Saying I do...

Yes, it’s a wedding issue, and one that will bring back memories of your own marriage ceremonies for many of you. For those planning theirs, or dreaming of future nuptial bliss, this issue is full of ideas, people, and businesses that can help, plus lots of local wedding photos.

I’ve waltzed down the aisle twice now, and am looking forward to my 20th wedding anniversary this year, so I’m enjoying seeing older couples and second-timers there. That proves we all look for love, and age is no barrier.

If you’re not into brides and grooms, belles and beaus, there is also plenty of other reading as you turn the pages.

Jewellery designer Sophie Divett, and former All Black Andy Ellis talk candidly in our interview section, we have some suggestions for Easter and holiday fun, and check out the picturesque destinations in the Top of the South feature.

On another note, Metropol’s Business and Build sections provide insight into how property investment is progressing, mid-sized business confidence, and an overhaul of building fees. The latter is aimed at combatting ongoing housing and rental property shortages, affordability, and increased costs in council fees, and materials. Consistency is the aim of this call tied to the Government’s legislative overhaul.

Having a roof over our heads is a basic human right, at least in New Zealand, even though the traditional dream of owning our own homes is now far beyond the reach of many.

Innovative building firms have attempted to address both shortage and affordability issues with tiny and prefabricated homes, making valuable inroads. Still, however, there are often frustrating delays and costs, some due to councils, their bylaws, fees, and bureaucratic red tape.

Simplicity, consistency, and everyone being on the same page would be an amazing start to solving housing shortages, combined with the fees overhaul. Welfare and community groups are already behind improving the situation, as are many of the industries involved in building homes. Now all it needs is for proper collaboration, compromise, and co-operation at government level.

Imagine getting married, and then moving into your own affordable new home. A dream come true.

Timeless Elegance

Looking back, Sophie’s path into jewellery was less of a deliberate decision and more of a natural progression of artistic interests. “I was making little sculptures out of wire, clay, and organic materials, and my lecturer suggested in my final critique that jewellery may be worth exploring because the things I was making were jewellery-like,” she recalls.

That suggestion stuck with Sophie. Working in retail, a jewellery business was an opportunity to bring in extra money while keeping her creative energy alive.

Soon enough, Sophie’s jewellery business grew in fits and starts, marked by a series of pivotal moments. “Every year or two, there’s been a moment where I’ve had to decide if I want to take things ‘to the next level’ or not.” One of those moments was deciding to return to full-time study, this time focusing solely on jewellery. “It was a big choice, considering I already had one degree’s worth of student debt and wasn’t sure how the jewellery thing would work out.”

Sophie’s passion grew with her ambition. “Then came the decision to move my workshop out of home and into commercial premises, and then to move into larger premises as the business grew.”

Perhaps one of the biggest choices was expanding the business by bringing others on board. “When you’ve spent so long building something yourself, it can be hard to relinquish control, but it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.” Sophie built her team, which she now labels the heart of the business. “I have three wonderful women working with me currently.”

“I learned that there are consequences to taking on too much and that if I wanted the business to keep growing, I’d need some help.”

Working solo to then growing her team has not been without its bumps in the road. For Sophie, 2020 was a particularly tough year. After su ering a concussion and spending months recovering, she realised the business couldn’t keep running solely on her energy.

“It was a wake-up call for me,” she says. “I learned that there are consequences to taking on too much and that if I wanted the business to keep growing, I’d need some help.” Expanding was more fruitful than expected – it allowed Sophie the opportunity to pursue creating art without sacrificing the business’ progress.

Sophie’s advice for anyone preparing to build a business? Put the wheels in motion. “Just start. It’s so easy to put things o until the ‘right time’, but there is no right time. If you start today, even if you only do a little bit every day, it’ll add up. You’ll be making progress, no matter how big or small.”

She stresses the importance of maintaining integrity in business. “It’s okay to say ‘no’ sometimes, which can be hard when you’re needing the bills to be paid. In the long term, maintaining your integrity is going to benefit you much more. For me, I have a particular style, and I’m quite particular about making sure everything I make is in line with that, because that’s what people come to me for.”

As Sophie looks to the future, what she has built is a testament to the power of following your passion and trusting the process. Remaining true to her values and artistic freedom, she continues to shape a brand that stands for more than just beautiful jewellery.

One with nature

Nature has always been Sophie’s muse. “I love the outdoors and natural forms; they inspire my work often,” she explains. “My process varies a lot, sometimes it’s casting from real plant

clippings or using photography as a reference. My most recent collection, Shorelines, was inspired by artefacts I saw at the Vienna Natural History Museum earlier in the year and was made by taking imprints from the textures of seashells.”

Sophie’s pieces always feature a distinctive, organic carved texture – a signature of her brand. “I like to make pieces using the traditional technique of lost-wax casting, which means hand-carving the models in wax, which are then cast into metal. Computer-aided design is getting a lot more commonly used these days, but I Iove the textures and tactile quality that can be achieved through working with wax.”

Not only are her designs inspired by nature, but her business is guided by the same values. “I am always looking for ways to improve our practices in terms of ethics and sustainability,” she explains. “It’s important to me that I can feel good about the pieces I make, especially as they’re so meaningful to those who receive them.”

Love crafted locally

Engagement rings and the love stories they represent hold a special place in Sophie’s work. “Jewellery is made to mark so many moments, and some are deeply personal. Sometimes we’ve needed to keep secrets through the process, and to have that kind of trust from clients is special.

“I make lots of engagement and wedding rings, but it never gets old. It’s always such a lovely thing when couples choose one of my pieces.” Sophie’s passion is clear when she describes the moment a customer picks up their new ring. “Whether it’s chosen from the cabinet or a custom-made piece, it’s so lovely. The whole team is always excited to see a ring go to its ‘forever home’.”

Sophie’s suggestion for the…

TWO PEAS IN A POD

Ditch the rules for wedding bands or engagement rings. Look for something that resonates with you as a couple.

ADORER OF INTRICACIES

Trust your gut when choosing an engagement ring, go with what you love.

Andy Ellis’ life is like chaos in a wonderful way. Fresh from a stint in Bali at an All Blacks High Performance Lab, and thrilled to be taking o for another three days to his son’s school camp, I welcomed his energy on a brisk morning. Bubbly and energetic, Andy is happy to be here, there, and everywhere.

If you watched the Crusaders take on the Blues at Eden Park in mid-March, you will have seen and heard Andy on pre-game commentary – and don’t forget his appearance at the Black Clash in January.

In between this, he’s the presenter of television show Moving Houses, and is on a mission to strengthen the significance of being Kiwi with local business owners and his online domain Dot Kiwi.

So, what does Andy do? Well, he wears many hats. Why? “I’ll always say yes and give new things a crack,” Andy explains. “I quite like being outside of my comfort zone. I don’t at the time, but I always feel great afterwards.” Life on the rugby field meant Andy was always doing things that scared him. “When I commit, I’m in. I’m just in on a few things,” he smiles. Sitting still doesn’t exist within Andy’s vocabulary. “I like to be busy.” To relax, he will cook dinner or exercise. “Maybe, something is wrong with me,” he laughs.

The show, which has six more episodes to come this season, surrounds Andy with beautifully unique homes, all of which put his landscape architecture degree to good use. It’s fuel too for the forever home he’s building in Canterbury, with help from Danny Komo, his co-creator on the now seven-year-old book Kiwi Backyard.

Entering television celebrity status saw audiences connect with Andy in ways they never could through his previous on-screen pursuits. Encounters in the grocery store switched from humble nods and handshakes to Moving Houses enthusiasts manoeuvering past his trolley and joking with him. “Look out, it’s harder to get around me than it is a truck,” a lady laughed with him in the aisle. Andy’s impersonation of such encounters are warm and reflective of the way these connections make him feel. “They know me more after watching the show as opposed to watching me play rugby. It’s like I’m in their lounge on a Sunday night.”

“My palms were sweaty, my heart was racing. I could see them wondering ‘why did we get this guy?’”

In a Black Clash promotion, Andy said Christchurch is the greatest city in the country. “It is,” he confirms. “Look at this place. Full of life.” A big foodie, Andy often finds himself enjoying one of the many eateries with his family – only once they determine a winner out of the countless hotspots.

Of all the hats he wears, Andy’s favourite is the one called dad. Watching his children grow up alongside wife Emma is impossible to whittle into words. He lives to see them do what they love. “I try to book in things that I don’t want to miss, like school camp.” Daughter Scarlett, 15, loves rowing, netball, and is a keen singer, while his son Arthur enjoys rugby, cricket and playing the drums. “It’s cool to see them really committed. Scarlett doesn’t even make her bed at home but she won’t miss a rowing session.”

ANDY ON THE MOVE

Andy’s entry to television presenting was intense, despite his season earning a top rating. He arrived to shoot his first scene and tell the story of a beautiful couple moving to Mangawhai in front of a breathtaking backdrop. “I had this script that I hadn’t read. The sun was setting. We only had a certain amount of time.” Andy’s tried and tested ‘wing it’ approach wasn’t going to cut the Moving Houses mustard.

“At 60 takes, I still hadn’t got it.” He laughs, “My palms were sweaty, my heart was racing. I could see them wondering ‘why did we get this guy?’” Fast, Andy flips from nervous reminiscence to his signature optimism. “I hadn’t felt that feeling since playing rugby. It was a thrill.” At the time, he returned to his rugby routine to focus and find calm. Success at last – after another 20 takes. “I apologised and shouted them dinner.”

KIWI SPIRIT

Harnessing the value of Kiwis in business, Andy built the Dot Kiwi domain to empower individuals to carve out their online presence with a New Zealand identity. He references a case study from yoghurt company The Collective’s launch into the United Kingdom on the trust the .kiwi domain o ers. Marketing director Helen Costello summarises the strength in leaning into local: “A .kiwi domain has enabled us to literally live and breathe our values. We are a proudly outspoken New Zealand brand that does things our own way, and .kiwi represents that.” With operations manager Hannah Duder, Andy works to give Kiwi businesses more meaning online.

