneverseen anybody put that much time and effort into every bit of the business.” I realized that when Page Joseph Falkenberg, my real name, stopped trying to be Diamond Dallas Page and I started taking on the characteristics of Page Joseph Falkenberg, that and opportunity took me to the promised land. That’swhenitallstartedclicking Thatand the opportunity to work with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’tprobablybetalkingrightnow. And also, I never thought of Randy Savage steppingupandwantingtoworkwithmebuthe didbecauseofeverythingthatIhaddoneat thatpoint.Thatsodramaticallychangedmy life I mean, I can’t even explain it. It’s the reasonwhypeopletrustmewithDDPYoga.
Y:Whataresomeofyourearlymemories ofthosetimes?
DDP:SoonceIascendedtothatlevel,Lex and I over that period, just got tighter and tighterastimewenton.Anditwasn’treally until Steve (Sting) found Christ and Lex, I wouldn’tcallhimatheist, butatthetimehe wasprettyclosetoone Istarteddrivingwith Lex and the funny part was, Lex having to carrythatmuchmuscle Lexneededittobe very cold in the car, or he’d be sweating big time Well, it got to a point when we were ridingtogetherinthemiddleofthesummer, Iwouldhaveaparkeronandglovesbecause thecarwasfuckingfreezing Andthat’show Lex liked it, ‘cause he had all that muscle insulating his body, and he doesn’t have that today. That’s where we really bonded, ridingtogether tellingstories wereallygot to know each other and like each other At theshowsorTV,he’dcomeoutandgiveme the rub a couple times when my career was justfirsttakingoffandwebecamebuds, you know.
Y:YouweretherewhenLexhadhisspinal strokethatbrieflylefthimaquadriplegicand in a wheelchair ever since. Can you tell us aboutit?
DDP: The craziest part though is Eric Watts He is one of my best friends and he kind of stole my PWI Rookie of the Year Awards because there was nobody gonna get that but me that year Then Eric came in in October, started training and within a couple of matches he beat Arn Anderson. So Lex’s arrogance was pretty strong back then and, I don’t even think he was aware thathepissedEricWattsoff youknow? But Eric was waiting for Lex to fight him but the fight never happened and Eric hated Lex after wrestling. It is now 2007, I was livinginLAandImetEricfordinnersomewhere.Ericstartstellingmeaboutthenew LexLuger, thathe’sfoundJesusChrist. And I’m like, “No way.” Like, I get Sting, I get TedDebiase,IgetfreakingNikolaiVolkoff Nikita Igetit ButLex?Noway.Therewas anautographshowthattheywantedmeto do a session in. I don’t do many of them, I do some This was in San Francisco, there wasgonnabeatonofpeopleupthere And I didn’t wanna go just because it would be so many people. But Lex was on that show And now, Eric is telling me about it. I said, “You hate Lex.” He goes, “Not anymore.” I go “Wow.”hegoes “Welivetogether.”Igo “You, we with Lex Luger? At that point, I was like “Okay, I have to see this.” So the promoter knew, “Call me when Lex gets to his room ‘cause I wanna go by and see him.” And I just had to go by, I had to talk with that Lex Luger Promoter calls me up, “Lex, I think he had a heart attack or something TheEMTsareinhisroomright now, theyhadtokickthedoordown.”Iwas like, “What?” I run downstairs to his room and he’s sitting on a chair and the EMT is talkingtohim,it’saguyandagirl theEMT says, “Lex, you have to go to that hospital.” And I come running in the door and I, and Lex sees me and says, “Dallas, what are, what are you doing here?” I go, “I came to seeyou.Areyouokay?”Hegoes,“Yeah,I’m fine.” Like, “I’m fine.” Lex has no idea why he was completely paralyzed, everything but his pinky They had picked him up and put him in this chair I walked over to give him a hug and he didn’t move but I didn’t really think that he could be paralyzed. The EMT’s tried to throw up and go to thehospitalandhe’slike,“Nohospital.”Lex
hadliterallynothingatthatpointinhislife
