New pedestrian crossing proposed at busv shopping park After receiving a number of safety concerns about the crossing between Asda and the shopping centre, Cllr.

Brenda Seaton, requested that Leicestershire County Council consider a formal crossing.

The single lane (bypass bound) widens in the last 30+ metres before the small roundabout encouraging traffic to separate depending on their direction of travel, left to the retail park, straight on, or right to Asda.

Pedestrians travelling between the two areas are directed to cross at a 'designed in' crossing point but the traffic is not controlled and therefore under no obligation to stop for persons waiting to cross.

Many motorists are courteous and will stop to let pedestrians cross but vehicles in

Proposed erection of 5G mobile phone mast in Thurmaston A planning application (P/21/0368/2) has been submitted with Charnwood Borough Council for the erection of a 20m (66ft) mobile phone mast and nine associated service cabinets at Hadrian Road and Garden Street.

It is proposed that the mast will be positioned on the path to the rear of the Working Men's Club with nine service cabinets.

The Parish Council have objected strongly to this application which can be viewed online (see page 11 ). Concerns include the visual impact on the village green and the possibility of graffiti given the vicinity to the park, it is close to

the other lane may not - th is is where the danger lies.

Cllr. Brenda Seaton said, "I am pleased to announce that after gathering traffic and footfall data plus traffic speeds and accident history in the last five years the proposal of a dual staggered toucan crossing is proposed."

The Parish Council are all in agreement but have requested that the crossing is programmed to take account of traffic to prevent it backing up.

9/2/21 at 1550 hrs: Theft of handbag at M&S Foodstore. This happened as a lady was putting food into her boot and her bag was hanging on her trolley. The bag disappeared but she didn't see anything .

15/2/21 at 2300 hrs: Report of burglary at 767 Melton Road. On arrival a cannabis grow was found with 40 small plants. The building was set-up for a larger production but some plants may have been stolen when the premises were broken into. One person has been arrested and enquiries are ongoing.

16/2/21 at 2100 hrs: Attempted catalytic convertor theft at Brackenfield Way. Owner of vehicle heard a noise, looked out of his window and saw a person under his car that had been jacked up. The person made off in a black Audi A4. No registration.

19/2/21 at 2145 hrs: Burglary at a ground floor flat in Checkland Road. Occupant briefly went outside to bring his dog in and left the patio door open. Whilst he was gone someone stole his laptop.

19/2/21 at 1235 hrs: Theft from Unit 17, Pinfold Road. A small vehicle was seen to pull up into the yard and a person got out and took a reel of copper cable, loaded it into the boot of the car and drove off.

22/2/21 at 0325 hrs: Burglary at Unit 12, Dukes Close (see right). Forced entry through door and laptops, cash and a van were stolen. The van was found and two persons arrested. Enquiries are ongoing.

23/2/21 at 2015 hrs: Theft of catalytic converter on Church Street from a VW Polo. Two males were seen leaving in a light coloured vehicle.

26/2/21 at 1100 hrs: Theft of phone from Raynsway Marina, Pinfold Road. A courier left a parcel outside the address and CCTV shows someone taking it. This person has been identified and enquiries are ongoing.

23/2/21 to 26/2/21 : Theft of a catalytic converter on Nursery Close from a Lexus.

No witnesses or suspects.

27/2/21 to 28/2/21: Criminal Damage at a dwelling on Highway Road. Overnight an outer pane of a double glazed window was smashed with a rock. No witnesses or suspects.

8/3/21 at 1655 hrs: Theft of bag from a person at Costco garage. Wh ilst vehicle owner was fuelling his car he left his bag on top of the petrol pump. Someone took the bag whilst he wasn't looking. Awaiting results from CCTV. DRUGS WARRANT EXECUTED: On 2/3/21 at 19 Brook Street a warrant was executed. Cannabis plants were seized and four people were arrested.

Duck Pond Lane speed limit reduction

The Parish Council pledged support at their February Zoom meeting on a proposal to reduce the speed limit on Duck Pond Lane, following a campaign

by Councillor Brenda Seaton.

