Introducing Yogi Divine Society, UK the new owners of the Old School.

YDS, UK a registered UK based charity (Charity number - 803601), is a trusted Hindu spiritual and humanitarian charitable organisation. It's a subsidiary of Yogi Divine Society that serves the global community alongside all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.

Founded in 1974 by its spiritual head His Divine Holiness Guru Hariprasad Swamiji, they operate under universal values and guidelines all religions of the world.

They provide spiritual services, cultural training and other human services like healthcare and educational activities on a secular basis to promote community development, family values enrichment, educational literacy, good-health and selfsufficiency and enable happy, peaceful and harmonious life.

Renovations started Work started on the building in May and is due to finish by the end of the year. As reported previously, the new owners have explained that the inside will be modernised - improvements include insulation, updating the kitchen, additional toilets, air conditioning and upgradating the upstairs hall.

How will the building be used?

The ethos of the Yogi Divine Society, UK is a balance of their rich Hindu tradition and focusing on youth, children and families.

The building will have many uses, not only religious but also social, women’s groups, performing arts, employability skills courses and education. Residents in Thurmaston have welcomed the new plans - they previously travelled to Belgrave to attend these events and are very happy

As a response to this we have increased our Patrols and are checking any CCTV footage to try and identify the youths involved.

We are also working closely with the schools to try and educate the pupils on expected behaviour in their communities.

Thurmaston Times distributor completes Peak District expedition

During a Friday to Sunday evening, I completed my practise expedition for the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award (D of E).

It was tough but my team and I did it! On Saturday we set off at 9.00am and we did 17km.. It took us seven housr to complete the whole track we got given.

We had dinner which we enjoyed. Late that evening we relaxed and had hot chocolate; we told jokes and shared funny memories from year 11 at De lisle.

The next morning we got up and had breakfast whilst we saw some goats, horses and stags. We then had to pack our main big bags to carry. We set off at 10am and had a much shorter track which was 12km and that took us four hours. We had lunch halfway through. We took a lot of selfies and photos over the two days.

Finally we got back to camp and handed everything in after we packed. We then caught the bus back to the lay-by outside our school and we met all our parents and

Dave Hill, local music teacher at the Roundhill Academy for 34 years is taking his well-earned retirement.

Many generations of our community, who have attended the school will have fond memories of being taught by Mr Hill and also taking part in the amazing shows and concerts he organised. At one point the choir alone took up half of the hall space!

Who can forget, amongst many others, the memorable ‘Resergum’, ‘Golden Wellies’ and ‘Flower Power’. Dave has dedicated his long career to nurturing the musical talents of the students he has taught. A walk by the music room, long after most students have returned home, often compels me to stop in their tracks to listen to the fantastic music the students are producing. Dear Thurmaston Times As I write this, the government is announcing that the wearing of face coverings is to become optional in many circumstances. However many Thurmaston residents will want to continue to wear their masks indoors and outdoors so that they can help prevent the spread of the Delta and other Covid variants. It's also likely that the statutory wearing of masks will be reintroduced as the colder months return.

As I walk around Thurmaston and elsewhere I see far more single use masks than cloth masks littering the pavements.

This not only looks nasty but it also tells me that some people just aren't aware of the impact the masks are having on the environment. 129 billion masks have been produced globally per month during the pandemic and they are not readily biodegradable. They fragment into micro and nano plastics, which break down faster than plastics such as those found in supermarket bags. The plastic in face masks can release harmful chemical and biological substances into the environment.

These disposable masks are also more expensive!

What is happening to Thurmaston!!!

I write this on a beautiful sunny day (June 14th) to be exact as we have all enjoyed a sunny spell to cheer up while still in semi-lockdown. Through this time, I have found great pleasure in visiting the Watermead Park from Mill Lane and feeding the wild life (with appropriate food I add). But oh what a shame today I feel sad, ashamed and disappointed at the state of the parking area!! Silver gas canisters everywhere!! And McDonald wrappers and bags of rubbish needing to be collected. What are we doing to make a difference in Thurmaston, vandalism, graffiti and litter!! As I was leaving there appeared a group of school children obviously on a school outing of some kind,

Throughout the pandemic I've been shocked by the vast numbers of people in public buildings and outdoors who wear disposable face coverings instead of multiuse cloth masks. We've all seen pictures of birds and other wildlife suffocating or trapped by discarded disposable masks.

The advice is to cut up and dispose of these masks carefully - but surely better advice would be to not buy them in the first place - unless of course you are required to wear disposable masks in high risk settings or have been advised to wear them by your clinician.

Please consider replacing disposable masks with reusable cotton or polyester masks.

One good thing on this trip was all the guys from the canals and waterways working hard to tidy the area around the lock.

What is happening to Thurmaston!!!

So another community asset has gone.

The Old School has been sold off. I thought that the school had been donated to the people of Thurmaston for education purposes. I don t remember that the people of Thurmaston were consulted over the disposal of the site. The reason given for not keeping the building was that the cost of repairs could not be met from the income, but when were we the people of Thurmaston asked to help out to maintain the community asset as it was done for the Silverdale Hall.

I do wonder what right the trustees had to selloff the building without consultation of the community of Thurmaston, and then to hand over the money to the Church of England.

I have nothing against the Church, but surely the money should be going to help the community of Thurmaston as a whole.

I would like to see exactly where the £350,000 plus is going. Not some airy-fairy statement that could mean anything. Let s have all this out in the open for everyone to understand instead of the secretive way that it has been handled so far (I never ever saw a For Sale sign go up on the School).