RUGBY & THE ROAD AHEAD

What Andy has achieved since hanging up his rugby boots makes that period of his life and career feel so far away. Still, he holds the worldwide rugby network of people close. “The thing I take away from rugby is the friendships.”

What’s not forgotten are the losses. “You put so much e ort in. You take those learnings forward, but you’re always with a group of mates.” He recounts many memorable achievements – the 2011 Rugby World Cup triumph being one – yet brings it all back to the people he held trophies over his head with.

Andy hints other television opportunities have presented themselves following his host debut, so whether on screen, through sport, or at the hottest local eatery, keep an eye out.

Sweets treats &

At Easter, chocolates fill the home or garden, hidden from eager eyes for a short time. While traditional, egg hunts fail to cater to diabetics and others who don’t enjoy chocolate.

CTreats

onsider an alternative when organising Easter gifts for friends and family: fill baskets with other personalised gifts to excite, and avoid the inevitable sugar rush.

• With small ‘stocking-like’ gifts and riddles or questions, build a scavenger hunt that rewards each correct discovery with a thoughtful treat. This keeps the Easter egg hunt magic alive, and invites an engaging, cheerful atmosphere.

• Let their personality decide: some reading for a bookworm, a voucher to a place they might love to go, or a product that aligns with their favourite hobby.

• Plan a big family breakfast and indulge in a delightful spread while spending quality time with loved ones. Embrace the theme with bunny ear napkins (find a how-to below).

Eying up education

A recent study on New Zealand school children showed that 30 percent of Year 2 children suffered from a visual condition likely affecting their academic performance.

Pre-school vision screening, while e ective at detecting severe visual conditions, does not screen children for reading vision. Problems with closerange focus can lead to decreased reading rate, accuracy and comprehension, says optician Jeremy Fox of Anstice Optometrists.

“Having a full assessment of your child’s visual system is recommended for all school age children, particularly those who are having di culties with their learning,” he adds.

“A SchoolVision examination at Anstice Optometrists will include an assessment of your child’s distance and near vision with analysis of their visual co-ordination and tracking skills, all which can directly impact academic outcome.”

Local holiday fun

The Christchurch Tram and Christchurch Gondola offer plenty of joy for the whole family.

Hop on the Christchurch Tram to explore the central city, including family-favourite spots like Margaret Mahy Playground, Tūranga, the Christchurch Art Gallery and the Botanic Gardens. Get your all-day Tram pass for $40 per adult and $10 per child for a full day of exploration at the 18 stops around the circuit.

The Christchurch Gondola is another popular option for families. Enjoy the fun cableway ride to the summit station and take in the 360-degree views of Christchurch and Canterbury. You can also wander the walking tracks, grab a drink or snack in the café, browse the gift store and hop on the Discovery Ride to learn about the area’s history.

The team at Christchurch Attractions o er special activities over the Easter period: see their website for details about their Easter bunny hunt, Easter egg guessing competition and more.

With school holidays fast approaching, finding activities to entertain children can be challenging.

Jurassic Adventure is the perfect school holiday activity. Not only is it the best value for fun in Christchurch, this micro theme park also o ers a range of activities immersed in a Jurassic dinosaur theme.

With services including mini golf, Dino Dig, dinosaur laser tag, Raptor Run maze, and Jurassic Jeeps, this space has it all. Not only does this supply endless entertainment for the children, but parents and caregivers can enjoy themselves too.

Setting it apart from other mini golf courses is its extreme theming, says co-owner Aaron Keown. “It’s all dinosaur-themed and people get to go on their own Jurassic adventure when they join us.” Alongside its nine animatronic dinosaurs, Jurassic Adventure has the only wheelchair accessible mini golf course in the South Island, “that gives us a point of di erence from most in the world,” adds Aaron.

School holidays are expensive, and “Jurassic Adventure gives people options to make their dollar go further during the school holidays,” Aaron adds.

Specials include a mini golf and maze combo, or ‘The Big 3’ which includes a $99 family pass for mini golf, Dino Dig, and Raptor Run maze. “We have plenty of a ordable options to keep young people entertained,” says Aaron. “Come and see for yourself.”

New Zealand women remain under-represented in investment property ownership, with financial barriers rather than attitudes holding them back, CoreLogic’s latest Women & Property Report 2025 reveals.

The fifth edition of the report, released in March, finds female home ownership rates are closing the gap to male-only ownership, yet women continue to lag in investment property.

For the first time, the survey also explored attitudes towards home ownership, barriers to property investment, and financial literacy levels across gender groups, while examining the impact of income levels and employment status on property investment trends.

CoreLogic NZ Chief Property Economist Kelvin Davidson says the findings highlight the strong presence of women in home ownership, while also underscoring an ongoing imbalance in property investment.

Analysis shows that female-only owner-occupiers outnumber their male counterparts, making up 23.1% of sole ownership. This compares with 20.9% for men, and with mixed-gender ownership accounting for 56%.

The gap widens when it comes to investment properties, where women trail men by 4.2 percentage points.

“Financial barriers continue to limit their ability to invest, which has long-term implications for wealth accumulation. Our data shows female-only investment property ownership sits at 21.9%, compared to 26.1% for men, a persistent gap that reinforces the need for financial strategies that support women’s investment opportunities.”

To download a copy of the CoreLogic NZ Women & Property Report 2025 visit: www.corelogic.co.nz/news-research/reports/womenand-property-2025

Key findings include:

• While female-only home ownership rates have inched closer to male-only ownership, women continue to lag in investment property, limiting their success in building long-term wealth through real estate.

• Women’s property ownership is more concentrated in more a ordable regions, while men have more diverse and resilient property portfolios.

Asset and succession planning

Successful long-term planning requires an understanding of your personal goals and objectives, as well as specialist knowledge across corporate, tax and trust laws.

It’s a huge topic and one that in my view, needs to be planned properly with the involvement of the family,” says Canterbury Property Investors Association (CPIA) president Nigel Barker.

“It starts with a conversation that follows the recognition that you are not going to live forever.

“Asset and succession planning is a significant issue for many investors. The successful transfer of wealth from one generation to the next often starts years earlier.”

Areas for consideration include:

• asset and governance structuring

• trust structuring

• wills and powers of attorney

• relationship property agreements

• facilitating family meetings/psychologist input

• mediation and alternative dispute resolution structures

“Asset structuring is an important aspect of this and is about ensuring your property is held in the most appropriate legal structure to achieve your life’s objectives. It is as important to the new business owner as it is to the head of a 3rd or 4th generation multi-million dollar family enterprise. Successful long-term planning requires an understanding of your personal goals and objectives, as well as obtaining specialist advice across corporate, tax and trust law,” says Nigel.

Seek professional advice

“It is important to work closely with your professional advisers to devise a plan that works to achieve your wishes, goals and objectives. Also, understand that things can change for you and family over time. If and when things change, seek a review of your investment and succession plans and make any necessary adjustments, so you can continue to focus on the things that are important.

“Think about which of your children has the skills, ability and willingness to manage the investment portfolio. Questions to consider are:

• How will they be paid for the work?

• Can they count on the support of their siblings? It may surprise you to learn that many high wealth families employ the services of clinical psychologists to help analyse and determine how the family dynamic can be managed to facilitate succession

planning. Structuring your property investments is vitally important.”

Nigel adds that trusts and companies obviously play a vital role as these entities can survive death of an individual, so the governance of these structures is critical. “Address whether there needs to be independent directors and trustees engaged to support family members to run these businesses? Ensure there is a clear memorandum of your wishes laid down to give independent trustees guidance on what your wishes are.

Fairness & mediation

”If there are issues of fairness to address within the family these are best discussed formally and openly. A family mediator may be necessary.”

He says such discussions could lead to the creation of a Deed of Family Arrangement (DOFA) to try to ensure the family are involved in the planning of what comes next.

“Succession arrangements are so important for property portfolios. Planning a DOFA is a journey. It may take a decade to construct, and it may need to evolve over time as the family expands, spouses join the family, and circumstances change. It’s a conversation that needs to continue.

“If the conclusion ultimately is that dying with too much land is a curse for the family, make the call early so that you can make an orderly divestment to cash. Of course, consider how you will manage the wealth that is held in cash rather than property. Establish who will advise you on this and build these relationships early on in your life’s journey.”

Moving forward together

One of Canterbury’s most trusted legal firms is on the move from Moorhouse Ave to Armagh St.

This April, Corcoran French will open the doors to its new o ce on Armagh St, marking an exciting step forward for one of Canterbury’s most trusted legal firms. Located in the historic RSA building, now owned by Amherst Properties Ltd, the new premises blend modern design with a respectful nod to Christchurch’s past.

Expanding horizons

The decision to move to Armagh St wasn’t made lightly, says managing partner Rachael Robertson. “The move is to help enhance our client experience and provide a more comfortable and modern environment. Yet, the core of the Corcoran French philosophy remains unchanged.

USE YOUR HOME EQUITY TO PURCHASE A SECOND PROPERTY

The New Zealand property market has long been a cornerstone of wealth building, and for many homeowners, their greatest asset is right beneath their feet—home equity. If you’ve built up significant equity in your home, you may be sitting on an opportunity to expand your property portfolio by leveraging that equity to purchase an investment property. But is it the right move for you?

Home equity is the difference between your home’s current market value and the amount you owe on your mortgage. As property values rise and mortgage balances decrease, equity builds, giving homeowners financial flexibility. NZ lenders often allow homeowners to borrow against this equity through a top-up loan, a revolving credit facility, or a home equity loan. These funds can then be used as a deposit or even full financing for a second property.

Reasons to invest in property:

Wealth Growth – property investments have historically appreciated over time, offering potential long-term capital gains.

Passive Income – owning a rental property can generate ongoing income, helping cover mortgage costs and providing financial security.

