What’s your reading diet?
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about a concept I heard at this year’s WORD Festival in Christchurch. Novelist and New Zealand Reading Ambassador Kate de Goldi introduced the ‘reading diet’ during a panel talk and it’s played on my mind ever since. It’s essentially a balanced consumption of information to encourage exploration and education, just like a wide range of food benefits physical health. When I researched more, I found the metaphor goes even further. You want to limit ‘waste’ by reading articles to their end, and swap ‘junk food’ or shallow content for reading which stimulates critical thinking. ‘Snackable’ or light reading is a thing too, for short bursts of dopamine.
Right now, I’m reading Bergdorf Blondes, a novel by longtime Vogue contributor, author, and fashion writer

Plum Sykes. Shock horror, it’s right up my alley. If not that, it’s an article from my bible (Vogue Magazine), and I am looking forward to reading Priscilla Presley’s latest memoir Softly As I Leave You: Life After Elvis, which I purchased at her Christchurch show earlier this month. So, while it’s reading I thoroughly enjoy, I’m probably in need of a few di erent perspectives.
Ahead of festive season, I think the reading diet is worth considering. In between wrapping presents and stirring cranberry sauce on the stove, we hope to sneak a few pockets of time to dive into a good book. If you can use these to be more intentional and learn something new simultaneously, you should.
While on the topic of festivities, you’ll notice this issue has a rather festive slant. Out of the 26 issues we produce yearly, it feels reasonable to lean into Christmas – and right now we could all do with a reminder to celebrate those around us. So deck the halls, lay the table and give the best gifts with your inside guide (hint, that could also include donating to charities in high demand this time of year).
Turn the page and find interviews with former All Black Aaron Mauger and wife Amy, and John Britten’s daughter Isabelle Weston, festive fashion favourites, inventive ways to gift delicious treats, the latest topics in health, and more – a reasonable reading diet, if you will. If you want to know more about Kate de Goldi’s fascinating mind, read deputy editor Tamara Pitelen’s August interview, Read or Rust, on metropol.co.nz.

DUX DINE’S
new gameplan
Aaron and Amy Mauger’s journey together is one of resilience and hard work, Metropol editor Nina Tucker discovers. While the former All Black travelled nationally and internationally for test matches or coaching gigs, Amy was the rock at home raising their four children. Now they look down the barrel of a brand new challenge – giving the iconic Christchurch establishment Dux Dine a fresh lease on life.
Alittle over 24 years ago, Aaron and Amy Mauger met on a Wednesday night at a jumping Zanzibar Merivale. As I sit in the sun in Dux Dine’s garden bar – the home of this new chapter – the pair shares how their journey began. Earlier this year, they had enjoyed lunch in the same spot during a spontaneous visit. Today, they’re the excited new owners of the Christchurch venue with a legacy so engrained it’s been a careful and somewhat controversial takeover, but one they’ve embraced with eyes wide open. The pair are leaning into what they do best, seizing opportunity and playing to their strengths.
From its Mediterranean diet roots to fresh, diverse new flavours and meat on the menu, the pair are identifying Dux Dine’s gaps and future opportunities – catering for current and prospective customers seeking an extended

o ering from the previously pescatarian-based menu.
“The strength and unity of our relationship, our life experiences and professional career experiences in teams and leadership have helped us learn fast and adapt,” Aaron says.
“You hear a lot of stories about how hard hospitality is, yet you also hear lots of positive stories. We have friends in the industry who have been generous with sharing their knowledge to give us a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges,” Aaron says. “The good thing is people are still looking for quality social and dining experiences. Our focus now is to capitalise on our amazing venue here and enhance the dining experience.”
The pair recognise themselves as fresh meat in the city’s competitive hospitality industry with experience in only “conservative” investing prior, making sure to be mindful of the existing clientele. “It’s been their home for a long time,” Aaron says. Between learning the correct way to set a table to communicating with a team of 15 ranging personalities, it’s been one incredibly daunting yet fulfilling journey so far.
How can managing a legacy
Christchurch restaurant in an unforgiving hospitality industry and four young kids not take a toll on this power couple?
“Read the cues,” Aaron laughs. “And have a box of tissues on standby for those overwhelming moments,” he says. “I get stressed out, and then Aaron puts it all into perspective,” Amy adds. A good chunk of the pair’s strategy derives from Aaron’s experience as a professional sportsperson. “What I’ve learnt over time is not to get stuck looking back or sideways. Swivel your head back around and look forward. That’s how you see the next opportunity or the solution.”
“I’m not here as much as Amy,”
WINNING FORMULA
Just six months in – much of that with few changes to the external experience – Aaron and Amy have seen most sides of the industry. They’ve learnt to trust: their team, the process, each other. “As is the way in life, hospitality is not a linear path. You’ve just got to move with the tough times and savour the good times,” Aaron says.
Building existing and new relationships with premium local suppliers is key – and no trouble to Aaron, who has what feels like a PhD in networking. He grew up in a grounded family (even with uncles Graeme and Stephen Bachop and brother Nathan Mauger as professional rugby players), and from 18 years old gained access to the Crusaders community including fellow players and world class coaching from the likes of Robbie Deans, Steve Hansen and Wayne Smith. “A large part of my upbringing as a young man was being surrounded by quality human beings from family members to coaches and mentors. These people shaped me and gave me a consistent platform to chase my dreams. I try my best to apply that to all parts of life – as a husband, a father, a coach, a mentor. Amy kept me strong and stable when the rigours of the sporting world were at their most demanding. She’s always had my back and I owe everything to her which is why I just do what I’m told when it comes to this business – she’s the real boss here. I’m more in the support role this time around.”

“Consistency is the winning formula,” Amy says. It’s the thing that comes first in the Mauger’s new game plan – and that commitment extends to their four children. “We wanted to stick closer to home, raise our family in Christchurch for the foreseeable future and have the ability to spend more time with them all,” Aaron says. What’s not consistent is the pair’s sleeping patterns.
While Aaron strives to keep up his morning exercise routine when he’s home, “Amy has had to kiss goodbye to her sleep-ins.”
Aaron admits, who currently spends around one-third of the year overseas coaching Fiji’s national rugby team and has coached teams from the Crusaders to Moana Pasifika. “So it’s easy for me to get excited with the strategic planning and new concepts but Amy and our team do all the hard work here. They provide a balanced lens with realistic objectives, processes and timeframes.” That means no cutting corners. “We want to o er a great experience and quality product, from the moment you walk in the door to what’s served on your plate,” Amy finishes.

Aaron understands the “leverage” his career a ords him, yet the pair are taking an organic path to harness repeat custom and loyalty – and they don’t hide behind the frills of being ‘the owners’. “I like to be merit-based,” the humble ex-All Black says. It’s been a game of patience, “not dragging people through the door,” yet one they hope pays o . Aaron and Amy see Dux Dine as an extension of their own home and passion for entertaining, “We want people to feel like it’s home.” Sipping on a refreshing ginger beer and snacking on an antipasto platter, it certainly feels like it.
And this summer? It’s the place to be. Don’t believe me? Well, I’ll meet you at the Dux.