‘Cause if I remember correctly he gave it all tohisex-wife,becausehefiguredhewasLex Luger, he could make it all up again Then everything that happened with Liz (Miss Elizabeth) and then everything that came withthedrunkdriving,DUIticketsheended up in jail and he, he just wanted to die He wasinthatspotwherewhateverChristasks metodo I’mgonnadoit. And,he’sjustfortunate to be alive and and he’s one of the one percenters because when you’re a quadriplegic, theytoldhim,“You’renotgonnahave anythingbutbeabletoturnyourheadfrom left to right and little bit of shoulder movement.” That’s what they told him. I tried to convince him to go to the hospital, he was like,“Areyousure,Dallas?Myhipsarereally bad,Ican’tstandup.”Igo “Noproblem, bro, Igotyou. SomeandtheEMTstookhimout, put him in the gurney and off he went and I didn’t realize he was a quadriplegic ‘til we gotbacktoAtlantaanditwasatSpinalShepherdInstitute Me and my DDP Yoga business partner, Steve Yu, would go see him at the Institute When Lex finally checked out of Shepherd Institute hecouldwalkwithawalker Later on,wewenttoseehimandhewasbackinthe chair again. I’m like, “What happened, you wereoutofthechair.”Andhesaidthathegot cockyandhestoppeddoingstuff Itoldhim thatIcouldteachhimDDPYogastuffusing a chair I had not developed all the rebuild stuff, sowewerehavinghimstartsittingina chair, gettingupwhenyou’redown.Ididn’t develop any of that stuff yet. All we had was bed flaps and stuff like in bed But that helped him get a little stronger and strongerandthentheyredidhiships Lexhadthe hips already taken care of, but he couldn’t afford‘em.Butthechurchraisedthemoney sothathecouldgethishipsdone. And,dude this is a quadriplegic and he’d already been raisingthemoney, andIdon’tknowhowhe did it, but he got those doctors to operate on him and give him new hips even though he was paralyzed. Lex’s psychology was, “I couldn’t walk before I was paralyzed. How amIevergonnabeabletowalkifIdon’thave betterhips?”Thatwouldbeanothermiracle. Lex and I would see each other on and off over the last 12 years Not this last year, but the years before that, on and off again and I was like, Bro, I got an elevator in my house “Come on back, bro. We can work on this.” AndIdon’tthinkhereallybelievedit.
Y: What finally convinced him to let you helphimout?
DDP: He saw the Butterbean video and what he was able to accomplish, and that did it for him. So it is now March 3rd, 2024 andStinger, whohadbeenworkingforAEW, is having his last match. Sting reached out to a small handful of close friends: me, Lex, and Nikita. Sting was very important in my career aswell,soIwenttosupporthim Lex and I talked while we were there together and he agreed to come over and let me help him.
Y: With Lex living with you and your beautiful wife Page, how did you decide on whatworkoutstodo?
DDP: I looked at what Lex could do and stayed away from what he couldn’t do and as we went on he got better and better. So everyworkoutthatIdidwithhimwasliterally for him. I also filmed every one of Lex’s workouts There are so many people who are in wheelchairs that aren’t paralyzed. Theycandoanyoneofthoseworkoutsthat Lex can do Eventually all of Lex’s workout videos will be on the app and it will be the LexLugerSeries Y: How did the moment happen where WWEWorldChampionCodyRhodes came toyourhouseandsurprisedLex?
DDP: Actually that was all WWE. The funniest part to me, I thought for sure, Lex knew ThewholethingwaswhywouldCody be there? Well, Cody has been to my house dozens of times There’s a bunch of footage of us together And Lex thought Cody was coming in to just shoot some more footage withme Sohedidn’treallythinkanythingof it.ButCodywalkedinandsaid,“I’mhereto letyouknowthatWWEwantstoputyouin the Hall of Fame.” So it got him really good, itwasactuallyperfect.
Y: Now let’s talk about the Hall of Fame nightthisyearwhereyouinductedLexand Lexwasabletostandupandwalk?
DDP: The people were blown away by Lex just standing up and walking those last coupleoffeettothepodium.Itwasamiracle Whatmostpeopledon’tknowandwhatwas going to happen, was that Lex was gonna pushhimselfup, onthehandrails, lookatme, whisper in my ear and sit back down.
