WHERE CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION MEET The corner of Kilmore Street and Park Terrace continues to display creativity and innovation.

Y

ou may have driven past this site over the past couple of weeks and wondered what was being put together atop Cathedral Grammar’s Junior School. First, we had the slide off the roof, and now to accompany this we have added an amazing new playground structure for our pupils to explore, climb in and through, and have fun with. The new Junior School, being located on such a high-profile arterial transport route, had to be the jewel in the crown for the school. This aim was achieved, with it being named the supreme winner for all commercial buildings ($2m - $5m) in New Zealand in 2016. A significant feature of the building is the play area on top of the building. This space is small but unique, therefore we wanted to enhance pupil’s use of the

area by building a play structure that will provide pupils with hours of fun, that stands out from regular play equipment and that will become a recognisable feature of our school. Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 Design was brought onboard to meet this brief and has well and truly achieved this, and more. Pippin has used the profile of the Southern Alps as the inspiration for the design, and has creatively put together a structure that is different, bold and innovative. He has also hit the mark with our pupils; they absolutely love the opportunity to interact with something that is so very different. The bold and innovative design is a pointer towards the mindset of our school as we look to the future. We will, this term, be sharing with our community our revised vision and strategy and

are excited about the possibilities and challenges ahead as we set about evolving and adapting the learning and teaching opportunities at Cathedral Grammar for every pupil, every day. It has been wonderful to welcome an increasing number of new families into our school community, with particular growth in our Pre-School and Junior School. For the first time in many years we have opened our third and final new entrant class this term, with a waiting list close to being in place. It is with this growth in mind that we embark on the initial planning stages of our exciting next building project. Watch this space! We look forward to elaborating further on our plans for the future with you at our Open Day on 22 August. Come and see the difference we can make and provide for your child - Scott Thelning, Principal.

ringing the wonder and magic of live theatre to as many people as possible is The Court Theatre’s raison d’etre. The Court is a theatre for the community and at no time will this be more clearly shown than during the month of September. A true cultural fest (or feast) will be on stage – a diverse and varied programme that will appeal to just as diverse an audience. So much will be going on that we can give you just a mere taste. Many of us

remember the mad-cap, rum-fuelled Hudson and Halls TV cooking show of the 1980s. Well, they are recreated at The Court, which is converted into a television studio from 6 September through until 14 October. Expect mayhem and very questionable cooking in Hudson & Halls Live! From 8 – 16 September, The Court is proud to host an emerging Pasifika theatre performance by Tulou Productions. Matai explores the journey of one young

Samoan man living in New Zealand as he strives to find a balance between traditional and modern life. From 6 – 9 September, professional “improv” teams from Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin will compete in the National Theatresports Championships, entertainment that is sure to appeal to all ages. Then, as if to prove the adage “once an improviser always an improviser”, a troupe of Jesters from yesteryear return to The Court’s Stage for one night and one night only (10 September) in Scriptless: First Class. But before this wealth of theatre variety begins don’t forget that the stunning production of Steel Magnolias has another two weeks to run.

BEAUTIFUL FASHION in focus The lay of the fashion land – one which takes no prisoners - is simple but significant: be restlessly creative, a collaborative curator and a great listener when it comes to honouring the feedback of your brand loyalists.

F

ounder of BLAK, Teresa Hodges, is anything but a box ticker by nature, yet she rises effortlessly and elegantly to every challenge and opportunity, with a steadfast

Every brand has an aesthetic story; how has your visual narrative evolved to what it is today? BLAK started as simplistic beautiful every day pieces that complement your life – “Off Duty Style Elevated”. Once we cracked the weekend wardrobe formula, we evolved pretty quickly adding mini collections of more polished event and workwear dressing that our customers can create and express their own individual carefree look with.

12 August 17, 2017 Metropol

commitment to never sweating the small stuff. Metropol talks to Teresa about the finer details of how she has led BLAK to become one of New Zealand’s most adored fashion identities.

In an era where we have seemingly ‘seen it all’ how do you continue to stoke the curiosity of your brand loyalists? Our focus is on the experience and connection as a brand that we provide for our customers. From the interior design of the stores, to our staff members who are all trained as stylists to assist in putting together the right pieces for your wardrobe - building blocks for year round outfits.

We are not so much into the old tradition of two large seasonal drops, the brand drops fresh mini transeasonal releases throughout the year directing to what our customers may need at that time, such as event dressing, luxury layering pieces, holiday must haves. I am also really big on details - quality over quantity, distinct captivating fabrications and trimmings, beautiful fashion over fast fashion!

one on one

For mere mortals like us, the prospect of coming up with new ideas each season seems fairly bewildering, how do you deal with creative challenges and do you ever get ‘designers block?’ I find I can get a creative block if I haven’t surrounded myself with ‘things’; creativity for me comes from books/ imagery/fabrics/trims/colours/environment, so generally I can hit the ground running once I have collected my library of cool stuff for the collection. Then I am off and tend to go totally overboard, always needing the team to assist in curating the collection down, selecting their favorites and what would work for our customers. It is a dynamic meeting which really helps the collection to be the best it can be, especially as I get totally committed to each style and would have hundreds if I could!

Crush Top and Admirer Pants

What have been some of the most significant milestones for the brand? The recent opening of our Newmarket store. Each of our stores provides brand presence, showcasing what we do for our customers and allows us to have such key communication with them. The addition of Newmarket has been incredible. Newmarket customers and NM Association are so supportive and have welcomed us to the family with open arms. Adding our BLAK Bridesmaids made to order collection has been an amazing journey and adds such heartfelt moments to what we do, traveling along the journey with our brides and seeing how each showcase their unique style with the collection is phenomenal! What does a day in the life of you look like? Every single day is different! I have to wear a lot of hats, which I do love as I tend to get bored easily if I am working on one task, so this ever-changing world totally fuels my creativity. My day can cover anything from: Design – creating new colour palettes, traveling to select fabrics and trims overseas, putting together design stories for the next collection and discussing this whole new look and feel to our Pattern Team who turn the ideas into reality. In Store – meetings with our Operations and Brand Managers on what’s happening in the stores, upcoming event planning, our customers - who they are and how we are connecting with them. Production – discussing with our manufacturers how we are tracking, booking in upcoming orders, problem solving any areas in need. And being the Director – looking at the business as an overall, where can we improve how can we do ‘more’.

Vision of Love Top and Run to You Cullottes

I am also really big on details; beautiful fashion over fast fashion! Are there any special plans on the horizon you can share? We are launching our second swim collection in October. With such a remarkable reaction to our first collection we are so excited to be expanding on this! There is also another new addition to the BLAK brand that is in sampling stages, so I can’t quite let you in on the secret yet, but watch this space, it will be something for everyone that you will live in! Do you have a favourite mantra? Don’t sweat the small stuff. With business in general and garment production there are always hurdles to jump. If you don’t sweat the small stuff, you can move on and move over those to the next big thing!

Ema is an award-winning graphic artist, illustrator and ceramic designer. Her enchanting creations with a distinctive, dream-like style are the protagonists in many a medium – limited edition postcards, gift cards, prints, ceramics and totes. It is Ema’s work that embraces and powerfully embodies a fusion of Japanese culture and Maori folklore. Cathy’s jewellery seeks to revolutionise bling in a classic style. Her new collection, ‘The Snowflakes and Jasper’ collection features a spinning gemstone necklace, modern angled hoop earrings, and cocktail rings. This go-to gemstone jewellery is available in semi-precious Snowflake Obsidian or Red Jasper. Flox is known and celebrated for her trademark native birds, ferns and flowers that exude vibrant, confident colour. Delicate hand-cut stencil work is a true show stealer and her ever-popular handpainted wooden rounds, prints, stationery items and ambient light boxes have recently been joined by a new range of women’s singlets, tees, and long sleeve tops. pectrum Fashion Show, 23rd September at Christchurch Art Gallery, will be an upmarket event with fashion designers from around Canterbury showcasing their fabulous creations to an audience targeted towards professionals, corporates and fashion enthusiasts. Kanchan Singh-McAuley, Event Manager at Gold Lion Events, says they chose SPCA Canterbury as their donated fundraiser because animals have no voice to protest against maltreatment. “These are our animals, in our backyards; this is an opportunity to help make a positive difference in their lives.” Kanchan says there has been a great response from Canterbury businesses banding together for this event. “Nine sponsors, plus eleven designers and boutiques have been incredibly generous with their time, expertise, and the waiving of usual fees to make this happen.” Jacqueline Campbell, Community Fundraising Coordinator for the SPCA, is thrilled about the event. “Operating costs, just for Canterbury SPCA, are in excess of $3 million per annum; without funding at local government level, community generosity is crucial. Gold Lion Events have been fantastic in raising attention to our organisation. It’s going to make a huge difference!” Tickets are available through Eventbrite – ‘The Spectrum Fashion Show’. THE STREET ART SIDE

Street art has a long and loaded history. From the birth of Berlin’s Street Art Movement when the Soviet Union erected the Berlin Wall, to the politically-rich rhetoric applied with artistic prowess onto the city walls of Fort Kochi in India; street art is a universal language. In our own little corner of the world, blank canvasses and gloomy gaps have had new life breathed into them by an artistic community championing a powerful and

positive creative campaign in Christchurch. A free and enriching way to spend a weekend or day off, the street art works re-energising our public spaces are well worth exploring.