Response from Trustees

Thank you to the Editors of the Thurmaston Times for allowing our running commentary of all things Old School over recent years, including the Watermead Regeneration Project, public consultation at the Old School, plans for future development, closure due to COVID restrictions, information before and after the sale of the Old School, and confirmation that the net assets of the charity would be given to the church. All very much “out in the open”!

Whilst the trustees sought to provide a facility to the community, the Old School was never given to or owned by “the people of Thurmaston”, but was owned by Thurmaston Old School Community Centre, a charitable incorporated organisation and registered charity, with charitable objectives including “to promote the whole mission of The Church of England”, and ex-officio trustees being the Vicar and Churchwardens, with six other appointed trustees. Leicester Diocesan Board of Finance held title, acting as Custodian Trustee. When trustees sought additional trustees through a Thurmaston Times article to shape the future of the charity, there was a great response, and two local councillors (serving at Parish, Borough, and County) subsequently became trustees.

After the last school pupils left in the late 1960s, the Vicar allowed the County

Council to use the Old School as an education resource centre. Since the centre closed in the early 1980s, the Old School has been used exclusively as a church and community centre.

COVID restrictions closed the Old School in March 2020, and whilst income had been sufficient to cover expenses such as insurance and utilities, it was quite inadequate for the significant structural work that was required, particularly to the roof. Trustees had enthusiastically engaged with Charnwood Borough Council’s Watermead Regeneration Project and had tasked architects to explore how the building might be improved to serve wider uses. Sadly, it soon became apparent that there was no grant funding available through the project for building work, with one potential funder unconvinced of the demand for such facilities given the other community halls already available in Thurmaston. It had already been necessary to close the first floor as a routine electrical safety inspection had identified a significant amount of work that was required. In addition, the external fire escape needed to be replaced. The Old School did not have the funds available to carry out this work. It was possible for the ground floor to remain open when a local business family kindly gave a generous cheque funding electrical works and Charnwood Borough Council contributed generously to the cost of professionally removing asbestos containing materials from storage sheds and for repairs to the floor of the Old School itself.

More of Your Letters Continued from page 5 Trustees were faced with a choice, deciding it would be completely irresponsible to allow the building to gradually deteriorate to the point that it was no longer safe to use, and in that scenario, with no income, to risk the charity itself becoming insolvent. The work that was required was significant and quite beyond what could reasonably be expected of volunteers, particularly with modern health and safety requirements.

Trustees took legal advice from Anthony Collins, Solicitors, and consulted the Charity Commission. The premises were independently valued by Innes England, meeting the requirements of the Charity Commission and charity law. The premises were subsequently marketed by Innes England for offers over £350,000, with ten offers received, some significantly higher than the asking price. There was clearly no need for a For Sale board. The Land Registry regularly publish recent sale information and details are already in the public domain.

In accordance with the governing document registered with the Charity Commission, at dissolution the net assets of the charity are to be applied to the Parochial Church Council of the Parish, hence the beneficiary is The Parochial Church Council of St Michael & All Angels, Thurmaston, itself a registered charity.

The church mission is summarised as “Living as Christ in our community to share the Love of God” and in recent years the church has identified mission priorities as work with children and families and improving hospitality and welcome, including improvements to the church building, such as new toilet and kitchen facilities. The church of course serves the whole community, with many activities, such as the Soar Valley Food Project at St Michael’s, Thurmaston (call 07789 250529 for help with a food parcel); Prayer Groups (Tuesdays); Bright Sparks (parent / carer / toddler group, Wednesdays during termtime); Coffee Time / Pop In (Thursdays, 10.30am-noon – all welcome!); church worship services (Sundays, 11am – do join us!); life events, such as Baptism (Christening), weddings, and funerals; and work with nurseries, schools, and community groups. With such a significant ‘windfall’, I suspect most people will want the church to carefully consider options and priorities and take professional advice.

The Old School building and site could have been sold to developers and “another community asset” would indeed have gone. Trustees were particularly pleased that the new owners, Yogi Divine Society UK, many members of which we understand live in Thurmaston, are committed to working with the local community, having already delivered an interesting and detailed presentation to local councillors and members of the public, and as anybody who has recently driven along Melton Road, Thurmaston will have seen, already have the builders in, making the improvements to the building that the former owners would no doubt have made, had the money been available!

The character and social history of the Old School building is retained. The community asset is retained. An old building falling into disuse and ruin is avoided. The church gains a significant financial windfall to take 800+ years of prayer, worship, and service to Thurmaston into the future.

Trustees could have buried their heads in the sand and allowed the building to deteriorate. Personally, I am pleased that a courageous decision has been made and a good outcome has been achieved.

Ongoing issues at roundabout

The road markings need to be made more prominent so that drivers don’t get confused and end up in the wrong lane inadvertently cutting up other cars.

Most times I use this roundabout to get to Thurmaston Village someone cuts into the lane from the middle lane and I’ve even had someone hail abuse at me saying the middle lane goes round the be that left lane to Thurmaston which obviously is not the case.

It seems that there are still problems on the big roundabout at the end of Thurmaston Bypass. Here are some of your thoughts and comments.

Costco is the big problem, drivers going to Costco and do not look at the road markings. The roundabout is no longer fit for purpose due to the amount of retail places that people can go to.

It’s retail park users coming from Leicester in Syston lane cutting up inside or those in middle lane (from Hobby Horse) cutting across into Barkby turn off or those in retail lane but want to use dual carriageway, the whole problem is the "retail" food outlets site full stop.