Diversification – spreading your assets across multiple properties reduces risk and enhances your financial stability.

Tax Benefits – rental property owners in NZ can offset some expenses against rental income, providing potential tax advantages.

Keen to get some tailored financial advice to find out if you have enough home equity to purchase an investment today?

Adding value for home sellers

Selling your property comes with an important early decision: Which real estate company and sales consultant can you trust to guide you through the journey?

Every seller deserves the confidence that their property will be handled with care and professionalism, while also achieving the best possible outcome, whether that means meeting personal needs or securing a premium price. “When it comes to selling your home, you deserve expertise, strategy, and results. That’s exactly what I can deliver,” says Harcourts Grenadier agent Keith MacDonald.

He adds there are countless reasons to place your trust in Harcourts. “With over 500 interconnected agents in Christchurch, your property benefits from an extensive network of potential buyers and industry connections. Harcourts not only holds the largest market share of listings, ensuring maximum buyer tra c, it also fosters collaboration among agents. This teamwork often generates more interest in your property, creating competition that can drive up the final sale price,” says Keith.

Listing with the company gives vendors immediate access to a trusted and proven sales process. “Our tailored marketing strategies ensure your property reaches the right buyers through digital platforms, targeted advertising, and traditional channels. By casting a wide net, we capture interest, create demand, and increase competition; key factors in securing a premium sale price. In real estate, an extra buyer can mean thousands more in your pocket, and with Harcourts’ network behind you, that opportunity is maximised.”

Sellers who choose Harcourts can confidently view commission as an investment that positions their property for success, he says.

“At the end of the day, what matters most is selling well.

Listing with us is a strategic choice that delivers strong results.

“Real estate is, at its core, a people business, not just a property business. At Harcourts Grenadier, we have been proudly serving Christchurch for decades, building trust and delivering results.

“With 30 years of experience in the industry, my reputation is built on integrity, professionalism, and proven success.

I know Christchurch inside and out.

“My range of experience spans a landscape of diverse sales, across all di erent suburbs in Christchurch and sale types, be it auction or deadline and the critical negotiations involving multiple buyers, that are central to any successful sale,” adds Keith.

e bigger picture

Mid-sized businesses could boost New Zealand’s economy if limiting constraints are addressed, says a new report.

Rising costs, industry competition, and business or industry regulation are the top factors that businesses believe are impacting their ability to maximise potential.

According to the newly released Bigger Picture Report from accounting software firm MYOB, increased sta training is the top action business leaders polled believe (37%) would have a positive impact on their productivity.

This was followed by more automation (36%), increased capital investment (35%), implementing new (or updating) business software (33%), reduced compliance requirements (33%) and a greater availability of specialised skills (32%).

Sixty percent of mid-sized businesses have seen their revenue increase compared with this time last year and they report having more sales or work lined up for the next six months than usual.

Medium business with 20-500 full-time equivalent employees and $5m+ annual revenue in New Zealand, were surveyed from 6 to 30 January 2025, by independent research agency Dynata.

MYOB’s Executive General Manager of Enterprise, Kim Clarke, says most businesses reported revenue growth, and many are enjoying export success with markets like Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, Canada and the United States. Improving international trade relations through new free trade agreements or other trade deals (71%) top many wish lists. Other potentially positive moves identified include:

• Addressing interest rates and inflation (69%)

• Government-led programmes to support business’ digital upskilling and cyber-resilience (68%)

• Adjusting competition settings (65%)

• Reducing the company tax rate to 25% (65%)

• Government-backed loans/subsidies to help businesses finance growth, innovation and digitisation (65%).

Are they an employee or contractor?

Understanding the new rules on classifying workers and contractors is essential.

Many businesses prefer contractors because they o er flexibility, reduce overhead costs, and eliminate obligations like leave entitlements and KiwiSaver contributions. Messing this up means lawsuits, unexpected bills, and a bad reputation. Do it right, and you’ll stay compliant, avoid disputes, and treat workers fairly.

Recent changes to New Zealand’s Employment Relations Act make it clearer than ever: getting worker classification right is crucial. Misclassifying employees as contractors can cost businesses big time in fines and back pay. So, how do you get it right?

Key questions to ask:

1. Who’s in control? If you dictate when, where, and how work is done, they’re likely an employee.

2. Are they part of the team? If they’re essential to daily operations, they’re probably not a contractor.

3. Who takes the financial risk? Employees get wages and benefits, while contractors manage their own expenses.

4. Who provides the tools? If you supply the equipment, they’re more likely an employee.

Why it matters

Getting this wrong means legal trouble, unexpected costs, and potential damage to your business’s reputation. On the flip side, proper classification keeps your business compliant, avoids disputes, and ensures fairness for workers.

Flexibility for a business and workers is increasingly a requirement, these new rules help balance flexibility with worker protection. If you’re unsure, review contracts, get expert advice, and be upfront with workers. A little caution now can save you major headaches down the track. Are you better o with employees or contractors? For a no-obligation chat about what’s best for your business, contact us to explore the pros and cons of employees versus contractors and find the right fit for your workforce.

TALKING

Nothing speaks to me like textured clothing – it offers more impact and meaning than a simple garment.

Contrasting materials trap heat to keep you cosy – all the while adding visual warmth. Pucker UP

Considered the ‘frame’ of a smile, lips deserve the same attention as teeth, skin and other essential aspects of a face.

They say that the majority of people notice someone’s smile first. Trustworthiness, approachability, and positive energy manifest in our smiles. Healthy, hydrated lips make up one half of that first impression, so consider giving your lips a little love.

LIP SCRUB

Exfoliating dead skin cells, lip scrubs contain small abrasive yet gentle exfoliating particles to remove dry, flaky skin for smoother, brighter smile. Regular exfoliation makes for smoother lipstick application and extended wear. With hydrating and soothing ingredients, they nourish lips and prevent dryness and chapping.

LIP MASK

A much newer lipcare phenomenon, masks provide intense hydration to repair damaged lips in lightning time. Thicker, and often formulated for overnight use including butter or oil ingredients for an ultra-soft feel, lip masks o er a fasteracting alternative to lip balms.

LIP PROTECTION

Just as important as shielding any other body part from the sun’s rays, applying SPF to lips is essential in maintaining a plump, nourished appearance. Look for moisturising formulas with SPF 30 or higher against UVA and UVB, and regularly drink water to hydrate from the outside in.

New research has revealed many Kiwis are checking notifications on their devices up to 50 times an hour, contributing to a whopping 88% feeling stressed by bedtime.

The pressure to stay connected is constant, with at least a quarter (27%) of Kiwis receiving notifications until the moment they go to sleep, according to new research. Amazon Kindle researched regular notifications received from smartphones, smartwatches, laptops and tablets throughout the day, finding that more than half (52%) of recipients are frequently distracted.

“When we hear a notification sound or feel our phone vibrate, our brain interprets it as something that requires our immediate focus, so we’re in a constant state of alertness,” says neuroscientist and author Dr Mark Williams.

“Each time our attention is diverted by a notification it takes 60-90 seconds to refocus

Each time our attention is diverted by a notification it takes 60-90 seconds to refocus.

back on the task that we were originally doing. These disruptions are seizing our time, resulting in decreased e ciency.”

It’s not just pop ups. More than three quarters (78%) of Kiwis check devices every hour, some up to 50 times. Similar to addictive behaviour, notifications can trigger a release of dopamine, leading to people checking their phones compulsively in anticipation of a new notification.

Addictive notifications negatively impact our focus and concentration, causing 88% of Kiwis to feel stressed by the evening. More than 29% of those struggle to relax, so watch TV (74%), listen to music (48%) and read books (29%) in an attempt to wind down.

Dr Williams top tips:

1. At least one hour before you go to sleep turn o laptops, tablets, computers and your phone, put them out of sight.

2. Limit devices with the ability to send notifications in your bedroom. Where you sleep should be dark, cool and quiet without distractions.

3. Avoid stimulants such as ca eine, nicotine and alcohol before bedtime.

4. Try reading during the last hour before sleep, but not on a device that sends notifications. Maybe read a book.

Sfrom the experts

If you experience a sports-related injury, imaging diagnostics can provide critical information and help with effective treatment and recovery.

ports medical imaging uses specialised imaging techniques such as MRI, CT scans, ultrasound, and x-rays to diagnose and assess sports-related injuries. This can provide detailed insights into the type and extent of the injury, aiding in e ective treatment planning and rehabilitation.

Dr Thomas Moritz, the lead Musculoskeletal (MSK) radiologist at Reform Radiology (pictured), says “Sports imaging is an area of radiology that caters for athletes of all shapes and sizes, ranging from competitors or recreational runners to people who simply want to improve their general fitness. The resolution of the various scans is so advanced today that we can get a really detailed look into the injured region. We are then able to describe to a referring medical practitioner what is wrong so that they can then determine the appropriate treatment.

Dr Moritz adds that a quick turnaround of results, within one to two days, is crucial to ensure that treatment begins in a timely fashion to achieve the optimal results. “We pride ourselves on having very good relationships with referring practitioners – it really is a team approach to do the best for the patient.”

Sporting injuries are generally divided into two main groups:

• Acute injury from significant sudden trauma: Fractures, dislocations acute tendon ruptures etc.

• Chronic injury from repeated mild injury or overuse: Tendinopathy, bone stress reactions, bursitis, osteoarthritis.

With precise diagnosis and image-guided interventional techniques, it is increasingly possible to avoid surgery for sports injuries. This type of treatment mainly comes in the form of cortisone or steroid injections into the a ected parts of the body.

These injections can reduce pain and joint inflammation or improve the range of movement, as in a case of frozen shoulder. “With advances in technology we can now provide very precise injections into the injured areas. Delivery of these treatments has changed significantly over the years,” says Dr Moritz.

Committed to sporting wellbeing

Expo brings dreams to life

Planning your dream wedding should be one of the most special times in life, not stress-filled months spent liaising with wedding suppliers, and keeping track of deposits and appointments.

