Building work on 4,500 home Thorpebury development A housebuilding consortium comprising Davidsons Homes, William Davis Homes and David Wilson Homes has now broken ground on the first phase of 574 homes, open space and infrastructure at the Thorpebury development.

Developer CEG, the landowner and the consortium recently exchanged contracts.

This phase of the development, known as Thorpebury-in-the-Limes, will provide a comprehensive mix of housing ranging from two to five bedrooms and green spaces including sports pitches, play areas, parkland and new walking and cycling routes.

Transport initiatives will also be delivered in nearby Barkby and Barkby Thorpe to

reduce speeds and make travel through the village safer.

Will Martin, area manager at CEG, explains: "Three high quality housing partners have been selected to deliver the first phase. Along with the high-quality landscaping and open space, this will ensure an exemplary and characterful development."

One of the builders is Charnwood business, William Davis Homes, already a major local employer and user of local suppliers. This includes the recruitment of Leicestershire teenagers to the company's award-winning apprenticeship scheme.

Over the course of the development which could be around 30 years, Thorpebury will deliver three distinct neighbourhoods.

Possibly related to ongoing domestic problems.

15/12 at 0300 hrs on Southdown Drive.

Attempted burglary when unknown person was disturbed trying to climb through an open downstairs window.

16/12 at 1040 hrs on Church Hill Road.

Report of male exposing himself. He was very drunk and dishevelled and was walking down the street with a can of Beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. At this time his trouser zip was undone and he was exposed. Thought to be unintended but enquiries are ongoing.

27/12 at 0455 hrs at Marks Convenience Store on Melton Road. Damage was caused to the side gate when a person tried to jemmy it open with a crowbar.

1/1 at 1230 hrs on Clayton Drive a person was arrested for public order offences and causing criminal damage to some vehicles in the street and also for assaulting a Police officer by spitting.

Award for Thurmaston woman Kashmira Singapuri has been recognised for her achievements with a WOW Award in 2021.

Women of the World (WOW Awards) were launched in 2017 to honour and recognise the valuable work of women in society. Funds raised from their annual gala dinner are donated to Healing Little Hearts, a Leicester-based international charity.

After arriving in the UK 55 years ago, speaking no English, Kashmira has gone on to accomplished much in the world of business, culture and community.

Early achievements include co-founding Darpan Arts, a garba dance group, at the age of 16 and choreographing winning routines for numerous competitions. Her love for Indian music also led her to having a decade-long career singing live shows.

During this time, Kashmira also started working as a laboratory technician at Leicester Royal Infirmary, to earn money for university. She went on to graduate at Leicester University with a Batchelors of Education, and qualified as a secondary school science teacher. Kashmira was one of only six Asian teachers in Leicester at the time.

Whilst at university, Kashmira also joined the world of television and then radio. She was the first female journalist on BBC1.

This added to a long and successful career in radio where she was one of the first three presenters on the new Centre Radio in 1981, which then became known as Sabras radio. Other stations where she worked as a presenter and a journalist include BBC Radio Leicester (starting in 1975), Hospital Radio Fox and various other temporary stations. Kashmira was very passionate about helping the local communities and hence made this a mission which she tackled through her journalistic work on radio. She also interviewed many visiting celebrities.

During her teaching career, unfortunately Kashmira faced racism from both pupils and their parents. However this only spurred her on to becoming involved with developing a multicultural education

syllabus teaming up with a leading educationalist then contributing towards a book on multicultural Britain.

Later, Kashmira went on to get married and in 1988 had a daughter. Unfortunately, the marriage came to an end and she became a single mother.

In 1994, Kashmira co-founded a body to promote science subjects to girls. The goal was to bring space science to schools in the UK to entice female interest in the subject. They raised £1 million from Cadbury's who commissioned them to take the project to Birmingham. The team travelled to Washington for a weeklong conference with American educationalists and space scientists on how this could be developed. Excitingly NASA took an interest in the programme and Kashmira was lucky enough to go behind the scenes at NASA, meet the Apollo 11 astronauts on their 25th anniversary of the moon landing and even get an invitation to the White House! The project with NASA was entitled ‘Marsville - The Cosmic Village’ (How to live on Mars) and trials were run in a variety of schools in Birmingham with a view to opening a space centre at the Cadbury's site. During the bidding process, they lost out to Leicester University, who brought the Space Centre to Leicester.

In addition to all this, Kashmira had always dreamed of having her own business and finally launched a hair and beauty salon in Belgrave.

