Another year has come to an end, the leaves are changing colour and the clocks have changed! Time really has flown these last few months. This is the last issue of MAC News for this year and is full of reports from various areas of the club, which are largely run by club volunteers. Today, as I write this we learned of the passing of Mike Hall, our thoughts are with Will and his family at this time. Improvements are already underway, taking advantage of the good weather, we have got stuck into the Orchard, Church Drive and the Members’ Enclosure. Details on what we have done can be found further in this issue. We are also preparing for our last visit of the year as we hold one of the stages for the RAC Rally Of The Tests. A report and pictures will follow in the next issue. As usual it is time to renew your membership, enclosed are the relevant forms and we would urge you to help the club save money and set up your renewal by Direct Debit. I hope you have enjoyed the season, many have said: “how will you top this year?”. Not sure we will top it but we will certainly try our best to match it. Thank you to everyone for your help this year and also to all the photographers who supply us with images for use in the MAC News and in our other marketing materials. Please note the office will be closed during the Christmas and New Year period, with some staff members also taking their remaining holiday. From us all in the office, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mike Hall By John Moody

As we went to press we heard of the sad demise of Mike Hall, long standing MAC Member and competitor. A full obituary will follow in the next MAC News.

Changes to the Office After a very successful season the board of directors have made some changes to the way the MAC operates. Mark Constanduros will now be concentrating solely on commercial matters as we look to build on the successes of the last few years. Robin Webb will be managing the office and other non-commercial matters alongside his role as Competition Secretary. Office hours will change during the winter from November to end of February with the office being closed on Fridays.

The Orchard

After the great success of the orchard for additional parking this year we took the decision to invest in the Orchard. We got underway early as the weather was good, starting with improvements to the drainage with a ditch at the foot of the bank and some drains between the trees to a big sump in the bottom corner of the field. We have also put in a roadway linking the middle gate into the Orchard from the road up top the gate opposite the Paddock. This will be part of a new traffic management system from next year. 3

Members’ Enclosure

A big thank you to the Dibnahs who have erected a new fence around the Members’’ Enclosure at ‘Ess Approach’. This will now give more control over those visiting and add to the exclusivity of this area. We also hope to add a few more seats on the grass bank in due course.

Church Drive Resurfacing Another project that is underway right now is the resurfacing of Church Drive from the main gate to the first set of double gates into the lower paddock. This will give one continuous surface taking out the bumps and the pot holes, much to everyone’s relief. Whilst we are at it, a couple of ducts are being installed for communications.

Cycle Hill Climb Photos. Toby Moody and Callum Hibbert

October saw us host the Shelsley Walsh Cycle Hill Climb for the third time. This event is becoming very popular with competitors and clubs which enabled us to add a round of the Cyclo X Championship in the car park field, whilst the hill climbers used the track. Some even went on to compete in the Cyclo X afterwards! A 2km course was marked out with 450 competitors of all ages taking part throughout the day. Both events ran side by side providing a great event which saw lots of spectators coming to watch. If you are a big cyclist why not come and take part next year.

PETER JAMES INSURANCE COMPETITION

The winner will be informed of their good fortune on Christmas Day, bagging themselves an extra-special Christmas gift of up to ÂŁ350 of F motor insurance for up to 25 years.

Competition Secretary’s Report By Robin Webb

Richard Hollingworth. Credit. Ian Dowding

Just one event to report on since the last MAC News and once again we were blessed with fine weather and a full programme of sprinting at our ‘season ender’ at Curborough on the figure of 8 course on 9th October. I have previously confessed to enjoying this low key event which sees everybody involved in an end-of-term spirit and especially the Ferrari Owners Club who also finish their season on this same day.

And following this last round, we can now announce 1st, 2nd and 3rd in our very own Sunrise Sprint Championship in this, its inaugural year. From the very beginning, Richard Hollingworth looked a likely contender and although we never saw the promised Formula Renault, we most certainly did see him in his very rapid DJ Firehawk. Sadly, the car expired during the afternoon and Richard was unable to post any times. On the plus side he had already bagged enough points to keep his lead and become our very first (and worthy) champion. Well done Richard and hope to see you next year in the new car. Second place in the championship went to John Palmer in his Westfield SE which was codriven by our very own David Nursey who managed to take an equally deserved 3rd place. And now with the season behind us we are fully immersed in planning the 2017 season. The calendar is set and there are some changes. Competitive hill climb weekends have now increased to seven with the VSCC becoming a two-day affair and with the Reg Phillips Trophy meeting moving to its own Sunday in June. We have also taken the opportunity of having an “Open Test Day” which is slightly experimental on our part but is as a result of many enquiries during the last year and gives competitors a chance to fine tune their cars without the pressure of it being a competitive day. This will take place on the 3rd Saturday of June, the day before the Reg Phillips day. And finally, the annual awards date has been agreed by the committee for Saturday 7th January 2017. This is a welcome time for such an event as the longer winter nights are at their peak and things can be bit quiet after the Christmas/New Year celebrations. The Format has changed and becomes a canapé and prosecco reception at the magnificent Stanbrook Abbey and is followed by the optional President’s Dinner. Everybody is welcome, however the formal dinner after the reception will be restricted to the first ninety guests that reserve their places. 11