HERE ARE THE TOP PICKS:

1.

Owen Dippie Originally hailing from Hawkes Bay, Owen Dippie is an internationally successful New Zealand artist. Located on Manchester Street, between Tuam & St Asaph, Dippie’s mural featuring a family of some of our favourite gentle giants – elephants – is a sight to behold.

2.

Rone With an arresting gazing that strikes a chord on a very emotive level, this artwork by Australian street artist, Rone, is an absolute must-see. Rone’s work is described on pocketsofawesome.co.nz as “locating the friction point between beauty and decay, the lavish and despoiled, creating an iconic form of urban art.” Located on Worcester Street, near Cathedral Square.

3.

Seth Situated on Falsgrave Street, between Stevens Street and Moorhouse Avenue, French artist Seth Land’s artwork is imbued with layers of meaning. Its polysemous narrative will be subjective to the individual. Seth Land is the director of “Les Nouveaux Explorateur”.

4.

Joel Hart Located in New Brighton Mall, this piece pays homage to Christchurch Street Artist Joel Hart’s wider collection that fixates on the female face. Ethereal and elegant, this is worth the adventure out to the beach.

5.

Tilt French Street Artist Tilt’s work – best viewed from the Christchurch Casino carpark lot – pays lip service to pop culture. As described by pocketsofawesome.co.nz this is a “bubble letter figurative accumulation” which while distinctly random, is also an appropriate summation.

Let’s make life a lot simpler.

Tilly &

the Titanium

The gorgeous and super-friendly Tilly, a rescued collie-whippet cross, was one day found limping.

O

Tilly’s recovery has been textbook perfect. The titanium wedge eventually becomes integrated with the surrounding bone allowing it to regain all its original strength so Tilly can return to her normal boisterous lifestyle.

wners Carolyn and Mark, who would do anything for their beloved Tilly, took her in to Ourvets for assessment and radiographs. After palpating the leg and looking at x-rays, Dr John Ingles realised he was looking at damage to the cruciate ligaments in Tilly’s knee. He says it’s a very common orthopaedic injury often associated with slowly degenerating changes to the cruciate ligament itself, which develops as dogs get older. Dogs then rupture the ligament by vigorous play or trauma. When this happens to the cruciate in one leg, a dog is at risk of rupturing the other side, and this can be as high as 35-40 percent. In Tilly’s case, it’s not obvious what caused her injuries. However, an exuberant personality probably points to some energetic antics being to blame! So, after discussion with Mark and Carolyn, a ‘tibial tuberosity advancement’ (TTA) was recommended. This redirects the forces occurring within the stifle joint to a more neutral and stable position. The technique is new technology developed in Christchurch by Dr Brent Higgins and Seamus Tredinnick at OssAbility. Tilly received a titanium implant, inserted in such a way that the loss of her cruciate ligament no longer compromised the stability of her stifle and allowed her to again lead a happy, active life. Tilly’s rehabilitation was superlative, helped by Tilly’s ‘parents’ following Dr Ingles’ instructions precisely. This relatively recent technology represents the best cruciate rupture repair currently known to veterinary surgeons, Dr Ingles says.

LUXURY LIVING IN THE CITY CENTRE As Christchurch city morphs into the architectural, cultural and social masterpiece it is destined to become, the stage is set for luxury living.

T

he Verve Precinct is rising – quite literally – to the occasion, with a choice of one, two and three bedroom apartments defined by contemporary aesthetics, sophistication and design excellence thanks to lead architect Cymon Allfrey. At the helm of the development’s sales is Adam Heazlewood, an award-winning agent from reputable Bayleys. Heazlewood is justly proud of his integral involvement with a project inspired by a desire to create exceptional living for the Garden City. Heazlewood’s leadership with the project most certainly owes to a commendable reputation that precedes him, but beyond this, there is a special connect for him with The Verve. “I actually used to live in the previous apartments on this site – The Establishment. My family lived there for over five years,” Heazlewood says with a

smile. “It is really exciting to see that The Verve will be the first, or at least one of the first, to meet that luxurious apartment standard. It ticks all of the boxes – convenience, views and location.” Heazlewood isn’t wrong. The precinct - which extends across two buildings with an additional four-level development connected to the building by a raised, landscaped podium - is the distilled essence of sophistication. The same quality will carry through to the apartments. Every residence will feature its own privacy balcony or patio boasting a stunning outdoor living area with each apartment laid out to maximise space and livability. Meticulous attention to detail will deliver a hybrid of style and function, reflecting thoughtful design. “We actually have an on-site show unit with all of the finishes to take the guesswork out of the equation. The apartments will be engineered to post-

quake codes – an incredibly high standard.” Appealing to diverse demographics, from individuals, professionals and couples through to young families, the 11-storey apartment precinct is very unique in its height and scope. “It is a statement building,” Heazlewood confirms. “The 11-storeys are possible due to existing rights from The Establishment.” Initial interest is not only palpable but outstanding. “We’ve sold almost half with buyers a mix of investors and owneroccupiers,” Heazlewood reveals. “From an investment point of view, buyers are looking not just at what the city will be when the development is completed early 2019, but what this North West area of the city will continue to offer in the future.” With an estimated average cost of only $3000 a year for Body Corporate fees, and apartments priced from $520,000, luxury apartment living has never looked more attractive.

in the city BROADWAY MUSICAL COMES TO CHRISTCHURCH

At just 21 years of age it’s to be expected that Sister Act actor Monique Clementson wouldn’t have much idea of what life was like in 1978 for her lead character Deloris Van Cartier.

H

owever, Clementson is a big ‘70s fan who grew up listening to gospel and disco hits, and counts Sister Act I and II as her favourite movies. Growing up in Nelson, she and her older brother would compete to find who could sing the high notes in the gospel hits that featured in the Sister Act movies. It wasn’t until Clementson attended the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA) in 2014 that she realised her favourite movies had been turned into a Broadway musical featuring all new original music.

“There is something about ‘70s music that makes you feel happy,” says Clementson. And nothing makes her happier than playing the role of a wannabe disco diva, and singing gospel and disco songs specially written for the show by Tony and Oscar award-winning composer Alan Menken (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and Little Shop of Horrors). Clementson has just completed a season of Sister Act with Invercargill Musical Theatre in which she was described as having impeccable comedic timing and a voice full of power, emotion and soul. “She owns the role,” said one reviewer. “Her performance is perfect.” Seasoned performer Nick Purdie will perform the role of her gangster boyfriend, Curtis. He also played alongside Clementson as cop and love interest ‘Sweaty’ Eddie in the Invercargill production. Clementson and Purdie will be joined on-stage by a cast of more than 50 nuns, gangsters, altar boys, singers, dancers, musicians and the Pope, to create a stunning looking and sounding show with all the pizzazz of Broadway. The Showbiz Christchurch production of Sister Act – A Divine Musical Comedy will be at the Isaac Theatre Royal from 8-23 September. Tickets are available from ticketek.co.nz/showbiz or 0800 842 538.

STYLISH ACT We’re sure, like us, fellow fashionistas were immediately fawning over today’s front cover – a special tribute to the star of Showbiz’s highly anticipated Sister Act, Monique Clementson.

Y

ou’ve no doubt devoured the preceding two pages dedicated to introducing one of the standout shows of this year, and here’s the lowdown on how our front cover look came together. Paying homage to the era, we knew we needed to channel a disco diva ‘70s vibe, but in a way that felt contemporary and relevant to the current sartorial epoch. Fortunately for us, the seventies style is back in a fierce way in 2017 with oversized hoop earrings, metallic, untamed curls, velvet, psychedelic prints, florals and furs all dominating the fashion scene. Our first instinct was to approach the style haven that is Lynn Woods boutique on Victoria Street, knowing it holds an extensive range of Trelise Cooper whose collections embody so much of the elegance and eclecticism we were striving for in equal measure. In collaboration with the fabulous stylists, we selected the Feather Feather Land Jacket and Travelling Frillbury Top by Trelise Cooper. From here, we engaged some of the

Calling all

BEAUTY ADDICTS By Kate Pierson

While impulsive purchases can see a lot of our beauty buys sent into early retirement, or reluctance to let things go can see our makeup kits heaving with dated products that used to hold our hearts; a new season means… you guessed it… new strategic makeup splurges.