A beautiful Britten life

Lifestyle content creator, entertaining whizz, home makeover maestro, keen green thumb, and the daughter of the legendary John Britten, Isabelle Weston is on a quest to make every moment beautiful – especially during Christmases she can’t spend with the late visionary engineer. She shares lessons learned with Metropol editor Nina Tucker.
The time we had with him still feels far too short,” Isabelle Weston says. “His passing taught me a valuable lesson: there’s no project more important than my children. I bet he would agree.” The middle sibling of three, she was eight when cancer stole her father away. The disease struck again in Isabelle’s thirties, taking a dear friend’s life. It was a powerful wake-up call to her busy work-focused lifestyle, which mirrored her father’s relentless work ethic (“He was an incredible man, dedicated yet often absorbed by his many projects, putting in huge hours, which included the Britten bike”). “My drive was all about setting myself up for success through hard work, while family inadvertently came second,” she says.

The tragedy was a reminder that life is finite and time with family is the most important thing.
Isabelle says her pursuit to live with such purpose is not a hobby but a philosophy. In practice, “It means seeking out moments that inspire joy and curiosity, not focusing on all the negatives.” She calls this living life beautifully. Isabelle references her grandmother, and John Britten’s mother, Ruvae, who turned 100 in November. “She only stopped driving at 96, she practised and taught Ikebana, swam daily, threw parties of all wonderful manors to connect with her community and friends, these led to a wonderfully enriched life.” For Isabelle, it’s cooking, nature, exercise, crafting, conversations, co ee, and wine that fill her cup… literally.

Image: Hazel Redmond Photography
Her day begins with a swim or a run, a commitment made a few years earlier to ensure her health sticks around as reliably as her morning co ee. Wrapping up her part-time role as activity and events coordinator with the Canterbury Horticultural Society, she’s turning her focus to an exciting new project she plans to unveil next year.
Whatever the weather, Isabelle aims to fit in an hour of gardening between getting her children to and from school, “running errands, folding laundry, making beds, and all those other little tasks that keep the household ticking and waste 80% of my day.”
“I am still starving for balance and struggling to fit everything I want to do into a day. Perhaps I am too curious and enjoy being busy too much. Maybe there’s a lesson here… choosing things to work on moment by moment, not trying to do it all,” Isabelle ponders. The determination and fearless ‘dream-chaser’ genetics gifted by her father might contribute. “His influence and drive left a lasting impact on me.” Isabelle’s mother Kirsteen always told her children anything was possible with hard work and a focused mind. “This inspired me to pursue my own passions and to see challenges, including failure, as opportunities for personal growth.”
“I want to say our childhood was like any other, but it really wasn’t. Growing up with such a visionary dad was unique, though at the time, it felt normal because we didn’t know anything else. He was a very gentle guy, softly spoken and generous with his ears.”
“Our daughter Adaline has ADHD, dyslexia and digraphia, traits that run in our family. When she’s feeling down on herself or feeling left behind, I like to remind her of what our father, John Britten, accomplished despite being told he was ‘stupid’. Being smart does not mean you have to be the best at school. It’s about having passion and the drive to work towards your goal. I tell our children that their grandad would be proud of them.”
With husband Tim Weston, the pair’s restoration of the iconic Britten Stables, and her childhood home, was showcased on Grand Designs New Zealand, and their most recent renovation, their family home, has become a famed Christchurch project, winning Canterbury Supreme Renovation and Renovation over $1million at the 2025 House of the Year awards. The couple garnered a generous following on social media after documenting both renovations on Facebook and Instagram, @izzywest.co, catapulting them into the home and lifestyle spotlight. She shares one of her secrets. “First, I uncover the personality of the home or space. Some buildings are never going to suit a super modern makeover and need their heritage honoured. The second thing I think about is how I want to feel in that space.”
INSIDE A BRITTEN CHRISTMAS
An adept hand in entertaining (and a degree in project and operations management) complements her design skills. “I adore the entire process, from planning to execution, integrating my love for creating inviting spaces with entertaining.” It might be a magical unicorn birthday or Halloween-themed party for daughters Raphaela (6) and Adaline (10), or an elegant Christmas soirée for 40 guests. Isabelle’s heart sings watching people celebrate in a perfect space. The same goes this year –she wants it to be unapologetically silly. “Our Christmas tree décor sets

like Christmas vomited all over the tree,” she smiles. Silly presents, crazy costumes, and funny lawn games are all on the agenda. Her advice for those who don’t hold the same degree? “Plan. having a very helpful husband who does all the last-minute things like picking up ice, balloons, and cake also plays its part.” Nice one, Tim.
Christmas inside their home will be beautiful, no doubt. As are the words she lives by. “In essence, life is a beautiful work-in-progress.” Her father’s legacy is a reminder to cherish every moment, make a positive di erence, and “live with purpose, live life beautifully”.

Travel tailored
Award winning. Life-changing. Memory making. This is not your typical travel agency.

