Work has started on the Thorpebury development - the first phase of the building of 4500 houses to the east of Thurmaston The Thorpebury Development, (also called the North East Leicester Sustainable Urban extension), is a new development of 4,500 new houses.

The diggers started earthworks at the end of August after a significant delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

There will be two new main access points into the development - a southern access road that will meet the A563 at the Sandhills Avenue junction and a northern access road that will join the A607 between Thurmaston and Syston. Later, an internal spine road will connect these two access points.

Secondary accesses into the site will be provided from Barkby Thorpe Road, Barkby Thorpe Lane, Barkby lane, Hamilton Lane, Colby Road, Colby Drive and Hilltop Road.

Some of these access points will be permanent links whilst others are temporary - to be used during construction.

The majority of the development is within Charnwood although the southern access road is within the City of Leicester.

The following crimes have been reported to us: Between 13/9 and 17/9 on Checkland road. Attempted burglary. Lock was broken on door but no entry gained.

14/8 at 0015 hrs at Conservative Club, Melton Road. Damage caused to a ground floor window. The suspect was known and has been dealt with.

15/8 at 1430 hrs at Costco car park a vehicle was ' keyed '. No witnesses or suspects.

15/8 overnight on Alpine Drive. Damage to car window.

21/8 at 0830 hrs. At cash point on Humberstone Lane. Person using cash point forgot to take their cash and went back later to find it had been taken.

Enquiries are ongoing including CCTV footage.

22/8 at 1400 hrs at Boots. Theft of merchandise. Enquiries ongoing.

23/8 at 1800 hrs at Next. Theft of clothing.

1/9 at 1100 hrs on Brook Street. Theft of delivery van that had been left running and unattended.

2/9 at 1415 hrs at TK Maxx. Theft of merchandise.

3/9 at 1730 hrs on Melton Road. Report of sudden death. Not deemed as suspicious.

6/9 at 1730 hrs at M&S, retail park. Theft of merchandise.

6/9 at 2200 hrs on Alpine drive. Damage to a car door mirror.

7/9 at 0845 hrs outside Bishop Ellis School. Vehicle was 'keyed' whilst parent dropped off child to the school.

8/9 at 1800 hrs on Melton road. Front number plate stolen from parked vehicle.

11/9 at 0900 hrs at The Harrow Inn on Melton road. Theft of used cooking oil.

Enquiries ongoing.

We did see a change in crime patterns over the lock down period but as we are all now getting back to normal it is important to keep good crime-prevention habits.

Young people across Thurmaston have received exam results after another year of uncertainty.

Students at Wreake, Roundhill and Bradgate Sixth Form have secured very strong results.

Over 100 students from both secondary schools have opted to continue their studies at Bradgate Sixth Form.

At almost eighty years of age, I have fond and wonderful memories of our local area. I wonder how many readers can remember the days prior to the Thurmaston Bypass being opened to traffic.

Before the world went crazy and when all road traffic travelled along Melton Road, through Thurmaston old Village.

Very few people could afford a car.

Indeed you were lucky if you could afford a bicycle. Remember the Midland Red bus service? Living in Thurmaston we had a really good bus service for travelling to Leicester City. Remember the old buses that came through the village? 617, 618, 619, 651, 659. Syston, Queniborough, Rearsby and Thrussington, Barkby and Sileby. I think also the Melton Mowbray service, correct me if I'm wrong, was 661 or 660. I remember paying a fare from Syston to Leicester St Margaret's 10 pence half-penny. Then, was less than 1 shilling.

(5 new pence) On Melton Road, going south, was the Manor Hotel where the dual carriageway started with cycle track in both directions. I seem to remember that originally the surface on both lanes was on concrete. A walk from Manor Road travelling towards

the city took you by some garden allotments on the left-hand side. A little further, where Sainsburys is today, was the old B.T.H. Co. Ltd. manufacturing MAZDA lamps. Alongside which were the remnants of many air raid shelters. On the opposite side of the road a café doing a roaring trade from early arrivals grabbing a cuppa before starting work at the factory. The air in the café thick with the smell of burning bacon fat and cigarette smoke.

WONDERFUL POLLUTION!!

A little further south on Melton Road on the same side as the café was the Speedway public house. Popular with workers from the B.T.H. at Christmas time.