Returning today I was more vigilant in looking at approach from Hobby Horse, all signs are roadside and are currently obscured by the adjacent trees and are very late for the chance to choose correct lane, an easy fix would be early overhead signage and road marking.

Clearer lane markings needed, preferably one marked ‘Costco’ for those not local to the area who cut everyone up.

A separate lane is required for those on the bypass to go on into Syston so you don't get cut up when people use the middle and push in and avoid the retail park queue.

The way Asda and Hobby Horse roundabout lanes work contradict each other, which also doesn’t help.

Needs clearer marking and complete redesign it simply doesn't work, combined with people who can't even be bothered to read the road markings makes it a lottery for us locals needing to go about daily travel. It's for the "experts" to solve but then they designed it in the first place.

If an extra line was added to the end of the middle lane showing it curling toward the dual carriageway, it would make it much clearer that it only goes that way. It’s usually always Costco peeps. Signage too.

Remove the second lane so that there aren’t two lanes facing Costco, then you’ll have to have one lane coming down from Asda straight on only and the other left turn only.

I have to warn all visitors about that roundabout, it’s embarrassing!

People see the two lanes pointing towards Costco and so assume both lanes go round when only the inside lane does.

People in Thurmaston never had this problem before Costco was built.

Issue from Leicester turning up Barkby Lane using centre lane which is straight on only to follow round (wrongly) to Syston, or worse right round to Barkby Lane.

Three lanes (Thurm/Leic/Leic) on the roundabout that turn into two (Thurm/Hobby Horse). One of the biggest issues is people being in the lane for Leicester and cutting across into the Thurmaston lane because they’re going to Costco. But this roundabout is a monster of problems because there’s also the issue of people being in the Leicester lane and cutting across into the lane up to the retail park. The whole system is poor.

The two lanes into the village from A46 Hobby horse is a major issue, theoretically the middle lane puts you in the correct lane for when the lights stop so not entirely wrong. The right turners have to leave the lane they are in to join the correct lane into the village.

Thurmaston road closures

Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTRO) are to be made for the following locations: Barkby Thorpe Lane, Church Hill Road, Silverdale Drive, Humberstone Lane The purpose of the TTRO is to allow Leicestershire County Council to facilitate carriageway improvement works and the installation of a signallised pedestrian crossing.

The TTRO will incorporate a temporary over-night road closure on Barkby Thorpe Lane and a temporary suspension of the 7.5 tonne weight restriction on Church Hill Road, Silverdale Drive and Humberstone Lane, Thurmaston.

Following the Holy Communion service at St Michael’s, Thurmaston on Sunday 27th June 2021, two Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to volunteer charity trustees of Thurmaston Old School Community Centre.

The Rev Tim Day, Chair of Trustees of the Old School charity, presented awards to Maureen Tebbutt, for service as Trustee, Treasurer, and Lettings Officer; and Darren Gartside, as Trustee and Secretary.

GARDEN with Helen This is our regular feature by local gardener Helen Osborne who guides us through the seasons with hints and tips for our gardens.

We have had a very different summer.

It started off very wet and then it turned very hot and dry.

I enjoy growing my own cuttings, splitting plants, and sowing my own seeds that I have collected from my own garden.

Wait until they are dry on the plant.

Collect the seed and place in an envelope. Label and date when the seed was collected, put in a dry dark place and sow next year.

If you have a vegetable garden with bushes, pick the fruit that are ripe, and put any extra in your freezer, save them and eat them in the winter months. When the fruit have been picked, prune the bush to about 2 feet in height. Remove any weak stems and dead ones. This will help the bushes to produce more fruit next year.

Thurmaston dentist retires

Dr Bridget Astletine has retired from Thurmaston Dental Practice.

After qualifying in 1988 from Newcastle University, Bridget spent two years in general practice in the north-east, joining Thurmaston Dental Practice in 1990.

She moved back to Nottingham for a few years while her boys were young.

Fortunately she returned to the practice, which she remained until she retired.

Over the years, Thurmaston residents have been reassured by Bridget’s confident manner.

Outside of dentistry, Bridget enjoys running, mountain walking and skiing.

Bridget has been so dedicated to her patiends that even a running injury did not keep her away - she continued to work throughout!

We wish you well for the future, Bridget.

Syd Pegg went on a coach trip to play a rugby team in Wales. On the way there Syd hid under a bus seat. Dave Lyons made up the pictured ‘passport’ to get Syd home.

Thurmaston’s funeral bier

Did you know that Thurmaston used to have two funeral biers? Often known in the past as the 'pauper's carriage', provided free in times of great need, this glasstopped, black painted bier with pram style wheels was smaller than those of other parishes, being just big enough for the coffin. As well as its size, it was unusual in having an ornate glazed cover, the sides of which were etched with roses. It was more common for a village bier to have a simple wooden base, similar wheels, a long handle at the front for two persons to draw it, or alternatively, bars or handles at each corner to facilitate four bearers. Such biers date from the late Victorian era, a time when churchyards were becoming full and additional burial grounds, some distance from the church or chapel, had to be provided. They served until motorised funeral transport was more readily available.

Charnwood Borough Council has published the Charnwood Local Plan 2021-2037 Pre-Submission Draft for consultation. The Plan and the evidence which supports it is available to view online.

Festival of archaeology launch

The Festival of Archaeology ran from 17th July to 1st August.