2.

Kiss and tell

I

t’s time to kiss the lipsticks in your kit goodbye that have been rendered redundant by your maturing tastes or expiry dates. There’s no need for mourning, however, as you can pucker up with pretty new colour palettes. If you don’t want to play with possibilities and prefer to find the perfect companion without much deliberation, just follow the simple skin tones rules:

3.

4.

• Fair skin tones (skin is pale or translucent with a tendency to burn very easily): suit light pink, light peach, beige and golden brown • Medium skin tones (tan easily and generally don’t burn/have sensitive skin): suit medium pink, red, orangey peach and apricot • Olive skin tones (rarely burn and look tanned even in winter): suit dark rose, dark red, berry, dark apricot • Dark skin tones (never get burnt and hair is possibly black or dark brown): suit brownish red, dark fuchsia, dark berry and golden beige.

7.

6.

Brush strokes

W

hile great makeup brushes tend to command a higher price, great quality investments perform well under pressure over long periods of time with proper maintenance and make the application process a breeze. One brush will not be able to conquer all beauty challenges so investing in a few of the fundamentals – blusher, bronzer, foundation and shadow brushes – will serve you in good stead. Natural bristles are fabulous – pony hair and goat for example - but synthetics also do the trick. Just remember these are best for applying creams and liquids.

BLAZE-R OF GLORY By Kate Pierson

When it comes to the peak of sartorial sophistication, nothing beats a blazer boasting a beautiful fit.

A

unisex essential for every wardrobe, the blazer is the unsung hero in fashion. All too easily neglected when it comes to celebrating the most versatile staples in our life, we are shining a bright spotlight on this entire enduring style icon. Believe it or not, the appellation ‘blazer’ has an interesting history – it derives from a ship, the HMS Blazer and pays homage to the garment’s initial origins. Blazer Generation One was actually worn by uniformed crew of this navy vessel who donned blue and white striped jackets. In the second half of the 1800s, the blazer was adopted and adapted by rowers in England. The style morphed into a loose-fitting jacket made from thick flannel that acted as a windbreaker. Fast forward to 2017, and we are spoilt for choice when it comes to the iterations inspiring our imagination. One of our favourites is

the ‘Boyfriend Blazer’. It inherited this moniker in light of its more masculine or androgynous shape. Cut slightly larger than a traditional blazer, the Boyfriend Blazer achieves a figure flattering form and pairs perfectly with skinny jeans or boyfriends jeans, a crisp white shirt, and velvet creepers, or similarly informal footwear. We’d hasten to add, however, that a pair of strappy stilettos can also up the glam factor with this particular ensemble. A more tailored blazer – with or without a lapel collar – channels a more corporate aesthetic, but can easily graduate to a night out, particularly if the fabric is a bit more flamboyant. We’ve pulled together some of the prettiest blazers for the coming spring and summer seasons and we’re sure these will become your ‘go to’ for the office and special occasions.

For instance, the team of eight beauty specialists treat people with delicious, earth-friendly, sustainable ‘Matrix RAW’ haircare, and ‘Edible Beauty’ products. “It’s a bonus for the time-poor to be able to come to one salon for a hair-colour, cut,

We want time here to be a client’s luxurious Zen space in their day.” Fresh, zingy fragranced beauty potions sport names like ‘Citrus Rhapsody’, ‘Desert Lime’ and ‘Exotic Goddess’ use pure, botanical ingredients. The underlying philosophy is that if you couldn’t put it in your mouth, the formulators won’t put it in their products. They’re the result of careful crafting by Australian Anna Mitsios, a naturopath and nutritionist. Because of the full service menu of affordable treatments, where a client can move from one appointment and practitioner to another and even be served lunch if required, this becomes an ideal destination for ball or wedding prep, or personal-stylist parties.

SIMPLE ELEGANCE By Kate Pierson

Abstract expressionist painter Hans Hofmann once said, “The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak”.

H

offman’s wisdom goes right to the heart of simple elegance or minimalism: a gender fluid and timeless sartorial aesthetic that endures and prevails in equal measure.

Victoria Beckham personifies this look. Classic, simple, sophisticated and focused on clean lines and texture with a less-is-more approach to embellishment, simple elegance is willingly governed by some stylish rules:

Fashion that fits like a glove: channelling a quintessential minimalist look requires formfitting garments that look like they are bespoke creations for your body. While tailored lines are synonymous with more expensive price tags, great fit is paramount.

C

2.

Declutter: while this is an action rather than an aesthetic principle, addressing what’s in your wardrobe is an important first step in the process of embracing a minimalist approach to your wears. Having a capsule collection for each season with some timeless fundamentals is ideal.

Monochrome matters: black and white is a sure-fire way to become a master of minimalism. An unbeatable combo in respect to its impact and synergy, a monochrome get-up is a match made in heaven with the minimalist style. If you’re keen to break away from the monochrome mould, then employ another dynamic duo – like black and gold, or black and millennial pink.

DON’T DIE OF EMBARRASSMENT “Many of us are cavalier about symptoms we should actually get checked out,” says Christchurch Colorectal Surgeon, Christopher Wakeman.

M

WHEN A DISEASE SUCH AS BOWEL CANCER CAN BE SO DEVASTATING, HAVING A COLONOSCOPY JUST MAKES SENSE.

en could be the worst culprits, but often people in general explain away what should be taken seriously. Six leading surgeons in all forms of bowel disease – of which there’s an unexplained high incidence in Canterbury – work at Christchurch Colorectal. Each one of them, namely John Frye, Tim Eglinton, Frank Frizelle, Richard Tapper, Prashant Sharma, along with Christopher Wakeman, stress the importance of timely screening. When a disease such as bowel cancer can be so devastating, and can often be prevented via the removal of polyps, having a colonoscopy just makes sense. Some of us should have one earlier than others, according to Mr Wakeman, but anyone who’s unsure should ask their doctor. As many as a quarter of all cases of bowel cancer fall into the familial category. That means there’s a family history of the disease; a parent, brother, sister or child with colorectal cancer or polyps discovered at an age younger than 60 years. There might be two close relatives who’ve been diagnosed with bowel cancer. It’s important to take note of how old they were when diagnosed, and seek personal bowel screening a decade earlier

than this. Colonoscopies are scheduled for every five years from then onward. If relatives who’ve had colorectal cancer are grandparents, aunts or uncles, then personal risk of the same is considered ‘average,’ the medical literature states. However, as with most disease risk, likelihood rises with increasing years, and over 50 this increases regardless of family history. A small percentage (less than 5 percent) of all colorectal cancers occur as a result of a familial genetic disorder called Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) or another inherited condition known as Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colon Cancer (HNPCC). People in these genetic categories require aggressive screening and preventive treatments, overseen by a specialist colorectal clinician. “We have some of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world here, and it’s not because of any one simple thing,” Mr Wakeman says. “It’s a mix of genetics, diet, bacteria. Also, we’re an aging population that’s getting heavier.” He says that some things in life are too important to put off, and bowel screening is one of them. If embarrassment is an issue, it shouldn’t be. “We’re looking on the inside,” he adds.

hey’re a significant part of the ceremony. It’s often the only time the couple speaks to each other (other than the “I do’s”) during the formal part of the wedding. Much of the anxiety comes from not knowing what to say to each other. Here are some tips: • • • • •

The legal part: “I take you to be my husband...” What your partner means to you How your partner makes you feel Some humour – if that’s your style Your favourite quote to wrap it all up.

Many celebrants will aid you in writing your vows, or even offer a list of suggestions to take inspiration from. Remember, your celebrant is there to guide you, so don’t be shy in asking for help. If you’re still feeling nervous about public speaking, embrace it. It’s going to be one of the best days of your life, and many of us do it only once. If you find that the “embrace” part still doesn’t help, consider this: you’re speaking directly to your mate, no one else. The constant stream of food worshipping that takes place across social media day in and day out has thrown some culinary curveballs our way.

A

s the food fanatics among us cook up all kinds of adventurous recipes, there’s been a clear trend emerging for some time – a fixation on healthier, holistic eating that promulgates vertical integration (paddock to plate); transparency with ingredients and sources;

whole foods, and a general digression away from the hedonistic food patterns that dogged previous generations with addictions to fast food. Three of the protagonists on the health food scene that have caught our attention are enjoying spectacular attention across the globe:

Cauliflower:

1.

While it certainly wouldn’t win any vegetable beauty pageants, cauliflower is definitely leading in the popularity stakes. Incredibly versatile, it makes for a mouthwatering mash or rice and is the perfect crunchy snack on the go. Steam, blend or bake it – it’ll rise to every occasion.

Matcha Tea: Watermelon water:

2.