Rushey Mead was the terminus for the city corporation bus service. From there you could use that service into the city. I remember Norths Travel Agency at Melton Turn. They had a model railway in their shop window that could be operated by a button to press on the outside of the window sill.

Facing redundancy?

Citizens Advice Charnwood advise on your rights if you are facing redundancy.

If I have been furloughed can I be made redundant?

Yes, you can. You should still have the same rights to redundancy pay, holiday pay and notice pay as if you were employed as normal.

Payments will be calculated based on your full wages rather than your furlough wages. Employees who are put on the new jobs support scheme cannot be made redundant while the Government is paying some of their wages.

How much notice should I get if I'm made redundant?

You must be given at least one week's notice that your job is ending if you've worked at the company for less than two years. If you have worked there for longer, you get one week's notice for every year you have been employed up to a maximum of 12 weeks or your notice period whichever is greater.

You should receive your usual pay while on notice - or the average you earned over the past 12 weeks if on flexible wages.

Was it fair?

Employers are not allowed to make people redundant for certain reasons such as working part-time, their gender or age, or a disability. It could also be considered sex

discrimination if you are a woman caring for a child or relative and are made redundant because you work less flexible hours.

Redundancy can also be an unfair dismissal if you're selected because you complained about health and safety.

Do I have to take an alternative role if they offer one?

Companies might offer a suitable alternative role. It should be relatively similar to your current job description, pay, hours and location.

You could lose your right to statutory redundancy pay if you unreasonably turn down a new role that is deemed to be suitable. You have the right to a four-week trial period for any alternative employment you're offered.

Can you be made redundant while off sick?

This could qualify as unfair dismissal unless your employer can prove there was a genuine reason you needed to be made redundant. You cannot be made redundant because of your illness.

Can I be made redundant while on maternity leave?

Although you can be made redundant while pregnant or on maternity leave, the reason cannot be because you're pregnant or on maternity leave. This would count as discrimination. If you are pregnant or on

maternity leave you should be given priority for any suitable alternative roles.

How does voluntary redundancy work?

You should still get your usual redundancy rights even if you choose to leave voluntarily. Sometimes employers offer incentives for taking voluntary redundancy, such as extra redundancy pay or not having to work your notice period.

Volunteering to be made redundant does not necessarily mean you'll be picked. You could also consider taking early retirement.

What benefits can I claim if I've been made redundant?

You might be entitled to benefits such as Universal Credit. You might also be able to claim Jobseeker's Allowance if you're actively looking for work or Employment and Support Allowance if you're ill and cannot work.

Ian Dennis, Chief Officer at Citizens Advice Charnwood, said, “As the Government furlough scheme winds down and employers are left with increasing wage bills we know that many people may be facing redundancy.* This can be a very difficult time and it is important that people understand their rights and know where to get support.”

Reducing plastic with free shopping bags

Harborough Morsbag are giving away bags made from recycled fabric to help reduce the use of plastic.

Morsbags.com is an international organisation started by Claire Morsman.

She lives on a canal boat in London and wanted to come up with a solution to all the plastic bags that ended up in the waterways, Claire created a simple sewing pattern which is freely available for anyone to make their own shopping bag.

Market Harborough improvement group heard about the idea and started the Harborough Morsbags pod in 2008. Initially there were six people, which has now increased to 16. They have made over 30,000 bags since they started - making them the top voluntary pod in the world!

They used to meet once a month to share fabric, cut and sew bags, plus to enjoy the social aspect of meeting. Face-to-face meetings have not yet resumed following the various lockdowns but Harbough Morsbags are still working hard.

What’s a pod?

The individual groups are called ‘pods’ , inspired by the name for a collective of whales. Why? Because plastic is a huge problem that affects marine life.

Anyone can start a pod, there are no minimum numbers or requirements.

How can you get involved?

There are quite a few pods in Leicestershire - take a look online for

details of how to contact a nearby pod.

You can access the free patterns online and create your own Morsbags. Or why not start your own pod?

You can also help by donating fabric or simply using your bag for others to see.

Fabric is collected through word of mouth and specific drop-off locations such as the Harborough Council offices and businesses local to them.

What sort of fabric can be used?

Large pieces of fabric such as old curtains and duvet covers are ideal. Thick or thin fabric such as upholstery material and sheeting is unsuitable. Cottons are preferable to stretch fabrics like jersey.