Report from the Prodrive Visit By Chris Burgess

Twenty MAC members and guests enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the new Prodrive facility in Banbury. Led by the inimitable Jackie Irwin, or ‘Jackie Prodrive’ as she is known to many. The tour started in reception amongst three true stars of the Prodrive fleet, the 2007 Le Mans class winning DBR9, one of Colin McCrae’s early WRC Subaru Imprezza’s and a more recent WRC MINI Countryman of Dani Sordo, which certainly topped the self-serve coffee machine and piles of corporate literature one normally expects to find in such an environment. The tour progressed into the factory proper, first stop heritage collection, with an array of cars that chart the breadth and depth of Prodrive’s long association with motorsport in its many guises. The oldest car in the collection was the 1984 Porsche 911 SC RS Group B car resplendent in the blue and white Rothmans livery more readily associated with the Group C Porsche 956 and 962’s that were so dominant in sports car racing in the same era. Naturally, the collection contains other greats of rally folklore such as the Bastos BMW M3, original McCrae Subaru Legacy and the Metro 6R4 that recently delighted the crowds at Shelsley Walsh during Classic Nostalgia. However many were surprised to find two stalwarts of the mid-90’s Super Touring era the Honda Accord and Ford Mondeo and even the BAR Honda F1 car in which David Richards and Prodrive had significant involvement. Standing by the Heritage cars we were treated to a view across the factory floor and a great many Aston Martin racing cars hailing from a variety of series, but before that our next destination was the parts department. Not the most scintillating place you would think, but at Prodrive naturally it was a treasure trove of components each with their own story and our guide knew each one, regaling us with the details on everything from seat fittings to the mind boggling cost of even tiny components. We progressed into the chassis build area with a variety of cars both in initial build and in for repair, with everything from brand new Aston Martin GT3 cars to a heavily crashed MINI Countryman getting the Prodrive treatment. Working our way through the components workshop we arrived back to the main factory floor and the electrical components area where a vast array of wiring looms were under construction covering everything from the racing car systems you would expect to Ben Ainslie’s America’s cup yacht, which most certainly did not. The remainder of the tour took in the Advanced Engineering part of the business, which works under contract for a variety of global businesses both inside and outside of the automotive industry and ended up back amongst the rows of Aston Martin GT cars waiting for their next engagement. This just left us time to wander amongst these beautiful machines pondering if it was an ex Le Man DBR9, an N24 spec Zagato or a more workmanlike GT4 V8 Vantage we would most like to take home with us. For details on other MAC Social events, consult the events section of the website and ensure you are signed up to receive emails. 13

Correspondance That’s it – the season’s over, so a big thank you to everyone, all the way up from the office staff with Robin making me tea in the morning, to the ladies in the shop. We have had a lot of highs, a few lows, but most of all a great big thank you to all my marshals. They make my job so much easier, good friends and colleagues; and even thanks to those dreaded clerks! Thanks to Doctor Chris and our 365 guys in the medical team. For those who don’t know 365 Medical Services UK in the ambulance, they are the white angels. We will get their overalls dirty one day! Thanks also to the competitors, without whom nothing would happen! So once again many, many thanks and look forward to 2017. From Mick Robbins MAC member Terry Wright’s critically acclaimed book ‘Power Without Glory’ about JAP Vtwin engined Cooper cars received an Award of Distiction as an ‘exemplary book’ at the Society of Automotive Historians recent meeting at Hershey, Pennsylvania in October. Subtitled ‘Racing the Big-Twin Cooper’, the book has been widely praised for its new look at the origins of the modern racing car and was ‘Book of the Month’ in Octane magazine earlier this year. It is shortlisted for ‘Publication of the Year’ in the 2016 International Historic Motoring Awards. There is, of course, plenty of Shelsley Walsh history in its 342 pages with more than 300 illustrations. Terry says there are only about forty copies left in store and that he expects them all to be sold as Christmas presents. Yours can be bought online at www.loosefillings.com or from Chaters, Simon Lewis, Automoto and Brooklands Museum. From Terry Wright Now that the cars are either snuggled down or in bits on the garage floor and the racing overalls are at the cleaners to be forgotten until next year – I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone at Shelsley. The season has once again been tremendous fun and it’s down to Gill, Rachel, Robin and Mark in the office for all their hard work, Andy and his helpers for keeping the hill and surrounding areas so immaculate and of course, most importantly, the marshals. Unfortunately withdrawal symptoms have already begun – can’t wait until next season. From Briony Serrell Brian Bowater, a long-standing Shelsley Marshal died, whilst on holiday in Ireland, on 15th September. He was, surprisingly, seventy-seven, but always looked much younger. Brian had spectated at Shelsley for over fifty years but I first met him, when as a VSCC volunteer marshal, he joined me in the Finish Paddock in the early 1980’s. He too at that time had a young son and both our boys helped out in the Finish Paddock where much pushing was necessary at every batch change. As, over the course of time, I gravitated to Course Control at the foot of the hill so Brian too gravitated to Bottom Ess as part of the Course Control team where for many years he has shared the duties of hill clearance, necessary to indicate that it is safe to release another competitor from the start line. It has been a great pleasure to me to work with Brian at Shelsley for more than thirty years but what was always particularly pleasurable were the chats, usually about vintage cars, that we enjoyed early in the day before we went to our allotted tasks. Photo Finish By Geoff Herrington

