Energizing for the New Year We trust everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s holiday season. Now that the mad dash is behind us, we would like to take this opportunity to bring you up to speed on what is happening and share a few thoughts moving forward.

New Website Our new and improved LUSARDI website is up and running!

Since all of us can work on something long enough to lose detail perspective (think, can’t see the forest for the trees), if you see something that looks amiss or incorrect, please let Marcella Garofalo know. Although technically still in its “beta” testing stage, we are extremely excited about the new look, content, and overall feel. Log on, check it out, and play around!

New Payroll & Time Keeping System We are in the final phase of implementation of our new ADP payroll/time keeping system. A tremendous amount of effort has been devoted behind the scenes to make this step a successful one. We are at the point of establishing a few ‘Guinea Pigs’ within our team to start testing things out. A big ‘thank you’ to everyone on Lance Rieman and Trevor Burnett’s projects, as well as the Accounting Department, for taking part in that task. While we learn the system and train everyone to use it correctly, we will continue to track time the “oldfashioned” way as well as the “new” way. If everything works as intended, both systems will produce the same answer (er, paycheck). We anticipate completing the final implementation steps in the first quarter of 2022.

Continue to Stay Safe - COVID Update The new “Omicron” strain of the COVID-19 virus continues to surge across the United States. Please continue to be vigilant in your safety precautions, not only for you and your families, but for those you work with as well.

Also as of this writing, the highly-publicized OSHA Emergency Temporary Standard that was under a stay by the 5th Circuit Court has been revitalized by the 6th Circuit Court. We anticipate the matter will end up in the Supreme Court. Until the litigation has run its course, OSHA has suspended activities related to implementation and enforcement of the ETS until February 9th.

Final Thoughts We enter 2022 full of enthusiasm for what lies ahead. There are many challenges facing all of us (Covid-19 variants, inflation, supply-chain issues, labor shortages, rapidly changing regulations, etc.), but at the same time we must recognize there are also many opportunities before us (financial stability, strong backlog of work, wonderful clients, subcontractors, and vendors). Take a moment to recognize a blessing we have all been given: the chance to contribute our abilities to those we work with for a common goal. We are so PROUD of our TEAM!

DEPARTMENT UPDATES VACATION POLICY: In an effort to further encourage everyone to use vacation that is

accrued, beginning January 1, 2022, the maximum number of days that can be accrued will be reduced from 2x the annual amount to 1.5x the annual amount. Please note that for those who currently have accrued vacation in excess of the new 1.5x limit, you will NOT lose those days.

Once the max is reached you will cease to accrue any additional vacation hours until you use some of your vacation time.

SICK POLICY: As a reminder, we are revising our sick leave policy on January 1, 2022 to

ensure we are compliant in all cities and counties. Paid sick time will be provided on an accrual basis. Employees will earn 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. Paid sick time accruals cease when an employee is out on a leave of absence (unpaid leave, vacation, sick leave, statutory family and/or medical leave). If a recognized holiday falls during an employee’s approved paid sick time, the employee will not be charged a sick day for the employee’s time off on the holiday. Employees begin earning paid sick time on date of hire but may not request to use earned paid sick time until the 90th day of employment. If sick leave is exhausted, unpaid leave will be used in its place. Unused, earned time will carry over to next year until a maximum accrual has been reached. The maximum accrual is 80 hours. Unused, earned sick leave time is not payable upon termination. Any unused sick leave that you have in your bank at the end of 2021 will NOT go away. It will carry over to the 2022 calendar year.

SAFETY TIP - HANDS: What is the most frequently used body part while at work? If you

answered “Hands” you’re correct. Think of all the tasks we take for granted that we perform everyday with our hands. Getting dressed, tying your shoes, pouring coffee, typing, hammering, sawing or petting your dog just to name a few. Now, imagine losing the use of only one of your hands and how difficult the everyday tasks would become. Having just experienced this myself on a temporary basis I can vouch for the extreme challenges losing the use of a hand presents. We need to protect our hands from injury to insure our quality of life. No matter which department we work in there are simple safety procedures to follow to keep your hands safe. Working in the office ensure your work station is set up properly keeping your wrists and hands in a straight line while typing. Never stick your fingers into a copy machine as parts inside can be very hot and cause burns. Beware of those pesky paper cuts especially when handling envelopes.