Your Letters Relevant street names for Thorpebury Difficult though it is to get your tongue round it it is clear that some thought had gone into naming the North East of Leicester Sustainable Urban Development "Thorpebury" but it is possibly not the case when Davidsons, one of the builders of phase 1, came up with suggestions for the first street names of the new town soon to replace the green fields south of Barkby Thorpe. You'd have thought they would have chosen names that had a local ring about them perhaps referencing the old field names or historical characters connected with the area but it is hard to spot one in their list of ten that includes two suburbs of Leeds, two villages in Oxfordshire and six civil war battlefield sites, Dunbar and Edgehill being the best known but all many miles away from Leicestershire. Davidsons only suggestion with a smidgeon of a possible local reference is Thorne though I'm sure the old lamp factory was called Thorn Lighting without an e. It's more likely that Thorne is an unremarkable place near Doncaster.

Fortunately help is at hand from Barkby and Barkby Thorpe Parish Council, the local history group and BABTAG who have all decided to put on their thinking caps to offer up some more acceptable names that will help root the roads and streets of Thorpebury in the community. Surely the Pochin family who have been in the area since the 15th century and who have sold the land should be commemorated by a street name or two? Or tenant farming families like the Mounts, the Picks and the Kirks who have worked the land for generations? And how about Thomas Marshall, the son of a Barkby blacksmith who rose to be chaplain to King Charles 2nd - or more obvious names like Bradgate View?

There will be plenty of road and streets to be named as Thorpebury's 4500 houses get built and, to be fair, the builders and Charnwood council are open to suggestions. If you are reading this you are almost certainly a local so come on, let's

have your ideas to add to the mix and ensure that if we have to have Thorpebury it is firmly embedded by its street names in our part of Leicestershire.

Ongoing traffic issues at roundabout I’m writing about the congestion issues around the Thurmaston retail park area. I have set up an e-petition, made several complaints to local councillors, MPs and local authorities so would urge readers to have their say. Not enough people are going through the proper channels to complain.

The main concern is the area is already heavily congested. With the new development of 5000 houses I believe starting near the width restriction is going to add a huge demand to the area.

Church Hill bridge At least it is on a list!

Over the last 10 years there has been various work carried out on Church Hill Bridge to ease the problem of flooding.

Some suggest that it needs closing to all vehicles and lessening the dip, but I have shied away from pursuing that. The drainage gully was once behind network rails fence but since the fence was moved the gully was always accessible for maintenance.

Last year a ground survey was carried out to investigate the problem further and although the work required is on a list judging by the email below it is unlikely to be anytime soon.

Councillor Brenda Seaton ‘Engineering services team have designed a scheme for resolving the flooding problem at this location, which involves a considerable amount of new pipework diverted away from the railway embankment into a location which can be maintained by the Authority. Unfortunately, the estimated cost for these works is approximately 400k, which is considerably higher than the annual budget for flood alleviation works for the whole County (this is normally approximately 200k).

LCC have an extensive list for sites across the county which require major schemes, with each site given a priority score (based on the guidance set out in the Highway Management Efficiency Programme

documentation which takes it account road priority and if a property is being flooded), I appreciate how big an issue this is for local residents, however this scheme currently falls midway within the priority list.

We will be reporting to the commissioner for advice how the Authority would like to progress this issue and I can let you know in due course.

In the meantime, we will continue to regularly cleanse the gullies at this location, and close the road when required to ensure the safety of the travelling public’.

Bindi’s Supermarket on Lonsdale Road is being refurbished and will be relaunched as a OneStop store. OneStop is part of Tesco group and will surely be welcomed

by Thurmaston residents.

Ashwin, who has run Bindi’s Supermarket since 1987 will be retiring but he tells the Thurmaston Times that he will working part-time, helping the new owners of the store when it is relaunched after the refurbishment in February.

Birstall and District Art Society In the last issue, we reported on the Birstall and District Art Society (BADAS) Exhibition held in November. We can now confirm that the winner of the ‘best in show’ Norman Simms trophy is a Thurmaston man.

The trophy is named after the founder of the group, who in 1995 had the idea of setting up a club for the benefit of his art students and friends. The winner, John Lyons, has been a member of BADAS for three years, but this was the first time he had submitted paintings for the Exhibition. John, 62, who is a window cleaner by profession says “I could not be any more proud to be the 2021 holder of the Norman Simms trophy.