The proposal is to reduce the existing 60mph speed limit to 50mph between Thurmaston and Barkby Thorpe and 40mph at the Duckpond Lane junction.

The Parish Council submitted the following comments to a recent consultation (with Leicestershire County Council's response in italics): • Requested rumble strips to be included with the dragon's teeth markings.

Refused as normally used as a gateway feature and concerns about noise.

• Requested signs to be erected on both sides to warn drivers of horses.

Refused - under directive to reduce sign clutter and are only used on roads associated with busy stables which is not the case here.

• Reduce the 40mph speed limit at the junction with Barkby Thorpe Lane to 30mph. Refused, whole road reviewed reduced from national speed limit to 40mph, supported by Police. Further reductions not required, various factors considered.

• Requested replacement of warning chevron signs on the bend. Aware of damage. In the process of arranging for a safety barrier to be put around the bend to prevent incursions of vehicles onto the rail track, after which the signs will be replaced.

Thank vou tor Beverlev Close article and photos Dear Thurmaston Times Editors, A big thank you for your interesting article on the history of Beverley Close, Thurmaston, Leicester.

Me and my family currently live on Beverley Close and have done so for the past 23 yea rs and I have always wondered what was here previously so it was great to hear about it.

If you have any more information on the history before the farm, more pictures of the farm/owners, stories or do find out the origin of the street name do let me know via email. Please also pass on our thanks to the lady who provided the information and photos!

Debbie Greenwood spotted a swan on Saltersgate Drive in Birstall and notified Julie (Watermead Swans) via Facebook leading to a rescue of three swans with the help of the police.

Two members of the public had been fantastic and walked them back from the top of Harrowgate.

The th ird cygnet was in someone's garden. It was iced up and not a good time for them to leave.

Julie and the police put them back in the enclosure with the parents.

Wreake Vallev Academv -50 vears on

50 years ago a Mesopotamian ziggurat (pyramid temple style building typically found in Mesopotamia, now Iraq) emerged in Syston - the Wreake Valley building. It always has been (and remains) architecturally quirky and relatively unique.

Over the last twelve months what goes on inside the building has undergone something of a transformation. Back in March 2020 a new Headteacher arrived and throughout the period of lockdowns 1, 2 and 3, a very confident and outward facing school has begun to re-emerge.

On the inside There has been significant investment in new classroom spaces and communal facilities. The aging theatre has been completely refitted and the main atrium space is now a light and modern hub at the heart of the school. The dining area has undergone a total transformation with

additional bench seating and American diner style booths.

The Bradgate Inclusion Centre The school has also invested in a dedicated inclusion centre for students who find communication and social interaction particularly challenging. The Bradgate Inclusion Centre opened during the lockdown period and will support up to 1O students over the forthcoming year.

Academy staff and pupils In the Academy itself, this year sees the intake at the school increase by 50%. The recruitment of 10 new staff will allow us to work with the increased number of students now opting to attend, whilst still maintaining relatively small class sizes. In its fiftieth year the school has defined itself one of the few in the country to offer completely open choices to students as they move through the school. The full national curriculum is taught to all students but in Year 9 they select the subjects they are keenest to pursue without limitations based on the subjects upon which the school are judged.

Looking ahead The staff at the school are excited for the future and proud of the history of the school. It is exciting to think that the next fifty years will offer such a modern and vibrant experience to the local community.

Dennis Bright Swann

Den was contacted by local bandleaders, and it wasn't long before he had regular gigs, which he loved. He was in demand as a trumpeter and played for Radio Leicester fanfare big band, and many other bands including a small jazz band, in later years.

We are sad to report Dennis also played in a band for Winston the death of Dennis Churchill's funeral.

Old School sale proceeds to benefit St Michael's Church Following the sale of Thurmaston Old School Community Centre in January 2021, the Trustee Board met on 15th February 2021 for their Annual General Meeting.

