We offer traditional classroom and online classes as well as certificate programs to meet your individual learning needs.

Do you need your CDL? This course is designed to provide material relevant to obtaining your Commercial Driver’s Permit and covers topics from general knowledge to air brakes and combination vehicles. Our goal is to prepare students to successfully complete the CLP testing.

ONE-ON-ONE COMPUTER TRAINING

This learning opportunity is designed for the person who wants one-on-one attention, giving personalized attention on the computer topic that meets your specific need. Class takes place in one of our training rooms. You may use your own laptop, or one provided by the college, depending upon needs. Call 345-8122 to visit with someone about one-on-one computer training. Cost is determined by number of hours and type of training.

FORKLIFT-SCISSOR LIFT-TELEHANDLER TRAINING

Available upon request. Call to set up a class instructed by BJ Schellenberg, Common Sense Safety. Each year, thousands of injuries related to forklift and warehouse equipment accidents occur in the U.S. Unfortunately, most employee injuries and property damage can be attributed to lack of safe operating procedures, lack of safety-rule enforcement and insufficient or inadequate training. As it is a violation of federal law for anyone UNDER 18 years of age to operate a forklift or for anyone OVER 18 years of age who is not properly trained to do so, this class will OSHA train and qualify students to legally operate a forklift, scissor lift, telehandler and skid steer. A certificate of completion will be offered upon conclusion of the class. Customized training upon request.

SOURDOUGH CLASS

This class will teach you about sourdough origin, the benefits of sourdough, terminology used when making sourdough, tips and tricks and recipes. The instructor will demonstrate how to feed the starter, mix the dough, shape a loaf and score a loaf. The registration fee will include an active starter and a blade for scoring. Bring a pint jar with a lid to take home the starter and a spoon or spatula that is long and skinny enough to reach the bottom of the jar for stirring.

ART WORKSHOP: HAND-BUILDING WITH CLAY

Craft your very own custom felt hat! Using feathers, ribbons, fabrics and leather, participants will make unique and hand-painted or hand-burned hats. The basic hat is included in the price and supplies will be provided for each participant to use up to five items to decorate their creation. If additional items are desired, hat-makers may purchase more items or bring their own special additions. This class will be co-led by Valentine native Sherri Hartman Stokey and the Executive Director of North Platte’s Prairie Arts Center, Holly Carlini.

SPIKE LEGO PROGRAMMING

Students will learn about all the sensors, motors and light matrix of the Spike Lego. After a thorough examination of these components, students will build a break dancer, a delivery cart and a tabletop game using all the elements of the Spike Lego environment.

DRIVER’S EDUCATION

Call to be put on the wait list for the next class Driver’s Education teaches teens the basic traffic laws, driver awareness, rules of the road and basic motor vehicle operation. This class consists of 20 classroom hours and five hours of drive time. Driving session will be separate from class time. Students must be 14, attend all sessions, have a learner’s permit before class begins, and meet all drive requirements in order to obtain the Drive Test Waiver. The Nebraska DMV reserves the right to test anyone at any time. A book will be provided. (Call 308-345-8122 to be put on the wait list.)

EMERGENCY SERVICES

HEARTSAVER CPR, FIRST AID & AED

Classes are offered every other month. Call for more information or to be put on the waitlist | $70

Learn the hands-on approach to emergency, focusing on the skills needed for a first responder. Class includes CPR/AED, first aid for choking (including pediatric emergency first response) and how to manage illness and injuries before help arrives. American Heart Association Certificate is provided upon successful completion of this course. Class will include pediatric instruction for childcare providers.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT PROVIDER (CPR)

Classes are offered every other month. Call for more information or to be put on the waitlist | $70

Basic Life Support Provider course is designed to teach CPR skills to aid victims of all ages. The use of AED, ventilation with barrier devices and relief of foreign body airway obstructions are taught. This course is relevant for those who provide care to patients in both the hospital and pre-hospital environments. Completion leads to a certification card that is valid for two years.

RESPONSIBLE ALCOHOL SERVER TRAINING

In an effort to deter substance abuse and to make sure alcohol does not end up in the wrong hands, Community Connections and the North Platte Police Department have teamed up to educate those who sell and serve alcohol. Preregistration is not necessary.

This class is for utility personnel from communities in Nebraska striving to pass the Grade IV Water Operator examination for which the license is issued through Nebraska DEE.

In order to gain maximum benefit from this course, it is important for participants to review materials and complete the pretests in the student manual prior to attending the course.

The Trauma Nursing Core course is a two-day course designed by the Emergency Nurses Association for RNs. It is designed to provide the learner with basic trauma knowledge & psychomotor skills. LPNs, Respiratory Care & Paramedics may attend for CEU’s but will not receive a course completion card or take part in testing. Completion leads to a certification card that is valid for four years. It is required that you review your student manual and complete the eight interactive online modules. Modules must be complete prior to the first day of class or you will not be allowed to proceed. You must bring your student manual to class.