Anyone in the region can join the group. You do not have to live in Birstall.”

The ease of lockdown meant that the group were able to return to their usual activities: Friday painting sessions, courses of art classes and demonstration evenings held on the second Tuesday of the

month at the PalmerTomkinson Centre, Cedars Academy, Birstall from 79pm. The next demonstration will be held on 8 February with artist Chris Tkacz doing a landscape/seascape in oils.

John says, “I would highly recommend the Group to anyone wishing to pursue their art, especially those whose clubs have closed, also junior members.

Ceri Dupree returns to Thurmaston The fabulous Ceri Dupree made a triumphant return to Thurmaston after two years away with his brilliant oneman show.

A sell-out crowd at Silverdale Community Centre were treated to a glittering array of costumes, and a bellyful of laughter as the "Magician in High-hells" ran through some of his world-renowned impressions.

But it gets better, because Ceri is back in Thurmaston, back at Silverdale, with his brand-new, never-before-seen, show.

Festive fun Beat the winter blues with this look back at Christmas festivities across the area.

The last issue of the Thurmaston Times was a little earlier than usual in order to advertise the various Christmas events happening across the area. Let’s take a look at the highlights.

Wreake Valley Rotary Club The Christmas period is an important time for Wreake Valley Rotary Club members and volunteer helpers including the Good Gym group. It is one of their busiest periods for fundraising.

The weather in December was kind on the twelve evenings of collecting with our charity Santa Sleigh except for rain in Birstall on the last night.

They also held collections at both Dunelm and Asda and organised their inaugural Christmas fancy dress themed charity run, the ‘Watermead Winter Warmer’.

Club President Graham Packwood (pictured below) commented, "We are very grateful to the public, our volunteers and both supermarkets for their support

during this important time. Decisions on the allocation of funds to charitable causes including Rainbows Hospice will be made by the end of February and will be widely publicised. We take great care to ensure all monies raised are distributed as wisely and fairly as possible. Many thanks to all concerned."

Lights Up Uncertainty and ever-changing restrictions throughout 2021 made it very difficult to plan the annual Lights Up event. It went ahead as a smaller event on 5th December. Santa switched the lights on at the Memorial Hall, with a barbeque outside and St Michael’s and All Angel’s church was also open for refreshments.

Thurmaston Scout and Guide band performed some festive tunes. They also put on a Christmas Concert on 12 December (see page 24).

Understandably, Thumaston residents were disappointed that the event did not have the usual stalls, fairground attractions and entertainment but they all agreed that it marked an important step closer to normality.

David I Hopes Back due to popular demand and with an even better sleigh, David I Hopes arranged for Santa to visit Thurmaston in December.

It was a lovely sight, complete with snow and regular updates of the route on Facebook. The Thurmaston Times received this letter from Mrs Sheila Taylor: On the night Santa's sleigh was visiting The Dales in December, I went with my great granddaughter Alysia, to follow him around the street on the Dales.

Unfortunately, I had a bad fall stepping up onto the pavement. I ended up with a big bump on my forehead and quite a bit of bleeding from my cut. A lady and her daughter came to my rescue and walked me back home. They then took my great granddaughter to see the rest of Santa's journey.

Then a couple of days later I had a big, beautiful flower arrangement from David I Hopes.

Please thank my escorts and the David i Hopes for their kindness.

Hoping it will all happen next year without any hiccups (that's Santa's sleigh of course!)

Love is in the air In the last issue of the Thurmaston Times we heard about the sad story of the swans at John Merrick lake.

The Thurmaston Times is pleased to report that the male swan, known locally as Sashin, has found a new mate.

Unfortunately some of the cygnets died and then Sashin was seen fighting.

However, the next day, the male swan was seen with a female swan - just in time for Valentine’s Day! You may be aware that there are cases of bird flu in the area.

The authorities are monitoring the situation closely but many of the usual swan centres are closed to prevent the spread.

Please report any ill or deceased swans. Do not touch any birds and avoid their droppings.

Sharing a Valentine’s moment

Harrison’s Hope Harrison’s Hope has been set-up in memory of Harrison Hassall.

Baby Harrison was born in January 2019 but sadly, aged two days, he died of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), on Leicester’s neonatal unit.

Since their loss, parents Hollie and Ashley set-up ‘Harrison's Hope’, a local organisation supporting bereaved families, in memory of baby Harrison to connect with other bereaved families who have suffered the loss of a baby.