It was agreed to dissolve the charity, and an application will now be made to the Charity Commission for England and Wales for the charity to be dissolved and removed from the Register of Charities. In accordance with the constitution registered with the Charity Commission, the net assets of the charity will be applied to the Parochial Church Council of St Michael & All Angels, Thurmaston - the legal entity behind St Michael & All Angels' Church, Thurmaston.

Speaking after the meeting, the Reverend Tim Day, Chair of Trustees and Vicar of Thurmaston said, "Trustees felt that having sold the building, the charity had run its course and it made sense to apply to the Charity Commission to dissolve the charity". He continued, "There are of course formalities to conclude and final bills to pay before the net assets of the

charity can be calculated. It will then be a matter for the Parochial Church Council to decide how best this generous gift might be used by the church to achieve the church's mission, Living as Christ in our commu nity to share the love of God".

At the Annual General Meeting, trustees also agreed to award Certificates of Appreciation to Mrs Maureen Tebbutt and Mr Darren Gartside for their service as Trustees, and as Treasurer/Lettings Officer, and Secretary, respectively.

Arrangements for presentations will be made once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Rev Tim Day concluded, "I am very grateful to all who serve and have served within the parish, often sacrificially, of their time, talents, and money".

with Helen ~ This is our regular.feature by local ganiener Helen Osborne who guides us through the seasons with hints and tips for our gardens.

I have been watching the wild birds in my garden, and even though it is small I have seen a pair of blackbirds, a pair of dunnocks, and a pair of robins. This is a sign that spring is just around the corner. In the garden the spring flowering bulbs will have finished flowering, they may look untidy, but let the leaves die back completely, this allows the goodness to go back to the bulb for next year.

If you have any snowdrops, now is a good time to lift them and replant them in the green. One of the nicest smells in the early summer is the smell of the grass being mowed. The first cut high and when it is not too wet. I love growing my own plants, now is a perfect time to sow seeds, use multi purpose compost, sieve, cover over with glass and wait for the first seedlings to germinate. When the seedlings are big enough to handle pot on into a bigger container. Ideal plants that I like are sweet peas, they give a nice fragrance and are nice to have as a cut flower in the house. Now is a good time to lift any winter flowering bedding plants, like polyanthus, they come back year after year, split them with a knife and

replant them. They will die back now but they will give you colour in the spring next year. Remove any fallen leaves that are on any of the border there are plants just starting to come back, if the leaves are left on then they will rot the plant. We all like the thought of growing our own vegetables, it is an ideal way of getting your children interested in the garden.

Start with salad plants like mixed lettuce, radish and strawberries, these are easy to grow and don't take long before they will be able to eat the produce.

Local gardener releases lirst children's book

Local gardener Helen Osborne, who advertises in the Thurmaston Times, has published her first children's book.

'Molly Saves The Bees' follows Molly's adventures in the garden as she meets characters such Rodger the Robin, Sidney the Snail, Holly the Hedgehog and Stephanie the Spider and attempts to help the bees in the forbidden garden.

The garden comes alive in this book which has been written and illustrated by Helen, who drew inspiration from her own passion for the garden.

Back in 1989 some of the houses on Sandiacre Drive were practically re-built following safety concerns.

The houses, originally built in the 1960s are known as 'Reema Houses', which were built using four prefabricated re-inforced concrete panels for each wall and finished with washed aggregate or a textured concrete face with a cement paint.

The safety fear was that the steel reenforcement rods would rust and threaten the stability of the building.

Before the work began all the internal fittings were removed and along with personal possessions were stored in storage containers on the grassed area on Sandiacre Drive.

Then the building work began by supporting the roof with props and removing the side wall, rebuilding it, then the back and finally the front wall. The properties also benefited from new

windows and residents also had the opportunity to up-grade items such as kitchens and central heating.