The late decision of the Classic Section committee to organise a local run was entirely justified by the entry of more than forty cars. Meeting at the Halfpenny Green Vineyard for a tasty bacon/ sausage roll the restaurant was soon abuzz with the enthusiastic chatter of the participants and within a short time the early starters were flagged away on the fifty-three mile route which would end with at Shugborough Hall. Unbeknown to the committee at the time the tour Shugborough Hall was arranged, the destination was due to revert to the National Trust at the end of September. When the final arrangements were to be discussed with the staff of Shugborough it was discovered that they had all been replaced! Even the best laid plans... Winding through narrow roads (which must have been quite a challenge for the Tunney family in their magnificent Jaguar Mk1X) the route explored villages and small townships in the area of Cannock Chase, before taking a circuitous tour of the woodlands of the area. To many (myself included) this was a relatively unexplored part of the Midlands and there were some pretty impressive views on offer. The delays between the despatching of each car at the start meant that for many entrants the tour was completed without travelling in convoy, forcing the driver to rely upon the navigator’s reading of the very comprehensive Tulip Rally style printed route. With that my ‘trip’ was accurate! Thanks to the torrential rain of the previous evening those with low slung vehicles were obliged to exercise care in negotiating some of the country lanes which harboured several inches of flood water in some areas. Most entrants completed the tour without encountering rain, although Jerry Targett was apparently targeted by the weather gods and his MG 18/80 and wife Miriam received a soaking! Privileged parking at Shugborough allowed the cars to be shown off at their best and many visitors to the Hall drifted over for a closer look and a chat. Incidentally, the rain which had been promised arrived in the form of a torrential down-pour at precisely 3.00pm, catching several members whilst exploring the gardens. Those for whom the inner man is the priority had already ensconced themselves within the restaurant and remained dry! 27

Social Scene By Gill Dayson

Since the last News, the Social Scene has been a bit quieter, while we breathe deeply after the end of the racing season. The Norton Motorcycle Factory Tour is sold out, and the Williams Martini Racing Factory Tour was full within a couple of hours of the lines opening. An Evening with R4D There are still places available for Mac Hulbert’s fascinating talk, entitled “An Evening with R4D”. This is on 19th November in the Stratstone Restaurant, and includes a ploughmans’ supper. The bar will also be open. Please contact Gill Dayson in the office for tickets. Tickets cost £15 for MAC Members and £20 for non-members. Your social Committee has a forthcoming meeting and would love to hear from anyone who has ideas of social events and outings they would like to see on the calendar, or even get involved with organisation. Plans for the winter include a quiz night, a film show and/or a skittles evening.