Professional Lady Gardener

GARDEN with Helen This is our regular feature by local gardener Helen Osborne who guides us through the seasons with hints and tips for our gardens.

It's the start of the year and for me I can't wait to get outside in my garden, with the days getting longer, the sound of my faithful robin who follows me when I am busy in my garden or yours.

I always change at least one part of my garden every year, even if just moving pots around the patio or planting different plants. It gives me something to look forward to during the year. This year I am going to add two cold frames to my potting area. I never seem to have enough space to grow plants. I can't wait.

So, grab your coat, pad and pen - head outside and get cracking in your garden.

One of the first jobs is to remove any debris that has fallen over the winter winds. Take any leaves that are on top of the new shoots of the perennials that are just starting to grow from the base of the plant. This will help the plant to grow healthier and quicker and allow you to see it better when working on the border.

If you have a new garden, this is the most exciting thing, when you have to wait to find out what is going to shoot up in your garden, and then to add some of your favourite plants.

For winter flowering shrubs like the winter flowering Jasmin, this has a yellow star shaped flowers from November until March, can be grown as a standard shrub or a climber. The flowers begin to turn brown, and the new shoots start to grow back, using a pair of secateurs, cut back the old shoots before the new shoots begin to grow back too much, remove any dead growth at the bottom of the plant, and retrain if growing as a climber against a fence or trellis. Then sprinkle a handful of a fertilizer like Growmore, work into the surface with a hand fork - this will encourage healthier growth and to flower more at the end of this year.

Prune the shrub Buddleia, or Lavateria.

Both these can reach 6ft in a year, flower from late spring till right into mid-autumn. I cut mine back now to about 2ft, just above a growing bud, leaving at least two or three shoots above the soil level. If we

have a late frost and it catches the top growing bud, remove the dead part of the stem and the plant will grow back from further down the stem.

Now is the time to start tidying the lawn, when the grass is dry enough to walk on.

Remove any fallen tree branches first, then cut and redefine the edge of the lawn. If you want to change the shape of the lawn now is good while the edge is not covered by any overhanging plants.

Then mow the lawn at a slightly higher setting than you would in the summer.

Just by cutting the tips of the grass encourages the blades of grass to grow thicker and will be a healthier and greener lawn.

An ideal, cheaper way of getting more plants for your garden is to grow your own. Sowing seeds is easy, and inexpensive. All you need is a plastic container with drainage hole on the bottom, a piece of glass or clear plastic or perspex, fresh multipurpose compost, and a small greenhouse, cold frame, or windowsill. Read the instructions on the packet of seeds, water and wait for the seeds to germinate in a week or so and grow them on.

Revisting a memory A well-known Thrummy lad, a young Pete McGowan (third from left, middle row), along with his team mates, became County Champions - the best under 14 team in Leicestershire in 1968.

Thurmaston resident, Albert Newton, shared this photo with us back in 2007. He asked the Thurmaston Times to put out an appeal.

Albert Newton celebrates 100th birthday Well-known local WW2 veteran Albert Newton celebrated his 100th birthday with a surprise party at the Top House pub on 2nd January.

Jo and the team at the Top House heard that Albert was turning 100 and arranged a party with a singer Kerry Jean, a cake and lots of food for all.

Albert was astounded when he walked in and saw everyone. He was expecting his family and a few mates, Fantastic fruitcake not a pub jamcake celebrating packed full of Albert’s hobby people.

Albert was born on Bond Street in Leicester on 2nd January, 1922. He was the eldest of five children. Albert’s sister, Eileen has wished him a happy birthday on page 4. Next were brothers Ray and John and sister Margaret.

Albert went to Belgrave Road School where he played rubgby.

He got his driving licence, simply for being able to drive an electric van forwards and backwards but soon got a job driving a lorry but was a little heavy on the clutch.

In 1941 Albert volunteered for the RAF when aged just 19, he signed up at Ulverscroft Road in Leicester.

During his service, Albert visited Mombassa, Bombay, Bengal and Burma.

Albert was awarded the Burma Star along with his service medals.

Over the years. Albert has worked many jobs including as an electrician. He did once refuse a job in the boot and shoe trade as he was worried about the impact on his health. Albert had pneumonia as a

child and there was no health and safety in the leather industry at that time.

Albert and his wife Jean were married for over 70 years and Albert surrounded by received a card his balloons and cards, from the Queen including one from ‘Liz’ on their Platinum Anniversary. The couple wed on 5th July 1946 at Leicester Registry Office, Pocklington’s Walk.