We’ve seen the arrival of a new thirstquencher that has finally knocked coconut water off its pedestal – watermelon water. Harbouring natural electrolyte minerals and lycopene – a powerful plant-derived antioxidant, it is also very high in potassium, which can work wonders on our blood pressure keeping this in tip-top shape.

3.

A finely ground powder that originates from special green tea leaves, this Japanese export is high in anti-oxidants and fibre. Promoting a healthy heart and weight, it is also celebrated for its brain boosting benefits.

Google is infinitely generous when it comes to tips and recipes that involve all of the above. Food for thought!

WHAT’S COOKING? Kitchen trends in 2017 By Amy Wilkinson

The kitchen has an enduring status as the ‘heart of the home’, and as the most valuable part of your house, it deserves a little upgrade every now and then. If you are thinking of re-vamping your kitchen, take a look at these trends to inspire your creative flair.

Natural finishes

1.

Nature is slowly making its way into our homes with accents in natural wood finishes and hanging greenery walls. Wood, stone and textured aesthetics are making their mark being built into cabinetry and used as finishes for benchtops and furniture. This makes a great addition to any kitchen by enhancing the natural feel and taking away from a modernist and synthetic feel kitchen. On the other hand, walls of herb greenery in kitchens are making a comeback, as people want everything they need on hand.

Technology

2.

The modern home is getting a new look with the increasing use of technology making a statement in many refurbished kitchens. Bluetooth functionality to control speakers, lights and appliances is making a scene in modern kitchens – i.e. controlling the jug from your bed with your phone, to having a coffee ready when you get up.

A

Monochrome tones

B

3.

Even though white cabinetry and bench tops still reign supreme in the world of kitchens for 2017, more people are moving to monochrome colours to accentuate certain parts of their kitchen. The classic black and white kitchen remains popular this year to create a timeless and minimalistic look. Silver appliances can also be a great way to bring this trend into your kitchen.

C

Industrial look

4.

Following on from the addition of monochrome colours, is the idea of an industrial look for your kitchen. Exposed pipe and brick, brushed metal finishes, and copper are standouts. Even though this has been popular for a while now, the industrial aesthetic is becoming prominent in those wanting to add a rough finish to their space to highlight form and function. The use of copper can also be a small but compelling addition to the space. From cabinet handles, to accessories, copper works well with the industrial look, and complements any neutral palate kitchen.

FESTIVE SEASON IN STYLE

Forget Christmas in the park, it’s Christmas at The Villas this year for 2017. You may think it’s a little early to be bringing St Nick into the mix, but it pays to book early to guarantee that you get the best spot to celebrate the festive season.

T DARK JULEP Non Solo Pizza and Sanpellegrino have let us in on a little secret. Ready to prepare at home, whether it be a wind down on a Friday, or a cocktail night with your nearest and dearest, this recipe will take you straight down to the vibrant Italia!

INGREDIENTS 45ml Jägermeister 15ml lemon juice 15ml simple syrup Mint Sanpellegrino Pompelmo

METHOD Put the mint leaves on one hand and clap. This bruises the leaves and releases the aroma. Rub the mint leaves around the rim of the julep mug and drop them in. Add fresh lemon juice and the simple syrup. Do not strain the mixture. Fill the mug almost to the top with ice. Pour the Jägermeister over the ice, and fill the mug with Sanpellegrino Pompelmo. Mix, taste, and add more sugar if desired. Top up with crushed ice and garnish it with a lemon twist, brown sugar and a sprig of mint.

here is no time like the present to organise your Christmas celebration and The Villas offers the perfect inner city destination to host your work or social function. New set menu options have just been released, specially designed for 10 to 60 guests, and will be available for group booking from 13 November. Menus feature some delicious options that are sure to please any group wanting to dine at lunchtime or for evening bookings. Just head to www.thevillas.co.nz and take a look at the 3 course Christmas set menu, priced very reasonably at $70pp. Options are always available from the a la carte menu and any special dietary requirements can be accommodated upon request. For those looking to host a more informal gathering through to those hosting a group of clients, the food options include selections of canapes and snacks made on site, or tailored set menus can be arranged for a more formal event. A FEAST OF SUCCESS New Zealand has never shied away from a culinary challenge. Here’s the lowdown on how some of our most inspiring chefs and initiatives are shaping up in 2017.

World Champions of Wine Tasting For the first time, New Zealand is sending a team of talented wine aficionados to the World Champions of Wine Tasting. The fifth annual championship will be held in Nuit-St-Georges, France on 13 and 14 October. The New Zealand team will be led by Cashias Gumbo, Sommelier of the George Hotel in Christchurch. NZ Hospitality Championships All his army training clearly helped upcoming chef Nicholas Todd emerge victorious as the winner of the prestigious ServiceIQ Champion Apprentice Chef 2017 Competition, held at the NZ Hospitality Championships in Auckland last month. The battle didn’t go according to plan for the young Apprentice Chef

and member of the New Zealand Defence Force from Burnham Camp in Christchurch. When he arrived at the competition kitchen in Auckland, he discovered he’d left his prize venison back in the fridge at base. Luckily, the Auckland Food Show was in full swing next door and he could switch out his menu with a fresh lamb rump as a replacement at the last minute. No pressure. After a ninety-minute cook-off against seven other apprentice chefs, he plated his triumphant main dish. Next year, the young soldier will travel to Australia to spend a week at the world-famous Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, worth around $3,000. He’ll also become a member of the NZ Chefs’ Association.

The Food Collective New Zealanders throw away 122,547 tonnes of food a year and The Food Collective is rising to this challenge. A food service industry initiative supported by Unilever Food Solutions, with food rescue services KiwiHarvest and Kaibosh, Unilever has committed to helping KiwiHarvest and Kaibosh provide more than 60,000 meals to communities between now and December 2017. Supermarket chefs and foodservice professionals are encouraged to join the Food Collective by donating surplus food, minimising food waste to landfill, and understanding how food waste can be better managed in their kitchen. For each case of Unilever Food Solutions purchased, 50 cents will be donated to KiwiHarvest and Kaibosh.

KIWI CUISINE

WITH A EUROPEAN ACCENT

Described as modern Kiwi cuisine with a European influence, The Little Bistro offers a unique, intimate dining experience.

N

estled in the heart of Akaroa, the talented chefs create each dish on the ever-evolving menu, which changes almost daily, based on the fresh produce they source from local growers on any given day. “We work with local suppliers and growers, so the majority of the produce we use is from Banks Peninsula,” says owner, Richard Uttley. Well-known in the industry and with over twenty years of hospitality experience, Richard took over the business with his wife two and a half years ago. One of the bistro’s regular suppliers also grows a variety of vegetable that the first settlers in Akaroa grew, the Akaroa Long Red Heritage Carrot, a tasty addition to a range of dishes on the menu. The award-winning bistro seats just 26 people, creating a cute, cosy atmosphere. Being a small restaurant, it provides more ease and flexibility to be able to change a menu so frequently – much to the surprise and delight of regular customers. “While we don’t really stick to any particular style, our dishes are based on what’s fresh, and what’s in season,” Richard says. “It’s a truly local-inspired restaurant.” The restaurant is also working towards an exclusively Canterbury wine list. Follow The Little Bistro on Facebook or visit www.thelittlebistro.co.nz to book online. Gift vouchers are also available.

A twist on the traditional ‘Moscow Mule’ which calls for vodka, lime, and ginger beer, this variation uses Organic Fair Trade Gingerella, fresh mandarin, peach schnapps, and lemon to create a refreshing and delicious tall drink. 30mls Peach schnapps 30mls Vodka 20mls Lemon Juice 30mls Fresh pressed Mandarin juice 15mls Honey Add all ingredients to glass and stir, fill with ice, and top with Gingerella. The Monday Room’s version is garnished with homemade mandarin sherbet, which is easy enough to make, using equal parts crushed mandarin dehydrate, and caster sugar. Simply use a wedge of mandarin to coat the edge of the glass with mandarin juice, and then dip the edge in the sherbet.

Milieu is well situated in Wrights Road in the heart of busy Addington. Open seven days, it serves the industrial and office complex areas, and on weekends it is a wonderful, casual meeting place.

s more and more embrace the high life – apartment living – interior design is moving with the times and will need to continue to adapt given the predicted trends. In April 2017, the biannual Colliers International Auckland Residential Development Report found the highest number of apartment completions in more than a decade is expected this year. Other urban areas are following suit. While usually synonymous with more compact spaces, apartment living doesn’t need to command much compromise when it comes to functional, inspiring living though; it just requires ‘equalizers’. What do we mean by this? Clever, considered furnishings to maximise the use of space. The expressions ‘nook and cranny’ and ‘space efficiency’ come to mind – think spaces under stairs, floating shelves, multi-functional furniture and even the length of a wall. All of these options can give potential ‘dead zones’ a new lease of life. Unused alcoves, the spaces behind doors and spaces above cabinets can also be a décor blessing in disguise. As French artist Henri Matisse once said, “Creative people are curious, flexible, persistent and independent with a tremendous spirit of adventure and a love of play”. Healthier,

HAPPIER HOMES Thermaseal specialises in double-glazing for homes. Instead of replacing entire single-glazed windows and frames - which can be very expensive – retrofitting involves using small modifications to fit double-glazing to existing window frames.