Christine Hutchins lives in one of the houses and remembers the disruption the rebuilding caused to family life. She said, "We had bought the former Council house but the Council considered them to be dangerous so they offered us residents grants to rectify the problem. That meant we had to move out whilst the work was carried out and we were tempora rily rehoused locally so that the children could continue at the same schools. I remember three or four families moved out at the same time and were re-housed and moved back in when their houses were finished and the next families moved out, each house took between four and six months to complete and were fi nished around 1990."

It is understood that the houses were not found to be dangerous.

BEFORE: The 'Reema House' - the four concrete panels can be seen on the front of the house.

WALL REMOVED: The roof was propped up and the side of the house removed.

REBUILDING THE WALL: Each wall was removed and re-built.

AFTER: The concrete panels are gone and replaced with brick.

Diamond Wedding Anniversarv

Pamela and Roy Bodicoat celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday 4th March 2021.

They were married at St Michael's and All Angels Church in Thurmaston on 4th March 1961. Roval British legion _Thurmaston AGM The Branch Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday 14th October 2020 via Zoom, where all key roles were filled for a further term.

Branch President, Cllr Dave Atterbury said, "We're grateful to all who serve throughout the year in these roles and delighted that once again we have an enthusiastic and committed team".

Cllr Andy Dent, Branch Chairman said, "There are still volunteering opportunities for more people to get involved, particularly in October and November when we collect for the Poppy Appeal - subject to any Covid-19 restrictions that may be in place".

Charnwood Borough Council have provided advice and guidance to the hospitality sector opening outside areas in step 2 of the roadmap.

There will be no restrictions on opening hours and the sale of alcohol (other than any specific planning or licensing restrictions that may apply).

There will not be a requirement to purchase a substantial meal with a drink.

However, the following restrictions and limitations will apply: • Outdoor service only (any structure must be at least 50% open to the air) • Table service only (for ordering, consumption and payment) • Maximum number of 2 households or up to 6 people from different households • Social Distancing requirements will apply (2m or reduction to 1m with mitigation) • Customers to wear face covering when passing through permitted indoor areas e.g. for toilet usage.

Preparing to reopen In addition, consider the following before reopening: • If you intend to open for outdoor service, you must assess how many customers you can safely accommodate, seated, allowing for adequate social distancing, queuing, ordering and payment.

• Make sure you have enough trained staff to manage safely and in accordance with the regulations and guidance.

• Let customers know about your rules and seating capacity before you open. Using Social Media is a good way.

• Make sure you have systems in place to take orders and payments at the table.

• If you provide food, ensure your kitchen staff review your food supplies for durability dates, condition and labelling.

• Make sure your staff have the necessary food, safety and Covid awareness training. Refresher courses are recommended.

• Carry out a deep clean of your kitchen ready for trading.

As we enter Spring 2021, I would like to bring you all up to date with arrangements for the Parish facilities.

Thurmaston Parish Council Office and Elizabeth Park Sports Centre remain closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Clerk and Deputy Clerk to the Council are working from home and can be reached by email or phone (see below).

Council Tax updates It's that time of year again when the Council Tax bill arrives through the letter box. It has gone up 17 .5% and that is because the parks, buildings and associated playing fields have not been able to generate any income th is year from football, weddings, parties, training events, and regular hirers. The buildings still need maintaining, the grass still needs cutting, the play equipment still need tending to because of health and safety. 17.5% does seem a big increase but it is an overall figure needed to maintain the village facilities divided by all Thurmaston Council tax payers. For a band D property it has gone up from £141.22 per year to £165.93 an increase of £24.71. This equates to 48p per week or £2.47 over the ten council tax months.

Ongoing work Parish Council Meetings and Committee Meetings are still taking place via Zoom and members of the public are very welcome to join the meetings. Agendas and Zoom joining instructions are available on the Parish Council website or by contacting the Clerk.

Council grounds staff are still working keeping our buildings, parks and cemetery in good order but unfortunately, many of our Leisure Centre Staff remain furloughed until we can re-open our premises.