All this, a 20-strong team and more in House of Travel Christchurch City’s purpose-designed space nestled on Victoria Street beneath The Mayfair hotel. From the moment you step inside, you know you’ve arrived somewhere special – and that stress-free feeling continues right to the very last stop on the itinerary this team will plan for you. Searching for New Zealand’s top travel consultant and the best cruise advice in the country? You’ll find Belinda Fifield and her signature charisma at her desk planning another holiday of a lifetime. Or instead, is New Zealand’s best corporate consultant the name you’re after? Sarah Henderson’s proficiency in business travel arrangements earns her a Hall of Fame-worthy spot. Awarded in 2025 by the Travel Agents Association of New Zealand, “no other agency has ever held both awards at the same time, and we are incredibly proud. This recognition reflects a huge amount of dedication, and having the best consultants in New Zealand right here in Christchurch is something we truly celebrate,” original founder and co-owner Dave Williams says with elation.
The Christchurch City agency are in a league of their own. This team has been the catalyst behind Canterbury’s favourite holiday memories, and a trusted name in travel, for more than 30 years. Dave remains at the helm with extensive expertise across travel, groups, and events, recently joined by Megan McCall, who after 10 years in the o ce, purchased half of Dave’s shares and stepped into joint ownership.
Dave and Megan steer the ship in their new light-filled, purpose-designed Victoria Street o ce, a project fuelled by Dave’s desire to o er the very best planning experience. “I wanted to create an inviting, creative environment where clients feel welcome the moment they walk in. Designing someone’s travel is a privilege we don’t take lightly. It was important to create a space full of inspiration – somewhere that gets clients excited from the start.” The o ce is the largest House of Travel location in New Zealand, made up of a Leisure Team, a Corporate Team, and a Groups Team – giving them an unmistakable edge in a sea of travel agencies – and the capability to handle anything.
CRUISE GURUS
The Leisure Team operates at the highest level, with specialists across all sectors of travel. Belinda and Chris Fifield are the o ce’s cruise gurus, having recently fallen in love with cruising themselves. Their firsthand experience across numerous ocean and river sailings, soon to be joined by an expedition cruise, provides invaluable insight for both clients and the team.
As cruising continues to surge in popularity, most consultants in the o ce have cruised within the past 12 months, ensuring the team remains up-to-date and truly expert.
“Don’t be fooled that booking a cruise online is cheaper, or the best itinerary for you,” Dave says. From customisations and more comprehensive information to better savings, the team encourages talking with a travel agent first. “I booked it direct, but I wish I had booked it with you,” Dave recites the comment he commonly hears from clients in hindsight.
LEISURE AND LUXURY
A versatile, well-travelled and multi-cultural team sets the foundation for excellent itineraries – wherever, whenever. Senior travel specialist Kyla Strahl brings years of experience crewing on luxury superyachts, 57 countries travelled, and a unique global perspective. “Kyla has been part of the House of Travel Christchurch City team for more than 12 years,” Dave says. Canadian-born and New Zealand-bred, Kyla explored the world before joining the team, gaining unparalleled knowledge of some of the most spectacular waters and hidden corners of the globe. “Her firsthand expertise means she can recommend destinations so remote they’re hard to find on a map – yet clients return home time and time again overwhelmed by how extraordinary her suggestions turn out to be. Kyla’s ability to match travellers with truly unique experiences is one of her greatest strengths and a testament to the depth of her world experience,” Dave explains.
“We’re fortunate to have Minji Park, who was born in South Korea, has guided in Japan, and has lived in Australia and New Zealand. Her deep knowledge and passion for Japan set her apart. Minji specialises in crafting unforgettable itineraries that blend clients’ wish-list highlights with hidden gems and secret spots. As Japan’s popularity skyrockets, her biggest piece of advice is simple: go now – before it gets even busier and the exchange rate strengthens.” Her expertise transforms a great trip into a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
GROUP TRAVEL EXPERTS
House of Travel Christchurch City’s Groups and Events Team, led by Lou Stephens and Sharon Rapsey, specialise in creating unforgettable packages to major events around the world. Whether the Australian Open is on your bucket list or the Singapore Grand Prix is a must-do experience, they can craft the perfect itinerary for you. “We currently have exclusive netball

packages to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow – so if you want to be part of the excitement, just get in touch. Lou and Sharon can also secure fantastic packages to top-selling shows such as the Neil Diamond musical and the blockbuster Michael Jackson musical in Australia,” Megan shares with excitement.
From world-class sporting events to extraordinary theatre productions, this team has access to an extensive range of experiences. “Whatever your passion, our Groups and Events Team can get you there.”
Solidifying their lead in the industry, the team played a pivotal role in transporting New Zealand athletes to and from the Olympic and Commonwealth Games since 2014. During the pandemic, they chartered exclusive Air New Zealand flights to get athletes to Tokyo, then worked with the New Zealand Government to secure MIQ hotel space and deliver sporting equipment so athletes could continue training. “We are also delivering travel packages for the Edinburgh Tattoo in Auckland this February and managing accommodation and transport logistics for 1000 sta ,” Megan adds. Capability? Unmatched.
“Exceptional customer service is at the heart of everything we do. It’s always clients first,” Dave says. As for solo travel? “We know there are many reasons people choose to travel solo, and we celebrate every single one of them,” Megan says. We’ve partnered with trusted suppliers to secure fantastic solo rates, so you can explore the world without paying double. From a cruise, guided tour, or once-in-a-lifetime adventure, we have options designed with solo travellers in mind.”
“We understand that the small details matter, whether you’re travelling for business, leisure, or a major event, we take pride in delivering a seamless, personalised experience every time.” But the big di erence when you’re on holiday and encounter an issue? “We o er a 24/7 support service, ensuring that if anything unexpected arises during your travels, you can reach someone from our o ce immediately. No call centres, no delays – just real, experienced consultants who know you and your itinerary and can step in to help straight away.”
“Being the trusted first choice for so many Christchurch travellers is a privilege, and we are committed to honouring that with every trip we design.”

Play with prints Play with prints
Summer is the season to be bold.
Mixing prints is less about rules and more about balance, contrast, and a bit of fun,” says the team at Kiwi retailer Zebrano. With styles from New Zealand, Australian, and international designers in sizes 14 plus, they know how to make prints work for every mood and moment – and share their top tips for summer trends.
Contrast is key
Pair a bold large-scale print with a smaller one to create harmony while keeping your look dynamic. Opposites attract, so try organic prints with geometrics or balance bold patterns with solid colours.
Connect through colour
Link prints through a shared hue, even one tone in common can tie two prints together. Black background prints look amazing with black basics, while white background prints pop when paired with white or a colour pulled from the print.
Complete the look
Earrings, necklaces, bangles, bags, shoes – there’s plenty of room to play. Highlight colours in your print, add structure with a plain blazer or denim jacket, and remember your hair and makeup are accessories too. 1 2 3
“Most importantly, don’t overthink it. If you feel fabulous, confidence makes any print work.” Pop in for a style session with the Christchurch team at 171 Victoria St – Zebrano’s style gurus will help you find pieces that express your style and make you feel wonderful.

Jewellery reimagined

When beloved broadcaster Miriama Kamo wanted to breathe new life into treasured jewellery, she turned to Christchurch jeweller Brett Liddle.
This particularly meaningful project saw Brett handmake a ring that would connect Miriama to her late father – a piece created to hold his memory in a modern contemporary style. “Jewellery carries our history,” the founder of BL Jewellery says. “I love taking pieces that have been forgotten or tucked away and turning them into something modern, wearable, and deeply meaningful. When a piece holds emotional weight, like Miriama’s, the transformation becomes incredibly special.”
With more than 30 years at the bench, Brett has built a reputation for remodelling and creating oneo designs with a highly personal approach. As an independent, self-employed jeweller, every remodel begins with a conversation – a collaborative design process where clients can share the sentimental history and ideas for their new creation.
From inherited rings and broken chains to a single earring looking for its mate, Brett sees potential in every piece. His focus is on reusing existing gold and stones wherever possible, creating pieces that honour the past but can be made to reflect your current style. “Statement pieces that can be passed onto future generations,” he explains.
Using existing materials not only keeps things sustainable, it’s a clever way to add value with gold on the rise. Rather than ending up with something mass-produced, you walk away with a one-of-a-kind piece crafted just for you – the type you can’t find on a store shelf. Recognised for creating one-o designs from sentimental and inherited pieces, Brett brings artistry, precision, and attention to detail to every remodel. If your jewellery is ready for its next chapter, get in touch with Brett on 027 636 6209.
Sometimes the best new piece is the one you already own – it just needs to be reimagined.