Morgan Tracy-Mines from Elysium Planning and Events believes wedding planning should be relaxed and fun so the bridal couple, their friends, and family can enjoy the lead up to the big day.

With this in mind, Morgan is launching the inaugural Christchurch Wedding Expo 2025, which promises to be the perfect space to find vendors that match any budget.

“I saw a gap in the market for a really big wedding expo. There’s the baby expo, cuisine and travel expos, and we have seen that brides also benefit from having a range of vendors under one roof,” she says.

More than 85 vendors will showcase their products, services and designs on 21 June 2025 at Te Pae Convention Centre in central Christchurch. “The vendors are excited to meet expo guests. It is a great way to find everything you need for your dream wedding, all in the one place,” Morgan says.

WEDDING ADVICE

Morgan’s company Elysium Events and Planning will feature at the expo, and she will be on hand to advise couples on how to take the stress out of wedding decision-making and planning.

“Elysium is a full-service wedding planning company that covers everything from day dot. We find and manage vendors, develop the design and invitations, manage timelines and are on hand on the big day to manage all the moving parts,” Morgan explains.

Elysium has no set fees or packages; it’s a completely bespoke service, so there are no surprises or hidden extras.

Morgan also wanted Christchurch Wedding Expo to be a bespoke experience, inclusive of all brides, no matter their wedding theme or budget.

“The expo promises to be a really fun day. It will cater for the $100k bride who wants all the extras, and also the backyard bride who is looking to achieve her dream day on a smaller budget,” she said.

Enter via the Elysium Planning and Events Facebook page.

Ask the experts

“When should I start looking for my dress?”, is one question commonly asked, among others, by brides-to-be. Here are some of those questions, with answers from Brides of Merivale.

When should I start looking for my dress?

Start the search for your gown at least 8-10 months prior to your wedding. If you choose a gown that needs to be ordered in for you, it can take 4-5 1/2 months to arrive from the time the order is placed. We like to ensure your gown has arrived in store with plenty of time so there is no undue stress before the wedding.

Do I need to make an appointment to come in?

Yes. Our showroom is open by appointment only to ensure you have the entire space privately booked. It gives brides the freedom to browse through our gowns then spend time with their friends and family uninterrupted.

How many people should I bring with me?

We recommend 2-4 people. Often it can be an overwhelming experience for brides and too many opposing or strong opinions can be confusing. Choose your support crew carefully ensuring they will all have your vision and are supportive of your preferences.

What type of dresses do you have?

Brides of Merivale stock a carefully curated range of gowns from leading designers including Made with Love, Jessica Bridal, Kellylin Couture and Miss Scarlett Bridal. We also o er a Bespoke Made to Measure service so you can have a ‘one-o ’ design created specifically to your needs.

What if part of a dress isn’t quite right for me?

We can fix that. Some of our brands are flexible with their designs and if not, we can change or add details such as sleeves, bows, buttons etc, at the alteration stage.

Will I need alterations?

Most Ready-Made gowns will need some alterations to ensure an individualised fit. We have an instore alterations service, and our expert consultants will personally alter your gown for you. We recommend alterations are completed in the last 8 weeks leading up to your wedding. If a bride does not live in Christchurch, we o er an express fitting service, completing alterations over 2 weekdays.

What is trending right now?

Minimalistic styles are trending. These can be figure-hugging or fuller skirts. There is a strong influence of ruching, pleating, or exposed boning featured. Despite this, we are also seeing brides asking for modern laces with 3D aspects and glamour beading. Buttons and pearls are popular along with feature veils and bold accessories. Creating a changeable vibe to your gown for the reception is also popular.

Call or email the team at Brides of Merivale today to arrange your personal consultation.

Top ends in 2025

This year is coming in hot with everything from simple yet chic designs and dreamy lace overlays, to eye-catching colours and e ortless Basque waistlines.

High-low cuts are making a comeback, and vintage vibes are inspiring countless brides, says Wilkins Bridal owner April Meredith. “We’re also seeing gowns with detachable trains and overskirts that add that extra bit of drama.”

She says whether brides are seeking a sultry style with daring

details or a modern vintage vibe, there’s something for every kind of bride in 2025.

“Florals are also trending this year, bringing a touch of whimsy and romance to any dress.

“These fresh trends celebrate a variety of shapes and sizes so every bride can find their ideal gown that says “this is me” as they walk down the aisle. We can’t wait to help you find your dream dress at Wilkins Bridal.”

Thecenturies-old rhyme goes “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a sixpence in your shoe…”. Each element represents a di erent aspect of the wedding and the couple’s future.

Something old represents the past and family history, often symbolised by a family heirloom.

Something new symbolises the future and new beginnings, usually the wedding dress or rings.

Something borrowed is about good luck, and is typically borrowed from a happily married person.

Something blue traditionally signifies love and fidelity, sometimes worn as a ribbon, lace, or a piece of jewellery.

Sixpence in your shoe represents luck and financial prosperity in marriage, and in times gone by it was custom for the father to slip the silver sixpence into the bride’s heel before she is walked down the aisle.

Exchanging rings is another tradition that has held true. Popular belief is that this practice dates to Roman times, when women were given rings made of ivory, flint, bone, copper, or iron to signify the ownership their husbands had over them. The Romans believed the fourth finger on the left hand contains a vein connected directly to the heart, hence wearing a wedding ring on that finger.

About 4500 same-sex couples have tied the knot in New Zealand since the Marriage Amendment Act came into e ect in 2013. Of these couples, there are significantly more female couples choosing to get married than male couples. Source: Stats NZ Taturanga Aotearoa.

New Zealanders are marrying about eight years later in life on average. In 1971, when marriage rates peaked, the median age at first marriage was about 21 years for women and 23 years for men. Now, the median age is 32 for females and 33 for males.

The first European marriage celebrated and recorded in New Zealand was between Maria Ringa and the Norwegian whaler and trader Phillip Tapsell in 1823.

Cake and its customs

A wedding cake is more than a dessert, it symbolises tradition, love, and prosperity.

The custom of wedding cakes dates back to ancient Rome where breaking a cake of wheat or barley over the bride’s head was believed to bring good fortune.

Fast forward a few centuries to 1840 when the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s wedding set new trends with a heavily adorned three-tiered plum cake that weighed a staggering 136kg, stood 35cm tall, and measured three metres in circumference.

The royal couple ignited a fascination with multi-tiered wedding cakes that continues today, say professional bakers Kate Podmore and Sally Holt of Canterbury’s Twisted Flour & Sugar Merchants.

“Cake tiers are meant to represent the di erent stages of life,” Kate says. “Traditionally, a couple’s first task after the wedding ceremony is to cut the cake together. This tradition is a show of the couple’s unity and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.”

The modern twist

A mother-daughter duo with decades of baking experience between them, Kate and Sally take pride in baking wedding cakes that stand out.

“We’ll happily create a traditional cake if that is what the couple wants,” says Kate. “We also love designing unique and quirky ones. One of our favourites was an elopement cake – it was such fun. Vegan cakes are in high demand, and we cater to allergy requirements, including gluten and dairy-free options. Many of our couples ask for two more flavours, which we are delighted to accommodate.”

These days, cakes come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Sally and Kate have just finished a 16-inch Italian-style wedding cake decorated with fresh raspberries. “We have access to the freshest produce when berries are required. For flower decorations, we work closely with the couple’s florist to ensure the cake matches the overall wedding aesthetic.”

Twisted Flour & Sugar Merchant’s popularity means Sally and Kate bake wedding cakes year-round. “There isn’t a wedding season for us,” Sally says.

For any couple wanting a wedding cake fit for royalty, Sally and Kate will craft a stunning centrepiece that’s almost too beautiful to eat.

From traditional white to daring black and every colour in between, rules are out the window with today’s wedding cake styles.

Events with ease

Being the organiser of a big occasion shouldn’t mean that relaxing and enjoying the day is out of the question for you.

On the contrary, your reward should be having the most fun and basking in the glory of a brilliantly run event. The mother of Christchurch entertaining is the Cashmere Club and this venerable lady o ers four function spaces. The large garden bar features wrap-around windows and overlooks the beer garden. Ideal for a summery event, it seats 100 to 120 people for a meal or 170 to 200 guests cocktail style. “This popular room has a private bar and stage,” says events manager Kayla Woolley.

A fabulous choice for a slightly smaller group, The Cashmere Lounge enables up to 70 people to sit down and dine, or 80 for nibbles.

“Open the expansive glass doors for a lovely flow to our outdoor area,” says Kayla. Small groups can book the Heathcote room for meetings and intimate gatherings, while the Sports Hall is great for recreational activities, quiz nights, and shows.

The wonderful Riverview Restaurant caters for set menus, platters, and bu ets. “Our fabulous Head Chef Emma creates canapés and fine dining to meet all dietary requirements and budgets.”

That’s the magic behind Royal Decorations New Zealand. We transform ordinary spaces into unforgettable experiences,” owner Sara Shirazian says.

Cake couture

Discover the sweet trends in wedding day showstoppers.

Several stand-out moments at a wedding elicit oohs and aahs from the crowd. One of those is when the bride first steps on to the aisle – cue gasps and tears –and another is when the cake is revealed.

A showstopper of a wedding cake is a chance for the couple to stamp their personality on to their special day. It’s why professional baker Sam Stakenburg of The Sugar Room loves working with a couple to craft the right cake statement for them.

“There is no right or wrong in what style a couple goes for. It’s about what suits their day and personalities. It’s one of my favourite parts of the job. Making a cake specifically for a couple.” Like many things, wedding cakes have their trends and fashions, so what’s hot right now?

Sam lists a revival of the old-school vintage piping style.

“It’s old-style elegance with a modern touch. These cakes are labour intensive, yet they’re a labour of love. It’s so satisfying to see them finished,” Sam says.