Sewing thread can also be donated.

Any unsuitable fabrics received are passed on to charity shops. Offcuts can sometimes be too small but the volunteers try to use them for handles or smaller bags such as gift bags and bottle bags.

Why are the bags given away for free?

Initially the idea was to counter the free plastic bags from supermarkets, although there is now a 10p charge for plastic bags.

Volunteers don’t have to worry about how to price the bags or dealing with money.

Everyone loves receiving things for free it’s hard to say no to a freebie! People are

often inspired to ‘pay it forward’ by getting involved or passing the bag on to a friend to use.

Each bag has a label on it which helps to promote the concept of Morsbags.

Initially the Harborough Morsbags were funded by Harborough Council. They are now self-funded but they have very few costs - labels and printing. Fumes on Earls Way

Following ongoing complaints from residents, the Parish Council have continued to requeste that the Borough Council arrange air quality monitoring.

A Charnwood Borough Council spokesperson said, “The council will always investigate environmental health complaints and we would encourage people to report issues.”

Since 2016 only 30 complaints had been received. Every complaint is investigated and the premises have been visited. The business owner is working with the relevant authorities to form a front facing odour management plan.

GARDEN with Helen This is our regular feature by local gardener Helen Osborne who guides us through the seasons with hints and tips for our gardens.

The nights are drawing in slowly, and the weather is getting cooler, but put on your coat and boots and get outside as there is still plenty to be done in the garden.

Leaves will now be falling, it is important to remove them from paths and borders.

If they are left on top of existing plants, this prevents them from rooting over the winter when the weather turns colder and wetter. If you have an area that you can store the leaves, they will make an excellent leaf mould when they have broken down they will make an excellent soil enhancement to help the plants.

Summer flowering plants will be looking tired, if you have a greenhouse, a cold frame, or a conservatory frost-free. Pot any geraniums and fuchsias in multipurpose compost, water in lightly but over the winter months keep them dry as possible, and if the weather does turn very cold put some garden fleece and cover the plants. Remember to remove when the weather gets warmer. All you have to do is wait and see any new shoots growing in the spring.

I like to see bright colours over the winter when the weather is gloomy and dark, why not plant some winter-flowering pansies, violas and polyanthus? Fill containers with fresh compost and get planting, water in lightly, but don't overwater in the winter months. Then wait for the colour to appear. I also add spring flowering dwarf bulbs to the containers.

Suitable bulbs include crocuses, tulips, and my favourite is the dwarf daffodil Tete a Tete, which is about 12" inches in height, and forms multi heads of small

yellow flowers. When planting the bulbs plant in compost, plant twice the depth of the bulb.

It is important to cut back tall shrubs like Buddliea's and Lavateria. They grow very quick in one year, and can easily be damaged if it is windy over the winter. If the plant is relatively young, about 5 years old, then cut back the shoots by a quarter, if the plant is very woody cut back by a third.

Times Past Thurmaston Parish Church

We celebrate 800 years of the Church of St. Michael and All Angels in 2021. Let’s take a look at some snippets from the past.

Heating was provided by a single stove in the main body of the church. The parish chest was situated to the right of the entrance into the tower, and the font was against the wall to the left.

In 1848 the Church of St. Michael and All Angels was in a dilapidated state and it was decided to restore and enlarge the building.

A Mr Spurrell donated £800 and Thomas Allen, churchwarden, gave £100.

Cards were printed depicting the proposed new church, asking for contributions.

Bulb planting

Bright Sparks baby and toddler group have been busy planting bulbs at St Michael’s church.

As part of the 800th anniversary celebrations of St Michael and All Angels Church, a few members of Bright Sparks planted some crocus bulbs in the church yard. Jasmine, Ruby and Piper all had fun planting and watering the bulbs and are looking forward to seeing them flower in the spring.

Public consultation on electoral review

An electoral review examines and proposes new electoral arrangements for a local authority, in this case Charnwood Borough Council.