great foods for gut health

From the moment we’re born, our gut microbiome’s role in the body begins. There’s still much to learn about the trillions of micro-organisms – bacteria, viruses and fungi – that exist in our gastrointestinal tract, but the science has already revealed some fascinating associations between them and the healthy functioning of just about every organ in the body. Healthy Food Guide reveals five of the best foods for a healthy gut.
Ahealthy gut can do everything from improving immunity and sleep quality to protecting against depression and bowel cancer. One study showed that when your gut is in good shape it can make it even easier to make healthier food choices. The good news is, it’s possible to start improving your gut microbiome in a matter of days. A healthy gut contains a diverse range of microbes – and a good way to achieve this is to eat at least 30 di erent plant foods each week. One study of more than 10,000 participants found those who did get the full 30 had much more diverse gut bacteria than people who consumed just 10 types of plant foods weekly. Well-known for supporting gut health, the Mediterranean-style diet is plant-focused, contains moderate amounts of whole-grains, dairy and healthy fats from fish and olive oil, limits ultra-processed foods and includes just a little red meat. Thirty plants a week may sound overwhelming – yet it’s easy if you follow the right eating pattern.
Five gut-healthy foods
1. Seeds and nuts
Nuts and seeds are a delicious way to increase the variety and quantity of plant foods to feed your gut. They’re fibre-rich and have the added benefit of containing heart-healthy fats and satisfying protein. Seed mixes containing pumpkin, sesame, hemp, sunflower, chia, and flaxseeds are perfect as a topping for salads and cooked vegetables. Or simply add a handful of mixed nuts.
2. Whole grains
Whole grains, like cereals and wholegrain breads, pasta and rice, are essential for gut health. They contain insoluble fibre that helps to hold on to water, creating bulkier and softer stools. Additionally, insoluble fibre speeds up the passage of food through the digestive system. Be sure to include higher-fibre varieties of staple foods in your diet daily to help calm digestive issues.
3. Fermented foods
Recent research confirms fermented food like kimchi, kefir, kombucha, yoghurt and sauerkraut contain probiotics – live bacteria that have health benefits and can survive the digestive process to boost gut health. In a Stanford University study, people who ate a diet high in fermented foods enjoyed an increase in microbial diversity.
4.
Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are a good source of both insoluble fibre and soluble fibre, which feed our good gut bacteria and aid digestion. Have at least five portions a day (ideally more) of di erent types and colours and include the skins where they are edible. If cost is a barrier, rest assured, frozen is just as nutritious as fresh when it comes to fruit and vegetables. Canned is also a good option.
5. Pulses and legumes
The Mediterranean-style diet includes plenty of legumes –think lentils, chickpeas, edamame and beans. These are packed with soluble fibre, which is fermented in the large bowel by beneficial bacteria. These ‘friendly’ bacteria are essential for maintaining the health of your gut. Soluble fibre also helps to lower blood cholesterol levels, making these superfoods doubly beneficial. You can add lentils, beans, or split peas to salads, casseroles, or even use them to make meat dishes go further.
5 signs your gut health needs a reboot
Unfortunately, there isn’t one specific measure or test you can take to assess your gut health, but there are some signs to look out for:
1. Digestive symptoms like bloating, heartburn, constipation or diarrhoea
2. Sleep disturbance including trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
3. Fatigue or lower than usual energy levels
4. Periods of high stress, low mood or anxiety
5. Frequent infections and illnesses that are persistent or hard to shake.

Who doesn’t love fudge? It’s a rich, versatile, indulgent treat, perfect for gifting. With Christmas fast approaching, gift this Russian Fudge to your loved ones, or enjoy it for yourself – we won’t tell.
METHOD
1. Grease and line a cake tin with baking paper.
INGREDIENTS
• 3 1/2 cups white sugar
• 200g sweetened condensed milk
• 125g butter
• 1/2 cup milk
• 3 Tbsp golden syrup

• 2 tsp vanilla essence
2. Place all the ingredients except the vanilla into a medium saucepan. Warm over low heat for about 10 to 15 minutes until the sugar has dissolved.
3. Bring to a gentle boil and cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring to prevent the mixture from burning, until it reaches the soft ball stage.
4. Remove from heat and add vanilla.
5. Cool for 5 minutes, before beating with an electric mixer for around 10 minutes until the fudge is creamy and thick.
6. Pour into prepared tin and leave to cool, then refrigerate until set. Cut when cold.
7. Divide into gifting portions and arrange in jars for gifting, then decorate with ribbon and a note.

Treat me!
You’ve probably heard of the foliage wreath, the meringue wreath, and maybe even the antipasto wreath, but have you discovered the treat wreath?
The treat wreath is perfect for all things Christmas, whether you need to bring a plate for a shared lunch, use it as a feature dessert, or wrap it in cellophane as a personalised gift. What’s even better is that you
MAKES ONE PLATE INGREDIENTS
• 2 marshmallow biscuits (or any chocolate-covered biscuit), drizzled with icing and sprinkles
• 3 macarons, flavour of your choice, or a mix
• 4 coconut bliss balls
• 4 Reese’s Pieces (cut in half if you like)
• 3 Ferrero Rochers
• 20 assorted chocolate-dipped macadamias
• 1 Mars Bar (broken into chunks)
• 4 white chocolate-covered biscuits (or cover your own)
• 2 Tbsp desiccated coconut, to garnish
METHOD
get to choose how much time and money you want to invest. You could handmake your own sweet treats, purchase from the store, or simply use what’s already in your pantry. Fruit, nuts, chocolate, baking, candy – the possibilities are endless.
1. Begin by placing the largest treats evenly around the edge of the plate (these include the Reese’s Pieces and the chocolate-covered biscuits).
2. Next, assemble the medium-sized treats like the macarons and marshmallow biscuits – try to make some overlap with larger treats, while also evenly spacing them.
3. Place the coconut bliss balls, Ferrero Rochers, Mars Bar chunks, and chocolate-dipped macadamia nuts on top and in between the other treats, keeping an empty circle shape in the centre of the plate.
4. Lastly, sprinkle desiccated coconut over your sweet creation.
GIFTING MADE EASY
Stuck for gift ideas for that special colleague, friend, or family member? Simple. Buy a cute plate you know they’ll love and build a treat wreath on top. Wrap the entire plate in a large sheet of cellophane, enough to bunch it together and tie a bow around the top. Add a personalised note, and voila.

A rebranded favourite
This local favourite has rebranded into a homely haven to be enjoyed by all.