The Sugar Room, located in Kaiapoi, provides cakes, cupcakes, doughnuts, cookies, and sweet treats for any event. Sam loves the challenge of bringing people’s vision for their unforgettable cake to life.

Create a lifelong memory

Their wedding day makes up one of many couples’ most cherished memories. Recollection of weather, food, and guest list may slowly come to mind, yet the venue is forever remembered as where married life began.

It only makes sense that careful consideration of venue choice should ensue. Just 10 minutes out of Hanmer Springs Village is the glorious Amuri Estate, with sweeping vistas across historic farm stations. Below, the braided Waiau River meanders its way below the Southern Alps. Stunning by day and bewitching by night, this location is an ultimate in celebrating nuptials.

The property is ideal for every form of wedding from a large gathering of up to 200 guests to something more intimate. Adorned by an enchanting archway, the ceremony lawn looks across the valley to the mountains. Lawn seating or grandstandstyle seating rising the bank are options. The paved canapé and drinks terrace is large enough for dining, and inside options include the large reception hall and the smaller drawing room.

“I love seeing a couple’s day come together.”

Vanessa Orr, the owner and wedding coordinator at Amuri ensures every couple experiences their dream wedding. She can be as involved in your wedding planning as you wish – the coordinator on the day only or throughout the whole process. “I love seeing a couple’s

day come together,” says Vanessa. Having a wedding destination with breathtaking views and all the expertise needed for hosting large numbers makes the planning process so much more enjoyable. Delectable food is essential in crafting a beautiful wedding. At Amuri Estate, the team works with a selection of experienced caterers, o ering great choices to suit any budget, including cocktail platters, bu et, or sitdown meals.

A space that captivates

Your dream wedding is in easy reach just out of Christchurch.

Breathtaking scenery is the backdrop for wedding portraits that will hang proudly in your home. Let visitors admire the views before they query the location, one so beautiful it couldn’t possibly be in Christchurch, or could it?

The answer? Peppers Clearwater Resort, just seven minutes from Christchurch airport. Glistening lakes, leafy trees, and stone courtyards, gorgeously manicured

gardens and lush rolling greens provide photo opportunities like no other. Magic? Maybe. A final tick of grandeur is an onsite helicopter landing spot.

Peppers Clearwater is everything bundled in one elegant package, including your ceremony and reception settings, catering, and tasteful accommodation.

“We customise your special day from a range of options. All packages come with

an experienced wedding coordinator,” says conference sales manager Meg Lee. From bespoke, customisable chefcrafted menus to event rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows bathing the space in natural light, wedding fantasies are brought to life.

The point of di erence? “We’re not an add-on venue. Every cost is included within our venue hire package,” Meg adds. That includes two buggies to reach the best photo spots, while a booking for 80 people receives one free night’s stay.

Hanmer fun fact

Did you know? The Māori name for Hanmer Springs is Te Whakatakanga o te Ngārahu o te ahi a Tamatea, which means ‘where the ashes of Tamatea’s fire lay’. This refers to high chief and priest Tamatea-Ariki-Nui, who captained the Tākitimu waka from Hawaiiki.

The town’s European name came from Thomas Hanmer, an owner of Hawkeswood Station near the Conway River during the late 1850s. Thomas was born in Hanmer, Wales. He arrived at Lyttelton Harbour in 1852.

CAFE ELIA Fendalton
CREPES DE LA MONDE

Its cheerful yellow hue, derived from lemon zest, conjures up images of balmy, sunshine days on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. It’s little wonder it is such a popular after-dinner digestif liqueur.

Limoncello distilleries aren’t exclusive to Italy. Many Italian families migrated to New Zealand, including Sovrano Limoncello founders, the Loggias, bringing their special recipes with them.

Today Sovrano Limoncello is made in Christchurch by the Van der Plas family, who took over the business almost three years ago.

“My mother had always been a big fan of limoncello and my father was looking for a business. The stars seemed to be perfectly aligned,” says Nina Campbell of Sovrano Limoncello.

Now the enterprise is very much a hands-on family a air. Everyone, even the children, pitch in when it is time to peel the lemons, all of which are sourced from within New Zealand. “It’s all very entertaining and there’s lots of laughter and love that goes into what we do.

“Of course the scent of lemons in the air is simply amazing and the result is a delicious, crisp drink.”

The company makes various other liqueurs too, including orangello, orangello cream, limoncello cream, chococello, co ee liqueur, vodka, walnut liqueur, rosolio liqueur and liquorice liqueur.

Lens Weddings

Beloved furry friends are increasingly taking centre stage at our weddings as people design their big day around their loves and lives. So, if you’re a bride who doesn’t want to be upstaged by her pooch, be prepared, your pet is going to get a lot of attention. Pets make ceremonies truly special for the wedding party and guests alike. There are though, a few things to consider before you put a hat and bow tie on Rover...

Is your pet going to be comfortable at a bustling, busy event?

(The last thing you want is a stressed pooch taking a nip at someone, or raiding the wedding breakfast).

Choose a pet-friendly venue and double check with them about bringing pets.

Hire a pet sitter or dog walker to take care of your pets during the ceremony and reception. Think about your pet’s safety and well-being. Ensure there’s shelter, water, a designated toilet area, and a quiet space available for them during the event.

Bring along a pet bed, toys and their favourite treat.

Make sure your pets are comfortable wearing a collar and tags with your contact information.

Consider allergies and cultural requirements of guests; let them know your pet will be there.

Train pets, and if possible do practice runs before the wedding.

Better home design needed

To achieve year-round comfort, energy efficiency, including in warmer weather, and affordable, healthy, sustainable homes, we need to consider home design holistically.

Factors such as the orientation of the building site, the number and position of windows, shading, insulation, heating and cooling systems, and ventilation work together to determine the level of year-round comfort. As warm temperatures continue, the Building Research Association New Zealand (BRANZ) has studied home energy use and indoor conditions. Results indicate that indoor summer temperatures have risen by 6-10% over the past 20 years, and people are feeling the heat.

This rise in summer indoor temperatures occurs against a backdrop of outdoor temperatures increasing by 4-8% over the same period, according to NIWA data.

In-home monitoring data collected from 151 homes during summer 2023/4 suggests average temperatures have increased 6-10% or 1.3-2.1°C, depending on room and time of day, compared with 20 years ago when the original HEEP study was done.

BRANZ’s new data shows that average evening temperatures in both living rooms and bedrooms exceeded 24°C. More than one-third (36%) of the 310 bedrooms monitored were classed

as ‘overheating’, based on an industry method for assessing overheating risk in homes.

Approximately 70% of 425 households surveyed as part of the same study reported their home felt warmer than they would like at least some of the time in summer (48% ‘sometimes’ and 22% ‘always or often’).

This means more people felt warmer than they would like in summer than colder than they would like in winter (34% said ‘sometimes’ and 14% said ‘always or often’).

Considering the entire house in the design phase is a fundamental key principle.

BRANZ supports the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) proposal to move the industry towards using more sophisticated computer modelling to demonstrate energy e cient design. This will allow more flexibility and help tackle the issue of overheating.

An even more strategic, planned review of several other related aspects of the Building Code, such as interior environment, internal moisture and ventilation, would make the biggest di erence to year-round indoor comfort.

*A Canterbury-based high-performance and code-minimum study will be reported on in 2026.

Connecting with communities

I really enjoyed getting out and about promoting the Neighbours Aotearoa campaign last month.

The theme was Let’s Celebrate, encouraging us all to reach out to neighbours, and strengthen community connections.

I love nothing more than meeting the people doing great things in the community and hearing their stories. They all help make our city a vibrant place for everyone to enjoy.

I caught up with mosque attack survivor Farid Ahmed at his home last month. It was a day to remember the tragedy of 15 March 2019, although Farid always focuses on the positive outcomes from that horrendous event. Last year, Farid and volunteers showed love and compassion by distributing cake to 100 neighbouring homes as a way of building harmony in our community.

Another charity dear to my heart is Cholmondeley Children’s Centre in Governor’s Bay. My wife Chrissy and I went along to their Open Day and were amazed and humbled by what they do to o er kids 24/7 respite care, outdoor activities and cool learning experiences in times of family stress or crisis.

Our city is a much better place with community connection at its heart.

A

summer to remember

What a summer we just had in Ōtautahi Christchurch. From the revitalised World Buskers Festival to Crankworx and Electric Avenue, the city was buzzing with energy.

More than 70,000 people packed into North Hagley Park over two days for the annual summer festival, Electric Avenue, in February. Featuring international acts such as Chase and Status, The Kooks and The Prodigy, it was an incredible event and the excitement carried through the entire season, bringing people together in ways that make you proud to be a Cantabrian.

Christchurch is thriving, drawing young talent, entrepreneurs, and businesses eager to be part of the action. Major projects are near completion, and fresh opportunities are on the horizon.

The key to our success? Collaboration. When we come together, there’s no limit to what we can achieve. Here’s to keeping that momentum going through autumn and beyond, as we continue to rise and thrive.

No success without succession

The Mainzeal case highlights the importance of board skill sets and the need for succession planning.

Those points have come into sharp focus since Mainzeal because the financial situation was dire at the time. Had they reflected on whether they should have gotten expert advice, or considered stepping down, I wonder about the impact on their liability. As a result, today, ‘liability’ might reverberate more forcefully in the governance landscape, regardless of the type of board or industry. Directors can guard themselves against risk by expanding their knowledge. Like the need for continuous self-development to training at the gym or being in a relationship, ongoing work is required. Boards must have regular evaluations and members need to identify the right time to step down. There is a risk in people staying too long. There’s also an important aspect of maintaining institutional knowledge, so it’s about striking a balance to ensure you’re bringing your best self to the table.

Waking up each day to the sounds of the sea is becoming increasingly popular around

hristchurch has several coastal suburbs, including Brooklands, Spencerville, part of Styx, Queenspark, Parklands, Waimairi Beach, North New Brighton, New Brighton, South New Brighton, and Southshore.