With lockdown restrictions easing, this was the perfect time for people to get out and explore their local places, discover the archaeology and rich heritage that is all around us and uncover the stories, sites, buildings, places, people and events that make our local communities so special.

Events, both on the ground and online, took place across

The Festival brought together local archaeological organisations to showcase all that is great about our local archaeological heritage and celebrated local sites, stories and the people who lived and shaped our local places.

The Leicestershire and Rutland Festival is part of a national Festival of Archaeology organised by the Council for British Archaeology (CBA) and is supported by the Leicestershire Fieldworkers, the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society, the Leicestershire Industrial History Society, University of Leicester Archaeological Services and many other local heritage groups.

The launch event for this year's Festival of Archaeology took place on 17th July at Abbey Pumping Station.

It was a free, public, yet socially-distanced and Covidaware event. Activities

included talks and reenactments, all themed around health crises through time. The new president of the CBA, Raksha Dave of Time Team fame officially opened the festival.

Event organiser, Jim Butler, said “We’ve had a fantastic launch event. Everyone enjoyed engaging with each other and the resources to learn about archaeology. It was inspiring to look at the lessons from our past and how they can help modern society in the future.”

65th Wedding Anniversary celebration

Thurmaston residents, Barbara and Derek Mitchell celebrated their 65th wedding anniverary.

They were wed at St Andrew’s church in Aylestone on a hot day - 30th June, 1956 They moved to Thurmaston in 1960.

Barbara and Derek met at the tender ages of 15 and 16 respectively. Derek was an apprentice at a bakery on Barbara’s street.

They have two daughters; Claire and Kate, three grandchildren; Romy Zanthe and Sonny and are expecting their first great-grandchild in September.

The couple had a series of small celebrations to allow all members of the family to take part whilst also keeping to the Covid restrictions on group sizes.

They also received a card from the Queen.

Barbara and Derek’s advice for a happy marriage is to never fall out about the children and not to go to sleep on a quarrel.

Girlguiding Thurmaston has continued to thrive throughout the whole of the Covid-19 pandemic. We currently have seven units running both online and face-to-face.

singing lessons, visits from The Alzheimer's Society, engraving art, making wind chimes, visits from The Blue Cross, quizzes and games. We took part in a Girlguiding 'SMILE' activity to spread positivity and make others smile.

Within the last few months units have started to introduce face-to-face meetings again whilst adhering to new guidelines.

We have made the most of local facilities and enjoyed walks around Watermead Park, canoeing, paddle boarding at Leicester Outdoor Pursuit Centre and bellboating from our HQ.

Girls have also done treasure hunts, bug hunts, outdoor cooking and barefoot walks (which included lots of loud screaming and mud between toes!). Some units began meeting face-to-face again on a weekly basis which provided some much needed normality for the girls. Other units continued to meet online and had a variety of tasks, activities and themed meetings including things such as dance lessons,

We also took part in Leicestershire's Rocket Round competition and girls designed rocket templates for a Girlguiding Rocket for the trail that will take place in Summer 2021 with 40 rockets being placed in and around the city. Girlguiding is now being represented at this event which is a huge success.

With this we also took part on a 'Moon Walk' to gain sponsorship to donate to LOROS in support of the 'Rocket Round'.

We celebrated lots of achievements through the first half of 2021 too. One of our Joint District Commissioners Elizabeth Lowe - was awarded the Chief

Commissioners Award and will be presented with this later in the year. Also, Harriett Thraves (Leader in Charge at 3rd Thurmaston Guides) and Naomi Lowe (volunteer with Girlguiding Thurmaston and Inspire Coordinator for Leicestershire County) were presented with their 5 Years Service Award. They were presented with their awards from Joint District Commissioners Elizabeth Lowe and Selina Thraves.

We are very much looking forward to the second half of 2021 and hopefully getting back to meeting face-to-face again, having lots more adventures and fun!

Fumes on Earls Way

Following ongoing complaints from residents, the Parish Council have continued to requeste that the Borough Council arrange air quality monitoring.

A Charnwood Borough Council spokesperson said, “The council will always investigate environmental health complaints and we

would encourage people to report issues.”

Since 2016 only 30 complaints had been received.

Every complaint is investigated and the premises have been visited. The business owner is working with the relevant authorities to form a front facing odour management plan.

THURMASTON PARISH COUNCIL NOTICEBOARD REPORT FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN MARK LOWE As we cautiously return to life and Covid restrictions are lifted, I would like to bring you all up to date with arrangements for the Parish facilities.

Thurmaston Parish Council Office and Elizabeth Park Sports Centre are now opening with numbers capped to 100.

Ongoing work Parish Council Meetings and Committee Meetings have now returned to face-toface meetings, previously they were online using the Zoom platform. Committee meetings returned on 7th May - socially distanced at Thurmaston Memorial Hall.

The first full Parish Council meeting was on 8th June. We are now pleased to return to our usual location at Elizabeth Park Centre. As always, members of the public are very welcome to join the meetings.

Meeting details, including agendas are available on the Parish Council website or by contacting the Clerk.

Elm tree and poem We have taken delivery of an elm tree which was one of 50 donated to local parishes by Goscote Nurseries. Elm trees were decimated in the 1970s and 80s by Dutch Elm Disease and the nursery have been growing a number of these trees which were micro-propogated from elms that survived the disease.

The Parish Council invited residents to write a poem to accompany the tree. The winning poem was penned by Mick Westwood: In Remembrance of those who lost their lives to Covid-19 A tree to remember the ones we have lost, A tree to remember the terrible cost, Of a virus that affected everyone's lives, Parents, grandparents, children, husbands and wives.