T

he benefits of retrofitting double-glazing in homes are many. Greater temperature control means a warmer home in winter, and a cooler home in summer, which inevitably leads to reduced energy costs and a lower power bill! In addition, double-glazed windows reduce outside noise, and increase security. Drafts inside are reduced or eliminated, as is condensation, which means a dryer, healthier home. Furniture is protected as the effects of UV light are reduced, which is a longterm money saver. Double-glazing also adds value to a home. Thermaseal was formed in 1991. For nearly thirty years it has grown to meet increased demands, and provided excellent customer service

dick k

to Christchurch homeowners. It recently moved to a large, purposebuilt, modern factory in the Waterloo Business Park, where it manufactures the double-glazing that Thermaseal’s experienced staff members install. Dealing directly with the manufacturer saves time and money, and all the products and work are covered by a ten year Thermaseal warranty. On these cold, winter days, the benefits of double-glazing are obvious. Thermaseal’s trained consultants will help clients make the best decisions for their home. The team is a specialist in double-glazing, but prefers to call itself a specialist in warmer winters, cooler summers, quieter nights, and dryer, healthier homes! A STROKE OF

Julius Caesar probably said it first: “Experience is the teacher of all things.” Nothing is truer in many of today’s trade industries, and in the Christchurch painting and decorating scene, few, if any, have more experience than Joe Butler of J Butler & Co.

J

oe started painting in 1961, when you had to mix the paint ingredients by hand, and has worked in some grand English mansions. Leaving painting to join the Royal Marines for several years, travelling to Australia where he continued to expand his painting knowledge, he met a Christchurch girl and has now been married to her for more than 42 years. Joe is a past President of Master Painters and has been involved in many industry bodies. This vast bank of knowledge and experience he brings to every job J Butler & Co takes on. Director Andrew Webb has worked at J Butler & Co for six years. A qualified painter, he too brings a wealth of experience to every project. Together, he and six staff, all qualified

tradespeople or apprentices, have completed jobs as far afield as Hanmer, Akaroa, Queenstown and the Bay of Islands. Joe and Andrew pride themselves on the company’s dedication to its clients. “We have customer interests at heart. Customer service is so important to me,” Joe says. In an environment where values such as punctuality, loyalty, and integrity often seem to be just buzz words, one thing fifty years in the industry has taught Joe, is that these must remain steadfastly at the heart of his business. And they do. Whether it’s a small residential, or a large commercial paint job, a new build or an older home, hanging $3000 per roll wallpaper, rag rolling or marbling, J Butler & Co brings decades of experience to the project. With a diploma in colour consultancy, advice on colours, or small maintenance jobs, Joe and Andrew can do it. They also have an experienced pool of qualified contractors to call on. A great rug is likely to set you back a pretty penny and you want your investment to go the distance.

LINEN HOUSE

Important pre-purchase considerations go well beyond the aesthetic and into the practicality zone – think carefully about the function of the room the rug is destined for, the foot-traffic, and the size of your space and its existing furnishings. The perfect solution for complementing or contrasting your dÊcor, rugs have the ability to tie together or divide your spaces, so also think about the overall design picture of your abode.

ur first recommendation is to get touchy-feely with your potential purchases. Researching should ideally be a tactile process because every option is unique; the technique and materials used will influence how the rug looks, feels and behaves. Buying from the digital realm will only give you a one-dimensional appreciation of these things. Density and fibre are key to durability – the denser the pile, the hardier your rug will be.

TRUST

You build trust drop by drop; your actions determine your trustworthiness, your character, your integrity. Trust is paramount to any real estate business relationship and I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. The trust of people who employ us to market and sell their homes. The trust that’s required in the negotiation process and the trust that comes with having to know private, sometimes compromising and confidential, facts. It’s so easily reduced, by carelessness or self-service. Giving too much information in one place and without an owner’s authority, i.e. when the

There is a fiduciary duty, which, in legal terms, is the highest standard of care and this is represented in the REAA guide known as the New Zealand Residential Property Sale and Purchase Agreement Guide. There is also a Duty of Care. This is a legal obligation requiring adherence to a standard of reasonable care. Both sellers and buyers have representation within these frameworks. But, as is always the case, trust has to cut both ways.

Consultants are often vulnerable to the trustworthiness of the information they are given, relying on the owners and reports by third-party specialists. Some information may be difficult to validate, e.g. work carried out behind walls (you can’t see, so you must trust) and alterations completed without the council requirements being met. Again, these examples are happening in real-life and realtors can occupy a precarious spot. So, what’s the answer? I’d say it is utmost care from a moral as well as a legal perspective. Time taken to ensure facts are facts and open communication between the parties at all times, because when it goes wrong, there are no winners.

Integrity often sits beside it and has an equally significant meaning, and both of these weighty considerations lose their true meaning when they are bandied about like an insincere compliment. I find the selfdeclaration by professionals that they are trustworthy and have integrity as a potential minefield. You either have it or you don’t. My lawyer, accountant, doctor and banker all have tremendous integrity and I trust them implicitly. None of them have brochures proclaiming these qualities; they simply don’t feel they have to qualify their trustworthiness by claiming that they have it. In fact, if any of them did I might find that untrustworthy!

reason for sale is a matrimonial split, or too little in another, such as when a view is going to be comprised by a new build next-door or the property has had a tragedy occur in it. These examples aren’t metaphorical and nor are they singular to any one consultant, company or part of the country. They have happened and possibly still do, and the consequences for either the indiscretion or omission are substantial.

HA

Trust. It’s a short word with a big meaning, in fact it’s defined as ‘a firm belief in the reliability, truth or ability of someone or something’.

When you speak with Lynette McFadden, one of the franchise owners of Harcourts Gold, you get a real sense of this drive and determination. But Lynette is more than one of the driving forces behind Harcourts Gold. Now that she has been a business owner for over 20 years and has a wealth of awards and experience in the real estate industry, Lynette has a different focus. “At this stage of my life it’s important for me to distil all the knowledge I have gained and use it to coach, mentor and inspire my own team, as well as other realtors all around New Zealand. Because of this, I’m approached by business owners around the country and have started to deliver presentations based on industry excellence.” Lynette’s coaching is underpinned by a strong personal discipline and a legendary work ethic - her

Harcourts Gold has always helped community organisations - the Salvation Army, Women’s Refuge, Kids Can and an orphanage in Fiji amongst numerous other causes. We all have so much; it’s time to help others with far less.” There are other passions in Lynette’s life – her husband John, her sons Harry and Louis, her interest in interior design and her love of art. “Everything I have done over the years has led me to where I am today – fulfilled and content, but there will always be new goals to strive for.”

A

s we track down to the General Election on September 23, the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce has joined with other chambers across New Zealand in doing work on what businesses might expect from an incoming Government. Although the economy is in good shape and the prognosis for Canterbury is looking very good from a business perspective, there is a lot we can still do better. Central Government will be pivotal in assisting us to do just that. One of the areas we think needs more work is the need for Central and Local Government to work better together. The interface between the two is often messy and unclear and both Central and Local Government tend to blame each other for the bits that fall down the middle. There needs to be new ways established to drive two-way conversations between Central Government and Local Government. We believe Central Government needs to review where Local Government sits within the Central Government machine and we need to ensure that Local Government is adequately funded to deliver on roles delegated by Central Government. This will require some work on how Local Government is funded into the future, as the current funding mechanisms will not be appropriate as responsibilities and roles continue to change. We also need to ensure Local Government is held to account for its collective action, its role in the community and its spending against agreed baselines. If specific work is done on this area by whoever establishes the next Government, it has the potential to markedly improve Government outcomes at a national and local level for us all.