Inspect tools for damage before each use Use the proper tool for the job. Don’t use a screwdriver as a chisel Always ensure power tools are properly guarded before use Wear gloves appropriate for the tasks you are performing Make sure there is plenty of clearance in the work area so your hands or finger don’t get crushed between objects being handled

• A lways cut away from yourself and others when using a razor knife; make sure the blade is sharp • Use both hands when operating a drill. This may prevent the drill from spinning out of your hands • Focus on your work when pounding nails or stakes with hammers • Avoid pinch points, i.e. hinged doors, tail gates, ladders or toolboxes • Keep your hands and fingers out from under heavy objects.

UPDATES: As we wrap up 2021, our Preconstruction Department is moving into 2022 with a growing list of upcoming projects including a number of car dealerships, schools, medical facilities, labs, and office jobs.

Despite the current challenge of long lead times for some materials, Lusardi Construction has been able to creatively meet our Owners’ needs and project requirements.

NEW ADDITION: Precon is excited for the addition of Tyla Desmond to our team. She is Julie Muramoto’s daughter and – like her mom – has jumped into the world of construction and is learning quickly. She brings to the department excellent interpersonal skills to further enhance subcontractor relationships and secure solid bids for each project.

VA San Diego Healthcare System

The award-winning Veterans Affairs Outpatient Center Kearny Mesa project received the top tenant improvement project of the year from the San Diego Business Journal and was a finalist in the Associated General Contractors Building Excellence Awards.

The Veterans Affairs Outpatient Center Kearny Mesa is the newest hospital annex building in the VA Healthcare system. The outpatient clinic will serve the local veteran community and provide relief from the populated La Jolla campus just ten miles west of the new campus.

The project consisted of reconstructing an existing 100,000 SF Bank of America building into a state-ofthe-art Outpatient Center for the Veterans Affairs by expanding the building 25,000 SF. Adjacent to the facility is a new poured-in-place 4-story, 395 stall parking garage.

The existing building, located on Aero Drive, was formerly a Bank of America vault guarding as much as $1 billion in cash and coin. A bulletproof guard tower, bulletproof interior holding rooms, and highly secure money vaults once occupied the existing space. To retrofit a concrete bunker into an outpatient center was no easy task for the project team.

The building is one of the largest medical office leases ever in San Diego County. Protea Properties worked with the Veterans Administration to sign a 20-year lease for the existing space. The Outpatient Center is the first of its kind for Southern California.

The Outpatient Center houses an array of medical services including dental, physical therapy, women’s health, prosthetics, mental health, radiology, eye clinic, pathology, and audiology.

The new addition and remodel to the existing spa building includes the addition of a salon, retail space, 3 new treatment rooms, back of house staff areas, additional gym space, and the remodel of the men’s and women’s locker rooms. Exquisite interior finishes include French limestone, live sawn white oak, Polanco Mexican tile, Douglas fir doors, terra cotta tile and numerous luxury amenities.

Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa was named the No. 1 Best Resort in California & No. 4 Best Resort in the US by “US News & World Report’s 2021 Hotel Rankings".

The project team was careful to not disturb the guests staying at the resort. Work continues on the new Rein Bar adjacent to the existing pool to provide culinary and beverage delights.

The Scripps Clinic Encinitas Medical Office building tenant improvement completed ahead of schedule two months from the original schedule deadline. Accelerating the schedule was a team effort by all involved, including adding Dale Macy, Superintendent to help expedite the construction. The building did not have any freight elevator or means of access. A portion of the curtain-wall was removed and the team constructed a dance-floor scaffold and ramp into each floor to quickly load materials into the space. The new medical office spaces included Family Medicine, OBGYN, Ophthalmology, Audiology, Optometry, Dermatology, Cardiology, and Neurology.

BROWN FIELD TECHNOLOGY PARK Lot A+C are complete! The project consisted of two ground up tilt-up warehouse buildings each with roughly 10,000 SF of mezzanine office spaces.

With over 229,000 SF the two buildings offer flexible design and allows for industrial, manufacturing and corporate engineering space. Unique building features include 2-story corporate atrium entries, a grand staircase with wood-look tile flooring, and wood railing and wall caps.

Raised for “Overall” Our very own Gabe Halsey participated in the Challenged Athletes Foundation - Million Dollar Challenge Ride. The 620 mile trek down the California coastline from San Francisco to San Diego is a week long cycling expedition filled with iconic scenery and camaraderie.

a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I had heard rave reviews about how amazing it is, and it didn’t disappoint. Aside from the views the coastal ride offers, the best part of the trip was the energy of the people throughout the week. It’s truly inspiring seeing people with different challenges making the same trek alongside us all week long. After my first Million Dollar Challenge, I’m grateful for all that contributed and donated, and I hope it’s not the last time I get to participate.
