Welcome to the Family

SOPHIA Pablo Lopez and Claudia are happy to announce the birth of their daughter, Sophia. She weighed 8 lbs. 10 oz. and 21 inches long.

Sophia joins big brothers Alex and Jesus.

RYLEIGH Trevor and Danielle Burnett welcomed their first baby into their lives this year. She is a healthy and beautiful baby girl. Mom and baby are doing well.

SHEPARD Mitchell and Natalie had their second baby boy this past year.

At birth Sheppard weighed in at a whopping 9 lbs. 2 oz. Mom and baby are doing well.

Welcome to the Team Lusardi welcomes Steven Navas to the team. Steven joined our Dublin Office in July where he works supporting the FDA Alameda project in his role as a Project Engineer. Since graduating from San Jose State with his Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering, Steven has worked in the construction industry as a lead estimator and project manager for Della Maggiore Stone. We are excited to have him on the team.

Please welcome Melissa Balliett to the Lusardi team. Melissa grew up here in North County and has been working with the County of San Diego for the last seven years. She is excited to join the Lusardi team and shared that her childhood softball team sponsor was Lusardi Construction Company. Melissa has been training to take over benefits administration for us here at LCC and will assist with other Human Resource related tasks. Welcome aboard Melissa!

Julie Muramoto joined us as Receptionist and Administrative Assistant to Chris Hess. Julie possesses an impressive background as an Operations Specialist working with clients, handling event planning and providing administrative and organizational support to organizations.

We are excited to have Julie on the Lusardi team and she is equally excited to join us. Her work station will be next to Ms. Judy in the lobby.

Please welcome our newest mechanic, Randon Hine a southern California native. He is a former marine and combat veteran. He is married and expecting a child mid 2019! Please welcome him aboard and thank him for his service.

A Word From...

Luke Brown - Safety Manager This year we were recognized by the American Builders and Contractors (ABC) with the 2018 STEP Silver Award for safety excellence. In addition, Lusardi Construction has had our Experience Modification Rate (EMR) lowered from 86 to 76, (the lower the score the better!) with 100 being average by Zurich, our Workman’s Compensation Insurance.

We encourage employees to report all injuries when they happen and to point out situations they feel could be a potential hazard. We are learning as a company from past situations and experiences with our weekly safety meetings “Lessons Learned.” Please contact me if you have something you think our employees could benefit from.

Our goal as a company is for all employees to return home safely each night. We will continue to educate our employees through First Aid/CPR Training (see picture on the right), Forklift Training and OSHA compliance training to ensure we have a safe place to work.

Ryan Meagher was promoted to Senior Project Manager and is currently managing the ongoing Del Mar Highlands Town Center project and formerly The Plunge at Belmont Park. Great job Ryan!

Gabe Halsey was promoted to Senior Project Manager and is currently managing the FDA Alameda project in northern California and the FDA Lenexa project in Kansas. Congratulations Gabe!

Congratulations to Collin Howell on his promotion to Project Manager. Collin started with Lusardi in 2013 as Project Engineer working on several Carmax projects. Currently he is working on the Plunge Project in San Diego.

We are pleased to announce the promotion of Shane Melbo to Project Manager. He started as a Project Engineer in 2013. He recently completed work at San Marcos Middle School and is currently working on The Campus Building III. Congrats Shane!

Congratulations to Ryan O’Connor on his promotion to Assistant Project Manager. Ryan worked on several Carmax and Lumber Liquidators projects with Boyd Suemnick. Ryan was also part of the BIGHORN team.

Congratulations to Ron Johnson on his promotion to Superintendent. Ron’s first project was with Mike Spurgeon in 2006 on the Ontario Vineyard Business Park. Ron has been involved in many of the Inland Empire projects over the years. His contribution to the recently opened modular hotel in Hawthorne was a big success. Great work Ron!

Chris Clark was promoted to Superintendent. Chris joined us in 1996 and has worked as a labor, finisher, carpenter crafts through his career. Chris has been a big part of projects like the America Center and is currently on the Pacific Highland Ranch project. We are proud of his contribution to the team! Congratulations Chris!

John Shirk was promoted to Superintendent. John was 19 when he joined us at the Chris Woods Escondido project in 2004. He has been involved in many of our automotive projects across the US, and has recently taken on a big challenge of being part of the FDA Laboratory in Kansas! Thank you John for your contribution!

Randy Cordova was promoted to Assistant Project Manager. He worked on the BIGHORN project team with Nick Novak and Lance Rieman and is currently working on BIGHORN Summer Work project and Moreno Valley Skilled Nursing Facility.

Brent Frickey was promoted to Assistant Project Manager. Brent has worked on the CHP Chico and FDA Alameda projects with Gabe Halsey.

This One Thing You Use All the Time May be Covered with Flu Bacteria: With peak flu season approaching quickly, you know how important it is to constantly wash your hands and disinfect shared spaces, but there’s probably one thing you’ve been neglecting to disinfect: your cellphone.

Researchers from the University of Arizona found that cellphones carried 10 times more bacteria than most toilet seats. And, what’s even more alarming is the fact that cellphones are the perfect vehicle for spreading germs to other people. That’s why it’s so important to take the proper steps, like disinfecting your phone daily, using hand sanitizer and practicing good hygiene habits, to keep your phone germ-free this flu season.

WHAT WE ARE BUILDING

As 2018 comes to a close and we give a fond farewell to our 60th Anniversary year, let’s take a moment to reflect on our client relationships we have nurtured along the way.