The review considers how many councillors are needed to cover the local authority, how many wards or electoral divisions there should be, where their boundaries are and what they should be called also the number of councillors to represent each ward or division. A review of Charnwood Borough Council is being carried out now because some councillors currently represent many more or fewer voters than others. This is 'electoral inequality'. Therefore, the aim is to create 'electoral equality', where votes are as equal as possible, ideally within 10% of being exactly equal. The proposals is that Charnwood should be represented by 52 councillors, the same number as there are now. Charnwood should have 24 wards, four fewer than now. The boundaries of 26 wards should change but two wards, Anstey and Quorn & Mountsorrel Castle, will stay the same. The review will also decide which ward you vote in, which other communities are in that ward, and, in some cases, which parish council ward you vote in. Your ward name may also change. The recommendations cannot affect the external boundaries of the borough or result in changes to postcodes.

What it means for Thurmaston Thurmaston parish forms a three-councillor ward being myself (Brenda Seaton), Mark Lowe and Matthew Brooks and at present we have fewer electors per councillor than average in the borough however we would have 14% more electors per councillor following the development of Thorpebury off Barkby Thorpe Road which is expected to increase the electors by 2,000 by 2027 and many more in the years after that. The recommendation is that Thurmaston parish be split between two wards, each represented by two councillors. The first two-member ward would be the western parts of Thurmaston parish whilst the second two-member ward would be made up from Thurmaston lying to the east of the main railway line together with the rural parishes of Barkby, Barkby Thorpe, Beeby and South Croxton and the parish of Hamilton Lea. However this would result in an 'electoral inequality' therefore it is proposed that Charnwood Avenue, Highway Road, Eastfield Road, Earls Way and the Barrett's estate be included. The name suggested for that ward is South Charnwood Villages but I will request that the ward name should be South

Charnwood only to reflect the added areas and that Hamilton Lea does not have a village status.

Miriam Margolyes interviews Thurmaston rower

Thurmaston rower and multiple Guiness record-holder, Graham Walters, has been interviewed by actress, Miriam Margoyles.

Miriam has played many roles in her career including that of Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films.

Renovations continue on Old School building

Work continues on the building including stripping and rebuilding the roof.

The new owners are YDS, a registered UK based charity (Charity number 803601) and trusted Hindu spiritual and humanitarian charitable organisation.

Work continues at pace and is due to finish by the end of the year.

The new owners are working hard to upgrade the inside of the building whilst also ensuring that the outside is maintained.

Janet Dent

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Janet Dent, aged 82.

In a break with tradition, Janet had written her own eulogy which was read out

by Rev’d Tim Day at her funeral.

Janet wrote, “You may think it a bit odd for someone to write their own eulogy but I didn’t want a lot of fuss. I just wanted a simple but lovely service and I know that’s what I will get.

I was born in Anchor Street, near the Space Centre in Leicester on the 13th July 1939, as children we always knew that area as the pumping station. I was number six of eight children of which five were boys and three were girls. We didn’t have a lot of luxurious things in those days, you accepted things as it was and never expected expensive things. One thing for sure though, we never went hungry, Dad did all sorts of jobs to earn money. In later years Mum and Dad had a little corner shop which was in what used to be the front room. They kept that until they retired, but sadly retirement only lasted a month for them both as Dad had a massive heart attack and passed away suddenly. Mum only lived for two years after that.

Before all that happened, I met Keith and we were married on March 7th 1959 and four years later we had Andrew and four years later Jonathan came along.

Keith and I were together for 57 years and a huge part of me went with him when he passed away. Now we will be together

be a friend. Your friendship and support have been an immense comfort to me since Keith passed away. To live within a community like Thurmaston has been a privilege because there is always someone out there who really cares.

Never let that community spirit die and thank you all for being our friends.

Well folks I think the time has come for me to close now because I am in danger of going on for too long and that is what I didn’t want to happen. So, God bless, look after each other always and remember I love you all.

I can honestly say that most of these years were happy ones but as you can imagine some were sad. As these years drifted by you suddenly find yourself reaching retirement and beyond with two sons, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Children are a joy in your life so make the most of them as they grow up all too soon and develop their own lives. If our children find half the happiness that Keith and I shared then they will have a wonderful life.

Through Andrew and Jonathan and their involvement in the activities in our community we have met some wonderful people. I would like to thank everyone who is here today because if you are, you must

Covid-19 Wall Hanging To acknowledge the pandemic, which was an unprecedented experience, some members of the community have made a Covid-19 wall hanging, which is made up of 25 squares that have been created depicting their individual Covid pandemic lockdown experiences. The wall hanging will be on display at Elizabeth Park and leaflets explaining the squares by the people who made them will be available to give you more information about the inspiration and thoughts of the people that created the artwork.