Previously Sprig & Fern Merivale, The Little Taphouse’s refurbishment refurbishment has created a space for growth, while still providing the same great service locals love. “We are now stocking 18 taps of Emerson’s beer,” says bar and restaurant owner, Wendy Roigard. “So we are just about all Emersons, with the odd Alcoholic Ginger Beer and Speights tap.”
There has also been a television added to the bar area, which will be regularly used to show sporting events.

available to hire out for the evening, or during non-open hours in the day time.
Locals love The Little Taphouse for its friendly nature and atmosphere. Sta turnover is low, and the owners’ passion has only grown stronger.
Introducing its new summer menu, the team are now taking bookings for Christmas Functions.
While the space is a lot di erent to what it was, it remains dog-friendly, and customers are still greeted by owners Craig and Wendy. The two function rooms out the back are littletaphouse.co.nz

EL FARO CAFÉ & EATERY Ferrymead
Taking the cake
This little local gem in Riccarton is a popular hotspot for those seeking great coffee, delicious food, and a warm welcome... not to mention their in-demand homemade Christmas cakes.
At Mandeville Street Kitchen in Riccarton, the festive season is well and truly underway – and that means one thing: Christmas cakes. Made by specialty baker Tash Grieve of Shortcrumb, these rich, brandy-soaked beauties have become something of a local legend.
“The fruit’s been soaking in brandy for almost a month, and Tash’s handmade peel is already done,” says café owner Sarah-Jane Garden. “She is about to start baking, and her Christmas cakes are to die for. One year, my husband and I, with another couple, ate a whole one between us in a single sitting.”
In the years since opening in 2020, Mandeville Street Kitchen has become a firm favourite for Christchurch locals seeking great co ee, fresh homemade food, and warm hospitality. “We’re often told our café has that ‘old school’ feel,” Sarah-Jane says. “We work hard to keep things friendly, fast, and beautifully tidy. People travel across town for our famous date scones and club sandwiches.”
This year, the team is also busy with Christmas catering for o ce gettogethers and workplace celebrations. “We love being part of people’s festive season, it’s such a special time,” says Sarah-Jane. “Let us make your Christmas work lunch easy.”
Orders for Tash’s limited-edition Christmas cakes close on 15 December, and there’s often a waiting list so get in quick. Call 021 258 9734 or drop in to 4/57 Mandeville Street, Monday to Friday from 7am to 4pm.

Christmas house Inside a

Experts
We
Christchurch florist Millie MacAlpine found a way to lean into her festive obsession after designing a home with sweeping staircases and eight-metrehigh ceilings set on six acres of rustic gardens.
Aself-proclaimed ‘Chris-a-holic’ (which you will come to endorse), Millie MacAlpine has always adored Christmas time. Designing and building the aforementioned property on her parents' land, Greystones, only fueled the fire. “My Christmas visions were in overload, the house really lends itself to next level Christmas decorating,” she says. Hosting friends and family sparked chatter, and Millie’s joy for entertaining, and Greystones Christmas House Tours evolved.
Millie learnt to cater for the “bigger and better” expectations of tour guests, who want to see Christmas in its extremity compared to how they decorate at home. “More is more in our house,” she laughs. With that, and her creative imagination, Millie’s name became synonymous with extravangantly designed and decorated spaces – and some 20 trees – which capture the essence of an exuberant, cheerful Christmas. She found her forté, and her tours flaunt it.
Influenced by incoming trends across fashion and colour, and with bits of inspiration jotted down year-round, Millie fuses modern and traditional looks together, weaving history and generational sentiment. A touch of rustic charm to match the property is the final stitch in the fabric. “The decorating takes a good couple of weeks, but also never ends, as my overactive creative mind is always seeing new ideas and tweaking the existing setup.”
INTERIÉURS ANCIENS
If there’s any time to be excessive, it’s at Christmas – but for the beginner, festive styling can be overwhelming. Millie shares her four top tips to decorate tastefully, yet like a pro. Search Greystones on Facebook for this year's décor.
1. Invest: If you’re starting a Christmas collection, it’s always nice to buy the more beautiful, albeit expensive ornaments, that will last a lifetime.
2. Foundations: You always need a good, solid base, especially at the bottom of your tree so it looks full. I always add extra branches to my trees for a lush e ect.
3. Texture and depth: Use ribbons, fabric, feathers, artificial flowers, bunting… things that will help to add interest, texture and depth to your tree and spaces.
4. Lights, lights, lights: don’t underestimate luminosity. Fairylights are magical and not just for Christmas, I leave some up all year round.

Before we merry make, we decorate. These key elements still leave room for personal preference and make styling your festive tablescape simple.

REMEMBER: Christmas isn’t one size fits all – it’s entirely interpretive. Ignore the traditional customs and ask what Christmas could look like if it was all up to you. Utilise your favourite themes and colour palettes to invite the festivities in an organic way. More thoughtful, more time consuming –but you’ll have far more fun waking up and celebrating on Christmas surrounded by styling that’s original to you. As the South Island’s largest accredited dealer for the highly rated Aqua Technics Pools, NOVAspace provides comprehensive service – from consultation and design to installation and landscaping, all with transparent pricing and no hidden costs. “We are the largest installer in the South Island, with pools installed from Kaikōura to the deep south,” says Chris.
Upgrade your lifestyle
“Our Aqua Technics pool shells are the best quality pre-made fibreglass options available in New Zealand, and our service is second to none.” Manufactured in Australia, the pool shells are ISO certified and feature ColourGuard technology – an antifade surface finish embedded during production. Backed by a lifetime structural warranty, these pools o er long-term value and superior durability.

The company’s gallery of past projects provides excellent inspiration for clients seeking a custom aesthetic.
Dedicated personal service
A typical pool installation takes about seven days from start to finish. Full landscaping may take up to 12 weeks, depending on the scope of the project. Chris remains closely involved with clients at every stage – from initial consultation and design to consents, installation, and project management. “I pride myself on being hands-on throughout the process. Nothing is signed o until it meets my exacting standards.”
Built to last
In a world of evolving norms and everchanging trends, one thing remains… furniture. Whether buying new or digging around second-hand stores, buying high quality furniture is essential.
At McDonald and Hartshorne, the team value quality, New Zealand made furniture. “Furniture should be an investment,” says administration manager Neke McDonald. “The bones of a piece are the most important.” Solid ‘bones’ and premium materials mean furniture can be restored and passed down through generations.
Older furniture tends to have been made better, which is beneficial for restoration and reupholstery. When furniture is fully restored, it is stripped back to its bare frame, and then built back up. At McDonald and Hartshorne, this involves replacing springs and foam and carefully selecting new fabrics with one goal: to honour the original structure of the piece, while giving it new life.

Family heirlooms are older and well made, and have strong sentimental value. “Client’s restore family pieces because it’s a reminder of their past. You remember sitting there with your grandmother and your grandfather, you remember the symbolic meaning,” Neke explains. Quality furniture carries stories of homes, families, and the memories passed between them – it’s a privilege to restore pieces decades on.
When shopping for furniture, feel for a solid frame and look for timeless designs. Invest in New Zealandmade furniture at McDonald and Hartshorne’s online showroom. From bedside tables and headboards to tallboys and dressers, you’ll find a plethora of furniture opportunity. Choosing wellmade furniture is not only sustainable, but ensures that pieces remain functional and beautiful for years to come.

Gifting time? Gift time.