The world became a different place, And we remember them in this special space, where we reflect and remember those who have gone, but in our memories they will always live on.

We would also like to commend runnerup, Eileen Thraves for her poem.

Street cleaning update The Parish Council have arranged for a free standing litter bin to be installed on Clayton Drive.

Local Plan Charnwood Borough Council’s 5 Year Housing Land Supply has now been published online. The Local Plan Project Board has been monitoring the five-year supply.

The latest data on deliverable housing land supply shows that Charnwood cannot demonstrate a five-year supply of housing

against the updated Govenement targets.

The lack of supply has consequences for the way planning decisions are made.

There are enough homes with planning permission in Charnwood to meet the new five-year housing but timings are not within the next five years.

Developers and market forces determine that rate of delivery, not the Borough Council and so the the Secretary of State has been asked to suspend the requirement for a five year supply, as the planning process was constrained during the pandemic.

Thank you and welcome Parish Clerk, Tracey Harley will be leaving after 23 years working for the Parish Council, initially working for six years as Deputy Clerk under Janice Harriman.

During this time Tracey has been key to the Parish Council - always hard-working and extremely efficient. She has seen many Councillors join and leave the Council over the period of 23 years become a friend to both Councillors and staff.

Volunteering: Are you eager to engAGE?

Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland (Syston) are looking for new volunteers.

Lockdown restrictions have eased and we are back in action, ready for that social (distanced) interaction.

With front and back of house vacancies, morning and afternoon shifts, we are excited to welcome applications from you!

Applications can be found in store and are open to anyone aged 14+. Life gets busy so, even if you can only spare a couple of hours a week, apply, apply, apply!

But, why volunteer?

Volunteering helps worthwhile causes and gives back to the community, but there are benefits for you too.

1. Connects with others: Volunteering allows you to make a real impact on your community. Even helping with the smallest tasks can make a significant difference. If you think working in store is a small feat in the grand scheme of things, think again. It makes a substantial difference! Whether working front of house with customers, or working back of house, sorting through donations, you will play an integral role. The money

raised in store wouldn't be possible without volunteers. No matter how 'small', your work makes a BIG difference.

Dedicating your time is also a great way to make new friends, expand your network and elevate your social skills. You’ll find people who share common interests, and those with completely different interests, who you can learn from and grow! Some people are naturally outgoing, others are shy, maybe even anxious to meet new people. Volunteering is a great way to develop social skills.

2. Good for the body and mind: Volunteering can help you stay physically healthy - it’s an active role, moving around the store. Helping and working with others can have a significant effect on your overall psychological well-being too. Volunteering increases self-confidence and provides a sense of accomplishment and identity. The better you feel about what you are doing, the more likely you are to have a positive outlook on life and your future goals.

Importantly, volunteering makes you happy. (If you don't believe me, just ask the scientists!) Researchers, have found that being helpful to others provides pleasure. We're hard-wired to give, so the more we do so, the happier we feel.

3. Advance your career: Volunteering is great work experience, and it's never too late to start. It gives you the opportunity to develop and exercise important transferable skills used in the workplace - teamwork, communication, problem solving, leadership, planning, organisation.

4. Fun and fulfilment: Volunteering is a fun way to get to know yourself better, and to explore your interests. It's also a relaxing and energising escape, away from the hum-drum of 'ordinary' life.

Return to the stage

QT Theatre Group's last production was Chance Encounters, many months and two lockdowns ago! The two one-act plays in rehearsal had to be postponed as a result of Covid-19. QTs, like so many other theatre companies, have been dark since early 2020 and I'm sure that regular members and audiences are suffering the withdrawal symptoms!

Well, I'm pleased to say that, following a committee meeting in early June, we can start to gear up again, albeit slowly. Our wonderful venue, The Old Chapel, is able

to accommodate us once more. However, audience capacity restrictions, stringent rules on seating, social distancing, customer flow, sanitisation and so on, mean that theatres cannot yet return to the previous 'normal' theatre experience. For small companies, like QTs, there are the additional challenges of limitations on how many performers can be on stage and, more importantly, how many performers can gather to rehearse. We have never been able to have that many people on stage at the best of times (little stage = small cast!) So, what do we have in mind?

One of our favourite writers, David Tristram, has written a very funny One Act play called "Lockdown in Little Grimley"!

We are considering putting on a production of this in the autumn, most probably at the

middle to end of November. We will, of course, keep you updated. We would love to hear from anyone who is interested in joining us, in whatever capacity. Perhaps, after being isolated for so long, you would like to try something new, meeting new people and enjoying new experiences?

The Soar Valley Food Project comes to St Michael's Church, Thurmaston For many years St Michael's church along with local community donations and School Harvest donations from Church Hill Junior School, Church Hill Infants School, Eastfield Primary School and Broomfield School in East Goscote have supported various food bank projects in our local area.

We have made donations of food and money to the Carpenter's Arms in Loughborough, the South Leicester Food Bank Project and more lately to the Soar Valley Food Project (SVFP) which has recently moved its main distribution point from Rothley Baptist Church to Mountsorrel Baptist Church.

Following the completion of our Church building work which has included the installation of a toilet and a new Kitchen area we have now become a satellite distribution point for the SVFP. The project seeks to support individuals and families in times of crisis when they struggle to feed themselves, perhaps when

St Michael & All Angels, Thurmaston – 800th Anniversary

A Service of Thanksgiving for 800+ years of St Michael & All Angels, Thurmaston will be held in Church on Sunday 26th September 2021 at 11am. The Holy Communion service will last for around an hour and will be followed by a reception with light buffet at Thurmaston Memorial Hall.