Plant a tree for the Jubilee The Council is applying for the Woodland Trust scheme 'Plant a tree for the Jubilee' which would enable us to plant a small copse in the top corner of Elizabeth Park. If the application for the free trees is successful, the copse would be called Jubilee Copse to commemorate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next year. The Council does not like to remove trees and these trees will replace 3 trees that have had to be removed in that area.

3G pitches The 3G pitches at Elizabeth Park are a popular facility, which have been in place for over ten years now, but as they are well used they are in need of a bit of investment to keep them in good condition. The Council has already installed new goal posts and is arranging for a pitch renovation to be carried out. We are also planning to install ball stop netting, to stop the balls going into the Bowls Green, which is good for all the users of Elizabeth Park. Hopefully this work will

Leicester and District Ramblers

As the country has moved progressively out of lockdown we have more or less succeeded in reinstating our full programme of short, half day and all day walks and both existing and new members have been turning out with growing confidence. I personally recently sampled one of our Thursday morning walks, this was a shade under six miles. The expectations that I had for this walk, from Ab Kettleby in this case, were all met including being well led by one of our many experienced walk leaders, Paul. The bonus on this occasion was the prospect of sharing a well earned lunch at the villages Sugar Loaf Inn with fellow walkers, a timely reminder that quite apart from the obvious health and fitness aspects that the sociability and camaraderie of rambling remains intact!

We continue to experience and indeed welcome newcomers to our ranks, many new faces have come across us via our Facebook page. Here you can find out a little more about us. These have traditionally taken place on the third Sunday of the month with an early departure from the Premier Inn, Braunstone Lane East. The venues were always outside of the county and included the Cotswolds and The Peak District.

Across the high summer when we are afforded longer hours of daylight then we have gone even further afield as far as Norfolk, Shropshire and the Forest of Dean. We cover all abilities with an A, B and C walk of various distances and paces. Traditionally a highlight of all the rambles is a post-walk Sunday Lunch at a pub local to the walk area. We are currently surveying our existing membership to gauge not just the appetite for reintroducing the coach trips but if they need to change format (e.g. return to Leicester at the conclusion of the walk, changing the pick up or indeed the frequency of the trips). Local litter picking group continue to clear up.

Syston and Thurmaston Litter Wombles are doing their next litter pick on 10th October at 11am. They will meet at Fosse Way, LE7 to litter pick along the verges from the traffic lights at wood yard to the ‘Gate Hangs Well’ pub. All equipment including hi-vis will be provided. Martine said, “There’s no pressure to litter pick, just join in when you can! Use common senses at all times, never take any risks near water or roads. Other than that, enjoy!”

Happy 10th birthday, Little Green Deli!

In October the Little Green Deli on Melton Road will be 10 years old.

Whether you want a cooked breakfast, a burger, salad box or slice of cake, there’s something for every palate at the Little Green Deli.

Lisa and Jane took over the Little Green Deli which was previously located outside the garden centre. Before that, Lisa ran a flower shop on Hinckley Road. Jane has recently retired from the Little Green Deli.

The outside was painted green and over the years, the menu expanded to include sausage rolls, pies and much more..

Customers appreciate the Little Green Deli being open in all weather, right on their doorstep.

In particular, during the coronavirus pandemic and various lockdowns the Little Green Deli has been busier than ever. It is increasingly popular with walkers and the outside hatch has been preferred as we’ve all been careful to keep risks down.

Favourites include pulled pork and stuffing baguettes on Fridays. The weirdest filling that has ever been asked for was tuna mayo and fried eggs!

The Little Green Deli will soon be expanding the menu to include stews and chillis for the winter.

Parking on Pavements

A couple of months ago I was sent an anonymous letter along with 12 photos of vehicles parked on the path. The first two photos I will share with you are commercial vehicles, and I agree they are not parked on the road. However, they could have

been and quite legally. But if they had done, they would have caused a problem for other vehicles using the roads and in these two incidences they were not blocking the path.

Parking fully or halfway on the pavement is more than inconvenient it can intimidate some people, particularly the visually impaired making them anxious to leave their homes. Pushchairs and mobility scooters have no alternative but to step out on to the road. It is not a criminal offence to park on the pavement (apart from Heavy Goods Vehicles). However, it is an offence to drive on the pavement.