The dilemma of what to gift those special people around you isn’t just looming – it’s arrived. The almost impossible balancing act of giving a gift that is thoughtful, exciting, and not a repeat of something they already have is a tale as old as time. Our answer? Gift an experience. Booking an enjoyable experience is the right choice in a season where free time is scarce. Plus, it makes it that much easier to make plans and keep them. Loosely planned co ee dates fall through much easier than a pre-booked jewellery-making class with mum, or paint and sip with your girlfriends.
Crafting things with your own hands is proven to release feel-good endorphins, and there is no better place to try something new than the supportive environment of a workshop or class with someone you love by your side. Best case? You walk out with a final product you can proudly display. Worst-case scenario, you create a special memory together to look back at and laugh.
Need inspiration?
• Pick your own flowers: Get outside, soak up the sun, and come home with a gorgeous bouquet of handpicked blooms. Prebbleton Peonies o ers ‘pick your own’ events throughout the summer season.
• Paint & Sip: Limited artistic ability aside, it’s hard not to enjoy an evening spent with a paint brush in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. At Pinot and Picasso, options range from festive creations to MAMMA MIA! night.
• Pinch & Sip: Cup of tea more your style? Consider having your morning co ee while creating tomorrow’s mug in a workshop at Stolen Bagel Pottery Studio.

DESTINATION
West Coast
The West Coast’s slogan is ‘untamed natural wilderness’, and for good reason. Oparara Arch
This easy 1.1km walk will lead you to a 35-millionyear-old limestone arch – considered to be the largest in Australasia. The one-hour return track is just one of many hidden gems in the Kahurangi National Park, just north of Karamea. The remote park also contains ancient native forest and several glowworm caves.
Be blown away by panoramic mountain and coastal views, a lighthouse, and a fur seal colony. Located near Westport, the main walk to the lighthouse is two hours return. However, it is an easy 30-minute walk to the seal colony, where they can be spotted year-round. However, the best time to find the furry pinnipeds showing o is between November and January, the breeding season.

In this immersive experience, you’ll learn about the deep significance of carving in Māori culture, design your own unique piece, and shape it with your own hands.

Choose from pounamu (jade), kōiwi (bone), or anga (shell); each with its own story and wairua (spirit). Take home more than just a carving – carry a connection to Aotearoa, its people, and its traditions.
Cycle the wild
Why ride the West Coast Wilderness Trail? Why not.
Tumbling rivers, fresh rainforest, unspoiled open waters backdropped by the Southern Alps – the Wilderness Trail o ers the best of New Zealand bundled up into one great experience. Divided into sections, it’s one of New Zealand’s most accessible trails with the option to tackle it in full over three to five days, or in bite-sized day trips.
7 REASONS TO RIDE
1. Stunning scenery: Discover rugged shorelines, ancient forests, moody lakes and cracking wetlands.
2. Smooth riding: On these flat, even trails you can sit back, relax and just soak up the scenery. Or speed along, giggling and squealing excitedly. We won’t tell.
3. For history bu s: Learn tales of the past, stay in award-winning historic accommodation, and prepare to spin a yarn or two of your own.
4. Easy eats: Craft cafés and high quality restaurants, there’s no shortage of tasty spots for the tired cyclist.
5. Experience even more: Swim, surf, shop, explore, fish, hunt, chat, walk, or choose an adventure activity for an o -track adrenaline rush.
6. Flora and fauna: The West Coast is home to some of the cheekiest, cutest, most mischievous creatures you’ll ever meet. Get amongst it.
7. Home away from home: An iconic establishment, Cowboy Paradise is now under new ownership thanks to Kelly Foster. “It’s the right place for me here, it’s just so beautiful and calming,” Kelly says about the new venture. Secluded enough from the township, yet close enough that locals can enjoy the café and views, Kelly can’t wait for the summer season to truly come into its own. Sights set on building the o -grid resort into something even more unique, you’ll find this slice of ‘paradise’ nestled in the heart of the trail with accommodation, café meals and packed lunches on request.

UP POWER

Don’t let a flat battery slow you down.
Nothing derails your day, or holiday road trip, faster than discovering a flat battery.

That’s where VP Batteries in Christchurch comes in. Locally owned and operated, with decades of experience, it’s the South Island’s trusted supplier for all vehicle battery needs, whether that’s private, commercial, agricultural, or marine.
Owner Vaughan Pirie says it’s the exceptional service his team o ers that sets them apart.

Whatever your vehicle, even campervans that require deep-cycle systems, VP Batteries has the right power solution to keep you moving. Their extensive range, expert advice, and commitment to recycling make them your go-to battery specialists.
Visit the store at 4/5 Cass Street, Sydenham, attended Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm with 24-hour callouts, or phone 0800 VPBATZ (0800 872 289). With VP Batteries, you’ll always be ready to roll.

I’ve always struggled to get excited about the SUV-come-Coupe segment. This all changed lately when I sampled the brand new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, writes Ben Selby.
Enter an elegant refresh – essentially a streamlined and sportier version of the GLE SUV – the coupe’s flowing rear section and slippery looking accents are the most obvious cues to separate it from your regular SUV. A restyled headlight and taillight cluster and Mercedes-Benz logo adorned grill all come together to make a jolly handsome car.
Inside is awash with leather and other high-quality materials. Up front, enjoy delightfully comfortable and supportive heated and ventilated seats, and centre stage sits the latest MBUX infotainment system with all fruit you would expect in a car of this type. Rear seat legroom is generous as is headroom in the rear, while boot space is a hefty 655L with the second row in place. The only trade

o with that sloping rear roofline is somewhat compromised rear visibility. That said, when you move o , it becomes obvious the GLE coupe is a rather di erent animal. Despite its 2235kg kerb weight, it feels sharper and more of a point and shoot kind of car. You still have an entirely sumptuous and supple ride thanks to its optional Airmatic adaptive suspension but there is a subtle edge to it which makes the handling just that little bit more dynamic.
Power comes from a 3.0L six-cylinder twin-turbocharged petrol engine aided by a 48v Mild Hybrid ISG system. Mated to a 9-spd auto transmission sending drive to all four wheels, hence the 4MATIC bit, you will have a decent 280kW and 500Nm of torque to play with.
It sports a low-down torque curve
and most of those 500Nm kick in early aided by the ISG hybrid system, resulting a dignified surge of power, especially in Sport mode. Flicking through the gears via the paddles is met with a slight delay on the way up but rapid going down. However, I spent most of my time in auto mode sauntering along at a steady pace, though it can do the more spirited stu when necessary.
While you can opt for the hot AMG variants for a considerable increase in grunt and addition of other go-faster kit, there is a bit of a price hike for the privilege. However, if all you want is an incredibly refined, well equipped and peppy performer with good looks and a touch of stately elegance, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