Sumner and the New Brighton suburbs have all seen renewed development during the last four years, with numerous multi-million-dollar projects ranging from blocks of town houses to resort-style housing complexes under way or completed.

An example is the Anchorage project, being built in five stages across exclusive north-facing beach frontage along Sumner’s

Esplanade. The development features 10 single-level residences with private lift access to all buildings, starting at $1.5 million.

The benefits of coastal living are well documented, and ongoing research is increasingly highlighting the ocean as a therapeutic environment, good for body and mind.

Scientific research shows:

1. Listening to the sounds of the sea relaxes the brain, slows heart rates, lowers blood pressure, and relaxes the body.

2. You’re more likely to exercise if you’re by the coast. Surfing,

Canterbury, as more high spec beachside homes and projects are developed.

Canterbury, as more high spec beachside homes and projects are developed.

Leonie Freeman, council chief executive, says with housing a ordability an increasingly pressing issue, this reform could go a long way in ensuring that development is not unnecessarily hindered. She notes that development contribution fees have a significant impact on growth, both positively and negatively.

“Recently, some councils raised these fees by an astonishing 289%, pushing the total cost to approximately $100,000 per home, ultimately adding to the final purchase price for buyers. These increases are unsustainable and limit the ability to address the growing housing shortage.

“For too long, development contribution fees have lacked consistency, been used to fund infrastructure unrelated to the development area and remained entirely at the discretion of councils. This has led to unpredictable and, at times, unjustifiable costs for developers and, ultimately, home buyers,” says Leonie.

Spending focus

The new system promises to focus on ensuring development contributions are spent directly on infrastructure tied to the specific development areas.

“We’re encouraged that the new system aims to ensure development contributions are dedicated to infrastructure spending related to the area being developed. In the past, we’ve seen fees collected in

Drury [Auckland] used to fund projects like the Devonport Library, an approach that simply doesn’t add up,” says Leonie.

Looking ahead, she expressed cautious optimism about the potential of the new system, should it adhere to core principles.

“This reform is an important step towards creating a more sustainable and transparent approach to development in New Zealand.

“Our members need a system that guarantees consistent pricing and application across the country, a system that is transparent and well-regulated.

Consistency

Property Council has been a vocal proponent of an independent regulator to oversee development contribution fees and ensure greater consistency.

“An independent regulator will bring much-needed consistency to a system that has long been unpredictable. We hope this step will provide greater long-term certainty for development, benefiting both developers and the communities they serve.”

She adds that if the new system upholds principles of consistent pricing, accountability, and a standardised methodology nationwide under the new regulator, the building industry can look to the future with cautious confidence.

“This reform is an important step towards creating a more sustainable and transparent approach to development in New Zealand.”

Doors to adore

A quality garage door adds value to your property, and offers greater protection for your family. Good looks, robust construction, and modern technology are part of that quality.

Luxury lies in the little tools, services, and processes that make up our days. That’s where garage doors come in.

“Your garage door should run so smoothly that you barely register you have opened or closed it,” says Aaron Harvey, owner of Garador Christchurch. “When you take the time to consider your garage door, it should be a thing of beauty.”

Garage doors cover a large area, they’re often plainly visible from the street, and can contribute a great deal to the look of your home. When prepping a home for sale, a new garage door adds a great deal to the impression of a sleek, well cared for property.

If you are upgrading because you are staying put, a new sectional or roller door is going to enhance your quality of life every day. “Clients who trade up on a clunky automatic garage door or a manual one, and opt for a Garador with remote opener often tell us it has been life-changing. It’s just one of those everyday elements that can improve the way you start and finish your day,” says Aaron.

Garadors provide extra protection whereas ageing garage doors may be easier for thieves to access. “A new, snug-fitting garage door built from thick, quality local steel and operated by a secure garage door opener is your best bet for garage protection,” says Aaron. “Adding features such as smartphone garage door control takes it up a notch, contributing to peace of mind.”

The garage door motor should be capable of pulling the door for years, and should come with a warranty as Garadors do. “A quality garage door should most of all be reliable, smooth and fast. Be sure to check the motor in operation before you buy, listening for excess noise, and checking responsiveness,” says Aaron. He also advises that you check the steel thickness, or BMT. “Not all garage doors are created equal; the higher the BMT, the stronger your door will be. New Zealand steel has proven to be superior to some imported steel and that means less maintenance and fewer faults for the owner.”

Get cross with it

American researchers found that a hybrid, mid-rise CLT commercial building provided a 15-20 percent reduction in global warming potential, depending on the building design.

Research shows that properly designed CLT structures provide significant fire resistance, withstanding more than 90 minutes of burning before collapsing, compared with 17 minutes for a single-storey wood-frame home.

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) has emerged as a popular material of choice for residential and commercial buildings throughout New Zealand, in line with European and American trends.

Originally developed in Europe in the 1990s, CLT is a wood product made of several layers of structural grade lumber that are arranged crosswise and glued together.

One of its advantages is its strengthto-weight ratio, which is comparable to concrete, despite being five-times lighter. These days it is used as a sustainable alternative to form walls, roofs, floors and even ceilings.

CLT is a strong, tough, light-weight material with good performance in an earthquake, and because of its lightweight frame, a CLT structure isn’t likely to collapse as heavily on inhabitants during an earthquake compared to those made entirely of steel or concrete.

Faster installation is a huge benefit. CLT panels can be prefabricated at an o site manufacturing facility and then installed in a shorter time because fewer joints are needed between interior support elements.

Anna Davies Total Bookkeeping Ltd

Anna is a Xero Certified Advisor with over 17 years experience in bookkeeping. She started out in Wellington with a Chartered Accountancy practice before branching out on her own as a bookkeeper.

As a bookkeeper, what do you do?

In short, bookkeepers keep the financial side of a business organised and running smoothly. My main role is to record and maintain daily financial transactions for sole traders, contactors and small business owners. Why choose a Bookkeeper?

A bookkeeper will keep the records of all financial transactions accurate and organised. This will save you a big accountant bill at the end of the year, due to them not having to spend a huge amount of time fixing up the records from the financial year.

Are you different to an accountant then? Yes, they are two distinct roles. A bookkeeper records a business’s daily financial transactions—such as sales, purchases, and payments. An accountant is responsible for the interpretation, analysis and reporting of past financial data recorded by the bookkeeper.

What services do you offer?

I provide professional bookkeeping services, including:

• Recording daily financial transactions in Xero.

• Reconciling accounts by comparing bank statements with internal records to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies.

• Managing accounts payable (outgoing payments) and accounts receivable (incoming payments) against bills and invoices.

• Following up on late customer payments to maintain steady cash flow.

• Preparing GST returns and generating basic monthly financial reports, including profit and loss statements and balance sheets.

I’m keen, how do I contact you? Give me a call or email me a message, and we can arrange a time to chat about how I can help.

AWARD WINNING WOMEN

The Aoraki Foundation recently marked International Women’s Day with a wonderful event in Timaru. The Aoraki Women’s Fund Woman of the Year Award was presented to Roselyn Fauth – a name many of you may recognise. Roselyn has been key in so many local projects – not least of which has been the C-Play playground at Caroline Bay. Her work in arts, heritage, and community spaces creates a real impact in South Canterbury, so it was great to see her recognised for this.

The joy of giving

Joy Bruce knows what hardship feels like. She still remembers the difficulties of growing up in a solo parent home with broken furniture, outside toilets, leaning floors, and hand-me-down clothes.

“I know what it’s like to go without,” says Joy. “So, I also know how much it means to help someone when they’re on the bones of their bum and can’t see their way forward.”

This empathetic insight has driven Joy to spend the past 20 years volunteering her time so that others don’t have to go without.

“It started when my husband, Hamish, and I connected with the Samaritans to work on Operation Christmas Child, where shoeboxes are filled with gifts and sent to children in the Pacific Islands. From there, we set up a processing centre here at our business and began coordinating the packing and delivery of boxes from all around the South Island. It’s a very busy time, right before Christmas, whilst still running our business.”

“Each box must contain at least one hygiene product, one school or stationery product, and something for the child to love,” explains Joy.

“I still haven’t figured out how to fit a sports umbrella into a shoebox,” she laughs. “But I knew there would be someone who could benefit from them.” It took six years to pass all the umbrellas on, but during that time, Joy became a distributor for more and more large household items and started connecting with local social service providers and charities whose clients were in need of exactly what Joy was receiving.

Concurrently, Joy and Hamish noticed a trend within their own business, H & J Bruce Transport. “We often do household removals for elderly people, who are downsizing or moving into a care home. We found they were often unsure what to do with their furniture or household items as their children didn’t need them, and they wanted to get rid of it all but didn’t really know how. So we started offering to take it off their hands and pass it on to people who needed it.”

“Some of these people have nothing at all, so it’s very rewarding being able to provide a whole house lot for them.”

Initially, items were provided by a promotional printer that Joy had connected with. “They would send us things that were end of line, or the wrong colour, for example. We’d fill the boxes and add a wee teddy or something made by some amazing local ladies, so the children had something to love.” When the printer sent 20,000 sports umbrellas, Joy was faced with a new challenge.

With furniture and homewares now filling the Bruce’s distribution centre, Joy got to work finding new owners for all the goods. “I’m now in contact with about 60 non-profit organisations, like Multicultural Aoraki, Women’s Refuge and Presbyterian Support. They find out what their clients need and we’ll help sort them out. Some of these people have nothing at all, so it’s very rewarding being able to provide a whole house lot for them. I have learnt so much about the need in our community.”

With a steady stream of requests alongside 2000 to 3000 Operation Christmas Child boxes to coordinate annually, Joy and Hamish have built a supportive team around them. “We have an amazing young man, Luca, who has been helping us for years, and we also have volunteer groups who come and help at various times, as well as the ladies who make things for us.”

Of course, at the heart of it all, there’s that little girl who grew up with so little, now giving so much.