In addition to church members past and present, parishioners, and representatives of civic and community groups, confirmed guests include the Rt Rev Martyn Snow, Bishop of Leicester, and The Worshipful the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Paul Baines, and Mayoress, Dr Ning Baines, with former clergy and lay ministers including the Rev T. Robin Martin (Fr Robin), Ven Javaid Iqbal, Rev Martin Court, Rev Stephen Bowring, Rev Lynn Padmore, and the Rev Ian Hill, with their spouses.

The project is entirely supported by charitable donations from across the Soar Valley area, this includes Rothley, Syston, Thurmaston, Sileby and Mountsorrel amongst others. Following a long break to comply with Covid-19 restrictions, and whilst building work was carried out to provide new toilet and kitchen facilities at church, the bells were rung again at St Michael’s on Sunday 4th July 2021.

It is hoped that bellringers will now ring regularly for Sunday church services and weddings.

The bellringers appeared to enjoy ringing in their new ringing chamber.

Anybody interested in joining the bellringing team is encouraged to ask at church or contact the Vicar to be put in touch with the Tower Captain.

Ride and Stride St Michael’s, Thurmaston will be open as usual for the annual Ride and Stride, organised by Leicestershire Historic Churches Trust, on Saturday 11th September 2021. There will also be a heritage display in church from 10am to 4pm and light refreshments will be available. All are welcome to pop in and look around the church and to see the new toilet and kitchen facilities. Candles will be available for anybody who wishes to light a candle, perhaps in memory of a loved one.

Sponsor a roundabout It has become more and more common for roundabouts to be sponsored by local businesses especially in busy areas. The small roundabout at Asda is appalling and is in desperate need of some TLC. I contacted the sponsor company looking for answers and action.

Dragons teeth!

When the speed limits on Barkby Thorpe Lane were reduced to a more acceptable level as part of the scheme was dragon teeth to be positioned on the road as a warning to motorists of the up coming junction. These are yet to be done because the road surface was surfaced dressed but will be on the road next month.

Church Hill bridge The roundabout has had several sponsors over the years but that all changed around a year ago when the then sponsor, Greg's Vets, was taken-over by new owners, Medivet. I was told by the roundabout sponsor company that they assumed that Medivet would want to hold on to the sponsorship following their takeover of Greg's Vets, but on 25th September a policy decision was made not to renew. The sponsor's contract expired on 23rd August 2020. At that point I was informed that the company should have notified the council that the roundabout was no longer being maintained. For some reason this was overlooked and did not happen. Happily, a new business, Whiz Flooring has shown interest in sponsoring the roundabout and are in the process of having signs made.

I have received assurance from the maintenance contractors' Regional Manager that by the time you receive this, the maintenance team have completed a maintenance and rectification visit.

Pedestrian crossing

I am pleased to report that no objections were received to the planned toucon crossing. Detail design/programming is being carried out and we're still on track to deliver the scheme in July/ August.

Construction of the crossing will require the use of 4-way temporary traffic signals, however the majority of the work will be carried out at night to keep disruption to a minimum. A night time road closure will also be required to carry out road surfacing.

In March a team from Highways completed investigative work by way of ground penetrating radar and topographical surveys. The specialist team are now looking at what this means and what solutions could be put forward. Highways are also designing my suggested request for height markers, however permission from Network Rail will need to obtained to place these on the bridge.

Over the last few months my garden has gone mad. Heat mixed with rain has meant that everything in the garden has come up rosy and unfortunately that means everything, including weeds! We seem to accept that we need to rid our garden of weeds but not so much when the weeds spring up on the footpath at the edge of our property! The council are the easiest target and I have had complaints that take longer to share with me than to actually remove the weeds themselves.

The county has been out once this year at the start of the growing season. Fast moving quad bikes that spray as they speed along the paths. It is a huge task and if the weather is not just right at the time of spraying it is a waste of time.

Because of the complaint's county are spraying again but they will not be removing the dead weeds that needs to be done by you. I have also received complaints stating that their neighbours don't clear up their weeds or sweep the path. I would say if the weeds bother you, you weed their bit as well. When cutting my hedge on the footpath I will sweep the path and remove the weeds from my next door neighbours wall on the footpath because I like the area near me looking nice and I would encourage others to do that as well.

I know many residents litter pick, myself included so maybe we could extend this pride in our area and remove weeds that have established them selves at the foot of people's front garden walls.

Costs for the proposed scheme which is in excess of £70K have been approved.

Highways are now awaiting funding to be released to carry out this work. Once the funding is secured the preferred design, update and time scales will be shared with residents.

Weed killer is not like it was and quite rightly so. Spraying weedkiller on public land such as footpaths and gutters need to be regulated so it does not release unnecessary and harmful chemicals in to our water system, harm insects or be damaging to our pets’ health.

On Saturday 2nd July, Tangent House Day Nursery held it's annual Graduation Day. Due to the Coronavirus rules, the format was a little different this year.

We still had our grand graduation ceremony, where each child leaving to go to school was presented with a certificate in recognition of their development and achievement; but in smaller groups to allow our proud Parents/Carers and family members to attend. Mystery stone found in Shuttlewood Clarke Thurmaston garden Foundation now open Thurmaston family discover mysterious stone in their garden.

The Raval family are curious about where the stone came from. It is inscribed, 'W.I AD 1840'.