The Memorial Hall is open weekdays for Thurmaston Pre-school but evening bookings including many of our regular hirers are not able to take place at this time. Similarly, Jubilee Pavilion is open for School, however evening and weekend bookings and sports clubs are not taking place.

On a more positive note, the Government's Roadmap out of lockdown brings fresh hope going forward. In accordance with the second stage of step 1, we are hoping to open Elizabeth Park Sports Centre for football, opening our 3G pitches on Monday 29th March when the rule of 6 is allowed again and outdoor sports may recommence. Fingers crossed, if all goes well, step 2 will begin around the 12th April including the re-opening of gyms and indoor leisure. We are looking forward to welcoming back our regular

clubs and events at Elizabeth Park Centre.

The Jubilee pavilion has been decorated in preparation for the new Boxing Gym which will be opening in June (pending all goes well).

The Parish Council continues to work on behalf of our residents and has recently supported the following schemes and initiatives: Christmas Lights Festival 2021 At the last Council meeting it was agreed that an event should be provisionally planned for 28th November 2021. The Memorial Hall has been booked.

Earls Way Chimney Emissions Following further complaints from residents, the Parish Council has requested that the Borough Council arrange air quality monitoring. Previous requests have unfortunately been refused.

Grass Verge Damage . - - - - - -- - , The grass verges on Beacon Avenue, Bradgate Avenue and Church Hill Road (opposite the school} have large ruts, possibly caused by lorries mounting the verge. The Parish Council has requested that the County Council repair the damage.

Road humps, Barkby Thorpe Lane Residents have complained about vibrations in their property when HGV vehicles pass over the road humps and the potential implication for their properties.

This matter has been reported to Leicestershire County Council.

Church Hill bridge flooding investigated Church Hill Road railway bridge was closed for two days in March to allow investigation work into flooding and drainage to be carried out.

Traffic management was put in place to allow covers to be lifted safely to measure the build up of silt and also allow the road to be scanned by a radar to detect underground services.

Cllr. Brenda Seaton met with representatives from Leicestershire County Council Highways department at the bridge to discuss the various options to try to remedy this problem, she said, "I am frustrated by the lack of action over the last few years and I offered various suggestions to them including building a retaining wall to prevent soil from the railway embankment being washed down into the

drains and improvement to the signage around the bridge. It is very unlikely that any sort of pumping arrangement will be installed due to the cost.

The officers from the Council are looking into the most cost effective solution and I await the outcome of their findings but in the meantime I will continue to press both the County Council and Network Rail to keep this problem at the top of their agenda."

Poems being invited for Covid-19 memorial tree at cemeterv

Thurmaston Parish Council are taking delivery of an elm tree which was one of 50 donated to local parishes by Goscote Nurseries.

Elm trees were decimated in the 1970s and 80s by Dutch Elm Disease and the nursery have been growing a number of these trees which were micro-propogated from elms that survived the disease.

The Parish Council are to plant the tree in the new cemetery extension and a plaque will be erected in remembrance of those Thurmaston residents who lost their lives to Covid-19.

Therefore the Parish Council are inviting residents to submit a suitable poem to be included on the plaque of up to 100 words.

Thurmaston road closures Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTRO) are to be made for the following locations: Church Hill Road, 27th April The purpose of the TTRO is to allow Cadent Gas, or their contractors, to undertake works on a new gas connection.

The TTRO will incorporate a temporary road closure. The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 7 days commencing on the 27th April 2021.

woollv warriors needed tor the Big Knit The Big Knit campaign has returned and Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland is calling on knitters and crocheters to get their needles out again to help raise urgent funds for local older people most in need.

This is the 18th year that the Big Knit has been running and woolly warriors are needed again this year to craft some little hats to sit on innocent smoothie bottles.

For each be-hatted smoothie sold, Age UK receives 25p, which will help the charity make a big difference to the lives of older people.