W

hat a wet and wild month we’ve seen. One which has really tested patience of many landlords and occupiers across the region. Amongst all the winter blues, there’s also been some great news to crow about on the foreign investment front with the first sale of a commercial building to an offshore investor since the 2011 earthquake. The purchase of the newly-built PwC Building at 60 Cashel Street by Grand Central (NZ) Ltd, the New Zealand subsidiary of a Singaporeanowned property investor, is a very significant signal of the strong international interest in Christchurch commercial property. Having led the sales process for CBRE it was very encouraging to see first-hand too, that two out of the top four bidders were from offshore, and the building was paraded amongst a host of other building stock in major cities across Australia, the United States and Asia. The particularly strong interest out of Asia sends the positive signal that we are a robust, viable investment location and we have building stock of the quality and scale to compete on the international stage. Notwithstanding the successful outcome on PWC, the sales campaign showcased Christchurch to numerous offshore parties and there was genuine acknowledgement of the unexpected quality of the rebuild which has generated pent up demand for investment opportunities. Both domestic and offshore private capital is critical to how we fund the future regeneration of the CBD. This latest purchase is a further vote of confidence in the CBD and an important signal to the market about the viability of constructing quality building stock.

f anyone has any doubts about the future of Christchurch, they just need to look at the number of people wanting to invest in commercial property here. Now that the city is taking shape and people can see the tangible signs of recovery, there’s no shortage of money looking for a home. For instance, we’re fielding more and more enquiry about our commercial auctions. By the end of July this year, we had called 26 auctions and sold 23 of them as a result of the process. That equates to $51 million thus far by auction alone. The interest is across the board. There are the chunkier properties, such as the strategic vacant corner site at 9 Cathedral Square, once home to the old United Service Hotel. It sold for $6.650 million to national tourist retailer Aotea New Zealand. Then there are the smaller deals like two very tidy industrial units in Sydenham which recently fetched $1.130 million, and a retail strip in Kaiapoi that went for $1.6 million. We’ve been saying for some time that interest in the Christchurch market isn’t just coming from local buyers, but national and international investors. In just one week, we negotiated the sale of three substantial properties totalling $49 million – one was sold to a Singaporean-based investor, and the other two to buyers in Auckland and Wellington. This confidence augurs well for the future of Christchurch.

t has been one of this Government’s priorities to ensure young New Zealanders get an education that will see them succeed in a global economy. The Government’s $1.1 billion Christchurch School Rebuild programme will ensure Canterbury’s young people have the best facilities to learn in. We’ve made significant progress with 12 school rebuilds or new schools already completed. By 2022, 115 school rebuilds and redevelopments will be completed. Last month, we announced Halswell West Primary School primary school will now open in 2019 – three years sooner than planned. We opened a number of schools this year, including Rolleston College, Lemonwood Grove School, and Haeata Community Campus. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many people from the communities benefitting from these schools and seen a real pride in what has been achieved. Roading is another critical element of the rebuild. We’re investing $952 million into the Christchurch Northern Arterial, the Western Corridor, State Highway 1 Russley Road upgrade, and Southern Motorways – all vital in improving travel times, and to support growth, development and tourism. The Memorial Arches are now in place above Memorial Avenue. This signals the Russley Road upgrade is nearing completion and we expect it to open to traffic next year. In the almost six-year project to fix quakedamaged roads, more than 1.3m square metres of roading have been repaired and replaced in Canterbury. While there is still more to do, the project is nearing completion. Schools and roads are just two examples of what this community is achieving in its rebuild, together with this National-led Government. Let’s keep the momentum going.

L

abour has always been a champion of quality free public education. The First Labour government introduced free universal provision of secondary schooling up to the age of 15, and the Fifth Labour Government brought in the entitlement to free early childhood education. We have long believed in the power of education to change lives and that is it is one of the most vital investments that a government can make. The days when someone could walk out of a classroom and into a job for life have gone. Work as we know it is constantly evolving and our education system must adapt with it. We need to make sure we’re preparing Kiwi kids for the best start possible when they stroll out of the school gates for the last time. That’s why Labour is going to invest an extra $4 billion over four years to deliver a modern education system. There will be more teachers, better professional development and extra learning resources. It’s critical that we help the sector meeting the rising costs they need without placing burden on families and to do this, each state and state integrated school that doesn’t ask parents for donations will receive an extra $150 per student. Labour will ensure that education that is genuinely free, not one that that sees parents pick up the bill. A Labour government in September will prioritise education like those before. It is our job to make that the children of today are ready to take on tomorrow.

T

ourism has overtaken dairy as New Zealand’s top export earner. International visitor arrivals increased by more than 10 per cent to reach 3.3 million in the year to March 2016. Our spectacular landscapes – much of it managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) – are major drawcards for visitors. The future health of tourism relies on our ‘clean green’ image. People won’t come to see dirty rivers, mountains obscured by smog or walk in silent forests with no birdsong, because of the impact of pests. Yet that is a real risk when 62 per cent of monitored river swimming sites are unsafe for swimming and 3,000 native species are facing extinction. We need DOC to be well resourced to protect our unique native plants, wildlife and the places we love, both for their own sake and because our economy depends on a healthy environment. National has cut millions from DOC’s baseline funding, forcing the department to restructure, close field bases and cut more than 200 staff. DOC has only been able to afford to control pests on 16 per cent of the area where it is needed. The Green Party would progressively increase DOC’s baseline funding by $192 million by 2023, enabling DOC to employ another 720 staff and double pest control. We think tourists want to help protect the places they come to enjoy. A new $20 tourism levy would raise $65 million annually, helping increase the funding available for conservation nationally. The Greens want New Zealand’s natural treasures — our wildlife, forests, rivers, and oceans to be safe. This benefits all of us.

If there could have been a more unlikely background for the man who would guide Christchurch through one of the largest natural disasters in New Zealand’s history, zoological studies and a broadcasting career would probably be it.

Y

et Sir Bob Parker did just this and, although his term as Mayor of Christchurch ended in 2013, he continues to play an important role in the city’s rebuild efforts. Canterbury Build talks to Sir Bob Parker about his love of Christchurch and what he’s up to at the historic Cranmer Court site.

Q&A:

SIR BOB PARKER’S

How are you enjoying your involvement with NewUrban Group? Creating and delivering new developments as part of the rebuild of Christchurch is an exciting role. We are currently working in the higher-end of the residential spectrum with some of our city’s most exceptional architects. Seeing great vision being delivered in outstanding high quality architectural forms is very rewarding.

CONTINUING ROLE IN CITY’S REBUILD

Why was the Cranmer Courts site selected for development? This site has had a rich residential history since the original neo-gothic Christchurch Normal School was converted into apartments in the

1980s. Previous residents spoke very highly of the Cranmer Court site and its proximity to the city. Neighbouring residents also agreed that a highquality development such as Cranmer Gardens would enhance the values of their buildings and help breathe new life into the area. With the development of Victoria Street and future projects that are still to come, the location will continue being a highly desirable place to live. Other features of the 39-luxury apartment complex include its location, adjacent to Hagley Park and nearby Botanic Gardens. Each of these community assets add another reason why our location is, in my view, the best residential land in the inner city. The NewUrban team felt the site deserved a building that acknowledged our city’s history, but in a contemporary way. We achieved this by staying true to the building’s original footprint and pledging to use 50 truckloads of the Halswell stone, saved from the demolished buildings, to construct the complex’s outer walls. Seven of the original 1980’s townhouses and two free-standing villas will also be restored and retained.

NewUrban Group’s Sir Bob Parker and Bert Govan overlook a replica of the Cranmer Gardens development.

How does this development reflect your vision for the central city? I love urban life and central Christchurch is re-emerging as a well-connected and liveable city. In my view, we are adding to this way of life with a new residential development that is so much more than just another faceless high-rise box. Residential developments with strong architectural forms in close proximity to community “treasures” like art galleries, museums and entertainment is what I like. Cranmer Gardens supports this vision of our city in a very tangible way.

What are some of the company’s future ambitions? To grow and be recognised as the creator of high quality, well-designed residential and commercial assets in Christchurch and throughout this beautiful island in which we have the good fortune to live. What do you love the most about Christchurch? Location – Christchurch is centrally placed in the most beautiful place on earth: the South Island of New Zealand.

ARCHAEOLOGY

EARTHQUAKES REVEAL LOST HISTORY While it is true silver linings are few and far between when it comes to devastation at the level of what we have seen locally, the discovery of physical remnants of the city’s past would certainly count as such.

M

ore than 100,000 artefacts have been dug up around Christchurch since the 2011 earthquakes and founder of local company Underground Overground Archaeology, Archaeologist Katharine Watson says the finds are significant.

“In a city that’s lost so much of its public heritage, we’re incredibly lucky to have this resource,” she says. “There’s recognition overseas of the significance of this collection, which is notable for its size and completeness.” Finds from early European settlement

include ceramics, bottles, mustard jars, old wells, animal bones and brick structures, such as a largely intact factory floor from a 1900’s foundry on the site of the new Justice and Emergency Precinct. An example of a fire tank – a 38m long structure made out of brick and concrete that was used to store water for the fire service in the 19th century – was found under the site earmarked for the new Convention Centre. Earth ovens used by local Maori were exposed on the side of a trench in Redcliffs and stone tools, midden (a rubbish heap of shellfish, charcoal and bird bones) dating back to Waitaha or Ngati Mamoe (pre-Ngai Tahu) settlements were found in Moncks Cave in Redcliffs. “The artefacts we’ve got are pretty important because they tell us stories,” Watson says. “What we have here is too important not to save and preserve for the future.”