Albert and Jean moved to Thurmaston approximately 30 years ago, initially to Weeklies Road.

They met at the marketplace in Leicester and married when Albert was 24.

Unfortunately Jean passed away in November 2016 but Albert’s loving Albert and wife Jean family support him in 2015 and he is still able to live independently.

Albert tells the Thurmaston Times that he still enjoys his favourite drink, a single gold watch (Scotch on the rocks) and placing a bet on the horses.

Daughter Sandra and son-in-law Alan Lakin said, “Thank you to everyone for his party a the Top House - he was over the moon.”

Jean Mitchison - Wife, Mum, Gran and Great Gran A tribute from Mark and Debbie.

A lady with a big heart, a large personality, and a determined mind.

Jean was born on the 1st of March 1930, and grew up in Wigston. One of her first jobs was delivering bread for Frears and Black on her bicycle, she really enjoyed this job, and would cycle miles every day.

Jean and her best friend Peggy Power loved dancing and would go to local dances regularly. It would be at a local dance where she was to meet the love of her life George who she went on to marry on 29th September 1956.

Jean and George didn't want to buy any house, they wanted a life-long home and decided to buy a plot of land in Beacon Avenue, Thurmaston. It was here, where they built their own bungalow. This was a huge undertaking at the time, and I can recall Mum, telling me how George had originally built the back door to the side of the property. She had asked him why he had done this? As she had wanted the door on the back wall of her kitchen, this was something George quickly rectified.

Jean and George were blessed with two sons Mark and Stuart and their family was complete. Their love of family holidays took them on many adventures. Cornwall being one of their favourite places to visit.

practically everything but the kitchen sink and setting off in the middle of the night.

Sadly, George became unwell and despite two kidney transplants passed away in 1985.

Jean Filled her heart with family and friends. A big part of her life was the Royal British Legion, where she served on the committee for many years. She used to call bingo at weekends along with being a member of the women's section.

Jean was also a big supporter of the 78th Thurmaston scout and guide band, travelling on the supporter's bus going to many competitions. I can hear her now shouting mashy, mashy with her wooden rattle with complete pride.

Over the years Jean helped to raise money for the poppy appeal which was very dear to her heart. She organised a

yearly show at the Thurmaston Working Men's Club where she sourced different acts to perform. One of which were a Spice Girl tribute act that her grand-daughters Laura and Beth performed in. She would spend months gathering jokes, some a bit naughty which she would include whilst comparing the show.

Jean loved spending time with her family and taught all her grandchildren how to play cards and dominos as games night were a large part of our family tradition.

Laura Beth and Ryan remember fondly of all the times they spent at Grans house playing offices, recreating Stars in your eyes, with the use of the lounge curtains, sitting on the back of her armchair putting her hair in rollers and especially all the weekends Gran took them to the Legion.

Jean was the head of our family, she was always happy and would always speak her mind, and if she was to ask for something, we all had to hop to it!

We are already missing the telephone calls, hearing jeans voice leaving a message such as: " I want one Spanish onion, 4 green bananas make sure they are green, 3 slices of ham not too thin." How we would chuckle.

The last few days have been the hardest days we have had to bear, and although our loss is great...

Jean the Cream was full of love Proud as could be, of all her family And now at peace we love you so much. xx

I would like to begin by wishing everyone a Happy New Year and good health as we begin 2022.

Parish precept The Parish precept will increase by 2.09%.

We have worked extremely hard to keep it as low as possible.

The precept is the amount of money needed by the Parish Council to run its facilities; Elizabeth Park and grounds, Memorial Hall and grounds, Jubilee Park and Pavilion, Silverdale Park and Thurmaston Cemetery along with staff wages and other costs such as festive lighting and supporting events.

The proposed precept was put to the vote and accepted by Parish Councillors.

More vandalism Last year, Thurmaston Parish Council spent over £2540 on repairs following vandalism. This included the damaged fence at Elizabeth Park and replacing the gates at the Jubilee playing fields after they were both terribly vandalised.

Unfortunately, vandalism continues to be a problem in Thurmaston, most recently there was a break-in at Memorial Hall.

Thankfully there was no damage inside but the cost of repairs and increased security adds up. This will include the installation of drop-down retractable bollards and introduction of opening hours for the car park - which will also deter other forms of antisocial behaviour.