With many of us spending lots of time at home at the moment it's a great opportunity for stitching superstars to get crafting, or for knitting newbies to grab some needles and give it a whirl. The pandemic has had a huge impact on older people over the past year so Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland is in need of

Corner shop owner retires after 38 vears

Pravin Patel, who has run "Your Friendly Corner Shop" on Hill Rise, Leicester for 38 years , retired on Sunday, 21st February, 2021.

Pravin bought the shop, previously a butcher's, in 1983.

Over those years he has worked hard to establish his business, selling almost everything locals could want.

Always cheerful, he has been a lifeline over the last 12 months

supplying all staples, delivered by a friendly face to those that are self-isolating. He could be seen daily walking the streets as he delivered, carrying bags to those unable to leave their homes. This was the norm he's always been just a 'phone call away for the less physically able. Pravin has been a source of neighbourly knowledge that has helped residents constantly over the years to keep neighbours' welfare secure.

A keen gardener and traveller with two daughters, he will be greatly missed and all his customers and friends hope he enjoys his future leisure time.

Children and Families Worker Update It seems so long ago now, but Christmas came and went, we celebrated in a different way, but in some ways, that was even more special.

Time to actually reflect on the reason for Christmas rather than the usual rushing round trying to get everything done in time for a big soci~ event. Time to spend Christmas Day with just our immediate family, now that was special.

I think that is what lockdowr has given me, time to reflect, to spend t me with God and appreciate all that he has given me.

And as spring is sneaking in I have the time to go for a walk and see the beauty in God's creation.

So, to the future. What does coming out of lockdown look like? I know we have the Government's Road Map and, hopefully if everyone does the right thing we can

come out of lockdown smoothly.

I am hoping to open Bright Sparks toddler group again later in the spring April/May, subject to Covid-19 restrictions.

It will be so exciting as we will be in our new home at Tangent House.

The church building may be closed but you can still come to church by viewing our weekly online services.

Another casualty of Covid

Trolleywise

The Head of Strategic and Private Sector Housing, the residents of St Michael's Court and I met regarding the redevelopment of St Michael's Court on Melton Road.

The two-storey sheltered housing was originally built in 1969 and consists of 23 units. The 23 units are not acceptable for today's ideals as the majority do not have their own private bathroom and a review concluded that refurbishment work alone could not deliver a scheme that meets all the requirements of the Sheltered Housing Standard.

I was fed up to my back teeth of reporting abandoned Asda trolleys around Thurmaston, I even handed over pictures and a marked map to the store manager with very limited success.

I went online to report them as a complaint to Asda but no response.

Dunelm trolleys were also becoming a problem, so much so that in several places around the village they had been gathered to stop them ending up in the road or on the park. Then I started coming across Sainsbury's trolleys, so I went online to see if they had a way of reporting them on line.

However, what I did find was even better! Trolleywise provide a service to collect abandoned shopping trolleys.

Through a free app that you can download to any smartphone anyone can take a picture of the trolley and it immediately pinpoints your position. You then enter how many and what store they are from.

Registering on the app enters your name into a league. I am in position 853 and have reported 31 since registering. The person is position one has reported over 1000. Unfortunately, some stores like Dunelm and TK Maxx do not subscribe to this service but when I emailed Dunelm's MD my request was responded to immediately and the nine Dunelm trolleys were collected the next day.

An amazing statistic is that more than 500,000 shopping trolleys are taken from UK retailers and abandoned in towns, cities and rivers across the UK each year.

Therefore, a plan was unveiled to redevelop to a 3-storey building of 34 to 36 fully self-contained flats. The meeting also informed the residents of the support packages that would be available to help residents out financially to move out and another package to move back, if that is what they wanted to do. This information came with a caveat though and I must admit one I did not pick up on at the time: the redevelopment and the financial help would not happen until the Cabinet had agreed to the rebuild. Unfortunately, Covid19 has impacted on these plans, making certain aspects of the project, such as surveys, impossible to undertake while maintaining social distancing requirements.