THINKING INSIDE THE SQUARE PLANS TO BRING LIFE TO THE CATHEDRAL SQUARE

The Christ Church Cathedral is one of the city’s most contentious earthquake casualties, caught in a development stalemate with decisions still to be made over its future.

M

eanwhile, dramatic changes reshaping the eponymous Cathedral Square, to attract people and events, have been unveiled for public consultation. Green spaces with trees and water features, temporary buildings to attract the arts and creative activities, areas for public events and spaces for young people are key aspects of the draft plan. Charged with developing a regeneration strategy by the end

of this year, joint city council and Crown rebuild authority Regenerate Christchurch has created a draft concept for the area to test some key moves to help stimulate investment, achieve the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan’s vision and showcase the very best of our city. “Cities are often defined by the quality of their centre and what it offers,” says Regenerate Christchurch Chief Executive Ivan Iafeta.

“We want to catalyse improvements to the area. We aren’t working with a blank canvas. This draft concept is based on the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan and on what people have said through Share an Idea, as well as more recent research and community feedback calling for a greener and more lively space that can host events.” See what’s proposed and give your feedback, at engage. regeneratechristchurch.nz by August 21.

‘RE-BERTH’ OF A HARBOURSIDE LYTTELTON TO GET WALK-ON FLOATING MARINA A port town with a long history, Lyttelton’s pre-quake identity was tied almost inextricably to its physical incarnation. A working port and trade hub for the South Island, it has invited an eclectic mix of industry, creativity and history, with striking historic buildings giving the hillside community a unique character.

up Lyttelton’s harbourside and make the waterfront accessible for the public. Built at the site of the Inner Harbour pile moorings in Lyttelton Harbour, it will be Canterbury’s only walk-on floating marina for yachts and powerboats, and will provide a waterfront promenade linking the marina to Lyttelton’s town centre. But the rejuvenation project extends much further than that. As well as an upgraded marina and promenade, Te Ana will encompass eateries, shops and workplaces – all befitting the colourful

“A development like Te Ana Marina can only be a good thing for Lyttelton and the wider region, giving the township a further sense of pride,” says Vicki, who has lived in Lyttelton for the past 15 years. Her husband, Robert Paton, was born there. “We have already seen a steady increase in property values as Lyttelton continues its rebuild efforts, and Te Ana will only add to this momentum. From a resident’s perspective, the main drawcard for me is the fact that the area will be useable and functional for everybody – not just the Port. Being able to touch the water again will be a novelty in itself.” LPC Chief Executive Peter Davie says the results further highlight the positive impact this long-awaited development will have on the region. “Christchurch will finally have what all other major New Zealand cities have and that is a fully serviced, walk-on marina.” The first boats are expected to be at the new moorings before the end of this year and 170 berths completed by April 2018.

character of the township. Lyttelton resident Robyn Robinson, whose property overlooks the marina, is excited about the marina and what it means for the local community. “The new waterfront promenade will be a great asset, providing an essential link between the town centre and the marina. It makes my heart sing to think about what this area will soon look like and represent, particularly as it has been underdeveloped for so long.” The marina development is also good news for the area’s property values. Lyttelton Port of Christchurch (LPC) commissioned independent valuation company, Telfer Young, to estimate the impact of the marina on property values. The report concluded that, “the positive attributes of the development will flow through to the desirability of the properties overlooking the development, and to a lesser degree to those within walking distance”. Commenting on the findings, local resident and real estate agent Vicki Tahau Paton says Te Ana will positively contribute to Lyttelton’s growing identity as a thriving port town.

TriEx instructors will come to a site and bring to life the specific first aid situations that could be faced. Their reality-based option will utilise actors who are often very realistically made up with injuries. TriEx believes the added realism and urgency that being on an actual site with injured actors brings, increases the effectiveness of the training as well as recall. Training in Psychological First Aid will be available soon. This will help workers recognise when a colleague might be having psychological difficulties and how best to assist them until professional help can be found. TriEx is very excited to be growing first aid training both in staffing and in the products they offer.

FASHIONABLE FORECAST International labels confirmed for retail precinct

New tenancies are securing the eastern end of the city’s retail precinct a reputation amongst the fashionably elite for being a hub for a very stylish selection.

fter an absence of more than six years, international retailer Country Road will open a new South Island flagship store in the $140 million Crossing development between Colombo and High streets, which is heading towards a spring completion. Carrying its women’s, men’s and children’s fashion lines, as well as homewares, it will be the biggest Country Road in the South Island. The store will front directly onto Cashel Street, where it will be joined by sister fashion brands Trenery and Witchery, which have also signed up as tenants in the central city retail development. The inner-city space already boasts big names on its tenancy list, including British fashion label Topshop and Swedish brand H&M which will open progressively from early September. In the neighbouring ANZ Centre, fashion stores including Superette, Glassons, Hallensteins and Storm have been trading for several months, while the nearby BNZ Centre and Grand Central complexes also boast a number of fashion boutiques. Owner of the 1.7 hectare Crossing development, Philip Carter says he is pleased to welcome Country Road back to the central city. “An exceptional mix of tenants are joining our other international retailers. This is a real confidence boost to the redevelopment of our central city.”

THIRD LITTLE PIG

PRESSING ‘FAST FORWARD’ ON By Rhonda Mitchell

HOUSING EFFICIENCY In Canterbury, crusaders don’t just come in the red and black variety. Simon Wansbrough and Debbie Felder are co-owners of home building company Third Little Pig and it would be hard to overstate how zealous they are about their mission to build energy efficient houses.

plumber are critical as they need to work around the airtightness systems. Dale from Mackay Electrical and Lindsay from Lindsay’s Plumbing and Gas work closely with Simon to ensure success with these systems. New partners are quickly converted to energy efficiency principles, and like to be present for testing (such as the “Blower Door Test”) to see how well they have done. Stuart Manning Architects played an integral role in the success of this build, becoming involved early in the planning phase. “The systems we use are generally easy to install, but consideration needs to be given to them right at the start of the design process,” Simon says. Product suppliers are an essential part of this mix. NK Windows, Fantech, Proclima and Magroc (Insulated Floor Panels), Plumbing World and Greenwood Trade Professionals have been chosen because they are passionate about building better houses too. Third Little Pig is tracking the energy usage and warmth of their recent project in Young Street. The house stays warm and cosy, requiring only one hour of heatpump in the morning and two in the evening in midwinter. Shorts, tee shirts and bare feet are common inside attire, yet the heating is barely in use. A house built by Third Little Pig removes all the huffing and puffing from southerly storms!

hird Little Pig is pressing ‘fast forward’ on energy efficiency in house building, bringing it up 20 years, abreast with European standards. Simon’s vision is “people living in warm, healthy homes with no condensation, and minimised heating needs”. While the term energy efficiency is currently à la mode in house building, this often means adding a bit more insulation. Third Little Pig knows there is so much more to it than that. Simon says there is no one element that is going to make a house energy efficient. In fact, choosing to include one factor can lead to problems. Many modern homes have moisture issues due to a one-faceted approach to energy efficiency. Airtightness, insulation and heat-recovery ventilation all need to be considered for the system to work. Simon says the challenge is to educate homeowners about putting money into getting the shell right. “We are asking people to spend money on invisibles, but which will vastly improve the performance of their house; you only get one chance to get it right.” Third Little Pig works with a great team of subcontractors who are all committed to the vision of building the most energy efficient house they can. FROM WOOL STORE TO LAW AN AWARD-WINNING COMMERCIAL FIT-OUT

hey brought home the Interior Architecture Award for the commercial fit-out of an entire floor of a building that started life as a wool store, within the Granary Building in Dunedin’s historic Warehouse Precinct. The NZIA says the project - executed by Stevenson Williams Builders - has been completed “with imagination and flair”. The client, Dunedin law firm Galloway Cook Allen (GCA), requested a design that would support a paradigm shift for them; a high-tech space that is airy and light and split 50/50 between open plan and offices. McAuliffe Stevens employed an architectural theory that follows on from the building’s original use, where the new aesthetic is one of softer timbers and patenated exposed brick. The entire layout follows a horizontal campus style, broken into two distinct hubs, separated by a threestory atrium and connected by a bridge. The southern hub is dominated by the activity of greeting, meeting and play, while the entire northern hub is for working, with active breakout spaces for rest and research. With offices in both Dunedin and Queenstown, McAuliffe Stevens Architects provides a full range of architectural services, including concept design, contract and construction documentation, contract administration and relevant project management. The company’s portfolio of work includes commercial, institutional and hospitality projects plus private houses and multi-unit residential projects.