Confusing? I think so.

Pavement parking is banned throughout the 32 London boroughs and the City of London unless there is a sign that specifically permits it. If councils wish to fine people for parking on a pavement, they must erect signs pointing out the restrictions. A total ban on pavement parking in Scotland came in to force at the start of the year and the Welsh government has set up a taskforce to consider whether a total ban is wanted. Despite possible changes in the law narrow roads and a rising population of vehicle drivers means a total ban is unlikely. As to the anonymous

At the start of the summer holidays, I was made aware that some children from the Barratts estate were getting together the makings of a den.

However, the den is now abandoned and unfortunately the children that created the hideaway have made no attempt to clear up the mess and quite rightly the residents nearby are not happy with the eyesore it has become. Viewing the site on 4th September, it looks as though fly-tipping has been added to the debris. I am all for children being active and creating their own space, but they also need to take responsibility for clearing up their own mess when they tire of it. Parents also have a responsibility in making that happen. I have asked Charnwood to clear the rubbish ASAP but of course that comes at a cost to us all.

A glorious display on the Dales

As I was cutting through Ivydale on the way home after a meeting at Thurmaston Community Centre I had to stop and reverse after glimpsing a front garden that was not only uplifting to the soul but a riot of colour and a joy to behold. I am a keen gardener, but you would not know it looking at my front garden as it is a barren paved car park that only boasts an unimaginative basket and bay tree either side of my front door. However, Mark and Caroline Humphrey of 49 Ivydale Road have combined the practicality of parking the car with a visual display of plants that are displayed with care and obvious pleasure. I see so many uncared-for front gardens, full of weeds and rubbish of one type or another so thank you for cheering me up as well as the little girl that was passing and commented to her companion 'This is always a lovely garden'.

Harrisons Hope

Harrison’s Hope has been set-up in memory of Harrison Hassall.

Baby Harrison was born in January 2019 but sadly, aged two days, he died of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), on Leicester’s neonatal unit.

Since their loss, parents Hollie and Ashley set-up ‘Harrison's Hope’, a local organisation supporting bereaved families and raising funds for Leicester’s neonatal unit, in memory of baby Harrison to connect with other bereaved families who have suffered the loss of a baby.

Calling all knitters Harrison’s Hope are looking for knitters who would be willing to help them to supply knitted items that will be distributed to families that have suffered the loss of a baby.

9th-15th October is Baby Loss Awareness week Harrisons Hope will be doing a annual wave of light on the 15th and would like to invite everyone to light a candle in memory of Harrison and all angel babies taken too soon.

Friendly magpie

Residents of Thurmaston have been taking to social media to share stories of a friendly magpie that has been getting up to mischief.

Freddie (pictured below) was initially delighted to receive a visit but he was later upset when the magpie stole his Lego!

Named ‘Kevin’ by Thurmaston residents, the magpie visits gardens, homes and the retail park.

Although we enjoy his visits, he really needs rehabilitation as this behaviour is not normal for a wild bird. Residents are hoping to arrange for a rescue centre to collect him next time he flies into a safe and contained area.

Charnwood Nursery and Preschool have launched their new curriculum with a dedicated Environment Day. A group of children, parents and staff walked to Watermead Country Park to learn about their local environment and litter-pick. The shared a story about the pitfalls of plastic and started a compost box.

The new curriculum is designed to make an impact and show the children how to love and respect the world they live in.

Practice Based Manager, Chloe said, “Our Environment Day, as part of our new curriculum aimed to create awe and wonder amongst the children, we have a heavy emphasis on the world around us and a love for the environment.”

September marked the start of the new season for Thurmaston DPC FC and many things to be excited about.

The first team earned a double promotion and find themselves in the Premier Division of the Leicester & Charnwood Sunday football league this season. The first time the club has ever been in the highest division, which shows just how much the club have evolved as they head into their 5th season. The reserves stay in The Kenneth J. West Division 4 and hope to do well this season. The club have as ever brought in new faces for the new season as other players make way. The club would like to welcome Harry Caunt, Karl Duncan, Joe Dyer, Reece Morgan, Cal Pawley, Niall Stafford, Phil Warrington, Callum Hollis and Ford Taylor to the club.