Queen’s Jubilee ‘do’ The planning of Thurmaston’s celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee continue.

We hope to have events over the whole, extended weekend (Thursday 2nd Sunday 5th June) in line with the national plans www.royal.uk/platinum-jubileecentral-weekend.

Ideas for Thurmaston include entertainment, competitions and a ‘street party’ style picnic.

National and international celebrations include a Platinum Pudding competition, Trooping of the Colour, lighting of over 1,500 beacons across the Commonwealth, services of thanksgiving, live concerts, pageants, street parties and much more.

Trollies, trollies everywhere -all belonging to Asda!

About a year ago I discovered an App called TrolleyWise. A site where I could report abandoned trolleys and get them collected. Asda at Thurmaston has withdrawn from that service and now we are plagued by discarded trolleys throughout the village. It seems the locking system has failed due to the batteries not being replaced. I visited the new store manager Mitch who, whilst listening to my complaint, was totally unsympathetic to the problem and made it clear that the problem was that the residents of Thurmaston

should have more pride in their community. Putting the blame squarely on the residents of Thurmaston, their customers. Mitch did say he would look in to getting them collected but as of the 17th January they are still littering our streets.

Why has Asda Stores Ltd pulled out of the TrolleyWise service? Money? Or just disrespect towards their customers?

Report from Cllr. Brenda Seaton - Thurmaston Parish Councillor, Charnwood Borough Councillor for Thurmaston and County Councillor for Thurmaston Ridgemere (incorporating Barkby, Barkby Thorpe, Beeby, South Croxton & Thurmaston)

Community areas who do they belong to? Who is responsible?

Several developments in Thurmaston have been built with community car parks. When these areas were initially built or landscaped where done so to make the area look more appealing, easier to sell.

However, who looks after these areas when the developer has walked away? The largest example of this type of development is off Colby Drive, another far smaller development off Barkby Thorpe Lane and a small development off Eastfield Road.

Blount Road Estate Built in the early 70's this Jelson built development consists of 8 roads all leading off Blount and bounded by a rail line and Colby Drive.

The houses do not follow one style throughout the development or size and have a mix of different types of front gardens. Some are lawned and open with on road parking or parking to the rear, others are walled with their own driveways.

A few share an attractive grassed central area to the front of their properties that is maintained by Charnwood with rear access and parking accessed by a narrow tarmacked track.

Throughout the development there are communal car parks, either small private areas to the rear of a few properties or, in the case of Clayton Drive, a huge area that, because of its size is hard to manage.

There are also driveways leading to open parking spaces and a rail embankment planted with trees. A wall was built around the car parks which by the late 90's had collapsed leaving the bricks in piles around the edges, spilling out over the car park.

Out of sight, out of mind When the estate was built, Jelson's were required to erect an acoustic fence made up of thicker than average wooden vertical slats which was to lessen the noise from the very busy train line.

This fence was in addition to Network Rail's metal safety fence that then created a 4m wide area, where wildlife could flourish unimpeded by man. However, residents and no doubt outsiders, over the years decided this hidden space was brilliant for fly tipping. Sofas, beds,

wardrobes, garden waste plus household waste was thrown over. At the same time another fence was erected creating yet another dumping ground that ran along the once narrow and intimidating footpath from Humberston Lane leading to Clayton Drive.

Over the years both fences were vandalised, revealing the trash, and bringing down the whole area.

A project that would take years When I became a parish councillor, 18 years ago I resolved to help this area become an attractive amenity for the residents. First thing was to remove all the bricks littering the car park areas. I contacted Raynesway Properties who very kindly volunteered to help remove most of the fallen walls for free. Next, I enlisted the help of the Princes Trust to remove the old fence running along the footpath leading from Humberstone Lane. The ground was cleared, rotavated and seeded and added to the mowing schedule. The project then was to remove the most visible stretch of dilapidated fencing. Around 12 years ago I persuaded Charnwood to remove the fencing. Since then the rubbish has been removed, the land scrapped, levelled reseeded and finally planted with hundreds of hedging whips, that given time will cover the railway fencing with native hedging.

Moving along the rail line to tidy up Early last year I applied for funding to remove tons of hard core and dumped furniture, carpets and domestic waste that had been dumped in and around the wooded area farther along the rail line.

Because the waste had been bagged up and with the contents hidden, I could not ask volunteers to clear it as there could be broken glass, drug paraphernalia or the chance of disturbing rodents attracted by the food waste scattered around.