However, in the meantime a few residents sought other accommodation whilst others had legitimate reasons to request an immediate move due to intolerable living conditions. A small number of residents now occupy St Michael's Court and I was contacted last month to find out what was happening. I was shocked that the residents had not been kept informed and have requested that a letter go out immediately to inform the residents. The letter will inform that Covid-19 has delayed plans and the Borough Council has continued to work on the parts of the review that could be taken forward . The plans being developed have considered the approved Sheltered Housing Standards and the significantly higher space and amenity standards required from a replacement scheme and an updated timetable will be produced , and I have been assured that this will be shared.

Car park being put through the Mill!

Although Mill Lane off Melton Road is unadopted, it leads to a Leicestershire County Council car park and apparently comes under the management of Watermead Country Park, but I am not sure when that happened.

Several years ago, the car park was improved, albeit only slightly, by spreading quarry waste over a heavily rutted and uneven surface. The car park was well used but adequate for the local users however, the parking and anti-social behaviour there has increased 6-fold since Covid. With the temporary closures of the

I have been contacted by several different people through Facebook and email about the pigeon mess on the children's swings on Garden Street park. I asked the Parish Council if some spikes could be put on the top of the swing to deter birds from perching there. As it is a public area, steel spikes could not be put in place because of health and safety but plastic ones could.

Sadly, almost as soon as they were installed I was contacted by a mother informing me that a carer of a small child that was using the playground had purposely broken off several spikes from one end of the swing. I was obviously disappointed that someone would do that but hoped it was a one-off. However, a few weeks later the baby swings were thrown over the top bar breaking off the majority of the remaining spikes.

What are the Parish Council to do?

Replace and hope for the best. Of course they will but it is so annoying! If you do see people vandalising the play equipment remember if you are a resident of Thurmaston YOU pay towards repairing any damage through the parish part of your council tax. So please report it to me and if possible, take discreet details of the perpetrators.

larger car parks to Watermead, regular and new users looked for alternative parking possibilities and unfortunately, they found Mill Lane and seem unwilling to return to their usual habits.

Watermead car park to the north have 104 hard surfaced, marked out spaces with a charge of £2.50. At the southern end there are 60 spaces and an increasing hourly charge starting at £1 for one hour increasing in steps to £4 for 12 hours.

Meadow Lane in Birstall does offer free parking but it was hard surfaced when the park was developed.

Mill Lane car park does not have markedout spaces. The surface does not cope well to continuous reversing and the lane is only suitable for a single vehicle. It does or did, have a central grassed area to the centre that has been churned up in order to fit the 35 cars that were parked there when I visited last Sunday.

If this is going to be a continuing trend then the car park and Mill Lane need to be upgraded to cope.

I have raised this issue with Leicestershire County Council and await a reply.

Runners raised £1215 tor Prostate Cancer UK Selina Thraves and Donna Leahy took part in the Run The Marathon for Prostate Cancer UK during January.

The challenge was to run the equivalent of a marathon 26.2 miles during the month of January.

As they both run regularly, they decided to increase the challenge and ran 52. 7 miles each!

Prostate Cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, killing one man every 45 minutes.

This charity is close to both Selina and Donna, having both lost loved ones to this illness.

Though it was cold, dark and wet on occasions, it had been inspiring to have

Steve and Ellie -retiring uuietlv

Familiar faces at the Harrow Inn, Steve and Ellie Ward are retiring from the pub on 3rd May, 2021.

Steve and Ellie have worked in hospitality for over 40 years - nightclubs, pubs and high class restaurants. During this time they have worked locally for Everards Brewery for over 25 years, becoming friends with Richard Everard and even going on holiday together.

They have won 'Pub of the Year' a stonking nine times at various pubs and they have also trained other licensees for Everards Brewery. Steve was originally an architect by trade, he worked for Mecca Leisure designing restaurants.

Steve and Ellie ran The Willow on Humberstone Lane from 2000-2009 which they refurbished and extended, they then moved to the Rose and Crown in Thurnby.

It was an idyllic setting with a thatched roof and roses around the door. The plan was then to wind down for retirement.