The house was built in the 1930s so the family are curious as to the history of the area. It has been suggested that the stone could belong to a grave or it might be a boundary marker.

'Support, friendship, wellbeing resumes as Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation commence in person wellbeing classes and activities'

During this challenging year, the Foundation has supported individuals through the provision of online sessions, including mental health support groups, exercise classes and volunteering opportunities.

As the Foundation safely reopens its facilities in Ulverscroft, they are delighted to recommence a variety of organised activities, promoting health, engagement, inclusion, and mental and physical wellbeing. From creative writing to therapeutic art sessions, seated exercise classes and woodland walks - the Foundation is passionate about providing engaging services in a personalised, home from home setting that makes a real difference to community wellbeing.

Difficult season ends in Cup win

Recognising the absence of men’s football in Thurmaston, James West of Thurmaston Design and Print Co. decided to set up a mens’ football team in Thurmaston just over four years ago.

Thurmaston DPC was formed and in that time a lot has happened both on and off the pitch. There is now a first team, a reserve team and also a growing ladies team.

During the pandemic both men’s teams were challenging for their respective leagues and were hugely disappointed when their seasons were cut short due to Covid-19 and the leagues were cancelled with both teams near the top of their respective leagues.

When lockdown restrictions were eased, the Leicester & Charnwood Sunday Football League organised ‘Covid’ Cups.

The first team made it through to the first division final against West Leicester Panthers at Quorn’s impressive stadium on Friday 4th June 2021 and what a night it turned out to be. Under the floodlights, in front of a crowd of around 600 and on a superb pitch Thurmaston DPC really turned on the style and beat a very good

The game didn’t begin as planned with DPC giving away a penalty to allow the Panthers to take an early lead. The team spent the first half carving a way to break Panthers down and the club captain Piers Wheeler got the

equaliser just before the break. Five goals in the second half meant that the team won comfortably with a composed penalty finished by Corey Bucalossi before four goals from this season’s top goal scorer Josh Crossley.

The reserves reached the semi-final of their Covid cup narrowly missing out to GNG Sunday.

Over the last year there has been a lot of interest in ladies’ football in Thurmaston and regular training sessions took place as soon as Covid restrictions allowed and it paid off when the ladies took part in a seven-a-side tournament organised by Leicester City. They reached the final and were beaten by a very well established team from Asfordby. The ladies lost 3-0 but should be very proud of their achievement in their first competitive competition, the

There has been a last minute opening for a new coach/manager for the ladies team and the club are actively looking for somebody to take on the role.

Great credit should be given to James West - the man whose vision has created an environment where men and women can take part in a sport they love and play at a very high standard.

All the teams are professionally turned out and well organised by the management team that James has built around him.

Watermead Challenge

The Dunelm Watermead Challenge took place on 6th July. Over 500 runners chose between a fast and flat 3 or 5 mile run through the wonderful backdrop of Watermead Country Park.

The race was organised by volunteers at the Rotary Club of Wreake Valley and supported charities such as Hope Against Cancer, MIND and Jade's Retreat.

Dave Snutch was appointed Race Director for the 2021 event, ably assisted

by Assistant Race Directors Mel Snutch, Daniel Burns and Lou Houghty.

The annual event could not go ahead in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year’s event also looked uncertain when Step 4 of the the Government roadmap was delayed. However, the team were able 28 Thurmaston Times Issue 159 August/September 2021

to go ahead as they had already planned for some degree of Covid security.

Race director, Dave Snutch also put on an informal second attempt on 20th July for those who missed out on the actual event due to Covid self-isolation requirements.

Medals were given to those who had registered but missed the Watermead Challenge and attempted the the informal event.

Wreake Runners helping to keep Syston clean

A group from Wreake Runners made up a group of 70 volunteers who took part in a litter pick on Sunday 6th June. The event was organised by Syston Town Council who were able to provide gloves, litter grabbers/sticks, collection bags and hi-vis vests.

Volunteers were designated areas in the town centre or able to choose an area if they had a specific preference. Included in the areas were Memorial Park, also known as 'Donkey Park' which is the base and meeting place for the running club on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Not only is litter unattractive and a danger to wildlife, it attracts negative behaviour. In a time where well-being is increasingly important and

people are spending more time in their local areas, it is important to reduce our impact on the environment and make it a nice place to live.

Wreake Runners see the impact of the litter within the area, from countryside verges to town centre streets and felt it was important to do their part and help keep the area tidy.

In a short, Covid-delayed presentation ceremony held on 8th June, Syston Bowling Club paid homage to two of their most respected Members.

Dave Fox is the longest serving Member of the Club, having joined as long ago as 1977.

Val Foreman is the current Administrative Director (Company Secretary) of the

Club. Her award is in recognition of the way in which she has worked tirelessly for the Club and its Members, over many years and in several capacities.

In making the presentations, Club Chairman and President, Pete Murray, thanked them both for their loyalty to and support for the Club over the years, holding them both up as role models for the next generation of Members to follow.

Bowls Evening for Birstall WI

On the rather chilly evening of the longest day of the year, a contingent of over 20 ladies from the Birstall WI visited St Margaret's Bowls Club for a taster session and a chance to try something different.

The visit had originally been arranged for last season but had been postponed because of Covid.

The ladies were divided into groups across the six rinks, where the basics of bowling was explained and demonstrated by experienced club members. This was followed by a good session of trying out the new skill. Many commented how much heavier

the bowls were than they had previously imagined.