Therefore, I applied for funding from Charnwood members grant and engaged a professional groundwork company to clear tons of hardcore and rubbish that blighted the area.

More to do this summer I have met with Charnwood's arboriculturist (tree expert) who has agreed that some of the trees need removing or thinning. Next, I would like to tackle the rubbish dumped down the gulley next to the rail line and create a safe footpath to Kiln Drive . This may involve a block and tackle or just lots of enthusiasm, muscle, and a great deal of

What is wrong with people?

A week before Christmas I went to take some pictures for this article and ended up litter picking.

A vacuum cleaner, a massive pink settee, kitchen bin, rocking horse, bags of garden waste, countless lager cans. WHY? Most of those items can be put in the black bin even the garden waste if not to much. The rocking horse could have been broken down to fit as well as the vacuum cleaner.

The settee plus two other items would have been taken away by Charnwood for £20. But in the end, we all pay towards the cost of Serco having to collect the dumped rubbish. So, in the end we all have paid to have the pink settee removed.

Absent landlords or unresponsive property agents Landlords add to the problem by not inspecting or maintaining their property. If you are in rented accommodation and you think your landlord is not doing what they should please contact me as I may be able to help.

Land Register I am currently asking Jelson's who is responsible for certain areas. I would advise all residents to enquire with land registry (cost around £6) where your parking spot is, to see if you are responsible for the path at the rear of your property or who would be legally responsible for a fall down an inspection chamber?

Library raffle Thurmaston Community Library is ran entirely by volunteers and relies on your support to keep going.

A Christmas raffle took place in December to raise much-needed funds for the library. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets.

Two hampers jam-packed full of goodies were kindly donated by Hum Sath Sewa, a local Hindu organisation.

The winning tickets belonged to Helen Pascual and Sue Spalding. We hope you enjoyed your hampers!

Asda token scheme funding The Library and the Community Centre have both benefited by Asda's green token scheme over the past 6 months.

Both received cheques for £200.

Each year, the Asda Foundation invests over £1.4m to more than 4000 good causes through Green Token Giving. In store Green Token Giving activity was paused due to Covid restrictions but continued online.

These funds are to be used for the upkeep of the library and each of the social groups who meet every week will benefit from the Community Centre cheque.

We are very fortunate to have a very good relationship with Asda and value the support they give to us and other local good causes.

Bilingual children’s books now available Did you know that you can now access bilingual children’s books at Thurmaston Community library?

Following a request from a library user, the volunteers at Thurmaston library arranged for several children’s books in both Gujarati and English (pictured below) to be sent to Thurmaston.

These books help Asian families keep their language alive and also supports bonding between grandparents and grandchildren.

Each page has both English and Gujarati wording. Adults and children can take it in turns to read, practising and sharing pronounciation.

Classics such as the Pied Piper of Hamelin are available alongside newer, original stories.

Take a look next time you visit and feel free to speak to the volunteers if you’re interested in other languages.

Thurmaston men push for silverware The first half of the season has put both the first team and reserves in a good position to push for silverware.

Thurmaston DPC First team find themselves with plenty of games in hand in the league which will hopefully see them finish strongly this season with there still being an outside chance of winning the premier division in their first season in the highest division.

Their JD Thomas League cup first round fixture against division 4 side Leicester AFC saw them come out with a 1-0 win in a cagy affair, playing over an hour with 10 men. Liam Doe managed to score an 80th minute winner for the foxes to see them go through to the 2nd round and faceCastle Donnington. The first team are also into the quarter final of the JD Berrington cup and face Division 1 leaders Spinney Rovers in what is expected to be a very difficult fixture, but one win away from the first semi final of the season. The first team has suffered some bad injuries at the start of this year and are looking forward to bringing the squad back together in the new year to push for silverware.

Thurmaston Lawn Bowls Club presentation evening After a fun packed season, Thurmaston Lawn Bowls Club ended the year with a celebratory awards evening and Christmas party at the Harrow Inn where an array of trophies and medals were awarded to the champions and their runners up.

2021 was a busy year, despite Covid-19. We safely played throughout the season in both league and friendly matches and enjoyed many social events too.

We are now looking forward to the new season and invite new members,

The reserves are also playing well and find themselves top of the league after starting the new year strongly. After a 17-0 victory just before the Christmas break, they returned with an 11-1 victory over Mossdale Rangers and a 10-0 victory over league rivals Broomleys. They look forward to a President's Cup Quarter final against CRL with hopes of reaching the semi final of the cup. There is a long way to go yet in the league but the squad is very hopeful of being in contention of the winners trophy come the end of the season in both the league and their cup competition.