First week of fixtures gave the first team a comfortable 2-0 victory to give them the first 3 points of the season. The reserve sadly were defeated but bounced back the following week to win 8-2 at home against Kings united.

What a way to start their season!

A thrilling first game away from home saw the ladies head into their first ever competitive game. They scored first early on with a goal from Collette Gardner before Marlborough brought it back before half time. The ladies took the lead again in the second half and were 3-2 up with only minutes to go as Marlborough equalised to make it 3-3. A minute to go an Thurmaston broke and Jadie Stones scored her third goal of the game to complete her hat-trick and secure all 3 points. The first ever competitive win for the team!

St Margaret's Bowls Tour

There was a very special atmosphere to our to Weston-super-Mare in August.

I think it was all to do with the fact that Covid has kept us all cooped up for so long. The summer bowls tour, which has resumed after a year's break, has become a regular feature in the St Margaret's calendar.

The weather for the five days was warm, cloudy, dry but very windy!

We played against three local clubs, the first one being Clevedon (pictured). We spent a pleasant morning exploring this fine little town which has a wonderful Victorian seaside pier. Their bowls team is equally fine and though we put up a good fight, we did lose the match.

The second match was played at Clarence Park on the south side of Weston.

Unusually, this club has 3 bowling greens. Again, we were confronted with a strong opposition and lost the match but not by a wide margin.

Our final day started with a trip through the towering Chedder Gorge to the beautiful and historic City of Wells, where there was plenty to see and do. We then drove on to Winscombe where we played our third match. I am pleased to say, on this occasion we had a resounding win! It has to be said of course that all of the matches were played in a most friendly atmosphere and our host clubs made us very welcome.

The Tour Championship award for the overall highest scoring player went to Mary Linnett, and we raised £200 during the tour in aid of the RNLI, our President's chosen charity.

The first week involves only

running for 1 minute at a time and walking in-between to gradually build fitness and making the course achievable from the start. The friendly run leaders will support you every week to help you complete the 10 weeks. You will need a good pair of trainers and comfortable sports clothing.

End of an era

Recently some of the Leaders at 78th Leicester Scout Group have received National Scouting awards.

have over 100 years of Scouting between them! Tigger aka Danielle Eaton (Susie's stepdaughter), will be taking over as Wednesday Beaver Scout Leader and will continue to build and take the colony forward on the excellent foundation Susie has achieved.

Many boys have passed through both Beaver sections at the 78th (Wednesday & Friday), and have been very proud to watch them have fun, learn, grow in confidence and progress through the Scouting movement. Some even return to the group/section with their own children so they can start on their own adventure.

So we all would like to say a huge heartfelt "Thank you Tarka", for all the fun and laughter, unconditional support and friendship.

And don't forget Susie.....if you are ever at a loose end and would like to come down for an 'hour' the door will always be open!!

Wednesday Beaver Scout Leaders Tigger, Bambi, Millie and Pooh

After dedicating over half her life to the Scouting movement, Tarka (aka Susie Pickering) has recently made the difficult decision to step down and 'retire' as Wednesday Beaver Scout Leader at the 78th Leicester (1st Thurmaston) Scout Group.

Scout and Guiding has played a huge part in Susie's life, from joining Brownies, Guides, Ventures and then becoming a Leader. Susie was a member of the Scout & Guide band playing lead drum, and has taken part in many major events and competitions, travelling all over the country and Europe.

Susie's enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to Scouting has been second to none and is an amazing leader. Susie is married to Carl (Scout Leader and ex Group Scout Leader), full time mum and how she has managed to fit work in the mix is beyond us all! Anyone connected with Scouting will know and totally appreciate all the hours and hard work that go into running a successful section and group, all the family have been involved helping and supporting in some way.... 35 years is a huge achievement!

It all began back in 1986 when Susie took over the Beaver Scout section from Maria Whitfield. Shortly after Susie took over she asked Ruth Atkins to help out and she has been there with her ever since.

Crafty Stitchers, Leicestershire

Meet together, enjoy each other's company and our hobby of embroidery.

At our meetings we have stitch afternoons, learning new techniques or new stitches. We also have speakers telling of their journey through stitch or maybe their travels abroad or how they had come across a particular idea and had made it their life's work, bringing with them some of their beautiful work to show us.