Behind the scenes
As a lifelong procrastinator I am always impressed by people who just get things done. Not all things. And not all people. Sometimes it’s important to think things through.
When I meet people who have completed things, whether that’s writing a book, running a marathon or starting a business – their achievement sticks with me. Where do they find the time? I wonder.
The answer is, of course, they don’t ‘find’ time, they just use it more purposefully. And it turns out there are plenty of people in North Canterbury doing just that. Like the two local mums who are bottling and selling their own Douglas Fir inspired perfume – find out more on page 73. Or the fabulously enthusiastic cookbook author, Sue Heazlewood, who launched her new book, Beautiful Baking, earlier this month and organised a book launch at her Mandeville home. Check out page 72 for some photos from the day.
In this issue we also catch up with local resident and pilates devotee Taryn Currie, who has just opened her third pilates studio, this one in Kaiapoi. She manages to combine this with children at primary school, training pilates instructors and practicing pilates herself three times a week. “I am busy. But there is always time for pilates,” she tells us. You can read about her on page 79.
The internet is awash with advice on productivity and getting things done. But real inspiration is closer to home. We know North Canterbury is beautiful but many of its people are also inspiring. It’s wonderful to see local people right here in North Canterbury just quietly getting on with their goals. I’m taking notes and already planning what I should achieve before the end of the year!
Pattie.

The Rangiora Early Records Society have put together another fascinating calendar for 2026. Some months have both before and after shots, showing shops and buildings as, they were, and as they are today. February shows a fabulous image of Mr Morrison of Sefton rasping the hoof of ‘Ra es’, a pony belonging to Mr Hargreaves of Amberley. July shows the historical image of Rangiora’s Magistrates Court and Post O ce erected in 1881. Thanks to the support of Artisan by Rangiora Bakery and Wilson Print, the calendars are available for $20 each and can be purchased from Rangiora Barbers on High Street Rangiora or the Rangiora Museum on Good Street. All proceeds go to the Rangiora Museum. Images supplied.

A true New Zealand fragrance
Think perfume and you might think Paris, London, Rome. But two North Canterbury women are turning that old stereotype on its head with a new fragrance which is New Zealand inspired, made and marketed.
As friends since high school, sisters-in-law and part of a fifth-generation sawmilling family, Amy Sherwin and Tash Sutherland (pictured) have been inspired by the subtle elegance of New Zealand’s majestic Douglas Fir trees.
Sutherland Timber was started in 1920 and specialises in processing Douglas Fir trees. “Not many people cut or work with Douglas Fir,” explains Amy. “It’s a strong, dense, durable wood and is great for using in building, including framing and feature internal linings.”
When the forestry company they work with started to distill the oil from the felled fir trees, Amy and Tash fell in love with the distinctive, fresh and natural aroma. They thought other people would love it too and they also loved the idea of using every aspect of the tree, rather than wasting such a special resource.
So the pair worked closely with the essential oil supplier, who had already formulated a fragrance. “When we smelt it, we just said ‘we love it,’” shared Amy with a laugh. “It was just right and we were very lucky with that part of the process.” With the fragrance finalised, they set about logos and designs and marketing. Getting hands on, they bottle the fragrance themselves.
“We did smash a few bottles in the early days,” admits Tash. “There’s a special machine to clamp the lids on and we couldn’t get it right.”
So what’s it like working together?

“It’s been easy,” says Tash. “We’ve both fallen into our roles quite naturally.” Tash, who also works as a preschool teacher, is more drawn to the logistics of the business – she likes making up the boxes for the fragrance, getting orders packed up. Amy has veered more towards branding and design and trying to get their beautiful fragrance into stores.
At the moment they are trying to get the fragrance into stores, and with true North Canterbury roots their first stockist is Blackwells Department Store in Kaiapoi. There’s a certain feeling of coming full circle there, admits Amy who, as a child, modelled in one of Blackwells’ fashion shows.
Today Amy and Tash are full of enthusiasm for their new fragrance and lots of other plans in the pipeline. The essential oils from the Douglas Fir are versatile, and the pair don’t just talk the talk. They both wear the fragrance.
“We keep it on the kitchen bench and we all use it in the family,” says Amy. “It’s a unisex scent and it’s very subtle.”
Sustenance tips for great sleep
WORDS: DR LIBBY
As the day winds down, the choices we make at the dinner table can have a surprisingly big influence on the quality of our sleep.

The foods we eat in the evening interact with our body’s natural rhythms, helping us drift o more easily and enjoy deeper, more restorative rest. With just a few gentle adjustments, you can set yourself up for a far better night’s sleep.
Protein at dinner is a wonderful place to start. Foods like chicken, fish, eggs or legumes contain amino acids that help your body make the hormones and neurotransmitters involved in sleep. Think of them as quiet contributors that help your system begin to wind down. Carbohydrates also play a role, although it’s a little more individual. Some people feel great avoiding carbs at their evening meal. For others, a low-carb dinner can actually be disruptive because it may lead to a drop in blood glucose overnight. When that happens, the body can release adrenaline to bring glucose levels back up. And because adrenaline is your ‘get out of danger’ hormone, you wake suddenly and find it hard to fall asleep again. If you suspect this is happening, try adding a small serve of whole-food carbohydrates like potato, pumpkin or basmati rice with dinner and notice the di erence.
Ca eine is another important consideration. It blocks adenosine –one of the substances that helps us feel sleepy – and encourages the adrenal glands to release adrenaline. Even small amounts of ca eine in tea, chocolate or soft drinks can a ect people for hours longer than they realise. For most, stopping ca eine
after midday helps protect sleep quality. Eating earlier, and keeping dinner light, also supports better rest. A heavy meal close to bedtime keeps the digestive system working hard at the very time the body wants to be slowing down. Leaving two to three hours between dinner and bed can make a noticeable di erence.
For some, spicy food in the evening can make it harder to sleep soundly. The compounds that create heat can raise body temperature or irritate digestion, which isn’t ideal when the body is trying to cool down and settle. Tryptophan-rich foods like poultry, legumes or chickpeas can gently support the production of serotonin and melatonin – both central to sleep regulation. And foods such as eggs and almonds provide vitamin B6, which helps convert these building blocks into the hormones needed for healthy sleep.
Small, thoughtful choices, repeated consistently, can transform how easily your body slips into rest. Your evenings don’t need to be perfect; they just need to support the quiet biological choreography already happening within you.

Luxury Pilates Kaiapoi comes

This will be the third Studio Pilates for franchisee and North Canterbury resident, Taryn Currie. A love for practicing Pilates led Taryn to open her first studio in Rangiora some four years ago. It went so well she opened a second in Harewood and now is back to North Canterbury with the Kaiapoi studio opening this month. In the last few years Pilates has become more mainstream she says, people are really starting to become aware of the benefits and they see all ages and fitness levels at Studio Pilates.
Taryn is also the South Island course facilitator, trains the instructors and still finds time to take part in Pilates sessions herself.
Instructors complete over 130 hours of training with both theory and practical, covering everything from anatomy to movements and equipment. When their training is complete they also spend 30 hours shadowing an experienced instructor in a studio.
“Our instructors are one of the real highlights of Studio Pilates,” says Taryn enthusiastically. “I always choose recruits with great people skills, so they’re warm and pleasant with clients.”
Sessions are run in groups and follow a visual and audio demonstration of each exercise on Studio Pilates TV. An instructor is always present making sure clients are performing the moves in a safe, e ective way to target the intended muscles and get maximum results. They can also adjust the spring resistance of the reformer beds for all levels: beginner, intermediate or pro.