Notwithstanding this rambling rolls on regardless! Our watchword for walking in comfort year round is "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!" This is a truism - decent boots, requisite waterproof and thermal layers ensure the pleasures of

walking in like-minded company remains constant.

As winter continues we are spared some of the more severe restrictions of last year.

On Saturday 20th November we got together as an Association for the first time in two years to hold our AGM at Newtown Linford. The committee look forward to working hard to deliver an exciting programme for the year including the return of our coach rambles.

Thurmaston Ladies keep marching on A roller coaster first season for the ladies has been full of ups and downs, but they keep getting better and better.

The highlight being a 2nd round county cup win against Division 1 side Saffron Dynamo. Their third round tie saw them drawn against Coalville Town Ravenettes who play in the East Midlands

Womens Regional Football League, a much higher level that where they currently play.

They battled hard but ended up losing 9-0 however came away with a real sense of pride and the fine margins are what cost them on the day. They learnt a lot and were in good spirits

Syston bowlers celebrate 2021 competitions success On 27th November members of Syston Bowling Club paid tribute to the winners of the 2021 series of competitions.

Club President, Derek Renshaw, welcomed members, special guests and Club Patrons, Chris Meynell and wife Cathy.

For the fifth year running, the Champion of Champions Trophy was won by a lady. On this occasion, Pauline Wright, after the game despite the loss.

This fixture was a fantastic reward for the ladies who have worked so hard this year and got a chance to test themselves against one of the best ladies teams in the county. A real honour for the club.

In the league, the ladies start the new year in 5th in the Leicester Women's League Division 2, but have 4 games in hand over the current league leaders. A strong finish to the season should see them in with a chance of promotion which would be incredible in their first

Thurmaston Scout and Guide band On Sunday 12th December 2021 the Thurmaston Marching Brass band played a Christmas concert at St Michaels and All Angels Church.

Due to the pandemic the concert was reduced in length and size of audience but this didn’t detract from the quality of music from the young people.

The music included pop tunes, festive music and audience participation. The words to songs such as Silent Night were included in the programme for the audience to sing along.

Bandmaster, Richard Warrington juggled playing, conducting and was our compère for the night. He explained that when the pandemic caused lockdown in March 2020, they had to rethink how to keep the musicians engaged. Methods included using Zoom video calls to teach one-toone.

Richard said, “Teaching a full band rehearsal with everyone in one place can be challenging normally. But to then try and teach via Zoom and do one-to-one lessons has been an interesting

experience not only for the musicians but for those of us doing the teaching.”

Paige Nuttall, who leads their tuned percussion section, was faced with the biggest challenge of all when two bandsmen Alfie Eaton and Alfie Bradley wanted to learn tuned percussion. She did a fantastic job and managed to teach numerous pieces of music. Both Alfies played at Thurmaston’s Remembrance Day parade and Alfie Eaton also played in the Christmas concert.

Inspiring the next generation During Covid-19 lockdown the Foden Brass band wrote a piece of music called Song For The Frontline to commemorate the NHS and workers at the frontline of the pandemic who were ultimately saving lives.

Thurmaston Scout and Guide band, as a member of the Traditional Youth Marching Bands Association, were asked to record videos to be added to an overall mass recording. They performed this piece at the Remembrance Parade and Christmas concert.

Life skills Did you know that the UK are world leaders in producing military bands and musicians?

In addition they are the biggest employer of professional musicians.

A career as a military musician can take you to a variety of prestigious locations and venues as well as around the world.

Thurmaston Scout & Guide band has produced some military musicians over the years. Two have been buglers and one a woodwind musician.

During lockdown Luke Warrington, a trombonist in the band, applied to the army as a bass trombonist and was successful.

He completed his basic training during the pandemic and currently resides in Portsmouth undergoing phase 2 music training in preparation to join the Band of the Welsh Guards in February next year.

The moral to this is that Scouting and Guiding can help a young person to start and also develop their chosen career.

Having the word 'Scout' or 'Guide' on your CV or resume can open doors too.

Proof that the life skills taught through a young persons time in Scouts or Guides can help steer a persons career.

In fact, a further three band members have recently made applications to join the military, two as musicians. We wish them all good luck.