LEIGHS CONSTRUCTION - CHINESE ABUNDANT LIFE CHURCH

ARCHITECTURAL GRANDEUR NEW HOME FOR CHINESE ABUNDANT LIFE CHURCH

The Chinese Abundant Life Church now has a home for life. Wigram Skies’ magnificent new worship centre was built for a growing community’s needs – to be cherished by succeeding generations. By Tracey Edwardes

A

s you gaze up at the foyer’s 8-metre high floating ceiling with LED strip lighting and look down to the American oak vinyl planking underfoot,

there’s sense of both majesty and peace. Designed by Rob Bosma of Three Sixty Architecture, it could be a modern-day expression of cathedral grandeur.

Leighs Construction, the main contractor, was chosen for having the best overall qualities, says the church’s deacon, Sean Zhao. Work commenced in August 2016 and is now complete. Site Manager Martin Collins fittingly describes the substantial project culminating in 1500sqm as “an enlightening experience” – the client relationship especially rewarding. Random-width shiplap cedar and exterior louvres at its entrance blends with Wigram’s retail centre. The two-story concrete structure houses meeting spaces, a library, parents’ room, and other flexible community spaces. Its impressive auditorium, with 360 locallymade chairs, has Decortec acoustic wall panels, creating incredible sound dynamics. The adjacent kitchen dual entries service the foyer and alternative meeting rooms. “Anyone is welcome to Sunday worship services from 10am-12pm and children to our Sunday School,” says Pastor Elijah Wong, who founded the independent church and non-profit charity in 2003. “A dedication ceremony will also be held on 30 September.” His home, across the carpark of the 4000sqm parcel of land, is built to the same design. He says once the commanding cross made of cedar and aluminium was finally positioned on the building’s frontage, it felt complete. “Now, it’s a church!” Visit www.leighsconstruction.co.nz.

arren Reedy, Lead Designer for the project from Lewis and Barrow, says it’s great to see his plans become reality. Warren saw this project through from idea to fruition over several years, doing the conceptual and working drawings and maintaining responsibility for the architectural and structural specifications. With an owner determined to provide a building that is so much more than a carpark, the design features are arresting, with extensive vertical louvres tapering up to the corner piece. The building is visually striking at night, and vitally, easy to locate. The site is used to absolute maximum with the building providing for car washing and grooming bays for each company, as well as a fuel bowser, and it is ‘future-proofed’ with provision for car charging facilities. With the five companies in operation, this site is a busy place. The ground required remediation plus removal of contaminated soils, but the new building is built on a strong raft foundation, designed to remain stable and level under the effects of liquifying soil. Opening for its first day of trading on First of August, the weather reflected this project’s sunny prospects.

Proud to be associated with the International Rental Car Precinct project and using our expertise on this challenging site to ensure a great result.

and stone that are suited to the climate and character of Central Otago. This architecture has been particularly well received at Millbrook. The Wanaka Fire Station - built by Breen Builders - has also been crafted in a softmodern style, reflecting the character of the lake and the alpine setting of Wanaka. The elegant design saw it unanimously selected from four other architecture firms in an architectural competition.

FIRE STATION’S NEW

FUNCTIONAL FORM

Mason and Wales Architects is delighted to have received an award in the commercial category of the NZIA Southern Region Architecture Awards for its design of the new Wanaka Fire Station.

A

t 150 years old, Mason and Wales is the oldest architecture firm still practicing in New Zealand and very possibly the Southern Hemisphere. Based in Dunedin, the firm carries out work throughout the country.

Francis Whitaker, Architect Director, says residential work in Central Otago has featured strongly in recent times. The firm’s architecture features traditional alpine, country and soft-modern styles, which utilise the natural materials of wood

The elegant form is also highly functional. At the far end, the roof is high, in order to house the tall firefighting appliances. The roof slopes gently down the full length of the building and over the staff and meeting rooms, to provide a warm and enclosing space that has a human scale. This room also features a lovely stone fireplace. The layout efficiently segregates the arriving firefighters from the outgoing fire engines. The volunteers come in one end, and race to collect their clothing and leap on board. The Fire Service, community and other services have embraced the look, feel and function of the station, which has attracted new recruits, including women, who are now filling the ranks of the brigade.

Congratulations to Mason & Wales for their latest awardwinner; the Wanaka Fire Station. This is another example of Breen Construction partnering with professionals to create enduring infrastructure in our community. Since its incorporation in 1939, Breen Construction, a four-generation family business, has built everything from architecturally designed homes, to commercial buildings and farm, to the restoration of significant historic buildings. Make contact; Breen will add value to your project. breen.co.nz

Black House – Stacey’s own home – settles organically amongst silver birch and soldier-like poplars, reflecting the nearby landscape on Queenstown’s outskirts. It resembles black rock breaking away and sliding downhill. The central split between two forms, embellished with clematis on contrasting green-painted plywood, becomes a stairway to its modest entrance. The brief to chosen builders Barker Construction was to have Part One totally completed before moving in – attention to detail imperative to functionalising the small spaces. “I believe in building what we need, not what we want,” says Stacey, whose diverse architectural career has evolved over 22 years. With only 70sqm to also include a studio and office, its inbuilt shelving, storage and under-stair laundry ensures clear spaces. The kitchen becomes invisible once behind blackboard-painted sliding doors. Quirkily angled windows follow the Colorsteel cladding lines, reclining on a 10-percent cant into the hillside. The wet-back log burner, gas hob and wool insulation is insurance for inevitable power cuts. Using mainly raw, economical materials including float finished concrete floors, Stacey retained control of experimentation such as fibre-cement and iron-oxide for the bathroom walls. Part two, above the second form’s garage, is in the planning stage – but for now, Black House has everything a home needs. www.staceyfarrell.com

he family was keen to embrace passive house principles. “We wanted a healthy environment to raise our children in: warm in winter, cool in summer, with healthy air. We wanted to create spaces that support the way we want to live, while still being beautiful; rock-solid character with the latest technology.” Given that Team Green Architects’ vision is to “help people live better through excellence in architecture,” they were a good match. Described as “quite an artist” by a recent client, Mark Read – Director and Lead Architect for Team Green – is passionate about retaining the beauty of Queenstown’s incredible environment, by creating architectural solutions that reflect the local vernacular. “When a client begins a project with us, they become a key part of our team. We work to ensure their brief and dreams are fully understood and together we create something exceptional.” They have succeeded on Slope Hill Road, with an NZIA Award confirming it for sure. Guy Barker, Director of Barker Construction, the team which executed this build says, “The European windows were a challenge. Special attention was needed to ensure thorough air tightness – our team dedicated extra time and skill to make it so; the intello wrap took a bit longer on this build.” The attention to detail paid off. “We are proud of the whole thing; the client has a fantastic house.” With high levels of earthwool insulation, air-tightness, balanced heat exchange and ground source heat, the home is a benchmark all new homes should aspire to. Team Green is committed to demonstrating in every project that beauty, energy efficiency and cost effectiveness are not mutually exclusive.

Photographer: Samuel Hartnett

There is capital expenditure involved in building a passive house, but it adds value to your investment. Instead of continually budgeting for heating/ cooling expenses, the mortgage can be paid off.

“WE ARE PROUD OF THE WHOLE THING; THE CLIENT HAS A FANTASTIC HOUSE.” “In a traditional house, a substantial amount of heat is lost through the walls, floors and roof. In a passive house, the loss through the thermal envelope is minimal: less energy is needed to maintain temperature – much like a thermos flask,” explains Siân Taylor, a Certified Passive House Designer and Director at Team Green Architects.

The comfort expectations in a passive house are at least 20°C in winter and not exceeding 26°C in summer. “People often think energy efficiency involves solar panels on an inefficient building, or turning off all the heating and putting on another jersey. But it is really about getting better performance with less energy.” This is what Team Green Architects is aiming for: comfortable living with cheaper running costs. “Homes built to the building code’s minimum standard are costly to heat and overheat in summer,” Taylor adds. “This can lead to a situation of ‘fuel poverty’, where people can’t afford to keep a house warm, healthy and comfortable.” Taylor is driven to see building standards constantly improving in New Zealand through leadership and education on how to live better.

he Dacha, meaning ‘home away from home’ in Russian, has five bathrooms, three living areas, and floor-to-ceiling glazing – defining the entire front of the house. The 177 square-metre living area features a soaring 4.8-metre vaulted ceiling, clerestory windows and a schist-clad fireplace. Stacking sliding doors open up the entire living space to the view, and the property steps down the hillside to a swimming pool and extensive grassed areas. Described by the judges as, “a generous house designed to take full advantage of a breath-taking view”. “This house captures the magnificent landscape from every room and throughout the Architect has handled scale thoughtfully and with careful attention to details and materiality.” Constructed by Plimmer Building Ltd, the intricate project presented many challenges due to site conditions; and the result is a future-proofed, minimal maintenance home.