Getting Christmas ready
The best decorating for Christmas doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require a little forward planning. If you want to get things feeling Christmassy from the get go, check out how to make your own Christmas wreath with these simple steps from Tanya Odendaal of Blooms and Brushes.

1. Before you get started, find yourself a wreath frame. These will help to hold everything in place and give you the basic shape for your wreath. You can buy them at craft stores and places like Spotlight.
2. There are three basic elements to a wreath – the main one is the greenery which this is then punctuated with Christmas decorations and ribbons.
3. To get started, create small posies of greenery, held together at the stem with floristry wire. See across for some greenery suggestions.
4. Add the posies to the wreath frame at regular intervals so they cover the main area of the frame. They should be tied onto the frame with floristry wire.
5. Add on your choice of Christmas decorations, this can be stars or baubles or anything you feel is festive.
6. Finish with your choice of ribbons.

Tanya says it takes around two to two and a half hours to make your own wreath. She also advises you can refresh a wreath with greenery if you are going for that fresh look, yet it is also an attractive option to let it just dry and take on the subtle colours of dried foliage.
You will need:
• A selection of greenery this can be conifers, blue gum, olive branches, eucalyptus, dried lambs ear.
• A wreath frame.
• Decorations of your choice such as stars or Christmas balls.
• Decorative ribbon for finishing touches.
Check out Tanya’s wonderful wreath-making workshops online at www.bloomsandbrushes.co.nz
Kaiapoi Community Christmas Market

Serendipity Circus will provide a program filled with children’s entertainment, including face painting, balloon twisting, roving stilt walkers, jugglers, and a bouncy castle. And if the kids aren’t excited enough about that they can also meet Santa in his Grotto – where he will hear their Christmas wishes, and you can take your own photo of Santa and your child.
There will also be a Great Kaiapoi Christmas Shopping Spree Hamper Draw which will take place at 2.30pm on the day. A variety of vouchers and merchandise donated by Kaiapoi businesses will be in the hamper and any purchase made in participating Kaiapoi shops up until 12 December qualifies for the draw.
Paul Inwood, General Manager of the Kaiapoi Club, expresses his excitement for this event, noting that it has been missing from Kaiapoi’s town centre for few years. The community and businesses have been looking for something to fill this gap. Numerous community organisations, along with food and craft vendors, have shown interest in participating.
Local businesses and organisations have come on board to support this fabulous event, including Visit Waimakariri, Kaiapoi Aluminium Joinery, KATS Tyre & Alignment, the Kaiapoi River Queen, SmartGrass, Harcourts Kaiapoi Four Seasons Realty, and Sutherland Timber. Many local businesses will also contribute gifts for the Great Kaiapoi Shopping Spree Hamper.

As local MP I am of course a big advocate of the Waimakariri and I enjoy promoting the area to visitors. So I was excited to hear that the Oxford Forest Conser vation
It’s been a great time to support our rural communities with the Northern A&P Show in Rangiora followed by the Canterbury A&P Show over the long weekend a few weeks later. It was particularly nice to spend time at the shows after the weather and financial viability a ected them last year.
New Zealand’s newest Dark Sky Park.
We all know how beautiful our skies are, especially in rural areas like Oxford, but we often take this for granted, which is why I am proud of the work which has been under taken by all those involved in Oxford’s Dark Sky project.
I had a great time with the family at the Rangiora A&P Show checking out the incredible displays on o er. It was particularly nice to have a sunny day for the show after last year was rained out, and given the extreme weather events we had during the week leading up to the day. I also enjoyed a first this year, judging the motorised furniture race! Thanks to President Rachael Robinson and her volunteers for a successful event.
Visitors I have met from places like the UK are amazed by our night skies and it’s something we should be harnessing more as a drawcard for tourists. This is just one more thing to put Waimakariri on the map for both international and domestic tourism.
It was equally good to visit the Canterbury Show 2025 after it was cancelled in 2024. What a testament to The Canterbury A&P Association that it proved so popular this year, with more than 400 trade sites and livestock entries proving both the agricultural sector and the Canterbury community were in full support of the event’s comeback.
I am a frequent visitor to schools around the electorate and I feel sure those I have spoken to recently will be happy with the Government’s recent action in the education sphere. As well as banning
Closer to home, it was also fantastic to see Finance Minister Nicola Willis and Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Dr Shane Reti visiting a farm in Waikuku this month to announce a $1.2 million Government–industry investment into a breakthrough technology to cut agricultural emissions, reduce farm costs, and boost productivity.
The investment supports North Canterbury start-up Āmua’s development of a wearable device for cows that could reduce nitrous oxide emissions by up to 95 per cent and nitrate leaching by 93 per cent. It is the 16th project to be funded by AgriZeroNZ, a joint venture between the Government and leading agribusiness partners, and its first equity investment into nitrous oxide mitigation.
We know that when farmers do well, we all do well, and it’s been a great month to celebrate these rural success stories around Canterbury.

Easy homemade atbreads
This time of year is all about getting together with friends and families – backyard barbeques and drinks in the garden. Food photographer and trained chef Claire Fahey has a great recipe for quick and simple flatbreads that you can pair with just about anything to make a quick, attractive plate for guests.
These two-ingredient flatbreads are quick, soft, and perfect for almost anything, from curries and BBQ chicken to hummus and dips. Try pairing yours with barbecued mini lamb burgers, and also stu a few flatbreads with spiced lamb and serve with salad and tzatziki – everyone will love making their own. This recipe makes six good-sized wraps. Double the batch if you need more.
INGREDIENTS
• 1 cup Greek yoghurt
• 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour (plus a little extra if needed)
• Optional: garlic butter to brush on once cooked
METHOD
1. Place the Greek yoghurt in a mixing bowl and give it a quick stir.
2. Add 1 cup of flour and mix to combine. Gradually add more flour until the dough starts to come together in a ball.
3. Tip the dough onto a well-floured surface and knead for 1–2 minutes. If it’s too sticky, sprinkle in a little more flour. The dough should be smooth, soft, and no longer stick to your hands.
4. Wrap the dough in cling film and rest it in the fridge for an hour, or until ready to cook.
5. Divide the dough into 6 even portions. Lightly grease your work surface with oil or flour, then roll each ball into a round or oval.
6. Heat a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, cook each flatbread dry (no oil) for about 20–30 seconds per side, until pu ed and golden brown spots appear.
7. If you’d like, mix melted butter with crushed garlic and brush it over the flatbreads as soon as they come out the pan.