It was wonderful to see how quickly many of the ladies were getting respectable results. For those who managed to get their bowl to draw close to the jack there was a very rewarding buzz of satisfaction.

After an hour or so our visitors were ushered into the clubhouse for a fish and chip supper; following Covid guidelines of course. Overall, it was a most enjoyable occasion. For the club, it was great to get back to the sort of social activity that the game of bowls provides.

Local resident Gary Lowe ran a half marathon on 7th May. He has originally planned to run 13.1 miles at the London Landmarks half-marathon in August and then paddle 125 miles two weeks later in the Devizes to Westminster 125 mile canoe race.

Update from Thurmaston Boxing Gym

We met with Boxing England last month and they were impressed with all the work we have put in. The gym meets their requirements and volunteers are in the process of completing their training.

We hope to be up and running within the next month.

We are now a member of Boxing England and the club has been affiliated. We have also purchased some new pieces of equipment.

Lead volunteer, Shannon will be attending her level 2 coaching badge at the start of next year.

Plans To run junior sessions separate to the older teenagers/adults and also looking at running female only classes.

We have also applied for some funding, so hopefully we can purchase more new kit.

Generation Youth Our sister organisation, Generation Youth made it through to the Niche business award finals.

We will be offering volunteering placements in the new school year.

We are looking for businesses in the area, that would like to give our students the opportunity to complete some valuable work experience. Do get in touch if you can help.

Happy 100th birthday to Marion Potts

Resident at Hadrian House celebrated 100th birthday.

Marion Potts had a fulfilling career as a performer alongside Vera Lynn and many other stars. That’s how she met her husband, Ernest. He was an actor with his father and brother. They met before the war.

Marion started out as a ‘dot’ in Betty Dallas and her dinky dots theater troupe. Her stage name

was Nita Vincent. She played Miss Red Riding Hood and also featured in Babes in the Wood, Cinderella and various pantomimes.

Marion was a young girl on her own. Ernest’s father took her under his wing.

She joined their troupe. They worked through the war visiting hospitals, the airforce and army camps in England and France. Unfortunately things came to an end when Ernest’s father was killed and his brother didn’t want to carry on.

After the war there weren’t many theatres open. Marion and Ernest carried on as a double act - Tony and Tina.

They performed at Leicester Palace and the working men’s clubs across the midlands.

Marion and Ernest moved to Leicester in 1962 after visting for the first time in 1947.

Marion received a birthday card from the Queen and had a party with her family, The following day there was another party at Hadrian’s House where there was a big cake for everyone plus a fruitcake for Marion.

When asked how she felt, aged 100, Marion said, “I only feel 21. It doesn’t feel any different but everyone keeps asking. I’m not even ill.”

Plant sale raises money for LOROS

With extra plants from sowing seeds earlier in the year and a last-minute appeal for more plants and cuttings Lynn and Mick Westwood held a plant sale for LOROS on their driveway in June.

The event was attended by a steady stream of locals who went home with vegetable, fruit and border plants, in return for a donation to LOROS. The couple would like to thank everyone who donated and/or bought along plants to add to the available collection. Special thanks to local gardener, Helen Osborne who not only donated plants but offered advice to purchasers during the afternoon.

The event raised £230.

Local headteacher retires

Mrs Shereen Kirk retired from Church Hill C of E Junior School at the end of the school year. She will be greatly missed by staff, children and their families.

What a load of rubbish!

Whilst litter-picking the ditches and hedgerows around Thurmaston we gathered lots of broken car parts.

These had been left after accidents and included car body trim, exhausts, wheels, tyres, door mirrors, dozens of wheel trims and even engine parts! What could we do with these various bits and pieces we asked ourselves? The obvious answer was to make a car and so the ‘Corona Hedgerow’ was born.

The car is a luxurious two seater ‘pick up’ truck with twin exhausts, electric door mirrors, locking petrol cap and finished in a selection of wheel trims.

A big thank you to everyone who is litterpicking and helping make the place live look much better.

Search for lost relative

Gladys Bowler - information wanted.

In pursuit of their aims to look after this lovely peaceful Victorian green space, The Friends of Belgrave Cemetery are anxious to trace any living relatives of Gladys Bowler née Clarke who rests in Belgrave Cemetery.

Gladys was the daughter of Thomas Clarke and Ellen née Sharpe.

Gladys was buried with her baby in 1929 and was later joined by her mother Ellen Clarke in 1945.

Gladys’ husband was Frank B Clarke and at the time of her death they were living at 109 Moira Street, Belgrave. Gladys also had a brother Thomas Leonard Clarke

born in 1905, according to the 1911 census. It is believed that Frank Clarke was later remarried to Mabel Elizabeth Chappell at Dinas Powis Wesleyan Church on 31st August 1931.

Frank and Mabel had a daughter Mary R Bowler. In 1939 he was living in Birstall employed as a Laundry Head Clerk Cashier. He died in Leicester in 1992. Headteacher in 2004 and then Headteacher in 2007. Previously she worked Nottinghamshire for 10 years; then for over eight years in several schools across Leicestershire and Leicester City, covering the whole primary school range from Reception to Year 6.

During her time as headteacher, Mrs Kirk has created an atmosphere of care, support and encouragement for children with high standards of learning at the heart

of everything. Her commitment has been relentless.

We all wish Mrs Kirk well in her retirement. We hope that she will enjoy spending time with her family and her hobbies - reading, gardening, visiting the theatre and music.

Assistant headteacher, Mrs Diane Brown will take up the role of headteacher in the new academic year.