All that changed in 2014 when Steve was taking the dog to the vet one day and saw the sign being put up at The Harrow as he drove past. As soon as he got home he rang up to enquire and before long the

retirement plans were shelved so that Steve and Ellie could return to the heart of the community in Thurmaston to run The Harrow Inn on Melton Road.

The pub became a favourite with locals and when asked Steve said: "The secret to running a successful pub is the food", we at the Thurmaston Times have certainly enjoyed their carvery over the years!

The pub has also been a popular venue for many presentation nights, family parties, funerals and was also well known for their variety of entertainment and live music with top tribute acts and regular quizzes and discos.

The Harrow was also home to local fund raising group the 'Tie Club' and have been pleased to be involved with their many wacky fund raising activities which included sticking a mile of 1p pieces to the ceiling and building a replica pub on the car park!

Steve and Ellie had planned to retire in 2021 but instead they've spent the various lockdowns cleaning and decorating the pub ready for the new owners.

Like all the hospitality industry the pandemic hit the pub hard and The Harrow did reopen with restrictions when allowed but stock went out of date and social distancing meant significantly reduced numbers of customers and therefore sales.

Perhaps closure during lockdown has also given them a taste of life at home once retired?

When asked about retirement Steve said: "It's time to retire now. Things change, we aren't as young as we used to be when we

kept up with all the trends in food, drink, and music. We will miss the banter especially when the football teams come in after their matches. You don't get that with the dog and the missus!"

So what next? Like everyone else's celebrations, there won't be a big party but Steve and Ellie have plenty to look forward to.

Their daughter, Nicky, who has worked with them for many years is now starting a family and they are looking forward to becoming grandparents and are also considering buying a ca ravan by the sea.

We wish Steve and Ellie a long and happy retirement - at least until the next Thurmaston pub needs a new boss!

Sweet sound ot success On Sunday 14th February, nine students from Pitch Perfect Singing Lessons took part in Leicester MusicFest online and competed against singers from around the county and further afield.

The students competed in the songs from the stage and screen categories, where they sang songs from big musicals such as Les Miserables, Mamma Mia and Beetlejuice.

Sidney Conquest, Lucy Gregory, Sophia Lawrence, Evan French, Maisie Read, Ella Bradbury, Lacey Chapman, Olivia Chaplin and Emma Hearnden took part.

Not only did the students all give amazing performances, they also came away with some amazing results: Lucy Gregory was awarded 2nd place in the elementary category. Emma Hearnden was awarded 2nd place in the intermediate category.

Lacey Chapman came away with her arms full of trophies after being awarded 1st place in both the intermediate and the advanced categories.

Lara Batchelor, local singing teacher said, "I am so proud of each and every one of my students and the progress that they have made."

Advice • during the ··.... pandemic Since the first lockdown in March 2020, Citizens Advice Charnwood has helped nearly 1,500 people with over 4,500 issues since the first lockdown in March 2020.

Many of these issues relate to the adverse impact of Coronavirus, particularly in the areas of benefits, debt and employment.

Local people are facing situations they never anticipated including understanding the benefit system or the new furlough and job retention schemes.

Debt is an increasing issue for people in Charnwood with job losses leading to unexpected hardship.

Citizens Advice Charnwood are able to make referrals to food banks for the most vulnerable and for those moving to benefits for the first time, who may have a four week wait for the payment to be made.

The Charnwood team reacted quickly back in March and

adapted their Loughborough offices making them Covid safe so they are ready to make some face-to-face appointments when the restrictions are finally lifted.

These appointments are especially helpful to clients needing to complete complicated forms which can be a struggle over the phone.

The team also ensured that they were able to look after local people through the lockdown by setting up the Urgent Local Enquiry Line for Charnwood residents. This has proved a lifeline for many people who receive a call back, usually within an hour, from one of the team of advisors working from home.

It is anticipated that the demand for the service will continue to increase as long as there are restrictions in place.

Citizens Advice Charnwood will continue to advise on all matters (including those outside of Covid).