ANZAC Day

WORDS: PATTIE PEGLER | IMAGES SUPPLIED: SOUTH CANTERBURY MUSEUM

The word Anzac is part of the culture of New Zealanders and Australians. People talk about the ‘spirit of Anzac’; there are Anzac biscuits, and the two countries’ rugby league teams play an Anzac Day test. The word conjures up the shared heritage of two nations, but it also has a specific meaning.

ANZAC is an acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, a grouping of several divisions created early in the Great War of 1914–18. In December 1914 the Australian Imperial Force and New Zealand Expeditionary Force, both of which had just arrived in Egypt, were placed under the command of LieutenantGeneral William Birdwood. Initially the term Australasian Corps was suggested for the combined force, but Australians and New Zealanders were reluctant to lose their separate identities. No one knows who came up with the term Anzac.

It is likely that Sergeant K.M. Little, a clerk in Birdwood’s headquarters, thought of it for use on a rubber stamp: ‘ANZAC’ was convenient shorthand, and became the telegraph code word for the corps.

The Anzacs first saw action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. The small cove where the Australian and New Zealand troops landed was quickly dubbed Anzac Cove. Soon the word was being used to describe all the Australian and New Zealand soldiers fighting on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Later it came to mean any Australian or New Zealand soldier.

The Poppy

The red poppy that many wear on ANZAC Day signifies remembrance. It’s an internationally recognised symbol that sprang up from the Western Front in WW1. Poppies apparently thrive on disturbed land – and the churned up, shelled mud and ground of the battlefields saw these distinctive red

flowers popping up all around. They even provided the inspiration for the poem In Flanders Field by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel, John McCrae.

“In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row…”

The poem was written in May 1915, after McCrae witnessed the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer who was just 22. McCrae himself died of pneumonia and meningitis in January 1918 in a British military hospital in France. It was that same year that an American teacher and humanitarian, Moina Michael, read his poem in a magazine and decided to campaign to make the poppy a symbol of remembrance to honour the war dead.

The Dawn Service

The tradition of a dawn service on ANZAC day draws on history. The ANZAC forces started landing on the Gallipoli peninsula at dawn. The following year, on 25 April 1916, an Australian battalion held a dawn service on the Western Front to remember their fallen colleagues. That dawn service marked the start of the traditional dawn services now held to commemorate ANZAC day. These now take place all over New Zealand and Australia.

The dawn bugle call, often played at these services, is called The Last Post It is often used at military funerals to mark the soldier going to his last resting place. At ANZAC ceremonies it is usually played before the minute’s silence to remember those killed in battle.

IMAGES SUPPLIED: MAREE HYNES INTERIORS

We asked award-winning interior designer Maree Hynes for her view on upcoming or trendy interior styles for 2025.

“We have started another busy year and have seen colour creeping back into people's homes. Dark, moody colours give warmth to spaces: greens, mochas, rich velvets, chocolate brown and tan leather furniture. Use shades that provide an opportunity to layer colours and textures. One of the best things about working in this industry is watching the old ideas make a comeback, albeit in a slightly different format. No one can afford to decorate their homes to follow every trend so you must stay true to what you love.

Wallpaper is playing a huge part in people's interior choices. The wallpaper selection we have here at Maree Hynes Interiors is exciting and people are getting amazing choices for their homes. Everything from murals to animal prints is making an appearance. Bold interior design allows people to put their personality into their homes and really make it their own.

Not everything has to be bold, though. Some people still want the neutral tones and textures and enhance these with stunning furniture choices and colourful soft furnishings. Here at our showroom we have a large selection of soft furnishings and have also been buying a lot of one-off antique statement pieces that have been hugely popular with our clients.

Even though we are heading into winter, people are still wanting amazing outdoor spaces. Your outdoor areas can be designed to be just as comfortable and beautiful as your indoors. Beautiful weather-resistant rugs, fabric, and furniture help you to achieve this.

Proud to grow great female leaders

Presbyterian Support South Canterbury (PSSC) is proud to be a local organisation growing great female leaders. The 560-strong team, which operates PSSC’s three key services and the corporate administration team, is heavily dominated by women.

“At PSCC we are women-led, and we’re proud to be an organisation where women can become great leaders,” says CEO Carolyn Cooper, who has been with the organisation for 22 years; the last seven at the helm.

Presbyterian Support South Canterbury has been helping the local community for over 106 years through its key offerings: Enliven Aged Care Services, Family Works, and Refugee Settlement Services.

In almost every department – including the senior management team – you’ll find women leading the charge.

Enliven Aged Care Services boasts four Enliven Aged Care Homes - The Croft, Margaret Wilson, Strathallan and Wallingford – each run by a female Nurse Manager. “We also have a woman in the position of Enliven Liaison Manager - the first face families see when someone goes into our resthomes/cottages/apartments or dementia-level care plus a female Manager at Strathallan Lifecare,” explains Carolyn.

Enliven Aged Care Services also operates Te Pokapū Day Service for those living with dementia, and Enliven Community Services where clients are looked after within their own home.

“Enliven Aged Care Service aims to create an age-friendly community where people are happy and thriving, regardless of their age or ability. From residential living to hospital, dementialevel care and also home-based care, PSSC supports older people to change their address, not their lifestyle.”

At Family Works, women are also the majority, with three out of four team leader roles filled by female staff, along with the Practice Leader, who has stepped up into the role of Acting GM.

“Our Family Works Service support children and families with wrap-around social services to achieve positive and lasting change within their lives. Services are ultimately about making South Canterbury the best place in the world to grow up – a place where all tamariki are safe, whānau are strong, and communities connected.”

“Here at PSSC, we value all our team equally,” sums up Carolyn. “But we are exceedingly proud of the growth and leadership opportunities we provide women in our workplace.”

"Bold interior design allows people to put their personality into their homes and really make it their own."

What is your business focus?

Our business focus is to provide the best service to our wonderful people that we possibly can. To make sure we can get everyone where they need to go, while making the experience for them enjoyable.

What influenced your career choice?

I love helping people, and I get to help people everyday. Its so wonderful being able to look after our most vulnerable people from our community and make sure they can go out safely, while still keeping their independence.

What is unique about your business?

We really care. Our team are all amazing and they genuinely want to look after people.

One of our wonderful clients said ‘it’s like going out with your daughter!’

We go into their house to pick them up and take them into their appointments, we don’t just drop. We also make sure they are safely inside on their return. You can rest assured we look after your parents or children the same way as we would look after our own. We really are ‘family when family can’t be there’.

If you could change one thing about running a business in South Canterbury, what would it be?

We would really love there to be less roadworks!

Nicola Sorenson Travel

What is your business focus? I help clients plan, organise, and book travel experiences that are tailored to their specific preferences and budgets.

What is unique about your business? I have a separate office at home which is convenient as I can work around meeting times. A more personalised service, getting to know my clients does help with planning a holiday.

To what do you attribute your success within your industry?

I have a great rapport with my clients, I started in the industry back in 1989 so I know where to find, and book the best deals. It is a privilege to be able to prepare and deliver a travel itinerary to suit my clients needs, something I don’t take for granted.

What gets you out of bed in the morning? I love my job, I love my clients, I look forward to booking and planning holidays. No two days are ever the same, it is very rewarding and a positive industry to work in.

What have been some of the highlights of your business journey?

I have been very fortunate to have travelled extensively during my career, seen some amazing sights and met some wonderful people. I became a homebased travel broker with NZ Travelbrokers 14 years ago. The support, buying power and constant market training we have is excellent. I have been in the Top 10 sales bracket within our company ever since I started, a personal achievement I am proud of. Having repeat clients now for over 25 years, my greatest highlight are the holidays I have been able to create – helping people make their own memories.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? How does that align with where you are now? I always wanted to be a travel agent.

Partner at HC Partners LP

What is your business focus?

HC Partners LP is a well-respected accounting firm. My areas of expertise are in accounting and taxation, with a particular passion for the rural sector.

What influenced your career choice? Accountancy is one of those professions that can get you a job all over the world. Of course, there are differences in law and tax rules wherever you are situated, but if you are willing to put the work in to learn and ask questions, the country doesn’t matter.

Have you had to upskill, or do further education, to get where you are now? When I moved to NZ I had to do additional papers (mainly law and tax) to convert my qualification, all while working and having a family. It was hard work at the time, but worth it all in the end.

What do you get up to when you’re not working? I am a classically trained singer. A lot of my spare time is spent singing in concerts or shows, and I am currently rehearsing for the part of Miss Andrew (aka The Nasty Nanny!) in Variety Theatre Ashburton’s “Mary Poppins” This runs from 14th to 24th May at the Ashburton Event Centre, and the best bit is that I get to travel with four friends who are cast members from Timaru, none of whom I would have met if it wasn’t for music. If I am not doing music things, I can usually be found watching our son play cricket or rugby or other sports – we have spent a LOT of time doing this over the years.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? How does that align with where you are now? I wanted to be a police officer like my father and watching Cagney and Lacey as I grew up. I guess being an accountant is a bit like that with all the rule following just without the flashing lights and getting to lock people up.

A business woman to watch

Some women just ‘get’ business. Charlotte Parker of Timaru is one of them. She knew early on in life that she wanted to own her own beauty clinic, and by the age of 27 that’s exactly what she was doing.

“Blush Beauty Clinic was created to help clients feel their best,” explains Charlotte. “From facials and laser hair removal, to body sculpting and tailored skin memberships, I wanted to open a clinic that provided results-driven, high-quality skin and beauty treatments in a space where clients feel comfortable, confident, and cared for.”

Eight years on, Blush Beauty Clinic is a business success however you look at it: from its steady growth, to its team of professional, experienced staff, and its slew of happy regular customers.

With everything in hand, when the opportunity arose to purchase another local business, the decision was a nobrainer for this business maven.

“My partner, Juran, and I recently purchased The Heat Pump Shop – a local company specialising in all aspects of residential and light commercial heat pump systems, serving clients across the South Island.”