Twenty-one cars signed up with a waiting list of more. On Saturday 13th August we joined the pre-trip meeting at Shelsley, old friends and regulars swapped news and new participants were welcomed, Gail briefed us and handed over our trip guide books, anticipation and excitement started to build! My MGB will be fifty years old next year, not the oldest on this trip, but ‘getting on a bit’ so earlier this year I replaced the original back axle which has been groaning and whining for many miles, lots of ‘under the bonnet preparations’ and a new petrol pump were fitted, and she was ready for the ‘off’ early on Wednesday 7th September to drive down to Portsmouth. Portsmouth Ferry terminal car park on a warm September evening made a good MAC meeting place, causing some entertainment for others in the long wait to board Bretagne! There were a couple of beautiful very early Bugatti’s ahead of us, probably heading for Angouleme. Thursday 8th September We reached St Malo in a minor heat wave, hoods were down and those with air conditioning were fortunate as we headed south to Fontevraud l’Abbaye and our hotel, Hostellerie La Croix Blanche in Place Plantagenets. That evening, as we gathered in the hotel courtyard for pre dinner drinks there were tales of unexpected scenic side excursions, particularly around the city of Angers, but anticipation of four days of exploring the western Loire was overriding everything else. We enjoyed a glass of fizz kindly provided by Ken and Sue Taylor who unfortunately were unable to be with us'. Friday 9th September For some it was a day of R&R and exploring around Fontevraud and it’s famous Abbey, where Eleanor of Aquitaine who married King Henry II are both buried. We found an excellent little restaurant in the town square for a long and delicious lunch. Later in the afternoon a good number of MAC members returned from their interesting tour of the Cointreau distillery at Angers, passengers seemed a little unsteady! Later, dinner was served under the stars. Saturday 10th September Seven cars headed to The French National Riding School near Saumur. Others drove to Chinon, where the fortress dates from the 12th and 13th C, and stands up on a hill next to the old town and is now a museum. King Henry made it his continental HQ when 31

Britain ruled much of France. Excellent lunch in the town square, MAC members were dotted around the tables enjoying the surroundings. We drove on through pretty little villages to the confluence of the great Loire and Vienne rivers at Candes-St Martin, where we stopped for a drink in a sleepy square outside the church of St Martin. Suddenly the bells rang out and a wedding party emerged from the church, the little road through Candes quickly became completely jammed with excitable guests and the bridal cars. Sunday 11th September Market day at Montsoreau just 6km away, we left promptly and looked round the market stalls perched along the banks of the Loire. On to the nearest Troglodyte caves and mushroom restaurant, which was fully booked with members from the Porsche Club of France, an impressive line up of 911’s! That evening at dinner, there was a brief rumour doing the rounds of MAC members to suggest a change of MAC Club name to Mazda Automobile Club due to the increasing number of members buying MX5’s! Everyone was enchanted by the peaceful, warm surroundings of the town square after dinner. Monday 12th September The big breakfast debate was whether to drive to Chateaux Villandry, some said it might be covered in scaffolding, eventually a body of opinion agreed to go. We have been before so opted for a tour of the pretty villages around Saumur, we drove for miles through the vineyards, the weather became even warmer during the day, the Kenlow fan worked overtime on the B’s engine! Tuesday 13th September – Departure Day Several members were driving on to other parts of France including La Rochelle and Angouleme for the Circuit Des Ramparts racing, while the rest of us packed and prepared our cars for the day’s drive back to St Malo. Gail and Tony managed to arrange for some of the older classics to be photographed in the square before we set off. We had an excellent drive north taking the quicker route, but drove through the first proper rain of the week, hoods briefly up approaching St Malo. In the line up for the ferry we had another impromptu MAC gathering and met several MG Owners Club drivers also. The crossing was smooth and on disembarking we were thrust immediately onto the awful M275 at rush hour, it must be very challenging for French drivers! A great trip, good company, fine French countryside, smooth roads, happy memories and photos. Many thanks to Gail and Tony – here’s to the next trip – hopefully the Picos Mountains of Spain next year? But before that, a good clean for the car before the Photo Finish run on Sunday 25th September. See you there! 33

Curborough Report By Robin Webb. Photos. Ian Dowding Track Action Photography

What a beautiful Autumn day it was at Curborough for the last competitive event of the season held by the Club. It was a full entry with ‘Best Time of Day” going to Gary Thomas in Class J1 & J2 combined in his Force PC in a time of 53.08s. The ‘figure of 8’ track configuration is a real test and one or two managed to take wrong turns during their morning practice runs. The Honda S2000’s took first and second in ‘Class A2(a)/A2(b) ably driven by Michael Thomson and Raymond Worrall with the very nippy Fiat X19 of late entrant Jonathan Plowe taking 3rd. Class wins also went to Chris Berrisford in his Subaru Impreza (A3a), Graham Godfrey, Audi TT (A3b), John Palmer (B1 /B2), David Bickley (C2 & D). Matt Carter managed just one run but still took the top spot in F/G Class in his Radical. Simon Andrews took best time by an MAC member in his OMS 28 and also won his class. It was good to see the Ralt F302 of John Chalmers on track and the Triumph TR5 of Rod Stansfield who managed a small ‘off’ just after the finish line, with Bruce Atkinson taking top honours in that class in his Alfa GT Junior. Fourteen Ferraris turned out for their last event of the season and Richard Prior (who turned up late having chosen to watch the end of the Japanese Grand Prix!) then put in the fastest time in his Ferrari 355 GTB. A great day of competition run in glorious weather and a suitable conclusion to our 2016 season.