Lusardi Construction grew from its infancy and through the early 1970’s completing projects with the military and local schools that were won through competitive “hard bid” processes that left little opportunity to truly develop personal client relationships. In the late 1970’s, we were fortunate to build a relationship with Bernie Gilmore (Mitsui Fudosan), that resulted in more than 100 projects focused in the Vista area around Sycamore and Business Park Drive, and Don Shaw (Shaw Properties) with tilt-up business parks in San Diego and Orange Counties. The 1980’s saw Bill Davis (Davis Development) and Mike Murphy (California Structures and later, Murphy Development) join the “repeat-client list” with 40+ projects centered geographically in Orange County and Otay Mesa, respectively. During the 1990’s, the list grew with Mike Ibe (Western Devcon and later, Easterly Government Properties) with another 20+ projects focused on Federal Governmentleased design/build facilities. In the 2000’s, the list grew exponentially with the addition of John Tworoger (Aspen Properties) with work alternating between San Diego and Austin, TX. Legacy Partners (and

later, Steelwave) joined in with projects primarily in the Bay Area.

Venture Corporation let us learn how to build the same building across the country 20+ times. Steve Knappenberger (Santa Barbara Auto Group) introduced us to Roger Penske (Penske Automotive Group), who took us across the western U.S. multiple times with their keystone development being Chauncey Ranch Autopark in Scottsdale, AZ. San Marcos Unified School District leans on Lusardi to deliver when a project “has” to be done right and on-time. As we near the end of the 2010’s, we celebrate Lumber Liquidators joining the list with stores across the country. Carmax continues to grow their stores with our assistance. We enjoy continued opportunities in the desert with Toscana and Bighorn. Protea Properties continues the relationship on projects ranging from retail redevelopment to Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa to mixed-use developments in San Diego proper.

Everyone can attest that building and nurturing long-term relationships is very seldom, if ever, easy. Whether personal or professional, they require both parties to be humble, fair, understanding, sincere, honest, respectful, and know that one party may have put the other ahead for the relationship to continue. In the end, the journey is worth it.

Good Bye 2018 ~ Welcome 2019 2019 looks very promising, with nice backlog and still more projects (and relationships) on the horizon.

Recently Completed

BIGHORN GOLF CLUB PALM DESERT, CA

In just 16 short months, demolition of the existing old clubhouse and new construction of an incredibly modern Clubhouse located 1,000 feet above the valley floor was completed! BIGHORN was ready to impress with its 80,000 square foot breathtaking Clubhouse which encompasses Four Private Luxury Penthouses - providing 5,000+ square feet each and offers the ultimate in a concierge lifestyle. This project entailed the use of Two Million Pounds of Structural Steel, One Million Pounds of Rebar, 95,000 Cubic Feet of Concrete, and so much more.

Leaving nothing to the imagination, this ultra-exclusive Golf Club in Palm Desert incorporates exceptional amenities, magnificent surrounding views of the mountains, valleys, and an artfully designed 18-hole golf course under the picturesque blue sky.

LUSARDI BUILDS...

AMERICA CENTER PHASE II SAN JOSE, CA

With San Jose, California constantly expanding, Lusardi Construction Company recently completed another big project and upgrade for the area. The America Center Phase II adds two new six-story Class A buildings totaling 420,000 sf of office space and a parking garage.

Beautifully incorporated into this phase of development are amenities that accommodate today’s fast pace and tech savvy world. Features consist of an amenities center, café, and gym. The outdoor area includes sports courts and gathering spaces for those who like to enjoy the San Jose fresh air and sun. Another new feature that makes the buildings unique is the use of View Dynamic Glass; an active glass that transitions with the rays of the sun to help minimize energy consumption. This project has achieved LEED® Gold certification with the U.S. Green Building Council.

Community CHALLENGED ATHLETE FOUNDATION Lusardi had another great turnout this year. It was the 25th annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge (SDTC) and Lusardi’s fifth year as a Presenting Sponsor!

For those who have participated in the past, you have seen how involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life. You have also seen the impact of TEAM LUSARDI through our presence and participation at the La Jolla Cove event, and every year our participation grows.

Thank you to all of the individuals and families that participated in this wonderful event.

PADRES PEDAL THE CAUSE Padres Pedal the Cause is a one-day event which raises funds for cancer research in San Diego. It is a community of cancer fighters including survivors, families, children, doctors and researchers. With the support of passionate fundraisers, sponsors, and volunteers, they are able to raise much-needed funding for life-saving cancer research through their annual challenge that includes four cycling courses, spin classes, and a 5K walk/run, all finishing centerfield at Petco Park!

This year was Lusardi’s biggest year yet in participation. Team Lusardi had a total of 39 employees and family members take on the challenges. For the bike portion team members chose from 4 courses, the Coronado Classic (25 miles), Olympic Challenge (55 miles), Honey Spring Heartbreaker (88 miles), and the The Century (100 miles). For the walk/run portion, participants had to complete a 5K course. Great job Team Lusardi!

HELP THE CHILDREN Team Lusardi, Thank You to those who participated in the 3rd Annual Help the Children – Toys For Tacos event on November 19th. You all should be very proud! With your $2 weekly deduction, additional toys, movie passes and money received that day, we successfully reached our goal of $11,500!

Your generous donations went to purchase toys for four North County charities to help families in need during the holidays!