ADVANCED CARDIOVASCULAR LIFE SUPPORT (ACLS) PROVIDER

Students will learn and practice a set of clinical guidelines for the urgent and emergent treatment of life-threatening cardiovascular conditions that will cause or have caused cardiac arrest, using advanced medical procedures, medications and techniques.

These two sessions will help kids see the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. The benefits of exercise and healthy food choices will be covered over two nights. Students will leave Jan. 30th class with a healthy foods charcuterie board made by them. All supplies included.

STAINED GLASS II

Learn how to create a landscape design in a circular pattern and customize your design and colors.

This is a step-two class with harder cuts and soldering. Must have taken a Level I class or have prior experience. All supplies included. 18 years or older. You are working with glass and a hot soldering iron-you will be required to wear safety gear. PAC basement level, pre-registration is required for this class.

16+ TECHNIQUES OF ACRYLIC FLUID ART (POURING)

Learn 16+ techniques of acrylic fluid art! You have seen this abstract form of art on social media-learn how to get the cells to pop! It is not as messy as it sounds but do wear painting clothes to class. Watch a demonstration of each technique and then it is your turn to have some fun. All supplies are provided but you will need to bring cardboard in to transport your two coaster size blanks and a larger size blank home.

DOUBLE STAR STENCIL OR GEOMETRIC OUTDOOR BARN QUILT

Feb 21 | 1-4 pm | McDonald-Belton 131| Rose Mapel | $75

Paint an outdoor barn quilt that will last. It can be used indoors as well. ACM only-wood is not used. You have your choice of doing a barn quilt with the double star stencil design or do a geometric design from the pattern board at class. Many design and color options the day of class.

If you choose to do the stencil option, you will be provided with the double star stencil that you can keep and use on future barn quilts. The stencil will be used to mark your barn quilt. You will learn how to center it and use barn quilt stencils. Once you draw the design it is ready for you to mark colors and tape. Use this stencil over and over again for future barn quilts, quilts or projects!

If you choose to do the geometric option, you can choose from a pattern board that has 48 design options. Options range from traditional and simple to complex. You will learn how to dissect a pattern and transfer it to the barn quilt blank.

You will need to bring yellow Delicate Frogtape (1.41 width is best-it can be purchased at a hardware store), hair dryer and a heavy-duty extension cord.

INTRODUCTION TO TRUCK DRIVING SIMULATOR

CDL Instructors will give a brief overview of truck driving careers and skills needed to be a truck driver. Students will have an opportunity to use our state-of-the-art truck driving simulator.

ENTRY LEVEL DRIVER TRAINING (ELDT)

Instruction focuses on fundamental basics needed to become a professional driver. Topics range from basic vehicle operation to whistle blower protections. Labs are hands-on training for the driver enabling them to conduct a proper pre-trip, enroute and post trip (DVIR) inspections, proper hooking and unhooking procedures, sliding of tandems and fifth wheels. Behind-the-wheel training is just that. Driver trainees will learn how to maneuver a tractor-trailer around tight corners, make proper lane changes and drive in traffic. They also will learn and become proficient in backing and docking.

At the end of this training, Central States Safety and Driver Training will administer the necessary CDL Skills tests for the driver trainee to get their CDL License. Must register by phone 308-535-3687

HAZARDOUS MATERIAL ENDORSEMENT DRIVER TRAINING

This is an Entry Level Driver Training approved theory course. A theory course must be completed before taking the HAZMAT endorsement class. The course covers rule, regulations and safety practices when hauling hazardous materials. Instructor Will Cleveland has 17 years of law enforcement experience.

A book will be provided for this class.

DRIVER’S EDUCATION

The Driver Education is an essential first step to learning safe, lifelong driving skills. Driver’s Education teaches teens basic traffic laws, driver awareness, rules of the road and basic motor vehicle operation. This course consists of 20 hours of classroom time and 5 hours of driving time as required by the Nebraska DMV. The class prepares drivers for licensure by awarding a Drive Test Waiver upon satisfactory completion. Minimum student age is 14. This class is intended for entry level drivers ages 14-17. Students must attend all sessions, have a learner’s permit before class begins, and meet all drive requirements in order to obtain the Drive Test Waiver. INDIGO DYE SHIBORI

Jump into the traditional Japanese art form of Shibori. Learn how to fold, bind and stitch fabrics and vat dye using a plant based indigo dye to create a rich and stunning blue design. You will be provided with approximately three towels to bind and dye using different methods.

Whether it’s your first date, a special night with your forever date or a fun outing with a friend, this class promises love and laughter for you both! Learn how to check the fluids, the importance of checking the tires and the wear pattern, understand your vehicle systems and all the proper maintenance intervals. Would you like to know more about your DNA results and how you can put them to use in your genealogy research? It would be awesome if there was an “Easy Button” that you could push, and all of your DNA matches would fall right into place on your family tree! We’re not there, yet, but getting closer every year. Come learn the basics of using your DNA results for expanding your family tree. We’ll explore some practical ways and new tools that you can add to your genealogy toolkit. Following class, each participant is invited to schedule an individualized zoom session with the presenter to develop a research plan for using your own DNA results.