Whether treating beauty clients, or providing professional heat pump advice, repairs and servicing, the savvy couple are always focused on staff, service and community.

“We pride ourselves on our customer-first approach, offering expert advice and reliable service. We also believe in supporting our teams by working alongside them and providing a great environment where they can thrive, grow and succeed.”

“I’m still learning, growing. Every day, I wake up excited and motivated to keep pushing forward and making a difference.”

Heat pumps might be a long way from personalised skin subscriptions, but with a solid business head on her shoulders, and the opportunity to learn the ropes from previous owners Michelle and Jim, Charlotte is geared up for the challenge of running both businesses.

“I’m still learning, growing. Every day, I wake up excited and motivated to keep pushing forward and making a difference.”

Building professional relationships is also high on Charlotte and Juran’s list. “Collaboration brings mutual benefits. By supporting and uplifting each other we foster growth, strengthen our industry, and contribute to a thriving local network.”

One such relationship is with Mitsubishi Electric. “The Heat Pump Shop is a leading dealer and master agent of Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps. We have extensive knowledge of their products, and there is a strong community link between Mitsubishi Electric and The Heat Pump Shop.”

Rise in female lawyers noted at local firm

According to the New Zealand Law Society, women are dominating the law profession here in New Zealand. The organisation’s 2023 Snapshot of the Legal Profession reported 54.6% of lawyers in New Zealand identified as female. In the 0-7 PQE (post qualification experience) category, that figure rose to 64.2%.

“There still seems to be quite the perception that law firms are all run by men,” says Sharon Morton, Practice Manager at Timaru’s Timpany Walton Lawyers. “Here at Timpany Walton we have a 50/50 split of men and women in our partnership.

“The statistics show that there are more and more women in the profession, and we’re certainly seeing that here, with a higher ratio than the national average. Of our 15 practising lawyers, only four are male.”

Sharon acknowledges that gender is not of any relevance when it comes to providing expert legal advice and support, yet that the rise in female law professionals is notable within a practice that has

been serving the local community for almost 100 years.

“Timpany Walton Lawyers has been operating in Timaru since the 1930s. We’re a general practice law firm offering expertise in commercial law, family law, litigation, property law, employment agreements and disputes, farming, first-home buyers, asset protection and estate planning, and criminal law.”

“We have such a long, proud history here in South Canterbury and we’ve seen a lot of change in the profession since we started out. Nowadays, when we advertise for new team members, the majority of applications by far are from female applicants. We’re thrilled to see so many knowledgeable and enthusiastic young women coming up through the profession.”

The women and men of Timpany Walton Lawyers are known for their strong reputation founded on trust, superior service and expertise across all areas of law. They’re also recognised locally for their support and commitment to a range of South Canterbury charities and events.

“Here at Timpany Walton, we’re about people, first and foremost,” sums up Sharon. “We are a firm of professional and experienced lawyers, but at the heart of it all, we’re also just regular people, like you, and we aim to deliver a down-to-earth experience to each and every one of our valued clients.”

What is your business focus? We are extremely proud to offer our customers a unique experience for their pets, enabling them to have a carefree holiday knowing their pets are happy and are being cared for by experienced and skilled animal lovers.

What is unique about your business? We are proud to offer full board for cats and dogs, daycare, and a full grooming service. We cater for special diets and medication administration. All our services are carried out by our skilled team of genuine animal lovers.

What gets you out of bed in the morning? The passion I feel for the animals and dedication to the business. I have always felt it is a privilege to work with animals. It was never easy establishing Pampered Pets as it took a lot of time and effort but I wouldn’t hesitate to do it all over again.

What do you like about doing business in South Canterbury? I have been operating Pampered Pets for 23 years now and I am a firm believer in supporting local businesses, such as buying all of my pet food locally. Another example would be when I established my grooming studio using various local tradesmen.

Selese Rowe Travel Broker

What is unique about your business? I don’t have a lot of overheads so it was easy (apart from the obvious) to hibernate over Covid.

I love working from home. I can’t picture working from anywhere else except when I am on holiday – I’ve had some rather neat offices during my travels. One of my favourites looking out our ship window while sailing through the Norwegian Fiords or the Rhine River.

What skills are needed to be successful in your industry? A Diploma in Tourism and Travel, focusing on business management and leadership. A lot of people think because you can book online that our job must be easy. That is certainly not the case.

Have you had to upskill, or do further education, to get where you are now? I attend every webinar possible and complete regular training through tourism boards and airline and supplier programs. This keeps my knowledge fresh and up to date and has also opened doors to incredible trips and prizes — there’s no substitute for firsthand destination experience when it comes to offering genuine recommendations.

What have been some of the highlights of your business journey? Definitely an after Covid resurgence. Last year I was named the Singapore Airlines Supporter of the year within our Travel Managers group. Plus, being able to visit the most amazing places.

What do you get up to when you’re not working? I am fortunate enough to travel often. I do love being at home though – in the garden or out walking with our Jack Russell. I am slowly painting my way through our house.

Feeling peckish? Our South Canterbury towns are bursting with great options – from international cuisine to traditional dishes and award-winning coffee, we have it all. Whatever your appetite – there’s something that will appeal.

“It was time for an update, so we have taken that upon ourselves and introduced a fresh new look and feel,” exclaims owner Guri Chahal.

“While we’ve modernised the dining and bar space, what we’re most excited about are our new menus, offering diners some delicious, contemporary additions alongside a few of their old favourites.”

From the classics - like roast of the day, battered blue cod and ribeye steak - through to the newer offerings like prawn bisque, the cajun buttermilk fried chicken burger, and the pear and walnut salad, every menu item has been carefully considered and beautifully constructed for optimum taste and value.

Located on Geraldine’s main street, which also happens to be the direct line for through traffic between Christchurch and Queenstown, The Village Inn’s location has long been a boon for thirsty locals and hungry travellers alike.

Mackenzie Highland A&P Show

Easter Monday, 21 April 2025

The Mackenzie A & P Highland Show is a key date on the South Canterbury calendar. This year the show marks its 127th anniversary and promises to be packed with stalls, displays, competition entries and all those wonderful country events like the sheep dog trials and wood chopping. With visitors in the thousands and entertainment for all the family, it’s also a firm favourite with the Essence South Canterbury team.

This year Deano Yipadee, otherwise known as the ‘Nee Naw Man’ will be making a live appearance. This much-loved children’s author and entertainer will have the littlies laughing and singing along at the main stage. There is also something to keep the grown ups happy with live music from the Bedford School of Music performers scheduled during the day.

Elsewhere there will be plenty to see with entries on display for all sorts of the traditional A & P events. As well as a whole host of livestock, shearing and equestrian events, there will be Highland dancing, drumming, archery, fencing, and vintage machinery. Visitors can see entries for everything from homegrown produce to baked goods, floral displays and wearable art. There is a National Golden Fleece competition and display of woollen products, Shearing competition, children’s agri-sports, DogsNZ show, and a pet tent.

For those that like a little shopping there are also plenty of stalls with all sorts of interesting

treasures. Once you’ve worked up an appetite there’s a wide range of yummy snacks and treats. So, whatever you’re up to this Easter weekend, make some time to head along to the Mackenzie A & P Highland Show. It’s a great day out and as Show Secretary, Jodi Payne, says “You get a full day of entertainment for all the family, for less than the cost of going to the movies.”

No pet dogs please!

As in previous years, the show organisers are asking visitors not to take their pet dogs along to the show due to the prevalence of sheep measles. If you are entered in a competition, have an guide/assistance dog or have any questions regarding this, please contact the secretary.

Want to help out?

The Show Committee would like to extend an open invitation for Show Helpers. They are always looking for people to lend a hand setting up, taking down and on the day and it doesn’t mean you have to ‘join’ the committee. If you can help out at this wonderful country show, then contact Jodi Payne, Secretary, on 021 713 033 or email mackenzieapsociety@gmail.com

Getting the Mix Right:

Balancing Variety and Consistency in Business.

There’s an interesting relationship that exists between the elements of variety and consistency and, as a leader, I’m often in a conundrum about how to effectively integrate these two things.

Variety, as we know, is a state of being ‘different’ or ‘diverse’. It’s the absence of uniformity or monotony. It’s that quality that brings a sense of thrill and excitement, and in business you need that to create engagement. It also dispels boredom and increases creativity.

Consistency, however, is also a vital ingredient when you consider a formula for success. It’s the act of behaving or performing in a similar way and creating similar outcomes.

There’s something deeply appealing about consistent performance. There’s a uniformity and a deep sense of reliability. You can trust what’s going to happen: it’s predictable and structured. And the people you work with in this space are both dependable and trusted.

But there’s a sweet spot when you get a blend of both consistency and variety.

High creativity, but not so much that outcomes take second place to endless fun, and then there are consistent structures that provide for vital business stability.

It’s still playing by the rules but stretching some of them into a new shape.

Business, in all its shapes and sizes, pivots off this and as I head into business-planning territory, I’m thinking about how to get the blend just right.

So, what am I thinking? What’s best? What are the risk factors of getting the mix wrong? Such as when I was asked by a rather short-term manager if they could manage people working in the office remotely from their home rather than physically coming in! The answer was a two-letter word delivered rather bluntly as I struggled to see the value to anyone other than the person making the request. That’s the problem with too much variation.

So how do you keep your team –and in our case large team – moving forward?

What does momentum look like?

How can you retain precious constructive (and consistent) structures without losing Gen Zs to boredom?

It’s a very real, very First World problem and it’s important to me.

I’m driven by the desire to improve, for first-class to be world-class performance, and for decades of outstanding results to be sustained, so I’ll need to think hard, listen to the ideas everyone has, commit and then jump into the future.

After all, as Daniel Gilbert (author of Stumbling on Happiness) puts it, “The secret of happiness is variety, but the secret of variety, like the secret of all spices, is knowing when to use it.”