During lockdown we have had some very interesting Zoom meetings and have completed two joint projects, making quilts for the 'Linus Charity' We meet from 2.00-4.30 on the second Saturday each month at Braunstone West Social Centre, St Mary's Avenue (off Braunstone Lane), Leicester, LE3 3FT If you enjoy being creative, like any sort of stitch and would like to join us, you would be most welcome. 24 Hour Charity Bike Ride Raises over £4,500!

Pure Table Top, a Leicestershire-based specialist supplier of ceramics and glass who work with retailers and brands in the UK and around the world, have completed their latest charity fundraiser supporting Alex's Wish.

Speaking about their latest challenge, Claire Glover, Account Manager at Pure Table Top said, "The Pure Table Top team has grown to 24 so we thought it would be a great idea to have a 24-hour event which the whole team could get involved with.

We work with customers and suppliers in every time zone so a live link gave everyone a chance to log on at any time and support our team. Our beautiful office is based in a former cycling café so a static bike seemed the perfect idea and would allow the team to sit down and raise money at the same time! We are quite a competitive bunch though so we really went for it and our surprise winner was Ian who covered 34km in his 1-hour slot!

"This is the latest of our fundraising efforts. Our efforts have been helped hugely by our setting up the Pure Table Top Alex's Wish committee at the beginning of 2021 which has helped us to focus our fundraising efforts and the numbers have soared!"

The challenge brought in a total of £4,524.58. Other fundraising events have included running sample sales throughout

Emma Hallam, Founder and CEO of Alex's Wish commented on the achievement saying, "Pure Table Top come up with such interesting and varied ideas and I can't believe the amount they raise for us. A huge thank you to the whole team for their ongoing support. The money they have raised will go straight into urgently required clinical research, clinical trials and increasing clinical trial capacity with a view to delaying symptoms of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy by several years effectively buying time for us to find that vital cure."

Another serious accident

Did you see the recent accident at the roundabout near Asda and the retail park?

We've received this photo from a witness who said, "People go a bit too fast and layout catches people out on the roundabout."

One of the drivers involved took to social media to thank people who stopped to help, “I was involved in an accident at Thurmaston Roundabout this morning and was helped out of my car by people that had stopped at the scene. I'm not sure if they were local, one got me out of my car, and a nurse passing by stopped and helped until the ambulance and fire service arrived. I would just want to say ‘Thank you’ for stopping and helping, I am extremely grateful for your help, and recovering at home, but the car is a right off. Again - thank you!!”

Mick Warden sadly passed away, aged 67, with his children by his side on 29th August 2021.

Born on 13th October, 1953, Mick grew up in Ratby and moved to Thurmaston abut 40 years ago.

Mick was a bricklayer and worked hard.

He was well known around Thurmaston Village for many years and will be greatly missed.

He leaves children Michelle, Nicola, and Jamie; and grandchildren Chloe, Kacey, Finn and Ollie.

His funeral is on 29th September at 1.30pm taking place at Gilroes Cemetery.

Our condolences to Mick’s family.

New Barkby WI

Mrs Shirley Franklin, President, welcomed members and visitors to New Barkby WI's September's meeting.

‘Jerusalem’ was sung first, then business matters ensued. Face masks are worn when moving around the room, but may be removed when seated. The institute has purchased a first aid kit and designated first aider is Kerstyn Fryman.

Guest speaker, Mr Matthew Warburton, from Ashby-De-La-Zouch gave a talk titled, ‘The Road to Aluminium art, from Bugatti's to Butterflies’.

From a young age, Mr Warburton became interested in making mudguards for motorcycles and making panels. After

graduating in engineering at university he then studied Product Aluminium. He brought along a variety of items he created including butterflies on stems, part of a London skyline and the framed outline view of the UK. His daughter also makes butterflies from drink cans. Items were available to be purchased after the talk.

The October meeting will be on Wednesday, 6th at 7.15pm. Carolyn Boulter will be organising and demonstrating patchwork. All meetings take place at Syston Community Centre.

Visitors are welcome.

31st October, Leicester Half Marathon The Run Leicester Half will see thousands of runners take on the 13.1 mile distance. Roads will be closed for the duration of the event and there will be plenty of entertainment. The much-loved half marathon route will start and finish at Victoria Park, heading through the city and out along Leicester’s golden mile, before looping back in via Watermead Park and Abbey Park.
